The Obama Doctrine

He’s Willing to be Putin’s Pigeon

So He Can Go Body Surfing

On the day after Russia invaded Georgia, Barack Obama urged even-handed “restraint” on both sides without mentioning Russia by name or rebuking its aggression. Thus Obama proposed his “Rodney King Doctrine,” after the African-American taxi driver, beaten by Los Angeles policemen in 1991, who plaintively asked, “Can we all get along?” The acquittal of the police in 1992 triggered the LA riots.

The Russians took the Obama Doctrine as another green light—not just for their attack but also for extending their power in the foreseeable future under a potential Obama administration.

clip_image001.jpgHaving dealt with the pesky issue of war, Obama turned to the more pressing matter of his Hawaiian vacation. His statement about his day in paradise was more focused than his statement on the Russian invasion.

Here’s what was on Obama’s mind as the Russian army plunged deep into the heart of the Georgian democracy and bombed civilians:

“I’m going to get a plate lunch. I might go to Zippy’s. I might go to Rainbow Drive-In. I haven’t decided yet. Get some Zip Min. I’m going to go get some shave ice. I’m going to go body surfing at an undisclosed location. I’m going to see my tutu — my grandma — and I’m going to watch my girls play on the beach, and once in a while I might go into the water. But mostly I’m going to watch them.”

Then, the New Decider made a decision. He announced he was going “to go body surfing at some undisclosed location.”

That inspirational, transformational, post-partisan, post-racial statement had an inspirational effect on the Russians. They were further inspired to ramp up their military offensive and encouraged that “citizen of the world” Obama was just the man for Putin to man-handle in years to come.

John McCain has had Vladimir Putin ‘nailed’ for nearly a decade. He sees the burgeoning of the new Russian ‘bloc’ party and has been adamant from the moment this happened that Russian must STAND DOWN. Obama once again is exposed as a child among men.

America must elect a proven leader as its next president. Here’s hoping the Kool Aid wears off…

Take care,

Well, the man IS on vacation. You can’t expect him to deal with the little inconveniences of being presumptuous Leader of the Free World when there is body-surfing to do, and shaved ice to be consumed.

Not to worry. Once he is elected, The Messiah will mandate that nothing bad can happen in the world while he’s “at rest.” Adoring crowds will cheer. Women will weep. Children will play on the beach.

Sheesh–and they had the unmitigated nerve to ridicule Hillary’s “3 a.m. call” ad.

I knew this from the start when he declared his “unconditional” willingness to speak to world leaders, including hostile regimes. He has NO CLUE re: the potential dangers of foreign policy, and the critical role of appearance. JFK said that foreign policy was 75% appearance. That’s why Hillary’s emphasis on carrots & sticks (strong statements and accountable actions by opponents to evaluate their intentions) is exactly right. He is extremely naive, and it puts us all in danger. That in itself is a key reason not to support him. I have never voted Republican in my life, but I trust McCain to keep us safe. I cannot say the same for this self-absorbed body surfer.

Comment by JML | 2008-08-12 12:10:03

I agree. That statement of his was my first clue — back when I was still open to a number of the Democratic candidates — that Barack Obama is a newb who has no idea what “being president” really requires.

And it turned me against him. Not because I disagree with negotiation with foreign leaders, but because I realized this guy was naive in the worst way: the arrogant kind.

You can bet your ass that if Obama wins in November, he will be tested right out of the box by Putin/Medvedev in the same way that Kruschev tested Kennedy back in the early 1960s. The difference between then and now is that Kennedy had balls. Obama doesn’t.

Comment by AnnieCarmel | 2008-08-12 15:10:09

Yes he did but the reason we got into trouble was Kruschev’s thinking that Kennedy was weak. He soon found out otherwise but he really thought Kennedy would wimp out. Putin will definitely see Obama the same way…difference being that Obama will beg for Kumbayah talks.

Russia orders halt to war, Georgia sceptical
Reuters - 1 hour ago
By Oleg Shchedrov and Margarita Antidze MOSCOW/TBILISI, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered a halt to military operations in Georgia on Tuesday but Tbilisi cast doubt on the announcement, saying Moscow was still bombing towns

There is no cease fire. Don’t make up things.

As for the candidates, this is a good test. We want to hear their reaction to a world crisis. Don’t forget they are also speaking as elected officials.

