I’m Glad You Finally Made it to Europe, Barack

Jake Tapper’s story today is Obama On Tonight’s Berlin Speech: “A Crapshoot”. Last week, the razor-sharp Tapper zeroed in on a story that we’ve covered here at No Quarter many times. Joe Wilson, Larry Johnson and I, as well as other writers, have all noted that Obama has failed to DO HIS JOB as Chair of the Subcommittee on European Affairs (including NATO) — holding no hearings and making no trips to Europe during his tenure as chair because, as he admitted in a primary debate, he’s been too busy running for president:

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden, D-Del., had previously told Meet the Press that "the reason Obama didn’t hold a hearing on NATO, I chair the committee. Every one of those committee hearings are held at full committee."

But today [July 17, 2008] Biden decided to take his defense of Obama one step further, writing to DeMint that there have been plenty of hearings on European Affairs, they’ve just been held at the "full committee level."

"On the particular issue of NATO’s mission in Afghanistan," Biden wrote, "We have held three Full Committee hearings in the last 22 months: one under Senator Lugar’s chairmanship (September 21, 2006: “From Coalition to ISAF Command in Afghanistan: The Purpose and Impact of the Transition”), and two undermine (March 8, 2007: “Afghanistan: Time for a New Strategy?” and January 21, 2008: “Afghanistan: A Plan to Turn the Tide?”).  At all three of these hearings, we were fortunate enough to have the expert testimony—in addition to other witnesses, both in and out of government— of former NATO commander and Supreme Allied Commander-Europe, Gen. James R. Jones (USMC, ret.)."

But Biden’s letter brought attention to the fact that Obama did not attend two of those three hearings — and for the third, on March 8, 2007, Obama only asked one question, one unrelated to Afghanistan. …

Don’t miss how Jake Tapper knows that Obama asked only one question, irrelevant to Afghanistan:

How do I know the latter fact? From an August 2007 press release from Biden himself, when he was running for president.

"BIDEN CAMPAIGN CONGRATULATES SEN. OBAMA FOR JOHNNY-COME-LATELY POSITION," it read. Noting that at the March 2007 hearing, "Sen. Obama asked one question that was unrelated to Taliban or Afghanistan."

Thanks, Joe!

Maureen Dowd notes an unintended consequence of Mr. Obama’s popularity in Europe that will create consternation among voters in the U.S.:

Even if Obama is treated as a superstar by W.-weary Europeans, some Obama-wary Americans may wonder what he’s doing there, when they can’t pay for gas, when the dollar is the Euro’s chew toy, when Bud is going Belgian and when the Chrysler Building has Arab landlords.

“I don’t know that people in Missouri are going to like seeing tens of thousands of Europeans screaming for The One,” a McCain aide snarked to The Politico.

Susan, it’s all photo-op with Barack:

Hello everyone,

As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to ‘ The War Zone ‘ . I wanted to share with you what happened.

He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram.

As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand, he blew them off and didn’t say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service.

So really he was just here to make a showing for the Americans back home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you.

I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States . I just don’t understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country.

If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake.

In service,

CPT J
Bagram, Afghanistan

This is a message to the blog owner at “Blackfive.” The owner had 16 years of military service. If one reads his “about” page he’s a totally convincing person, and he just happens to really care about this country and the military. Read a few of the stories — they are about the heroes one never reads about. I don’t think he had any axe to grind.

Well, what did ya expect? Soldiers are members of the God-and-gun clinging bitter folk that Obama has no time for unless we’re talking about a photo-op. He’s like the phony Hollywood craphead who wants to “thank all the little people” when he/she wins the Oscar but spits on them the rest of the time.

Obama: if it weren’t for sh*t, he’d have no brains at all!

It won’t be a free world if Obama has his way. Keep in mind, there is no fun in Islam….

Ayatollah Khomeini, 1979

“Allah did not create man so that he could have fun. The aim of creation was for mankind to be put to the test through hardship and prayer. An Islamic regime must be serious in every field. There are no jokes in Islam. There is no humor in Islam. There is no fun in Islam. There can be no fun and joy in whatever is serious.”

