Barack Obama In “Open Disagreement” With Military Commanders

ABC News correspondent Terry Moran interviewed Barack Obama who got a bit testy during the exchange.

“And then we sat down with [Barack Obama] to talk about what has become an open disagreement between military commanders here and Obama, over his plan to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq on a 16-month timetable.” — Terry Moran

Transcript . Barack Obama ABC Interview . July 21, 2008

ABC’s Terry Moran: “And then we sat down with [Barack Obama] to talk about what has become an open disagreement between military commanders here and Obama, over his plan to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq on a 16-month timetable. Did General Petraeus talk about military concerns about your timetable?”

Barack Obama: “You know, I would characterize the concerns differently. I don’t think that they’re deep concerns about the notion of a pullout per se. There are deep concerns about, from their perspective, a timetable that doesn’t take into account what they anticipate might be some sort of changing conditions. And this is what I mean when I say we play different roles. My job is to think about the national security interests as a whole, and to have to weigh and balance risks, in Afghanistan, in Iraq. Their job is just to get the job done here. And I completely understand that.”

Moran: “But the difference is real. Commanders here want withdrawals to be based on conditions on the ground. Obama emphasizes his timetable, but he insists he would remain flexible. I’m going to try to pin you down on this.” (continued below)

Obama: “Here let me say this, though, Terry, because, you know, what I will refuse to do, and I think that, you know ”

Moran: “How do you know what I’m going to ask?”

Obama: “Well, then if I don’t get it right, then you can ask it again.”

Moran: “All right.”

Obama: “Is to get boxed in into what I consider two false choices, which is either I have a rigid timeline of such and such a date, come hell or high water, we’ve gotten our combat troops out, and I am blind to anything that happens in the intervening six months or 16 months. Or, alternatively, I am completely deferring to whatever the commanders on the ground says, which is what George Bush says he’s doing, in which case I’m not doing my job as commander-in-chief.”

Another Obama mistake:

Obama probably relied on one of his college professor advisers who has never lived overseas for this stupid advice:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0708/11935.html

AMMAN, Jordan—An Obama campaign ban on green clothing during the candidate’s visits to Israel and Jordan has created wide puzzlement among observers of the Middle East.

In a memo to reporters, described as “a few guidelines we sent staff before departure to the Middle East,” Obama advance staffer Peter Newell laid out rules on attire for Jordan and Israel.

First among them: “Do not wear green.”

An Obama aide explained to reporters that green is the color associated with the militant Palestinian group Hamas. But while the color does appear on Hamas banners, there is no particular symbolism to wearing green clothes, experts said.

Moreover, green is more generally seen as a symbol of Islam.

“A ban on wearing green seems bizarre,” said Richard Bulliet, a professor of Middle Eastern history at Columbia University, who said the color is associated with the family of the Prophet Mohammed.

“I would hazard the guess that the campaign’s concern is more with distorted—and religiously inaccurate—reporting by Obama’s detractors than with any actual signal that might be conveyed,” he said, referring to false rumors that Obama is a Muslim. “You don’t want to have some blogger come along and say ‘Obama is showing his true color.’”

“I think they’re just being overcautious to a ridiculous degree,” Bulliet said.

Mohamad Bazzi, a professor of journalism at New York University and former Middle East bureau chief for Newsday, called the instruction “very strange.”

“I guess green is the ‘Hamas color’ — but it’s also the color of Islam!” Bazzi said in an email from Beirut. “That’s one way for the Obama campaign to alienate 1.4 billion Muslims worldwide.”

“We wanted to be as respectful as possible. We wanted to go to the highest level,” said Jen Psaki, an Obama spokeswoman in Amman, of the campaign’s full list of sartorial suggestions, which also include a ban on nail polish and tank tops for women.

Hmmm-already starting the dress code for women to appease his Muslim friends. Perfect.

so let me see if i got this straight.

he has over 300 foreign policy advisors telling him what to think and what to say.

and the best they can do is tell him and his cult NOT to wear any GREEN clothing for fear it may be misunderstood by some rascal of a blogger that might say “he’s showing his true colors”?

HELLO! WTF is that all about.

btw, green colors, at least in the good ole U.S.A. could be related to environmentalism.

good grief. this trip simply gets stranger by the minute.

Obama is running a new ad about how he reached across the aisle to Sen. Lugar(R) to push a bill through, Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Act 2007. Sen. Lugar made a statement about the ad to day:

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080716/NEWS0502/807160406

This is worth reading if you want another head scratcher. Sen. Lugar is a Republican from In., but some have suggested him as a running mate for Obama.

