HOT: McCain’s New Ad Hammers Obama’s Creation of a Cult Personality

Of note: At 1 p.m. ET, check out the new story on Obama’s problem in the energy debates.

While this blog does NOT endorse John McCain, we are — quite frankly — in awe of his latest strategies. We have written for months and months about our concerns that Obama’s campaign is entirely reliant on developing a “cult of personality,” which has nothing to do with governance and policy deliberations.

As one example, we are quite certain that, if quizzed, Barack Obama would be unable to name the ranks in the military branches. I’m very sure that the military, at all levels, is extremely concerned about this man’s readiness to be Commander in Chief. (A caller to DCMediaGirl’s great show last night made this clear: The caller is stationed at Ft. Bragg, has twice been to Iraq, and described the conversations among soldiers about Obama’s ignorance of the military as well as Obama’s failures to even SHOW UP to talk to the military.)

In one of the last debates, when the late Tim Russert asked both Barack and Hillary who the new head of Russia would be, Obama IMMEDIATELY turned his head to Hillary, hoping — no, expecting! — that she would answer. It is frightening that such a woefully ill-prepared person would even presume to run for the presidency. He needs to learn more before running for this most important office at this most critical time.

FROM THE McCAIN CAMP:

ARLINGTON, VA — U.S. Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign today released its latest television ad, entitled “Family.” The ad highlights Barack Obama’s support for higher taxes and increased government spending that will only put more burdens on America’s small businesses and cost jobs. While Barack Obama is the biggest celebrity in the world, that doesn’t do much to help American families who are hurting from higher gas prices and the threat of home foreclosure. John McCain has proposed an “all of the above” energy plan — the Lexington Project — to produce more energy here in America, invest in renewable energy, create jobs and achieve energy independence. The ad will air in key states.

Script For “FAMILY” (TV :30)

ANNCR: Is the biggest celebrity in the world ready to help your family?

The real Obama promises higher taxes, more government spending. So, fewer jobs.

Renewable energy to transform our economy, create jobs and energy independence, that’s John McCain.

JOHN MCCAIN: I’m John McCain and I approved this message.

AD FACTS: Script For “FAMILY” (TV :30)

ANNCR: Is the biggest celebrity in the world ready to help your family? The real Obama promises higher taxes, more government spending. So, fewer jobs.

· Barack Obama Has Called For Higher Income Taxes, Social Security Taxes, Capital Gains And Dividend Taxes, And Corporate Taxes, As Well As “Massive New Domestic Spending.” “Obama’s transformation, if you go by his campaign so far, would mean higher income taxes, higher Social Security taxes, higher investment taxes, higher corporate taxes, massive new domestic spending, and a healthcare plan that perhaps could be the next step to a full-scale, single-payer system. Is that what most Americans want, someone who will fulfill a Democratic policy wish list?” (James Pethokoukis, “Barack Hussein Reagan? Ronald Wilson Obama?” U.S. News & World Report’s “Capital Commerce” Blog, www.usnews.com, 2/12/08)

· Barack Obama Would Raise Social Security (Payroll) Taxes. “Obama’s proposal … would impose social security taxes on income above $250,000 per year. He would continue to exempt income between $102,000 and $250,000 from social security taxes.” (Teddy Davis, Sunlen Miller, and Gregory Wallace, “Obama Kisses Billions Goodbye,” ABC News’ “Political Radar” Blog, blogs.abcnews.com, 6/18/08)

· Barack Obama Would Raise Income Taxes. Obama: “[I] would roll back the Bush tax cuts for those making over $250,000.” (Sen. Barack Obama, CNN Democrat Presidential Candidate Debate, Manchester, NH, 6/3/07)

· Barack Obama Would Raise Capital Gains And Dividend Taxes. “Sen. Obama wants to raise the long-term capital-gains rate for families making more than $250,000 to around 20 percent or somewhat higher but not above the 28 percent level it reached during the Reagan presidency, an Obama economic adviser says. The same rate would apply to most dividend income for these investors.” (Tom Herman, “Tax Report Your Tax Bill: How McCain, Obama Differ,” The Associated Press, 6/18/08)

· Barack Obama Called For Tax Hikes On “Dirty Energy” Such As Coal And Natural Gas. Obama: “What we ought to tax is dirty energy, like coal and, to a lesser extent, natural gas.” (”Q&A With Sen. Barack Obama,” San Antonio Express-News, 2/19/08)

· In June 2008, The National Taxpayers Union Foundation Calculated That Barack Obama Would Increase Annual Federal Spending By $343.9 Billion. “NTUF’s third round of ‘costing out’ the candidates’ platforms since January 29 found that Clinton would increase yearly federal spending by $289.6 billion, compared to Sen. Obama’s (D-IL) $343.9 billion — both significantly higher totals from the last update on March 3.” (National Taxpayers Union Foundation, “As Presidential Campaign Pace Quickens, Candidates Race Ahead With Bigger Federal Budget Promises, Updated Study Shows,” Press Release, 6/3/08)