Completely unimpressed by the world tour and angry at his snubbing the wounded vets.

Obama senior adviser Robert Gibbs told us in a statement, “During his trip as part of the CODEL to Afghanistan and Iraq, Senator Obama visited the combat support hospital in the Green Zone in Baghdad and had a number of other visits with the troops.

For the second part of his trip, the senator wanted to visit the men and women at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to express his gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”

Comment by MaryPat | 2008-07-24 13:50:37

Wait…I thought he was on a Congressional fact-finding mission with Senators Hagel and Reed.

Is he actually admitting that the whole World Tour 2008 is just the big campaign rally the McCain people said it was?

Maybe he found some facts about the status of Jerusalem which he seems to think is presently the capital.
http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/07/obama_on_jerusalem_properly_ph.html

I was struck by his comment to Fareed Zakaria “You know, the truth is that this was an example where we had some poor phrasing in the speech.” Not “I”, “we”. Nothing like putting part of the blame on someone else. Of course he has chosen a 26 year-old to be his head speech writer so it is no wonder neither one of them knows what they are talking about.

“The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”

What total BS! The truth, I bet, is that he didn’t want to “waste” so much time with the soldiers when he had a grandiose speech to give in Berlin.

P.S. How many times has Obama visited Walter Reed? He IS on the Veterans committee, after all.

Comment by Zeke | 2008-07-24 14:00:18

How do you think it would look if that sonofabitch was to extend his hand for a shake and the soldier just stared him in the eye?
He wouldn’t risk being called the things he is by the men and women serving.

Comment by katmandu | 2008-07-24 14:05:29

Politico just skewered him for this:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0708/Obama_cancels_troop_visit.html?showall

[excerpted]

The optics here are not good: Obama has time to get in a workout and give a speech to a crowd mostly comprised of Europeans, but can’t be bothered to visit American troops wounded in action recovering at a military hospital.

Obama’s explanation strikes at much of the criticism he’s gotten from McCain and the GOP.

“The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign,” explains spokesman Robert Gibbs.

This is a sticky wicket for Obama.

On the one hand, he’s been criticized for the (laughable) contention that the trip is not related to the campaign. To clearly delineate those elements of the tour that are related to his role as a senator and those that are undeniably political would seem to be a way to respond to that critique and seperate church from state. Moreover, he’s being doubly safe by avoiding the perception of campaigning in a military hospital and using wounded troops as props.

But then how many politicians include official stops in the course of a trip otherwise related to a campaign (think POTUS or a member of Congress doing fundraising and public business on the same day). Further, Obama met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on this, the campaign-funded, part of his trek. If that was deemed ok, than are we to assume that each of his get-togethers with European leaders is political in nature?

Assuming their rationale was on the level and not just cover to give the candidate a breather, the easier move may have been to still visit Rammstein and Landstuhl but keep the press behind.

Comment by AnnieCarmel | 2008-07-24 14:19:51

This is the time for McCain to visit (probably has in the past) a military burn unit. I know he has visited the troops many times before but I think he has to rub it in that he’s there for them and BO is too busy taking bows.

Comment by Darryl | 2008-07-24 14:42:03

This is kinda like bush having time to go to the ranch and his daily run, but not having time to solve the economic crisis. Rememeber that.

Comment by BernieO | 2008-07-24 15:04:41

I always predicted that as soon as Bush was out of office that whole ranch schtick would be history. Sure enough they are looking for a house in Dallas. He blames this on Laura, but he only bought the ranch after he decided to run for president. If he really liked that lifestyle so much he would have had a place like that long before. Not like he couldn’t afford a second home.
The media let him get away with pretending to be a cowboy so he could appear Reaganesque. Vincente Fox called him on this when he wrote his memoir. He mocked Bush for not being able to even ride a horse. In fact, he said Bush seemed to be afraid of them.
What a phoney. And what losers are media are for falling for this kind of garbage again and again.