If you want to check out this bill Obama supposedly worked with him on you can go to senate.gov, go to Thomas and look for S.198.IS. I don’t see Obama’s name anywhere listed as sponsor, co-sponsor or arthur. I am just getting so frustrated. I know there is something wrong here and the last few days I have been feeling “the urgency of now”, if you know what I mean. Things are slipping away from the American people and there isn’t much time left to find out what it is.

I have a strong conviction we are no longer a two party system or, at least, we are close to that point. A one party system? Anyone? What is that called?

Comment by SueB. | 2008-07-21 21:55:12

I think that the “urgency of now” is an onset of “la tourista.” Get thee to a ‘facility.’

How about three party system? It looks like that to me anyway. The Dem. Party is split in the middle. It has a slight chance to become permanent.

This might be the link you are looking for.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:s.02566:

Couldn’t find anything about bo being involved in the Lugar-Nunn bill, but this one came later and was supposed to be along the same lines. Lugar is a nice guy with loads of experience. Personally, I think he was just showing the ropes to the new kid on the block, and bo’s thesis (which they don’t want to release) was on the Solviet Union, as I understand it, so this would have been of interest to him (theoretically). bo did apparently work with Lugar on S. 02566, but it is hard to tell just how much. The bill had 26 co-sponsors and bo was one of the 26.

You are right to check out the legislative claims, since many are totally false.

I just read that passage to my wife. She looked at me kind of funny and said: “It isn’t his f*(king job. I thought Bush was still president.” In any case, Obama is the most arrogant SOB ever. He has real mental issues. The democratic party has made the most egregious mistake ever. To let a SOB like Obama get this close to the presidency makes me believe that the whole party needs to be disbanded and a new one constructed from the ground up.

Comment by TeaMug | 2008-07-21 19:44:53

I think Obama needs a reminder that it is President Bush who is in the White House and is the commander-in-chief.

Jesus you people are silly. He was obviously speaking about — having been asked about — what he would do as president. Don’t be moronic.

I notice that nobody here is talking about the day’s real gaffe, which was McCain the Clueless talking about conditions on the “Iraq/Pakistan border,” which of course doesn’t exist. This follows his comments last week about Czechoslovakia, which doesn’t exist either, and hasn’t since the early Nineties. It is McCain who is a doddering fool who doesn’t know his ass from his elbow, and Obama who is quickly showing himself to be the usual quick study that he is and appearing very sure-footed on his foreign trip.

Comment by KG | 2008-07-21 20:07:10

You must be dumber than dirt to do that or senile. My 90 year old grandfather on occasion does that but corrects himself very quickly. The only reason he does that is because he can’t see very well. As for me, I used to be a public school teacher and can honestly say that I have NEVER called a kid the wrong name. And I suck at names. What you are saying is that if I called my wife Penny instead of Joann then it would be perfectly alright. You are a nitwit.

John McCain was speaking out of respect in acknowleging PEOPLE who (believe it or not) still exist regardless of THE CHANGE in the name of their homeland and country.

That would be something like the Name of the Country that appears on their Birth Cerificates. A land, a Nation that they are proud of being born in and unto. Not everbody else in the world was born on the alleged day Barry Dunham was born. The world did not begin with his nativity nor the day he abandoned the US Senate to blow his wad.

When the name of America is changed to something inspiring, will that be OK with you?

Believe it or not - now this is a shocker - there are still people living and breathing over the age of 39…46 …pick a number.

Some people can be hypnotized in two seconds and some people can’t. It was a message. Listen again.

BWT: Barry, your Grandmother plans on baking ya a birthday cake. Try to stop by. Bring the Folks!

obama is working toward the color BROWN — everyone can wear brown — natural brown — the politically correct color brown — we did not know WHICH shade of brown will be the Precious’ choice.

And of course the idiot obama is having disagreement with the military — he had absolutely no idea how the military operates or what it takes to move the military INTO a region or OUT of a region.

The planning and work involved in the deployment of a small squadron of airplanes is massive — multiply that times several thousand and that’s what it will take to get troops out.

Clinton said that she would consult with the military commanders on a safe exit or drawn down strategy. Obama is incapable of consulting or LISTENING. Apparently he wants the information to be distilled and then me make a royal command. Who the hell made him god?

When is this nightmare going to be over — I keep hoping that I will wake up.

Finally Obama has managed to insult the military too.
It is their duty to ‘get the job done here’, but he didn’t have to put it in such an insulting, dismissing manner.

If I wasn’t insulted by him many times over, I woud be now. I have a deep respect for our military and our generals. If they offer a different opinion on something, it sure as hell, they have a very good reason.

Good piece. When you don’t isolate a sentence or two and let the reader see a bit more context, it is clear what Obama means. And it is exactly right as far as I am concerned.

And the fact that he is willing to forcefully point out that under him we will have a civilian-led military (one of the principles that this country was founded on) is a good thing. Even though he will take heat on it from the right.

