Breaking: Sarah Palin Wallops Joe Biden in TV Ratings [Update]

I just spotted this at the Drudge Report:

37,244,000 WATCHED PALIN SPEECH … [24,029,000 WATCHED BIDEN; 38,379,000 WATCHED OBAMA]… MORE…

Okay, Obama outdrew her by a few, but the difference is insignificant and doesn’t count all those who listened to her on the radio.

HOW (!) does one express the MAGNITUDE of a vice presidential candidate — not even the presidential candidate — drawing such a huge audience?!

[UPDATE: To be sure, I checked Joe Biden’s TV ratings last week via the A.P. Obama’s vice presidential pick Biden drew an “estimated 24 million people.”

SARAH PALIN: 37,244,000 viewers
JOE BIDEN: 24,000,000 viewers

Sarah Palin drew 13,000,000 more viewers than Biden

One more thing: EVERYBODY in America is still talking non-stop about Sarah Palin’s speech. Remember last week, the morning after Obama’s big speech? Nada. Forgotten. History.

Did Obama give an acceptance speech? I missed that but I sure tuned in to hear Sarah. She’s not Hillary but women speakers are more interesting and honest. And more experienced than some guy that just runs in elections for a living.

Go Sarah!!

Comment by Geraldo | 2008-09-04 15:52:25

Every one of those speakers was clued in. Every one of them was real. I think the charisma increased consistently through the evening. Speakers were put in the right order. I never expected Sarah to top Rudy who was in exceptional form. But she did. It was like a Rolling Stones concert with half a dozen warmup bands. But actually so much more entertaining.

Comment by jangles | 2008-09-04 18:02:08

And the size of that audience was greatly enhanced by the relentless Palin smearing from the leftist blogs. Good work Kos. Did not realize you were in the tank for McCain.

When Sarah was announced as McCain’s veep, a friend told me she liked Gov. Palin because she was like a tough South Philly lady. I didn’t get the analogy, because Alaska and South Philadelphia are as far apart geographically and culturally as San Francisco and Bowling Green.

After watching her last night, about five minutes into her speech, I turned to partner and said, “This lady kicks ass.” I finally got the S. Philly comparison.

(An example of S. Philly girls in action: there was word of a flasher loose in a South Philadelphia neighborhood. One afternoon three high school girls walking home witnessed the pervert approaching a young girl, starting to unzip his pants. They were upon him immediately, they had him wrestled to the ground and were still throwing punches when the police arrived. They were still in their Catholic school uniforms.)

I think Gov. Palin would be a strong advocate for vulnerable populations, especially in light of her being mother to a Downs’ Syndrome child.

Ah catholic girls beating up a guy but not raping him. God bless America.

Ah catholic girls beating up a guy but not raping him. God bless America.

Did you miss the part where he was a pervert?
I didn’t want to have to spell it out, but the man was going to masturbate in front of the female child.

I believe that beating up the pervert was entirely appropriate, and had I, a Catholic woman, been present, I would have kicked him in the nutsack while he was down.

How would you have handled it?

Comment by Stanislowsky | 2008-09-04 16:42:29

No I did not miss the part where he was a “pervert”. But you obviously missed the part where they were. And you’re still missing it. Are you perhaps also a pervert? I think so.

Comment by Rev. Wright, can you fix my garlic nose? | 2008-09-04 17:15:57

Why do you have the word “pervert” in quotation marks?

Do you think it’s normal for an adult male to masturbate on a city street for the express purpose of intimidating a minor female?

There’s actually a law against that activity in Pennsylvania. So according to PA state law, the guy was a pervert.

You sound like you have your own definition of pereversion that is acceptable to you and Obama’s Uncle Frank.

Thanks for giving us a (very creepy) peek into your Master’s world.

OMG I love the Catholic girls’ story!

I notice a lot of posts with people who are surprised at how well they connected with her. Not everyone of course, and there will people who will never change their minds, but at least she’s given a new perspective.

I just hope she flushes out.

Comment by Stanislowsky | 2008-09-04 16:46:51

I don’t love it – those girls make me sick. How come no one suggested they pull out their Smith & Wessons and peppered him with holes? Why didn’t they just apprehend him – two might have been enough – while a third got the police? They do have police in Killadelphia, don’t they?

And where do you think the perverts come from in the first place?

Get our yer guns! Shoot shoot shoot! The enemy is everywhere?