Comment by Morgan | 2008-08-12 13:05:48

It doesn’t matter who the president is, Obama hopes to be, and if he is clueless he should stick to his plate lunch and shut his yap. Claiming that Russia’s actions don’t live up to the Olympic ideal, and suggesting the UN issue a condemnation from the Security Council, where Russia can just issue a veto, points out how inept and unqualified he is to comment on anything approaching importance. He didn’t have to solve this, but his comments should give anyone enough pause to stay well clear. If you don’t mind a president that doesn’t even know who is on the UNSC, then vote your heart, with my blessing.

Yes, you are missing something here. The Russians, in calculating how far they can take things, are, of course, watching the reactions not only of the lame-duck US president, but by his likely successor.

Obama needs to be clear how he would act if he were to become president, and send clear signals about this to the Russians. If Obama (or rather, whichever of the Obama cabal is reigning supreme at the moment) intends to force the Russians to cease their incursions he should say so.

His ‘Mars Attacks’ ‘Why-can’t-we-just-all-get-along?’ type of statement is most unhelpful, and is tantamount to giving the Russians carte-blanche to do as they wish.

Comment by Lorie | 2008-08-12 13:23:16

Yo, hot green, yes there is a provisional cease fire, but Russia is IGNORANT IT thus there is no cease fire. The Georgian president said and I quote, diplomacy is not working here!

Your an idiot and you are an embarrassment to our intelligence so you better prey he doesn’t get elected because if he does this is exactly the kind of stuff that is going to happen in your own back yard!

here is a quote from CNN, I did not use Fox, because you would think they were racist or something stupid like that.

“Medvedev said earlier that he had ordered an end to military operations against Georgia, but Tbilisi reported more attacks after the statement was made.”

So I bet you are just counting the days until your chosen one takes a vacation while this is happening right here in our country right.

McCain, hopefully, has more sense than warmongering idiot Bush. But Sen. McCain must engage Russia too and not allow the N.Y.-trained lawyer Georgia presidnet Saakolovish Mikheil to antagonize the Russians in their own backyard!
What did the Georgia unbaked, immature president want to prove by invading the 2 regions? his own country people are heavily critizing Georgia’s Obama-like inexperienced president who started this mess to begin with–giving a great opportunity for an already expansionist Russian to bring in the troops….

Hillary back in March had advised Bush to develop a prudent policy for Georgia to be eventually enveloped in NATO….Bush The Moron didn’t listen, to his detriment. Now we have Obama, another Moron, or I should say “BUSH-LITE” and god help us.

lets hope McCain at least appreciates the grave danger and walks the middle road and not try to outdo the Ruskies in his “tough talk” that led to Iraq in Dubya Moron Junior’s case!

We need a pragmatic, experienced, diplomatic and tough Leader–Unfortunately Sen. Hillary’s nomination was stolen by the Obama DNC thugs, just like he stole the election from AA Sen. alice Palmer in ‘96 in Chicago’s political sewers…

I’d say we’re screwed for another 4 years…let’s hope it’s Bush-lite under McCain. As for Obama Presidency….God and Prayer may help us in the other world….

Comment by Mary | 2008-08-12 11:43:59

You know, Larry, I appreciate your critique of Obama. I’m not going to vote for him, based on his inexperience.

But I don’t agree about Georgia. The initial invasion was Georgia into S.Ossetia, killing 2000 civilians and wiping out 10 Ossetian villages.

I’m reading in the international press that the Georgian military was being trained and advised by Israeli military officers, and that the Bush administration gave Georgia $40 million to beef up their military with high-tech weapons shipped by Israel.

While I appreciate your post is about bashing Obama’s handling of the issues….and with that, I agree….

I don’t agree with blaming this on Russia.

Saakishvili’s aggression, under cover of the Olympics, was quite stupid and irrational.

NATO should never admit such a hot head into its organization.

And that’s all I’m gonna say. :)

Comment by Patrick | 2008-08-12 11:50:44

Mary, you are correct that Georgia did indeed make the first ‘physical’ strike, but only because of what Moscow had been doing and fostering in Ossetia for years now. Was Georgia’s response to Moscow’s antics out of line? From a humanitarian stand-point, yes. But the question begs: If, let’s say, Iran was fostering the succession of Maine, what would we do? I know, very hypothetical and a stretch of an analogy, but that’s kind of how I see Georgia’s stance on this. Anyway, not trying to start a flame war and I hope this comes off as a respectful response.

