Bristol Palin Pregnant

From Reuters:

ST. PAUL (Reuters) - The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.

…Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter’s pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.

In my opinion this is the most stunning news of the campaign so far. A conservative candidate (yes, McCain IS conservative, no matter what Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh think) chooses an unknown woman governor to be his running mate in a move to appeal to the skeptical conservative base, knowing that the governor’s unmarried teenage daughter is pregnant.

The man has brass balls.

I’m literally speechless, so please register your thoughts below.

This is one more way sor a lot of us to relate to the Palin Family:

Millions of us have experienced the same thing
with our own daughters. We coped with it, too.

Another reason to relate with Governor Palin.

No matter how open I am with the abortion issue,
I was very happy that my barely 16-year-old decided to not go through with it, even ‘though
I did give her the option….

I raised that grandchild. She is 25-years-old
today, happily married and has gifted me with
two beautiful and loving great-grandaughters,
5 and 7 who make my ‘golden years’ totally happy!

What kind of mother raises a daughter that gets pregnant at 17 outside of wedlock?

Sounds like she should have spent more time with her family talking about values and good judgment instead of being a lapdog for big oil/gas in Alaska.

Comment by TexasBuckeye | 2008-09-01 12:31:23

So at 17, you thought your parents were the smartest people on the planet and listened to everything they said and did everything they asked and believed everything they believed, right?

Okay, just checking. So did I. (snark)

Tinker69 (is the “69″ freudian? And at what, pray tell, are you “tinkering”?), Gov. “Breeder” Palin is a member of “Feminists for Life,” a group that contends that even birth control pills are “abortifacients” — a chemical that causes abortions — and, therefore, “Breeder” Palin is against birth control pills.

So, in response to you, doing what I can only conclude was done during some kind of arduous, one-handed typing while you were tinkering away with the other: “Do a little research.”

Palin opposes abortion even if her own daughter was raped. That is a more extreme pro-life view than even mainstream Republicans hold.

She opposes sex education, including teaching our children about contraception, and instead prefers abstinence-only education…which didn’t work so well with her daughter.

The same social conservatives who strongly condemned Jamie Spears, Juno and Knocked Up for promoting teen pregnancy and pregnancy out of wedlock will now rally around Palin to show their true contradictory nature.

Comment by katmandu | 2008-09-01 13:02:36

Alyssa, from the tone of your comments I do not think you are interested in any child’s welfare, but rather just want to grind a political ax.

Comment by TexasBuckeye | 2008-09-01 13:06:04

What you don’t understand about the opposition to sex education by most conservatives is this:

They don’t want school officials to teach their children about these sensitive issues. They want to have these conversations with their children in private at home away from other children where both the child and parent are free to speak their minds, ask open questions, and give detailed answers.

Sex education in school is not designed for the individual student’s needs, concerns, or fears. Children are not free to ask questions because they fear they’ll be made fun of by other children. Teachers cannot give personal advice that might apply to the individual child’s needs.

Conservatives aren’t against sex education, just sex education from the State.

Comment by Alyssa | 2008-09-01 13:14:40

It’s laughable you insult the great teachers of our nation as unable to relate to our children about something so basic as human sexuality.

And yet, you think “social conservative” parents will be much more open about the topic with their children (or that their children aren’t afraid to openly discuss that topic with them…plenty are).

Palin also wants to teach creationism in our science classes. What’s next, voodoo? Islam? Buddha? No thanks; teach my children science in school, I can take them to Sunday school myself.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Comment by BernieO | 2008-09-01 13:20:55

I am still not sure about this. I read a quote where she said it should be discussed but was not speaking about science classes. Many people who fight creationists do not oppose discussing the issue in non science classes such as comparative religion. She may favor teaching it in science class but I have not seen the evidence for this.

I still remember seeing how tenderly Bristol cradled that little baby at the Dayton, OH rally. Even some cynical O bots remarked that she kissed little Trig in a motherly fashion. That’s because she is excited about being one herself in a few months. No one forced her to do nything. She seems like someone who looks up to her mother and couldn’t wait to be a mother herself.

Comment by Elizabeth Reilly | 2008-09-01 14:31:46

No, Palin does not want to ‘teach creationism in schools’. What she said was that she thought it could be good to expose students to a variety of views on the beginnings of life. She said that she would not mandate that school boards teach creationism. Get your facts straight.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-09-01 18:04:14

My understanding is that she didn’t even go that far.

What I read that she said was that the topic should not be prohibited IF a STUDENT RAISED THE QUESTION.

She did not say teach it, she did not say insert it into the curriculum, she said it shouldn’t be “verboten” like some sort of Third Rail, if someone in the class brought it up.

Which is sort of logical, really. Aren’t people generally suspicious when they’re told they CAN’T talk about something?

Comment by James (San Jose) | 2008-09-01 14:31:03

And Public Health officials are in almost lock-step agreement that schools need to educate the children because they are not getting informed at home.
If the parents are ignorant about sex, they can’t teach their children. And ignorant children get into bad situations.

Every other industrialized nation has comprehensive sex ed in their classrooms. Results: significantly lower teen pregnancy rates than the U.S.A.

Really? China? Japan? Russia? Middle East countries?

Results: significantly lower teen pregnancy rates than the U.S.A.

Research suggests that teenage pregnacies have more to do with poverty than lack of sex education.

Research also suggests that sex education programs do more to reduce disease than teenage pregnancy.

Well then, Gov. Palin’s “when a doughnut and a hotdog are married and want to express their love physically, as any good perishable food item eventually does” speech must not have been completely understood by her daughter. Perhaps Gov. Palin herself needs to “bone up” (pun intended) on the “sex” part of “sex education.”

Maybe it’s time that we have a statewide, Alaskan town meeting to discuss, not “the birds and the bees,” but “pastries with holes in them and meat products shaped like a tube,” so as not to offend the conservatives.

