Tracy Flick, My Ass

Keith Olbermann, who paused temporarily from washing the gnarly, stinky feet of Barack Obama with his tears, described Sarah Palin’s speech as a Tracy Flick moment. Are you kidding me? Tracy Flick, for those who are not movie buffs, is a character Reese Witherspoon played in the movie, Election. Flick is a conniving, back stabbing bitch. Here’s a clip:

Gee. What a shock? These clowns first compared Hillary to Tracy. Well color me surprised. But these lefty neanderthal, misogynist bastards are wrong. Sara Palin ain’t Tracy Flick. Nope, she’s Marge Gunderson. Who? You haven’t seen Fargo? A great movie by the Coen brothers. Anyway, Marge Gunderson is the pregnant sheriff who tracks down and nabs murdering kidnappers. Oh, and she loves her husband.

Marge Gunderson is a tough, no nonsense, smart lady. Now we have the real thing–meet Sarah Palin.

From what I understand Sarah Palin is a former-mayor of a town of about 9000 people. I choose to ignore that she’s governor of a state and focus on this, and pretend not to be dismissive. Then I will act offended when the same happens to me. PS how can she handle motherhood and a job?

Sincerely,
Barack Obama

I never thought Tracy Flick was a conniving, backstabbing bitch. I thought the corrupt teacher who was bitter because his friend got fired for sleeping with his student took out his own marital frustrations and guilty sexual fantasies out on this, yes, robotic, ambitious and politically ruthless girl, propped up a candidate who just wanted to kill time since he couldn’t play football, and STOLE BALLOTS cast for her, leading to his firing and the breakup of his marriage. Tracy Flick is totally Hillary Clinton, and I say that as someone who likes the movie Election.

Another Troll — as usual another sexist pig.

The new meme from camp Obama is slam women whenever the trolls get a chance.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-04 16:13:56

Tracy Flick is an anti-hero who pokes fun at male castration panic. It was a timely movie and set the table for the most likely first woman to run for President on a major party ticket and what she would have to face. Why is it wrong to point out Hillary’s flaws or the ineffective packaging of her failed campaign? Hillary allowed herself to be defined by her opponent, and it was easy. She stood by her husband. I don’t condemn her for that, but it made it hard for her to appeal to a lot of women as someone who stands up to the male-dominated power structure. Hillary made it clear she would never bake cookies. She said she wanted her own political career playing a major role in her husband’s administration. Many women admired her for that. But those scandals of his, fairly or not, stuck to her. She ran for office in a pantsuit, as a fighter, drinking and cussing with the boys, because that’s who she is. She has been in Washington for a long time and relates more to the big cities.

EVERY POLITICIAN WHO RUNS FOR OFFICE CARICATURES THEMSELVES.

Hillary Clinton was Tracy Flick. That’s only a bad thing to insecure men.

Comment by elise | 2008-09-04 21:57:51

Through which prism are you viewing Hillary’s campaign, Hope? Though that of a teen flick as KO did? Bill Clinton’s sexual indiscretion had nothing to do with his ability as president to do his job and nothing to do with this election. Where have you been for fifteen months, that you have not seen what corporate media and corrupted politics can do to the most qualified candidate this country has ever had? Haven’t you seen the sexism from women and men alike while the world watched the lack of respect this county has for women?

Why is it wrong to point out Hillary’s flaws or the ineffective packaging of her failed campaign?

Why was it wrong to point out the flaws of her opponent which are deeper and wider? There was nothing wrong with the “packaging” if you believe a president should be chosen on the basis of ability, knowledge and experience or that a political party has a responsibility to chose that person and not use the process to grab power.

That power grab may destroy the DNC, but Hillary will still be and so will Bill Clinton. Do you think Obama ran a good campaign? He doesn’t “get it”. The only thing that’s counts is the GE and he has brushed millions of voters away like dirt. Really smart politics.

Comment by amos | 2008-09-05 00:38:55

Elise,

Your characterization of Bill’s problems are actually indicative of someone who absorbed the story of the corporate media you’re attacking.

(As an aside, no State-owned media comes even close to ours for impartiality; you may agree with everything the BBC, Pravda or the CBC says, but to imagine that they are even-handed or fully disclose their findings is delusional.)

