If We Were to Psychoanalyze Mr. Obama …

Here are some questions I’d have:

presidentchair.jpgLast night I read, and shared with the NoQ writers, the CBS story about the chair on Obama’s plane. It says President. [Ani has since written the story.]

Then there is the O on the tail of the plane that has replaced the flag of the United States.

Then there was the faux Presidential seal. And on and on.

First, what kind of staff would do this for someone not even yet nominated?

Second, what kind of candidate would permit such presumptuous adornments that the media can spot, and report on to the public?

Does his ego require that much stroking?

Usually, even people with large egos have the common sense to know that such adornments are unseemly, and don’t permit them. Why does he not have the capacity to see how this makes him look?

Do his staff members not have the ability to tell him that it is unseemly? Or do they genuinely, apparently, think, like he, that it is not presumptuous?

I am genuinely interested in what professional psychoanalysts would have to say about all of this.

I remain perplexed why someone would use such presumptuous symbolism, and does not have the common sense to realize that such symbols inevitably backfire.

The real question here is: why are so many people buying or drinking hos koolaid? Analyze that, because whatever tricky Barky is, Millions adore him. What are they looking for? What are they expecting? What’s wrong with them?

Comment by Mirlo | 2008-08-05 02:46:55

typo: his koolaid

Comment by BernieO | 2008-08-05 07:08:35

My question is why the Republicans are giving him a pass on painting over the American flag on the tail of his plane with his own symbol. I would love to hear someone ask Barack if he will do the same thing to Air Force One if he wins.

What type of person would still nominate a fool like this?

Didn’t they learn after eight years of the shame, embarrasment and destruction caused by GWB?

BHO is a fool… Remember, The Emperor’s New Clothes? He is in the same situation and the people tolerating him, praising him, defending him like Kerry, Daschle, Pelosi, Brazille, Oprah, Maria, Caroline, Wexler, etc. are like the crazy townspeople in the story. They should read the book again (LOL !!!!!!!!)

What kind of person would permit such use of symbols in his honor? Someone, with an huge ego, who does not have a clear sense of reality.

Comment by Andrew | 2008-08-04 21:45:37

Tiny ego. He has no core convictions which make up the ego. Instead, he borrows from others. For someone to be so afraid of what they believe, their ego and self-esteem must be tiny. Furthermore, his need of adulation speaks to a deeper psychological problem. He is very damaged.

Obama is a narcissist. Narcissists do not recognize their boundry in society. They need adoration and worship.

Looking at his history, he manuevered himself near people who would stroke him and use him in a way that would bring him glory.

Drug users (alcoholics included) have psych issues. These people leave their drugs, but whatever issue they have remains. Bush and Obama we know were drug users. We’ve seen the results of one addictive personality in the WH, and now the Democrats want equal time by giving the voters another addictive personality candidate. Maybe that’s why BO has not released his medical records.

Comment by Linda | 2008-08-04 20:25:44

Yep, that’s what I said. And just like Bush, not able to admit mistakes or apologize.

Me thinks he fried too many brain cells while partying.

Fried eggs come to my mind. lol

Comment by Andrew | 2008-08-04 21:48:39

Obama isn’t like Bush he is the anti-Bush. Bush stood by his decisions even if they were stupid, Obama changes his mind at the drop of the hat. While Bush might be misguided in his beliefs, Obama has no beliefs. He simply sponges off of others and moves with the flow of public opinion. They is why he flip flops. You never caught Bush flip flopping to such a degree that people were left unaware of who he was. Obama is 100 times more dangerous than Bush.

Comment by Obama is a bum | 2008-08-05 01:27:20

I agree, I don’t think Bush vacillated on his positions, we pretty much always knew where he stood.

I have evolved to the point where I think it is disrespectful to compare Obama to any president, vice president, or any other presidential nominee of either party. I am guilty of this myself when I compared Obama to Carter for ineptitude. I apologize to Jimmy Carter for this. As bad as Carter was with the misery index, energy, etc. Obama is so much worse or potentially worse that a direct comparison such as Carter II would not be appropriate.

The more I understand of Obama the more I understand that Obama has set a standard so much lower than any president or nominee on so many levels that it is insulting to others to equate them to Obama.

Obama is in a league of his own and that needs to be stressed.

Comment by Obama is a bum | 2008-08-05 01:41:32

I mean equating Obama to others rather than comparing him to others.

I think you have it backwards, people have issues they can’t or won’t deal with, maybe the pain is too great for them. Using drugs or alcohol is just a symptom of their problems. Obama’s problem is abandonment by both of his parents. he never knew his father and his mother sent him away at age 10. Give this some thought, Fareed Zakaria interviewed Obama a couple weeks ago and he asked Obama what he remembered most about living in Indonesia. Obama said “It was when my Mother told me she married a man from Indonesia and we were moving there”. From that statement you can see how damaged he still is.