Take care,
Patrick

Comment by LDW | 2008-08-12 13:24:21

Patrick, I am sure you meant to say, “let’s say, Iran was fostering the succession of GEORGIA, what would we do?”

Comment by steven Mather | 2008-08-12 11:53:32

Dear Mary,

When analyzing events, it is important to look at their historical context. While it is true that the Georgians moved their troops into the breakaway territory, it must be appreciated that this action took place after a long series of provocations by the Russians. For example, the Russians gave the South Ossetians Russian passports. The Russian’s baited the Georgians. The Georgians refused lots of bait before they bit. The point to take here is that it is wrong to assume that the event started with the Georgian action in South Ossetia.

SM

Comment by Mary | 2008-08-12 12:33:33

From today’s McClatchy newspapers (the only paper that had true facts about the invasion of Iraq):

“Bush administration officials, worried by what they saw as a series of provocative Russian actions, WARNED Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili to avoid giving the Kremlin an excuse to intervene in his country militarily, US officials said Monday.

But in the end, the warnings failed to stop the Georgian president–a Bush favorite—from launching an attack last week…”

This CLEARLY shows that Saakashvili was warned NOT to do what he did, and that he initiated the action, against the advice of US officials.

A hothead like this should never be allowed entry into NATO.

Comment by TeaMug | 2008-08-12 12:59:19

Mary.

I actually agree with you in what you say.

To be honest with you all I trust the Russian government than the USA government. Bush is only interest in oil and military gains. Matter of fact with all the money Bush has bought Georgia with billions of dollars.

I am getting really tired and pissed off the way Bush&Co are hell bent in invading other country’s, Whether it be through war, blood money. America is the axil of evil in this world no thanks to Bush&Co.

Russia respects strong leaders. Obama is not strong at all. Russia will walk right over Obama. McCain would be able to make constructive dialogue, because he knows the history of Russia. Hillary would be the same. It is so important to elect a strong leader. I for one am glad Putin is around. I am getting really pissed off that America thinks it rules the world we all live in.

The world needs Putin..he is the peace maker, strange though it sounds. He won’t put up with any of Bush&Co bullshit.

Comment by RunningDogLackey | 2008-08-12 12:25:23

It was stupid of Georgia to act in a way that gave even a fig-leaf of legitimacy to Putin’s response. They should have kept cool until they had NATO membership. On ABC’s “This Week,” Richardson, auditioning to be Barack Obama’s running mate, disqualified himself. Clinging to the Obama campaign’s talking points like a drunk to a lamppost, Richardson said this crisis proves the wisdom of Obama’s zest for diplomacy, and that America should get the U.N. Security Council “to pass a strong resolution getting the Russians to show some restraint.” Apparently Richardson was ambassador to the U.N. for 19 months without noticing that Russia has a Security Council veto.

Exactly! John McCain has 9 million-dollar homes he can take naps in all over America! For him, the Western White House can be any room with a TV tray and a heated throw-blanket. He is a man of the people! And Cindy gives him an allowance, so he can be his OWN MAN, not a puppet like Obama.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-08-12 12:45:21

Comment by M. N. | 2008-08-12 11:58:27

So, what exactly do you expect of Obama? Canceling his vacation and returning to Washington would probably not accomplish anything (candidate though he may be, he’s still just a junior senator), and as recent events have shown, the situation in the Caucasus appears to have escaped the control of most (if not all) of the world’s most prominent and powerful leaders. Putin is clearly in the driver’s seat, and as a rather well-known Soviet hand said some time back (name withheld for reasons of confidentiality), he doesn’t give a rats ass what the world thinks of the action.

Really, this kind of commentary is immensely hypocritical. Just a few weeks ago this community was practically up in arms that Obama was touring Iraq, Afghanistan and parts of Europe in a way that made him out to be the incumbent. When he made a sweeping speech in front of hundreds of thousands of Germans, he was accused of being presumptuous (to use the least inflammatory term I’ve seen cross these pages). Yet now, when he’s assuming a low-key approach (as I think many would agree is the appropriate response for a presidential candidate), you accuse him of fiddling while Rome burns.