Here’s a conservative parent’s feelings on teaching teens about sex: “Why do we have to talk about sex when teaching our children about sex education? It’s those darn liberals who’re making us talk about it. If it weren’t for them, my daughter and/or son wouldn’t notice that their bodies are changing. It’s because of the Democrats that my daughter/son is discovering the changes in their bodies. Ignorance is bliss. Now, pass the Velveeta!”

I come from a locality where there’s EXHAUSTIVE sex education in the public schools.

There’s also a shitload more teen preganancy than there was back in my day, when there was very LITTLE sex ed.

It’s “fashionable” nowadays for kids to fuck. Accidents are going to happen.

When I was young, it was less common for young teens to be screwing around. The ones that did it were considered “rebellious” …and of course, they were also often the ones who SMOKED!

As Lois Griffin said to her son Chris in a FAMILY GUY episode…. “If she smokes, she pokes!”

Alyssa: Palin would have set herself up for criticism if she had arranged for her daughter to have an abortion. She didn’t. There is no inconsistency here. And by the way, the abstinence-only education movement is a racket. Sensible social conservatives know it doesn’t work, but they’re too deeply invested in it despite its obvious, quantifiable failures. That’s their problem to sort out. And if they want to hypocritically defend Palin’s daughter while criticizing Jamie Lynn Spears and Juno, as far as I’m concerned that just adds to the fun.

Comment by TexasBuckeye | 2008-09-01 13:34:02

Alyssa,

I never said that the teachers couldn’t related to the children. I said they couldn’t give personal advice, they aren’t allowed.

The sex education curriculum is so politically correct that it doesn’t address individual concerns. It’s a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Parents who know the child are in a better position to discuss the details. I don’t want another adult, whose values I don’t know and may not trust if I did, to teach my child about sex.

Yes, plenty of children are scared to talk to their parents about sex. That applies whether or not the parents are conservative or liberal.

No, Palin does not want to teach creationism in schools. Look up the facts. She said she isn’t against having a creationism discussion if it comes up in class. She is not a proponent of State-mandated religious instruction.

You said, no thanks, to teach your child about science in school that you can take your child to Sunday school yourself. That’s exactly my point on sex education. No thanks, teach my child to read, write, add, and subtract. I’ll teach him/her about sex.

Comment by trixta | 2008-09-01 15:00:46

Actually, my husband and I (both progressives) disliked the movie JUNO, primarily because it was just too cavalier about teenage pregnancy, wrapping it up in a veneer of wit and coolness. As it is, many teenage girls have a romantic view of pregnancy, but to pass it off as a COOL thing too is just irresponsible. (This said, I believe in the writer’s right to free speech.)

Yes, the film featured the informative and poignant theme of open adoption and the complicated issues thereof, but come on, June was put forth as a kind of sassy, angst-ridden roll model which has great appeal to teenagers.

After my husband and I saw the film we just looked at each other in amazement. The thought of our teenage nieces and other pre-pubescent girls seeing this movie was quite disturbing.

In any case, I support Palin’s CHOICES for her and her family. Her daughter’s pregnancy is very familiar to many and makes her all the more real and likable!

The Jamie Lynn comparison just won’t fly. Try again.

Jamie was a teen celebrity with millions of very young girl fans. The complaint was that she would set a bad example to her adoring impressionable fans who might want to follow in her footsteps not understanding that Jaimi by virtue of her celebrity status and wealth, would have a much easier time caring for a baby, even if she was immature.

Bristol Palin is not an icon. She represents the millions of young girls in average families struggling with issues of sex and morality. Also, at 17, she is almost of legal age. Jamie was 15 when she got pregnant. The difference of 1 or 2 years in your teen years is light years. Thirteen year olds have nothing in common with 15 or 16 year olds. At 17, you’re in a holding pattern waiting to become legal. Americans have created a society where teens are openly sexually active. What? You think birth control is going to take care of everything? Birth control often fails. And some girls want to become moms as soon as they can. I personally don’t recommend it, but at 17 going on 18, there’s not a whole lot a parent can do in this permissive climate with a girl who longing for a baby and not interested in school and career.

This is where feminism failed. It failed to take into account the natural urges of females and males and instead was determined to push an agenda based on the wonders of the modern independent working women. Some women just want to be moms, have a husband and live a family centered life.

To each his own, I say.

Alyssa, I also believe comprehensive sex education should be offered in public schools as an optional class. It is not something which should be required against the wishes of parents. There is a paradox in your comment IMO. Who are the people who produce the movies you have referenced and why do they push the envelope so far to attract children? These aren’t aimed at adults. At least, most adults prefer something more cerebral. I have always considered myself a liberal, but there are days I am thankful my children are grown and worry about my granddaughters. I wonder if some conservatives have stepped back because they want to protect their children from the promisquity shown in movies and TV and on the Internet. But, I despise what the liberal bloggers are doing with this story and the first one they published which turned out to be a lie and for which they have offered no apologies. It is a morally unjustifiable attack on this family and it has made me feel sick that Dems would do this. Would you mind telling me where you got the information about Gov. Palin? I have read some things she has said in the past and although she is of course, conservative, I have the impression of a completely resonable woman who happens to have a different point of view on somethings, but not fanatical.

Why we don’t know because the Messiah sends his pigs to attack others while being the coward of all cowards ..hiding his own records.

You know… people who have the gall to say things like

“What kind of mother raises a daughter that gets pregnant at 17 outside of wedlock?
Sounds like she should have spent more time with her family talking about values and good judgment instead of being a lapdog for big oil/gas in Alaska.”

should be a member of the neo-cons. As an Obama supporter..you’d fit right in. You must be a member of the New Obama Party. Which is why we are saying NOBAMA.

