Ominous Signs For Obama

Today’s Rasmussen Reports analysis finds:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows Barack Obama attracting 42% of the vote while John McCain earns 41%. That’s the lowest level of support measured for Obama since he clinched the Democratic Presidential nomination on June 3. Obama’s support peaked at 48% with data released on June 8, 9, and 10. During that same time frame, McCain’s support has remained steady in the 40% to 42% range (he’s had just one day a point below that range and two days a point above it).

When "leaners" are included, it’s Obama 46% and McCain 45%. With leaners, Obama reached 50% support in mid-June and was at 48% or 49% every day from June 13 until July 10. Since then, he has reached the 48% level just once while polling consistently at 46% or 47% (see recent daily results). Tracking Polls are released at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time each day.

McCain is viewed favorably by 57% of voters, Obama by 53%. McCain is currently supported by 86% of Republicans and holds a modest–four percentage point—lead among unaffiliated voters. Obama earns the vote from 77% of Democrats (see other recent demographic highlights).

There are also ominous signs in polling on foreign policy credentials:

Obama is currently on a European tour designed to bolster his foreign policy credentials here at home. Currently, voters trust McCain more than Obama on both national security issues in general (53% – 39%) and on Iraq in particular (49% – 37%).

You’ll recall our July 15th story, “Rasmussen Reports: Hillary Fares Better Against McCain”:

From the Rasmussen Reports analysis page:

McCain fares better against Obama than he does against two other prominent Democrats. New York Senator Hillary Clinton leads McCain by eight points, 50% to 42%. Former Vice President Al Gore, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2000, leads McCain 50% to 43%.

Thank god there is still time for superdelegates to nominate Hillary Clinton.

You can get a handy list of the superdelegates to contact in Imv’s story, “ACTION! Contact These Superdelegates.”

Very ominous indeed, especially for the height of summer, when Dems typically dominate in the POTUS polls…

What a loser.

Hillary is the only viable Dem this year.

Comment by Dawnelle | 2008-07-21 12:35:18

I still think that poll didn’t take in to account all the NEWLY unaffiliated that changed SOLELY to NOT vote for the liar Obama and will mostly vote to keep him from winning if that means in some states pulling the lever for McCain? SO BE IT!

This would be ME – I’m one of the newly unaffiliated. So, when they count their democratic party numbers, how old are their numbers? From 2004? 2006?

There are lots of us.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-07-21 16:47:26

I am still a registered Democrat. I’m not changing my affiliation…at least not yet.

I’m not voting for Obama, either.

Comment by JM | 2008-07-21 22:16:08

Same with me. I am waiting for the dog and pony show in Denver. Once I see how things play out at the convention, I will make my decision. Actually, I think I have made my decision already. I will leave the Democratic Party this year, either immediately after the convention, or after the general election since I don’t want to jeopardize voting against Obama in November.

If Hillary somehow gains the nomination, then it’s off to the races. Hillary all the way!

The fact that the poll shows that the public thinks the media is promoting Obama could really backfire on him. Thank God people are finally waking up. I hope they are also starting to realize that they sold Bush in 2000.

Depressing to see NM …with all the military personnel here…

Missouri was trending McCain a few weeks ago…I wrote about it July 2…

http://insightanalytical.wordpress.com/2008/07/02/missouri-and-mccain/

The state polls, of course, are the ones to watch.

However, all polling has its biases, deliberate or not and you aren’t always comparing apples to apples. Polls interview differently…do they poll “likely voters” (and what are they?); registered voters (a much broader group); “leaners” (who are leaners?)

Survey USA does state polling–and they “weight” their polls AND their site states that they are owned by “news journalists.” Who owns Survey USA?

Are the numbers from Survey USA only or from different sources?

Comment by Ted | 2008-07-21 14:47:00

They are pollster numbers, which are a time-weighted average of all relevant polls.

