For Barack Obama: Eight Questions [Update]

While most folks accept that Obama was born in the U.S. of an American mother, it is increasingly suggestive that he may have shared Kenyan citizenship from his father, then when his mother remarried, was adopted and became an Indonesian citizen. In the latter, a school record clearly lists his citizenship as Indonesian. This would seem consistent with his adoption and the family move to Indonesia.
Obama has not addressed this. His offered birth certificate is being questioned by a number of folks who claim it is a forgery. It is suggested that his original birth certificate was sealed and replaced by a new one upon his adoption and move to Indonesia. It is suggested that in addition to his new name, Barry Soetoro, his adopted father and his mother changed his citizenship to Indonesia. Surely there will be records of this somewhere but I’ve yet to see anything beyond the notes about the sealed original birth certificate, the new one, a copy allegedly issued in 2007, an original that Obama wrote he held, and comments about the adoption in 1965 or 1966. I have not seen anything definitive on any of this to show it is anything more than speculation.
A photograph of an Indonesian school record, taken in January 2007 purportedly shows Obama as Barry Soetoro, religion as Islam, and citizenship as Indonesian. I have personally emailed AP and the current host of this image (Daylife) seeking confirmation that this image is legit. I’ve even called the latter but it does not appear that anyone answers the phones and voicemail messages have so far not been returned. I’m very suspicious of this document, even though it shows that it’s been posted for 18 months, it’s discovery now and content is very timely and explosive. Consider too that Daylife management include previous members of Edwards and Kerry’s campaigns, plus the DNC. This document could be a fake to stir up and embarrass those opposing Obama. I have received confirmation from Matthew Lutts at AP at 3:44 p.m. ET that “Yes, the image is legit.”
There are numerous sites now linking to and discussing this document. An early source is so-called TexasDarlin in his/her blog of the same name. [SusanUnPC's Note: It was not the intention of Larry Johnson or me in any way to criticize TexasDarlin's dogged, extensive work on these issues. We know her, and have spoken to her on the telephone. Since I haven't been able to reach Matthew after posting this, I am including this note, and trust he does not object. I find his story to be very worthwhile. He sent it to us late last night, when Larry and I were both exhausted and had too many other matters we were dealing with. We apologize to TexasDarlin for any offense, but we also respect Matthew's considerable research abilities and his superlative writing skills.] As they are anonymous, I distrust what they write. As of this afternoon, though, they do link to an AP article by Nedra Pickler via The Washington Post regarding the school record. The focus there was disputing the labeled religion but not the citizenship. Religion was and for some is still the hot-button issue. The question of citizenship is far more important and has constitutional and electability implications that make this worthy of revisiting.
Two other sites offer more cautious review of the school record and its implications:
- Change & Experience. Which is also, like TexasDarlin, anonymous, but offers more careful and even balanced discussion of the school record.
- Andy Martin, author of “Obama: The Man Behind the Mask”, offers a cautious analysis of the document and its implications.
This does put the legitimacy of Obama’s candidacy and eligibility to be president in question. I think Obama needs to provide unequivocal answers to a number of questions:
- Are you now a U.S. citizen?
- Have you ever held as a youth or adult, citizenship in another country?
- Did you ever possess or travel using, at least in part, the passport of another country? (E.g., while in Indonesia, visiting Pakistan, Kenya)
- Did you renounce any foreign citizenship, and when, and do you now hold solely U.S. citizenship today?
- Can you confirm or deny your name change as a youth from Barack Hussein Obama II to Barry Soetoro when you were adopted by your step-father?
- Did you legally reclaim your birth name? When and how?
- Why did you not list your adopted name Barry Soetoro on any forms associated with your legal profession or others that ask for any other names you have ever used? Have you now or will you update these records?
- And by the way, did you register with the U.S. Selective Service when you turned 18?
I am sure these questions can be better worded, especially to extract clear yes/no answers, and I am also sure that there are other pertinent questions that might be asked at the same time. I do think that now, or later in the campaign, these questions will be asked again and again and that eventually Obama will be forced to answer. I’d prefer that now so that the Democratic party and delegates to the convention can make an informed choice when they vote for Obama or Clinton as the party nominee.