I hope you aren’t the parent of teenagers. You are asking for trouble if you think that being a stay-at-home, involved mom keeps kids from getting pregnant. It may reduce the risk, but it is no guarantee. I grew up in the fifties when almost everyone’s mom stayed home yet a couple of girls from really nice families ended up pregnant (this was a small town). There were several others that I know for sure had unprotected sex at least a couple of times. In fact I know one of their moms who thought like you and her daughter was more at risk than most.

Do we know for sure that Palin told McCain about this? If not that could be a problem, unless she did not know until now, which is not out of the realm of possibilities.

The only criticism of her that I think has some validity is that she answered a questionnaire when running for governor where she said she approved of abstinence only education, and not explicit sex ed. The evidence is clear that only the latter works. So maybe if she had tried this her daughter would not be pregnant, but even that is no guarantee.
Check out her answers (just scroll down, don’t click on the palinforgovernor link which now goes to McCain’s website.) I am not happy with several of them, although I don’t know that she implemented any of these positions as governor.

Sara Palin is the kind of mother like millions of mothers in this United States of America, me included. I had to get married because I was pregnant, and now my 35 year old son, an engineer, father of two, and an absolutely wonderful human being. Probably a lot better person than you alyssa. He is a tolerant kind and wonderful addition to the human race.

My daughter also had to get married, has three beautiful children, a great husband, and is probably one of the best mother’s I have had the pleasure to take credit for.

My sisters, two, besides myself also had to get married, and that was in the 60’s, daughters of devote Catholics and very good parents. All of their children brought about out of wedlock, are some of the most productive people and parents.

I have to suspect you have no children, for the old saying applies, only by the grace of God go I, should be something you should think and and internalize. Sara Palin is in some very good company and have added to the world in a much more humanity manner than yourself, alyssa.

I was SOOOOO thankful our kid managed to get out of highschool without getting knocked up! Tell you, that youngest one was the scariest kid I ever raised…her frontal lobes just REFUSED to develop!

She’s 20 now, married and just had our first grandson (she has always absolutely loved kids)… while “he” wouldn’t have been my first choice, she is an absolutely FANTASTIC mother who has given us the best grandbaby in the world!

Comment by JML | 2008-09-01 13:33:17

“Had” to get married?

Ideally, children are raised by two parents in the same household, but nobody “has” to get married.

In this case, particularly 17-year-olds.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-01 17:18:10

Perhaps when the state starts issuing licenses to procreate and marry, this nonsense will pass.

This is one more way for a lot of us to relate to the Palin Family:

Millions of us have experienced the same thing
with our own daughters. We coped with it, too.

Another reason to relate with Governor Palin.

No matter how open I am with the abortion issue,
I was very happy that my barely 16-year-old decided to not go through with it, even ‘though
I did give her the option….

I raised that grandchild. She is 25-years-old
today, happily married and has gifted me with
two beautiful and loving great-grandaughters,
5 and 7 who make my ‘golden years’ totally happy!

To Alyssa:
You are an ignorant prude. While I do not condone a 17 year old becoming pregnant out of wedlock, I applaud her decision to have the baby.
As to what kind of mother she must have? The kind that made the girl want to keep the baby and nurture it, unlike so many who have an abortion and then hide the fact that she had sex out of marriage. The kind of mother who instills in her children that a life is precious, and far more important than saving face.
Sarah Palin is the right kind of mother raising her daughter to have the sense of responsibility and courage to do the right thing on her own. God Bless Sarah Palin. Would that we had many more mothers like her.

Or 2.)force feed her birth control pills, perhaps force her to under go a minor medical procedure like an IUD insertion? Neither option is acceptable or realistic. I didn’t have a daughter, but do have a son and we had talked to him about the conseqences of having sex before marriage. He and his girlfriend lived through a very trying time when she thought she was pregnant, marriage plans were being discussed when she got the tests results that she was not. We all had discussed the options available and they were choosing to get married. So, it can happen even if you have a son.

Don’t be so quick to play the blame game until you have walked in the same shoes as Sarah Palin and all of us mothers.

0bama’s band of blogosphere nutjobs are a bunch bonafide idiots.

The more they harp on this, the more people are going to make the obvious comparisons like 70% of children born out of wedlock in the black community, many to teen mothers. If they condemn her for being a bad mother, then they are condemning 0bama’s grandparents and his mother who had sex with a polygamous man with other wives.

McCain is on good stead with this, just as he is with the experience theme. The more they talk about Palin’s inexperience, the more they shed light on 0bama who is at the top of his ticket.

Botheads need to go sit in a corner for awhile and think. They are rolling with some of the stupidest strategies all of which keep coming back to bite them in the butt.

You sound to me like a very hard embittered woman. You were very strict and probably have an old momma’s boy today. How dare you attack a woman of such quality-I’m sure you judge everyone harshly and think only yourself perfect. This woman loves and values life so much that she had her own child even when it had downs syndrome and doctor’s urged her to abort it. This is a woman with a strong heart-something I fear you lack. Your children I’m sure were very obedient and are probably today angry, embittered like yourself and boring as hell,as are you.You would put women back a thousand years. Perhaps you had the opportunity of a rich husband to take care of you while you watched the children at home. Lucky you. For most women it’s a tremendous struggle to balance having to make a living because of the expensive world we live in. For the highly evolved intelligent woman like Sarah Palin, the challenges are even greater because you see all of the inequity in the world and feel it your duty to change it to make a better life for your children and others children. You should be thanking her for the hard work she’s done of beating the good old boy network at their own game and helping all of the citizen’s of Alaska financially. They love her.
For your information I was a mother at seventeen. I was raised by very strict parent’s who allowed me to go nowhere, kept very strict tabs on me and taught me that boy’s were bad. Believe me they were the ideal strict parent’s. In spite or perhaps because of this, I met a seventeen year old boy and because I’d never been taught anything about sex thought I couldn’t get pregnant. Well, I did and decided to keep my wonderful son. Having him changed my life forever. He was my best friend for life until his recent accidental life. Maybe you should stop being so harsh on others and take a look at your own life. Is it perfect, or is that your problem. You’re so bored that you spend your time attacking others. Sarah Palin is great for her family and a great woman to help run this country!