So Larry… what would you have him do?

Comment by Postmaster | 2008-08-12 12:09:18

You are an idiot–pure and simple. Low-key approach when there is an aggressive military action?! McCain saw this coming a long time ago. And BO’s “world tour” was nothing but a campaign ad, it was not a serious diplomatic attempt. You and your dilettante leader deserve each other.

Comment by Patrick | 2008-08-12 12:12:00

N.M., respectfully, it’s not what people who might be interested in voting for him would have him do, it’s what he has done. It is the ‘first’ reaction that gives us a window into how a prospective candidate thinks.

I think what you’re reading here is more reaction to just how horribly unprepared this young man was to even run for president let alone actually take office.

Respectfully,
Patrick

say something other than that which shows him to be an imbecile.

he could do some reading, you know, get the history, and say something stronger than his milque toast response, which later morphed into McCain’s response.

Obama is an idiot. Yes, he should not be on vacation now, he should be campaigning. But I like the rest from this idiot’s words. Everyone is advancing but Obama/Soetoro now.

I’d actually like him to admit he is in over his head and just drop out.

Comment by C.S. | 2008-08-12 12:43:07

Well, it was Barack Obama who said we were waiting for him to fix everything. This thing with Russia isn’t going to disappear overnight; these repercussion will be there long after the next president takes the oath of office to “protect and defend” our nation and its Constitution so we need to know all three candidates ideas on how to deal with it. This is the real 3 am call coming a little early, you know. Russia’s back!

And has anyone forgotten that novice president GWB ignored al Qaida intelligence given to him by the previous administration in favor of some vague new plan that was never implemented before 9/11?

Does Obama think Putin will sit and wait to see which of the three he has to deal with in November? If he was an experienced commander in chief he would know that the enemy always moves while the target is in disarray and Obama’s world tour declaring himself a “symbol” put the onus on him to produce results; too late to un-ring that bell.

(And you might want to check out those German totals, heard it was more like 20,000 reported by the German press until the Obama campaign advisers who went on this “fact finding” campaign tour revised it.)

But take stock. McCain instinctively supported an American ally against a Russian aggressor and rallied to its defence. Obama instinctively palmed off the problem to an international talkshop guaranteed to do nothing but sit on its hands while Russia brought a pro-Western nation to heel.

One of these two men will next year take charge of the US - the greatest guarantor of freedom in a world increasingly threatened by freedom’s enemies. Pray the right man wins.

I believe about half of the adult population has probably tried an illegal substance at some point in their lives. This is pretty much a non-issue. Personally I wish they’d just decriminalize pot and be done with it. I’m sick of the hypocrisy.

Marijuana is the largest cash crop in the United States, now surpassing corn, wheat, soybeans–everything. It should be legalized and taxed, because the people who want it are getting it anyway, and because the state and federal governments could use the money. It’s non-addictive. It’s certainly no more socially harmful than tobacco or alcohol. Nor is it so dangerous. The number of deaths directly or indirectly attributable to marijuana each year are less than 10. The number is so low such incidents are statistically non-existent.

I’m not all that keen on the idea of a president running with his instincts, responding predictably and reflexively to provocation. Initial restraint followed by thoughtful words and carefully considered action is generally a more reliable and productive approach. It’s also a hell of a lot safer.

Have we forgotten that Russia is a major nuclear power? It is also a resurgent force in the world. That the United States is the single dominant power–the last remaining superpower–is a dangerous delusion. I would have thought Bush’s quick wrap-up of Iraq would have demonstrated that, if nothing else. We don’t need another military complication in our lives at the moment. We’ve got more than we can deal with on our plate already.

Under other circumstances, it would be funny to watch Obama change positions — from showing “restraint” to today’s latest “Russia must withdraw.” But it’s a real war, with bombs and innocent victims and a violation of another country’s borders by the world’s former aggressor in chief. Obama, the commander in chief wannabee is pathetic. Watched McCain’s “Town Hall” in Pennsylvania about an hour ago and he spoke with clarity, authority and off the cuff, working the stage and the crowd as usual. He received a standing ovation for his remarks on the Russia/Georgia crisis. I have never voted Republican. Looks like there’s a first time for everything. When all is said and done, the birth certificate controversy, the “tape,” and all the other stuff do not matter. This situation between Russia and Georgia is a tragedy for those people, but it really shines the light on Obama the powder puff. He can job down the beach all he likes, evoking Kennedyesque images. But it’s one dimensional. He’s starring in his own comic strip. The real world came knocking on the door this week and McCain answered. I am ashamed to see my Democratic Party look so weak. They crank out ads in response to McCain’s “celebrity” ad (and wasn’t that on the money?!), but the Democrats cannot address serious issues. As Obama jogs down the beach, I cannot help but think … it isn’t about looking Presidential, it’s about being Presidential.