I just want to add a clarification to my post. In referencing TexasDarlin and noting his/her anonymity, I meant no disrespect, nor did I dispute what they have written. (For the record, I have also written comments in the past at TexasDarlin site directly.) My point is simply that I personally question anonymous posts and blogs because they lack a name and face behind them. As we see too much of on the Internet today anybody can post just about anything without the slightest chance of being held accountable. I recognize that, as Susan writes here and as both Larry and her have written previously, they have had contact with TexasDarlin and are comfortable with trusting TexasDarlin is legit. Fine. I was not in anyway suggesting this was in error and, again, no disrepect intended.

I don’t know about authenticity of the school enrollment form here. But want to share with you what it is like growing up in different parts of the world. I grew up in India (until age 12) in a Hindu family. I went to a Catholoc school, because that was the best education available. I said the Lord’s prayer, and even attended church a few time, and received mass. And that is what the other 1000 hindus attending this school did. It did not make me a Christian, and I have never claimed to be one.
In the city I gre up in, there was also a large Muslim population. We had muslim friends, we aattended their religious ceremonies, and yes, I have been to a mosque with my friends. Again, that does not make me a muslim.
Finally, the muslim call to prayers is sent out over loudspeakers of the mosque. Because I heard this call to prayer twice a day for many years, I can recite it. And I can also confirm that when some imam’s sing the prayer, it is the most beautiful sound when heard against the evening sunset.
It is difficult for people who grew up in this country to understand how people can be surrounded by folks from other religions, attend and celebrate with friends from other religions, yet not adopt that religion.

Also, you are using one poll when most people know the best way to get real numbers is to average several polls together. The evangelicals that gave Bush the last two elections are not as excited about McCain and probably won’t show up to vote in the same kind of numbers. The polls mean nothing, especially this far out from the election.

I don’t believe a child can make the decision of what religion they are. Barack’s mother was an atheist, why would she make her son a muslim? His stepfather was a muslim, so it would make sense that he would know some things about islam and visited a mosque. Also, he was living in a predominantly muslim country, but that doesn’t mean he was a muslim. Do you have pictures of him praying to Mecca? I’d like to see a link to an interview with his half-brother who says Barack was a muslim if you could.

Look at Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, she is doing an amazing job running her country. In some ways I even think a woman could be a better leader as women are more compassionate and tend to care more for their fellow citizens.
I voted for Barack Obama because I feel that he has a plan that will lead this country in a new, better, direction. If Barack were not in this race, my vote likely would have gone to Hillary (Bill Richardson would have been a distant second). Barack Obama is the candidate who’s policies and vision of the future of this country were most similar to my own. He’s not perfect, I’ll admit that. I don’t think he’s a messiah, but I think he is a very intelligent man who wants to do what he thinks is best for this country.

Jake Tapper, ABC News senior national correspondent, commenting on the recording in his blog, observes that “nowhere in there does Malik expressly say anything about Obama having a Muslim background. And nowhere does he ‘confirm’ anything about Obama having a Muslim background. Malik refers to Obama having a ‘connection’ to something, perhaps Islam, which could clearly be a reference to Obama’s father.”

He was listed under his adopted father’s name and religion. This wasn’t a madrassa. And the first school he went to there was a catholic school.

He’s a phoney who cares only about his image. He fakes a MLK accent when speaking to some audiences, and talks like Dave Chappelle parodying a white person when when speaking to others. Meanwhile NO ONE knows where he really stands, because he keeps changing his views and votes on everything.

Anybody who has the power to release information would be using that overview as guidance in their decision making. Now when the review says that a disclosure of information is a violation of the privacy act when it retrieved by either a name or a service number, I have a difficult time believing any claims which would suggest information requested by a random e-mailer would then be retrieved (using the name given by the emailer) and released to that emailer when the courts are saying it’s a violation of law to do so. No, there are at least two different sources, even referenced in this thread and on other sites, such as TPM that claim this but these are very suspicious to say the least. They claim, contrary to well established privacy regulations that Selective Service employees divulged Obama’s alleged registration. This didn’t come from Obama, nor with his apparent approval; thus I suspect fraud on the part of the posters claiming this information or illegal disclosure on the part of the government workers disclosing it. Anyway, no proof shown thus question still outstanding.

