WHATEVER HAPPENS AT THE CONVENTION, IF OBAMA IS THE NOMINEE, THE DNC CAN KISS THE ELECTION GOODBYE. They may have another impromtu convention and have the delegates vote again (it wouldn't have to be a huge affair with speeches/events). It may be that the DNC can simply decide the new nominee- especially if there is a lack of time before the general. I really don't think that the VP choice automatically would get the Presidential nomination. It's worth checking into the Democratic rules/policies and see if your points are addressed there.