To put it bluntly: there was no Monica Lewinsky trial. Look it up. The sexual indiscretions that you are referring to wasn’t the issue. Monica Lewinsky was a character witness in the Paula Jones trial. That trial was not for sexual indiscretion, but for sexual harassment.

That’s a crime in itself. The case was eventually dismissed on the grounds that Jones couldn’t prove harm, but not before Clinton settled for $850k, had to pay her $91k for costs incurred because he lied about her, opened up the Lewinsky issue and lied to the court enough (about more than Lewinsky) that he was disbarred.

The Democratic talking point - the one proffered by CNN and the MSM - is that it was all about Lewinsky and sexual indiscretion. Now you know the truth. The question is: will it change your view?

Tracy Flick was a singleminded, win-at-all-costs bitch. I’ve heard Hillary compared to her more than once, but only by people who think Hillary is a singleminded, win-at-all-costs bitch. Like the Doberman.

I suggest you look at “Election” again. And this time, use your brain.

Would you describe it as shrill?

When Sarah Palin speaks, do you just hear her “annoying” voice telling you to take out the trash?

Then she speaks for me, too. The heave ho, you bum.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-09-04 16:35:36

Let me ask you something. Obama’s halting conversational style is constantly criticized here. But no one alleges that someone who does that is being sexist in the opposite direction. Why the double standard?

Comment by ces | 2008-09-04 16:44:38

Someone who has an accent can still put together a coherent sentence and be understood.

Someone who has a “halting” style can’t even form a coherent sentence in his head…unless it’s on a teleprompter.

Accent != Lack of Coherence. Big difference.

Oh, and if you wanna bring up accents, let’s hear Barry call out evening prayers…how’s that accent now?

Also, Hope Floats, your previous remarks analyzing the “Election” movie were spot-on IMHO. Keith Olbermann is too dumb to realize that the Tracy Flick character was mostly a very admirable young woman who didn’t take crap from anybody.

Thanks for the insights.

Actually, it’s a dialect not an accent. And you guys in the lower 48 sound pretty damned annoying sometimes as well. Especially when you try to sound like you’re some hip street dude from Chicago, when you’re really some rich ass prep school punk from Hawaii.

Comment by Duras | 2008-09-04 16:05:41

Comment by schmog | 2008-09-04 16:10:56

I agree with you Skiron, Obama’s voice is annoying and condescending. It sounds like a foghorn?

From wikipedia:

All foghorns use a vibrating column of air to create an audible tone, but the method of setting up this vibration differs. Many older foghorns, especially those on land, used diaphones to create the audible sound, producing a distinctive, deep and penetrating tone followed by an all-too-audible ‘grunt’, resulting in the famous two-tone sound that most people associate with foghorns and the sea.

That’s exactly how Obama sounds! You hit the nail on the head Skiron!

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-09-04 18:05:53

And when he speaks before a Southern audience, he starts sounding like a foghorn of a different variety–the leghorn variety, that is, son.
Get it? Foghorn? Leghorn? I made a joke, son. Why aren’t you laughing?

Comment by 935 Lies | 2008-09-04 21:05:10

Try not to laugh, but it took me 4 years to kick my Dixie Drawl and manage to sound like a funtioning human being instead of a central Florida service station attendant.

Still, fifty years later, insufficient sleep or excessive Scotch and the odd, “y’all,” escapes me, marking me, forever to the cultural elites who communicate in “Licust Valley Lockjaw,” and, “Yankee Honk,” as an ignorant rustic.

I find this trend on their part to be advantageous to me when I am negotiating business affairs and playing poker with them…

Try Champaign-Urbana, IL. It’s a leafy, Victorian brick street kinda place–also home to UIUC, the main campus of the University of Illinois, and therefore is and always has been relatively cosmopolitan for its size.

It’s also within easy driving distance of Chicago (120 miles) when you need a taste of the big dirty city.

Could you imagine Obama vs. Palin if Obama’s teleprompter went blank?

Well, uh…um…you see…uh uh….um…ya know, it’s…uh…. um….. uh….