I completely agree that polls are biased, or at least inaccurate; especially the low sample rate ones used at this point in the election. And state polls are not doe all that frequently, so they do not reflect up-to-date trends. However, they are all we have in terms of data, and they go a long way to refute the main argument expressed on this site that Obama can’t win in November. By all data we have, he is very close or ahead. Given that, there is absolutely no way the SDs at the convention will vote against the majority of the pledged delegates and award the nomination to Clinton. If Obama was 20 points back, maybe. But no way it will happen the way things are.

Given that, the people on this site should be more upfront about what they want. They want McCain to be the next president. Which is fine. Lot’s of people feel that way. But as they say here, “own your candidate” and maybe put a bit of effort into trying to build McCain up instead of being exclusively negative. The 100% negative approach is so unhealthy in the long run.

Comment by derridog | 2008-07-21 17:48:01

Thanks for your concern, Ted. It’s just too bad that Obama threw universal health care under the bus. It would be so much easier to treat our negativity if he hadn’t done that.

Rasmussen is the only poll showing Obama up by 11 pts in NH. Every other poll places him around 3 pts.

Strategic and Rasmussen have McCain ahead in FL by 8 pts. McCain is averaged ahead on RCP by 2 pts.

Obama’s lead in IN has slipped a half pt. making him and McCain virtually tied.

Ditto VA, though Rasmussen puts McCain ahead 1 pt.

Rasmussen, puts McCain ahead 5 pts. in MO. SUSA has him at 7 pts. and PPP(D) says 3pts.

In NV, Obama’s lead slipped to 2pts.

SUSA has Obama ahead by 3pts. in NM and Rasmussen says 8 pts.

McCain has a 1 pt. lead in OH according to Rasmussen, while most other polls place Obama at a 2 pt. lead.

None of these polls show anything but a dead heat, so I don’t know why you’re posting whatever cooked up polls you’ve got or crowing about his lackluster performance.

I’d be so delighted if the Democratic Party had the courage to rethink their folly in annointing BO, but I’m not very hopeful.

I think the arrogance of BO is what will sink him. He’s overseas acting as though he already won the election. It sounds like he is talking (instead of listening). In essence, it appears he is campaigning overseas. His campaign has banned signs and banners at his “big speech” in Germany. He has that crass new campaign jet. He issued a dress code to his press entourage (mostly aimed at the females) for the Middle Eastern leg of the trip. (I know you need help dressing appropriately, sweeties).

Why do you think MO didn’t come with him? They didn’t want any pix of her with a scarf on her head and then she couldn’t wear her oversized beads and sleeveless sun dresses.

Comment by Indy | 2008-07-21 12:52:07

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see less of her, even after he returns. She may now be classified as a “distraction” to his “tightly wrapped message”. What do you think?

Comment by kellie | 2008-07-21 13:11:55

Yeah it can’t possibly be because they have two young children at home and it probably wouldn’t be the best idea to send both parents into a war zone. Just a thought.

Comment by Indy | 2008-07-21 13:24:28

I actually did not expect her to go overseas with him, the Middle East leg is a part of his official duties as a senator. As for the European leg, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be natural to have her and the girls there.

I am commenting on what her role will be when he returns. She may be keeping a low profile now as to not distract from his big World Tour.

Comment by Donna Brazile | 2008-07-21 14:22:27

Her poll numbers are tanking thus the new makeover, the new chief of staff, and the new speech writer.

She has been put on the shelf as they say until after the election.

Michelle Obama is employed outside the home at the University of Chicago hospital. She is currently on leave of absence. Since Obama has been so great in getting money earmarked for Michelle’s employer they apparently don’t mind if she isn’t at work.

So the fact that Michelle has two young children has not stopped her from being away from home before. And her mother takes care of the kids, or so she says. You are just trying to make excuses for her. She is NOT a campaign asset for Obama.

indy — I think some Democrats are doing their best to sink Obama. How are all these negative stories about Obama coming out if someone wasn’t feeding them to the media? I think the polls are way worse than what Rasmussen suggests because they don’t include the millions of Hillary Supporters voting for McCain. There could be upwords of 10 Million Democratic voters who will not vote for Obama. Not all are members of PUMA some are just Democrats who favor McCain in these troubled times.