Comment by Seattle Moss | 2008-09-01 15:14:17

Comment by Jackie | 2008-09-01 17:20:31

Fathers can also play a very big part in raising a child so to blame the mom is an ignorant sexist stance.

Miss Palin made a choice and is taking responsibility for her actions.

We should respect her right to choose life for her and her baby.

The Obama folks are proving today that it is physically possible to talk before thinking, because many of the Hillary voters that are up for grabs, the lower income, rural, small town women I grew up with, will totally identify with this. One of the great ironies is that while the Obama cult is having a field day using this to club the Palins, not one of them seems to have stopped to think that their guy, Obama, was brought into the world the exact same way! What ya think the odds are of Olberman and the other Obama Pom Pom girls recognizing the connection to Obama’s conception/birth while they use this to try to skin the Palins?

The fact that you think it is a blessing for a 17 year old to have a baby is beyond reality. Clearly, you have spent no time with 17 year old girls. They are not adult, nor should they be! She should be going to prom and doing pajama parties with her girlfriends. Not changing diapers and breast feeding. Wake up, people

Comment by Lis | 2008-09-01 16:54:26

Leave this child alone, she’s not running for VP it’s her mother. Just because Sarah has a daughter who is pregnant has nothing to do with her being qualified to do her job. A new baby is a blessing from God but Obama thinks it’s a punishment.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-09-01 16:15:21

The point is, it is a PERSONAL decision. It’s not up to anyone but her to decide if she’s blessed, punished, or something in-between.

The governor’s daughter made her PERSONAL decision. And good enough for her.

I don’t recall seeing the name of BRISTOL PALIN on any ballot, or placed in nomination at any convention, so my view is that this private citizen/teenager should be left the fuck alone to the extent possible, given her now-famous parent.

She needs all the privacy she can be afforded at this stressful time in her young life.

I know McCain didn’t like it when his special needs daughter got raked over the coals by Bush. Even the media had some “fun” with that “illegitimate black baby” nonsense. I’m sure that his thoughts went back to that time when he was vetting Palin. SHE’S the candidate–not her teenaged daughter.

Ditto, and she comes from a good family that will stand behind her. My daughter got pregnant in her senior year in high school, she was 17. Then gave birth to her daughter when she was 18. She’s a great mama. Breast fed her till she was almost a year. Got a job, paid for all her clothes, her medical. Of course I’m a little bit prejudice when it comes to her. I think it was something in the water. Her, and all her freinds did, but she didn’t allow it to stop her. Nor did any of her friends, they are all business owners or went on to college and have great jobs. She and her husband own two businesses. One they just do for fun, and when they want to. The other they’re doing great in. They recently had a baby which was a true blessing after what she’d just been through less than 2 years ago. Now they’ve informed me they want one more. They also just had their home built, which I’m jealous over, she has kitchen cabinets galore. You can never have too many kitchen cabinets. ;)

STATEMENT FROM SARAH AND TODD PALIN

For Immediate Release

Contact: Press Office

Monday, September 1, 2008

703-650-5550

ARLINGTON, VA — Today, Sarah and Todd Palin issued the following statement regarding today’s Reuters story:

“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.

“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”

Palin confirms daughter’s pregnancy
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/palin-confirms-daughters-pregnancy-915378.html

McCain officials said the news of the daughter’s pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called “mud-slinging and lies” circulating on liberal blog sites.

According to these rumors, Sarah Palin had faked a pregnancy and pretended to have given birth in May to her fifth child, a son named Trig who has Down syndrome. The rumor was that Trig was actually Bristol Palin’s child and that Sarah Palin was the grandmother.

A senior McCain campaign official said the McCain camp was appalled that these rumors had not only been spread around liberal blog sites and partisan Democrats, but also were the subject of heightened interest from mainstream news media.

“The despicable rumors that have been spread by liberal blogs, some even with Barack Obama’s name in them, is a real anchor around the Democratic ticket, pulling them down in the mud in a way that certainly juxtaposes themselves against their ‘campaign of change,’” a senior aide said.

That Sarah is not a good enough mindful mother.

Just like what the rightists would do if it were Obama’s daughter.

Bad news, though I guess it “humanizes” Palin, gives her a fault, so jealous women might look more kindly on her.

You don’t need to be a “bot” to see the problem here.

Another problem is McCain trolls are dominating this board of late.

Comment by Mel | 2008-09-01 12:08:41

Hey Ahole, you can make this statement actually?

Just like what the rightists would do if it were Obama’s daughter.

This was Obama’s mother with him, so what you claim is a total denouncement of your candidate you stupid f*ck!

Comment by breeze | 2008-09-01 12:16:21

Hey, how many months’ pregnant was OZero’s mother
when she supposedly married his already married

And how old was HIS mother at that time?

IN THOSE DAYS THAT WAS A SCANDAL, for sure!!!

I well remember…..

This is just more of female bashing by Obama supporters. They truly do hate women.

Being pro-choice includes the decision to have the child. The leftist seem to believe that pro-choice means only allowing abortions. This sounds like typical Marxist theology.

Fine. And what about McCain himself fooling around with Cindy while he was still married to his seriously injured wife????? Whether you McCain people like it or not, this event opens up a very large can of worms. I have a 16-year-old daughter and believe me, I am now appalled that a VP candidate who could easily become president, if McCain is elected, has a family in such disarray. Just more evidence of McCain’s lack in judgment. It is scary to think this man and possibly woman would be in charge of making decisions for the rest of us. Don’t trust either of them. BTW, Palin is under ethics investigation for covering up. That is the issue here–too many cover ups. Who can you trust?