· In April 2008, The Washington Post Calculated Obama’s New Annual Spending At Close To $333 Billion. “By our calculations, using figures supplied by the campaigns, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) has proposed new spending and tax breaks that would amount to almost $265 billion a year when fully implemented, while the initiatives proposed by Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) total nearly $333 billion.” (Editorial, “Who’ll Cover The Checks?” The Washington Post, 4/25/08)

· Barack Obama Not “Even Trying” To Balance The Budget And “Frankly Says He’s Not Sure He’d Bring It Down At All In Four Years.” “Barack Obama says John McCain’s plan to balance the budget doesn’t add up. Easy for him to say: It’s not a goal he’s even trying to reach. Not only does Obama say he won’t eliminate the deficit in his first term, as McCain aims to do, he frankly says he’s not sure he’d bring it down at all in four years, considering his own spending plans.” (Nedra Pickler, “Analysis: Obama Won’t Try For McCain’s Budget Goal,” The Associated Press, 7/8/08)

· The New York Times’ David Brooks Said For Barack Obama To Fund His Domestic Programs, He Will Have To Break His Pledge Not To Tax The Middle Class. “Both [Obama and Clinton] promised to not raise taxes on those making less than $200,000 or $250,000 a year. They both just emasculated their domestic programs. Returning the rich to their Clinton-era tax rates will yield, at best, $40 billion a year in revenue. It’s impossible to fund a health care plan, let alone anything else, with that kind of money. The consequences are clear: if elected they will have to break their pledge, and thus destroy their credibility, or run a minimalist administration.” (David Brooks, Op-Ed, “No Whining About The Media,” The New York Times, 4/16/08)

ANNCR: Renewable energy to transform our economy, create jobs and energy independence, that’s John McCain. JOHN MCCAIN: I’m John McCain and I approved this message.

· John McCain Has Proposed A Comprehensive “All Of The Above” Energy Plan — The Lexington Project — To Achieve Energy Independence By 2025: http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/17671aa4-2fe8-4008-859f-0ef1468e96f4.htm

· John McCain Believes That The U.S. Must Become A Leader In A New International Green Economy. “Green jobs and green technology will be vital to our economic future. There is no reason that the U.S. should not be a leader in developing and deploying these new technologies.” (John McCain 2008, “John McCain’s Lexington Project,” Press Release, 6/25/08)

· John McCain Will Commit $2 Billion Annually To Advancing Clean Coal Technologies. “Coal produces the majority of our electricity today. Some believe that marketing viable clean coal technologies could be over 15 years away. John McCain believes that this is too long to wait, and we need to commit significant federal resources to the science, research and development that advance this critical technology. Once commercialized, the U.S. can then export these technologies to countries like China that are committed to using their coal — creating new American jobs and allowing the U.S. to play a greater role in the international green economy.” (John McCain 2008, “John McCain’s Lexington Project,” Press Release, 6/25/08)

· John McCain Will Put America On Track To Construct 45 New Nuclear Power Plants By 2030 With The Ultimate Goal Of Eventually Constructing 100 New Plants. “Nuclear power is a proven, zero-emission source of energy, and it is time we recommit to advancing our use of nuclear power. Currently, nuclear power produces 20% of our power, but the U.S. has not started construction on a new nuclear power plant in over 30 years. China, India and Russia have goals of building a combined total of over 100 new plants and we should be able to do the same. It is also critical that the U.S. be able to build the components for these plants and reactors within our country so that we are not dependent on foreign suppliers with long wait times to move forward with our nuclear plans.” (John McCain 2008, “John McCain’s Lexington Project,” Press Release, 6/25/08)

· John McCain Will Establish A Permanent Tax Credit Equal To 10 Percent Of Wages Spent On R&D. “This reform will simplify the tax code, reward activity in the U.S., and make us more competitive with other countries. A permanent credit will provide an incentive to innovate and remove uncertainty. At a time when our companies need to be more competitive, we need to provide a permanent incentive to innovate, and remove the uncertainty now hanging over businesses as they make R&D investment decisions.” (John McCain 2008, “John McCain’s Lexington Project,” Press Release, 6/25/08)

· John McCain Will Support Alternative, Low Carbon Fuels Such As Wind, Hydro And Solar Power. “According to the Department of Energy, wind could provide as much as one-fifth of electricity by 2030. The U.S. solar energy industry continued its double-digit annual growth rate in 2006. To develop these and other sources of renewable energy will require that we rationalize the current patchwork of temporary tax credits that provide commercial feasibility. John McCain believes in an even-handed system of tax credits that will remain in place until the market transforms sufficiently to the point where renewable energy no longer merits the taxpayers’ dollars.” (John McCain 2008, “John McCain’s Lexington Project,” Press Release, 6/25/08)

· USA Today: McCain’s Prize For A Better Battery Is “Smarter Than More Bureaucratic Approaches.” “$300 million battery prize. Obama derides this as a gimmick, but McCain’s idea for developing a radically better battery for powering a new generation of cars strikes us as smarter than more bureaucratic approaches. Like the X-Prize that helped propel the first civilian aircraft into space, a reward can leverage huge private investment. The idea would be better, though, if it focused on building radically more fuel-efficient cars regardless of the technology.” (Editorial, “Mccain + Obama = A Valid Energy Plan,” USA Today, 7/3/08)

Did anyone else see that the GOP is handing out Obama tire gauges.

