Canada has had UNIVERSAL HEALTH Care Act since 1965–thanks to a Third Party (not Puma, the NDP) that was there to threaten one of the two major parties in a minority power position. I like Obama’s plan for imposing FICA taxes on incomes $250,000 a year and up, while leaving lower-income workers’ taxes alone. It would solve the shortfall problem.

I have absolutely no problem with his plan to roll back the Bush tax cuts on incomes $250,000 and above. The Bush tax cuts have been heavily weighted in favor of the rich all along–especially the very rich–while giving the middle 20% slightly over $500 a year in tax breaks, and working families in the lower 40% virtually nothing. Obama plans to increase tax cuts to the lowest 60% of working families.

I similarly approve of increased capital gains taxes on those having incomes of $250,000 up. Why should the rates be lower on money earned from investments than on money earned from actually working? Again, this wouldn’t affect the lower 60% of working families–numerically the great majority of the American people. It would mostly affect the very wealthy.

Consider that the bottom 40% of American families own less than 0.2% of the total national wealth, while the richest 20% own over 85% of the total. Break the top end down even further: The richest 1% in America own 34.3% of everything; the richest 10% of families own 71% of everything.

They can certainly afford to pay more without damaging life-styles most of us would consider absurd. They shouldn’t be getting the lion’s share of the tax cuts. Lest you think raising their taxes is “punishing the rich”, remember that their wealth is based entirely upon the productive efforts of all those below them. Wealth is created down here and rises from the bottom up to concentrate at the top. It doesn’t spring into being at the top and trickle down to the rest of us. Trickle down theory is total elitist bullshit.

If you want a healthy economy, you reward those who actually create and produce wealth for their efforts. You don’t rob them blind to pander to those who figure out non-productive ways to divert, concentrate, and accumulate. When the wealthy pay taxes, they’re paying their dues for the right to profit from the game. They morally owe those taxes, that are used to keep the system they profit from rolling along and healthy.

I don’t really know what to say about fiscal responsibility criticism when it comes from the very guys who have run up the biggest tab in the history of the nation, and have basically squandered the money they got their hands on by doing it.

Much of Obama’s spending would go into things that would have actual returns: education, infrastructure, social programs, alternative energy incentives, etc. The things the republicans have long neglected in favor of tax cuts to the wealthy, war and military spending, corporate welfare, etc.

You should take a close look at John McCain’s “plan to balance the budget”. It turns illogical even before you get to the point of scratching your head over the simple arithmetic: “The McCain administration would reserve all savings from victory in the Iraq and Afghanistan operations in the fight against Islamic extremists for reducing the deficit. Since all their costs were financed with deficit spending, all their savings must go to deficit reduction.”