Thats a little vague let me help you:

What about Obama getting a blowjob from Larry Sinclair while smoking crack in the back of a limo and then doing a repeat with larry in his hotel room the next day.

The same Larry sinclair that Joe FillerUp Biden’s atourney general son had arrested in dc in a clear breach of jurisdiction to shut him up and kill any traction the “Barry BLows” story was going to get.

I mean really.

Comment by wry | 2008-09-01 13:35:26

I think it shows that John McCain has finally got his mojo back, after being devastated by the Bush hatemongers in 2000. If you recall, they started a rumor that his dark skinned adopted Bangladeshi daughter was a “bastard black baby” so he would lose South Carolina.

The fact that McCain would find out Palin’s daughter is pregnant, and say it is no big deal, says a lot about his character.

I was going to vote McKinney on GP, since my state will go for Barky any way. I think now I will vote McCain, to register my appreciation for his standing up to the WOMAN HATING left wing.

You “progressives” are worse than George Bush. There is a God and she will punish you for humiliating a pregnant 17 year old.

How come it’s ok to slam a 17 year old who isn’t running for anything, but no one in the msm has shown or talked about the lovely Biden videos where he runs around obviously drunk? He IS running to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency and is supposed to be advising OB on foreign policy etc. How come more is not being made of this which seriously could be dangerous? What is wrong with these people to pressure this kind of cruel garbage and not talk about something that is truly a potential problem for our country? Can we not blast this all over the place and force the msm to take notice? I can’t believe I’m living in reality right now. I keep thinking I’m going to wake up but it hasn’t happend yet. Yikes.

Give me a break. Look at the family of FDR, JFK, Bush I— look at sex and politics on both sides of the aisle. When I look at this, I think at least the Palins seem to have a set of principles about family values that they really live by and they are really a “real” American family who have struggled with some issues that most American families can relate to. There must have been some real pain in this for them and they are trying to do the most loving thing. That is hard for every family. I note that they say their daughter decided to have the baby which seems to indicate that they also gave her the option of not doing so.

When Obama’s mother got pregnant it was a disgrace because most girls back then waited for marriage. The father was even a married man, which is something no one did in the small town I lived in.

Comment by Katherine B. | 2008-09-01 12:47:41

I think this is not such good news. It will be a huge distraction for the McCain campaign. However, I do find it amusing that the MSM, which now seems to be able to uncover every last detail on Gov. Palin, couldn’t be bothered to cover anything the least bit scandalous about Obama - not to mention Edwards! But I’m afraid not too many people will see the irony in that.

Comment by chris | 2008-09-01 13:03:52

Didn’t the msm glorify Brit. Spears sister’s(17 I believe) pregnancy? Didn’t GMA/ABC bring one of the teenage couples from that high school in NE that supposedly had the pregnancy pact going happening on their show for an interview and treat them like celebrities? If they make a big deal out of this then they are the most hypocritical organizations out there. But I guess we already know that don’t we.

As no one can really say how this will unfold politically, it simply provides more evidence that McCain’s “brass balls” (as you put it) cause him to make rash, untested decisions that may or may not harm institutions such as his party or this country.

Comment by dcmediagirl | 2008-09-01 11:59:33

One could argue that a teen pregnancy can put the entire nation at risk.

After all it was the result of a teen pregnancy that we Have the DNC fronting OBAMA as the lead on the ticket.

On the other hand the very fact that that we Have the DNC fronting OBAMA as the lead on the ticket can also be construed as a very strong argument for pro choice.

Palin is a creationist, a point of view totally unfounded by any civil concepts. According to what I read here she says she welcomes the dialog in public schools. Why does she welcome dialog about something that has no basis in anything that should be taught in public school? She has an agenda, and it is religious. I would never have voted for obama, but McCain’s choice has changed my mind, something I didn’t think possible. McCain’s choice is Rovian-think, which as usual does nothing to advance the interests of the country, only the interests of the conservatives. Think bush/cheney.

There is nothing wrong with discussing creationism in schools as a system of thought about how the world came about. My own commitment is that it should be taught as a system of “belief” which it is and not as science which it is not. What I read on Palin and creationism is that she thinks its ok for it to be taught in schools but alongside evolution . If the distinction is made that evolution is a scientific theory and creationism or intelligent design are “beliefs” which are not science since they are not about systematic inquiry and proof, then I think ok. Epistemology is a valid area of inquiry and learning.

Comment by Right On | 2008-09-01 12:06:13

No. The point is that McCain is so cocksure of himself and his instincts that he takes reckless risks — his gambler’s temperament has been well documented. This particular rash decision (picking Palin at the last minute without proper vetting) put his party at risk — which is fine by me, but not so fine to anyone in that party who actually believes the country will suffer if Obama is elected.

The point is this just confirms a pattern of recklessness. My critique has nothing to do with the Palins. It’s about McCain.

This just makes Sarah Palin’s family seem more real to me. I have a daughter who got pregnant at seventeen, and I now have a beautiful grandson who is 2 1/2 years old. This doesn’t fly as that much of a shock anymore. I am POSITIVE that BO’s mom getting pregnant at 18 with half African Barack was far more scandolous in 1960 than this is in 2008. Let’s just hope the baby’s dad isn’t married to someone else, isn’t a Muslim, and Mom isn’t planning on going on Food Stamps to support the baby…oh wait that would be Barack’s heartwarming story…I got confused for a moment. Good Luck and Best Wishes to all of the Palin’s. At least their babies aren’t being left to die in soiled utility rooms…

I have no knowledge of the marriage arrangement between John and Elizabeth Edwards, but since infidelity is a hot-button cultural issue, both of them were irresponsible to their party and the country to run vigorously for president when they both knew about the affair.

Teen pregnancy is the business of the family — but it’s also a hot-button cultural issue that McCain arrogantly chose to adjudicate on his own, before the story had become public.