Comment by NO for O | 2008-08-06 11:27:02

Yes. I thought that was brilliant. Every time someone pulls that baby out, the conversation begins once again. Hopey Changey.
Keep it coming O.
We couldn’t do this without you.

Comment by Rev. Wright, can you fix my garlic nose? | 2008-08-06 12:26:01

He really is giving the McCain campaign all the material it needs.

I wonder if Camp Obama has considered that taking money from the oil companies’ profits means also dipping into the pockets of many Americans’ via their 401Ks.

Comment by NO for O | 2008-08-06 13:28:15

Shhh! Don’t say it too loud. They will hear you and we will watch it on tomorrow’s MSNBC with head troll Keith O.

Comment by Dawnelle Leona del Puma | 2008-08-06 11:36:59

I could not even watch the ad the first time.

As soon as I hear that chanting I have to turn it off. It’s like when some smoker is huffing and puffing right outside the door to the place you eat and you JUST pass thru this cloud! It makes your arms flail and you gag and cough and just rush either IN or OUT to get through it!

THATS how I GET!! LOL

Comment by AF catfish | 2008-08-06 10:43:51

McCain’s ads are very entertaining, and they all have the “Obama, Obama” chanting in the background. A very effective theme. And the photos of Obama are of him laughing, as if it’s all a game to him (which it is!)

Comment by JoseyJ | 2008-08-06 11:40:08

Obama’s campaign theme: “What she said.”

Here’s an interesting article for those who may be interested:

Comment by educatedwhitewoman | 2008-08-06 11:09:59

Why isn’t the MSM all over this? From the article:

“That the Edwans [Hamas-supporting Palestinians]were able to contribute to Obama’s campaign from Gaza raises questions about the lax methods used by the presidential candidate’s website to vet online donations. The website donation form only asks each donor to affirm that he or she is a U.S. citizen above the age of 16. It requires no proof of citizenship status, such as a passport or social security number.

The form further requires the donor to affirm the contribution is not coming from a corporation, political action committee or lobby group. Wonder if Hamas qualifies.”

Comment by J.J. | 2008-08-06 11:31:56

McCain can not count on any help from the media in starting conversations about anything negative to “The One”. He has to make them issues himself. Then they will get covered, and only then.

Comment by Dawnelle Leona del Puma | 2008-08-06 11:39:50

Not until after the convention.

THEN the REPUBLICAN OWNED MSM will turn on BAMBI. SOME like Keith O will either commit suicide or get another job instead of commit blasphemy on “the ONE”

the rest will fall right in line

AGAIN the COUNTRY LOSES!!

Comment by DAB | 2008-08-06 12:01:17

Olbermann already lost his dear friend, Dana Milbank who wrote an unkind article about The One and annoyed Keithy so very, very much. Apparently only one opinion is allowed on that show.

Comment by DAB | 2008-08-06 11:58:50

He is being treated in a way similar to the way that Hillary was treated. Frankly I wasn’t real surprised that the MSM gave her a hard time, but I’m taken aback that their former close friend, John McCain is also being dissed left and right. Guess BO is just way too hard to resist. Yet somehow I am able to easily do so.

Comment by Deelee | 2008-08-06 12:01:10

That’s why he has so many bundlers working for him, to gather all the illegal contributions from a few rich middle-eaterners in the guise of small individual donors. I would bet that if anybody could dig deep enough, they would find contributions even from Al Queda or the Taliban.

“In one of the last debates, when the late Tim Russert asked both Barack and Hillary who the new head of Russia would be, Obama IMMEDIATELY turned his head to Hillary, hoping — no, expecting! — that she would answer.”

And what was her astute response? “Meh, uhm, Me-ned-vadah — whatever!”.

It’s kind of cute the way she said it in that clumsy, too-cool-for-school 8th grader sort of way.

And by the way, you should drop the pretense about No Quarter not endorsing John McCain. Even sites devoted exclusively to John McCain don’t lobby as vigorously on his behalf as you do.

Comment by roseeriter | 2008-08-06 10:56:19

We love NQ because its a Don’t LIKE OBAMA Site. Period. Bye bot.

Comment by Dawnelle Leona del Puma | 2008-08-06 11:41:23

I like NO QTR cuz it’s a PRO Hillary site!

Comment by J.J. | 2008-08-06 13:47:48

This is a Pro Hillary ‘08 site through the convention. Then it will become a Pro Hillary ‘12 site.

And, the only way to be Pro Hillary ‘12 is to work for the defeat of Obama in ‘08. I hope Larry Johnson will have No Quarter give a negative endorsement of Obama and urge a vote for McGrumpy as the only way to assure that defeat.

Comment by OBushMA! | 2008-08-06 10:56:21

Go away troll. That wasn’t her full response, that was after Russert asked his name, which she knew, but had a tough time pronouncing. Obama didn’t have a clue.

So, let me understand this. Your candidate did not know the answer; but you are gloating because Senator Clinton didn’t pronounce the correct answer as fluently as you would have liked?
That is an incredible argument, much like the many arguments Baracktrack makes to clarify his clarifications; kudos, koolaid drinker.

