Barky Visits Typical White Grandmother Without Michelle or The Kids

Obama — escorted by Secret Service and accompanied by a few campaign staff and a pool of reporters and camera crews — arrived at about 4:10 p.m. yesterday and spent an hour with his 85-year-old maternal grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who helped raise him. He was not accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and two daughters.
I guess he didn’t want to leave his signature anywhere either.
One woman who lives in the building had two books authored by Obama in hand and watched as the elevator doors closed. She waited patiently outside the elevator.
She was refused.
I guess Obama was preoccupied with some business that needed to be conducted. Most everybody says Some say it has to do with taking care of the old Birth Certificate problem. And Grandma, after all, is a first-hand witness. No Quarter has noticed that his official birth certificate says his name is Barry Soetoro. That would mean that the Birth Certificate flaunted by KOS really ISN’T real as **TexasDarlin has been reporting.
Ditto for the birth certificate that was posted over at Barack Obama’s Hide The Truth And Call It a Smear site. But hey, trying to figure out exactly who a presidential candidate really is has always been complex, right?

You know, it seems to me that when John McCain’s citizenship was challenged, he had no problem planking his birth certificate down on the table in front of the press. Why is it that Obama’s citizenship, birth certificate and name questions have to be a cloak and dagger affair? Who exactly IS this guy that he thinks he doesn’t have to answer any questions about his candidacy posed by the Peons he wants to Rule? Just asking.

I think there can be sensible reasons for Obama’s conduct, though I admit that my lack of knowledge about the circumstances surrounding the visit could cause me to reach off the mark conclusions.
What is the health status of his grandmother? If she is not well, there can be good reasons for a one-on-one visit. If she is unwell, her physician might mandate that the visits be small, short, and relatively uneventful.
Even if she is well, Obama’s situation is not normal (presumptive nominee), so there can be good reasons for not having a full family visit. Further, why would we think that there will not be other visits?
I think Obama is a poor choice for president. I think there is a preponderance of evidence that demonstrates he is a poor choice. I think we should avoid doing things that might create empathy for Obama and concentrate our inquiries and critiques on issues and events that demonstrate his unsuitably for president based on his record and what his actions say about his character.

There is no logical reason for the children not to have gone with him. There is no way to spin this in a positive way. You gotta wonder…what was he thinking?
When asked why he was taking a vacation at this time, he made a very big deal about how his grandmother wanted to see his children. Something like “she wants to spend some time with her grandchildren and I want to spend some time with those same children”. So, why in the hell would he take off three weeks before the convention, poll numbers in the crapper, go to Hawaii, leaving Hillay to do his work, and not allow his grandmother to see her great grandchildren? He is just plain MEAN.
And his children need to get used to the media circus if he is going to be King of the World. He managed to drag along his campaign people. Obama is showing himself to be a real jerk. My grandmother was a lot older than his (and in a nursing home) and I took my kids to see her. It was important to her and to them.

Okay, my hubby’s grandmother is 100 years old and in frail health. He took our kids up to another state hundreds of miles away in June so they could see her, because we both felt that it was important for them to visit with her at her advanced age, since it might be the last opportunity they got. I didn’t go because I had to work, but if I’d had the time off, I certainly would have paid a visit. ‘Cause it what, you know, FAMILIES do!
You are absolutely on the money. That is what families do. I remember how difficult it was for my family to visit with our 98 yr old grandmother. We did it. She was thrilled. She had some difficulty with illness, but she could not believe how many great, great, grandkids she had. She forgot about it in a few days, but the moment was priceless. She passed away less than a year later. Family obligations.

In this instance, I can understand a low-key, short visit. I have an elderly grandparent who suffers from dementia, and one hour is about the right amount. By then the tiredness and lack of ability to converse takes away any further meaningful interaction.
On the other hand, I haven’t read or seen any information that suggests his grandmother suffers from dementia (after all, she still lives in the same apartment where the Senator spent the latter part of his childhood). To quote Obama, she “loves [him] as much as she can love anything in this world”, so it’s difficult to understand why he didn’t take the girls to see her. They’re not babies; they can stay quiet and behaved for a short visit.
We all have families, so we know relationships can be complicated. But, it still looks odd.

If she had dementia, it is highly unlikely she would live alone or without a caregiver, due to such basic potential problems as forgetting a pot on the stove or leaving an iron on. I think it best to err on the side of compassion when discussing his grandmother.

We just took our family to visit grandma this summer. We went to her house immediately. She was thrilled to see the grandchildren and she would have been astounded if we had visited her without them. And if his grandmother is in poor health, all the more reason for the grandchildren to see her. A one-hour visit, by himself? How about having lunch together or dinner? If we visited our grandmother for one hour, after flying across the country to see her, she would be shocked and so would everyone else in the family. Again, if she has any health problems,there is absolutely no reason (and perhaps even more reason) for the whole family to visit her, even if briefly. It makes no sense whatsoever, unless grandma’s mad as hell for the “typical white woman” comment (I would be), they have a bad relationship (likely), and/or it was a business trip to go over the birth certificate issue, and he didn’t want the rest of the family around.
And, any racial issues come from the Michelle side, IMO. The grandparents used contacts to get Barry in the most expensive prep school in Hawaii, and they paid for it. They raised him from the time he was 10 years of age; they were progressives, hardly racists.