Also, I don’t know if you read it but Obama is not helping Down Ticket Democrats. He doesn’t support them as most Presidential Nominees do. You always see a Presidential candidate standing with various state office holders when he makes a speech — not Obama. He blows into a town to collect his money and make a speech and then he’s off.

He has also shown his arrogance by dictating to the Party and by not returning phone calls from Dean and Pelosi and other top Democrats. Many in the Party find him an insufferable bore who is impossible to work with.

Good day, s. hall!

I don’t think the polling data reflects an accurate picture either, I think McCains numbers are probably better (and BOs worse).

The thing is, no matter how poorly he is treating down-ticket dems, local dem offices, and the people who declared his victory on the final day of the primaries-what is their out? What courage, honesty or conviction have they displayed? I just don’t think they have the courage to reverse course…they’ve already gone ahead with the Mile High stadium plans for the speech of speeches.

The negative stories may be a way to poke him in the side, but I’ll be absolutely astounded if they put Hillary into nomination and/or allow her to accept the nomination.

I’d be happy and relieved if Hillary was on the November ballot-I just don’t see it happening. :(

BO is like the door to door salesman that shows up with a freezer full of pre-wrapped beef. All for the low low price of;

Nein, nein, nein, Gott verdammt Amerika!!!

What I find amazing is BO saying Afghanistan is “precarious”.

1) NO shit! But he did not need to make it a political football Lives are at stake.

2) Telling the world Iraq is a distraction and Afganistan is in trouble maybe valid, but the fact that is disturbing is the aid and comfort he is providing in terms of propaganda for the “enemy” , just proves once again that BO is incapable of displaying any judgement skills.

He is there to listen and learn. It does not require immediatte comment.
If anything, I would think BO might say, ” I will reflect on what I am being told and be open and honest in responding to the facts as they are.

In both countries, the US has bugged out in the past, leaving many people to suffer in the wake of proxy wars. They would right to not be so trusting of the level of sustained US commitment when looking at BO. He has flip flopped on some very key issues.

If you where reading reports of this as an Iraqi or Afgani, I would conclude that the writing is on the wall. Time to make other plans.

Funny, BO did not once mention, that I have heard reported, the Opium production in Afganistan, which is a major problem for funding arms sales.

I wonder how much of Auchi’s profits are paid in blood. I wonder how much of an interest he has in BO’s land trust.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-21 15:24:45

I wonder how much of Auchi’s profits are paid in blood. I wonder how much of an interest he has in BO’s land trust.

The biggest obstacle to declaring victory in Iraq is that country’s government corruption. As long as they’re skimming profits off blackmarket oil and stuffing their pockets (like Auchi did), they will continue allowing us to police their country and pay to rebuild it. Do you think given Obama’s association with the Crown family, GE and Auchi, he’s got to shut down the feeding trough? Nothing in his past suggests he would.

Obama Adviser Cass Sunstein Rejects Prosecution of “Non-Egregious” Bush Crimes

With many Democrats still fuming over the refusal of Democratic leaders like Speaker Nancy Pelosi to allow even impeachment hearings into detailed allegations of crimes by President Bush in office, close Obama adviser (and University of Chicago Law Professor) Cass Sunstein recently rejected the notion of prosecuting Bush officials for crimes such as torture and unlawful surveillance. After Sen. Obama’s unpopular vote on the FISA bill, it has triggered a blogger backlash — raising questions about the commitment of the Democrats to do anything other than taking office and reaping the benefits of power.

Comment by Indy | 2008-07-21 12:37:18

As soon as the Dems failed to even attempt to rein in the Bush administration, I knew they simply were looking forward to all that power when they regained the White House. BO probably dreams about it (and expanding it to new levels).