Comment by prabhata | 2008-08-04 21:30:19

What do I have backwards? You are saying the same thing. Obama has psych issues and used drugs to “help” him. Usually people leave the drugs, but the issues remain. We see what a loser Bush is, and Obama is not very accomplished either. By the time Hillary was his age she was ten times more accomplished. Drugs are just the symptom. You got that right. The idea that Obama was traumatized because he was abandoned by his father is only a guess. He should release his medical records to find out if he got psych help. As far as I know, Bush never did.

Comment by roseeriter | 2008-08-05 01:33:33

The other common factor with most addicts is they Lie and lie about Lying. They become con men/women and have to point the finger at others to deflect from themselves.

Thanks for the link, Paul. The stat that stood out for me is the Catholic vote [I come from a Catholic family]. Catholics represent approx. 65 million people in this country. After the primaries, Obama had a 11% lead. McCain now has taken a 15% advantage.

That’s a huge shift, a true deal breaker.

But then, we’re the “clingy” folks, the ones hanging onto our religion and guns, the ones the Obama camp said they didn’t need.

Obama needs to start panicking. If he is dropping ten and twenty percentage points in just a week, he needs to realize his scams aren’t working. Every time he tries to lie his poll numbers go down. This newest flip on the strategic oil reserve is definitely going to be damaging. McCain’s new program of handing out tire gauges labeled “Obama’s Energy Plan” is not only funny but humiliating to the Obama campaign. The race talk was also devastating. Obama is now the black candidate. The only change he supports is the change of his positions to suit the public sentiment.

The Senator’s Humble Beginning

Rising Star Barack Obama Is Resolutely Down to Earth

By Mark Leibovich

Washington Post Staff Writer

There’s nothing exotic or complicated about how phenoms are made in Washington, and, more to the point, how they are broken.

“Andy Warhol said we all get our 15 minutes of fame,” says Barack Obama. “I’ve already had an hour and a half. I mean, I’m so overexposed, I’m making Paris Hilton look like a recluse.”

Do not compare extremes of one person against another because the difference between Hill and Barry is night and day in every aspect, so watching my step is the least of things I have to do when talking about useless Bambi!

Comment by elise | 2008-08-04 21:53:41

DogLacky, if you read Hillary’s senior thesis, you will find she rejected Alinsky’s methods and chose instead to work inside the system. She was nineteen years old at the time Alinsky offered her a position in his Activist community and she turned him down flat. Is there any way, you would or could consider posting responses, relevant or otherwise without using Hillary’s name? Instead, why don’t you talk about FISA, public financing, faith based initiatives, off shore drilling etc?

Or you might want to discuss Obama’s thesis. It would seem there is a real issue there. No one can find it. Obama doesn’t have a copy, his prof. doesn’t and neither, apparently, does Columbia University. This is from Ben Smith @ politico.com

Conservative provocateurs have been hunting for it. Investigative journalists have been on the prowl, too. Even a former professor has been searching through old boxes for his copy of it. But today Barack Obama made it official: He doesn’t have and can’t release any copies of the thesis-length paper he wrote 25 years ago while a senior at Columbia University.

“We do not have a copy of the course paper you requested and neither does Columbia University,” Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt told NBC News. …

Yes, the moment anyone stops drinking the koolaid, they must go under the bus.

At the risk of being incredibly repetitive, it’s a mighty big bus.

He treats his supporters/voters like a man who is racking up notches on the bedpost. Once you’re in the stable, you’re in the stable and he can forget all about you — he doesn’t have to worry about your issues or stay loyal to you. As Obama (and the sexist Pres. of MSNBC also said in re our bristling at the disgusting Keith Olbermann) ‘where else are you gonna go?’

I guess we’ll see about that.

Conversely, those who refuse to vote for him are insulted, named as irrelevent, racist, clueless, etc., and then discarded.

This type of egotistical behavior cannot last him. There are a finite number of voters. People will not forget being insulted. Certainly some will continue to be rabid supporters, but not all. He is already losing some folks who were in his corner. I know a few personally who have finally had enough. These are loyal Democrats who were planning on supporting him and now have decided against it.

More of this kind of behavior from him will only whittle his numbers away even further.

No matter how Senator Obama or his surrogates try to play the race card to guilt people into voting for him, this will not work with the majority of thinking people.

Arrogance and hubris are very unattractive qualities. And very reckless, to boot. Certainly the more he reminds us of Bush, people will start to forget that Obama has a (D) after his name and either stay home or vote for McCain.

Been wondering the same thing.

Not being a psychoanalyst myself, the only thing that comes to mind is a book that was popular back in the 1970’s…..Winning Thru Intimidation.

