How John Edwards Helped Destroy Hillary

If the story were known last December of John Edwards’ “egocentric and narcissistic” sexual “liaison,” as he calls it, with a woman he says he wasn’t in love, at a time when he says his wife was in remission from cancer (strangest rationalization for an affair ever recorded in human history), there can be little doubt that today the strongest, best qualified candidate, Hillary Clinton, would be the Democratic nominee.

Instead Edwards stayed in the race, harboring his secret life, knowing that it was likely to be exposed and that if he were somehow to emerge from the primary pack he would be humiliated and obliterated, just as he is now.

In the meantime, knowing full well that he was damaged goods, Edwards engaged in a ferocious negative campaign against Hillary–not Obama.

In effect, he was acting as Obama’s running mate. And Obama benefited enormously from having Edwards do some dirty work against Hillary.

Here’s Edwards’ record of negative attacks against Hillary below. For this, more than for his human failings, he deserves scorn.

what? I’m first???

Comment by standard | 2008-08-10 19:57:04

I always thought Edwards was a nutcase and opportunist.
I mean, he dropped out of the senate so he could hang around Iowa campaigning for president for FOUR years before the primary! Iowans must have been terrified of the loon.

In ‘04, he was Mr. Righteous about not attacking, and scolded other debaters when they did.
Then in ‘08, went after HRC like a rabid animal.

In ‘08, he was trying to get the old Dean base, by claiming to be the new left. Then it turned out his senate record was conservative.

The Daily Kos droids were sucked in. Even though Edwards was a slick talker with nothing to back it with, they fell all over him.

His hypocrisy reached a pinnacle when he endorsed Obama whose plans were to the far right of Hillary Clinton’s.

This concocted BS about claiming he would do a DNA, then getting his girlfriend to refuse. And getting his best friend to say that he was the father.

This man is a liar and schemer.

Comment by Kat Bee | 2008-08-10 20:24:47

Who else here thinks Obama got a timely endorsement from Edwards by a veiled allusion to his family issues?

Comment by roseeriter | 2008-08-11 02:55:34

Edwards is a quitter. This affair rumor was out in the National Enquirer in Jan or Feb. I remember bringing it up at dkos back then and the progressive thugs jumped all over me for it.

The kids saw the pretty face and based much of their support again with that American Idol mentality. Many of us thought he was like a used car salesman and that hair youtube video brought his narcissm and ego glaringly into play for those of us who could see his flaws.

Reading all those headlines above, my guess is he was in cahoots already with Obama to ruin Hillary.

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-08-11 01:04:29

Um, Edwards didn’t “drop out” of the Senate to “hang around Iowa campaigning for president for FOUR years before the primary”. I’m not positive, but I believe under North Carolina law, Edwards was caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Edwards’ Senate term expired in January of 2005, two months AFTER the 2004 General Election. Edwards may not have been given the option to run as the Democratic nominee for Vice-President and run for re-election to the Senate (in fact, most states prohibit a candidate’s running for two different elected offices*); he had to choose. He chose to accept Kerry’s offer to be the Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate.
The rationale behind this is that most states don’t want to waste the time in replacing a candidate who might happen to win BOTH races and opt for the higher office.

*Texas is one of the very few exceptions. When Lloyd Bentsen was selected to run as Dukakis’ VP candidate in 1988, he was also allowed to run for re-election to the Senate. While he and Dukakis failed in the Presidential race, he did win re-election and returned to the Senate where he continued serving until early 1993 when Clinton nominated him to be Treasury Secretary. Presumably, if Bentsen became the VP after the 1988 General Election, a special election would have been held or the Governor would appoint someone to serve until the next regular election could be held.

Comment by BJinChicago | 2008-08-11 01:40:24

Actually the people of North Carolina did not like Edwards’ work in the Senate and he would have lost if he had run for another term. He did not win NC fo Kerry in the presidential race.

Absolutely.

Of the three Democratic frontrunners this year, Hillary is the ONLY candidate who will still have a strong political career and can still become President in 2012.

Obama and Edwards, however, are toast.

Comment by norrismorris | 2008-08-11 14:48:28

Hillary did not destroy herself. True Penn and others miscalculated and felt it would be over on Super Tues, but the perception of Obama’s invincibility emerging from Iowa would not have occurred without Edwards on ballot.

He was the Hillary Hit Man, and Elizabeth was far from kind about Hillary when stumping for a man [Edwards] she knew to be a bum.

The dishonesty involving this relationship with Hunter reeks of unethical behavior way beyond sex.
She formed a 2 bit comppany days before joning Edwards campaign, “to video him and let everyone know how honest he was”. She was paid $114,000 4 or 5 times by a donor named Baron [and others], and lived in a 3 million dollar home. She is also known to be a doper.

The child was claimed as belonging to a campaign staffer, and this story is so full of deceptions and lies we have to wonder if campaign donation dollars paid for Edwards affair? He had major donors in 2006 when he claimed to have ended this “liason”.

I could easily believe many knew about it and covered it up, including Elizabeth Edwards. Why would anyone do this for this loser? Power and payback.

Was he “The Hillary Slayer”? Or does the DNC have no vetting process or common sense and aptitude to select decent candidates? It seems not.

Comment by wac for hillary | 2008-08-10 18:39:29

Comment by JKIR | 2008-08-11 00:20:48

Comment by Kat Bee | 2008-08-11 09:05:16

I think she should apply hair remover to his head while he sleeps.

Comment by Joe | 2008-08-10 18:56:32

Edwards, like the Messiah, thought that he could get away with covering up his past and soon began to believe in his own hype and invincibility. What he did to Hillary was despicable, and I’m glad Hillary didn’t get his endorsement. As my civil engineer father-in-law always said, based on his observations of hiring practices, that first-rate hire first-rate while second-rate hire third-rate. John Edwards, like his co-loser John Kerry, are bottom-rate politicians, which explains their choice for POTUS.

Comment by cleffnote | 2008-08-10 19:27:38

Edwards gave his endorsement to Obama, but not his delegates. Lets go get em. The delegates I mean.

Comment by lute | 2008-08-10 20:01:59

Who are they? Are they the “undecided”?

What isn’t mentioned is that a lot of Edward’s followers have gender bias, and could be a hard sell.
But Hillary is a lot further left than Obozo.

Comment by Chiten | 2008-08-10 20:42:14

he conceded, so his delegates are free to vote for anyone of their choice.

Comment by B from Bloomington | 2008-08-10 20:53:13

I do hope that is true. RealClear politics has it that Obama got Edwards 21 delegates. If not for that, and halving all those votes, Clinton would be ahead in the pledged delegate count. And didn’t they tell the superdelegates to vote for the one who had the most pledged delegates… that would be Clinton. And of course she won in the popular vote. I’m with you… let’s go get ‘em! There votes rightfully belong to Clinton.