Of course you folks here and the right wing will try to be proud of the decision, but you’re just doing damage control. No one of you would honestly have supported McCain’s pick if you had a chance to weigh in previously about how badly she was vetted.

Just look at what Scarborough and Buchanan said about Palin BEFORE the pick:

Really well if a young girl that is pregnant can put this country in danger, what about the child that was born to a mother who they say married a man that had several wives?

Hell we are not even sure if they were married as the man they say has no proof of getting a divorce from any of these woman. What about all the half brothers and sisters that this child who is running for President ignores does it not show some kind of strange behavior that can put the country at risk too.

What about the feeling of neglect that this child may have as his white mother was abandon by his black father, man we can psychoanalyze Obama and his problems there are so many, a whole lot more than a woman running for VP that has to announce her daughter is pregnant and not married.

If your really look at it Obama looks more like the individual that will have a lot of insecurities to deal with which should be of concern as to where and when these insecurities may manifest itself.

Well, my grandmother, an ardent Catholic who said the rosary every day, married my grandfather at the age of 16. My first cousin, who has a Master’s Degree, had 3 kids by the time she was 18. (On a scale of 1 to 10, she was about a 9.8)

Now if they wanted to cover this up, the Palins could have gotten the morning after pill, or the RU486 pill, and nobody would have been the wiser. But they believe abortion is killing (I do not, but it still makes me queasy). Kids do this.

The most stunning news of the campaign? Seriously?

I’d say Rev Wright was a little more stunning to average Americans.

What’s stunning is the way the leftist blogs smeared this family for 3 days non-stop in an effort to destroy Palin.

Do you expect an apology from any of them?

How is it that the VP candidate for the GOP has gotten more scrutiny in 3 days than the Dem POTUS candidate?

Think about it:

What else do those bastards in the Obama camp have left but attacks?

One announcement on Friday single-handedly squashed the four-day moron circus that Axelrod & the DNC put on (with the exceptions of Bill’s & Hillary’s speeches.)

Sarah Palin has put the fear of God in the hearts of Obamabrats everywhere.

I was a teenage mom and didn’t have the support of my parents. It wasn’t easy. I did grow up quickly and my values have been formed out of mothering.

Thirty-seven years later, my son is an amazing person who brings such pride and joy into my life.

I admire Todd and Sarah for supporting their daughter. I wish Bristol the best of luck in doing one of the hardest jobs ever.

If you haven’t carried, borne and raised a child, you have no right to pass judgment or even comment.

It is crazy the the party that thought they were more enlightened and progressive can act in such petulant and judgmental ways. They are behaving like Medusa’s parents with the lack of support she had.

Here is a family in public life that is faced with a family experience that is not uncommon, but still makes one vulnerable to personal attacks. They are handling it with grace and dignity and setting an example to many that our unconditional love for our children is more important than anything.

Sarah Palin rocks. All children should have such loving parents.

Strangely, this draws another parallel to Obama’s ‘biography’.Obama’s own mother was very young and unmarried when he was conceived.

This also illustrates Obama’s comment on being ‘punished’ with a baby. And I doubt the left wants to encourage the debate over Obama’s support of infanticide.

Comment by Beckley | 2008-09-01 12:08:54

Speaking of sisters, I expect every women’s organization to speak out on any of the sexism that is directed toward Bristol and Sarah Palin over the issue of motherhood. It is NOT being “punished with a baby.” It is a function of our bodies. No woman should be treated to the nastiness that has consumed the “progressive” blogs during the course of the past 36 hours. It is unspeakable.

Good point!

To my knowledge, N.O.W. has been the ONLY women’s organization that has blasted the MSM and the Obama campaign for the extreme sexism that has taken place during this election year.

Virtually all of the other “women’s organizations” kept their cowardly, crooked mouths shut on the misogyny during the primary. When they did finally speak, they only spoke up to chastize other women for not supporting that sexist fraud Obama!

They better keep their damned mouths shut about Palin’s daughter. As they have already lost enough of their credibility!

While I am personally pro-choice, I respect personal decisions that others make.

Wow…….Well a couple things are true. at least we won’t need to hear her babble on about abstinence since I would bet that is what she and her husband taught their daughter, after all isn’t that what pretty much ALL parents teach. What a mess. Poor kid. I got pregnant in high school a mere 7 years after Roe v Wade and was lucky to have a parent who was level headed enough to understand that a child should not be having a child………Man I feel bad for this girl as I went through this at the same age, and I sincerely hope that media backs off. Listen up ANDREW SULLIVAN and CHEETOS. Just back to my original point. Kids have sex, girls do things they are not comfortable with or ready for nor are boys but their consequences are not quite as dire. This is such an awesome teaching moment for this country, if it is going to be discussed which it will be why can’t we do it in a constructive and mindful way. Just a thought.

It is always a challenge to find a way to make the situations in life, work.

The reality of this is a game to many that are not female and have not had to make difficult choices.

Freedom of choice, that is all we women want. Freedom to wear pantsuits, freedom of religion, freedom to get a great education, freedom to have hobbies of all sorts, freedom to run for office and not have people personally attack the people we love.

The disclosure of this information illuminates the nasty lefts attacks on Palin and their calls for her to produce a birth certificate for he son, who has Downs. Palin is also being attacked by Alan Combes in a personal way about her prenatal care..

If she were a man none of this would be an issue.

Comment by Lee M | 2008-09-01 13:46:32

As much as I like Sean Hannity, I can’t watch over a couple minutes of that show without turning it off.

The daughter is nearly a legal adult. Her age exceeds that of consent in most states. And she is in love with the father, and they’re getting married. It’s very romantic. There was nothing that suggests her daughter was counseled on an abstinence-only birth control method. She just decided she is ready to grow up and be a woman. I’m very happy for her and the whole Palin family.

I can’t help feeling that it was callous of her family to do this to her. What on earth was her mother thinking accepting the VP slot if her daughter is pregnant? That’s just so unkind toward her daughter.