Comment by Dan R. | 2008-08-12 12:45:22

All this talk about the economy is well & good, but in the final analysis a president’s first job is as Commander-in-Chief and his first responsibility is the security of the United States. In this regard, the difference between the two candidate is striking. McCain is clearly the better choice. By a mile. McCain sees the world as it is, not as he wishes it could be.

As part of the initiative the group released a web video which shows time-lapse photographs of barns being painted and soundbites of Obama pledging to support family farmers. The group hopes Obama supporters will “fan out to county fairs and community events across the state to share the “We’re in it together” video and discuss Obama’s rural-friendly policies.”

Obama is handling this situation poorly. No surprise there.

Col. Pat Lang provides some missing perspective on the situation on his blog Sic Semper Tyrannis. He also reports Israel has cut off weapons sales to Georgia.

The US effort to push the NATO alliance farther and farther east toward Russia has been reckless. Russia is an immature state given to chauvinist imperialism. What else was their history made up of before the Bolshevik period? Are they different now?

Let us hope that cooler heads in Washington and European capitals will find a diplomatic solution to this foolishness before the train runs off the track.

Comment by John | 2008-08-12 12:40:48

I think we will look back in November to this week, and realize that this was the week Obama’s campaign simply fell apart. While John McCain is commenting intelligently on the Russia-Georgia conflict, Obama is showing the world how clueless and unprepared he is to deal with our real problems overseas.

Hope you enjoy your vacation, Barack. It’s destroying your candidacy. And no one could be more happy about it than me.

Comment by ziggy | 2008-08-12 13:16:02

This is the week that Americans should be realizing that the foreign policy of John McCain is a direct extension of the foreign policy of George W. Bush; that both Bush and McCain are frontmen for far-right neoconservative forces behind the Project for the New American Century.

With Bush, the strongest connection was Cheney, although half the people involved with the Bush administration belong to PNAC and subscribed to the organization’s ideologies.

With McCain the obvious connection is Randy Scheunemann, McCain’s top foreign policy advisor. Scheunemann is high up in the PNAC organization. He was president of their Committee for the Liberation of Iraq. He helped map out and prepare the way for the U.S. invasion of Iraq in advance of both Bush’s 2000 election and 9/11.

Scheunemann is a paid lobbyist, who represented the interests of the Republic of Georgia in Washington DC until March 2008. After March 2008 he no longer did that. On paper, at least. He continues to be an owner of Orion Strategies, the corporation that contracted to represent Georgia in Washington DC April 2008 on. This is kind of like Cheney breaking his ties with the Oil Industry on paper when he became VP.

Georgia has bought a line of influence leading directly to John McCain. And John McCain’s hard anti-Russian line might be seen as a reflection of that.

ziggy - Whether or not Bush & McCain are “frontmen for far-right neoconservative forces behind the Project for the New American Century.” has no direct bearing on this controversy.

The issue here is whether Georgia was justified in its agressive strike, and/or whether Russia is justified in its agressive response. Given what has happened so far, what role should America play, if any? Both Georgia and Russia seem to have acted thinking they would slip under the radar of world opinion just long enough to get away with it, but things have turned out rather badly for all concerned. At the moment, Russia has the upper hand and Georgia is seriously outgunned and outmanned. Should the US allow things to escalate? That’s the issue, and it doesn’t matter if you’re rightwing or leftwing: the bombs falling are apolitical machines, but they’re killing real people. For the USA to use its influence and power to insist on a ceasefire and a negociated settlement instead of a bloodbath is hardly a ‘rightwing’ policy.

