Bob Herbert: Why is everyone missing the phallic symbols in McCain’s Britney ad?
(As I wrote to some friends, perhaps the problem is that Bob Herbert is the only person in America who sees ANY phallic symbols in those ads.)
Herbert read a book’s worth of meaning into this single phrase by John McCain last spring: “Mr. McCain had himself touted as the ‘American president Americans have been waiting for’.”
There was nothing subtle about that attempt to position Senator Obama as the Other, a candidate who might technically be American but who remained in some sense foreign, not sufficiently patriotic and certainly not one of us — the “us” being the genuine red-white-and-blue Americans who the ad was aimed at.
That is heavy. Quite frankly, Herbert is near hysteria: “The racial fantasy factor in this presidential campaign is out of control.”
And could it be that there is a RELATIONSHIP between Mr. Obama’s falling poll numbers and his playing of the race card? The American people — even white people — are decent, good people who overwhelmingly abhore REAL cases of racism. But they also detest the race card being flapped about, especially when a candidate is cornered because of his inability to handle the job of being a presidential candidate, let alone being a president.
Then I read this self-pitying drivel by Mr. Herbert — despite the fact that it is Obama’s OWN campaign that has promoted him as a hip pop icon!
Mr. Obama has to endure these grotesque insults with a smile and heroic levels of equanimity. The reason he has to do this — the sole reason — is that he is black.
Mr. Herbert, you’re an able (albeit not great) essayist, but your hypersensitivity is getting the best of you.
By your standards, there is nothing we can say against Mr. Obama that cannot be construed by you as racist.
Why can’t YOU see what most of America sees? That it is Mr. Obama and his campaign who have turned him into a “pop icon.”
That it is HE who has replaced the American flag with his giant O on the tail of his campaign plane? (While we’re speaking of symbols, just what is that giant O a symbol of, Mr. Herbert?)
That it is HE who put the word “President” on his plush seat on his incredibly expensive campaign plane.
That it is HE who okayed the use of a faux presidential seal on his lecturn.
Yet you twist Mr. McCain’s correct satire of Mr. Obama’s own iconic campaign strategy into somehow being highly sexualized, featuring two white blonde women. No. That’s not it at all.
Speaking of icons, why don’t you take to task the vile, misogynistic “lyrics” of Ludacris and Snoop Dog, both of whom Obama admires and listens to?
But, then, those are only insulting to women, and they had better get used to it, right?

I agree strongly with comment. Based upon Sen Obama’s track record in Chicago style politics, his recent FISA vote I am very concerned that IF he wins in November- he (and his puppetmasters) will do everything possible to destroy any peaceful, democratic venues for public dissent on his policies or decisions. Sick as the thought is, there are many billionaires and billionaire wanna bees that would look forward to violence and physical (vs just ideological) revolutions INSIDE our country. When you destroy the middle class, eliminate freedom of speech and slowly strip away our constitutional rights…well…this is a recipe for violence in our society- kind of reminds one of what happened in the 60’s and 70’s here. The elimination of Peaceful dissension will breed violent outbursts and thoughts of physical revolutions . There are many citizens in this country who are very experienced in this from of physical versus ideological and cultural revolution-based upon their past actions-so- they wont be too worried to see this form of dissent rise up again. Now, they are just waiting for the right ‘issue’ to surface to cause domestic chaos so that we can revert to behaving like animals towards each other- and they can redistribute wealth and snatch political power be slowly and deliberately destroying our US constitution. I have never gotten calls from groups like this before, just mail and email requests for donations. Now they are calling. Are the numbers down? Probably because of the economy and probably because of these endorsements. NARAL also called me. I gave then the same headache. I will continue to do so and suggest they support Hillary Clinton.

I feel like the Obama camp is intentionally making this stuff up (even though it’s weird stuff) just to keep themselves in the news.
It does distract people from looking at issues and having real debates, which is a benefit to Obama.
Obama is the one who always puts that race card out there and the media makes him out to be the victim but I think that people are starting to catch on. In his own words they will bamboozle you just like he does.
Perhaps the reason obama’s poll numbers slip every time he plays the race card is because even his supporters realize that they could be labeled as “RACIST” if they say or do anything that obama and his minion don’t agree with. Maybe they are asking themselves, if he gets elected will we have the 21st century adaptation of McCarthyism?
Obama supporters are really, really reaching with this accusations. Phallic symbols? Moses a racist symbol? I’ve often read Herbert’s essays in the NY Times and for the most part, I’m aligned with his pov. He’s a good writer. But on this subject, he’s gone to the far side.
And I agree, there’s a frantic edge to the remarks. I think the Obama camp feels the shift in the public’s mood, which is reflected in the poll numbers. Obama manages to shine in the short run, but this over-exposure has been damaging. Voters are hearing more, seeing more and it ain’t pretty. All the slack Obama was given during the primaries is now catching up, and people aren’t willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Nor should we, not when the risks are so great.
As HRC noted earlier in the primary: running for POTUS isn’t a tea party.

