Obama versus the Press

Since when did Barack Obama become the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland? When it comes to dealing with pesky reporters asking tough questions we see an emerging pattern–No Questioner Goes Unpunished. Barack might as well be screaming, “off with their heads.”

Notice anything missing in the list of moderators chosen for the upcoming presidential debates? Each campaign had a veto. And they agreed on three debates and three moderators: Jim Lehrer of PBC, Tom Brokaw of NBC and Bob Schieffer of CBS.

Who’s not here? You guessed correctly if you said: ABC. McCain has no motive to exclude ABC. What about Obama? What would his motive be? Is there a pattern of Obama shutting out news organizations and correspondents who have raised inconvenient questions or reported facts he wishes were not dug up?

On Obama’s foreign trip, his campaign excluded The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza, unable to find him a seat, after he wrote a lengthy factual account of Obama’s story in Chicago that depicted a young man in a hurry, willing to ride roughshod over even those helping him up the ladder, ambitious to a fault, never staying in a job long enough to accomplish anything.

Then, Keith Olbermann, host of “Countdown” on MSNBC, the chief Obama cheerleading section, in effect fired Dana Milbank from his show. Milbank, a columnist for the Washington Post, and a regular on Olbermann’s program for four years, had committed the unpardonable sin of criticizing Obama as “presumptuous” and citing some of his arrogant statements. For suddenly breaking with the pack, Milbank was removed.

About Milbank’s purge, questions hang in the air. Did Olbermann act entirely on his own in firing him? Or did he discuss the move beforehand with members of the Obama campaign?

Now, ABC finds itself excluded. The reason why isn’t hard to figure out. Just go back to the debate in Pennsylvania between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton moderated by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos and Charles Gibson. Stephanopolous asked Obama a question he never wanted raised.

STEPHANOPOULOS: A gentleman named William Ayers. He was part of the Weather Underground in the 1970s. They bombed the Pentagon, the Capitol, and other buildings. He’s never apologized for that. And, in fact, on 9/11, he was quoted in the New York Times saying, “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.” An early organizing meeting for your State Senate campaign was held at his house and your campaign has said you are “friendly.” Can you explain that relationship for the voters and explain to Democrats why it won’t be a problem?

OBAMA: George, but this is an example of what I’m talking about. This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who’s a professor of English in Chicago who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis. And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was eight years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn’t make much sense, George.

Obama’s reply, as Steve Diamond has made clear in a series of articles in No Quarter, was a series of falsehoods and distortions. Ayers, the domestic terrorist, had been more than a political funder of Obama’s ambition. He had served with him for years on a private foundation, the Woods Fund, giving money to mutual political allies, like the radical Palestinian group created by close Obama friend, Rashid Khalidi.

And Ayers had been instrumental as co-founder of the Annenberg Challenge in Chicago, a private fund intended to reform public education in the city, in having Obama named as its head.

This was Obama’s first big break, his first big responsibility, at which, by the way, he failed miserably. And it’s something he never likes to mention or to draw attention to Ayers as one of his early mentors. Obama also knows very well that Ayers is a professor of education, not English, having praised his book on reducing sentences for violent youth criminals in a review in the Chicago Tribune. Obama was not then eight years old.

Now we begin to see a pattern of Obama’s thin-skinned responses to media criticism. Obama will cut out any news group or reporter for being so impertinent as to raise factual questions about his past or current record. Anything less than cultish worship will be treat as an enemy attack. Obama’s enemies list will undoubtedly grow. For now it’s Lizza, Milbank and Stephanopoulos from The New Yorker, The Washington Post and ABC. Who’s next?

Obama as JFK? With his enemies list, he’s more like Nixon.

Voters’ Trust for McCain on Key Issues Growing
John McCain is now trusted more than Barack Obama on nine out of 14 electoral issues tracked by Rasmussen Reports. The latest national telephone surveys find that McCain has the biggest advantage on the war in Iraq, by a 51% to 39% margin.

Larry,

I think Keith did it totally out of UBER-HOTS for “the ONE” and I think there are OTHERS who will (on their own) take protecting BAMBI onto their OWN purpose.

What about those break in’s at the passport dept that turned out (after Keith’s RAMPANT INSANITY over it MUST BE the REPUGS or worse YET HILLARY) turned out to be Obama people, protecting Bambi’s record?

I have to wonder. (or has that been debunked and I missed the follow up?)

The reason Obama wrote the book is to establish who he is. If anybody has any question about his past, just read the book.

Convenient, right?

