Obama Takes Soft Money For Convention

Pepsi Center According to the Los Angeles Times Obama is soliciting “soft money” to meet fundraising goals for the convention despite the fact he vowed to to reform convention funding.

The Denver Host Committee by mid-June once again fell short of the $60 million dollars needed for the convention by $11.6 million. So, Obama’s campaign took charge and began offering “sweetheart” deals in exchange for donations of up to a $1 million dollars each. Who are they soliciting? Labor unions and others.

What kind of “sweetheart” deals do they get? (Nothing a regular citizen will see).

Here is what the campaign is offering, stadium skyboxes for Obama’s acceptance speech and other perks.

And some of the donors get special bundles of perks, including use of the party suites at Denver’s Invesco Field, as well as special policy briefings by Obama advisors, choice hotel rooms and party invitations. Here is what you get for a $1 million dollar donation, Those paying the $1-million price tag will get skybox tickets for 25 people and an additional 50 regular tickets to Invesco Field. Some others will get occasional access to skyboxes at the Pepsi Center, where the rest of the convention will take place. Donors will also have access to private parties and receptions.

The problem with Obama taking “soft money” for the convention, he has once again flipped on a promise, a vow to reform convention funding.

What was his excuse for taking “soft money”? The Denver Host Committee was facing a budget shortfall and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is facing a large deficit in the Democratic National Convention budget.

So Obama what is the truth? Are you for reform or aren’t you for reform? We don’t really know the answer to these questions, probably never will, since the answers change everyday to all his “policies”. What we are almost certain of Obama’s “word” means little! And definitely not enough for him to be our President!

This must be the change we’ve been waiting for. Kind of gives us a glimpse of what life under Obama rule will be like. We’re all out here living with the downsizing brought by corporate America. You’d think he could at least try to live within his means, but no, he has to have a stadium. So, if you have to go back on a few promises and squeeze a little harder to get the lucre, well, who cares about those insignificant people think anyway.

Comment by janine | 2008-08-17 19:09:37

If you weren’t such idiots you would see that he owes it to the DNC to get more money for them…hence the large stadium and soft money. they’re short of money - what are you going to do? turn your back on the DNC so that things cannot happen? or promise them a sleep over at the white house (like bill and hillary did) if someone gives money?

Comment by Annie Oakley | 2008-08-17 19:12:58

Is the DNC having trouble raising money from us idiots? What WORM. Barry has to ride us dirty.

Comment by Ferdberfle | 2008-08-17 19:17:26

You’re right-he does owe the DNC because they rigged it for him. The DNC hitched their little red wagon to a falling star. I hope they go broke.

It was Obama that moved the location of the convention. The DNC knew after the fact..Just as the DNC headquarters was moved by Obama. Chicago style,,,

Janine - Nobody asked for the “stadium” convention but OBAMA…excuse me…OBAMA’S EGO. You must be having a really difficult time Janine, for wasn’t Obama supposed to be the candidate of CHANGE? You know, “THE ONE” who would bring back integrity…it must really hurt to see that he’s renigged on almost every issue on which he previously took a stand.

The word Propaganda , Propagandist kept nagging me, so I did a little work, and wow! There was a whole lot more than this, out of about twenty, the o campaign has about 18 going full force. Creepy, Creepy, Creepy.

“The propagandist hires a hall, rents radio stations, fills a great stadium, marches a million or at least a lot of men in a parade. He employs symbols, colors, music, movement, all the dramatic arts. He gets us to write letters, to send telegrams, to contribute to his cause. He appeals to the desire, common to most of us, to follow the crowd. Because he wants us to follow the crowd in masses, he directs his appeal to groups held together already by common ties, ties of nationality, religion, race, sex, vocation. Thus propagandists campaigning for or against a program will appeal to us as Catholics, Protestants, or Jews…as farmers or as school teachers; as housewives or as miners.
With the aid of all the other propaganda devices, all of the artifices of flattery are used to harness the fears and hatreds, prejudices and biases, convictions and ideals common to a group. Thus is emotion made to push and pull us as members of a group onto a Band Wagon.” (Institute for Propaganda Analysis, 1938)

The DCCC called me for money today and gave them an earful.