Does this mean that we get John Edwards back? (0+ / 0-)
John Edwards was the first voice we have had in the democratic party since, I don’t know, Roosevelt, that spoke to the plight of the poor and the workers of this country. We let the right kick us in the teeth over his girlfriend, just like we did over Clinton, and he did not speak at the convention. I am not excusing his behavior, but that doesn’t mean we should let the republicans knock us down considering that John McCain did exactly the same thing in his first marriage. The Palin thing just shows that this goes on everywhere.

Might as well put quotation marks around every one of these sewer-sucking statements and attribute them directly to the obama campaign.

They are all made at obama’s behest - at obama’s urging - with obama’s tacit or explicit approval - many of the gutter-dwellers are on HIS payroll - I hear many of these “posts” even come from the obama campaign servers.

It’s hilarious to see what they actually think of most Americans. “White trash” “inbred” “irresponsible.” I’m just guessing most Americans are going to think Obama is out of touch with mainstream values and just not presidential.

When so-called liberals start lecturing a woman about “not being able to manage her own home” or being “reckless” because her water broke while making a speech or that she chose work over family, I know I’ve gone through the looking glass. What a bunch of hypocritical, self-riteous, ignorant a**holes. Sounds like the maddening conversations that I used to be subjected to at Fox “News” Channel.

Comment by wry | 2008-09-01 15:00:25

I love how they call Sarah Palin “white trash” because she will become a grandmother at 44. Barack Obama is 47. His grandmother is 86. She was a grandmother at 39.

Never mind how many of the women Barack Hussein senior impregnated who were teenagers.

Glass houses once more.

I’m already reading stuff from the disciples of the one that Palin can’t be vp when she has so much famly stuff on her plate. Seems to me JFK had a child while president. Obviously the message that may or not come from team O is that only men can balance career and family. While that would make me puke, I almost hope they do it. It would be like pissing into the wind - hurricane wind.

Comment by McHope | 2008-09-01 12:33:20

Well don’t you know if a man is a drug abuser, and sees children as a punishment or allows his children to be taught from the God Damn America church it is never questioned whether he is a ‘good’ parent. The truth is no male politicians’ devious behavior has ever raised such a question.
Parenthood responsibility apparently only applies to female politicians.

I think Mccain kept quiet about this knowing full well the rabid members of the new Dem party would blab all over the internet exactly as they did, using words like “retard” and “slut”. I bet McCain has the screen shots. Now McCain can turn around and use this as an example of the lack of character coming from the Obama camp. They’re attacking an innocent disabled baby and a teen age girl. Attacking children for political purposes.

And Obama thought his wife should be off limits. LOl, that will make a great AD.

Sarah Palin will make an excellent VP, and McCain will suprise everyone by being a far more moderate and inclusive president than he appears to be.

(And, of course, all the clear-headed people know that the McCain/Palin ticket will most definitely prevail over the Obama/Biden one come November.)

If the Obama campaign weren’t a despicable bunch of shitbags, then Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy wouldn’t be an issue at all. That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day. HAHAHA. Her daughter decided to have a baby and get married, and she should quit her job? You sure you’re for women’s rights?

Comment by ohio | 2008-09-01 12:57:34

I don’t think that is the way at all. I mean, come on, she’s damn if she does and damn if she doesn’t by some of you people. Palin is the real woman, juggling all aspects of a career while taking care of her family. I’m sure she and her family discussed this as McCain knew ahead of time. Give them more credit than this. This is really hypocracy at it’s best. I certainly hope that there are those who have a job and family situations that would be also willing to give up their job if their daughter got pregnant. If not, then I wouldn’t be talking.

Comment by jangles | 2008-09-01 15:25:42

Perhaps Sarah Palin accepted the VP challenge because she believed that in the best tradition of American politics, especially at the presidential level, candidate’s children would be off limits. Perhaps she agonized over it and the Palins had a family discussion about it and perhaps her daughter said, Mom this is a great opportunity and honor for you and I will be fine. Do it.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-01 13:10:13

Comment by Gregory | 2008-09-01 14:28:08

Sorry, your arguement is shot to HELL. She’s not 18, she can’t vote for the moment and can’t fight in the armed forces- regardless of what will be in a few months. PERIOD! What planet are you on? Better yet, what are you smoking? And do the republicans know what you’re on?
And yes, she does have a bun in the oven.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-01 18:10:37

She will be 18 when she has her baby. That means when she is a mother, she will also be a legal adult. The age of consent in Alaska is 15. She could get legally married at that age, if her parents supported the decision. But no one forced her to do anything. She had sex with a boy she loves. The law says she was old enough to make that decision. Now she is getting married. When she delivers her baby, she will be a legal adult. Dumbass.

The girl couldn’t have made a choice when her mother has clearly stated her position is that even if her daughter was raped that is no reason to abort. Therte is no CHOICE in that. You must have another option if you make a choice. That is clearly not the case here. Palin women are baby factories with no choice except abstinence!

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-01 13:16:48

Palin’s husband isn’t a Republican. Don’t you think he had some say in how his daughter was raised. After all, the father is supposedly the rock of the nuclear family. His wife is pro-life, and his daughter could have had an abortion if she wanted. She could be pro-choice but decided to follow her mother’s example.

If pro-lifers are doing it right, not imposing their views on you, practicing what they preach and are happy with their lives, then what is the big deal?

How the hell is it her daughter’s fault? Unless she has pulled off an IMMACULATE CONCEPTION (that can’t be since we’ve been told Obama is the next Messiah) it takes TWO to make a baby. You’re empty argument just doesn’t hold up.

Wanna talk about CHANGE? Personally, I am thrilled that McCain had the balls to indirectly snub his nose at a stupid, irrational, nonsensical program such as “abstinence only”…all the while emphasizing how this young woman made this personal CHOICE on her own. BRAVO!