Comment by allimom99 | 2008-08-06 12:58:52

Kind of like scolding Americans for not speaking any foreign languages, while he himself speaks NONE (I have 4, not all fluent, so maybe I should be running for CIC).

Comment by Skiron | 2008-08-06 11:36:00

Great to hear that your vindictiveness against one man supercedes all of these:
-more pro-lifers on the Supreme Court
-more wars in the mideast
-more tax cuts for the wealthy and a higher tax burden for the middle class
-more corporate rape of the environment

which electing McCain will do for this country.

Comment by JoseyJ | 2008-08-06 11:44:25

I’ll vote for Obama – after he and Clyburn and JacksonIII admit race-baiting during the primary and FALSELY accusing the Clintons of racism.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-08-06 12:07:59

It is not vindictiveness…..I don’t want Obama to win, I want him to lose because he is UNQUALIFIED to be POTUS. He is a narsisstic empty suit. It’s not about Hillary, although was my choice because she is the best qualified. But you insist on bashing Hillary because your candidate is a know nothing fraud.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-08-06 12:28:14

The buck stops at his desk, FF. That was a great line from a former president. In this country, like it or not, the head of the organization is its representative and public face, and responsible for its direction. Obama couldn’t, wouldn’t, didn’t control his organization, which is the charitable explanation because we haven’t quite got him dead to rights yet on the origin of some of the vitriol. And as to your link, it is pretty trivial all right, but that is what your historic candidate has done with his historic candidacy, made it so there is no way to discuss anything without it being race-related.He has made English trivial, along with race.

The danger of thowing out this label at your opponent(s) at every criticsm (looks that way to a non supporter) is that your campaign and/or candidate will begin to look very foolish and childish. Crying “wolf” or “foul” now seems insincere. Particularly, when one’s campaign did nothing to disuade (and seemed to encourage) the misogyny directed at the party’s other “historic candidate”.

Sorry, but can’t feel your pain.

As far as race being injected, look to your own campaign. Obama was caught at the slick game last week, making reference to his race and trying [not so artfully] to accuse McCain of racist attacks. McCain came right back and called him on it. As he should, as he must.

By calling people racists at every turn and utterance, the Obama folks have cheapened the word and the damaging affect that true racism has on everyone. Obama cried “wolf” one time too many. And McCain would be a fool not to counterpunch. We all saw what happened to the Clintons in the primaries.

Obama needs a new script because this one’s getting plenty old.

I thought your candidate was supposedly post-racial? Guess not, eh?

The painful issue of racial discrimination and hatred has been addressed by thousands of people of good will and conscience, for decades now. These people are black, white, yellow, red, purple and green. These people have shed sweat, tears, and blood to undo the evils that occurred in the past. As a result, today we have a thriving and vibrant black middle class, and quite a few wealthy blacks as well. Positives images of blacks abound on TV and in the media, in professional sports and in news organizations, in prestigious universities and colleges, and in the government. Ever heard of someone named Condoleeza Rice? How about Colin Powell? We have outlawed discrimination and we have used affirmative action to get poor and ethnic minorities into jobs and colleges.

Yet Obama never talks about these positive gains or the people who made them. Oh a passing reference here and there, but no real credit. Obama was trained in Marxist “community organizing” techniques which explicitly REQUIRE you to convince people they are miserable. That’s what gets them all fired up to follow you — and to, BTW, give you lots of dough. This season he has managed to get quite a few people fired up about race and it worked like a charm in the primaries. But his cred is used up there. And so is yours.

Instead of whining about race, go work in a homeless shelter or building houses in New Orleans.

Peter Kirsanow is African American although he doesn’t like to harp about that point. He’s a Republican after all and those of us that aren’t white in the Republican Party don’t feel beholden to identity politics.

When it comes to racist behaviors, no one can top Democrats in their loathing of Republicans that are minorities. How many times did you stand up for Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, Condi Rice, or any other prominent black Republican? I would be hard pressed to find examples of righteous indignation by Democrats.

Freedom Fighter–before you go down that road, you need to educate yourself about the author and what he’s saying.

Comment by Freedom Fighter | 2008-08-06 11:42:40

Republican African Americans consistently work against the interests of the African American community. Handkerchief heads like Ward Connerly have for decades tried to dismantle Affirmative Action. The African American community correctly identify these Uncle Toms as not really black.

Comment by Uña de Gato | 2008-08-06 11:56:40

Wow, I did not you you drained your body of melanin because of a political affiliation. Maybe people like Ward Connerly don’t appreciate being told they can’t be successful unless they are given handouts and set-asides.

Comment by RepublicanChick | 2008-08-06 12:00:23

We want more for Americans of all nationalities, creed, and race. Don’t pass laws or enforce legislation that discriminates against whites to further advance minorities.

Ward Connerly discusses on a frequent basis what Affirmative Action has done to this country. In a country where we continue to yell NO DISCRIMINATION, we created laws that does the very thing we yell against.

What are the interests of the African American community for which you proudly speak up for?