Comment by JKIR | 2008-08-11 00:23:47

Sadly, I thought that creep Edwards encouraged his delegates to go over to Obama when he endorsed him.

Comment by CheapEmptySuit | 2008-08-10 20:59:53

cough up the delegates or we will reveal that the kid is really his!

Comment by norrismorris | 2008-08-11 14:53:30

Edwards delegates should go Hillary.

Shirley Chisholm’s 150 delegates were counted on the convention floor and she was aptly honored.

Hillary with over 1600 [not counting Edwards] deserves the same respect. Her delegates should be counted.

Comment by dgr | 2008-08-10 19:44:50

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-08-10 19:48:41

Hillary called him out on milking his wife’s cancer, and she responded by pretty much calling her an evil bitch. I think that’s how it went. I think they were probably well-matched, the Edwards.

Comment by B from Bloomington | 2008-08-10 20:56:56

Yeah, that and ACORN.

Comment by Gloria | 2008-08-11 00:23:19

Also, I’ve got a report on ACORN in NM (in trouble AGAIN, this time in NM) going up in about a half an hour….(Monday,8/11)

Comment by JKIR | 2008-08-11 00:28:57

Have a little pity for Elizabeth. She’s dying and got children to worry about. She’s got to try to keep some semblance of their family together because the kids will need that POS John after she’s gone. She’s really between a rock and a hard place. The stress will probably shorten her time left.

Comment by Newly Independent | 2008-08-11 03:10:29

I agree.

I feel genuine pity for Elizabeth and her children. They are dealing with ALOT. I’ll pray that God will keep them strong and at peace through this tough time.

Comment by Matthew Weaver | 2008-08-10 18:16:17

Edwards betrayal goes far beyond this. I also blame the media who now admit they new and covered it up or ignored it. Can any look Elizabeth in the eye with any level of integrity and trust?

By the way, for an affair from 2006 that was over, what was Edwards NOW sneaking into hotel rooms in LA for?

Comment by Mr.Murder | 2008-08-10 18:18:19

John Edwards gets my vote for Pope.

He likes old women instead of young boys, that’s a step up for the Vatican.

Call him toast when it comes to American politics. He got what he wanted out of two runs, money to retire on.

This was probably a known known in back rooms as well. He didn’t want to run for Senate as an incumbent, he knew something might come up?

Comment by AF catfish | 2008-08-10 18:19:10

So now Hillary is relegated back to the role of first lady: convention schedule is:

Barack Obama (Thurs.)

First the wives, then the men.

Comment by doctorwang | 2008-08-10 19:08:14

Comment by ObamaIzSexist | 2008-08-10 20:43:51

The “new” Democratic Party is sexist. It wants the country to believe otherwise but this primary season has brought the leaderships’ innermost feelings to the surface.

Leftist men want it all from women- women to:

clean their house,
raise their children,
cook their dinner,
wash their clothes,
work outside the home to bring in money for their use,
have values free sex,
and you can add to the list.

But left leaning men do not want to share the power. Women are considered second class citizens. Obama, his male supporters and Dean have proven this point.

This primary has certain been an education.

The Fake Wing Conservative Far Left Liberal run media won’t cover the real story! They are disgustingly showing their prejudice against Mr. Smarmypants with good hair (part Indian per Eddie “what choodun foh me latelee Edeee?” fame.

But leave it to the media to only focus on his good side. He had a cute baby, I admit. But come on! He has let his hair go to shit! Did you see that picture of him with the child? Elizabeth would never let his hair go that loose or dress him that way before he went out unless she knew he was going to meet up with the Baby-fo-Money (and the chick’s for free) New-Tart of the Hour …. I want my.. I want my.. I want my hour on TeeVee!

Yeah, but Bill is better at it. He could probably sweet talk a woman to climax without even touching her. Edwards would be too afraid of messing up his hair.

At least he had enough sense not to get anyone pregnant. Edwards needs a surgical procedure, IMHO.

It’s not about who they sleep with, it’s about whether they uphold their oath of office to protect and defend the Constitutition of the United States. JFK and Bill Clinton did abide by their oath of office while the three Bs (Bush, Bush, Barack) have not been such good public servants even if they haven’t been caught in the politicians’ favorite pastime - yet.

Comment by elise | 2008-08-11 02:53:06

Excuse me Ted, but are you trying to make a point? Are you trying to blame Bill Clinton for Edward’s affair the way you blamed Hillary for Bill’s indiscretions?

You are often OT and I wonder if you may have AADD? The point is hypocrisy and manipulation using misogyny as a means to undermine a qualified and dedicated candidate.

Do you believe Edwards was delusional to the extent he believed he could hide this affair when a child was involved or could you believe Andrew Young is actually this child’s father? Bill Clinton’s BJ in the Oval Office seems innocent in comparison to this sordid affair with the attempts to cover up the truth, letting others take the blame, campaign money used to pay the mistress and money funneled through another supporter for the upkeep of the woman involved not to mention the impression he has left of her indiscriminate and promiscuous sleeping around.

Add the high fives all around when they tag teamed Hillary during debates and the lingering questions about how much Obama knew and whether he used John Edwards as his attack dog knowing Edwards was not a real threat to his ambitions.

I usually have a great reserve of empathy for anyone terminally ill with cancer from my experience as caregiver to my mother who died of ovarian cancer. However, I do remember Elizabeth Edwards being particularly hostile to Hillary which would indicate she is lacking in empathy for another woman who went through the public humiliation of having her personal pain used as a weapon against her.

Are you familiar with The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling? Every time I read one of your comments, I am reminded of the snake, Kaa. You slither in to mislead and somehow it always comes back to Hillary or Bill Clinton.

Comment by ALforHill | 2008-08-10 18:22:16

I said as much in a blog yesterday. John Edwards, Biden, Dodd, and Richardson were put in to sabotage Hillary and Bill. Run the decoys to knock her poll numbers down and her negatives up. Assholes, paid for by Soros and the DNC. Obama is not through with his destruction yet. Take what he wants, promise them anything and then out comes the old “knife in the back, Barack.”

Comment by Faustina | 2008-08-10 18:33:52

What you suggest really seems like the most reasonable explanation for what happened based on what we know now. If both Edwards and his wife and his entire family knew about this affair in 2006, as Edwards claims, and both Edwards being politically sophisticated and presumably not fools, then they must have had some extremely powerful incentives to forge ahead with the Presidential campaign. I am assuming that it was NOT just ego.