Anybody else remember that one?
An example in that book is a salesman just starting out (can’t remember the industry) leases a prestigious car, purchases classy business cards and leather bound portfolios for presentations for the purpose of *appearing* to be the successful business man he aspired to be. And in showcasing himself this way, his potential clients presumed he was in fact already successful, and therefore were likely to trust that he was a good choice for the particular product/ service they were seeking.
And it worked for him.

NPD is generally thought to originate in childhood and has several different causes. There are several excellent sites that have very good psychological descriptions of what it is and how it originates. Just google narcissistic personality disorder.

Since I am not a psychologist I will not attempt to delve into an explanation. One of my favorite sites is called Ultimate Self. It is written so the lay person can understand it.

But I do belueve that Obama shows at least some signs of this disorder.

Comment by csuzeq | 2008-08-04 22:04:39

Most NPDs are also alcoholics or drug addicts. They usually carry alot of pain inside and use chemicals to cover it up. It is caused by severe neglect or abuse or trauma in childhood and really starts to take hold when the person is in their early 30s, although they typically appear to be very confident before that.

Yes, it is psychological, intended to boost his sense of authority, his comfort in that, like handing him a coat he can put so he’s comfortable in it. The question remains: why the hell does he need that? For godsakes! The presidency isn’t about him.

Comment by SHV | 2008-08-04 20:31:23

IANAP but Obama is a sociopath. The really frightening thing about Obama, compared to the sociopath currently in the WH, is that Obama believes his own lies. When Bush lies, which is most of the time, he gets that smirk which says “I now I am lying and those suckers are eating it up.” Obama changes his fictional life story daily along with his policies and politics. When challenged about a “flip/flop”, he usual response is “I haven’t changed..”You just haven’t been listening to me”. I really think he believes that..which is some really scary sh*t.

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2008-08-04 20:37:01

I dunno. I don’t think he’s a socio. I don’t think Bush is either. I think bush is just a spoiled manchild with a mean streak and of course, he’s a dry drunk. It explains a lot of his rigidity.

I think Obama is the Narcissist. Personality disorder. The pathological lying fits in. Lie, deny you said things. Argue that you really said something else. Blame others for anything that goes wrong. Never admit a mistake.

Bush and Obama do have a lot of similarities though. I just think Bush got high on himself because everybody blew smoke up his ass. Obama, I think, blows smoke up his OWN ass too.

Comment by Andrew | 2008-08-04 22:05:38

Again people. Obama is the opposite of Bush, both of which lie on the extreme. Bush is an example of a person who is rigid and unwilling to reassess his position. Obama is someone who has no beliefs and therefore changes his position with the polls.

Reading “Obama Nation” by Corsi and the take on his childhood is worse that I could have previously imagined.

Comment by hank48188 | 2008-08-04 20:50:22

Obama is damaged beyond repair from his childhood, it’s hard to imagine being abandoned first by your father and then years later by your mother too. Obama mother must have felt she was “Punished” by having Barack and probably told him that. that is why Obama used that term when talking about unwed mothers months ago. This damage turned Obama into a “People Pleaser”, he tries to please all the people all the time, that’s why he voted “Present” so much and why he refuses to vote quite often. He is not capable of being the DECIDER.

Comment by Annagain | 2008-08-04 20:52:57

Very interesting observations. Makes a lot of sense.

Comment by pasmalltowngirl | 2008-08-04 21:21:06

I agree, he is very damaged from his childhood. He gets abandoned first my his father. Then his mother remarries, has another child. His sister gets to live with his mother but he is shipped off to live with his grandmother, abandoned again. He said in his own words, that he had a typical “white” grandmother, She probably loved him but she also was probably racist and embarrassed having bi-racial grandson. She probably was a mean person, made him feel that it was his fault, that she had been disgraced by his birth. That him being abandoned was all his fault. I am sure he felt very unloved. Which is so sad, if that is the life he had. But that would explain his need to be the “one”. Adored and loved by all. Parents and grandparents who abandon their children or who constantly belittle their child, does every lasting damage.

Comment by Linda Meadows | 2008-08-05 02:02:31

After reading Obama’s sort of memoir, I think his grandmother was a victim of a lazy, failed husband who told Obama she was a racist to get out of criticism for being unwilling to take her to work. She worked and supported the family while grandpa played chess and tried to win Obama’s loyalty by bad-rapping the grandmother. Obama is a misogynist, abandoned he thought by his mother and told by gramps that grandma was a racist. He doesn’t like women which is why he was so disrespectful to HRC and why he said his wife was meaner than he. In fact, his mother always gave all her money to beggars in Indonesia and was disparaged by Lol, Obama’s stepfather. He told Obama that if he gave money to all the poor who asked he would just end up poor too. That I think suggests that Obama wants power and money, think big house (worth $1.65) while still a young man. He is not bad, but he is damaged and wants lots of praise and acceptance by the rich and powerful–and to knock them off, ie. I beat the Clinton’s; I win.