If we look at the black leaders, they’ve been there for decades and blacks have seen how much change?

When you learn to think beyond your skin color and the victimization of your ancestors, then we’ll truly get somewhere. Until then, blacks will vote overwhelming for the one man that won’t require blacks to be more.

And quite frankly, they will turn their backs on two people that generally loved blacks–Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Those black supporters of Bill and Hillary Clinton are courageous to go against the grain. It is probably the first time in their political lives they’ll be on the opposite side of many of their friends and relatives. These are the exact Democrats that I’m proud to align myself with personally. They obviously want more for themselves and this country.

Comment by Heather | 2008-08-06 12:01:10

Oh please, “uncle Tom” is a term straight out of the 1960s. Do you really think nothing has changed since then? You need to get out more.

But if you insist on using the term, then you might consider applying it to “the One”. He’s the guy who did exactly nothing for the poor black people living in Tony Rezko housing, after securing Rezko millions in federal housing money through his Senate connections. This in the 1990s when African-Americans were basically taking over Atlanta, making it a better place as a result, Hollywood (making it a better place as a result), professional sports (making them better), the news media. I mean, the list goes on and you are still using the term “uncle Tom”? I just want a little sense of your mental landscape on this issue of Tomism. Ok so here’s a list. Please label as Tom or not-Tom.

Cory Booker (mayor of Newark NJ)
Oprah Winfrey
Andrew Young
Barry Bonds

Yes, the tire gauges have “Obama’s Energy Plan” written on each one. Humor works as does this current line of attack. Do we really want an American Idol contestant in the Oval Office? How much is celebrity status worth when the risks are so high? And do we want a man who has demonstrated a lack of respect and knowledge of our military to be Commander-in-Chief.

My answer? No.

I read an incredible post yesterday talking about Obama and his supporters [by a supporter]. The post talked about how nationalism and patriotism are passe, the heart-speak of a passing generation, how we are entering a New World paradigm and Barack Obama is the symbol and representative of that inevitable shift.

My answer? No. Not for me or my children.

This sounds creepily like Donna Brazilla’s comment about the “New Democratic Party,” composed of intelligent, urbane, sophisticated voters.

That leaves a lot of people out of the Party of Inclusion.

McCain is on the right track. And frankly, I’m cheering him from the peanut gallery [which surprises me everyday since I've never voted Republican in my life]

We have been encouraged to conserve since the 70’s oil embargo. In fact, Americans will gladly do their part, when asked.
Fl. has been extremely dry for the last few years. Residents have willingly conserved water and have had mandatory water restrictions imposed, as well. During the summer, there is high demand for electricity because of the heat (air conditioning). We conserve by setting thermostats higher, keeping our homes well insulated, allow FPL to install minders on our hot water heaters so that they can briefly turn them off during the day, etc. In other words, all the little things individuals can do to conserve.
Our efforts have been rewarded, but not with lower bills. In fact, we have recently been informed that because of the lowered demand, we will now pay a surcharge based on how little we use. Apparently, the Water and Power companies are not making enough money, so we have to subsidize their losses.
The point is that these seemingly simple solutions have already been put into practice. It is not enough. To put conservation as a priorty of a national Energy Policy is simplistic.
So, in answer to your question-Yes, I do think it’s a good idea to “mock” individual conservation as a solution. Been there, done that.

McCain has finally figured it out…great ads, sense of humor…I’m impressed. as far as the “trivialization” of race, you can blame Obama for that. I am still rooting for Hillary, but if the unspeakable happens and Obama gets the nomination, then I will be doing everything in my power to defeat Obama andthat includes voting for McCain.

Comment by DAB | 2008-08-06 12:14:59

McCain has been able to do what Hillary was not allowed to do because she is a Democrat — expose BO for what he is. The ads are resonating only because they strike a chord with a wide swath of the electorate. It’s like when SNL showed that BO was getting preferential treatment from the MSM. Many had suspected as much, the skits just solidified their views and gave momentum to their anger.

Comment by WIldChild | 2008-08-06 13:30:04

You sure hit that one out of the park. Not only could Hillary not expose BOBO, she couldn’t even talk about her own strength’s without the BOBOweenies going absolutely batshit crazy because she didn’t make it perfectly clear that BOBO also was strong in those areas. Which she never did, LOL because it wasn’t her job to sell BOBO. They perceived any discussion of Hillary’s strengths by Hillary as an attack on BOBO. I’ve never seen that before in a political race. No candidate was ever expected to campaign for the other candidate that way until the rabid little BOBOweenies came along and slathered us all over with the stuff bubbling up from their bottomless pit of emotional paranoia.

Pat Goss is the Washington Post’s auto expert. This was my understanding — tuneups in the old sense of the word are not performed anymore. Is Obama that out of touch?

Tune up?: What constitutes a tune up? The mileage experts keep telling us to inflate our tires and get a tune up, but what, to you, would define a tune up?

Pat Goss: There is no such thing as a tune up these days. What it really means is finding the fix for a specific performance problem not an old fashioned laundry list of generic parts and services. That usually means nothing except an empty wallet at the end of the day.