But why, why, why are these Democrats so intent on destroying the best presidential candidate to come along in decades?

Something is going on here behind the scenes that we need to know about. My guess is that the roots of this mystery go back deep into Bill Clinton’s administration and, who knows, maybe the ultimate explanation has the same roots as the impeachment and unending persecuation of the Clintons during the 1990s and beyond.

Comment by bert | 2008-08-10 18:56:52

Part of it is that ultra-liberal Democrats never felt Bill Clinton was a pure liberal. He was too conservative for them. He wasn’t liberal enough. He ‘trangulated’ on the issues. (For instance, the welfare bill.)And frankly, I have never understood this attitude. And I also don’t know what is the difference between triangulation and working with Republicans in a non-partisian manner.

But there is more to this year and the hatred against Hillary that I still don’t understand.

Comment by Gayle | 2008-08-10 20:10:49

He was also an outsider, a hick from a tiny southern state.

Remember, he wasn’t supposed to win. The big Democratic establishment guys didn’t run that year because GHW Bush’s poll numbers were well into the 90s during the first Gulf War. Bill Clinton’s rise was a shock to the party. Half the party still thinks he’s a Bubba, even through he’s always been the smartest man in the room.

Comment by Dee | 2008-08-10 20:52:41

Two of Clinton’s biggest obstructionist (and powerful senate Chairs) when he arrived in D.C. were Senator Boren of Oklahoma and Senator Nunn of Georga - both Dems. Not exactly liberals.

As a matter of fact, if you closed your eyes to his party affiliation, Clinton was a damned good Republican president for three years, never giving anyone ANYTHING when they whined.

Except for the Rise of the Evil Newt in 1995, it wasn’t a bad little First Term.

He even proved that, no matter HOW hard they RayGunz and George Hideous Wanker Bush) worked to fuck it up for 12 years, the underpinnings of the Economy were robust and would respond positively to appropriate fiscal policy.

Comment by Chiten | 2008-08-10 21:02:49

The powers that be could not control Bill Clinton. They have even less of a chance of controlling Hillary Clinton. They don’t want her in there because they would not be able to weild power and would be under her control instead of the other way around. Just the thought of it scares them to death.
She should run third party, I think she would have a good chance of not only getting a plurality, but a majority over both the other candidates.

Comment by Freebird76 | 2008-08-11 02:45:27

Well I kind of agree.

But I think it was a war for power within the party.

John Murtha, who courageously stood up against everyone against the Iraq War — a master stroke by Rove I”m sure the pupperbastard.

There was a power struggle and at the end of it, Pelostit ended up getting the Speakership.

And the poop has not stopped flushing out of Washington since. They can’t get anything done and they have split the party to gain or keep their power.

Another day that should have been in Tara.

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-08-10 19:51:09

I think there could be some truth to what you’re saying, ALforHill, about the likes of Edwards as stalking horses for HRC. If they weren’t, of themselves, then at least being used as such by figures like Rove and those opposed to the Clintons in the DNC and the Dem Party.

Today was the first day I felt as though — barring Hillary’s being his VP choice — Obama cannot win the election. Not that I personally don’t want him to win, but that he will have no actual shot at winning.

Part of this is based on what Larry Johnson wrote last night. Part of it is based on Rasmussen’s polling. There are other factors as well that I’m not going to get into right now.

After months of concern and angst, I finally feel as though the USA is going to avoid the Barry Soetoro asteroid from striking it. There’s still plenty to be done, don’t get me wrong, but signs are strongly pointing to a Soetoro loss in November if he is nominated.

Thank goodness.

Comment by Chiten | 2008-08-10 21:08:52

It’s looking as if he won’t even be getting the nomination, if everything falls into place as it should. The Clintons either have a deal wtih the devil or are favored by God, but they always come out smelling like a rose.
Two people with THAT much intelligence and talent between them make a very formidable couple. Chelsea is finding her own sea legs and could be a contender a few years down the road. If Hillary is elected, Chelsea will have a role in the White House of some sort so she can be groomed to carry on the family legacy.
More power to her! The Clinton years were the most prosperous years of our Democracy and getting another chance (maybe two more) is just way too good to overlook or to turn down.

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-08-10 21:26:58

I hope Hillary is nominated, Chiten. We’ll just keep working to make that happen and to defeat Obama.

There’s a clip on YouTube from CNN of Barack Obama’s news conference I think the night that he won the U.S. Illinois Senate seat in 2004. He was asked by a reporter if he would run for President in 2008, and he stated that he wouldn’t be ready to run so soon:

I strongly believe he was offered ALOT by many Clinton haters with deep pockets to change his mind.

Look as Bill Clinton says politics is a contact sports. There are elbows to the ribs, knees to the groan and a forearm in the back. That is american politics.

So far Obama has avoided contact. He is instead to throw the ball in the middle and let the big men take the elbows and forearms while he lobs 3 pts from the NBA line. Well I woud imagine come September, the republicans are going to extend their defense out to three point line and hammer Mr. Obama. No more lobs untouched.

Funny how small a world it is, and Edwards quiting after SC, wonder why now, could it be due to the debates and his attacks on Barfy over his non-votes, thus Axelrod pulled the plug on Edwards?

Was Edwards, like Doyle an Axelrod plant to steer the elections for Barfy?

Was Edwards, like Doyle an Axelrod plant to steer the elections for Barfy?

Let’s see…didn’t Joe Trippi have something to do with Edwards’ campaign?

Didn’t Joe Trippi have some connection to Howard Dean in 2004?

Isn’t Howard Dean the one who was pushing so hard to oust HRC from the race earlier this year?

Connect the dots!

Comment by roseeriter | 2008-08-11 03:29:47

Sadly, too many people don’t KNOW HOW to connect the dots to see the whole picture. They have to have black and white proof and pooh pooh the HINTS/dots.

Not everyone’s brain is wired the same. And education and teachers of the past were better at getting students to figure some things out for themselves hence a lot of the ageism issues we’ve heard throughout this primary.

Once again, I agree with Larry. As a practising Catholic, I believe that the good Lord has big plans for Hillary. We just have to be patient and walk with her in her life journey - and wait for 2012. As for John Edwards and Barack Obama, their idolatrous worship of their egos will spell their ruin (or in the case of Edwards - has - past tense or at most, present progressive tense).

Maybe Edwards was used by bo’s campaign to weaken
HRC. A third party with similiar appeal to middle class blue collars takes her votes away from her until bo’s delegate count is up and then drops out.
Dare I say a little Chi town blackmail? Bo and axel knew about the affair, kept it quiet and used Edwards until it blew up. Edwards “endorsement” was used to upstage Hill’s WVa victory and take the emphasis off of bo’s losses. Evil deeds from them all.

