Rep. Chet Edwards? Who’s He?

If it is true — and, after all, it is just one news report carrying the story, as LisaB’s news round-up indicates — that Hillary Clinton was never vetted for the vice presidential slot, I am sorely disappointed that no one in Barack Obama’s campaign understood the necessity of bestowing upon her the simple courtesy of considering her for the position.

If I were he, knowing that 18,000,000 Americans cast their votes for her in the primaries, I would have gone out of my way to make her feel an important part of the veepstake process. Even if I had no intention of selecting her, I would do it as a simple courtesy and a heartfelt acknowledgement of her stature in the party and all of those who voted for her. (Let’s hope that the Politico source was wrong.)

Chet Edwards is the latest name being added to the buzz about possible V.P. picks for Barack Obama.

Chet. Now there’s a manly name. For those of us old enough to remember, his name evokes the legendary newsman Chet Huntley. But, frankly, most of us have never heard of Chet Edwards before, along with 90% of all Americans. Lest anyone get too excited, here’s what the Campaign Spot blog at the National Review has to say about him:

There's praise for Edwards in the Corner, but from a straight-up political view, I think Obama picking Chet Edwards would be disastrous. A nine-term House vet on the Appropriations Committee doesn't scream hope and change. He voted for the Iraq War — which Obama touted as the most important decision since the end of the Cold War — and disagrees with Obama on ANWR, offshore drilling, amnesty for illegal immigrants, CAFE standards, staunchly opposes gay marriage, … There's balance on the ticket, and then there's a successor a heartbeat away who would reverse all of your policy initiatives.

Sure, he's very pro-choice, rated F by the NRA, and manages to hang on to a central Texas House district. And Pelosi recommended him. But the debate would consist almost entirely of the GOP vice-presidential candidate saying, "I agree with Chet's old position, the one he had before he put his manhood in a blind trust and flip-flopped to agree with Obama's liberal position." Edwards would constantly be in the awkward position of defending positions he doesn't agree with.

I suspect his name popped up today just to give the starving journalists something to chew on for another day.

Besides, how would he really help Obama? It’s not as if Obama has a prayer of carrying the state of Texas.

Well, at least Chet Edwards is getting his 15 minutes of fame. Fox News has announced that reporter have his home in Texas staked out now. He’d might as well enjoy the attention while it lasts!

I think it’s a simple case of economics… they didn’t want to have to change the pre-ordered bumber stickers “Obama/Edwards’08″”

Personally, I was hoping for the Senator from Hawai’i… Daniel Akaka… now there’s a bumper sticker you can believe in: “Obamakaka”
Has a nice ring to it. And it comes with an autographed copy of a Hawaiian COLB.

I am sorely disappointed that no one in Barack Obama’s campaign understood the necessity of bestowing upon her the simple courtesy of considering her for the position.

The message was “sent” when Obama ostentatiously hired Patti Solis-Doyle, previously fired by Hillary for “incompetence,” to lead the operational side of the VP vetting. Hillary was never treated with a modicum of respect by Obama. It was obvious then, it is obvious now.

Comment by fif | 2008-08-22 22:08:23

And we will return the favor by offering him no respect. But that is only one reason not to respect or trust him.

BARACK OBAMA

Obama, Fan of Chinese Ports, Trains, and Airports

Obama, yesterday: “Everybody’s watching what’s going on in Beijing right now with the Olympics , Think about the amount of money that China has spent on infrastructure. Their ports, their train systems, their airports are vastly the superior to us now, which means if you are a corporation deciding where to do business, you’re starting to think, ‘Beijing looks like a pretty good option.’”

Comment by cathnealon | 2008-08-22 20:51:39

Comment by Jeremiah God Damn Amerikkka Wright | 2008-08-22 21:20:49

I guess he missed the whole report about the polution and the fake store fronts built around the olympic facilities where tourists would most likely be to cover up the poverty and delapidation rampant across much of the city.

Poor Obama, such a phoney front that when he sees a phoney front he thinks its as real as he is.

Oh By the Way Barry, most corporations don’t decide where to do business based on who has an olympic sized swimming pool in the city.

God he is an idiot.

Comment by KsGirl | 2008-08-22 20:54:52

Let’s take up a collection and see if we can raise enough money to send him and Me-chelle to Beijing to live for good…

Oh and we’ll have the government seize the mansion in Chicago that was bought with dirty money and donate it to his brother that lives in a shanty in Africa.