Barf. Just when one starts to think there’s hope for your country someone blows it and shows us all you’re still the same (sexually repressed) Neanderthals you’ve always been.

One week ago, if you said the Republican convention would draw close to what Dems drew in terms of television audience, you would have been told to submit yourself for a full psychiatric workup.

Yet last night Sarah Palin pretty much equalled the Messiah. In fact, since BET and one other network (that I do not recall) covered the Dem convention live, but not the Republicans it is for all intents and purposes the same rating.

And the Republicans have the Obama loving MSM to thank for it. It was thier vicious assaults on the Palin family that created all the interest in American seeing her speak. And low and behold, she kicked ass on that stage.

Sometimes you really do reap what you sew. Karma’s a hockey mom, isn’t it.

BET… will air Barack Obama’s speech accepting the Democratic presidential nomination on Aug. 28 live, just like its competitor TV One. Neither network is airing John McCain’s acceptance speech at the Republican convention the next week.

Comment by Lester | 2008-09-04 14:50:11

I heard that the BET network and another network did not air the Republican National Convention on their station which would mean that if they did broadcast the RNC, more people would have actually watched Sarah Palin than BO.

Comment by Mr. Natural | 2008-09-04 14:51:38

The difference between those two estimates falls well within statistical limits of uncertainty.

I’d call it a dead heat.

Comment by doublestandard | 2008-09-04 14:52:17

Not only did her ratings come very close to Obama’s, Palin’s speech was only broadcast on 6 networks, while Obama was on 10. I don’t know why the discrepancy, but another sign of sexism.

Despite that, she was even with him in ratings, and she is just the VP candidate! It was a perfect opportunity for the country to get to know her and dispel stupid rumors.

And, with her broken teleprompter, she excelled magnifcently, I didn’t even noticed if you hadn’t told me! Obama had a broken teleprompter once…he stuttered and stammerd until it was fixed.

Historic, legendary, it was such a pleasure to watch this grand lady and be a part of history. She will change washignton and the country for the good.

Madame Vice President.

Comment by Ted | 2008-09-04 15:14:36

Definitely sexism. Couldn’t have to do with one being the pres candidate, the other the VP candidate. Definitely sexism. If we knew how many Biden was on, and how many McCain will be on, then maybe we can do a real analysis. But in the mean time, definitely sexism..

“That’s 55% higher than Day 3 of the DNC, when her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, and President Clinton took the stage (24 million). “

So typical. Dismiss Hillary and don’t even bother mentioning her.

Another example of misinformation from Daily Kos.

Kos says that the convention is not helping the GOP in the state of Minnesota. He sites a poll which has Obama up by 12 in MInnesota. Only problem is that the poll was taken BEFORE the convention started, therefore it is impossible to tell what effect if any the convention has had on Minnesota voters, based off of those numbers.

I am sure I was not the only one who noticed this, and yet another example of why Kos is becoming irrelevant as a political voice in the blogosphere, and has now been reduced to nothing more than a sideshow, where clearly dillusional extreme leftists can post comments in a competition to see who can be morer shocking, but the days of anybody visiting Kos in order to get a serious political take on anything are long gone, if they ever even existed to begin with.

Comment by Ted | 2008-09-04 15:24:32

Well, not true. There is plenty of pre-speech activity at a convention site, registering local voters, etc. And the locals start to get wound up about the event before ti occurs. The actual speeches have more of a national effect. And the poll included the 2nd, which was the start of the convention. But certainly the next poll will give better data. And of course the bounce from a convention always fades pretty quickly, so it is rather meaningless anyway. I’d say look at the polls in about a week and see what is what – the two conventions should have settled out of the equation by then.

My first comment on this blog but I have followed the Hillary conversation for months along with other positive information at this site. The sudden “right turn” to support Sarah Palin concerns me because it is misleading. Yes, she has been over-studied by the news media on some topics that are ludicrous. However, she has NOT been studied on many, many items that should be close to our concern. My specific gripe is that when she was originally introduced as candidate for VP, she made remarks (can be found posted many places on the web) she stated her son Track joined the military 9-11 and was being deployed 9-11. Despite concerns about this indicated by various military folks, she also made the statement about his 9-11 deployment in her big speech (reaching this formidable audience to which you refer.) As a military parent I know that this is a breach of Operational Security, places not only her son but his unit and the military at risk, and I believe it is illegal. If you don’t like the criticisms of her personal life, please, please take up the appropriate review of her judgment, politics, honesty and integrity. My friends, she is NO Hillary Clinton.

why would it be a secret that her son is leaving for boot camp? I think you’re confused. If he was already in the military going on a sensitive mission then his details would be secret but I don’t believe that applies to boot camp.