I let them know, and I admit I was angry, that I had no intention of sending them money. I told them I would donate to individual candidates but not one dime to them.

Comment by vinnie | 2008-08-17 13:31:08

I received a letter in the mail from bambi asking for some $$. I find it interesting that on the front of the return envelope, there’s a note that says ‘you can help us cut cost by putting your own stamp on the mailing’…now that’s sad. Not only did I send the letter back with big letters saying NEVER. BO., I sent it back using his dime. That’s what you get for your BS barry.

Comment by LindaA1 | 2008-08-17 14:04:20

Has anybody been successful GETTING OFF the Barack Obama Fundraising list? Every time I open my email, there’s another hand out soliciting cash from another Obegger or the DNC.

I keep yelling at them in cyperspeak and demanding that they remove my name from their flicking list but apparently they’ve seen my donations to Hillary and just will not stop Obugging me.

Is everybody having this problem?

Comment by makeji | 2008-08-17 14:10:16

I stopped writing anything on the insert or the envelope - I just put the insert into the envelope, seal it up and toss it back into the mail.

Keep sending them back - it costs 21 cents for each postage paid envelope they get back.

Me too!!! I’ve been trying to unsuscribe from the dnc mailing list for months. I get a message that they will send me a code number that I have to enter. Only one time I’ve gotten “the” code and it didn’t work.

Comment by meileen | 2008-08-17 15:36:12

I had problems with the Dems requesting money and not being able to get off their list. They send you a code to validate the unsubscribe. It ends up going into your bulk mail. So, I emptied the bulk mail and then re-unsubscribed, went into bulk and used the code.

Not sure if the O campaign uses the same tactic (the request certainly doesn’t go into bulk!); but you can give it a try.

Comment by no waffles aka drkate | 2008-08-17 15:41:36

I got off the list interestingly, by sending a message to MEchelle. I had always sent back messages anyway, saying No BO, etc…but they kept coming.

Then MEchelle sent an email with some BS story about Barry….I responded back that he was unqualified and that she hated white people too much, and until she dropped that I’d never vote for barky.

Well, no more emails from the DNC!

I’ve gotten a half dozen or more THICK envelopes from them–I just toss them in a sack for the recycling. I can’t be bothered to even read them.

That idea about sending back the envelope with a sentiment written inside is interesting, though!

So many of us are deciding between food, meds, heat, gas, visits to family. This election is proving to me on many levels that it isn’t about the voters its about the Corporate Political Parties, world globalization control by the corporations and to hell with democracy, truth, experience, policy issues- let the voters fight amongst themselves while the DNC decides, selects, and divides us any which way they can.

Comment by Katmoon | 2008-08-17 13:50:41

Also those of us with military in our family, work at helping to give some extra to them as well; there are many service men and women having to get food stamps, etc. All the vultures out there as well, trying to get a dime from military families for this or that, with interest rates starting around 18%. Their phone calls home are not free, their uniforms are not free, their weapons are not free should one get damaged at war.
I wonder, how many plated humvees, phone cards to home, kevlar vests, could be purchased.

OR perhaps how many people could finally leave a FEMA trailer and have a non-toxic home to live in, or school supplies for U.S. children, and the list is endless.

The amount of money willing to be paid and willing to be charged all in the name of campaign is sickening

Comment by meileen | 2008-08-17 15:40:22

I was commenting on the same thing recently. If the party knew they were going to select this wimp, why are we bothering with the whole charade of a primary? Why did we waste so many millions when we could have used all that money to help needy families? I mean, universal healthcare, anyone?

Yet people keep believing that if Obama just gets in the WH he will suddenly keep his word on everything. Of course, in the next breath, they say he’s like any other politician and says what he needs to say to win.
This after months of saying Obama wasn’t like any other politician.