Psychoanalyzing Obama is a racist act.
……………………………………………

No it isn’t, it is expressing concern of someone that thinks he is ‘The One’ and ultra special and whom Jesse Jackson says should have a special section added to the bible and whom Spike Lee says will cause us to think of time ‘Before Obama and After Obama’.

So, given that Obama has not said he is but a man, like all other humans here, it gives one concern. He will have the ‘Red Phone’ and if he is too caught up in his own importance will he make the right decision. Simple enough…since no one seems willing to bring him down to earth and tell him its all looking a little ‘presumptuous’.

Just think about it:
The ‘O’ Plane
The ‘O’ Seal
The ‘O’ Flag and now the…
The ‘O’ Presidential Chair…hemmmm……

I am no psychologist but from a layman’s point, he sure thinks he is mighty ‘important’ or ‘predestined’ or ’smug’ all which are none-clinical terms. Happy now!

SusanUnPC: “I remain perplexed why someone would use such presumptuous symbolism, and does not have the common sense to realize that such symbols inevitably backfire.”

That’s easy. “The basis of optimism is sheer terror” - Oscar Wilde

Thus, behind aggressive overconfidence is a great fear. I think that Obama and his people feel VERY vulnerable, and they are overreacting to that vulnerability.

At base, I think the Obama crowd feels that they’re going to get aced out in the end.

(btw, there is good reason for this fear, because it’s happening - so they’ve got ONE thing right!!!)

Susan,

I’m not a psychoanalyst - but here is my brief take.

Empty inside - desperately needs outside adoration / gratification.
Empty inside - desperately needs outside symbols of power / superiority.

He is overtaken by very powerful negative, unconscious forces. He is essentially unfeeling, essentially without a conscience, essentially without capacity to love, and has no real sense of awe and meaning in a spiritual sense or deep human sense. His “will to power” as a result of those powerful forces precludes all the good stuff.

Because his consciousness (therefore his ego) is really undeveloped, he is very blind to what is self-evident to you, Susan. . He attempts to appeal to the dark forces buried deep within each of us, which robs us of our conscious individuality and robs us our “better angels.”

Because he is intelligent and cunning , he is very, very, dangerous

Comment by Andrew | 2008-08-04 22:11:00

Yeah, you get it. He doesn’t have a big ego, he has a tiny one that he stuffs into his pocket. He needs the adoration, he lives through others. This combination is very dangerous. Just think if he had to commit murder to be popular or he betrays the country to earn the approval of a dictator.

One of the more popular posts on this site has been the one asking whether Barack Obama might have Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Now we have a much more scholarly analysis — by Sam Vaknin, author of the book “Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited“. To properly represent the author’s analysis and allow AW readers to make up their own minds, the analysis is published here in its entirety. The article may be long, but is definitely a worthwhile read.

Two con men come to the king and tell him they will make him a suit of clothes from material that only the wise and those with knowledge can see.
Natural the king and all his adviser, the court and grown up subjects say how wonderful the suit of clothes looks on the king.
A little boy who is not politically correct sees the king in a parade and shouts ” the king is in the all together and has no clothes.

IANAP but I think that there is a wide spectrum of behavior that falls under the broad category of “sociopath”, including NPD..most of the descriptions are based on the “bad ones” that end up in prison or a psych hospital. IMO, Bush falls into the “bad” group but avoided penalties because of his family. Bush’s history of animal abuse, drugs, alcohol, behavior with executions as Gov., etc. I agree that Obama was really screwed up by his childhood, which is too bad, but he will be a dangerous President.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Diagnostic Features:

Narcissistic personality disorder is a condition characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance, need for admiration, extreme self-involvement, and lack of empathy for others. Individuals with this disorder are usually arrogantly self-assured and confident. They expect to be noticed as superior. Many highly successful individuals might be considered narcissistic. However, this disorder is only diagnosed when these behaviors become persistent and very disabling or distressing.

Complications:

Vulnerability in self-esteem makes individuals with this disorder very sensitive to criticism or defeat. Although they may not show it outwardly, criticism may haunt these individuals these individuals and may leave them feeling humiliated, degraded, hollow, and empty. They may react with disdain, rage, or defiant counterattack. Their social life is often impaired due to problems derived from entitlement, the need for admiration, and the relative disregard for the sensitivities of others. Though their excessive ambition and confidence may lead to high achievement; performance may be disrupted due to intolerance of criticism or defeat. Sometimes vocational functioning can be very low, reflecting an unwillingness to take a risk in competitive or other situations in which defeat is possible. Individuals with this disorder have special difficulties adjusting to growing old and losing their former ’superiority’.