Do you have something specific to share w the class about Palin’s honesty, integrity judgement etc? I didn’t think so or you would have already shared it. I don’t know if you are a troll or simply misinformed. But the people on this blog are sharp and informed.

Comment by A Military Mother | 2008-09-04 16:02:52

Misunderstood. Palin said he enlisted on 9-11 AND was being deployed this 9-11 in her original VP speech. In acceptance speech she repeated that he was being deployed 9-ll. What applies is what is called OPSEC and it is clear and any military parent or military member knows that. To state otherwise is dishonest. Here is link to Army.com info. http://www.army.com/articles/item/3305

Evidently, the deployment ceremony is what will be on September 11 BUT Palin should still know better. McCain’s son is in the military – you NEVER hear him do this.

In case my link doesn’t work, try copy and paste and I have copied portions of it in a reply to schmog below who claims I am wrong about this.

BTW didn’t any of you understand what was wrong with what was done to Valerie Plame Wilson? Or you just don’t want to apply it to the Army? I am saddened by these kind of responses. No, I am not a troll but I sure thought we had more in common than we evidently do.

Comment by schmog | 2008-09-04 15:25:39

You are a military parent, I was in the military.

Deployment dates for regular forces (not special forces/units) are well known in most cases, and become public one way or another in advance. It is often known to the surrounding civilian population as soon as (or sooner) than some of the military people it will be affecting. You should know this if you live near any big military installation.

In fact, very publicized ceremonies for departing units have always been common place. You should already know this, Military Mother.

Her son is being deployed on september 11 – surprise, right? What is more important is the actual identification of the unit and it’s mission, any associated units, actual routes of movement (which give us information of any supporting logistics units), information on travel waypoints, actual date of arrival, as well as actual location of arrival, dispersal, and actual date of operational rediness.

Did she say any of that in her speech? No.

Trust me, the bad guys already know all of this. I am surprised you, as a Military Mother, do not.

This talk about “operational security” is a red-herring, and another way to keep the spotlight off of legitimate questions about Obama himself.

It isn’t working.

Comment by A Military Mother | 2008-09-04 16:11:10

Please refer to my link provided for OPSEC in the above reply to wodiej. Stressing again, ALL military members and families are totally familiar with this – FRGs, military support operations, care package sites, and on and on. It places soldiers at risk, period. From that Site:

OPSEC, also known as Operational Security, is the principle that we, as Army wives and Army family members, should all abide by when talking about our soldiers. If you’ve been on any military related message board on the internet, you have more than likely seen a warning to be sure to practice OPSEC. This means protecting the information you know about your soldier and his or her unit.
Generally, it means that you should not give out the following:

(1) Your soldier’s exact location overseas

(2) Any information on troop movements – this includes any movement while they are deployed and in transit to/from theater (including R&R). Do not ever give dates or times.

(3) Any information on weapons systems, how they train or numbers – for this reason, many pictures from overseas can easily violate OPSEC.

If your soldier is in a special operations unit, the OPSEC guidelines can be stricter. You may not be able to say he or she is deployed at all, much less where. His unit and/or FRG should provide the OPSEC guidelines for these situations.

Always abide by the rules set forth by his unit. Just because it is on the news does not mean that you can talk about the issue. By talking about it, you are only verifying the information.

By the way, the detail about his unit is also spread on the internet although not mentioned directly in her speech and I have no intention of repeating it here. They are still endangered by using this for political reasons. I repeat: McCain doesn’t do it. I question her judgment and integrity in doing so.

Comment by schmog | 2008-09-04 16:32:16

Do you live near a military installation? Tell me what happens in the real world when a major unit deploys.

Do you ever hear of any news of that? Does you son ever tell you where is going and when?Does he ever tell you when he is coming back? Does he ever tell where he went? Did he ever tell you what he has seen? Did he ever tell you what he has done?

Has he ever sent you any pictures from a military installation? Has he ever sent you pictures of being overseas? Has he ever sent you photos of where he was deployed? Has he ever shown you pictures of any hardware, equipment, gear?

Exactly, now get off your high horse trying telling me what OPSEC is, I’ve lived it – and if he ever told you any of the things I just listed, well, you just witnessed possible violations of it yourself. So, are you going to report him?

