Cyclops and the Sirens to Open for Obama

web5greektemple_edited-6.jpg

Hello? Excuse me? Pssst… The Senator is running for President, not a Grammy.

A miniature Greek Temple to accept the nomination for President of the United States? And that is supposed to help us regular folk relate to Obama how?

As Katherine Kersten states in the Minneaplois Star Tribune “Rock concert staging? Podiums that rise from under the floor? Speaking from a ‘Greek temple’? Karl Rove could not have concocted worse symbolism for the ‘common man’ message that Obama is attempting to send to American voters.”

We can only hope that starting tomorrow the campaign will take itself and the Ameican people seriously. So far, it’s all Las Vegas glitz and teleprompter-read speeches to me. How about, for starters, some good, simple, old-fashioned American Town Hall meetings with John McCain so the people can make some real comparisons between the two candidates on things that actually matter?

Am so sick and tired of hearing this is history in the making, geez we already know he got the nomination but every news anchor has to milk this thing to the max.

Anchor after anchor on FOX has to say its history in the making I swear they way they are acting guess America surprised itself that a black man is running for President.

I would of really liked one of news media people to ask if this was all necessary, that is sure a lot of dollars being tossed out, I guess simple is not a word for the democrats, and since its the first black man I guess the sky is the limit now.

Comment by Kelvin Hearts PUMAs | 2008-08-28 18:49:26

Because it ishistory being made. Stop hating and enjoy the moment. Because if Hillary won, they’d be doing it as well. Probably even bigger.

Comment by trixta | 2008-08-28 19:23:56

Yeah, right! Spoken by an Ozombie HRC hater! Obama and the DNC were out to destroy the Clintons period! And didn’t Donna Brazille say that “we have to destroy the Dem Party” in order to remake it? Why else has she been in close contact with Karl Rove these past couple of years? It is clear to me that their common enemy is and has always been the Clintons. We’ll you now have the Party without a good chunk of Clinton/FDR Dems, so just deal with the consequences of what you and your Chosen One have wrought.

So much for unity!

Comment by Susanclare | 2008-08-28 19:25:09

I wouldn’t bet on that. In spite of the daily crap spewed over and over by the MSM Senator Clinton has a great deal of class and humility…she would have never wanted such a thing…

Really? Get serious. This is your guy and if you can’t see this is over the top then you’ve had a lobotomy. This is “not” American Idol. Hello??? Try President of the United States, which carries a certain gravitas and respect.

But please, keep on kidding yourself that a Greek Temple background has anything to do with electing a POTUS or that smoke and mirrors will win the day.

It’s laughable. It’s also crass.

I guess to you there is not big difference in accepting a nomination in a place where you spent thousand of dollars to prepare, to go next door and do it all over again spending twice as much as you originally spent just to stoke your ego.

All the media coverage of the DNC convention is not enough, it just had to have a bigger audience 26,000 was too small of an attendance 80,000 sounds and looks better.

Man if you Obama supporters don’t think that was a bit much and over the top I would hate to see what Obama would do if he got his hands on the public purse

Don’t blame BLUE. He or she is most likely a college student. Having donated $2300 to the Obama campaign, which could have been better served to pay some college loans, he or she now finds him/herself sitting on the floor eating a wonderful box of Kraft Mac and Cheese watching her money being used for such a noble cause. Really it isn’t any worse than the jaunt through the ME and Europe is it? How about the trip to Hawaii? A fool and his/her money is soon parted. Congrats Blue. Enjoy your party Obama. You do realize people WORKED for that money right? Some little girl had to do without the doll she wanted or some little boy didn’t get the baseball glove he wanted. Don’t worry it’s all good YOU deserve it more. Enjoy the party. Have a drink on Blue. Oh nevermind Blue and people like him/her payed for all the drinks.