The question I have is can any person back up the assertion that being brown skinned hurts Obama in any way, especially in Massachusetts. I can’t remember the exact number, but there were at least 10-20 times more people indicted and convicted under Ronald Reagan and Bush 41. Perhaps much more than that! Funny how the corporate media always portrays Clinton-Gore as corrupt, but Reagan-Bush as paragons of virtue.
Further, for working class whites, that whole $70 Million Ken Starr episode was nothing more than a rightwing political assassination attempt at a damn good President.

So you guys are basically saying that Zogby doesn’t do random sampling? If they use the same people over and over then their sampling technique is highly flawed and completely inaccurate. If all of these polling companies are using similar deceptive techniques then there really is no telling what the true numbers are. We all know that they use loaded or misleading questions and other techniques to derive their favored results; however, I always thought they did some sort of random sampling just to give their data more credibility.
What if all of their contributors were initially drawn from a very large, mechanically-chosen, random sample based upon an accurate sampling frame?
The odds of repeatedly using the same contributors in a population of 300 million would be damned near impossible. Each survey should be independent so to improve the power of their data they would need to generate a random sample every time. At least that is how I would approach the task. Unfortunately, these people do not really give a clear, detailed explanation of their methodology so we are really speculating here. To me it sounds like they have a defined list of contributors, they do a survey with those contributors and then derive their results. After their results are shown to be erroneous or not what they were looking for they go back and massage their contributor list so that they can correct the errors in the future or they can get their survey to fall more in line with what they actually want to find. Remember, somebody has to pay the bills and it isn’t about pure scientific research.

I agree that there is definite value to longitudinal surveys. I guess it depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your survey. I think they are very effective in many scientific studies where you study a phenomenon over time. I will have to do some research to figure out the efficacy of longitudinal polling though. I must admit that it is something that I am not completely comfortable discussing as my areas of study are science and education and I prefer experimental data to survey laden data but in education we do lots of surveys.
Zogby was way off from the others in primaries because he is affected. his brother Jim is the president of the Arab American Institute and he works for the Obama campaign. This is particularly insteresting because as of today, even Zogby can’t fudge how badly things are going.
What if McCain is actually leading by say a 55-45 margin or 57-43 margin nationally? What if in all the key battleground states McCain really has a huge lead? What is the effect of dishonest pollsters having on our electoral cycles?
Herbert and Obama have got to get a clue. Here’s the clue they got to get: the vast, vast majority of Americans do not care about the color of someone’s skin, when making a decision as to who would best serve them. Thirty five years ago my state of Massachusetts elected a black man US Senator, Edward Brooke, and the color of his skin was a total non-issue, but his political party was (Republican)in this Dem state. He still got elected several times, and became a force in Washington. Maybe that’s why the O-Man could only pull in 37 % of the AA vote in this state, we saw past his skin color to what a phony he is.

I mean, to think like that, you have to either be a real pig who thinks about phalluses all the time or you are a demented fool looking for anything to protect a candidate who isn’t worth the powder to blow himself up. I was going to blog it, but I couldn’t stop shaking my head at the absurdity of it all. One would wonder how it is that these sycophants grasp at straws and make up subliminal cuts that don’t even exist, but they have no problem with Ludacris avoiding the subliminal and going right for a paralyzed McCain in a wheelchair. Obama is yesterday’s fad. No amount of negative, or positive for that matter, campaigning by his camp is going to stop the bleeding.
Voters have had it with the race baiting and the used car salesman banter on his non-existent achievements. 16% of his adoring and none too worldly base of 18-29 years olds is already gone. If that many have stopped abusing the kool-aid what will it be 30 days from now?
What Obombout and Co. hasn’t figured out is that for the largest percentage of voters, skin tone is never an issue. But, experience, history, and dubious associations with people and marxism are what counts in this POTUS race.
Obama is simply one of those deals that voters are stepping away from and saying it’s not good enough or the mechanism that is Obama is defective. It’s just that simple.

Not to sound pompous here but Herbert is what we call a “pseudo-intellectual”. Take his use of the term “phallic symbol”. Rooted in a now-discredited Freudian theory of dream interpretation – anything longer than it is wide, and oriented more vertically than horizontally, could fit the bill. No need to limit yourself to towers (although Herbert does seem to have “seen” two towers that were not even in the ad – the Washington Monument and the Leaning Tower of Pisa) – a telephone pole in the background could suffice. Perhaps Herbert is transferring his need to see racism everywhere to “tower fixation”.