They were victorious in 2006 because citizens wanted to restore checks and balances to the government. They failed us.

Comment by FloridaDem | 2008-07-21 13:11:54

He would disenfrancise any voters of any state that didn’t agree with him withhold funding, He would use his civilian army (Nation Of Islman and Fruits Of Islman) to stop any dissent against him. Obama Odinga would be bad for America

Per Politico:

Obama’s Berlin speech, the German tabloid Bild reports, seems to be coming with all the message-control trappings of his American ones.

Fliers touting the speech reportedly bar signs and posters, as well as bags.

Wouldn’t it be great if he gave a speech / event in Germany and no one came? See, if he were already president, he’d have brought in the troops from nearby bases to ‘people’ the crowd.

They’re doing the same thing Bush has done – it’s all planned, choreographed spectacle.

Disgusting.

Since that is obviously the case, what we need is a photo of BO under his Siegesaule erection with a “Mission Accomplished” sign added (or maybe Fission, since he is managing to split the Dem party rather than doing any uniting?)

Black hole is now officially a racist term.

Obama Odinga? They’re cousins. Obama spoke with him during the NH primaries, recommended toe-sucking Dickie Morris as an advisor who then suggested a million-Kenyan march ala the Million man March which resulted in the slaughter of 1000 Christians as no one realized there would be no police protection for the protestors.

Obama is evidently not the slightest bit repulsed by his cousin’s plan to reinstate Sharia Law and force all women into Burkhas.

Yeah, S. Hall, just think what we can look forward to: 4 to 8 years of discussing who or what is racist… instead of focusing on our myriad problems.

I’ve got no problem with discussions of race and racial equality, etc. from time to time, but Obama has used racism as a weapon against anyone who says a word against him.

What his campaign did to Bill & Hillary Clinton, finding racism in every word they uttered, is beyond disgusting. And, of course, they were aided and abetted by a more-than-willing media.

There is just no way I would ever vote for this pretender… and I’ve been a Democrat for 50 years!

Comment by pasmalltowngirl | 2008-07-21 13:04:17

Here is a scary thought. Obama, even if he doesn’t win enough electoral votes, can be “choosen” by the electors as our president. Just like what the DNC did.
Read about the Electoral College.

After Election Day, on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December, these electors assemble in their state capitals, cast their ballots, and officially select the next President of the United States. Legally, the electors may vote for someone other than the candidate for whom they were pledged to vote. This phenomenon is known as the “unfaithful” or “faithless” elector.
Here are 2 sites to read about it
http://bensguide.gpo.gov/6-8/election/electoral.html
http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/laws.html

Comment by jus messin wit you man | 2008-07-21 13:21:25

So maybe we should start NOW to contact the Electoral College electors to make sure they don’t pick the affirmative action candidate for president.

When McCain wins by a landslide, the EC wouldn’t have the balls to overturn a landslide, would they?

After GWB was elected TWICE, I’m convinced that anything is entirely possible. We can’t let that happen again.

Obama = Bush’s 3rd term.

1. Hillary
2. McCain

NOBAMA. No way.

Comment by jus messin wit you man | 2008-07-21 13:26:51

Duh, never mind. I went to the EC website and learned that the EC representatives are chosen on election day. Only a few states require them to vote for the candidate chosen by their state.

http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761571294/president_of_the_united_states.html

III Election to the Presidency

Print this section
The power of the presidency makes it the most sought-after position in American politics. The keen competition for the post and high cost of waging an effective campaign limits the pool of candidates to a select few. The Constitution originally provided for the election of the president and vice president by the electoral college. Members of the electoral college, who are called electors, represent their states by casting votes for two candidates, with the person receiving the greatest number of votes becoming president and the second-place finisher, vice president. A tie vote in the 1800 election between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr led to the enactment in 1804 of the 12th Amendment to the Constitution, which provides that the electoral college use separate ballots, one for president and one for vice president.