Comment by Monet | 2008-08-28 18:12:12

Didn’t I read back in June that the DNC’s budget for the convention was $70 million? Or was that the amount they needed to raise by mid-July to be on track for financing the convention?

According to a NY Times article from last month, the DNC was $6 million over budget in their plans to renovate the Pepsi Center. They spent $100k per month renting offices in downtown Denver that were twice as large as they needed and filled them with rental furniture costing $50k per month. In June when the Obama campaign took over the convention planning, “his aides are increasingly frustrated, as the event nears, at organizers who they believe spent too freely, planned too slowly and underestimated actual costs. The Obama campaign has dispatched 10 people to Denver to help “get a handle on the budget and make hard decisions” about what has to be done and how to move forward, said Bill Burton, a campaign spokesman.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/06/us/politics/06convention.html

It doesn’t sound like the ten Obama people sent to Denver to “make hard decisions” got around doing that. Which is understandable, they only had two months to turn Invesco Field into Ancient Greece.

Shall we have a contest to guess how much the DNC spent? I’ll go with $104, 854,397.43.

Comment by Kelvin Hearts PUMAs | 2008-08-28 18:54:00

They would have spent the same amount if not more if Hillary would have won. Both RNC and DNC will have spent nearly a billion dollars on their respective campaigns.

zOMG! And he had a convention, too! And debates! You are soooo right! It’s exactly like Bush - and Clinton, Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, Eisenhower…

Comment by Judy | 2008-08-28 18:17:09

Um..not exactly. All of the presidents that you mentioned, with the exception of Kennedy, gave their speeches right at the sites of their conventions. By spending what has to be a lot of money on a stadium and set that are not needed (when the DNC is broke) seems to me to be poor judgment.

Here’s part of what the Daily Mail (UK) had to say:

Party officials fearing what Americans might think of ‘Obamapolis’ say privately that it was dreamed up before his recent ‘rock star’ visit to Berlin, where he drew a crowd of 200,000 - and Republican criticism for being out of touch with ordinary Americans.

Had they anticipated that, the affair in Colorado would have been more low-key.

But his grandiose style lends itself to accusations of hubris - the Greek word for pride before a fall - and he was advised to keep things simple as he made an impassioned call for change.

Democrats are still level-pegging with the Republicans in the polls, getting no appreciable ‘bounce’ from their convention despite enormous coverage. All this despite the deep unpopularity of the Bush administration, McCain’s age - he turns 72 today - and before the Republican convention next week.

The DM is also reporting that “a full scale replica of Air Force One fuselage” arrived at Invesco Field. Don’t you think that this is over the top? The DM does (check out the title of the article).

Comment by elise | 2008-08-28 17:58:39

The post is about ridiculous behavior, Blue. How much of GWB is he going to emulate? He had his ridiculous “seal” which his campaign stopped using because of ridicule, but they can’t take this one back. These are phony columns, phony everything and it will be used in Republican ads, you can count on it and it will be tacky and vulgar. I’m pretty sure I missed GWB speech in 2004 because I could no longer stand the sight of him and i will miss this speech because it is just as meaningless. This reminds me of pictures I have seen of “motels” with red wallpaper, mirrors on the ceiling and vibrating beds. But, it has provided some comic relief from the disaster of the Democratic Party convention. All that’s missing is passing out some sandals and laurel leaf crowns for all the cult followers.I wonder if they have sent out a memo for the dress code: white togas, no green ones allowed. The Republicans had their green “flip flops” too you know. Another example of the stupidity of politicians.

Comment by Blue Intrigue | 2008-08-28 18:09:46

Wonderful ‘toon, Pat! The whole thing is surreal. A set made by Britney’s set people? Why?

I gotta tell ya, there’s something psychologically disturbing about the whole thing. He comes out from that slightly curved replica of a piece of the US Capitol or the White House, walks down the catwalk onto a round, raised island that looks like a circular stepped pyramid, and it will make him look isolated and vulnerable. It’ spooky. Not very feng shui, either.