But Obama, made his naive why-can’t-we-just-all-get-along? comment and went on vacation. Reporters found him and he’s petulant and whiny that anyone should bother him about presidential policy stuff while he’s got more important priorities like his next meal and body surfing to deal with. Obama is so inexperienced and ignorant and self-centred that he fails to see that his inattention now could make this mess much, much worse.

Whether Obama’s position in this matter aligns with Bush or McCain is not so very important. Just because someone is a Republican doesn’t make them automatically immoral or politically incompetent.

Comment by ziggy | 2008-08-12 14:38:31

Apparently the government of Georgia neglected to inform the Obama campaign of their intention to move Georgian troops and armour into South Ossetia and begin the shelling of Tskhinvali on the same day Obama’s family left for Hawaii.

On the first day of the Georgian military action, 12 Russian peacekeeping troops stationed in South Ossetia were killed. Another 150 Russian peacekeepers were wounded.

Not that this justifies the extent of the Russian response, but it certainly demonstrates that there are two sides to the argument.

McCain immediately came down on the side of the Georgians, characterizing the situation as Russian aggression against an ally of western democracy. He immediately started talking about a NATO response–NATO being one of the very things that the Russians have some very legitimate security concerns about.

Obama has also condemned the military escalation, but has been more even-handed and restrained. His criticism of the Russians has hardened and grown as their military actions have continued. The message there is that continuation of those actions will result in increasing levels of international disapproval, and increasing levels of damage to important international relationships.

Short of actual outside military intervention–which would only be seriously considered by a total lunatic–which approach is more likely to settle the situation most quickly?

Comment by Dan R. | 2008-08-12 12:41:16

Look, I’m no Barack Obama fan, but what is the guy supposed to do? For that matter, what are McCain and Bush supposed to do? The Russians are taking care of business in their own back yard, just like we did in Haiti, Grenada and Panama. They set a trap for this young Georgian president and he walked right into it.

The Russians know full well that the west isn’t going to war over Georgia. The most severe thing we’d be likely to do is kick them out of the G-8 and cut off their lines of credit, in response to which they’d cut off the natural gas pipelines to Europe just in time for them to freeze this upcoming winter. The fact that the west needs Russia’s oil & gas will prevent us from doing anything more than expressing righteous indignation and calling for another toothless U.N. resolution.

BUT … on the other hand, if we had our OWN domestic oil & gas reserves online and producing, THEN we could really inflict some economic pain on the Russians for their thuggery.

Yet another argument for opening up US oil & gas reserves to immediate exploration.

As if there weren’t 1,000 other reasons not to want Barack Obama as president, having a stammering, clueless idiot like Zbignew F. Brzinski as his foreign policy advisor is reason enough in and of itself to vote against him.

An Obama presidency would be Jimmy Carter, Part Deux. Personally, I’d much rather have a Bush third term than a replay of Jimmy Carter. Carter’s presidency was the nadir of U.S. political and economic influence in my lifetime.

Obama looked sick before his vacation.

His hair is rapidly turning gray, he was not that gray before the primaries started, he looks so crackish! I think he recently went to the hospital to see about his hip. Has he released his medical records? McCain did.

We know and Obama knows that he’s in over his head. We should force Obama to release his medical records. Ex-crackhead and recent chain smoker doesn’t sound too healthy, imo. Addictive personality maybe?

Go ahead and drop out now Barry.

Does anyone have new pics of Deaniac? I heard he’s lost a lot of weight.

Putin is KGB and wants to put the old Soviet Union back like it was. This increase in energy prices has put him in the drivers seat, Western Europe is dependent on Putin for fuel, mostly natural gas. Bush said he looked into his eyes and saw his soul, but I always knew he was a snake. This guy will be trouble for years to come, the new President is just a Putin puppet, I could see Putin’s arm up his back, pulling the stings that controled his mouth.

You began well here, but you lost the plot with your last two comments because you failed to take into consideration the fact that the US and EU have nowhere near the “domestic” petroleum reserves (proven or unproven, tapped or untapped) to replace what it gets from Russia and its clients and friends. Even if you make the argument that greater domestic production capacity is a good short term thing (which I think it is), you can’t argue that that capacity would be sufficient to inflict economic pain on Russia (or anyone else, for that matter).

Now, if expanded petroleum exploration were to be done in concert with a total rethink of how we “do” energy we’d probably be able to get to the point where Russia et al are no longer as important to our energy security. It’s thus a pity that McCain has resorted to demagoguery rather than articulating a viable energy strategy.