By the mid-19th century the votes of the electoral college had only symbolic importance. Electors from each state simply followed the will of the voting majority by giving their votes to the candidate receiving the most popular votes. However, in the electoral college system, it is possible for candidates to win a majority of electoral votes, and therefore the presidency, without winning the nationwide popular vote. This scenario has occurred three times in United States history: in 1876, when Rutherford B. Hayes beat Samuel Tilden; in 1888, when Benjamin Harrison defeated Grover Cleveland; and in 2000, when George W. Bush prevailed over Al Gore. Another president who lost the popular vote was John Quincy Adams, who was elected in 1824 by the House of Representatives after no candidate received a majority in the electoral college.

If you back on elections for the last 40 years or so you will see at this time of year the DEM running for President will have a huge lead, look at Jimmy Catrer in 76,the DEMS were a lock to win, this was right after Watergate. Jimmy Carter ended up winning by 2 points, if ht eelection would have been 2 weeks later he probably would have lost. Obama should have a 20 point lead after the leadership of Bush but it isn’t happening, Obama can only go down from here.

Breaking news: NYT refused McCain’s op-ed on Iraq war (rebutting Obama’s Iraq op-ed) because McCain REFUSED NY Time’s demand that McCain set out specific timetable for withdrawal! As the Fox newscaster asked(she was obviously surprised) when trying to clarify what the McCain camp said about the NYT’s refusal to run McCain’s op-ed, “So, let me get this right, the New York Times is trying to set foreign policy?” (paraphrased)

Comment by Indy | 2008-07-21 13:42:52

I just read about that earlier today. What is ironic is that a media organization like the NYT is practicing censorship, and trying to mold the content of a presidential canditate’s OP-ED. They decide who is afforded first amendment rights? My brain hurts.

Comment by Tuppence 411 | 2008-07-21 13:21:14

The polls shouldn’t surprize anyone. He is losing his left wing base to the alternative canidates over FISA and Iraq. On top of it all, Barky Nobama has never been able to close the deal. Never. “Undecided” and “late deciders” break against him. Always have. Always will. Exact opposite of Hillary. Any concerns late deciders had over Hillary were superficial. She could and did overcome them. Contrast to Obama where the undecided voters concerns over him are much more substantial- an unknown with conflicting values and principals.

He’s toast and we all will be stuck with a Republican in the Whitehouse for at least another 4 years. THE DNC sucks. Picks losers!

Comment by OhVoter | 2008-07-21 13:42:30

The number in the Rasmussen poll that sticks out to me is that only 77% of Democrats support him. That doesn’t even take into account how many democrats have switched their party affilliation to Independent specifically because of their opposition to Barack Obama. If I were contacted by a pollster I would say I was an Independent and would not be counted in with the Dem results.

It is hard to keep track of the news via a blackberry – but did the NY Times really reject a Senator McCain penned op/ed after printing one from Senator Obama?? I can’t figure out the explanation from my blackberry but – with the fact the three network anchors went overseas with Senator Obama and NOT Senator McCain – it sure looks like unfair coverage. Whether your candidate is Senator Obama or Senator McCain, I am sure you agree the media should strive for equal coverage so that each can get his message out. It is important to democracy that the media perform this function fairly so that voters can make informed choices. The media should not play favorites or try and pick the next President. It is impossible to be perfactly [sic.] even in covering candidates but effort is important. I am anxious to study this issue when I get back to my office – it is hard to totally have all the facts when operating from a blackberry. But I confess that the facts I do have looks like the media needs to take another look at how candidates are BOTH covered fairly.
What do YOU think??? (By the way, I am reading your comments but can’t reply on my blackberry for some reason.)

Look for Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) to be soon added to the public short list of names Sen. Barack Obama is considering to be his running mate.