Comorbidity:

In this disorder, sustained feelings of shame or humiliation and the attendant self-criticism may be associated with social withdrawal, depressed mood, and Dysthymic or Major Depressive Disorder. In contrast, sustained periods of grandiosity may be associated with a hypomanic mood. Anorexia Nervosa, Substance-Related Disorders (especially related to cocaine), and other Personality Disorders (especially Histrionic, Borderline, Antisocial, and Paranoid) frequently co-occur with this disorder.

Associated Laboratory Findings:

No laboratory test has been found to be diagnostic of this disorder.

Prevalence:

The prevalence of Narcissistic Personality Disorder is less than 1% of the general population. It is seen in 2% to 16% of psychiatric outpatients. This disorder is more frequent in males (50% to 75%) than females.

Course:

Narcissistic traits are very common in adolescents, but most adolescents grow out of this behavior. Unfortunately, for some, this narcissistic behavior persists and intensifies into adulthood; thus they become diagnosed with this disorder.

Comment by bemused | 2008-08-04 21:22:03

On another thread there was a question of whether this was treatable. Unanimously, no. Was just thinking about modern treatment for personality disorders, and realizing it’s hopeless. This is cognitive therapy, basically a learning approach. But in the case of anti-social people, the last thing you would want to do is teach them how other people think and why their actions are socially counterproductive. They would just use the knowledge to manipulate other people even more.

I think BO’s personal pain led him to his own little defense shelter when he was a child, every learning experience since has been turned to support his resentment, and he is good at finding other resentful people and convincing them he understands their pain–they infer he will do something about it.

Comment by elise | 2008-08-04 23:48:34

Would there be anger associated with this disorder? Obama shows contempt, in fact uses contempt in his campaign, but (non professional impression) there is barely controlled anger when he’s is challenged.

I believe he might have a Borderline Personality Disorder, possibly Histrionic.

He may have suffered abandonment, but many children do and far worse than him. At least he didn’t live with the man who could care less about having another child (if Barack Obama is the father). Lolo Soetoro was a heavy drinker and it isn’t pleasant to say the least to be around such a person, but there hasn’t been any reports of him abusing Barry.

In my opinion, Barry being raised in Indonesia where men count way more than women started his narcisstic attitude. Ms. Dunham may not have been able to handle his superior attitude (he probably was trying to rule the roost thinking he was better than his mother, who is just a woman).

Ms. Dunham brought him to Hawaii in 1971 (not sure what part of the year), but she moved back to Hawaii in 1972. Barry likes being catered to, did he just develop that after 40, doubt it.

So, living with his grandparents gave him the whole house and he didn’t have to listen to his mother or follow her rules nor listen to his baby sister or help take care of her. In Indonesia he would have been taught that that was women’s work.

Bet his grandparents let him do just about anything that he wanted to do.

As far as the whole plane thing, chair, presidential seal, etc. Barry, as he did no doubt as a child, will push it to the limits. The people who are catering to his whims have probably similar personalities or at least the same mental attitude of entitlement.

Oh well, there is my two cents worth.

Comment by elise | 2008-08-05 00:00:07

What is the truth about his grandparents? I have read his grandmother was VP of a Bank and that both she and his grandfather were very liberal. Mixed marriages weren’t as unusal at that time in Hawaii as, for example, in the southern US states. Whether or not the storey is true about food stamps, his grandparents cared enough to pay most of the very expensive tuition to a private school for seven years. What gives with his grandmother anyway? Is she ill? I don’t recall ever even seeing a picture of her and she is still living.

His staff is quiet and quiescent. He demands “No Drama” on his team, which means no dissent, no opinions. As Anne E. Kornblut reported yesterday:

Many of the fresh faces moved to Chicago within the past few weeks and are still looking for apartments and sitting at temporary desks.

All were given the “no drama” speech before they were hired. “There are a whole series of games candidates play,” said Dan Pfeiffer, an Obama veteran who was recently promoted to communications director. Obama, he said, “brooks none of that” and has “specifically sought out people who are going to play by those rules.”

This is classic cult technique: isolate them from their family (move them to Chicago.) Discourage dissent or self-expression (”no drama”.)
And

Plouffe is understated to the point of sometimes being difficult to hear when he speaks. In the early days of the race, the central figures were cut from similar cloth: Robert Gibbs, a former Kerry aide who went to work for Obama in the Senate; Pfeiffer; Burton, another Kerry graduate with experience at the Democratic Congressional Committee; Pete Rouse, who was an aide to then-Sen. Thomas A. Daschle (D-S.D.); Paul Tewes; and Steve Hildebrand. All were low-key staffers with the focus that comes with working for losing candidates.

And

Minutes later, Plouffe deferred to Pfeiffer when a reporter sought to stop him in the hallway for a few on-the-record quotes.

“Later? Please?” Pfeiffer pleaded apologetically, successfully deterring the interview.

Plouffe grinned. “This is why we’re effective,” he said.