Watch the movie, “Being There.” This movie was released in 1979.

Chauncey “Chance” Gardiner’s empty-headed pronouncements and generalizations are taken to be profoundly intelligent, metaphorically deep, and wisely insightful. He becomes wealthy, is treated as a famous celebrity in the media, and becomes a political advisor for the rich and powerful, including the President. His new found popularity leads to talk show appearances, insider parties, book publisher advances, and the potential to become a presidential candidate.

Comment by georgiapeach | 2008-08-07 01:21:25

That’s the standard Obot reply to any questions or doubts about him. “Obviously, you haven’t read his books” Or “Everything you need to know is on his website”. That’s probably why he doesn’t do that well among older people. They don’t want to be told what to think about him. They want to hear him answer questions, and judge for themselves whether he is telling the truth.

Comment by Auntie Meme | 2008-08-06 20:14:48

It is likely that the Obama camp struck ABC as payback for the incredibly inane moderation of Gibson and Stephanopoulos, according to Huffpost today and others. Hillary would’ve been justified in doing the same. The entire debate was a farce, with very little time spent on substantive issues.

Of course, Larry zeros in on the particularly farcical parts. But then, as one of the chief propagators of the “Whitey video” lies, Larry knows all about falsehood and distortion. Doncha L(i)ar?

Comment by Lyn | 2008-08-06 20:25:46

but you didn’t have any problem during the other 19 debates where Hillary got all the tough questions? right Obama had 1 debate that asked some real questions and pouted for days and quit having debates.
The debate in I believe Octber was an absolute disgrace and Obama had no problems joining the other guys and Russert in the pile on of Hillary

I think that worked to Hillary’s advantage. He came off looking like a lightweight, and a lot of people discovered a newfound respect and admiration for Hillary. Most people figured out even before the SNL skit that the deck was stacked against her in the debates. A lot of people who thought they didn’t like her started to grudgingly admire her toughness. And I think a lot of them started to realize they didn’t dislike her as much as they thought they did.

It won’t take long for even the press that admires BO to revolt against his obsession with controlling every little thing that is said about him.

And his brittle humorless “I can’t take criticism” crybaby personality is going to absolutely destroy him.

Politicians need a thick skin. I wonder why BO never grew one, lol, could it be he has used the race card his ENTIRE political life.

Already growing exhausted of the overused, overplayed, BS race card, people won’t vote for a would-be president who yells “racism” every time he is criticized in the slightest.

Comment by wodiej | 2008-08-06 18:40:26

I agree and let me add that the race card has been overplayed for quite some time and people are just about damn sick and tired of it. Every perceived slight is cause to throw the race card out there. Enough already. Perhaps Obama doing it is just what our society needs to get over it and move on.

Either the caller is lying or he is black. My understanding is over 80% of the black Republicans are voting for Obama.

This election has opened up people’s eyes on how racist blacks are. They are quick to play the race card but don’t admit they are racist. I heard a black caller on the radio today come out and say the only reason he supports Obama because he is black. At least he was willing to admit what he was doing but did not want to admit he was racist.

Comment by Pink Panther | 2008-08-06 20:05:27

I heard a similar call on a radio show. The caller said he was a black Republican and this is the first time he will vote for a Democrat. The host asked how he could do that when Obama is against everything that Republicans stand for and the caller said that at least Obama knows what blacks want and need; McCain does not.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-08-06 20:25:45

I don’t fault following lines of race or ethnicity in casting votes, especially when it’s a glass ceiling issue. One EXPECTS black to vote for black, Irish to vote for Irish, Arab to vote for Arab, Jew to vote for Jew…not unanimously, certainly, but a preponderance shouldn’t be a surprise. Ethnic pride does exist.

What offends me is trying to paint an opponent as a BIGOT to rile up that base.

That’s just wrong.

Comment by NoBamaNoWay | 2008-08-06 22:03:26

that kind of voting is bad news and definitely not something that should be encouraged or accepted in america. from now on, what is a white democrat supposed to do when they run against a black democrat, and they know they will lose 90% of the black vote no matter what? you figure it out. it’s not good for america. qualifications should be the only thing that matters.

Comment by Obama is a bum | 2008-08-07 00:02:14

I’ve never voted that way but I recognize others do. The blacks demonstrated that to them that is by far the main issue for them. That is also the reason Mexicans want open borders and high immigration. They understand that they can eventually control the US and they will merge Mexico into the US, hence Obama’s extra seven states with come from Mexico.