First Read makes the case: “The Rhode Island senator, who is on the overseas trip with Obama, has been to Iraq 11 times (and voted against the original Iraq war resolution)… The widely respected voice on national security is a 1971 West Point grad, though he did not fight in Vietnam. The Army Ranger paratrooper, who eventually commanded the 82nd Airborne, was assigned elsewhere… Father was a school custodian and WWII vet… Was on a trip to Afghanistan with McCain and Lieberman when he first met his wife… Took weekly art classes at the age of 5 at the Rhode Island School of Design… Big Will Ferrell fan and drives a 1991 Ford Escort… Differing with Obama, he was against the 1991 Gulf War and voted against the recent compromise FISA legislation.”

Look how stunning she is as a woman who would not seem too young and serving as arm candy on the ticket (Gov. Sarah Palin.) She highlights McCain’s moderate and bipartisan appeal. She is progressive and whipsmart with a lengthy resume of accomplishments in the Senate. She has become widely known for her ability to influence close votes and Senatorial filibusters, in part making her one of the most influential modern U.S. Senators.

In 2006, she was named one of “America’s Top Ten Senators” by Time Magazine. Her political popularity in her home state is the highest of any current U.S. Senator; as of November 22, 2006, she enjoyed a 79 percent approval rating in her home state of Maine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muZ96HDCUSE

She looks like Maria Callas (Jackie O) and has an inspirational life story. She sounds like one of the Kennedys. She could challenge Obama’s legacy appeal by reminding America of the actual figures.

I forgot to label the link. It is 6.03.08: Day 2 of Senate debate on climate change bill. Olympia Snowe gives an informative speech about a bipartisan bill sponsored by McCain and Lieberman with support from Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Amy Kobluchar and John Kerry. It gives insight into what John McCain’s energy policy would be, as well as demonstrating what an effective legislator Olympia Snowe is and her grasp of current issues.

Time’s Baghdad correspondent on Obama’s visit — the lede:

Iraq Unsure How to Greet Obama
Sunday, Jul. 20, 2008 By ABIGAIL HAUSLOHNER/BAGHDAD
As Barack Obama gets set to visit Iraq this week as part of a high-profile tour of Europe and the Middle East, Iraq seems unsure of just how to receive him. “Obama is a well-liked person. You feel it when he talks because he’s genuine and passionate about what he says — he’s not acting,” says supermarket attendant, Bassam Obeid in central Baghdad. “But this visit is just for election publicity, and 16 months [for U.S. combat troop withdrawal] is an exaggeration.” Leila Mohammed, a housewife in Baghdad’s Karrada district, also shrugged at the significance of the visit-the first Obama will make to the war zone since clinching the Democratic nomination. “There is no need for Obama to meet [Iraq's Prime Minister] Nouri al-Maliki until after he has been elected,” she said.

(To be completely clear, the 6-point lead in Gallup actually isn’t any more significant than the narrowing spread in Rasmussen. The point is that there are some small variations, that Obama has come down a bit from his post-primary peak, but that he’s maintaining a small but resilient lead.)

The Obama camp would probably tell us that this just demonstrates how stupid Americans are compared to everyone else. I prefer the phrase “familiarity breeds contempt.”

Angela Merkel wouldn’t be happy about that, but then Obama thinks we need fewer women in politics (Alice Palmer, Hillary Clinton, Regina Thomas come immediately to mind.)

Terrific post John!
I cannot tolerate Ed Schultz. He’s been in the tank for the Error Apparent since Day 1. So absolutely horrible to Hillary and Bill. I cannot stand the sound of his voice. He hates the Clintons so much that I think perhaps he made a pass at one of them and she/he turned him down! I guess he can’t get over the rejection. He shares BO’s arrogance and inflated ego.

Let’s e cautious about these polls.

As I pointed out in my interview on the Blog Bunker on July 11, we don’t know a lot about how these polls are actually conducted.

For example, what is a “likely voter”?? This universe is broader than a poll among “registered voters”. But a “likely voter” may include those who voted in how many previous elections? It’s not specified.