Comment by Gregoryp | 2008-07-21 19:46:39

What the hell are you babbling about? The president has always and will always be the commander in chief. Obama isn’t going to change one damned thing. He is even more incompetent than Bush. At least Bush’s down home ignorant country boy image that he cultivated is partially fake. Obama didn’t even bother to pretend to be anything more than an arrogant ass. Bush reigned his ego and BS in until after being elected. You know, Obama is probably on his best behavior as well. If that doesn’t scare the hell out of you then you have absolutely no fondness for American values.

Comment by Shainzona | 2008-07-21 19:59:45

BTW - isn’t “I set the goal, the service people get my job done” the same pompous and ruinous attitude that Bush has adopted and DK and Friends (if he has any left!) have been screaming about.

Obama doesn’t have the skill or experience to set policy - so whatever he says, our poor troops have to make happen.

Ye gods!!

The civilian control is designed to prevent a military coup.

It is not designed to override the judgment of ground commanders whose job is to fulfill their objectives and keep their troops alive.

Obama said he would rely on the the conditions on the ground and the opinion of commanders. I guess that no longer applies.

He’s done a 180 again.

There’s a surprise

Comment by Patti | 2008-07-21 19:57:39

What is that and why isn it being ignored?

What more do any of us need to know.

I’ll save my snide remarks for a troll.

This is the CRAZIEST (most subversive promise) BS so far and his message to the world with the new American symbol for Change is all the proof any true blue American needs to see. He is a war unto itself all by his lonesome.

He is a Danger. He is toxic. He is not a American.

Ted,
You sound like another clueless Obama supporter.

The Second Amendment to the Constitution allows for a civilians force for defense and securing of the laws, which has been interpreted to be the NATIONAL GUARD.

Unless you are interpreting it to be MILITIAS like many right wing conservatives do.

It’s interesting how WORMS always have to interpret what Obama means. Did Obama really go to law school?

Comment by Ted | 2008-07-21 21:53:56

All the other comments are not even worthy of a response, but I think you are trying to make a legitimate point, so I’ll respond.

My point is the military is to be headed up by a civilian - the president. Control of the military resides with the president.

A moron president, like the one we have now, will politicize the military to advance his agenda. A smart president will set strategy and rely on the military commanders to implement the tactics to achieve that strategy.

Obama’s stated strategy is to get the combat troops out of Iraq. Everybody is spinning around about the exact details of how/when this will happen - which of course is impossible t determine at this point. But our political situation is such that a candidate can not speak that obvious truth, because he/she will be sound bited and called hesitant or noncommittal or whatever.

Obama wants the troops out. Some of the military folks will disagree with him. That’s fine. As long as they do their jobs in good faith, it will all work out.

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-07-21 23:32:13

Oh fuck off. Like I want barky commanding the military. He’ll get more of them killed. He’s an idiot and everyone in the military knows it. I’m so friggin’ glad we’re out now. First Bush and now you want to push Obama on us. Fuck that noise.

Thank you–I was going to suggest that Ted pull that document out and have a gander at it.

He probably wiped his ass with his copy though, like his hero has apparently done.

Oh, well.

And BO called himself a Constitutional Scholar!!!

Then again, he “believes” we have fifty seven states and the Great Lakes are in Oregon. He “hopes” to do ten years as President. When the fur really starts flying, he’ll probably need a diaper “change.”

I think he should demand his money back from all those high-end schools he attended. That shit didn’t stick too well, apparently.

If bullshit were electricity, BO would be a powerhouse. But if knowledge is power, he’s sitting in the dark.

I wouldn’t depend on Obama’s judgement on any issue. He is so stupid, he sought out the help of Tony Rezko to help him buy his Mansion after reading about 100 articles in the Chicago papers about the FEDERAL INVESTIGATION of TONY REZKO for Political corruption. I would think a 12 yo street kid would know to stay away from Rezko. I’m just waiting for Rezko to turn RAT and take Barry and the Guv down.

If he has his way, we’ll have a CIVILIAN military over there AND here–a “national security force.”

Won’t that make those unvetted tobacco chewing nuts at Blackwater happy? And they don’t give a fuck about ROI, either.

Gotta keep those donors at General Dynamics happy. He’s into them for over a half a million, and that’s just the TOP dogs over there. It’s millions more if you go down the line to the company middle management and working stiffs, and add up all those “individual” (cough, choke) donations.

You Obamabots are nuts if you think he’s going to get us out of the region. He’s going to move the MILITARY to the Stan, and substitute Blackwater-type bastards–with their own “shoot ALL those muthafuckas and gun it” ideas about ROI– in Iraq. You watch.