Why is it that the last two Dem Pres candidates have pushed their wives to the sidelines? Heck I thought it was kind of funny that Sen. I have lately read increasingly frequent observations in the mainstream press that Obama’s organization is growing increasingly secretive and Chicago-centric. The petty exclusion of the New Yorker’s correspondent on the European tour is interesting addition to the puzzle, but what is this a facet of? Maybe he’s trying not to make a fuck-up before the convention, maybe he’s arrogant, maybe he just needs some time alone with his inner child. Time will tell.

Journalists have likewise not fared well with the Bush Administration. RTE’s Carole Coleman was denied the scheduled follow-on interview with the First Lady after daring to ask George II to explain a few of his answers during an interview, . The lad’s only craic is in his ass.

So, Johnson, I’d take a pass on both JFK and Nixon analogies and segue straight to Dubya.

Comment by AF catfish | 2008-08-06 19:11:16

Bush locked out the press because the right wing does that. Barry is a narcissist:

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. They believe that they’re superior to others and have little regard for other people’s feelings. It’s strange, isn’t it? Everything about his campaign since Pa. primary has been controlled like Bush/Cheney. No real press conferences on that European trip or since. When he has had them in the past, he thinks eight questions are more than enough.

IMO his campaign is trying to avoid major blunders before Denver, but what do they plan for the GE? Just rallies? When I saw who the moderators will be for the debates, I asked my husband why John McCain would agree, but it could mean McCain is ready and believes he can win the debates even under circumstances favorable to Obama.

It wasn’t in the post, but the first two will take place in the South and the last in NY. We can try to lighten up on this blog, but it is a fact I often feel like crying. Guess I shouldn’t say that because Brazil will call me hysterical.

I also would like to know to what extent Obama or his campaign have attempted to influence media coverage and where. KO has charged the FOX News pundits of receiving daily talking points from Bush and/or Cheney. Is he making the decisions on his own or is MSNBC news director outlining a position of support for Obama and covering up the negatives? I stopped watching MSNBC completely several months ago as well as any programming on NBC. There have been others who have said the same so how are the ratings going there? I’ve even considered printing out my own fliers to hand out in front of grocery stores or put under the window wipers of cars asking for a boycott. Aside from the incomprehensible way Hillary was treated by that so-called news outlet, it is something supporters of any candidate should oppose and consider the long run consequences to the free press. It is very discouraging, even frightening, how easy it has been for the media to take over the election process and create false perceptions of candidates. Of course, this isn’t the first time. I still believe the continuous coverage of the “swiftboat” people helped sink Kerry. I remember clearly, Mathews gave almost daily coverage, inviting them on his show, pretending to chastise them on occasion, but never any real “Hardball” questions. The run-up to the Iraq invasion pumped them all up (and their ratings). They worked with the Pentagon in exchange for embedding reporters whose reports had to be approved by the military. Would they have been more honest in their reporting if they had not been so anxious to have their reporters working hand in hand with the Pentagon? Cooperation of the press with military operations and political campaigns should concern everyone no matter what their own ideology is.

Comment by HillGirl | 2008-08-06 19:07:51

Yes, I thought the same – that KO and CM and others were hired to get Hillary OUT! It must have infuriated them that no matter how hard they tried, she kept winning state after state.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-08-06 20:39:26

I’m looking for the article. The reporter who got dumped on has a name like Adam Nourgy…?…something like that…darn, I wish I could find it! grrr…

I’ll post it if I can find it…

Anyway, I can’t find the exact article I was looking for, but there are issues brewing with Obama his media…apparently they need to kiss his ass or they get attacked/ ousted in some form.

End of the Affair:
“Around midnight on July 16, New York Times chief political correspondent Adam Nagourney received a terse e-mail from Barack Obama’s press office.”

Thanks for posting those links. I haven’t seen that, but it pretty much illustrates their attitude toward the press. If the rest are paying attention, I hope they will somehow find the courage to fight back. It appears if they don’t go along, they are punished in some way. Is the same true of SDs?

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-08-06 20:50:05

And to piss off the Grey Lady, too!

Even when NYT rolled it out and stepped on it by reporting the McCain and the Lobbyist story based on the anonymous griping of two former staffers (said to be working for Romney) without any actual FACT to back it up (no hotel rooms, no steamy rendezvous, just a few off color jokes and a bit of joshing), well, they backed away quietly, bt still did some damage.

Imagine if they were MOTIVATED to do the “death by a thousand cuts” routine. It would not be very hard at all.