Comment by rwc | 2008-08-10 19:13:39

Initially Edwards ran as a populist and pro-working class while Hillary ran a pro-corporate/centrist campaign that didn’t even bother to address the issues Edwards was.

And Hillary and her supporters NEVER understood the intense dislike of the Clintons that many Americans have, also in the Democratic party.

Then add in her stupid campaign manager Penn and his association with Blackwater and her inability for most of the campaign to address working class issues and you have another Gerraldine Ferraro.

Comment by Cinie | 2008-08-10 19:52:06

Americans don’t hate the Clintons, the press and the Dems do. Oh, and the Republicans. Big difference.

Comment by Gayle | 2008-08-10 20:18:12

Yeah, Hillary didn’t get the working class vote.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-08-10 20:38:27

Penn knew she would be attacked as being weak on national security like all Dems and especially as a woman, so he had her run as tough and inevitable. It didn’t pay off. Voters liked her as herself the more they got to know her throughout the primaries. She had to run as a pro-corporate centrist, if she was going to talk in the GE about how strong she was on the economy. Even though as a candidate, she had high name recognition going for her, her political record was not well-known to most Americans. Do you think Americans want to hear how much you hate the corporations at the same time you’re promising to bring jobs back?

That is not to say that I will ever forgiven him for what he did to Hillary. It was okay but his mistress is not? Seems soooo DNC-ish. Don’t cha think?

Poor Elizabeth. What a sick little puppy she married. To think that he ganged up with Obama to bring down Hillary while hiding this affair. You could tell that Elisabeth was for Hillary’s health plan but was hushed into obedience. This is misogyny’s ugly face, what a coward. Edwards let your wife say what she really thinks and stop controling her. Again your a coward!

If this ends up being posted twice, I apologize. I thought it was salient that EDWARDS’ comments about Bill Clinton get a fresh airing, seeing as he was so self-righteous about it a decade or so back.

http://projects.newsobserver.com/under_the_dome/john_edwards_in_1999

Here is Edwards on Clinton on Feb. 12, 1999:

I think this President has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the moral dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen.

Later, Edwards debated whether Clinton intended to obstruct justice when he talked with a White House employee:

We have a man who has just been confronted with this problem, who is political by nature. And do we really believe that the first thing he thought about is, “I’m going to go protect myself legally’”? I suspect the first thing he thought about is “I’m going to protect myself politically.” He was worried about his family finding out. He was worried about the rest of the staff finding out. He was worried about the press finding out.

I also saw a clip of him from Nov. 2007. The interviewer asked him if infidelity was fair to consider for a candidate. Very seriously, he replied: “Absolutely, because it tells you about a person’s character. If they cannot be trusted to keep a vow to their partner, then they cannot be trusted by the American people.” This was obviously AFTER his affair!

Like Obama, it’s not weakness per se, it is all about the HYPOCRISY!

Interesting how Edwards claimed to know exactly what Bill Clinton was thinking when he got caught. Maybe Edwards had already been down that road himself. It’s hard to believe this was Edward’s very first extramarital affair, or probably just the first time he was caught.

I had forgotten how ugly Edwards was in this primary. Thanks for this reprise of his ugliness. It certainly did not pay off for him but it paid well for Obama. Karma for John. Why do you think this whole story hit now? Makes it clear he is not going to be VP or have any role at the convention. Did Obama want to kill him off and got the msm to go with this story that they all knew? Anglachel is right: this is about male privilege and Elizabeth is not clean on this because she knew and she supported him in running a campaign they both knew was fatally flawed. And what about Joe Trippi in this? Wasn’t Axelrod at one time with Edwards? I am beginning to think that Democrats are just plain awful. Who is Obama going to have as a VP? Richardson—doesn’t he have issues with sexual harassment of women? Who is left? John Kerry? Claire McCaskill? No he needs someone for the male, white voter. Maybe he will just run by himself. Do you have to have a VP?

John Edwards is a dirty rat. He’s slippery and slick and he is truly narcissistic. Such a pretty boy that he thinks he is; cheating on his wife suffering with cancer, a death sentence. But he rationalizes poking his ho on the side b/c his wife was in remission? Come on, what a class-A jerkoff. Obama can have his pretty boy, they deserve each other. I want nothing to do with these two. And by the way, why did he go see his mistress without discussing with his wife beforehand? It doesn’t add up! I hated him on Niteline; such a prick that one!

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-08-10 20:58:38

Comment by Fenelon spoke | 2008-08-10 18:52:49

I realize that I may get blased to off the NQ website for this, but I was initially an Edwards supporter-even going to campaign for him in another state. I chose Edwards because I think he had a concern for the poor that the other candidates didn’t share. I think that despite his unethical and stupid choice to have have an affair, he’s a bright man with a a lot of good ideas about how government should work. I was quite upset that he endorsed Obama (which I still think was politically motivated by strong arming by the Obama campaign). I wish that he had stayed entirely neutral. Had Edwards not been in the race, I don’t know that that I would have supported Clinton although I think she is a a very bright woman with some excellent ideas. I might have supported Biden. I’m guessing people need to place blame on Edwards for Clinton not being the nominee, but I can’t go there. I did not suport any other candidate after Edwards withdrew until recently I supported Nader. I can’t vote for either McCain or Obama.

That being said I am a PUMA because I think Hillary was treated badly by the media; I think the DNC are a bunch of crooks, caucuses are corrupt, MI and Florida were handled undemocratically and Obama is a lying, manipulative, unethical product of the Chicago political machine. I would vote for Clinton should she end up as the nominee, but sadly
I don’t think it will happen. Too many people seem to dislike Clinton and their attitudes are often misogynistic and irrational to an extreme.

I would be glad if we could get off berating Edwards and concentrate on getting Hillary on the the ballot. I’d like to think that as a progressive Democrat I’d be welcome here and I have enjoyed many of the articles, have learned a lot and enjoy posting.

Comment by Fenelon spoke | 2008-08-10 18:57:17

Let me add that I am a Democrat in exile. I have voted Democratic since Carter ran the second time and am officially still one mostly because I haven’t yet registed “no choice”.

Comment by Chiten | 2008-08-10 22:03:51

We aren’t obamamaniacs, we don’t blast people for their choices if their choices are reasonable at the time they made them.
The only ones that get blasted are the obamatrolls who drank the kool-aid and refuse to see what is right before their own eyes.

Comment by Disgusted | 2008-08-10 19:09:35

I doubt that you will get blasted from NQ for supporting Edwards. I was never a big fan but to each their own. It seems as if a lot of people who were thought to be “good men” are showing their true colors. What a shame. However I do need to add that I can forgive Edwards for his adultry, but to cheat on his sick wife, while claiming to be the moral candidate is pretty low.