He’ll then claim he kept his word, because he’ll have moved the military from the Iraqi frying pan to the Afghan line of fire…what he’ll have done is put more kids in harm’s way, only in a different location. Wheee!! Pity they won’t be able to use the Arabic commands they’ve learned in Baghdad for things like “Shut the fuck up! Hands up! On your knees or I’ll shoot, Pig!” over in Afghanistan, because, contrary to BO’s belief, it’s an INDO-EUROPEAN/SOUTHWEST ASIAN society, and they DON’T SPEAK ARABIC THERE.

That bastard knows full well that all his pals in the coal industry, and all his friends at Exelon in the Nuke Industry, can’t make up for the world shortfall in petroleum production. He’s GOT to keep those bastards pumping and keep all those key customers supplied and China happy.

That’s the shitty reality of this world, and while he’s playing you fools like a fiddle, he knows he’s got to keep China off our backs AND pay back his coal/nuke buddies…and his war production pals at GD.

General Dynamics doesn’t MAKE refrigerators, they’re in the shoot-em-up line. And he OWES them.

We’re staying in Iraq. It won’t be kids making twenty grand a year holding the line, though. It’ll be fat, mean hairy guys with cigars and bellies, and pisspoor attitudes, who’ve been through a war or three…and plenty of them won’t even be American. These soldiers of fortune will be paid a tidy fortune, too, and they’ll be about as accountable as BO seems to think he is…which is to say, not at all.

Comment by tzada | 2008-07-22 11:29:58

Someone needs to find out why BHO the military out of Iraq, and added to in Afganistan and Pakistan invaded or bombed? I think it has something to do with what his Arab handlers want? Or Brenenski scheme?

Comment by C.S. | 2008-07-21 22:42:50

IF you read the Constitution, then you misread the “civilian led military” part, because there isn’t one.
Congress is in charge of raising and supporting all armies. If you are thinking of Amendment 2, it refers to a citizen militia which should retain the right to bear arms to keep us secure from tyrants who might try to overthrow our elected government.

Obama is looking for some personal “security force” similar to those created by dictators it seems, which is against our Constitution and the principles of a democracy. So, unless you are telling us he plans to become a tyrant you will not be extolling the virtues of an illegal “security force.”

He is not finessing this Iraq thing well at all. His campaign is trying to play it like he made the right call and Maliki, McCain are now agreeing with him, but Obama’s campaign is being clumsy as hell.

Loose cannon. All over the place, this guy. And stubborn who thinks he knows more than he does.

Comment by sfhillary | 2008-07-21 20:01:06

Wrong. al-Maliki obviously made a conscious decision to support Obama and making it quite clear that the Iraqi government approves of his proposed 16-month timetable for withdrawal. It’s a huge embarrassment for McCain and a huge boost for Obama, as has been this whole trip. Look for McCain to do something aggressive to try and change the subject within 48 hours or so, because this is all playing really well for Obama. Only in NQ-land can any of this be spun to look bad for the guy.

Comment by KG | 2008-07-21 20:20:04

I don’t know about that. Pretty much everybody in my office today was making fun of Obama and his arrogance today…and a very diverse office at that. I asked the people around me if they could give me one word to describe why they dislike Obama so much. I heard the same word from about 12 people and that word starts with an “A” and it isn’t ass. Everyone’s vote was for the word ARROGANT!

They just can’t believe what a nose stuck up in the air, arrogant ass he is and most of those I work with are Democrats. Most of them said they are voting for McCain and two were write-in, and one said she was staying home and wasn’t voting at all.

I could not belive it, but I was going to big Kerry rallies, etc, and thought Oh, it doesn’t matter what is happening at the office. No one else democratic will vote for Bush, well…

How can a foreign government approve anything Obama proposes? He’s not the President yet. Or did that escape you? Under the US Constitution Obama has no authority to unilaterally conduct treaties or agreements with a foreign government or it’s agents.

So much for the advice and consent of the Congress and the Senate when it comes to treaties. Obama can just agree to them on his own.

The Constitution is now quaint. Who else had that view?

Oh yeah. It was George W. Bush.

CEO of the Democratic National Convention, Black Liberation Theologist
By Rizzuto

Mon Jul 21, 2008 - Is the Democratic Party suicidal? The head of the DNC’s religious outreach, Leah Daughtry who, in addition to believing that God finds abortion acceptable (something I find hard to swallow even as an agnostic), is a believer in the same Marxist “Black Liberation Theology” preached by Reverend Wright. This from a glowing puff piece about Ms. Daughtry from the New York Times:

Behind her as she preached, a simple wooden cross hung on a brick wall in the vaulted and sizable sanctuary of the church, which is headed by her father, Herbert Daughtry. A prison convert who served time in his early 20s for armed robbery and passing bad checks, Herbert Daughtry — whose father founded the church and whose grandfather and great-grandfather were also ministers — became the church’s pastor 50 years ago, and today Leah was delivering the sermon as part of an anniversary celebration. Below the sanctuary, in the fellowship hall, a banner for slavery reparations proclaimed, “They Owe Us.” Fliers recounted Herbert Daughtry’s arrest, a few weeks earlier, as he led marchers protesting the not-guilty verdict in the police killing of Sean Bell, an unarmed black man. His ministry has always combined consuming spirituality with black liberation theology — the theology Jeremiah Wright invoked this spring to defend his controversial sermons — and zealous political activism. Leah holds these forces within her.