Comment by Andy | 2008-08-06 20:38:21

kat in your hat:

The article of TNR is utmost interesting beyond the Nagourney story. There is this paragraph that
raises all the red flags:

Reporters who have covered Obama’s biography or his problems with certain voter blocs have been challenged the most aggressively. “They’re terrified of people poking around Obama’s life,” one reporter says. “The whole Obama narrative is built around this narrative that Obama and David Axelrod built, and, like all stories, it’s not entirely true. So they have to be protective of the crown jewels.” Another reporter notes that, during the last year, Obama’s old friends and Harvard classmates were requested not to talk to the press without permission.

(emphasis mine)

Comment by kat in your hat | 2008-08-07 00:46:28

Yes, good points.

And this:

“I’ve never had an experience like this, with this campaign or others,” Nagourney tells me. “I thought they crossed the line. If you have a problem with a story I write, call me first. I’m a big boy. I can handle it. But they never called. They attacked me like I’m a political opponent.”

It wasn’t the Red Queen who ordered, “Off with their heads!” in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It was the Queen of Hearts.

The Red Queen appears in the second Alice book, Through the Looking-Glass, and what Alice found there. She is a chess piece, not one of a deck of cards.

He treats evenhanded the exact same way he treats even the mildest criticism – as if it’s a VICIOUS, RACIST ATTACK. (Cue the mass faux outrage!)

If he isn’t being adored, if the “girls” are not giggling and if the “boys” aren’t getting thrills up their leg, The Precious becomes a petulant, nasty child.

And the next step, of course, for bambi and his thugs, is THE ALL-OUT CAMPAIGN TO SMEAR AND COMPLETELY RUIN anyone who dares question “The One.”

Ruining a reputation, a legacy, a career…all in a day’s work for The Bamboozler and his crew.

Zogby has McCain up by 1 point. Hillary Clinton now has the highest favorable rating among all the candidates. There is a considerable amount of buyer’s remorse. If by the start of the convention the super delegates could be convinced that Obama is a loser, maybe, just maybe we could have her as our nominee.

Zogby’s are owned by a Middle Eastern family. Zogby’s will never show Obama is tanking.

It’d take a miracle and the Rethugs are holding back until after the Dem convention is over, just in case. There’s not a chance in hell that BO can win, he’s dropping already and this is not a guy with the fortitude and guts needed to make a comeback. The Dems are dumber than a box of rocks, but maybe there’s hope enough of them will wake-up to see what is very apparent. With HRC we have a great shot at winning, with BO we lose. It’s that simple.

Obama is going to run out of Press to throw under the bus.
Then he’ll have to rely on his disciple trolls to carry on the adulation. Since they are just as unimpressive as “um uh” Obama as speakers for his cause, he’ll have to end up throwing them under the bus too.

Comment by s. hall | 2008-08-07 01:40:56

democracy first — Seems Obama has made more enemies than friends since he became the presumptious nominee. Right now its the Democratic Base and some Reporters who are under the bus — but if this guy gets to be Potus he will have the military at his beck and call. Watch out moms — Uncle BO wants your son.

I found this link on Heidi Li’s site and as Heidi stated, it is totally creepy and frightening. This is a community service post which Senator Obama has allowed to remain on his website for quite some time. It could disappear at any time as it ended today. Maybe you’ve seen this, but I hadn’t, and I found it disgusting and frightening to think that Obama would condone this.

Non-Interference, U.S. Election Law and Germany’s Obama Contribution

The excitement — however artificially stimulated by opening rock bands and generously inflated crowd estimates — of Barack Obama’s speech in Berlin is now passed. What remains are some serious questions: notably, for German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit. The two leading Social Democrats — both touted as possible candidates for the chancellorship in the 2009 German elections — were also the two politicians most closely associated with the push to have the American presidential candidate give a high-profile public speech in the German capital.

It is a well-established principle of international law that states are not supposed to interfere in the internal affairs of other states. Some would now claim that this “principle of non-interference” has in practice — notably since the Kosovo War — been modified to permit foreign interventions in the case of severe human rights violations. But no one — not even the German jurists and diplomats who have pressed for a “loosening” of the principle — claims that it allows of any other exceptions.

John McCain is now trusted more than Barack Obama on nine out of 14 electoral issues tracked by Rasmussen Reports. The latest national telephone surveys find that McCain has the biggest advantage on the war in Iraq, by a 51% to 39% margin.

Perhaps the most interesting finding of these polls is that McCain has expanded his leads on nearly every issue he had previously had the advantage on, while Obama’s leads have diminished over the past two weeks.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll shows the race for the White House is very close. The results are consistent with results from the past couple of weeks showing a race that is essentially even as the convention season approaches (see recent daily results).

