Forgive Them Father

My colleagues are in high dudgeon today over the outrage perpetrated on The Child in Jerusalem; you know, Notegate at the Wailing Wall. Everyone seems to be SHOCKED, OUTRAGED and DEEPLY OFFENDED that The Chosen One could be made to suffer such an indignity, such a gross violation of privacy. This infraction is so completely and utterly offensive that even people I know who don’t like Obama and have no intention of voting for him are aghast, saying that this act is beyond the pale because this was the one gesture of Barack’s Excellent Adventure that was actually “heartfelt” and “sincere”. It just goes to show you that the old adage that some people will believe anything, no matter how self-serving, phony, hypocritical, opportunistic or downright savage, if a man of the cloth is in the vicinity giving his blessing - or better yet, if the act in question is carried out directly by a “religious leader.”

And you know who’s to blame for all these outrages being perpetrated on The Child, don’t you?

Of course! The Jews! They never learn, do they? They’re crucifying The Chosen One (in Jerusalem, no less!) just like they did to Jesus!

While everyone is busy gnashing their teeth and rending their garments, may I be so bold as to remind all the umbrage-takers that on July 9th, Obama voted for the FISA Amendments Act, which “expanded the president’s warrantless surveillance authority and unconstitutionally granted retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that participated in the president’s illegal domestic wiretapping program.” So forgive me if I’m not heartbroken over Obama’s innermost thoughts being revealed to the world by nosy strangers.

And now’s as good a time as any to let everyone know I’ll be hosting another installment of Hour of Power on Tuesday, July 29th at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Formal announcement to follow.

UPDATE: Statement from Maariv: “Obama’s note was published in Maariv and other international publications following his authorization to make the content of the note public. Obama submitted a copy of the note to media outlets when he left his hotel in Jerusalem. Moreover, since he is not Jewish, there is no violation of privacy as there would be for a Jewish person who places a note in the wall.”

oddly taegon’s site, which slobbers over obama daily, has one of their headlines today that bambi leads by “double digits”!

they’ll go to any lengths to find any kind of poll nationally to say what they want to hear.

Comment by havoc | 2008-07-28 14:35:32

That poll showing McCain ahead is the only one out of 7 with those results. In addition it has the smallest sampling. You guys are really reaching.

Comment by Matthew | 2008-07-28 14:51:52

Explain then why Obama’s polling advantage has been down in the bluest of blue states in other polls?

Sample Rasmussen Polls:
California down by 18 pts.
New Hampshire down by 7 pts
Minnesota down by 13 pts.
Colorado down by 7 points.
Main down by 14 points.
Washington down by 10 points.

Because he’s tacking to the center, which loses him ground in liberal states which he has no chance of losing, but helps him make up ground in states with larger numbers of moderate voters.

Gee, that was easy. Next!

Comment by fif | 2008-07-28 15:14:37

Coloradio and NH are not blue states idjit. Also, check out the swing states where McCain is gaining and Obama dropping. And still the 527 avalanche to come. B’bye.

Comment by Anon22 | 2008-07-28 15:38:42

Take it up with the person I was responding to, rube. Those are his words, not mine. As for CO, “Matthew” is flat-out lying–Obama went from +2 in their June poll to +3 in July, obviously well within the margin of error, and certainly not “down by 7″ which is just a made-up fantasy number. He’s right that Obama lost 7 in NH, but NH is preposterously volatile, reacts in crazy ways to small shifts in the campaign, and the July poll was done at the end of the “Obama is a flip flopper” attack cycle and before Obama’s foreign trip happened.

As for swing states more generally, numbers are all over the place. Quinnipiac gave him some bad news on Thursday, then Rasmussen and R2k came back with good news on Friday. I don’t expect the trip to have a dramatic short-term effect, but the long-term consequences of Obama’s demonstrating his statute on the world stage and Maliki’s endorsement of Obama’s timetable will become apparent in October, when McCain gets creamed in the debates and drowned on the airwaves.

Comment by Tuppence 411 | 2008-07-28 16:33:50

Thanks for the laughs Anon 22 ” McCain gets creamed in the debates and drowned on the airwaves.” Oh that was funny. Your shitty canidate sucks at debates remember? Remember Hillary wiping the floor with his ass- as he says “ummm. ahhh umm”? The reason why he hasn’t debated since PA and why he turned down the Townhalls? He can’t think on his feet, needs a speech writer and teleprompter. I can’t wait for the debates. They will be so much fun seeing Barky Nobama naked without his stagecraft. HA! Put down the kool-aid and get a dose of reality.