Does anyone else think it’s odd that he visits his grandmother with his campaign staff?? Does this guy do ANYTHING that is not political or a photo op? When was the last time he saw her? It’s all very unnatural.

Aug. 8 (Bloomberg) — When Barack Obama referred to his grandmother as a “typical white person,” he was underestimating her. As a banker in 1960s Hawaii who offered her grandson one of his earliest models for overcoming barriers, Madelyn Dunham was anything but typical.
“Mrs. Dunham was one of two women in the whole bank system that were officers of any sort,” said Jackie Berry, who began working at Bank of Hawaii under Obama’s maternal grandmother more than 40 years ago.
Obama is traveling today to Honolulu, where he’ll visit the woman he calls “Toot,” short for “tutu,” the Hawaiian word for grandmother. While his late grandfather, Stanley, was a gregarious wanderer and his deceased mother, Ann, an intellectually adventurous free spirit, Dunham, 85, was the steady force who kept her family grounded.
“She was the grand matriarch,” said Maya Soetoro-Ng, 37, Obama’s half-Indonesian sister who lives in Honolulu and helps take care of Dunham. “She was the net beneath us so we could make courageous decisions in our own lives.”
Dunham still resides in the Honolulu apartment building where she and her husband helped raise Obama, 47, now the Democratic presidential candidate. That she’s always rented, even though she was long involved in mortgage lending at the bank, has become a family joke.
`No Nonsense’
Dunham, raised in a strict Methodist home in Kansas, became one of Bank of Hawaii’s first female vice presidents. Berry and others who worked for her say she was an exacting boss who demanded results.
“I never felt intimidated by her, but I felt I had to perform,” Berry said in an interview earlier this year. “She was no-nonsense.”
“She was very, very goal-oriented and moved up the ranks at the bank,” said Representative Neil Abercrombie, a Hawaii Democrat who knew Obama’s parents. “And for a female in Hawaii at the time, let me tell you, it wasn’t easy.”
That whites are a minority in Hawaii made it “doubly difficult” for women, said Abercrombie, 70.
On the campaign trail, Obama, who lived with his grandmother for most of his school years in Honolulu, most often mentions her work on a Boeing Co. bomber-assembly line during World War II, in part to establish a connection with veterans and show he comes from patriotic stock.
`Typical White Person’
Dunham, who turned down a request for an interview, as she routinely does, and is said to be in poor health, made headlines in March, when Obama cited her in his speech addressing race relations amid controversy over incendiary remarks by his former pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright.
“I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – - a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world,” Obama said in the March 18 speech. “But a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed her on the street and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.”
Obama followed up in a radio interview by saying his grandmother was a “typical white person,” a comment that drew criticism on television and throughout the Internet because it was perceived by some as an insult to her and to white people.
“We all harbor stereotypes,” Obama said later when asked about the remark. “That doesn’t make us bad people.”
Last week, Obama said spending time with his grandmother is a top priority. “She’s at an age where it’s really important for me to see her,” he told reporters.
`Pretty Conservative’
Berry said she didn’t realize Obama was Dunham’s grandson until early this year while watching TV.
“She was pretty conservative from my point of view so back then it would have been surprising” to know she had a black grandson, Berry said. “I would have thought: `I wonder what she thinks about that?”’
Madelyn Lee Payne, whose father managed an oil lease for Standard Oil Co. during the Depression, married Stanley Dunham from El Dorado, Kansas, in 1940. Stanley, who served in the Army in World War II and took his family to Hawaii shortly before Obama’s parents met, “would plunge into the thick of things without reserve,” Soetoro-Ng said.
Madelyn Dunham was a more cautious person whose sense of humor “fell under the radar,” Soetoro-Ng says. Still, she credits her with showing how to break glass ceilings.
“Our grandmother, who went in as a bank teller and rose to become vice president, offered a kind of example of one who could make it without altering herself,” she said. “Someone who was true to herself and who earned a great deal of respect in her field.”

it sounds like barry’s sister has more respect for the grandmother than he does.
Thanks for posting this. I think there is little doubt that in a family where most of the members did “what felt good”, Madelyn did what had to be done. Women, who achieved what she did in that time had to overcome barriers we can not even comprehend. As you mentioned, Sandra Day O’Connor was typing letters for men who had not a tenth of her intellect.
On a grander scale, that is why I admire Margaret Thatcher. Politically I have nothing in common with her, but the sheer force of will it took to rise to the pinnacle that she did demands admiration.

Barry went to break the news that he is out of the race, personally to his grandma, so she hears it first from him. That’s my hunch.
Good Lord. Have you guys considered the fact that the children were tired so their mom took them for a rest while dad went to visit his grandmother? Was he supposed to drag them directly to her after a long trip? Have any of you ever traveled with young children before?? If he had done that you all would be accusing him of being a horrible father, guilty of the worst kinds of child abuse.

That’s their great-grandmother, and it’s not like they get to see her everyday. So imo, it’s weird that the wife and kids were not there.