But wait there’s more! This New York-born Pentecostal minister is not only the head of their religious outreach, she’s the CEO of the Democratic National Convention! That’s right, the CEO of the DNC is a MARXIST! Folks…do we really need any more proof?

Pentecostal minister — Oh my god!

The Pentecostal church — Joey’s army — these jerks have their own agenda and it isn’t main stream America or PRO American.

This explains a lot.

Back when I was reading diaries on Daily Kos there was a series about steeple jacking — the take over of churches by the Pentecostal nutwing branch of that church. These folks are a cult — we have a few of the Pentecostal cults in rural Washington.

If you google Joel’s Army you’ll find the diaries by a “walk away” from the Pentecostal evangelical nuts.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff resigned today in protest over President Obama’s move to unconditionally withdraw all US Forces from the Middle East. None of members of the JCS made any comments to reporters as they walked out of the White House following a contentious meeting with the President. The Senate Armed Services Committee chaired by Senator Hillary Clinton immediately vowed to hold hearings on the validity of he Obama administrations arguments that doing so would not jeopardize American interests in the region.

Green in Islam: My understanding is that this colour is not just ‘associated with’ Islam but is a special and sacred colour not to be treated lightly or trivially. So I would expect that the ‘do not wear green’ direction is intended to make sure that anyone travelling with Obama on this junket is seen as showing respect for Islam.

I find this level of sensitivity to Islam to be utterly amazing, when compared with Obama’s evident crass and downright nasty insensitivities toward women, working class people, and all those he has described as ‘bitter.’ Similar consideration and awareness of the needs of others would have gone a long way on the campaign trail on this side of the pond!

Comment by DoroB | 2008-07-21 20:03:13

His campaign didn’t seem to bother with respecting the Muslim women who wanted to sit behind the podium.

Comment by sfhillary | 2008-07-21 20:10:06

I see. So, Obama’s sensitivity toward Islamic sensibilities while his staff is in the Middle East is seen here as a problem? Amazing. Truly amazing.

As for the problem with women: the last polls I’ve seen give Obama a comfortable lead over McCain with women nationwide, so thankfully, most people don’t share your assessment of his campaign in that regard either.

Comment by DoroB | 2008-07-21 20:16:55

Wrong. Respect for Islam in general is not seen as a problem. Obama and his supporters’ disrespect for women in general is.

Poll numbers also can’t hide Obama’s sexist attitudes, so what you’re saying is it doesn’t matter how he treats women as long as he stil gets the votes. That explains why you’re supporting him while calling yourself a Democrat. How pathetic.

By the way, if you happen to write for The New Yorker, let your boss know we had fun laughing at the cover.

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2008-07-21 21:13:51

“Islamic sensibilities” in this case means, “We shoot women who aren’t covered up”.

Just so you know.

And hey, no problem, if you think everybody’s in love with Obama, I’m happy. It will make your disappointment all the more fun to watch.

Look smart one. According to polls, depending on which poll YOU love, between ten and twenty four percent of hillary supporters absolutely refuse to vote for Barack Obama. This does not include “undecideds”. Now that means somewhere between 1,800,000 and 4,320,000. If this doesn’t bother you, knock yourself out.

Comment by flyingsongster | 2008-07-21 21:24:30

You understand WRONG. People in the ME wear green all the time. And it isn’t always HAMAS green, either. It’s a color, and it’s a popular color, too, because it evokes the idea of oasis, relaxation, rest, coolness. It also looks good on some people.

You can even buy GREEN SLIPPERS, and you should know that the FOOT is considered the most disrespectful part of the body…show someone the sole of your foot, and you’ve told them to fuck off.

Don’t believe me? Look here. No “sacredness” to the color at all. Put ‘green’ in the search feature, and a pile of Islamic men’s and women’s clothing and accessories comes up in that “haram” (forbidden–to you) color.

The “prohibitions on green” are in your and your Savior’s heads. He was probably scared shitless some idiot would buy a Hamas teeshirt in the baazaar. Hell, they’ll probably come home with ones that they think say Baghdad, Iraq but actually say Death to Amrika!