Good news from Bill O’Reilly tonight - the NY Times, the LA Times, and Newsweek losing readers steadily, MSNBC losing viewers. Time picking up readers, also Fox picking up viewers. More and more Americans are just saying no deal to this biased media agenda, and I love it!

Comment by We Will Remember in November! | 2008-08-04 21:43:00

I wrote this comment a few weeks back on another blog. I was playing keyboard tag with a bunch of little wee obamabots…it was a very slow day. Anyway I think the first part of the comment echos what has been said upstream:

My overall belief is that Obama has serious issues with his father abandoning him (and rightly so). His grandparents took him in, raised him when first his father left him at 2 and his mother flew off to parts far and wide to pursue other men. YET (those caps again), he writes a book called “dreams of my father.” Huh. Oh wait, now he is praising his grandparents and his mid western up bringing. His father gets a whole book (which I understand is critically acclaimed and very well written) and his grandparents get a few lines to win an election AFTER (I just can’t help myself) getting thrown under the bus.

Second, Obama has associated himself with the most radical of people who suppport a radical racial agenda because he is trying to prove to his dead father that he is worthy despite the white blood that runs through his viens. Remember when Obama Sr’s parents heard about Sr and Obama’s mother wedding, Sr’s parents wrote they did not want white blood spoiling the Obama blood. Does Obama blame his white side for his father so easily being able to abandon him? This is why Obama stayed (and continues in my book) with Rev Wright, NOI, Louis Farranken, Pleger, Ayers…. He is proving that he was worth his fathers love. This is a tragic thing but it should not be played out using the American citizens as props.

Third, I believe Obama is running for president so he does not have to do any Sentorial duties. It sounds weird but I believe it is true. He appears to like all the glitter and spotlight but not the hard work. A community organizer… talking with folks to get them to do something…really hard work. Although being a community organizer is probably very stressfull, IF (I know I need help, do you know of a 12 step program?) you cared for the people you are helping organized. Obama’s law firm years or months, where are the work products? State senate, different circumstances same questioned, where is the work product? As I understand it once the ILL demo’s controlled the state senate, the once minority leader now the majority leader , Jones, HANDED (I give in to the urge, if it is wrong I don’t want to be right)Obama all the bills he “championed” and then passed. All those state senators who were harrassed and laughed at trying to pass those bills under state republican rule, were brushed to the side and denied their due because Majority leader Jones wanted to me himself “a United States Senator.”

Lastly, do I need to even address Obama’s hope and change crap (well by using the word crap I guess I addressed it). The only thing Obama changed was the democratic party. It is gone bye bye. When Obama loses the democratic party will cease to exist. Hope? Hope for public financing, the defeat of telecom immunity, the immediate withdrawal of our troops from Iraq regardless of what the “bush” generals say, banning of guns so the police can have a fighting chance against the escalating murders in most major cities? Hope my A$$$.

On June 25 I switched from a registerd democrat to an independent. No, longer will I believe that one party is better than the other. I am a critical thinker who votes what makes sense TO ME. I own my vote and from now on I am going to ACT LIKE IT.

McCain gained 20% and Obama lost 16% among voters ages 18-29. Obama still leads that group, 49%-38%.
Among women, McCain closed 10 points on Obama, who still leads by a 43%-38% margin.
Obama has lost what was an 11% lead among Independents. He and McCain are now tied.
Obama had some slippage among Democrats, dropping from 83% to 74%.
Obama’s support among single voters dropped by 19%, and he now leads McCain, 51%-37%.
Even with African-Americans and Hispanics, Obama shows smaller margins.

I think Independent voter’s comment has merit.

I think that Obama’s handlers are trying to project an image of him as being presidential so that the voting public will see him that way. Because he isn’t what we have typically thought of as president material. His name, his race, his inexperience, these are all qualities that work against him. So, to get us to see him as a possible president they present him to the public in as many presidential ways as they can. It’s acting “as if” something is already true, so that the possibility of it being true seems greater.

I agree that it is probably also for his own sake too, so that he will think of himself as presidential and believe it. He needs to do that to appear authentic.

For me, the problem I have with his candidacy isn’t with him persay, even though I have questions and concerns about his motives and ability to lead this country in a way I can have confidence in. My problem with his candidacy is that it is illegitimate and he is not the candidate that the American people chose to be the Democratic nominee for President. If we allow the Democratic Party to get away with this travesty of justice, they will believe they can choose whoever they want for a candidate in the future and we will not stop them.

For that reason and for the politics of sexism and misogyny that went unchecked during the primary season, I will not vote for the Democratic nominee for the first time in my adult life. And to insure that they get the message, loud and clear, that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated, I will vote for the Republican, to help insure his election and their loss. If they really care about winning a Presidential election in the future, hopefully this will have an impact on how they consider the will and the power of the voters.

Comment by jay | 2008-08-04 21:52:01

Basically, it is because Obama has a total lack of empathy. To his mind he is the only one that matters. To him, people are useful or not, mere objects.