(And no, Obama isn’t blameless here; he’s just as guilty of pandering to the electorate on this issue, but at least he’s put a greater amount of effort into pushing non-petroleum sources of energy than has McCain.)

Comment by Dan R. | 2008-08-12 14:18:44

Estimates that I’ve seen for US reserves are 21 billion barrels on the outer continental shelf, 15 billion barrels in northern Alaska, and a mind-boggling 1.5 TRILLION barrels in the oil shale of the Rocky Mountain states!!! (This doesn’t count what’s left in Texas/Oklahoma and the Gulf of Mexico) Russia’s total oil reserves are estimated to be about 160 billion barrels. Current Russian oil production is about 9 millon barrels per day. Current US oil production is about 7 million barrels a day.

Had we opened up our reserves in the 1990’s to production, we could be coming very close to being replace a significant part of Russian production ourselves, in which case we would now be able to meaningfully affect Russian behavior in Georgia by threatening the cut off their credit instead of being totally impotent.

And I strongly disagree that McCain hasn’t articulated a viable energy strategy. On the contrary, he has called for immediately opening up US reserves to production (although his continued resistance to drilling in ANWR baffles me), more nuclear power plant construction, more refinery construction (hopefully in places other than the Houston ship channel so that a single Cat-5 hurricane can’t wipe out our refining capacity), increased use of flex fuels, and financial/tax incentives for alternative energy development and production. Contrasted to Obama’s “energy plan” which consists of no new drilling, no new nuclear plants, no new refineries, raising taxes on energy companies, keeping our tires inflated, and creating a huge new government bureaucracy to try and direct the allocation of billions of new tax dollars to the development of alternative energy technolgies, McCain’s policies look pretty damn sound to me.

Comment by Evgenia | 2008-08-12 13:24:23

While I believe Russia was wrong in invading a sovereign nation, Georgia, it’s too easy to cast this matter in overly simplistic terms. What we must understand is that there have always been mistrust on both sides with regards to each other. The Georgians have a history of being defensive about their native son, Josef Stalin, especially since his atrocities came to light during the past decades.

In the early 1990s, Georgian president Shevardnadze did a little ethnic cleansing of his own, about 300-400K Ossetians to be precise, in areas claimed by Georgia. Incidentally these areas were considered part of Russia even before communist rule. The current Georgian leader Saakashvili is no saint either, though democratically elected, he and his government are mired in corruption. Georgia has to be part of NATO, otherwise Saakashvili’s promised reforms to Georgians would be seen as failure. That is why he tagged the US to be his big buddy. We in west have been arming and training the Georgian army near the backyard of Russia, and we wonder why this has further contributed to deteriorating relations between the two nations.

As anyone with reasonable knowledge of world history knows, Russia has a history of being attacked by foreign forces. This unique sensitivity to possible border conflicts, provoked or imagined, can be attributed to heightened sense of nationalism against the backdrop of Russia’s bloody history at the hands of outside conquerers.

To put it in another context, this invasion can be seen as a big brother (Russia) beating up the middle brother (Georgia), then middle brother tires of playing the victim role and decides to pummel the little brother (Ossetians). Little brother feels more akin to big brother and asks big brother for help. Middle brother gets beaten up by big brother again, and asks his big buddy (USA) to help him fight off big brother. Something like that.

As someone who is part Russian and who studied Slavic Studies and Russian in college, I can tell you that culturally we have actually liked and respected each other. For example, Russians have always admired Georgians for their shared love dancing. Many of the iconic Soviet dancers were actually ethnic Georgians, and believe me dancers were and are considered Gods in that part of the world. The tensions and ill-feelings are between the governments, not the people. That is why I believe this matter can still be settled through diplomatic means. Russia is not about to further risk the ire of the world by continuing this muscle flexing. Putin, despotic as he is, cannot be described as dumb.

Comment by Dan R. | 2008-08-12 13:57:37

Why don’t you “get real” you idiot. Georgia didn’t “invade” South Ossetia because South Ossetia is actually part of Georgia!

And as for McCain being in “cold war mode”, it’s good that one of the candidates for president sees, and has always seen, Vladimir Putin for what he really is: a Stalinist autocrat.