There’s a historical part to this which influences the probability that the page is telling the truth about Barry’s Indonesian citizenship. In those days in Indonesia, there was a “president” spelled dictator named Sukarno. He was the father of that country’s independence but the similarity between George Washington and he end there.
The country was corrupt but terribly nationalistic, hating most everything western, Christian or non muslim.
Barry’s adopted dad was a smalltime official for that government and would have never risked his life over something like that. Take into account that if he was a good man, practicing his religion faithfully, that he could not tolerate a son being Christian.

I agree with the conclusions of the article you link above. NPR already reported HRC will announce at convention she will cast her SD vote for BO and ask everyone to do the same at the convention. They are even trying to find a way to release her secret ballot as SD showing she indeed voted for BO… This is beyond humiliating….
If she becomes an active versus passive participant in this sham election, then she is not the candidate we thought she was. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but look at all the lies they “leaked” about her “giving up” during the primaries.
However, not having much faith of her even being given an equal seat at the convention banquet table, I have resigned myself to a McCain presidency. They can call him all the names and say all the negative things they want, but I do believe it is best to go “with the devil you know” than the devil you know nothing about. McCain isn’t Bush and McCain isn’t Obama and that will have to be enough for this election if what you say is true. At least we’ll “live to fight another day.”

Hillary Clinton is the best possible leader for this great nation. But given everything we’ve seen from the DNC and the aggressive nature with which Obama’s campaign and supporters have attacked, it seems very unlikely they have not staged the entire process.
Hillary undoubtedly figures it would not be wise to blow up the party and expect to win this Fall. The party is already divided and will remain so until the Repubs give reason for unity once again(no Dem can glue Humpty Dumpty back together again).

Obama/Soertoro was a resident (or citizen) of Indonesia during a time of a government in transition brought on by the assassination of 6 of it’s generals and a Communist group trying to overthrow its government. Can you imagine how a similar, simple ad campaign, with handbills made on computers every where and handed out all over, could quickly spread the story of “Who is Barry Soetoro?” This is a story that continues to remain trapped on the Internet. Isn’t it time to get the word out on the street?

No big money needed, Get some friends together, go out at night, and plaster the neighborhoods with “Who is Barry Soetoro?” in large type on one side of a sheet of paper. Live in a big city? Leave ‘em in your apartment building lobby or under doors like a delivery restaurant menu. On a supermarket bulletin board. Any place you can think of with high people traffic.

That is a rather simplistic summation of the law regarding dual citizenship which would need further study. Law, if one is not studied in its concepts, is a very difficult thing to decipher. PERIOD!
However, the laws in Indonesia at the time did not allow for dual citizenship (that was changed about a year ago), so to become an Indonesian citizen, the original citizenship would have to be renounced and officially invalidated.
These are all very big ifs, but have never been answered.
Perhaps his father at the time never did anything official and was able to fill out the paperwork and escape scrutiny, but the circumstances around his marrying an American at that time and his position make that unlikely.
Anyway, you look at it, the questions are legit.

I’d like to know more about the man who raised Barry. In 1965 there was a coup overthrowing the government. Mr. Soetoro may have been in Hawaii around that time, but he moved back to Indonesia with his family ‘67 to’68. In 1968 Mobile began operating Arun gas fields owned by Indonesian state’s Pertamina. In 1971, Mobile dscovered natural gas north of Aceh and ZILS or Lhokesemawe Industrial Zone was created. Somewhere in this time frame, Mr. Soetoro went to work for Mobile Oil of Indonesia doing government relations.
In 1972 or 1973, Barry and Mom left and went back to Hawaii. They lived in some interesting times in Indonesia. Barry’s father was hardly disconnected from it. I’d be curious to know more about this man who raised Barry in his formative years.

They knew you can’t be loyal to two groups at once, so they put it in writing and ratified that no one except a native born citizen could be president. Thus, any Tory refusing to renounce their British loyalty could not be president.
A president holding two or three citizenships in different countries is a big problem. For a better understanding of our government’s stand on dual citizenship, go to the immigration site that tells the problems a dual citizen may face; including having to serve in its’ military. Theoretically, if Obama holds dual citizenship in Kenya, and his cousin Odinga that he campaigned for tells him to spy upon the U. S. for Kenya, Obama would be obligated to do it.