Comment by Anon22 | 2008-07-28 16:44:19

Obama is not a great debater. But McCain is fucking awful. He’s going to get trounced. He doesn’t do any type of public speaking well, whether it be teleprompted speeches, press conferences, or yes, even town halls, where he is, admittedly, marginally less bad than he is in other formats. But what’s even worse than McCain’s personal lack of charisma is that his entire campaign has been essentially pulled out from under him in the last week, with Maliki endorsing Obamas’s withdrawal timetable. McCain’s skating on that now, with the media’s assistance, but you can be damn sure Obama isn’t going to let him skate on it in the debates or in the October ad war. There is simply no way McCain will recover from the deathblow the Iraqi government dealt his campaign.

Comment by Tuppence 411 | 2008-07-28 16:54:34

You are eating too many cheetos and drinking too much kool-aid- it’s frying your brain cells. McCain is better on his feet, answering questions than Obama. Remember, McCain won against Huckabee, Romney, Guliani, et al…..all better speech givers than him.

If your shitty canidiate wasn’t afraid of debates, he wouldn’t have run away from Hillary’s challange. SISSY Barky NObama. C’mon just look at McCain- the man eats sissies for breakfast.

McCain beat out the jokesters in the GOP field by default and by party nominating rules that produce an avalanche for the candidate with early momentum. He was not impressive during the primary debates, and he will not impress when matched up against Obama. Fundamentally, he is hampered by the fact that he is, quite rightly, tied to the most unpopular President in history, and that almost all of his policy positions are unpopular with Americans. Then this week he ran into the further problem that Iraq doesn’t like his Iraq policy. Put it all together, and it will make for a disaster in a head-to-head matchup. John McCain is going to lose all of the presidential debates decisively.

I’m surprised. Obama is ahead in the other Gallup poll; I’m sure it’s the polling assumptions, e.g., what % of a certain demographic will turn out to vote.

Wow.

Comment by Anon22 | 2008-07-28 15:09:51

Correct, although it’s also actually a separate poll, done by commission for USAToday. However, the major difference, as you surmise, is the LV screen, which is kind of shoddy this far in advance of the election, but conceivably still more accurate than RVs. Regardless, one polling result that goes in the opposite direction of several others is generally known as an “outlier,” which is what Gallup/USAT looks like.

Comment by Tuppence 411 | 2008-07-28 16:47:15

Oh my Anon22, now you are lecturing us on the difference between “likely voters” and “registered voters”. Throwing around jargon like LV and RV.

Likely voters are registered and they have a history of going to the polls. Their names are pulled from past election records.

Registered voters are eligible to vote, but may or may not have ever even voted in their life. For all you know they signed up at the DMV or at a registration rally and don’t even know where to go vote.

I have voted in every local, state and federal primary and election since 1984. I am a likely voter and I say “NO DEAL”

Comment by Anon22 | 2008-07-28 17:28:58

LV screens are generally not made public; each pollster considers its LV model proprietary information, whether it has a proven track record or not. Nevertheless, we do know that there are factors beyond past voting behavior that go into LV screens. One is self-reported likelihood of voting, which can oscillate in strange ways during the summer “down” months. Another is interest in and attention to political news coverage. Measuring those factors in July and then trying to use them to project who will vote in August is a dicey business. The pollsters don’t deny this, they just do the best they can. Which is fine. But to get all excited about one outlier showing a McCain lead when even the pollster themselves is acknowledging this has a lot to do with their LV screen, and that they aren’t too sure how well it’s projecting November from attitudes in July is irrational (par for the course around here, I realize).

One other thing: to the extent the LV screens do take prior voting behavior into account, it is possible that they are seriously underestimating one of the key strengths that helped Obama win the primaries, namely his appeal to first-time voters, particularly young voters, many of whom were ineligible to vote in the last presidential election (which is generally what the LV screen for a presidential contest measures from, for reasons I don’t understand—it’s not as if many people vote in a midterm election, and then sit out the presidential contest two years later). Generally, assuming that someone who has not voted before won’t vote this time is a safe assumption. But for this election, it may not be. We’ll have to wait and see.

Comment by Jillie | 2008-07-28 17:42:26

you seem to forget about the biggest block of likely voters…in fact, the most reliable voting block. seniors.

you see, the general election is not made up of caucuses. people can go and vote, and not have to spend hours standing, waiting, being bullied.

ah..i love america.

Comment by Anon22 | 2008-07-28 17:48:24

Most reliable, but also reliably projected to be a smaller portion of the electorate than the younger middle-aged set , where Obama is beating McCain. As for the truly young, they tend to turn out big in “realigning” elections, which this one is set to be.

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1005749.html

“Twice a year, when the cracks in the Wall become full, the prayers and messages are removed and buried - without being read - in strict accordance with Jewish law.”

At the very least, it seems thoroughly disrespectful on an ethical level to remove an individual’s prayer from its intended resting place at a holy site. If Obama had already released the text of the letter, why steal and scan the actual note?