Comment by The Real Hope | 2008-08-06 11:47:20

Then why is the term “tune-up” used at various auto shops? Why is it used in contemporary conversation?
My friends, relatives and general acquaintances very frequently use the term “tune-up” when discussing car repair and upkeep and we all drive late model cars and are not part of the Flintstone generation.

With these two assholes running for president we won’t be driving any cars let alone discuss “tune-ups” if either of them get in the White House.

Comment by basil | 2008-08-06 13:28:36

Not only are tune-ups no longer done (since the late ’80’s) but over-inflating tires can cause MAJOR problems, like blow-outs, hydro-planing, etc.

Any fool (and i would be one if i tried to correctly read a frigging tire gauge) who inflates their tires to the maximum listed is in real danger of having an accident.

oh, and BTW, tire manufacturing includes petroleum products. And with all the exploding tires caused from over-inflated tires there will be an even bigger need for oil to make new tires to replace the ones destroyed from Waffles tire-inflation campaign.

The mocking of Obama is the perfect tac by McCain. Arrogance is completely taken off its game by mocking and ridicule – especially because the ridicule is so well-deserved, which it always is in the case of “The One.”

Arrogance has no sense of humor about itself (and its “sense of humor” about others is ALWAYS nasty and cruel) – all arrogance can see is its own “grandeur” and “magnificence.” So, McCain’s (and anyone’s for that matter) mocking of “The Messiah” must be nothing short of heresy.

The American electorate is LOVING McCain’s ads – LOVING! As they say in the tabloids, America loves to build ‘em up, then tear ‘em down. Well, bots, your guy’s been built up – and the tearing down part is gonna be SO WONDERFULLY PAINFUL for you idiots.

I guess I’ve been mocking Obama for months now and this ad is quite innocuous compared to my sentiments.
I’d like to see them get more virulent with their attacks and get past the sneering.

Comment by Dawnelle Leona del Puma | 2008-08-06 11:59:42

I think the ones that have already given up on Hillary are now ready for the McCain/Bambi show.

I think those of us that still are fighting for her tooth and UNA (fingernail) are not there yet.

And hope to not EVER be there.

HILLARY DON’T MAKE ME HAVE TO PLUG MY NOSE & VOTE FOR SOMEONE I DO NOT WANT

PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE!

Comment by DAB | 2008-08-06 12:21:28

As much as I would love to see Hillary run, we have to be realistic because if somehow she wrested the nomination from Obama, she would be reviled by the other half of the party. Its better for Hillary in the long run if he loses the GE of his own accord. I sympathize with you, but at this point — ain’t gonna happen barring some extraordinary shocking event or revelation.

We could do worse than McCain — of all the Republicans he is the least noxious.

Comment by Uña de Gato | 2008-08-06 12:01:21

Obama is such a lightweight (read skinny=racist) that all it takes is a sneer and a sneeze to blow him away. Why waste the good stuff now? After the AT&T Convention, I have no doubt the heavy blows will come fast and furious.

Comment by Dawnelle Leona del Puma | 2008-08-06 12:20:00

LOL @ At&t

you are a comedian by night yes?

Comment by Firefly | 2008-08-06 12:35:34

I’ve been mocking bambi for months too – and yes, McCain’s ads are sooooo tame by our standards.

But the republicans haven’t even started yet – and the mocking has begun – soft, for now – kick-ass later – this is just a teaser.

Still, the American public is loving it – they know the avalanche is coming and are waiting with enthusiasm.

And no, I HAVE NOT GIVEN UP ON HILLARY – I, too, am fighting tooth and fingernail for her – and I expect her to be our nominee – seriously.

In the meantime, until the convention, I’m so happy to see McCain contributing even a little bit to barry’s demise. At least his stuff gets in the media and into the public consciousness. Barky’s poll numbers are dropping and I’m lovin’ watching the bots sweat…

PUMA!

Well McCain wasn’t my first choice, Hillary was. But through a fraudulent primary and Pelosi and DNC, it was handed or is being handed to Obama. I could care less if his skin is black. I am a better person than that. I look at a candidate’s qualifications, Obama has none. He associates himself with the most despicable, America hating lot I am ever seen. I don’t even think he is a U.S. citizen. The media glorifies him like he is some type of God. Totally blasphemy. I will never vote for him in any election on any ticket ever. I would hope he would go back to his home country and never come back to the U.S. He can take his supporters with him.

Comment by The Real Hope | 2008-08-06 11:56:09

I saw a video of Pelosi and Obama arm in arm yesterday. It was nauseating. The two of them are just majestic bitches planning the destruction of America all for their own maniacal and hidden purposes.

Comment by Dawnelle Leona del Puma | 2008-08-06 12:07:11

Pelosi is a far left pacifist LOON but certainly not maniacal. I save that description for the Bush Administration.

Bambi on the other hand is NOT FIT to SERVE on any NUMBER of counts.

Thus he will NOT serve.

simple

Bush may have sucked bad but in the front of his election he had managed to keep the lights on in Texas and serve a MINIMAL time being lazy in the Guard which made him appear to be equip (barely) plus he made such nice promises that you all (who ever voted for him) lapped it up like milk.