Sounds like a fair and just trade to me…

Comment by andySF | 2008-08-22 21:04:42

I am sure that the Chinese people don’t want him. At least the corrupted politicians there get a few things done for their people(like make sure to feed people, save people in crisis). even Kenya may not want him, they are poor already, Obama will drain them dry.

Comment by joseyj | 2008-08-22 22:34:43

ABC News seems to think it’s Biden.
Biden has been given SS protection and there’s activity at his house.

Per CNN – Hillary has been told she’s not Obama’s VP pick.
Sure makes it easier to vote for McCain.

Chet Edwards is a neighbor of mine when he is in Texas.
He is very well liked in this mostly Republican
district. I happened to drive by his house this
afternoon and there were several reporters. I can
only assume that this would be a “do no harm” choice.
His father in law is a Baptist minister and I have
rarely heard negative comments about him.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine have been told by Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign they will not be his vice presidential choice, NBC News reported on Friday quoting sources.

Comment by Dan R. | 2008-08-22 21:21:51

I saw that Kaine had been told that he was out. It;
s the lead story on the Fox News website right now. But there was no mention of Bayh also being out. Are you sure about this?

Another news website reported that they’d talked to three employees of a printing company that prints up political paraphenalia and had heard that they were, at that moment, in the process of printing up Obama/Bayh campaign materials.

Hey, everyone! Wish I could join you in Denver, but my doings prevent it. Copying this from The Confluence, so others may have beat me to this, but here’s some of my reflections…

Fox is reporting a lot of activity around Senator Joe Biden’s house, including a chartered jet to go from Chicago to New Castle, DE (private airport). I.e., he’s the likely Veep pick.

Q. Is this part of Obama’s thank you gift to Joe having his son, Beau (Joseph Biden, Jr.), State of DE Attorney General, serve a Delaware arrest warrant in the District of Columbia to Larry Sinclair at the end of Larry’s briefing at the National Press Club in June?

Why don’t we hear this on the MSM/Cable news network shows?

Makes me think there really was more to the Larry Sinclair story. Or, in addition, there was more to the death of Donald Young, who called Sinclair about Obama last year, and deaths of two other Trinity United Church of Christ members.

Do you all remember that account?

Also, Biden voted for the Iraq War resolution, and called Barry well-spoken and “clean”. Presume he meant hygiene – what about Barry’s dirty campaign tactics through the primaries?

Hannity & Colmes has an interview of Biden from last year where he says he would not take a Veep spot if offered. What a difference a year makes.

How do you feel now that you know it’s really not likely to be Hillary for Veep?

Biden is known for quoting without attribution (’88 run for POTUS) and gaffes.

They’re going to need a football stadium to hold those two egos.

Comment by cc | 2008-08-22 21:04:27

The Democrat VP Sham
Email ^ | 8/22/08 | John Douglas

Just got this email from a state senator here in Georgia, no link.

Friends:

This whole episode today on Hussien Obama’s VP choice has been a very well orchestrated sham that has played a fawning, drooling media like a cheap fiddle. Hussien Obama and his team knew full well they could milk a willing national media for all its worth (not much) if they drug this out. Now its 9:15pm on a Friday night and the media, including our own “balanced” Fox News continues to pant and salivate every second waiting for some mystical announcement.

I hope and pray the American people are not the dolts and idiots Hussien and his media friends believe we are. This has been nothing more than another cheap and tawdry chapter in national Democratic Party history.

You know, this is just more example of the hubris that we continue to see coming from the Obama camp. This sort of crap always comes right back around to bite you in the arse. We see it every day. We got to see it last night at the Olympics in Beijing, where the American relay teams fell apart. When people rest on their laurels and take for granted the opportunities that have been given to them, karma has a funny way of smacking you right back in the face. I can only imagine the backhand that Barak Obama will be getting.

Fox is just about splitting a gut and saying it’s looking more and more like Biden. Says there’s a lot of activity around his house. Too funny. This is the guy with the other big ego that said at one point that OB was lacking in experience etc. etc. Biden should be a good choice for the Repubs to chew on for awhile. He’s got the experience alright, but also the towering arrogance. Twin dodo birds. And the beat goes on.

Exactly what I was thinking. Republicans and many Democrats don’t know one Edwards from another. They will know that someone named Edwards was chasing skirts while his wife was dying from cancer. It would be idiotic. Just look at all the crap Obama gets over his middle name, mostly because he gets so defensive about it. It infuriates him and the madder he gets, the more he gets teased.

Imagine everyone following calling the son of a preacher man a whoremonger.