Oh, one last comment. It’ll be dark when BO speaks and the stadium will be all sparkly with thousands of flashes from little cameras. Every flash you see will be an idiot who didn’t read the owner’s manual. You see, the flash has a range of about 10 to 15 feet so all those photos will be blank. The only way you can take a picture under those conditions is to turn the flash off and the camera will take a time exposure. Use the flash and you might get the top of the head in front of you.

It could be that Obama will come out dressed like Ceasar and camp it up and laugh at himself, thereby, making himself the butt of the joke and laughing with the Republicans.

Then, the columns will disappear into the floor, he will change into simple long sleeve (rolled up) shirt, casual pants, no tie and the stage turns into a simple podium with just a man.

That is the only thing that could keep this from being a complete train wreck. Mock himself, jokes on him, and he takes the wind out of the Repubs’ sails by being able to laugh at himself. Voila! Obama scores one for the common touch!

Riiingggggg!!!! Oops…sorry, that was just a dream. Obama cannot laugh at himself nor can he find anything at all humorous about himself which is why he will deliver his “I Am a Dream” MLK ripoff:

“Four score and 7 years ago, I had a dream that we have nothing to fear but fear itself!

We hold these truths to be self-evident that we should not ask what our country can do for us, but what can we do for our country? My nomination is one small step for a man, but a giant leap for mankind!

I actually like the singer who performed the national anthem, Jennifer Hudson. I think she is fantastic. Everything else about the Parthenon coming to life this evening is an embarassment.

Ironically, or perhaps not, Hudson was an American Idol contestant who came in seventh place during her season. She later went on to win an Oscar for her role in Dreamgirls despite many thinking she would fall back into oblivion. The night she was booted off everyone’s favorite reality show, Elton John claimed that America was racist. (She was in the bottom three with two other African American singers, he was the mentor that week.)

Obama loves the symbolism, doesn’t he? Well, he can go fuck himself. He has lied his way through life, cheating and scheming, handed everything without an ounce effort. Hudson, on the other hand, really did have to work to make a name for herself, starting out at Burger King! Obama can never relate to that kind of story, but he sure as shit tries to paint himself the “raised by a single mother overcoming adversity” dude.

My Afscme union called today with an election poll.
How certain was it that I would vote: Definitely
Would I vote McCain or Obama: I said “As a life-long Democrat who supported Hillary to the hilt, I will be voting for John McCain.” Felt some of that catharsis we were supposed to feel from the convention.

Great art once again, Pat.

Poor people - redistribution of wealth - take from the rich and give to the middle class??????????? Take from the USA coffers and the rich to give to all of his Chicago thug friends.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned!!

Folks this is just a preview of things to come if he is elected.

OMG how can the DNC explain this one.

Seemed like the convention was going better than expected with the Clintons saving their asses. Now, Barky is on the scene with his insane need for grandiosity.

Great cartoon, but to home for more then what you see is very very optimistic of you. Where is the proof that there is more? This reminds me of the saying that goes something like “the man who would be king or hail Caesar.”

With no experiences relevant to the job, all that Obama and his people can give us is a well choreographed fantasy. False fronts, bright lights, loud music, a well scripted performance and puff, it’s magic.

I was also very disappointed in all of the speeches given by Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, and others. I know the DNC wants to show that they can create unity, but at what price. First Obama will not run because he does not even know where the men’s room is. All of a sudden he is qualified to be president. Then Joe Biden, Richardson, Bill Clinton, and Hillary talk about the importance of experience and that all Obama did was give a speech. Then with three months of campaigning Obama is all of a sudden the most qualified person to be president. Where did all of these qualifications come from?

In my opinion, the only honest people I saw was Michelle Obama who consistently frowned unless people said exactly what she wanted to hear, and Warner who would rather loose his place in line then say what he did not believe in.