The interesting thing about this is that, psychologically, most people with empathy are initially attracted because THEY can feel the positive aspects of the sociopath’s own feelings toward himself.

It explains how human monsters manage to attain power.

The forces behind him want to usher in the most liberal government we have ever had in the US. They have a serious agenda pointing to their fuzzy ideas of a revolution which is really destruction.

Comment by catdancer | 2008-08-05 06:29:04

No not Liberal, Fascist. The oligarchs of the New World Order(Soros, Ziggy B., Buffet et al) who are behind him want social security privatized, our American infrastructure privatized, our pathetic unions busted,a draft(need more soldiers in our never-ending, very profitable wars) and dissent silenced. We no longer have a free press. We have a corporate press whose mission is manipulation and infotainment. The media owners support Obama(Donald Graham of the WashPo & Newsweek is a Bilderberger, for example). Hey, give the rabble circuses and distractions. The Trilaterals and Bilderbergers (cripes read about them!) want more resource wars (Ziggy B. wants to destroy Russia to plunder its natural treasures)and, of course, vastly more power for themselves. Anyone see the movie, “V”?

Global wars, that benefit the few at the expense of tens of millions–blood and lives–cannot be won with civil disobedience and organized protest in a free society. Ergo, this pandering, corrupt Congress has given our horribly evolving Police State all the necessary tools and powers, including 600 detention centers(read: camps)to crush our Liberty(think: free-speech cages at Denver!).

Be very afraid people. We must defeat Bawak and the tiny elites supporting him. Hillary is a democrat and her own master. She wouldn’t be owned or controlled and that’s why they hate her!

To me, what all Obama has been doing is to create a new reality for HIM, to be just called president or king.

By repeating (yes we can, etc, to his supporters), visualizing (creating his own version of presidential seal or typing obama, president, etc), and vocalizing (obama supporters’ repetition of yes we can, change, etc), he truly believes that his dream will come true. I’m not sure he will get what he wants, he might get his lessons instead in the end.

I am reading Obama Nation by Corsi. In completing just the first two chapters it is very obvious that Barack Obama has serious issues due to his father. He has fabricated story after story about his father, mother, and their early life. This is not good news - this guy is not stable enough to be President.

He definitely has a narcisstic personality disorder. All of the seals, President on chair, plane logo are very serious signs of a mental disorder. This is not about his staff, this is all about Barack Obama unleashed.

“Obama Nation” by Jerome Corsi, mentioned in several comments here, is well worth buying. Read it then pass it on. It’s very much to the point … not filled with laborious text and terminology … it’s well-researched and is a fascinating read. Just when I thought I knew all I needed to know about Obama … I was very surprised. Obama simply is not suited to be POTUS. Not even close.

“I am genuinely interested in what professional psychoanalysts would have to say about all of this.”

I am as well since I think this is a real problem should Obama be elected. I don’t know how or why this media creation for Obama got started. But it is clear that the media and his campaign is propping him up as the greatest thing since sliced bread and it has all gone to his head.

Both Obama’s campaign and the media have done the country a disservice should Obama be elected. Obama has been conditioned to think he is something special and cannot handle criticism. If he gets any remotely tough questions he will walk away, get aggitated, or refuse to answer. This is dangerous concerning the president of the US since he has to make such important decisions and his mental stability is imperative.

If Obama gets angry at the media, Congress, other nations, etc. what will he do? His experience, judgment, leadership, values, character, knowledge, common sense, work ethic, commitment, and decision making are already flawed. If we now add his mental instability and ego we are asking for some major problems with this guy. Do we really want to put this country in disarray just to give some people a feel-good moment? No country should be willing to pay this kind of price for a feel-good moment — especially a country as important as the US is in the world.

Sam Vankin at audacitywatch reads Obama: “Talks about himself in the 3rd person singular or uses the regal “we” and craves to be the exclusive center of attention, even adulation.”

So when Obama says ‘we are the change we’ve been waiting for,’ he means ‘I am the change I’ve been waiting for.’

Profile of the Sociopath
This website summarizes some of the common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths.

Glibness and Superficial Charm

Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”

Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

Incapacity for Love

Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others’ feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet “gets by” by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others’ lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.

Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

——————————————————————————–

Other Related Qualities:

Contemptuous of those who seek to understand them
Does not perceive that anything is wrong with them
Authoritarian
Secretive
Paranoid
Only rarely in difficulty with the law, but seeks out situations where their tyrannical behavior will be tolerated, condoned, or admired
Conventional appearance
Goal of enslavement of their victim(s)
Exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim’s life
Has an emotional need to justify their crimes and therefore needs their victim’s affirmation (respect, gratitude and love)
Ultimate goal is the creation of a willing victim
Incapable of real human attachment to another
Unable to feel remorse or guilt
Extreme narcissism and grandiose
May state readily that their goal is to rule the world

I think BO is a weak stingy Oral character. His eyes give him away, he has weak, hollow eyes.