Comment by Matthew Weaver | 2008-08-22 20:54:46

Chet would solve one challenge for the Dear Leader: he would not overshadow him with experience and celebrity. As we are finding that Obama is still changing his positions on issues, maybe Chet isn’t so far off as suggested. But, does Chet Edwards want to become the losing VP on Obama’s losing ticket?

And no vetting of Clinton? So Obama thinks there was no need to tell the truth several months ago to seriously consider Clinton as VP (though I’ve always thought she’d be foolish to accept it) and is he now confirming what Dean and Brazile have suggested that the Dear Leader’s new Democratic Party not only doesn’t need, but doesn’t want her supporters?

Yep, the Obama train wreck is gathering steam…

Really.

Love how these phony-ass Obama stooges keep trying to feign indifference each time they come and post here.

Obamabots know they’re not wanted here. The truth is, however, they can’t stop coming here because they can’t afford to. It is crystal clear to them that it will only take a fraction of cheated Hillary supporters to hand John McCain a huge victory in the GE. And they lack the charm, poise, sophistication, grace and tact to win us over.

So they come to us, acting like complete assholes, to try to FORCE us to vote for that sleaze. And they’re failing miserably.

Be braced and ready for a huge dogfight Hillary/McCain supporters. The Obama insane asylum is on the Titanic. But they’re the only ones who don’t realize it yet. Realization should be setting in for them around the Republican convention in September.

Since the Obama/DNC theft of the Democratic nomination in June, this blog and many other Hillary/McCain blogs and forums have only been receiving a “sprinkling” of Obama nuts. After the conventions, there will be an influx of those idiots on No Quarter and other sites as their desperation deepens.

I’m personally hoping that Larry is seriously considering blocking those fools after the Republican convention.

You’ll really never know how many “disgruntled” people voting against your choke candidate there are. Maybe it’s 9 million. Gore lost by 537 votes. We know of several states that will never vote for Obama. There’s 6,000 in Israel. Sounds like a landslide to me, dumbass. So, why do you come by here for a laugh? You’re the one voting for a loser.

Comment by Newly Independent | 2008-08-23 09:11:34

It won’t matter bot. Obama will lose to McCain. He can’t lose 9 Mil democrat voters and expect to win.

This number’s suddenly A LOT bigger now that that loser has picked Joe Biden as his VP running mate. Some Hillary supporters were still holding out hope that she would be chosen to form a “dream ticket.” That’s dead now. So the transition to John McCain will be much easier on them now.

This has got to be the EASIEST race John McCain will ever win. The White House will be served to him on a silver platter. I hope McCain enjoys it.

I think it’s HIllbuzz that is reporting that pamphlets are being printed that say Obama/Bayn.

Biden doesn’t make sense to me, Biden is not a second chair kind of person. Especially to someone like Obama who doesn’t have a history of stellar achievement in politics other than he can get the media to follow his every word and step. Considering Paris Hilton and Britney Spears can wrap the media around their little fingers too, I can’t imagine Biden being too impressed. If Biden is going to fetch coffee and carry the briefcases, it’s going to be for someone he admires and I can’t imagine that being Obama.

The Chet Edwards curve is interesting. Could it be that Bayn, Biden and Kaine have all said no? Considering the downturn Obama’s campaign has taken and the fodder for swift-boating, possibilities for vice president may be fleeing faster than ants in a RAID factory.

Out of all of them, Bayn makes more sense to me than anyone else.

Biden is a good party loyalists and may do this because he was asked to do so”for the party”.

It might quell the nerves some dems to vote for Obama. However, I don’t think it will be enough. Joe Biden can talk circles around Obama and McCain, but Biden isn’t running for pres..so it would just show more negatively on Obama. It is the same with Hillary. She can talk and work circles around all of them. The more she would talk the more deficient Obama looks.

Those who wanted Hillary Clinton as the VP for “party unity” and peace..probably to win the election also, are going to be very pissed that she wasn’t even vetted.

The one great advantage to all of this…is that Barack didn’t chose Hillary..not her fault when he looses. The opinion polls wanted Hillary, the party wanted Hillary..too bad so sad for Obama..Thank God

Chet Edwards was mentioned by Pelosi a while agao on George Stephanopolous’s show ( 2 Sundas ago?). He is HER pick: Pelosi wants him as VP; and since Obama needs to kiss up to Pelosi he went ahead and vetted Chet….

CNN reports Kaine is out and that’s a “flurry” of activity in Biden’s home. I say it Evan Bayh but frankly: whatever!!