Palin said her son is being deployed on september 11. BIG F*CKING DEAL. Now, I guess his entire unit is in mortal danger since we all know when they are leaving. Believe me, I am pretty sure his unit can take care of themselves. Just like your son, he is defending this nation so you just type away in here and go clicking on the net so you can copy-paste regs in complete safety.

None of this changes the fact that Obama is a weak piece of sh*t.

Comment by schmog | 2008-09-04 16:46:32

Oh, one other thing Military Mother:

You said it yourself, september 11 is a deployment ceremony. If it is a ceremony, that means the unit’s public affairs office has most likely ALREADY publicized it.

So, you need to be questioning the “judgment and integrity” of the unit itself, don’t you think?

Comment by A Military Mother | 2008-09-04 18:18:04

What I said is NOT what Palin said. She said he was being deployed. I think it is poor judgement – that is all. It is not demonstrated by McCain who doesn’t do it and knows what he is doing with the military.

I am through with this. I am saddened by the lack of open-mindedness to ONE issue relating to this candidate. My son serves this country and we do our best to follow the guidelines given to us to help keep him safe. Just like John McCain, I would NEVER mention his unit, assignment, deployment date or anything else about his service on this site or anywhere on the internet.

Common sense just ain’t so common. I am sad. I will not bother to try to make sense of this further. Obviously that is not what is wanted here.

Comment by Patti | 2008-09-04 20:39:47

I knew the date my son was being deployed. And I knew when he was supposed to be coming home. In between I just wanted to hear his voice.. She did not give out any more information than I did.

Comment by dpvegas | 2008-09-04 17:00:40

You’re misreading the OPSEC that you just pasted and posted (why bother if you don’t read it?). You may not mention the specific location IN THEATER, which is a really, really old military terminology meaning the country the member is in. He might get sent to a green zone now, but I’ll let the Army handle that one.

I’ve been in and around the military since 1974. I’ve dealt with how not to give specifics when I was in the military and for other things. And, as my husband pointed out last night, the Army was probably loving the notice given…they couldn’t pay for that! Which is probably why the Barky camp is whining on about it.

Additionally, I’m sure that the Palin’s know what’s what. And if nothing else, Sen. McCain, a retired Navy officer, is probably more familiar with these military laws than you or I.

I’m not surprised at these ratings. The MSM fell into a trap of their own making and Sarah Palin delivered for The Republican Party.

As a life-long Democrat, it was painful to see prominent Republican women rally to the defense of Governor Palin (good for them!) when my own party was conspicuously absent during Senator Clinton’s ordeal.

It was and is a proud moment for the Republican Party. No amount of vitriol spewing from the far-left blogs can change that, ever.

Comment by VMorris | 2008-09-04 15:12:29

You nailed it. The DNC stood by, did nothing and just watched as Hillary was being dragged behind the media bus.

That little girl Is Hillary’s Victory!

Because Hillary hung in there and took the beating she did every night and still fought on, she created the circumstances that made last night Possible.

Thanks to Hillary, the PUMAs, No Quarter, the 18,000,000 and Obama’s stupidity in passing over Hillary Sarah emerged..

That little girl, lovingly matting down that infant’s hair is right up there with John Jr. saluting his father’s coffin.

That image IS Hillary’s victory!

It said “How dare you treat women this way”!

Hillary, Pumas, I salute you!

Your the best, you made this possible.

I watched the speech on Fox News– who missed Piper smoothing down Trig’s hair! A friend told me about it this morning and we have laughed and enjoyed the cuteness all day long via youtube!

Howard Wolfson in analysis on Fox said the moments after Palin’s speech on stage with her family “you can’t buy that”. The images were exceptional.

When Sarah Palin went to hold Trig, she took a moment to hold him real tight to her, kissed him and, simultaneously, looked up to the crowd. I would bet you every Mom watching related to that moment. It was an extremely powerful moment, because it related in a heartbeat the feeling every Mom has to protect her child against everything and love her child more than anything.

Wonderful images. I bet the whole thing was a big hit across America.

Off topic – news from Detroit, MI

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick (and former Obama super delegate) has pleaded guilty, ending a nearly eight month drama that has transfixed the region, paralyzed much of city business and halted a political career that once held such promise.

The deal calls for Kilpatrick to plead guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice by committing perjury, agreeing to serve four months in jail, pay up to $1 million in restitution, and serve five years’ probation. He also agreed not to run for office during that five-year span.