Now THIS is a change I can believe in.

Actions speak louder than words.

Comment by Gregory | 2008-09-01 14:38:18

Unless the holy spirit (and I’m pissing myslef with laughter as I write this) filled her up too, she’s had sex. That was a personal choice (and GOOD FOR HER, I LOVE SEX). A boy (not a man) is involved too. That makes it her responsability. Gosh, no wonder our Hillary lost if her supports are REALLY this stupid!

Comment by fooj | 2008-09-01 15:16:17

Number one… I was NOT a Hillary supporter. I support ONE PERSON, ONE VOTE. You know, a democratic process! Number two… It is you who displays your wanton ignorance by emphatically proclaiming that the responsibility lies solely on the young woman. Number three… WHO THE FUCK ASKED YOU ANYWAY? How does this involve YOU personally in any way, shape or form?

I’m certain the Palins waited desperately by their phone hoping that YOU would shower them with your wisdom before Bristol and the “boy” made this personal decision. How did they survive without your neanderthol input?

“Our Hillary”??? I just about wet myself when I read that. Hillary supporter, my ass.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-01 18:15:09

Any “boy” ca make a baby - we’re talking about teenagers here - but it takes a “man” to be a father. Isn’t that how it goes? So far, so good, though. Bristol and Levi are getting a crash course in adulthood. It seems once you get potty training down, you can join them in growing up.

Comment by ohio | 2008-09-01 13:14:19

Actually it doesn’t seem as bad as you would want to paint it. You’ve just been listening to the dem spin machine too long. I was a dem and an evangelical at the same time. I know quite a few evagelicals who have had kids who got pregnant. It happens. And believe me, all they really preach is responsibilty, which is what these kids are going to show by keeping and raising the child, while they get married. They are the ones who are living with the responsibilty, not you or me. But it does dispose of the fact that if she is five months pregnant, then Sarah couldn’t be hiding the fact that it was Bristol was actually the mother of Trig, now could it? 2) Obama was conceived by a 17 year old unwed mother, do you really want to go there? 3) Wasn’t it Obama who said that more fathers need to take responsibily instead of just being a “donor”? 4) Bristol is not the name of the vp pick last time I knew 5) saying that Sarah should stay home and take care of her family will just garner more support from the women who have to do a job and take care of their family 6)Then you are saying that Michelle should just stay home and not be out campaigning (which is fine with me) 7)If you feel that way then every woman in America has just been reduced to being nothing more than a baby making machine and should give up their jobs, including all the women who are in governmental positions.

It is now clear that “liberals” and the left are more interested in scrutinizing a woman’s womb than the religious right. It is the Brave New World of Obama; change that you can believe in!

Unbelievable isn’t it? But it proves how extremist, be they left or right are complete wack jobs and insane.

Congratulations to the Palins,A Nice add to the population..Didn’t Obama say at one time,if his children got pregnant too early it would be a mistake..Happy to see the Palins don’t consider babies a mistake…

Mccain/Palin.

From what I have read about Sarah, she will make a great VP…

Millions of us have experienced the same thing
with our own daughters. We coped with it, too.

Another reason to relate with Governor Palin.

No matter how open I am with the abortion issue,
I was very happy that my barely 16-year-old decided to not go through with it. I gave her the option.

I raised that grandchild. She is 25-years-old
today, happily married and has gifted me with
two beautiful and loving great-grandaughters,
5 and 7 who make my ‘golden years’ totally happy!

Oh and ..it is no ones damn business..is it dems..isn’t that what we have all espoused all these years,..that our uterus is our own damn business…

Now lets practice what we have all preached all these years and start acting like the adults we portend to be!

It’s not our business and stop anyone from the bullshit rumours of Sarah Palins family..

Wasn’t it Obama himself and Meeeeeshell..that said their kids were offlimits..well now when any of the obama thugs bring up this owmans family..shut them the fuck up immediately!

Enough is enough.

The sewers are for rats..go into the sewer…and you are what you are.

“My family is OFF LIMITS” cried the boy king.

The hypocrisy is STUNNING.

Gregory - does it look better or worse that Obama’s birth?

Comment by Gregory | 2008-09-01 12:44:39

Who are you kidding, sure it does. Obama’s mother wasn’t a preachy conservative as far as I know.

I’m no Obama fan, but some people have lost a grip on all reality by turning this into the best things since sliced bread. It IS a fact of life, and I really don’t care. But this news can’t please the conservative camp. Regardless of her choice to keep her baby and get married.

Gregory-

Here’s a little tidbit from that “birds and bees” talk your family OBVIOUSLY neglected to have. Conservatives get pregnant, too. I hope this doesn’t come as too much of a shock. Wouldn’t want it to ruin what’s left of your day.

Comment by Gregory | 2008-09-01 14:44:13

I don’t give a flying F…Oh course conservatives get pregnant (too bad, it leads to their reproduction). Some people are REALLY STUPID (like those who answer posts with non-responses in order to create drama). No wonder the choices are between McCain & Obama. And I actually supported Hillary with these same ding-dongs. I swear, some of you are worse than Obama cheerleaders.

Comment by fooj | 2008-09-01 15:24:21

Fuck off, Gregory. You have no idea who you are toying with. Wanna get de-balled, big guy? Keep the insults coming, jackass. I’ve been looking to parade someone’s head on a stick for at least a week now.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I never heard Sarah Palin preaching anything but her ability to lead a full life, do her job and focus on government reform and fiscal responsibility.

Speaking my mind. It’s unfortunate that Bristol is so young to start being a mother, but admirable that she decided to have the child and get married to the father of the child.

I wish them health and happiness.

And, I should add, WOMEN ROCK. Let me see a man, having 4 children, recently giving birth to a 5 who is special needs, finding out one of your own daughters is pregnant while Governing the state then takes on running for Vice President of the country.

Men couldn’t even IMAGINE doing all that.