Research in education shows that performance in college is highly associated with performance in high school. What performance will Obama have to draw from if elected POTUS. NOTHING. Yet his supporters somehow think he has the answers. He has NO answers- no record of any answers. No record of much of anything except getting himself elected. It is the same mentality that got W elected in 2000. Yet look what we got? Gore would have been so much better but he wasn’t the “cool” candidate. He was the nurd just like Hillary is the bitch. Like Tina fey said months ago, “Bitches get things done.” Nurds get things done. When we so called people with “intelligence” , including the superdelegates going to wake up and do what is best for the nation? Obama has no answers to anything. Just alot of pie in the sky flip flopping rhetoric that will lead us even future down the tubes than the US is already. It will be tragic to our nation if he becomes our nominee and horrific should God forbid he win. Obamabots who support this man are largely young idealistic youth who have never been around the block to know the difference between spin and real competence. It is a shame. Where are their parents to give them guidance as to what it means to be an authentic, grounded, competent adult capable of real leadership? MAybe after W the youth of today is ashamed of what many adults advised and they say- we will do it our way as look what your way got us? In my opinion, that is one of the the real tragedies of the Bush legacy.

campaign promises and campaign attacks were done so that he could portray Hilary negatively, but they create GE problems, which are showing. No one would care so much about these kinds of adjustments had he run a high-minded campaign in the primary. One thing he might do, maybe the only thing, would be to ask Hillary onto his ticket and show that the empty words were those attacks on her character, and that he’d adjusted his message to make himself look lofty in comparison with her. If you run against a fellow Democrat rather than simply for yourself, you end up with problems like these. And those who believed he was speaking truthfully in the primary and wasn’t been any old politician who’d say anything to win are already disillusioned, proving yet again that if you don’t want to disillusion, don’t illusion in the first place.

It’s best to admit you were deceptive early and give the voters a chance to get a new more realistic impression, and to decide on something more real.

From the NYT “hope” article, here’s a wise observation from the TN guv:

[I]n the blunter words of Gov. Phil Bredesen, Democrat of Tennessee: “Instead of giving big speeches at big stadiums, he needs to give straight-up 10-word answers to people at Wal-Mart about how he would improve their lives.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/17/us/politics/17elect.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=hope&st=cse&oref=slogin

Obama is going to blow this for we Democrats. Gallup again today is a tie, at 45 each, and independent observers think McCain did very well last night:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0808/A_strong_McCain_closes_with_America_first.html?showall

and Jake Tapper said:

McCain gave the conservative answers that the crowd seemed to want. But beyond that, reviews seem to indicate it was one of the best — if not the very best — of McCain’s speaking performances in this election cycle.

Comment by Diana | 2008-08-17 15:17:17

I totally agree with Jake. It was McCain’s night to shine and shine he did. No charisma from Obama. A few answers he totally tanked on, but I have to admit it was nice for a change to see the real Obama. I now think one of Obama’s biggest problems is he has fallen into the “ME” generation. My needs, my wants, my desires. No empathy for anything or anyone else. He showed that last night. I could never vote for him even with everything else I know about him aside.

Is his campaign and the DNC separate? And if so, why will he not just cover some of it? Party unity, right B? Politics is a confusing and dirty business. I may give to X, but it really goes to H.

Can anyone tell me why Obama felt the need to move his coronation ceremony from the Pepsi Center to Invesco Field (adding over 3 million dollars to the already outrageous cost of the convention) if he didn‘t have a clear plan on how to pay for the new venue? He’s preached about ending wasteful government spending, enforcing pay-as-you-go rules, making government accountable and efficient…

Nice article in yesterday’s New York Times. If you have not already seen it, it is worth while looking it up. 15 govenors, congression delegates and state party people in battleground states are really starting to question the Obama candidacy. If this trend would continue and his support weaken even more, the super delegates may be convinced that they need Hillary Clinton, if they hope to win the general election.

He is so high-maintenance. Repainting his plane, how much did that cost? Renting another plane while O Force One was being repainted, how much did that cost? Renting the stadium, how much did that cost?

And the extra secret service for his stadium speech, how much did that cost taxpayers?

On top of that, all the donations that would go to the party or down-ticket races is now diverted to Obama, because he opted out of public financing. Serves him right, he opted for the more expensive route which was the OPPOSITE OF WHAT HE PROMISED! Some newspapers endorsed him precisely because he promised to use public financing, which he flip-flopped on.