I like the chariot ride with the plumed helmet and thunderbolt tattoos. Or, the River Styx running through the stage. Or Nobama as Narcissus, gazing longlingly into a pool of water. The Cyclops looks strikingly familiar, say Howard Dean, with his eye only on “The One” candidate from the get-go (so much for fair, elected party officials!) And the two lovely sirens are definitely Nancy Pelosi with her lovely botoxed face and the signature song of her fabulous PelosiPAC money to woo the delegates to vote against the will of the people of their states. And then we have Donna Brazile, the voice of the cable TV channels, shrieking out her siren song of “STOP THE HATE” accompanied by the lovely voice of her almighty cell phone that spreads healing to the errant masses of non-believers. If some one had told me this would be happening in the USA two years ago, I would have sworn they were on an acid trip from the ’60s. As Larry says, “You can’t make this shit up; it is just too unbelievable!”

It is insane but scary—are we in the final stages of bread and circuses? As bizarre as this seems to me and most of you, is this what we have come to in this country? Is everything a rock star moment? Is 15 minutes of celebrity or proximity thereto the road we have taken? This country was stupid enough to elect the first version of this phenom politico not once, but twice. What makes any of you think the third time will not happen Nov. 4.? I think you could make a case that there are millions out there with their little votes in hand who voted for GWinexperienceBush twice and figure the theatrics were right on, it was just the wrong flavor, wrong suit and BO has all those great features of the shrub but isn’t wearing that Republican suit and has a whole different kool-aid.

Another great cartoon, Pat. Renting Invesco field is an embarrassing pompous display of arrogant ambition and ego. I guess the White House grounds weren’t available for rent or were too small for his pre-coronation ceremony. As for the expense, never fear, the Obamabots are busy already extracting money from everyone within reach by email or phone whether they can afford it or not. And as for raising money to help pay off Hillary’s campaign debt. Only a trickle. A penny fund raising effort for the person who so has so selflessly thrown her support for his majesty in order to get a Democrat in the White House. Keep the cartoons and commentary coming in the weeks ahead, Pat. They help keep us focused on reality as the anointed one continues his campaign to bamboozle those who haven’t yet fallen victim to his chicanery and boundless ambition.

One thing I am very sure of…this kind of Sh– has no place in the election of a President…when people are hungry, homeless, and children don’t have clothes and supplies for school!
Some way, some how, the American people need to STOP this!!!

Comment by Sam Copeland | 2008-08-28 21:19:19

The problem with Obama’s Greek temple inauguration is:

1. Plays directly into and reinforce’s McCain’s strategy that Obama is a rock star and out of touch with Americans.

2. It sends the wrong signal to Americans. A convention is a time for the candidate to tell Americans exactly his/her vision for America and how the lives of Americans will be better if the candidate is elected. Instead of appearing in the luxury of a Greek temple, Obama should be telling Americans about his plan for keeping Americans in their homes in the wake of foreclosures and his symbolism should be related to that plan.

3. The temple is about Obama. A smart leader would his/her convention about the American people and their dreams and aspirations.

Comment by Kirsten | 2008-08-28 21:19:22

Great cartoon! Searching for “greek temple” on Google Images, copying someone else’s picture without citation, posterizing the image, and drawing some pretty weak art on top of it. Then, slap your name on top of it all. Finally, go back and edit the caption in Paint or something because you couldn’t remember how to spell “Cyclops” (hint: no E at the end).

Stay classy, No Quarter.

Comment by Pat Racimora | 2008-08-28 23:41:44

Gee Kirsten, Is this the best you can toss? You got it half wrong in terms of the process–and if you don’t like the “weak art” that’s OK. Art (and especially cartooning art) just IS–people judge it their own way.

As for me, I love doing this. It’s a way to make one’s statement without having to use many words. If you can do better, give it a try.

But what REALLY interests me is why you were stalking this cartoon. It was up two hours before I discovered the spelling error (so sue me). What’s up with that????