They are not smears, real meetings with American and Middleeast Islamic relgious leaders, as soon as we send an email to the camp showing them their meetings have been founded, the camp immediately got him to go to Christian and Jewish Churches for a “photo shot”. Just like he is doing today in Germany. A photo shot for everybody to see the New Future President. The man cannot be trusted.

It just doesn’t make any sense that he is such a wacko and everyone in the party and the media loves him for real!!!!!!!

I pray that he about shit his pants that he is actually the presumed nominee. I think he doesn’t like getting picked on now and that he is so tired. I pray that he wants out and Hil wants in and the dems agree!

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0807/21/lkl.01.html

“BECK: Welcome back to LARRY KING LIVE.

My name is Glenn Beck, filling in for Mr. King tonight.

I’ll have you know, I’m an opinion guy. I’ll try to keep it as — I’ll try to keep the pie hole shut as much as possible. And it isn’t easy for me.

I want to bring you back to our guests.

We have Peter Beinart from the Council On Foreign Relations, a senior fellow there, best-selling author of “The Good Fight: Why Liberals and Only Liberals Can Win the War on Terror.”

David Frum, former speechwriter for President George W. Bush.

And David Gergen is here, CNN senior political analyst.

Let me pick it up with you, David Frum.

There was an op-ed piece in “The Washington Times” from Lanny Davis who I, I’ve got to tell you, back in the ’90s, I didn’t like Lanny Davis because I thought he was, you know, the typical, you know, just say whatever you have to for your guy.

I now listen to Lanny Davis with a new ear because while I still disagree with him, he is willing to say my side is right on this one my side is wrong.

I don’t know if you saw the op-ed piece, but he said he was wrong about the surge — “We were wrong. These are facts and not arguments,” to question quote from his article.

When will we find more politicians like Lanny Davis — I can’t believe I’m saying that — that will say hey, that’s just the way it is?

FRUM: About 1:00 after inauguration day in 2009.

(LAUGHTER)

FRUM: And at the speed at which Barack Obama is rediscovering — you know, it wasn’t that long ago when the core supporters of Barack Obama were traducing (ph) General Petraeus — accusing him of treason, in effect, with big newspaper ads. And today there’s a picture of General Petraeus, probably the most successful American soldier in the past decade, with Barack Obama.

And I think you’re going to see Barack Obama trying to pierce through this problem he has that Lanny Davis and other Hillary Clinton supporters pointed out…

BECK: OK…

FRUM: …of the question of whether he can be commander-in-chief or not.

BECK: Well, let me — Peter, let me go to you. I’ll give you the opportunity to answer the question that I don’t think David just did.

When are we going to find a politician — because the same thing could be said about John McCain on taxes and the Bush tax cuts. Now he’s flipped and everything else.

When are we just going to find somebody who is that different politician?

BEINART: I think it would be great if politicians kind of said very forthrightly when they were wrong. They generally don’t because the press kills them when they do.

I mean John Edwards…

BECK: But who cares about — honestly, who cares about the press?

The American people are screaming out for change. And they’re not getting it from either candidate.”

Comment by Peggy Sue | 2008-07-21 20:18:51

What did he just say? There’s answering a question, and then there’s covering your ass. Apparently, Obama thinks he can do both in all cases and be applauded for the effort.

Don’t think so.

Shocking News For Obama
Detroit News Poll: Michigan Will Be Close
A new Detroit News poll shows a tight race in Michigan with Sen. Barack Obama edging Sen. John McCain, 43% to 41% with 12% undecided. Another 5% support either Bob Barr or Ralph Nader.

The survey’s 4 point margin of error makes the race a statistical tie.

No Bull, OMG: Terrorist Organization To Provide Security To Obama In Palestine!!!
According to new sources, Barack Obama will be meeting with Palestinian officials in Ramallah during his current Middle East Tour. After visiting with Israeli officials, Obama will be escorted by Israeli defense forces until security is handed over to the Palestinians outside of Ramallah. The Palestinian government has charged the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades with providing security for Obama.

The Al Aqsa Martyr Brigades are a recognized TERRORIST ORGANIZATION! The organization is and has long been listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, Canada, The European Union, Japan and Israel. The Al Aqsa Martyr Brigades have taken credit for dozens of Homicide bombings within Israel, kidnappings, and rocket firings that have reigned upon Israeli towns and settlements.

Is this the foreign policy message that Obama wants to send?

What presidential candidate in their right mind would possibly agree to accept protection from a recognized and globally condemned TERRORIST ORGANIZATION?

Uppity,
This is what Gergen was talking about:

Third, Iraqis want an aspirational timeline, with a clear date, for the redeployment of American combat forces. Prime Minister Maliki told us that while the Iraqi people deeply appreciate the sacrifices of American soldiers, they do not want an open-ended presence of U.S. combat forces. The Prime Minister said that now is an appropriate time to start to plan for the reorganization of our troops in Iraq — including their numbers and missions. He stated his hope that U.S. combat forces could be out of Iraq in 2010.