I am glad if it is NOT HRC : I doin’t want her as VP as I think it would be demeaning for she the (much!) better woman to be on a secondary position to the
less qualified man. But I agree Obama should have gone OUT OF HIS WAY to court HRC as VP and vet her.
But hey; why am I not surprised? OPbama did ZERO NADA
didn’t rasie a finger to help rais emoney to erase her debt. While HRC money people, HER fundraisers hosted

U.S. Secret Service on Way to Biden’s House; Kaine and Bayh Told Nope on Veep
August 22, 2008 10:50 PM

The United States Secret Service has dispatched a protective detail to assume the immediate protection of Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., a source tells ABC News, indicating in all likelihood that Biden has been officially notified that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has selected him to be his running mate.

Sources also tell ABC News that two others said to be finalists for the position of Obama’s running mate — Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and Virginia Gov Tim Kaine — have been told they have not been selected to be Obama’s running mate.

Kaine flew to Denver earlier today, is in Denver tonight and has no plans to leave in the next 24 hours. Bayh is at his Washington, DC, home with his family.

Biden was last seen minutes ago at his Wilmington estate where his extended brood is gathering.

The Obama campaign would not comment, but Obama mentioned Biden twice in speeches on the trail this week, both times heralding his legislative leadersip in East Asia.

At the VFW convention in Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday, Obama said, “we must help Georgia rebuild that which has been destroyed. That is why I’m proud to join my friend, Senator Joe Biden, in calling for an additional $1 billion in reconstruction assistance for the people of Georgia.”

And in Chesapeake, Virginia, Friday night, Obama heralded Biden’s efforts to provide economic assistance to Afghanistan.

“I joined with people like Joe Biden to increase a billion dollars of investment,” he said. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/08/with-veep-specu.html

Chet Edwards is from Texas and so am I. I was a delegate to the Texas Democratic Convention in June. He gave a speech and was riding high and was full of himself. A friend and I went to him and asked him in front of several people why he as a superdelegate was supporting Obama when his district overwhelming supported Clinton. He said he has a right to vote however he wants. I, and my friend too, reminded him that his personal vote is his to vote as he pleases but as a representative of the people of the district, he should vote the will of the people. It was a Kodak moment and needless to say, he wasn’t too happy to have been confronted.

‘Just Words’ That Joe Biden Would Like To Forget
The curse of a loose mouth and Nexis.

By Jim Geraghty

The fun thing about an Obama-Biden ticket is that the McCain campaign can point to a new awkward comment by Joe Biden — either on the importance of experience, in praise of McCain, or in support of invading Iraq — that contradicts the stands and qualities of the Democratic nominee for every day from now until Election Day.

On McCain:

Biden, on a post-debate appearance on MSNBC, October 30, 2007: “The only guy on the other side who’s qualified is John McCain.”

Biden appearing on The Daily Show, August 2, 2005: “John McCain is a personal friend, a great friend, and I would be honored to run with or against John McCain, because I think the country would be better off, be well off no matter who…”

On Meet the Press, November 27, 2005: “I’ve been calling for more troops for over two years, along with John McCain and others subsequent to my saying that.”

On Obama:

Reacting to an Obama speech on counterterrorism, August 1, 2007: “‘Look, the truth is the four major things he called for, well, hell that’s what I called for,’ Biden said today on MSNBC’s Hardball, echoing comments he made earlier in the day at an event promoting his book at the National Press Club. Biden added, ‘I’m glad he’s talking about these things.’”

Also that day, the Biden campaign issued a release that began, “The Biden for President Campaign today congratulated Sen. Barack Obama for arriving at a number of Sen. Biden’s long-held views on combating al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan.” That release mocked Obama for asking about the “stunning level of mercury in fish” and asked about a proposal for the U.S. adopt a ban on mercury sales abroad at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing.

Assessing Obama’s Iraq plan on September 13, 2007: “My impression is [Obama] thinks that if we leave, somehow the Iraqis are going to have an epiphany” of peaceful coexistence among warring sects. “I’ve seen zero evidence of that.”

Speaking to the New York Observer: Biden was equally skeptical — albeit in a slightly more backhanded way — about Mr. Obama. “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

Also from that Observer interview: “But — and the ‘but’ was clearly inevitable — he doubts whether American voters are going to elect ‘a one-term, a guy who has served for four years in the Senate,’ and added: ‘I don’t recall hearing a word from Barack about a plan or a tactic.’”

Around that time, Biden in an interview with the Huffington Post, he assessed Obama and Hillary Clinton: “The more people learn about them (Obama and Hillary) and how they handle the pressure, the more their support will evaporate.”