His weak mental energy is reflected in his physical body. He smokes, and he has a weak, unhealthy, underdeveloped physical body.

He has issues with nurturance, and obtaining nourishment from food. So he looks to substance abuse for quick fixes. He is tight-lipped and unhealthy looking. I am curious about his metabolism and purple lips.

I think he has issues with food, control, and controlling others. He has already expressed a bizarre desire to control the American peoples’ food intake as well as energy expenditure. This goes beyond the typical politician’s arrogant conceit of knowing better than anyone else.

Is it true he doesn’t celebrate Christmas? Does he really not own a pet, despite being quite wealthy? What kind of controlling stingy parent doesn’t have a pet in the home, at least for their children?? Pets give unconditional love and loyalty. What does it say about BO’s “caring heart” if he doesn’t own a dog or cat already, considering his wealth? I think it points to how controlling, humorless, cold, and stingy he is.

Underneath his arrogance is low self-esteem and fear that he cannot stand on his own. BO needs others to prop him up and feed his ego. He needs them to tell him he is so great.

When BO is feeling smugly superior, he delivers his arrogant, yet “eloquent” speeches that lack substance. Yet, watch what happens when he is challenged. He becomes whiny, sarcastic, and biting. I’m sure arguing with BO would leave one exhausted. He would suck all the energy out of those he spares with.

BO lost his verbal sparing matches with Hillary. So he became extremely spiteful and nasty, prompting him to act out in incredibly immature passive-aggressive nasty ways. He flipped her off! And “brushed her off” his shoulders.

I think BO has horrible social skills. When he is already comfortable with people, he does ok. But when interviewed by White people he doesn’t trust, he doesn’t make a lot of eye contact. He is so racist, he abandons Whites trying to connect with him right away. He thinks Whites are awful, so he rejects them before they can reject him, thereby assuring he will always be socially inept.

I think BO would be a travesty as president. Look how uncomfortable he is around people who aren’t busy adoring him. He cannot make conversation, he can only deliver speeches. He does not give and take, or establish a true repertoire with others.

Anyway, that is IMHO.

Yes, Vaknin’s a narcissist, but his book on narcissists is highly recommended by professionals in the field of psychology, psychiatry, and mental health counseling. They overwhelmingly credit him with completing one of the best works in the field on NPD. So, that said, here’s what he had to say about Obama’s “exercise” fetish. It’s a classic symptom:

In this paragraph, Vaknin highlights: [emphasis is mine]

An important distinction is between cerebral and somatic narcissists. The cerebrals derive their Narcissistic Supply from their intelligence or academic achievements and the somatics derive their Narcissistic Supply from their physique, exercise, physical or sexual prowess and romantic or physical “conquests”.

Obama’s “over exercising” and his penchant for sexual comments combined with his intentional flirtiness toward women, are classic symptoms of narcissists who need a constant “supply” of sexual conquest to feed their ego needs.

[just my cell phone buzzing in my pants].

I highly recommend reading Vaknin’s article. It’s a devastating analysis of Barack Obama.

I would go with Dependent Personality Disorder except that would require a romantic friend other than the spouse

Unfortunately, in my extended family (via marriage and adoptions)I’ve had prolonged contact with sociopathic and NPD types. IMO, BO definitely exhibits symptoms of both disorders. Would love to hear from others who have considered this possibility, a very scary one for the future of this country, should the chosen one be elected.

Yes, I have a close relative who has NPD. And I see a lot of similarities between him and Barack Obama. These illusions of grandiosity and the obsessive need to be popular. But underneath it all is very low self esteem and self loathing. People like that never seek help because they think everyone else is the problem. I think I read that in NPD, symptoms tend to manifest during early adulthood and continue throughout the person’s adult life. However, heading into old age, the illness tends to level off, doesn’t go away, but levels off a bit. If all that I’ve read is true, then Obama’s illness is in full swing right now.

Here’s another issue that I think ties in with his troubled childhood. I read some time ago a quote from Obama stating that one thing he regretted was not going to his mother’s bedside when she was dying of cancer. My mother died of the same kind of cancer and we had a very difficult relationship. I spent a lot of years being angry at her. But I went to her bedside when she was dying, and I will say that being present with someone when they’re dying, especially when you had a had relationship, is very healing. My question is, why didn’t Obama go to his mother’s bedside? Was it because he was angry at her for abandoning him as a child? To use too much work as an excuse for not going to see your mother when she’s dying is a crock. There’s some other reason he didn’t go, and my guess is it’s because he harbored some anger/hatred toward his mother for his childhood. Now that she’s gone, and he lost out on the chance to see her one more time, and possibly the chance to come to terms with everything that happened, he’s never going to get over his childhood.