Comment by AJSHOPE | 2008-08-12 14:03:09

Not to mention that there are now reports that South Ossetia started firing on Georgia. This was planned from the get go by Russia. It only took 24 hours for 20,000 Russian troops and a fleet of Russian tanks to get to the heartland of Georgia. On top of that, Russia was handing out Russian passports and IDs, like they were candy, to the people in South Ossetia right up until the Russian invasion. This was a setup to take over Georgia while the world was focussed on the Olympics.

Comment by ziggy | 2008-08-12 15:11:30

So Georgia sent tanks, troops, and heavy artillary pouring into South Ossetia, and immediately began bombarding ethnic population center–killing 1,600 civilians in 24 hours, along with 15 official Russian peacekeepers? Then they start squawking aggression! when the Russians react?

Obviously Georgia was in no position to resist a large-scale Russian military response to their own provocative action. I mean, they mounted a massive attack and killed Russian peacekeepers. What the hell did they think the Russians would do?

The Georgians were counting on some outside assistance? Or outside pressure, to intimidate the Russians into inaction? Just who would that have been?

Comment by mary | 2008-08-12 15:33:04

Comment by LDW | 2008-08-12 15:41:02

Obama didn’t call for a UN resolution or sanctions against Russia but only suggested the UN might provide a “mediator”.

He said, “Let me be clear: We seek a future of cooperative engagement with the Russian government, and friendship with the Russian people. We want Russia to play its rightful role as a great nation — but with that role comes the responsibility to act as a force for progress in this new century, not regression to the conflicts of the past.”

Diplomatically that statement is like a whipping with a wet noodle: even if there is muscle behind it the statement undoes the intention.

Obama is continuing as he began - trying his best to keep everything fluffy and light and make no hard decisions in case one of those decisions might become inconvenient.

I can remember the day in 2000 that they announced that Bush had won the presidency. I looked at my husband and said to him “There is going to be a war”. He, and the rest of my family and friends thought that I was crazy. That was one of those ‘told you so moments’ I wish I had not have had.
Unfortunately, I do think that Bambam is going to win this thing. If the primaries have taught anything, it is that peoples’ votes do not matter. The moment that I saw that the dems nomination speech was to be on MLK’s anniversary of his infamous speech, I KNEW Bambam was going to be the nom. This thing has been in the works far longer than anyone will ever realize.
What I cannot understand is the far-left and their love-fest with how the rest of the world perceives the US. Can they not see that of course the rest of the world wants Bambam to win? His presidency will be the end of America. In so many ways. Militarily, economically, socially. Until this election year, I have never noticed the colour of one’s skin (and I am Canadian; racism is not a problem in my country like yours). Now even in non-racist countries, race is front and center. If this is what the ‘citizen of the world’ and ‘great uniter’ has to offer, woe to the rest of the ‘citizens of the world’…

You had Pierre Trudeau. He was a genius and you can’t compare to this Empty Suit candidate Barack who’s had 144 days in the senate and 3 years public school in Indonesia that qualifies for ‘world-traveled sage’

As for immigrating to Canada, I think as long you pay your $3.00 at the border it is pretty easy to get lost here. LOTS of free (not in the $ sense) land. Just remember to say ‘eh’ a lot and no one will know the difference:)
I can’t understand your country’s aversion to universal health care. I am conservative and there isn’t another conservative here who would be willing to give it up. If I may ask a question:
Let’s say a family of 4 makes $60,000 a year. How much would you pay in taxes on that, and what is the cost for private health care? Until I know the answer to a question of this nature, I cannot compare as to whether or not we really are that much more highly taxed than Americans.
And if any of you do end up in the Great White North, welcome. And bring your snow pants…
(But do realize that we have a Conservative Prime Minister, not that that is much different from a Centrist Democrat…)

John McCain’s top foreign policy advisor is on the payroll of the Republic of Georgia.

That advisor has direct connections with the ultra-conservative PNAC, and was directly involved in setting the stage for the invasion of Iraq.

Until April he was paid directly by Georgia as their registered lobbyist.

April 2008 on a company he owns–Orion Strategies, LLC–pockets the money and continues the lobbying. The April 2008 contract with Georgia was worth $200,000.

This is influence peddling at its most blatant. The far-right political goals and ideologies of this guy are fully documented and totally obvious.