Comment by Fenelon spoke | 2008-08-10 19:23:13

I agree that cheating on his wife was really bad-as I said-but I don’t think Edwards was a plant by the DNC to siphon votes from Hillary-as several people suggested. I think he genuinely decided that he wanted to run because he thought he’d be a good President and because of ego, but I think all politicians have a lot of ego.

But the more I see of Obama, the more I fear for my country should he become President. Too bad most Americans are very uninformed voters and don’t vote on anything butsoundbyte ads.. I guess that should Obama become the nominee the election will depend on who has the better ads and who can cheat the most. :^(

Comment by rwc | 2008-08-10 19:35:00

Whats so amusing you have all the Hillary supporters saying how strong and popular Hilldog was, yet they now claim it was that horrible John Edwards who couldn’t win a single state that destroyed her campaign.

Its pathetic and desperate.

What the Hill worshipers don’t get is that all politicos are frauds and hypocrites to some extent. This is why most Americans are sick of politics and don’t vote.

This doubly applies to the Clintons when you see their negatives.

Comment by Marjorie | 2008-08-10 21:02:34

I know a woman from Florida who tells me Hillary will never win because of her “negatives.” I had no idea what she meant until I read “Hillary’s negatives” were a Republican talking point w/o actually identifying any negatives [unless one was her "terrible lie" re: machine gun fire].

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-08-10 21:04:33

It turns out he ran with this scandal in the offing, and that was an incredibly stupid mistake. It turns out he didn’t care about the poor, if he would take people’s money and pay his baby mama off.

Comment by Zee | 2008-08-10 22:43:25

I don’t believe people here blast others with no reason. I, too, was an early Edwards supporter and went to NH to campaign for him (from Mass). I decided on him from observations I made suring the 2004 campaign.

But then I watched the NH debate with my son and was HORRIFIED at how Edwards and Obama ganged up on Hillary. I thought that was a huge mistake on Obama’s part…little did I know it might’ve been intentional.

Then, when I went to NH, I was further mystified and horrified. Nothing I saw on the ground, door to door, justified either the Edwards camp or the MSM conclusions. The people there, especially the women, simply loved Hillary and were so excited for her. Everyone who was for the RP cult or Obama cult were imported. The people on the street and in the homes who were from NH were for Hillary.

Even at my hotel, I was shocked at the depth of the Hillary support.

One young woman and her partner came from California to help Hillary! Another woman…a black woman in her 90’s from Harlem, had her son bring her up to meet and help Hillary.

My eyes were opened.

Only the morons at the DNC could have taken a sure thing and given the white house back to the repubs..

This whole thing was set in motion by the repubs. And the DNC are clueless that they have been played by the repubs. I think that the Obama people know some of this — or something along these lines — to be true, but they are hoping to deal with it after the convention and hoping Barry’s nominated.

As Larry Johnson said last night, the GOP has the goods. But they don’t want to spill the beans until after Barry is nominated.

Texas Darlin is connecting the dots not, when Hillary can be nominated, and that is sending ‘bot nation into convulsions.

You can be sure of this: Texas Darlin will get the story out, both on her own site, here at NQ and many other spots.

The genie isn’t going back into the bottle here. The word is out, and the Dem Party is warned that they are walking into a trap by nominating this man.

angry artist, on August 10th, 2008 at 6:49 pm Said:
I just spoke with my cousin who attended a Hillary fundraiser (to settle her debt) here in east hampton. I am glad I didn’t cough up the $250 minimum needed to attend. Most people left angry.
My cousin’s description….There were about 100 people there. After waiting 90 minutes in the heat with no chairs,, Hillary arrived and spoke for about 4 minutes. she said its over…he won fair and square yada, yada, yada. People asked all the questions we would have asked…..the PUMAs were raised….the convention was raised…..a third party. there was almost no applause when she said we should all support Obama. People actually shouted NO when she said it was fair and square.
At the end, Hillary said she would like to speak briefly with everyone and went off to the side and my cousin said that most…probably 70 out of 100 people turned and left.
My cousin also said that during the 90 minutes while they waited, most people said they would not vote Obama…they would either stay home or vote McCain.

I knew this would happen. Hillary does not understand that she is the one who really has a lasting, serious, movement, not Obama. I knew she would not get this even though I wrote her these words and sent her a debt reduction donation. She still does not understand that even though the Republicans crossed over to vote for Obama, the Clinton haters and far left-winged democrats voted for him, she still got the majority of the “true democratic vote”. At the convention, if the superdelegates vote as the people in their states voted and the MI and FL fiasco are reversed she wins. If she caves in to Obama at this point she will lose the respect of her supporters, forever because we thought we had a fighter.

Hate to sound morbid but, the real turn coats are dropping like flys. Kennedy turned against the will of his own state and endorsed Obama. And lets not forget the worst one of all, the one that white women supported, made famous and rich, Oprah. I am a firm believer of karma.

Boy I could not agree more. I was never an Edwards fan (I am not much on populism), but after his “performance” against Cheney in the 04 debates, I was particularly incensed. Why he didn’t nail Cheney when he specifically said something that was not true, left me thinking that there was more to the tale than met the eye.

After Hillary got nailed by some feminists for staying with Bill, I would like to ask them what they think now. Obviously Elizabeth knew about it before he decided to run so that kind of makes her a liar too.

Comment by cplummer | 2008-08-11 00:29:19

That’s what I’ve been wondering too. All these anti-HRC people are constantly berating Hillary for staying with Bill saying she hungers for power, wants to ride in on his coattails so she couldn’t leave him. Seems to be some double-standards here…always where Hillary is concerned.

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-08-11 00:36:47

One of the most ironic things is, liberals are proud to announce that the lowest divorce rates are in liberal Massachusetts and the highest are in the southern red states…but Hillary is anti-feminest for working it out with her husband…perhaps she should’ve acted like a red neck conservative and dumped Bill.

Anyone remember that “plant” story which Edwards exploited to the maximum against Hillary to the extent of setting up the website mocking her ? Or the Philly debate last Oct when he launched the most ugly, personal attacks showing visible disdain and contempt for her ? Like how he savaged her on that IRG vote saying that he had “heard” she was in the GE mode and why was she not being in the “truth telling” mode ?!! F’ing hypocrite.. makes me mad when I think about those days especially how he did the max to help Obama against her in Iowa.

Chicagoans Against Obama have uncovered another example of his ‘good judgment’. Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, whom Obama endorsed in 2007, spent the night in jail last Thursday. The judge revoked his bond and suspended all travel.