It makes me sick to think of all that money being spent for Obama’s big ego. How many people could be fed, how many people could save their homes, how many of our sick can see a doctor, on and on…
All this money being spent, just so Obama can give his great speech at a stadium, even though he’s going to lose, I guess it will be his last hurrah. This would be funny, if it weren’t so sad.

Comment by Doris T. | 2008-08-17 15:54:03

I’m seriously beginning to wonder if Obama and the DNC and supporters of the DNC are all into taking drugs.

They should all stop believing in their own hype and step back, and say to themselves “what the hell are we doing.”

No chance of that I guess, they would have to face reality…they selected the wrong candidate.

Yep, at this historic moment in time, they will all go down in history books as corrupt, power-hungary, thinking about themselves before Our Country, as well as incompetent, lacking in honesty & integrity, and with a capital L on their foreheads…

…LOSERS!

Comment by tj | 2008-08-17 17:33:42

If they cannot pay for all the extravagance of the convention then why dont they cut back? The rest of the nation is having to cut things out, why can’t the DNC. Maybe its because they all have so much money they think it never runs out. If they are in so much need they should foot the bill themselves. Im sure Donna, Nancy, BO and Dean have enough to spare. It seems backwards to give special deals out while you cannot afford to pay for it. I think they should just cancel the big stadium and have BO accept his speech at The Pepsi center, or better yet on a tree stump in the middle of a field somewhere. They could accomidate thousands of people and BO can still make his borifying speech. Best of all they will not have to spend a dime ,and if Hillary wins we dont have to worry about what to do with BO over at the stadium.

Problem solved! The DNC saves money and Hillary can accept the nomination at the Pepsi center , as it should be.

Democratic party is having trouble because Many of us had stopped donating money and turned in our memberhip cards-And if they think for one minute that we will fall in line by maybe useing Hillary to come out and say we need to unity..I know they have this planned so-I can say now we will not unity behind Obama’s smelly dirt tail!We will turn and walk out and go home -support John Mccain as many are now found their way to him.But we will wait to see what goes down and in November we Hillary supporters will vote for John McCain-

It’s a joke Obama’s debate such a liar and a fool to think that we can read him now even of his flip flops he trys to hide-MSNBC CAN protect all they want-Let’s seecan Obama even talkm withoput double talking?????????????no

AFTER listening to Obama and McCain, yes Obama was smooth but no substance, whereas McCain, was sharp, specific and came across like a true leader, confident and experienced on what to do.

I just can’t imagine the DNC super delegates still wanting to support Obama after listening to his lack luster appearance on the Warren Forum. Pretty clear.

If Hillary is not nominated, I will have no problem for the first time in my life voting for a Republican President, John McCain.

Was sick to my stomach to see Lewis (Hillary former supporter) talk up Obama on the panel.

Hillary would have held her own.
All I know is if Obama is nominated and the MSNBC idiots out number the clear thinking Americans and he wins, according to Michelle the WHITE house is a reacism term and so it will be painted Black no doubt, and the fact Obama does not believe in Christmas or Birthday gifts for his children, all I got to say if there is no Christmas tree and Christmas Decorations in the White house next year and if Santa Claus gets the boot like the ACLU has already gotten rid of the Christmas programs in the schools, the singing of Christmas carrols, that Christians will be forced to march on the Capitol, because they are taking God out of everything for which our country was founded, I do believe God will be on our side when we do. Enough already. NO OBAMA

I really believe that Obama WILL lose to McCain. I’ve read on different sites that far right republicans plan on staying home and not vote because they dislike McCain. Well my in-laws from Florida are as far right as you can get, they hated Bill Clinton and loved Bush anyway they DO NOT plan on staying home. They realize that Obama does not have the experience, they don’t trust him and not to mention that they just can’t stand him. Right now they’re just twiddling their thumbs but come November they WILL come out in droves. They are overjoyed that I plan on voting for McCain but I let them know that if Hillary becomes the nominee I’ll drop McCain like a hot potato.