In a rushed monotone, Kilpatrick told the court: “I lied under oath in the case of Gary Brown and Harold Nelthrope versus the city of Detroit … I did so with the intent to mislead the court and jury, to impede and obstruct the disposition of justice.”

Comment by wodiej | 2008-09-04 15:17:21

I heard he also assaulted a police officer. He can run for 5 years. He should be banned for life. If he had fessed up right away and quietly settled it and walked away, then I would say maybe. But look at all the taxpayer dollars he wasted because he wasn’t a big enough person to admit he made a mistake. A person like that does not have the character to be a public servant.

Comment by wodiej | 2008-09-04 15:18:10

I meant he “can’t” run for 5 years….

Next on the list, for those who aren’t following the story in Detroit, is the ongoing FBI investigation of the Detroit City Council. Councilwoman Monica Conyers, Rep. John Conyers’ wife, is uncomfortably at the center of it.

Comment by hank48188 | 2008-09-04 18:29:06

Kwame’s father, Bernard, was the bagman for Kwame. If you asked Kwame about getting City contracts he would refer them to his father. The FEDS had Bernard’s phone tapped for about 18 months and people that paid bribes have already fessed up. The Grand Jury has started to take testimony in this corruption. What is so interesting is that Kwame will go to jail on Oct. 28, the very same day that Tony Rezko will be sentenced for his Political Corruption convictions. His sentencing was delayed, I think he is talking to the FEDS to help himself, most people do turn RAT, I doubt if Rezko will be an exception.

I read that her teleprompter broke somewhere in the middle of her speech. People who had hard copies of her speech noticed because she was off script. – - – One more reason she is better than Obama even though he’s the top of his ticket.

Joe Biden has spent his career in the civilized halls of the Senate. This woman eats mooseburgers. I can’t wait for this debate!

Comment by Judy L. NC | 2008-09-04 15:18:34

Excellent news! (I ROFLMBBO at Sarah’s “styrofoam Greek columns” line too. It’s even funnier when you think they were trying for the east-portico-of-the White House look and nobody “got it”. I guess that’s what you get from Britney Spears’ people.)

Comment by Mr. Natural | 2008-09-04 15:22:27

The numbers are great! This was Palin’s in-your-face moment with the media and a perfect intro for her. I’d like to see the video that didn’t show but I’m glad it was skipped last night.

Numbers can be misleading. Consider:

- Obama, high numbers but not impressive results. He didn’t break any new ground, but did confirm celebrity and presumptiousness. Numbers were expected.

- Biden, decent numbers, well received. I think he helped because many didn’t know him well.

- Palin, spectacular. The media and Obama’s nutroots have been trashing her all week. She bested them without breaking a sweat. I think her numbers are extremely important because of the impact and newness she brings to the campaign.

- McCain. I don’t figure on very high numbers, probably not much higher than Biden. McCain simply needs to not screw up.

So Guiliani’s excuse was bad teleprompter?

Comment by lee,sarasota | 2008-09-04 15:23:22

The Republicans, supposidly the party who does not favor women, came to the defense of Sarah Palin. Not only did the democratic leaders fail to stop Obama and his supporters from the hatred and dirty remarks about Hillary, but the leaders of her own party refused to rally round her and the females, Pelosi, Brazile, and others joined in the fray. Until the party rids itself of these types of leaders, we will not support the democrats. They have doomed the party in this election. Hillary Clinton was the best qualified and her party threw her to the wolves.

Sure, lots of people watched. I watched.

Doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

I’m sure far more people who won’t vote for John McCain watched Sarah Palin speaking than did people who won’t vote for Obama watch him.

The simple and obvious reason for this is that this is the first opportunity the vast majority of us have had to see this total stranger who might be our vice president, whereas we have all had, literally, hundreds of opportunities to see and hear Obama.

Comment by Mr. Natural | 2008-09-04 15:30:29

Nonsense. Obama addicts keep watching him for the same reason junkies fix.

It’s a soul-destroying addiction.

The numbers from McCain’s speech tonight will be very telling. I have a feeling they’ll be somewhere around Biden’s 24 million, maybe a little higher.

I’m thinking the difference between the 24 million and the 37 million watchers are the swing voters trying to get to know the more unknown candidates a little better. And these swing voters are comparing a Presidential candidate against the VP candidate. Think about that. If it turns out this way, it’s a real bad sign for Obama.

Who could those extra 13 million voters be?