The hits just keep on coming.

Sam Stein strips Edwards bare in this Huff Post article. Stein thinks Edwards may have been paying Hunter out of contributed funds for a project that was merely a cover for his affair.

Comment by ritamary | 2008-08-10 21:29:03

Here is a quote from Stein’s piece.

In the context of admitting to an affair, it may seem innocent for Edwards to have misled ABC about the starting point. But the precise date is important. Over the course of nine months Edwards would spend more than $114,000 of the One America Committee’s budget on Hunter’s films. Whether he did that in an effort to have Hunter around or as a legitimate documentary project would likely make a difference to those who thought they were contributing to a poverty-eradication effort.

For that kind of money, I’d have demanded a better quality of Goods; particularly one who understood Contraception.

Lawyers generally don’t have, “affairs.” They just knock off some Strange.

Had an interesting bit of fluff pull that crap on me in 1985, thinking that, because my family had a little money and were all Pillars of Rectitude the checkbook would magically open up.

I told her to, “F*****g Sue Me.”

She got her mouth a little sideways in a couple of public places in a small town, so I sued HER.

That cut THAT shit right out.

I got a $150K judgment, which I can wipe myself with (she took Bankruptcy) but, after I made the DNA test semi-public, she found the need for a Husband who, “SURPRISE!” was actually Little Mongo’s sire.

When last seen, they were living in blissful, screaming, yelling, cops-know-the-address White Trash Nirvana in Tornado Magnet Trailer Park.

And, every year on my birthday, I renew that judgment so that the whore can’t borrow bus fare.

The trashy wives don’t stay wives for long. If you want a marriage, a wife who is pure as the driven snow generally work out better.

Men are not always so clear-sighted, either. Didn’t Elizabeth get cancer from fertility drugs, because John wanted a “new family”? They lost their son. She couldn’t have more children. Then here comes the “documentary filmmaker” who thinks he can really win, and he’s the most fascinating man she’s ever met, and she loves him for him. Maybe she was telling him she was open to a family, was so discreet and trustworthy, could wait till Elizabeth died and would hold his hand through it. Maybe John Edwards was that dumb.

Comment by roseeriter | 2008-08-11 04:16:38

Hunter is also not working and living in a 2 or 3 million dollar home that SOMEBODY got for her.

SOMEONE has to be pretty wealthy to pay that kind of HUSH MONEY so I doubt its Edwards campaign aide’s child.

Comment by John | 2008-08-10 19:21:20

Elizabeth Edwards is just as dirty in this as her fruadulent excuse for a husband.

Comment by Kathleen | 2008-08-10 20:12:11

John,

Before you go attacking Elizabeth, I think it fair to take into consideration her situation. We don’t know every detail about her illness and when Edwards told her about his affair and what exactly he told her at the time. Edwards has proven to be a shameless lier and I’d bet he’s not been totally forthcoming with Elizabeth. After all, he said the affair was short-term and ended in 2006, but he was caught a couple of weeks ago with the woman at that hotel. Do you think he told Elizabeth that he was going there to meet her to convince her, as he said in the interview, to remain quiet about the affair?

Then you add to this tragic situation the fact that she’s dying and has two young children she must think about and who will need their father greatly when she is gone, I have to ask how can you find fault with this, based on what you know?

From what I’ve seen of Elizabeth Edwards, I respect her and believe she would put the best interests of her children ahead of her own and probably has been supportive of Edwards because she doesn’t want her children to hate him, because he’s going to be their primary care giver when she’s gone.

No matter what the circumstances, why is it that men always find a way to put some kind of blame on the wife? Even Edwards, himself, claimed that he told Elizabeth not to appear with him in that ABC interview because he needed to face this alone and take full responsibility for his actions and that she had done nothing wrong. That was the only unselfish thing Edwards has done for Elizabeth in this whole sordid affair.

Elizabeth does not deserve to be tainted because of her husband’s actions.

Comment by Gayle | 2008-08-10 20:31:40

Don’t forget why she’s dying of cancer. She took those monstrous fertility (estrogen)shots because HE wanted to start a new family.

What a scumbag he is.

Comment by Dee | 2008-08-10 21:23:26

Elizabeth is just as responsible as John.

Elizabeth is a snarky moral high-grounder. Have you forgotten that she trashed Theresa H. Kerry in her book and then insulted Hillary in an interview and had to call and apologize? Hillary took the call. I would not have…

Hillary is a better person than I am.

Sadly, Elizabeth is no better than her husband. Both hypocrites. Both think they are better than other folk.

Why Edwards is really in trouble…It’s the money, stupid.

Simple. It’s the money, stupid. He could be in some serious criminal trouble for running afoul of tax and campaign finance laws. This could also explain why his dying wife is continuing to support him as well - she is concerned about who would raise their two small children if she’s dead and Edwards is in prison.
There’s a lot of talk about Fred Baron paying $15,000 per month to Hunter and $20,000 to Young “out of his own money.” Don’t we all wish we had friends like that? Even better if those friends were powerful trial lawyers with a private jet we get to borrow! There’s even more to this tale than Baron’s payouts, though.

Comment by Faustina | 2008-08-10 20:14:50

If the Obama campaign infiltrated the Clinton campaign via Patti Solis-Doyle, then it isn’t unreasonable to think his campaign either was in collusion with Edwards from the start or that they infiltrated his campaign in some way also.

If two people are partners in crime, don’t they each want to protect themselves by having some incriminating evidence on the other. At least that is what Hollywood and the writers of suspense fiction have taught us. So you may be right about the tax and campaign laws. Edwards has more to lose by telling us what he knows than by keeping his mouth shut.

Somebody probably clued in the National Enquirer on Edwards whereabouts the night he was caught in LA. Was it the Obama people or the Clinton people?

Such intrigue!

WAKE UP SUPERDELEGATES!

Comment by Charles Lemos | 2008-08-10 19:27:07

Not to rain on your parade, but the facts are otherwise. Edwards attacked Obama as well. This is just showing one side of the attacks in a hotly contested primary race.

Next, when Obama ran his “sinverguenza” radio ad in Nevada. Sinverguenza translates as shameless but in the Hispanic cultural context when said to a woman it means “fucking whore.” Sinverguenza is a sexual slur. It was Edwards who came to Clinton’s defence and called Obama’s irresponsible and reprehensible.

After the South Carolina debate, Clinton and Edwards left Obama on stage and when to powwow privately for 30 minutes.