December 11, 2007: “If Iowans believe campaign funds and celebrity will fix the debacle in Iraq, put the economy on track, and provide health care and education for America’s children, they should support another candidate,” said Biden for President Campaign Manager Luis Navarro. “But I’m confident that Iowans know what I know: our problems will require experience and leadership from Day One. Empty slogans will be no match for proven action on caucus night.”

Also that night, Biden said in a campaign ad, “When this campaign is over, political slogans like ‘experience’ and ‘change’ will mean absolutely nothing. The next president has to act.”

September 26, 2007: Biden for President Campaign Manager Luis Navarro said, “Sen. Obama said he would do everything possible to end the war in Iraq and emphasized the need for a political solution yet he failed to show up to vote for Sen. Biden’s critical amendment to provide a political solution in Iraq.

December 26, 2006: “Frankly, I think I’m more qualified than other candidates, and the issues facing the American public are all in my wheelbarrow.”

On Iraq:

Biden on Meet the Press in 2002, discussing Saddam Hussein: “He’s a long term threat and a short term threat to our national security… “We have no choice but to eliminate the threat. This is a guy who is an extreme danger to the world.”

Biden on Meet the Press in 2002: “Saddam must be dislodged from his weapons or dislodged from power.”

Biden on Meet the Press in 2007, on Hussein’s WMDs: “Well, the point is, it turned out they didn’t, but everyone in the world thought he had them. The weapons inspectors said he had them. He catalogued — they catalogued them. This was not some, some Cheney, you know, pipe dream. This was, in fact, catalogued.”

Biden, on Obama’s Iraq plan in August 2007: “I don’t want [my son] going [to Iraq],” Delaware Sen. Joe Biden said from the campaign trail Wednesday, according to a report on Radio Iowa. “But I tell you what, I don’t want my grandson or my granddaughters going back in 15 years and so how we leave makes a big difference.” Biden criticized Democratic rivals such as Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama who have voted against Iraq funding bills to try to pressure President Bush to end the war. “There’s no political point worth my son’s life,” Biden said, according to Radio Iowa. “There’s no political point worth anybody’s life out there. None.”

The article continues…

Think of No Quarter as a handy blueprint for coping with your upcoming defeat in November, after which you might learn to present a qualified, reasonably intelligent candidate all Democrats can support.

“please spare me the bs about how you’re all here because of “country before party”.”

No problem! We’re not about repeating the meaningless mantras you’ve been conditioned to accept as inerrant gospel!

“you’re a sackful of petulant children, and like children, the incredible things that come out of your mouths are often hilariously entertaining.”

Considering Barky’s voting record and his willingness to actually exterminate newborn Americans, maybe another source of personal amusement might be in order?

“as i’ve said before, please don’t stop doing what you’re doing…”

Just make sure we get what we want, and we will, I PROMISE!!

“it’s comforting to know there’s always a place i can come for a good laugh.”

Remember, you’ll be in dire need of comfort and succor soon enough!

It might happen sooner than you suspect!

For, if you are defeated, in the year 2008, by either a bunch of “Rethugs” or an allegedly defeated Democratic nominee, what does that say about your discernment, and YOUR choices?

We’ll leave the light on for you!

Joe Biden, in 2007: ‘I think he [Obama] can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is.’

Man, the attack ads on Obama featuring quotes from his own running mate are just going to be brutal:

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos: “You were asked is he ready. You said ‘I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.’”

Sen. Biden: “I think that I stand by the statement.”

(ABC’s “This Week,” 8/19/07)

Picture the voice over: “If his own running mate has doubts about whether he’s ready for the job… shouldn’t you?”

I think Biden’s stance on the Iraq war will come under scrutiny. If I remember correctly, he drew up a ridiculous scheme to split Iraq into three separate countries. I believe the Iraq Study Group even rejected it as unworkable. That’s not exactly the kind of foreign policy “expertise” you want on a presidential ticket.

No one wanted Biden for president and no one will want him for VP either. Another good choice.

If we end up with an Obama/Biden ticket, it should be a fun autumn. Senator Biden doesn’t excel at being reined in and even if Obama does find a way to silence Biden, there’s a wealth of video statements from Biden that will undermine Obama’s campaign.

From my knowledge, Biden is at the opposite end of the Democrat spectrum, a conservative Democrat. But then again, the more we know about Obama, liberal doesn’t describe him.

Senator Clinton has got to stage an upset. As amusing as it would be to see Biden undermine Obama for the next few months, the fear that Obama will “fix” the election software and machinery and end up president is too much for me.
