I can’t quote specs for what constitutes “adequate armor”. I only know that the troop carriers originally deployed essentially didn’t have any. Troops were outfitting their vehicles with “hillbilly armor”. (Their term, not mine.) They were trying to protect themselves by welding on salvaged steel plates and stacking the floors with sandbags. “Not adequate”, to my way of thinking.

The fact that the DoD eventually recognized the problem and began ordering more protective vehicles surely tells us something.

I recently saw a video of a soldier being knocked down by a sniper in Iraq, only to get up a moment later and scurry for cover. His ceramic plate body armor saved his life. Had he been wearing one of the Kevlar vests originally issued to troops, he’d be dead. A lot of the soldiers we first deployed didn’t even get those. This is another situation I define as “inadequate”.