Also,we have no idea of who is included in “leaners.”

Rasmussen is no better or worse than what others do, including Survey USA, which openly states that it “weights” their samples (and they are owned by “news journalists”–who are they?)

Then there is Gallup, which is really into collecting data for business…not the place I knew when I worked there!!

I wrote about this a few weeks ago. You may be interested in the info on Gallup and Zogby, as well as the general discussion of polling practices in general…

It’s easy to figure out. You don’t have to be a Republican to want to drill for oil. If it didn’t lower the price a penny, I would rather our money stay here and provide jobs than just send it overseas. I also think holding out for alternative will lead to massive layoffs. No election is worth tipping this economy to a depression

That’s the lowest level of support measured for Obama since he clinched the Democratic Presidential nomination on June 3…

Ahhh mmm correct mee if I am wrong but BO did not”clinched the Democratic Presidential nomination”.

Just sayin.

I decided to ditch any support for Air America radio when every single host they had all went in the tank for Obama. I thought it was supposed to be a liberal, progressive radio station for ALL Democrats, but you’re telling me that not ONE SINGLE HOST supported Hillary? Not one? What about the 18 million of us that did? They just didn’t give a damn about us! As a matter of fact, they didn’t just SUPPORT Obahblah, they denigrated Hillary – made fun of her, criticized her, etc. Most of the hosts even came right out & endorsed Obama during the primary, which is unprecendented! I have NO RESPECT for the owner of Air America or any of those hosts – I don’t know what they are, but they’re NOT DEMOCRATS – at least not like any I’ve ever known.

When Obama’s poll numbers soar after his visit, you all owe me and supporters of Barack a steak dinner.

I predict that when the adoring news shows pictures of Barack Obama with a million screaming Germans at the Siegessäule, the heartland of America will be even less impressed with him.

The column originally stood in front of the Reichstag, Germany’s parliament building, but was moved by Adolf Hitler to its current location in 1939 to make way for his planned transformation of Berlin into the Nazi capital “Germania.”

“The Siegessäule in Berlin was moved to where it is now by Adolf Hitler. He saw it as a symbol of German superiority and of the victorious wars against Denmark, Austria and France,” the deputy leader of the Free Democrats, Rainer Brüderle, told Bild am Sonntag. He raised the question as to “whether Barack Obama was advised correctly in his choice of the Siegessäule as the site to hold a speech on his vision for a more cooperative world.”

Andreas Schockenhoff of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats said, “the Siegessäule in Berlin is dedicated to a victory over neighbors who are today our European friends and allies. It is a problematic symbol.”

The Guardian’s Gary Younge has a pretty good take on the real reason for Obama’s popularity in Europe:

People see in Obama what they want to see

The real story is in the electoral college. A current analysis (done by NPR no less) shows McCain with a commanding lead over Obama in likely electoral votes. Obama has an uphill battle at the very time when his popularity should be at its peak. Instead, he’s well behind and his campaign is collapsing, particularly with regard to fund raising.

What you are going to see, as the republican machine starts up at the end of august, is McCain pulling well ahead. McCain is only now uniting the GOP behind him, even clinching the crucial religious conservative vote (something that would have been thought unlikely a few months ago) with key endorsements coming out soon. It’s because of Obama. Conservatives are demoralized over the Bush administrations failure to adhere to the conservative agenda (to disastrous effect I might add) but they know just how bad Obama is and are getting behind McCain simply to prevent the democrats from destroying our country.

The real problem here (for the dems I mean) is if the conservatives manage to convince McCain to be a strong conservative candidate. If that happens, the nation will prosper under two terms of republican leadership. If that happens, the dems might not recover for 10 to 20 years.

What a pathetic squandering of opportunity the whole Obama campaign has been. The kindest thing I can say about it is, maybe, FINALLY, the dems will get serious about reform….and purge itself of the radical elements.