Comment by Kelly | 2008-07-29 00:17:36

A difference, yes. However, the only way obama was harmed is if he believed that burying the scrap of paper would get his prayers heard by God. Since he is a Christian (who does not celebrate x-mas, which is OK), he likely does not proscribe to the Jewish faith and its rituals.

Even IF he believes, his note will still get buried. So, if he passed the note first, then he was not worried about the part of the ritual that involves confidentiality.

Will Howard Dean/Pelosi soon press the panic button? The latest USA Today/Gallup is out, McCain is now having a 4-point lead among likely voters, which is a HUGE turnaround.

————————
http://blogs.usatoday.com/onpolitics/2008/07/gains-for-mccai.html

Republican presidential candidate John McCain moved from being behind by 6 points among “likely” voters a month ago to a 4-point lead over Democrat Barack Obama among that group in the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll. McCain still trails slightly among the broader universe of “registered” voters. By both measures, the race is tight.

The Friday-Sunday poll, mostly conducted as Obama was returning from his much-publicized overseas trip and released just this hour, shows McCain now ahead 49%-45% among voters that Gallup believes are most likely to go to the polls in November. In late June, he was behind among likely voters, 50%-44%.

Among registered voters, McCain still trails Obama, but by less. He is behind by 3 percentage points in the new poll (47%-44%) vs. a 6-point disadvantage (48%-42%) in late June.

Results based on the survey of 791 likely voters have margins of error of +/- 4 percentage points — so McCain’s lead is not outside that range. Results based on the survey of 900 registered voters also have margins of error of +/- 4 percentage points.

Gallup editor Frank Newport tells Jill that “registered voters are much more important at the moment,” because Election Day is still 100 days away, but that the likely-voter result suggests that it may be possible for McCain to energize Republicans and turn them out this fall.

Its intriguing to note that the author thinks McCain will need to energize Rep’s. Barry seems to be doing a bang-up job of that on his own!

i’m kind of feeling like the whole thing was staged by the bobot gang.

thus…the revealing wonderfulness of mr obama’s simple prayer. how he is just like us.

“heartfelt and sincere”…perhaps, but still staged to make him look like mr. everyman.

and the bobots get to also take umbrage at the same time. it’s win/win for them.

brilliant piece of fakery. anyone who fell for it is too close to the kool aid.

sorry…i just be a little too jaded at this point to underestimate the tomfoolery of the obamacoup.

no vote for obama here.

keep freedom ringing.

That was my thought, too, - that he planted it. He’s just not trustworthy, and as politicians go, that’s pretty significant. Your gut reaction is usually correct. I don’t think anything is too sneaky or backhanded for Barry.

It was reported last night that Barry’s people gave another copy of his note for publication and that the ruse of someone taking his note public was INTENTIONAL.
There is nothing this piece of shit will not do to make himself look other than he truly is.

I certainly hope the MSM and the DNC understand that those of us they have lost will not be changed back. It will be fun to see them waste their breath, paper and ink though.

I have been an enemy of republicans for a long time and now I enjoy their ads so much that I donate money to ensure they get to air! I am shocked and amazed at how Obama is a great uniter…of republicans and dems against his sorry ass! Hahaha. you reap what you sow! My original thought was, ok, I’ll vote McCain albeit reluctantly, but no campaigning and no contributions. Well, surprise! I hate the fraud thta much!

As far as I am concerned, for me, I could vote today because nothing will change my stance from now until doomsday! All they really have against McCain is age. Well, McCain could drop dead next week and I’d still want the dead guy over slimy Barry.

The only reason to wait for November is for more of Barry’s fans to wake up!

Once the dem convention is over and we see if those fools stick with the loser, my yard signs are going up. #1 My Hillary vote is going to McCain and #2 PUMA.

I won’t deface my yard with anything that has Obi’s face or name on it as much as I like some of those nobama signs, I just can’t stomach anything Obamboozlerish around me!

Why do I suspect that Obama assumed that someone would probably read his prayer? If not, he is hopelessly naive. (Repainting the American flag on the tail of his plane with his own symbol suggests the latter, so maybe I am misreading him.)

I despise invasions of privacy but as you point out Obama did give Bush the right to snoop without any consequences - even on him and his campaign.(Iim back to the naive explanation.)

Here is the text of the prayer:
“Lord — Protect my family and me. Forgive me my sins, and help me guard against pride and despair. Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just.

Maybe I am being picky but I expected him to pray for peace for the people in the region, help for the leaders trying to negotiate a settlement, etc. After all he was standing at the center of the region which is the source of so much violence and anger and which destabilizes the entire region. Instead he was focused entirely on himself.

The Lord’s going to have to work some to help guard Obama from pride.

Pride goeth before the fall, or so I’ve heard. I’ve got my fingers crossed, at any rate.