Gergen says not cool to release the private conversation while the real POTUS is in talks
with Maliki and in Iraq to boot.

That’s next- only certain people will be forced to listen to the orchestra 24/7 and only certain people will be allowed to get down on rap.

WTF is Bob Dylan? It’s all too outrageous to believe. agahahaag ahghu. Canada is going to swell by a good 100 mil. next summer. Refugees? Tom Petty is alright. I guess.

I will never feel the same about expressing a belief, like “believe”. The word has lost all of its veracity and deep feeling for me.

Conspiracy????

The people wanted Hillary - they got Obamass.

The polls show people definitely want McCain - will we get Obamass?

He knew Hillary didn’t have a chance the fix was in with the DNC. Does this guy know the big fix is in for the general - the way he describes himself as the Commander and Chief and there has been no election? He constantly refers to after January, 2009 - I will . . . .

This is scary stuff!!!!!!!

This could be a huge gaffe if the press picks up on it. Highly unlikely.

Doesn’t obama know there is only one president at a time in the WH. How dare he negotiate with foreign leaders and then issue statements about the discussion.

Comment by Barty | 2008-07-21 21:49:25

He is doing a lot better than our current leader, so why not?

Comment by Gail in SC | 2008-07-21 22:23:00

He himself said in the interview with Terry Moran that he made clear that he was there as a Sen. and that we have one president at a time to PM Maliki. The transcript of the interview is very clear. He feels no need to hide anything about conversations or anything else that is already common knowledge insofar as what PM Maliki thinks about the situation in Iraq. He did not make a mistake at all. Unlike John McCain, who thinks that there is a border between Iraq and Pakistan. And you McCain supporters try to lecture Sen Obama about him and inexperience. Give me a break.

Comment by tzada | 2008-07-22 13:16:48

No we try and lecture you PPP about what a liar, cheat and fraud and idiot we think Obama is.

The “new” 16 month withdrawal proposal is “riffed” directly from Hillary. Let’s not forget that was / is her plan. Barack Hussein Obama’s plan was originally immediate withdrawal. Check out the debate videos.

This guy is an incompetenet and a liar.

Embarassing he has to visit foreign countries to get “national security” quals. It’s laughable to the extreme but the media and laft hate radio is eating it up. So pitiful.

Once again I have to feel shame for my country. Who would have ever thoguht Bush would seem better than BO. And since he loves Bush so much and hates the Clinton’s and Bill Clinton’s administration, I’m sure he agrees with this latest right-wing assault on birth control!

The fool should be here in the good ole’ US of A tsking on McCain. I mean really, how stupid we must seem to other countries. This is analgalous to Russia or some other country’s candidate coming over here to have speaks with Bush and our military. How pathetic!

Comment by interested party | 2008-07-21 22:00:01

The question was:

Did General Petraeus talk about military concerns about your timetable?

A simple no or yes would have done to start.

Whether he feels trapped by the question is fine and wonderful, but the question I have is the same: did he talk to Petraeaus about his timetable?

By the way, why does Obama keeping looking down to the right. Seems like he’s trying to remember his lines?

Comment by Northwest rain | 2008-07-22 01:35:40

Oh hell — Axlerod stole my idea — Obama has a teleprompter implanted near his eyeball — that way he’s looking down and to the right!!

Someone should check the archives and enumerate how often BO has said, “The notion that…..”. God, I’ve come to despise the word “notion”. Did he spend his youth in a Five & Dime store?

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-07-21 22:28:47

It’s a word older people use. He probably is repeating the phrase because he heard it from older folks, you know, like that poor “racist” granny he threw under the bus.

She probably has a notion that all that sacrificing she did to send his ass to that jazzy school, only to be called a racist on national tv, was more painful than a snakebite to the bosom.

Off Topic But its about Hillary Clinton.

Larry King had Glen Beck on tonite, and the first half hour was putting Obama thru the mill and actually praising Clinton, and Lani Davis.Glen Beck called Obama the farthest Left Wing, and asked why people are not running away.

He thought a third party was in order.. lol

Good first half hour

Comment by Danny | 2008-07-21 22:26:31

Obama thinks he’s commander in chief! That’s laughable could you imagine McCain telling us “in which case I’m not doing my job as commander in cheif”

He need’s to get his mind out of the fantasy he and Michele play in the bedroom when he’s doing these interviews.

I know ewwwwwwwwwwwww.

Comment by Chicago Joe | 2008-07-22 00:13:39

That is unbelievable. I hope the MSM latches onto that (sigh).

Comment by Johnny at Work | 2008-07-21 22:58:35

Obama claims that if he defers to the Generals on the Ground he is not doing his job as commander in Chief. He makes one visit to Iraq and Afghanistan and he is a military expert?