Comment by CheatedFLVoter | 2008-07-24 15:10:29

It wouldn’t surprise me if Laura wants that house for herself. She may let him stay at the ranch.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-07-25 00:23:56

It wasn’t a ranch, it was a pig farm. Ironic when you think how many times he insisted that his Saudi pals come for a little visit and a stroll amongst the bluebells.

Laura, former Democrat that she is, hated the place, and who can blame her? It was a shitty, hot, stage set for Bush. What it had going for it was ACREAGE–made it tough for the media to get close.

If he’d not been afraid of horses (”Hees hand, it was trrrembuling when he had to, you know, pat thee horse!!” said Vincente Fox, when he invited the Horsiephobic George to go riding with him–George declined the offer, and blamed it on the Secret Service not letting him “endanger” himself, though the horse Fox had chosen for him was an old nag and he tells the Secret Service what level of protection he wants, not the other way around) he might have pulled off the “Reagans on horseback” image–but he just didn’t have it in him. Chain saws and pickups do not a cowboy make.

He’s a phony, just like Obama is. They’re easy to spot–their insincerity just oozes out, no matter how hard they try to hide it.

He is a lot like Bush in this. I remember being shocked to read that as governor Bush would show up around 9 or so, work for a couple of hours, then take a LONG lunch break to exercise, eat and goof off. Then he would return to work until five. The man actually brags about how efficient he is! He still goes to bed early as president. Like he could get away with this crap if he didn’t have a staff working overtime to take care of things.

I heard the other day that Obama had worked out three times in one day for a total of about 3 hours and was creeped out. That is soooo like Bush. Granted Barack is smarter and not a right winger, but he shows the same excessive self-regard and overconfidence in his own judgment. That’s all we need - another bona fide narcissist running the show.

What walls is he talking about?? Reagan stealing hack!! I hated Reagan, but this guy should not even be allowed to say his name.

And the campaign signs at the Western Wall!!!! Just who does he think he is, this is the holiest site in the world and his campaign is plastering it, desecrating it with their God awful anti-american campaign signs.

Old, grumpy McCain is catching up on Internet warfare!!!
http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/7/is-barack-obama-losing-his-youtube-mojo-

Is Barack Obama Losing His YouTube Mojo?
If elections were held on YouTube, Barack Obama would win hands-down — so far. But the McCain campaign is making inroads on the Web, aided by some good old-fashioned attack ads.

McCain has beaten Obama in terms of viewers on YouTube (GOOG) on four of the last six days, thanks to the success of two ads: “Obama Love,” a montage of press fauning over Obama, and “Pump”, which blames Obama for high gas prices. The former has been viewed more than 176,000 times in two days, and the latter 140,000 times in three days.

To get a sense of how rare this is, McCain has beaten Obama on just two other days in video views since the campaign began: February 11, 2008 and November 29, 2007, according to TubeMogul. Thanks to his clever and aggressive use of video and obvious appeal to the YouTube generation, Obama has owned Web video: His clips have been watched 56 million times since the campaign began; McCain’s have been watched 4.5 million times.

But McCain’s team seems to be figuring out Web video. Or at the very least, they’re having a good week, according to TubeMogul:

To get a sense of how rare this is, McCain has beaten Obama on just two other days in video views since the campaign began: February 11, 2008 and November 29, 2007, according to TubeMogul. Thanks to his clever and aggressive use of video and obvious appeal to the YouTube generation, Obama has owned Web video: His clips have been watched 56 million times since the campaign began; McCain’s have been watched 4.5 million times.

But McCain’s team seems to be figuring out Web video. Or at the very least, they’re having a good week, according to TubeMogul:

Obama’s team of 50 video producers shoot thousands of documentary-like footage, and uploading videos at a breakneck pace. The Obama campaign’s YouTube channel has 1,177 videos, compared to McCain’s 224.