And the story was known in December 2007. It was known in October 2007. Furthermore, 2/3 of Edwards supporters went for Obama. I was part of the smaller group that came over to Hillary. You have to remember that before Hillary found her voice, there was a large ANYBODY BUT CLINTON group. I know I was one of that group but as I found Obama repulsive and I listened to Hillary I discovered a gem of a person. Hillary’s problem to be frank is that she ran a lousy campaign until February. Mark Penn and Patty Solis were the problem, not John Edwards.

Comment by Fenelon spoke | 2008-08-10 19:39:37

Comment by Michael | 2008-08-10 19:29:48

Charles,
I agree with your point. However, I cannot stand Edwards because he chose to run in the primary knowing full well that his lying/cheating was eventually going to be a problem. If he had not run, Hillary would have won IOWA, and it would have been a completely different ball game. Edwards is obviously just another ego-maniac hypocrit just like Obama.

Comment by stingy | 2008-08-10 19:30:26

I actually think that whomever forced Edwards out hurt Hillary alot. Remember that Hillary was running ahead of both Edwards and Obama while Edwards was in the race. The vote was being split.

If Edwards had stayed in Hillary would have gotten the nomination because she would have kept beating both Edwards and Obama.

I disagree. Hillary and Edwards split the white/blue collar vote in IOWA allowing BHO to win. If Edwards would NOT have run, Hillary would have gotten much more of the vote, and would have beat BHO. (this is just my opinion of course) :=)

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-08-10 19:39:27

Totally agree. Without Edwards splitting the white working class vote, Hillary mops up BaJoke in Iowa.

It was thought this was the case but poo-pooed by some Obama fawning media, that HRC and JRE essentially had the same base.

After New Hampshire and beyond, the fact was demonstrated repeatedly and near-unanimously except for, I believe, Wisconsin.

And that was before the Jeremiah Wright story hit the press.

If asshat narcissist Edwards doesn’t enter the race, Hillary is today the nominee.

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-08-10 19:35:44

This has likely been said above but I will repeat it here.

It has been rumored, strongly, that it was Obama’s camp that floated the story of Edwards’ affair before the Iowa caucus because they were afraid of Edwards’ surge and knew they could not afford to lose the caucus to him.

Second, and related, it is also thought that Edwards was explicitly threatened again with the story by Obama’s team after he dropped out of the contest and this is why he came out in support of Obama after Clinton destroyed Obama in the West Virginia primary. Even if the Obama camp did not explicitly do this, had Edwards known that it was Obama’s team that supposedly floated the story in Iowa then Edwards would have realized that the faster he jumped on Obama’s bandwagon the less inclination the Obama team would have to keep fanning the love child story to the press if it was they who did so in the first place.

The Axelrodians are the kings of the oppo dump. The rumor is that the pending Atlantic Monthly story about the Clinton Camp’s internal memos came from none other than Judas II, Patti Solis-Doyle. And, maybe two weeks ago, the Axelrodians gave the LA Times a served-up piece on McCain and his ex-wife, as well as information about how Reagan and McCain didn’t get along, etc.

This is what the Chicagoans are about. This is who they are. This is the essence of Barack Daley Wright Obama.

It’s Alice Palmer all over again.

Comment by Fenelon spoke | 2008-08-10 19:43:21

I just keep wondering if Obama or someone in Obama’s campaign knew and used it to get Edwards on his side.

It’s very possible that the obama camp had knowledge of Edward’s liaison and is why Edwards was forced to endorse him when he did. Once they had no further use of Edwards, it was the obama camp who tipped off the Enquirer that Edwards was going to be at the Beverly Hilton hotel on that particular night.

Also, I have no doubt that Hillary knows she has to give her complete support to obama — one, because she said she would “work her heart out for the democratic nominee” and because she has been threatened in some way to “toe the line”, if she doesn’t want even more attacks heaped upon her by the MSM and the pro-obama blogs.

On the other hand, has anyone considered the possibility that Hillary knows something about obama that we don’t, which will come out during the GE that could literally take him out of the race? There also seems to be rising support for her to be picked as BO’s VP because it’s becoming clearer and clearer that he is in big trouble and McCain could very well win this thing. So, for political expediency (which is obama’s middle name), he does end up choosing Hillary and then when the truth of his inelligibility or some other scandal finally surfaces, Hillary steps in.

All I know is this election season has been chocked full of the most inexplicable political strategies and tactics that I’ve ever seen in any other national election and I just can’t believe that Hillary and Bill have just given up.

It just doesn’t make sense.

Thank you Teakwoodkite, I have that video and truly love it. When I heard the version with Eric Clapton and the other with all the Beatles, I wasn’t impressed. But there is something so poignant about this one.

Elizabeth Edward’s deserves a pretty big helping of blame over this fiasco, sorry to say. She knew about the affair before he decided to run. She knew John’s holier-than-thou speech about Bill. She knew if it came out, it wouldn’t just destroy her husband’s political career but also be a very damaging blow to important political causes. She also knew Hillary had the best plan for healthcare in this country. But she didn’t like Hillary so she kept back her endorsement when it would have done some real good for their shared cause. The sad thing really is, she apparently liked Obama even less.
The Edward’s have paid a pretty high price for their shared stupidity. But it is Shared, they both carry the blame.
There comes a time when political gamesmanship must end, and you must just plain do the right thing. Neither John nor Elizabeth recognized that moment. Too bad for all of us.

It’s to Hillary’s credit that she undoubtedly knew
all his dirt, and never said a word.

Could you imagine how Edwards would have gone in if the situation had been reversed?

Someone here need to reach out to her and make sure everything is ok and help her get back online!

Texas Darlin is mentioned here–
canonfire. blogspot. com

This was the detractor who posted on the COB thread. Does Techdude have a website?

Seriously–I’m wondering what is going on as it seems that her site has been hacked to act so strangely. It’s also curious that so many people are posting whose names I don’t recognize. Some have said Cannon is a troll?
Any clues, Northwest rain?

Comment by Northwest rain | 2008-08-10 22:09:33

I’ve also seen references to Cannon as a troll — and he fits the bill — having threatened TD with exposure — this is what the Obamabots do.

Thankfully TD is back — no mention of the down time.

Riverdaughter just posted that someone was missing — and this individual has had threatening calls to her cell phone.

It might be a good idea to have a support network — watching each other’s backs.

SusanUNpc — had personal information posted on a thread by a troll — and the nasty person was threating ALL who were condemning the troll’s actions. (it was removed) —

Obamabot trolls are thugs — I’ve seen these creeps in the caucus — they are dangerous. One male Obamabot was literally shaking in rage as he spoke about Hillary Clinton (lies he told). Some of these trolls can be very dangerous.

Very few disputes with thugs resist solution by the application of a small cylinder of non-ferrous metal.