It reminds me of a quote by General Norman Schwarzkopf about the other “Hussein” following the first Iraq War.

“As far as Hussein being a great military strategist, he is neither a strategist, nor is he schooled in the operational arts, nor is he a tactician, nor is he a general, nor is he a soldier. Other than that he’s a great military man I want you to know that.”

This describes Barack Hussein perfectly.

Wonder what Wes Clark is thinking??? I remember him repeating over and over how difficult a withdrawsal could be, how dangerous…and here BOBO is fudging around with no conception of what he is talking about…trying to show “gravitas”

I could scream…

It’s amazing that Obama can’t give credit where credit is due. Our soldiers and the surge strategy worked. All other positive developments — the Sunnis turning on Al Queda, for example — flowed from the surge’s success on the ground. Figuratively speaking, Obama just spit on every soldier who has served in Iraq. How dare him!

Comment by Sugar | 2008-07-21 23:30:49

“Obama: “Here let me say this, though, Terry, because, you know, what I will refuse to do, and I think that, you know “

Moran: “How do you know what I’m going to ask?”

Obama: “Well, then if I don’t get it right, then you can ask it again.”

Moran: “All right.””

Testy indeed! More of that temper! Add this one to the Obama Temper Watch. He’s a ticking time-bomb waiting to explode. I’m telling you! I’m hoping that he kirks out at one of the “debates” so that we can see that John McCain is Papa Smurf compared to this arrogant S.O.B.

There was ethnic cleansing in Baghdad that actually took the violence level down,” he said.

What the hell does this mean? So, they ran out of people to kill - that brought the violence down?

He needs to fire those 300+ foreign policy advisors.

Obama , has no business in setting time tables with the Iraq president , He will someone remind him hes a candidate and not the President who can in an open discussion set guidelines for withdraw with a President of another country. He showed his lack of experience you do not disclose private discussions when u are not the President. How do we know he did, because Malikie came up with the same year to withdraw troops , in doing so he open the doors to alqueda to hammer the troops in Afghanistan when they know we are coming.. He is a disaster waiting to happen, he should be muzzled in a fact finding way, dont discuss plans find out what is working and what has failed. an open ear not how we can work together to get what we want when im president. Admit he is wrong when we know the surge worked..

I’ve just never heard of calling your own kids by the wrong name. Never

You’re joking, right? EVERY single person I know, including me, knows this one. You know, your mom runs through the list of all the kids’ names before getting to yours? Even while she’s sitting right there looking at you? Come on, I don’t know a single person with more than one sibling who didn’t experience this. Comedians do routines based on this standard Momism. It’s completely normal.

Not that I say this to excuse BO. He long ran out of free passes, loooong ago.

I’m laughing about the Mom-ism thing. It’s true. There were 4 kids in my family, and my mom would go down the list of all of them when she was mad and trying to rein in the chaos, or get our attention. It usually was the first syllable all the way down the list until she got the name right. Funny, I do the same thing with my dogs…

Comment by Idiocracy08 | 2008-07-22 10:08:43

Never does she look right at my face and call me my sister’s name.

I want to PUKE. Obama is not the commander-in-chief.
He sits there talking like the election is over.
Without Obama’s 300 advisers, he wouldn’t know what to say. He has NO EXPERIENCE.
By the way, Obama’s time-tables with Al-Maliki will be a ” I told you so” platform he’ll come back from Europe saying.
Excuse me, I’ve got to find the bathroom now.

This is a perfect example of how Obama confuses and obsures his answer by engaging in a stream of consciousness drivel. Perhaps instead of criticizing Americans for not knowing other languages, he might want to learn English. Or at least employ an interpreter so the American people know what he is saying.

Ok Obama would not allow reporters in.Obama is a double talker. He tells one to people and says another to the military.I wonder how much people watch of his flip flops.

Oh I got an email in trying to get women to help the democrates.asking for money I send a reply back and said if this is for Hillary yes.Any other democrat No!

I just thought It could be someone wanting money or trying to take Hillary’s supporters away to try and stop her in roll call~Denver.

I will not ever vote Obama. And I will stick by Hillary for roll call!Denver but if the outcome is like May 31,2008 convertion,I’m out of here.John McCain will get my vote.I don’t care of the medias tricks anymore,I just don’t watch the media any of them.

The think I know is thatHillary knows her supporters will be there for he Denver~And I am staying with Hillary and only to see the outcome.Like I said.,.If it’s another mAY 31,2008 convention~I am out of here.I will not stay in a party who kicked~stab~ounch~spit on her~bit at her!Obama did that as well.I will never trust Obama after all his flip flops~His lies!his bad judgements and still running more Judgements.Never.