Anyway, and look how terrible he turned out? Can you even IMAGINE how BAD BAMBI WILL SUCK? Holy Mother of GOD! Well, it just will never happen. Not Logical Will Robinson.

“tune up”–

changing your spark plugs, distributor/rotor, air filter, fuel filter, oil, oil filter, checking fluids, and CHECKING TIRE PRESSURE!

This is something that everyone but rich republicans and fake liberals–that spend time accusing other real democrats of “elitism”–knows.

I guess if you’re a moron you think handing out tire gauges is funny and a good campaign tactic–about as funny as handing out band-aids that mock purple heart medals.

But, if you’re not a dumbass, you know that inflated tires are worth a few MPG and also leads to better handling and longer wear.

I note also that McCain is now saying that making sure your tires are fully inflated is a good idea.

Comment by Uña de Gato | 2008-08-06 12:04:01

It still won’t solve the energy problem, lard-for-brains! Obama’s next energy solution: go fly a kite!

Comment by Heather | 2008-08-06 12:09:12

Actually this is something known best by the hicks of the hills (TN and WV which both went for Hillary) and the “bitter white folks” of PA (which also went for Hillary). They’re the only folks still driving cars old enough to need a tune up. So don’t be talking down to us bitter hicks ok? I know how to change a spark plug and set my dwell timing, and I support HILLARY.

Obama’s tire gauge suggestion had about 1/10 the ‘gravitas’ of Paris Hilton’s recent proposal on energy. Realizing it after the fact, as Obama does with so many of his own pronouncements, he was forced to veer wildly to the right and embrace offshore drilling. Of course, that lost him a huge contingent of folks who were clinging to that one thing as a reason to vote for him.

Obama is an opportunist who will do anything to get elected. McCain is simply pointing that out.

You didn’t add the rest of his comment which goes something like, “but I wouldn’t recommend tire-inflation as an energy-saving tactic.

Funny thing. the media didn’t report that line, either. wonder why?

BTW, you forgot to mention:

Not only are tune-ups no longer done (since the late ’80’s) but over-inflating tires can cause MAJOR problems, like blow-outs, hydro-planing, etc.

Any fool (and i would be one if i tried to correctly read a frigging tire gauge) who inflates their tires to the maximum listed is in real danger of having an accident.

oh, and BTW, tire manufacturing includes petroleum products. And with all the exploding tires caused from over-inflated tires there will be an even bigger need for oil to make new tires to replace the ones destroyed from Waffles tire-inflation campaign.

Comment by beebop | 2008-08-06 13:43:04

Not to mention that there is a different recommendation for tires in the winter time …

Comment by basil | 2008-08-06 14:04:56

Or the fact that most tire gauges are inaccurate.

Poor Rush. His is the only channel i get in my properly-tire-inflated car and while driving and listening i thought his head was gonna explode at having to semi-seriously discuss the complete and absolute absurdity of tire-inflation as an energy-saving solution.

I’ll bet Nancy ’save-the-planet’ Pelosi thinks Waffles is a genius.

hehehehe

Trucker friends usually go just below max on their personal ride. Better traction and acceleration.

Closer to full on the back wheels for front wheel drives. The tires up front do the real hauling.

I can’t wait! We will probably be able to get the new Obama color at the local Hollywood Hills tanning salon. Comment by Dan | 2008-08-06 13:34:31

It is really strange – there is lots of “poor little” and (of all things) “sweetie” in responses I get on this site. I think this reflects a pervasive attitude that Obama supporters are 1) 20 years old and 2) naive. The reality is that I am over 40 and an attorney who put himself through school and has followed politics since I could pick up a newspaper. Y’all may want to reconsider your perceptions.

Comment by Dan | 2008-08-06 14:02:29

Good lord. Why do you think I included the parenthetical “(of all things)” in my post? It is exactly because of my awareness of the issue around Obama’s usage of it and the irony that an anti-Obama poster would use it themselves. One would think I wouldn’t have to explain these things…..

I don’t know about you but if I am not mistaken his positions aren’t that much different than Bush’s. And on top of that he is just as unqualified for the office as Bush. They both have the same type of educational background, Bush got into college through the legacy system and Obama through affirmative action. In both cases less than qualified people are admitted. But as guess people like Dan know more than everyone else and can feel the love of Obama for them.

Your problem Dan and the rest of the Obama cultist is you are too lazy and stupid to do the work of finding out where you candidate really stands. Obama is nothing more than a corporatist candidate foisted upon a gullible public more interested in a glamorous celebrity candidate with no substance.
DAN your mommy may think you are so clever but we here know that of all the democratic candidates in the primary cycle Obama was the biggest empty suit amoung them but stupid people like you fell for his bullshit and look what were left with. There is a sense of this kind out there, but he’d do better to remain focused on the issues, there’s several items he’s been consistent on where Obama flopped to his side.

It shows that one will say what he believes and the other will say anything.

Straight talk is straight talk.

There might be items that could be said about in reverse regard also. Both campaigns should highlight these for their ends.

Hmm…

I like Obama’s plan for imposing FICA taxes on incomes $250,000 a year and up, while leaving lower-income workers’ taxes alone. It would solve the shortfall problem.