But McCain’s videos reflect a big difference in strategy. They consist of speeches and attack ads either made for the Web, like “Obama Love” or repurposed from TV, like “Pump.” The old wisdom is that the YouTube generation isn’t swayed by over-produced political propaganda. But then, with 83 million unique users, the YouTube generation is starting to look more like America. Here’s a look at the two that took down Obama this week:

How about posting the video of Obama’s Press Conference in Israel yesterday, i think it lasted maybe 15 minutes but the very being was the most telling part about Obama, the person and leader. First thing he said was “See that guy over there, he will be calling on reporters to ask a question, if he doesn’t call on you it’s not my fault, I WANT YOU ALL TO LIKE ME” Said like the perfect “People Pleaser”, can’t even make a decision as to who to call on and he wants the position of DECIDER???

Wanting to be liked is a weakness in a political leader.

He got a double-whammy in there “if he doesn’t call on you it’s not my fault, I WANT YOU ALL TO LIKE ME.”

I want a person of solid principles who is a &*() when required. I don’t care if I like them, just so long as that person knows what they are doing and gets it done.

I am still dumbfounded how BO saw fit to place political banners at one of most important religious locations on the planet. Judgement like has been deadly in the past. How is it he would not think twice to defile a holy place? You think he would do that at the Al-Masjid al-Ḥarām?

igit.

Meanwhile, according to Spiegel:

++ Visit to US Military Bases Cancelled ++

1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. “Barack Obama will not be coming to us,” a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. “I don’t know why.” Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.

Well as early as Monday he told Netenyahu “I could sleep standing up” from all the jetlag (that he revealed that in Israel, where they already think he’s way too soft, surely did not inspire confidence in BiBi Netenyaho.)

“Obama noted that in a break from his whirlwind schedule, “we’ve got some down time tonight. What are you guys (the press corps) gonna do in Berlin? Huh? Huh? You guys got any big. plans? …I’ve never been to Berlin, so…I would love to tour around a little bit.”

Ibama has no time to see the soldiers and wounded in Berlin because he wants to take in the sites.

I am sending Ibama an empty bottle with a note that reads, “Since I can’t be there in person to piss on you, please pee in the bottle and dump it on your head.” Signed, Citizen of the United States.

…yet Obama draws over 200K in Berlin.

Meanwhile, Grandpa McCain counters with…wait for it…a tour of various midwest towns named Berlin.

How many of the Deutchevolk will be voting in this election?
The only time to care about what Germans think is when they start with the World Domination stuff. The rest of the time, they just sit around believing they are still the master race.

Berlin has 3.5 million residents and attracts 90 million day visitors per year.

If Ibama went to New York the Press could write that 11 million showed up. …. no, wait, they already were there.

Comment by I, Bama | 2008-07-24 16:17:07

The pre-Berlin speech hype had us expecting ONE MILLION attendees.

I was under the impression German citizens have better things to do than to spend a fine summer day cheering on an empty suit.

You know, like working really hard and being industrious, or nude sunbathing at some Baltic Sea resort.

Yet his numbers are up. Go Grampa! Americans aren’t impressed…and we are the ones, after all, who will be voting.

But wait it could be Tommy Christopher trying to gather more material to trash Larry and No Quarter and PUMA with. To be sure he is upset with the drastic drop off of posters to that site, and he knows all the negatives posted against Obama’s
PPP Tom, Tom Fitz or Tommy.

Just when I think there is no way I could despise that sonofabitch any more, he gives me more reason.
I volunteered for Special Forces during the Vietnam War solely because I could see the awful horror that totalitarian rule could impose on human beings and knew I had to do what I could to stop that from happening. I was a peaceful young man who became a lethal one because I could see that writing on the wall.
Well, the writing is there again and I shall not sit idly by. I am not alone in my beliefs and know that if an attempt is made by a future President Obama to place a military force inside the borders of MY country, that there will be blood. Theirs.

Obama may be in violation of the Logan Act, described at the bottom of this post.

One blogger said she called the White House and the White House is interested in hearing from us.