Edwards is a scumbag and I agree he is lying about not being the father of the baby. I will believe he is not the father when a DNA test says he is not. The mother is saying she will never allow a DNA test because it is an invasion of privacy. How convenient.

Comment by Jeremiah God Damn Amerikkka Wright | 2008-08-11 02:25:28

Probably part of the private agreement she signed with that finance guy for Edwards Campaign. They knew they couldnt keep the lid on the affair but they also know that she can prevent dna testing and made her agree to that for the monthly money she gets for letting Pretty Boy John My Wife has Cancer so i am going to go pork someone else Edwards stick it to her.

Comment by Jeremiah God Damn Amerikkka Wright | 2008-08-11 02:27:58

Obama promised Edwards that he would make sure his buddies in the Main Stream Media would avoid discussing the affair and his little rugrat in exchange for his endorsement. And that by the time the election was over people would forget and he would make John Auttorney General or if nothing his shoe shine boy at the whitey house.

At about 5 this evening I received an alert from my computer security that they had just blocked a hacker who had tried to access my computer three times in a ten minute period. They apparently recognized the person, and prevented it. The thing is, I had posted on TD for the first time, since I’m more of a lurker than a poster, but I wanted to thank her for all she has done. She had just posted that she was being harrassed, and she was waiting to post something new from Judah Benjamin. I’m new to this, having just got my computer from my son for Mother’s Day and I’m beginning to be afraid.

OMG! Hilarious, he SHOULD shave his stupid head. The man is so incredibly vain. I always suspected he was a phony.

Seriously, any woman he sleeps with probably has to reassure him 20 times over that he was “just excellent in bed.”

I wonder how long it took him to try and mimic the Kennedys, and I wonder how long it will haunt him that he failed at it.

Is that the norm to have the wife of the nominee making a speech and the convention? Why would anyone be interested in what Michelle has to say?

She is not a public official, she is not a candidate, she has never held office or any official position in the democrat party so why the hell is she speaking at the convention?

If Obama becomes President is Michelle going to be making daily speeches to the public, man this democrat party sucks big time, I really don’t understand how some of these people can sit there and take all this shit and not say a word, they dam well know Michelle Obama has no place in speaking at the convention so why sit quiet and not say something.

These democrats are all a bunch of weak, spineless individuals that seems to be so caught up in holding on to office they cant stand up for what is right anymore its truly disgusting.

Edward’s punishment will also include at least 18 years of child support, and who knows, maybe his partner in crime has the whole affair on video…it was her line of work. Bet he’s got years of sleepless nights coming.

May I suggest to avoid unnecessary comments on Elizabeth Edwards, please?
I think it must be stressful and scary enough for her to deal with a recurrent serious disease, and to think about the future of her young children. For now let her and John figure out their own relationship, mainly for their children’s sake.
Just hope that if John opens his mouth to say anything, it will be for the good of Democracy in our country. I don’t want to hear any self serving preaching from him anymore.
Thank you.

Jesus Christ this moderating is driving me nuts!

Comment by Susan Nunes | 2008-08-10 23:40:49

Sorry, Larry, but your post is a total crock. Hillary Clinton’s campaign ran on inevitability, and she was vulnerable to be taken down. The truth is, as much as many Clinton supporters may deny it, she probably couldn’t have won the general election against McCain. There were real constitutional issues at work when she was the wife of a term-limited ex-president. No, this isn’t sexist; the same argument would be made if the situation were reversed. And yes, Edwards’ critiques were right about her own shortcomings on policy. It’s called politics, and as somebody who has been in the identical situation as Elizabeth, she is far more sympathetic to their situation than people like you.

So shitting all over Edwards because he made a mistake in not coming forward about the Hunter affair at the beginning of the campaign doesn’t address the real issue here, and that is the likely possibility Obama’s campaign was involved in Edwards being forced out in January. Whining about Hillary being “beating upon” doesn’t explain crap. The issue is our choices were taken from us, and by unscrupulous means.

I get SO sick of people who are so emotionally invested in their candidate they can’t see what in the hell happened in this primary.

Comment by The Real Hope | 2008-08-10 23:44:00

You sound like an abused woman.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-10 23:45:05

Comment by bmc | 2008-08-11 07:02:56

Under what logic could anyone possibly argue that Hillary Clinton couldn’t have won the general election!? Even with Edwards running the interference for Obama in a classic squeeze play, Hillary Clinton won a majority of Democratic primary votes, and most of the major states’ primaries. Clinton still beats McCain in polling by a wider margin than Obama in the general, and she’s not even running!

Susan Nunes, your argument is pathetic and laughable. Larry’s right: Edwards clearly hurt Hillary Clinton’s candidacy; but he also hurt the Democratic Party. I was an Edwards supporter in the beginning; but Clinton won my respect and my vote, just as she did for the majority of Democrats in the primary. Now, John Edwards has my deepest contempt.

Comment by Ferdberfle | 2008-08-11 07:06:40

Comment by norrismorris | 2008-08-11 15:00:13

Edwards is Swamp Scum. His sexist remark about not liking the color of Hillary’s jacket [made in early debate] showed me what this guy was about.

Forget Hillary. Edwards is a man of terrible judgement and risky behavior that oozes self love and contempt for others.

In fact he’s indefensible on all counts, and certainly transcends sex. Judgement? Nil.

Comment by jrterrier | 2008-08-10 23:43:41

And don’t forget, he used Elizabeth to attack Hillary, too. I remember being stunned at how hard Elizabeth was going after Hillary and thinking it was dastardly of Edwards to use his wife in that fashion. Little did I know the other shoe had not yet dropped.

Comment by Smilin' Jim | 2008-08-11 00:25:28

So what? He was running for President against an opponent that at the time was considered invincible. He didn’t do any worse than Gene McCarthy did to Johnson in 1968 and far less than Teddy Kennedy did to Carter in 1980. Remember that debate when ALL the men jumped on Clinton over that stupid fucking driver’s license thing? This is a game that deals in body blows.

Use your goddamn training, Johnson.

Think WHY NOW?

Did corporate plutocracy want to head off another Bobby Kennedy as AG? He was preaching criminal conspiracy on the part of corporate medicine and that someone was going to do hard time..

Was he the great white hope for Obama, the last chance to suck up the votes of all us gun-totin’, snake-handlin’ shit-kickers? The Guardian, at least, thinks that is a real problem. Now who, pray tell would like to head that off?

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-11 00:30:01

We don’t know what John Edwards was thinking. But how many choices do we have? Either he was completely delusional running for president with a fresh affair hanging over his head thinking that it would never be found out or he didn’t care because he had another job to do and getting the Nom wasn’t it.