I have absolutely no problem with his plan to roll back the Bush tax cuts on incomes $250,000 and above. The Bush tax cuts have been heavily weighted in favor of the rich all along–especially the very rich–while giving the middle 20% slightly over $500 a year in tax breaks, and working families in the lower 40% virtually nothing. Obama plans to increase tax cuts to the lowest 60% of working families.

I similarly approve of increased capital gains taxes on those having incomes of $250,000 up. Why should the rates be lower on money earned from investments than on money earned from actually working? Again, this wouldn’t affect the lower 60% of working families–numerically the great majority of the American people. It would mostly affect the very wealthy.

Consider that the bottom 40% of American families own less than 0.2% of the total national wealth, while the richest 20% own over 85% of the total. Break the top end down even further: The richest 1% in America own 34.3% of everything; the richest 10% of families own 71% of everything.

They can certainly afford to pay more without damaging life-styles most of us would consider absurd. They shouldn’t be getting the lion’s share of the tax cuts. Lest you think raising their taxes is “punishing the rich”, remember that their wealth is based entirely upon the productive efforts of all those below them. Wealth is created down here and rises from the bottom up to concentrate at the top. It doesn’t spring into being at the top and trickle down to the rest of us. Trickle down theory is total elitist bullshit.

If you want a healthy economy, you reward those who actually create and produce wealth for their efforts. You don’t rob them blind to pander to those who figure out non-productive ways to divert, concentrate, and accumulate. When the wealthy pay taxes, they’re paying their dues for the right to profit from the game. They morally owe those taxes, that are used to keep the system they profit from rolling along and healthy.

I don’t really know what to say about fiscal responsibility criticism when it comes from the very guys who have run up the biggest tab in the history of the nation, and have basically squandered the money they got their hands on by doing it.

Much of Obama’s spending would go into things that would have actual returns: education, infrastructure, social programs, alternative energy incentives, etc. The things the republicans have long neglected in favor of tax cuts to the wealthy, war and military spending, corporate welfare, etc.

You should take a close look at John McCain’s “plan to balance the budget”. It turns illogical even before you get to the point of scratching your head over the simple arithmetic: “The McCain administration would reserve all savings from victory in the Iraq and Afghanistan operations in the fight against Islamic extremists for reducing the deficit. Since all their costs were financed with deficit spending, all their savings must go to deficit reduction.”

Say what?

As far as FICA goes there is no problem. The problem is because of the raid of the trust fund to fund other programs. The real crisis is in medicare and he does not address that. His chief economic adivisor on SS is on record as supporting the Bush plan or some like it for the partial privatization of SS. His chief adviser on health care issues has been on record in favor of rationing of health care. His chief economic advisor is a disciple and former colleague of Milton Friedman ,the architect of Reagonomics. As far as saving money from ending the Iraq War that is bogus on 2 counts. First the amount of equipment that has to be replaced and the number of National Guard and reserves that have to be reequiped will be staggering and will continue costing the country another 20 years. Secondly the money for the war has been borrowed so Obama in reality has no intention of balancing the budget.
Obama has called for the reduction in NASA spending however NASA has a history of large return on investment. The defense department with there spending is the largest employer of engineers and scientist in the country so if there is a cut in that budget we will not need the educated people Obama tells us we need.
Dan and I know this is you because you asked for talking points from Obama central we are in for a serious time and we require form our leaders resolve, courage, intelligence, honor, and integrity. Obama fails on all these counts and unfortunately the candidate that had those attributes was slimed by a corporate back candidate who make race the center piece of his candidacy. These are serious times and we need serious candidates like Hillary not someone who see himself as the second coming of Paris Hilton.
Now Dan or Jamer or what ever you are calling yourself leave the world to the grown ups and go have your mommy make you some milk and cookies.

What makes McCain so sure that any government spending means LESS JOBS? Not true. It’s the taxpayers/citizen’s money and we want priorities set by the people for the people. If the Republicans had their way, there would be no security and we’d depend on Opra’s Charity Show.

Canada has had UNIVERSAL HEALTH Care Act since 1965–thanks to a Third Party (not Puma, the NDP) that was there to threaten one of the two major parties in a minority power position. That’s how thinkgs are done for the people. By a government that doesn’t care really, but is pushed by a THIRD PARTY to get off its butt and start caring for the people whose money it uses!

McCain is wrong. Prudent, wise government spending is a “must” if good far-sighted policies are to be implemented!

But I must hand it to the old-timer, he has earned my respect for voting with HIllary against the Bush-Cheney Energy Bill the Obambi voted for! This 2005 bill takes power away from Communities and they can’t sue if hteir water is contaminated and the wilfdlife destroyed. Read the U.S. PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) Report and you won’t believe what Obamam had the nerve to do and vote for these 2 warmongers who profit from the blood of the Iraqi 4 million refugees….Shame on Bush-Cheney and Barack!

See if you recognize who said this…

“I have no doubt that Sen. Hillary Clinton will make a good President”—-Sen. John McCain to Tim Russert in Bagdad (with HIllary) 2005.