In the new survey, McCain has tripled his lead on the topic of immigration. He now has a 45% to 36% advantage over his Democratic opponent, up from a three-point lead two weeks ago.

The Republican also has pulled ahead on the issue of balancing the federal budget. Two weeks ago, the candidates were tied on this issue at 40%. McCain now has a 43% to 40% lead on the issue among voters.

McCain used to be behind on the issue of Social Security but has pulled ahead of Obama for a 44% to 38% lead.

On issues that Obama has previously enjoyed huge advantages, such as health care and education, his leads have decreased. On health care, Obama leads 46% to 41%, down from a 12 percentage-point lead just two weeks ago. On education, Obama leads 43% to 39%, down from a 10-point lead two weeks ago. On environmental issues, Obama’s advantage over McCain has gone from 14 percentage points down to eight this week.

The economy is the top issue for the majority of voters this election season. Voters have consistently trusted the Democratic Party more on this issue, but the two presidential candidates are tied at 45% as to who voters trust more. A week prior, Obama had a statistically insignificant one percentage point lead on the issue.

On national security, an issue that McCain consistently performs well on, the Republican leads 52% to 40%. His lead represents an improvement from the eight-point lead he held the week before

Well here’s hoping that Brian Ross, Jake Tapper, George Steph., and others from ABC News read No Quarter and Texas Darlin. Maybe they’ll feel freer now to start doing a better job of reporting which will greatly boost their viewing audience. I can’t tell you how many people I run into on a regular basis that mention without me bringing it up first how biased and uninformative most of the mainstream news media is now.

Speaking of the Fraud Prince and the press (and reminders of GWB)
did you catch this response to the reporter who was rude enough to ask a real question?

RALSTON: I guess what the American people want to know though Senator, is what is the real difference between you and John McCain. You are running this ad tying him to the industry saying that he has taken all of these contributions, but as you well know there is a story out today about how you supported the Dick Cheney bill and he opposed it. That bill gave subsidies to the oil and gas companies, John McCain opposed the bill saying those are tax breaks for those companies, Barack Obama favored it.
SEN. OBAMA: Hold on a second Jon, I thought I was talking to you instead of debating John McCain, but I am happy to let you serve as his proxy. The fact of the matter is that I supported that energy bill saying at the time that those tax breaks were wrong but also recognizing that this was the largest investment in alternative energy in history. And that it was important for us, for the solar industry to get off the ground in places like Nevada, for to get wind kicked off the ground, that that was something that we had to do and I immediately said during that time and subsequently that we should strip out those tax breaks for oil companies. I would point out that in December of last year, we had a vote to strip out those tax breaks for oil companies, there was one Senator that did not vote on that measure, and that was John McCain

Ralston is one of the few interesting writers in the Nevada media. His voice and manner of speaking are abrasive as hell on TV, but his writing is fluid and elegant.

If he pissed off The Golden One, then good for him. I read him every morning in the Las Vegas SUN.

Check this out ev1
Does this sound familiar

This will be considered off-topic — but it isn’t. I thought I’d share this letter which was sent to the Editor of the Times-Dispatch by a gentlemen who escaped Cuba in the 1960’s. His words come from the experience of believing in someone, without taking the time to know who they really are, and the consequences that followed:

Subject: Celebration

From Richmond Times-Dispatch, Monday, July 7, 2008

Dear Editor, Times-Dispatch:

Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day, and on July 4, I celebrate America ’s. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.

On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba, and a few months later, I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.

I’ve thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, so when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.

When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said, ‘Praise the Lord.’ And when the young leader said, ‘I will be for change and I’ ll bring you change,’ everone yelled, ‘Viva Fidel!’

But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner’s guns went silent, the people’s guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education, it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented, Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over, more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I’m back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we in America would never fall for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America ?

Would we?

Nonsense. Milbank was a bad journalist – he should never have been there. Neither should Olberman be, of course. Don’t make the mistake of assuming your enemy’s enemies are your friends – it gets you into really nasty company. Like the mujahidin. Hailed as heroes when torturing and slaughtering Russian conscripts, as I recall.

There was a time when I listened with interest to the commentary and opinions of black ‘journalists’ on TV. No more, because, with perhaps one exception. They’re too busy being black (supporting O) and saying anything in his favor, than actually analyzing in a balanced fashion. They have done the black cause irreparable damage and lost credibility with viewers who are old enough to recognize bias when they see it.