Then again, all he has to do is memorize the handy dandy Obama speech forumla:

1. Noun, Verb, George Bush is bad. (applause)

2. Noun, Verb, Hope. (cue white girl fainting)

3. Noun, Verb, Change. (cue crying old black lady)

Repeat 1 - 3.

Worked during the primary!

Comment by Sarah Palin | 2008-09-04 16:38:52

Since I was named? Was that when I said that I wasn’t sure what the VP did?

Maybe it was when I said this :
“I say this with all due respect to Hillary Clinton…but when I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism or you know maybe a sharper microscope put on her, I think you know that doesn’t do us any good – women in politics, women in general wanting to progress this country.”

(How is that?)

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-04 20:03:42

It sure doesn’t do the women of this country any good when you complain about sexism then shut up and do what you’re told. I tune in to MSNBC to listen to Keith’s view of Gov. Palin’s speech and heard what you heard. The assessment was simple that Keith is man who hates women , I can understand the animosity between Bill O Reilly and Bill, lets face it Bill is a pain in the butt sometimes, but it seems that he is not afraid of strong women . I believe Obama is nervous that Palin is in the race because he is doing O Reilly tonight. The DNC screwed up big time and now they will have to eat that mistake. The republicans have found that it is advantage to fight from there strenghts which makes Democrats appear weak.

Comment by Chicago Joe | 2008-09-04 16:48:01

I used to worship at the feet of Keith Olbermann. Someone was giving voice to my absolute disdain for the corrupt, incompetent Shrub (GWB)while being snarky and clever, and offering inspired turns of phrase. But when he turned on Hillary, and turned big time, I turned my back on him. Occasionally I drop in and find that he is still creating suppositions to favor BHO with those obscure allusions he is so fond of that make him the smartest guy in the room (in his opinion, any way). I hated O’Reilly, but when I saw that BO’R was treating Hillary better than the left-leaning KO, I took another look at him. He continues to bloviate, but he isn’t in the tank for anybody, which is a lot more than I can say for KO and his comrades on MSNBC.

Comment by bert | 2008-09-04 17:44:05

but he (Bill-O) isn’t in the tank for anybody,

Yes, he is Chicago Joe. He is pure Republican/conservative through and through. He is just much better at being a bloviator than Overhimself is.

I have watched O’Reilly for years and he is very good at what he does. He appears (acts) like he is even handed, and his fans believe he is, but he builds an interview. He layers it. Sometimes he layers in just one interview. And often he layers throygh several and over several days. He builds his case. And right now he is building his case with Obama. Has been for several weeks.

He also has a keen understanding of psychology and he can skewer someone very quickly once he finds their Achilles heel. And I think he knows Obama’s. Tonight should be very interesting. He lets his guest have their say then skewers them with their own words. Few can get past his skills. Hillary did and you could see his appreciation for her her skills. He did not think she had it.

Even his anger and shouting matches is acting to a large extent extent. And his fans eat it up. Overhimself tries to emulate him. But he is not very good at it.

Hillary was compared to Tracy Flick too. All women, it seems, look the same to these people.

Unless they’re strong, black women like Michelle Obama, in which case they’re compared to King Kong, Aunt Esther, Gorillas and men in drag. Keep rockin’, PUMA, vote for the Jiffy Peanut Butter commercial lady to your hearts content.

(Obnoxious Sally Fields voice):
“Choosy creationist, anti-choice, soccer mothers choose John McCain!”

Play the Race Card all you want, have MO scratch your eyes out, put America down as you are not proud of it, hem an haw about voting for your oppent if they should win….

TwoTermObama; Have you read MO’s thesis ?

Come back when you have and then tell NQ why she is percieved that way you described it.

And by the way take that Jiffy Lube and ram it up your snout. Sally Fields is a talented person. I personally think you might try looking in the mirror and ask your self what it takes to be a man. You and Obama don’t have a clue.

People are jealous that Palin actually succeeded. But cooler heads are saying things like this:

ST. PAUL — For John McCain — prisoner of war, congressman, senator and now the GOP presidential nominee — his entire life has been building to his address tonight before the Republican National Convention.

The lead-in to his address could hardly have been more ideal. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain’s choice for vice president, surpassed all expectations last night with a speech that established her as both a rising star on the national scene and, at least for now, a major asset for the Republican ticket

From Chris Cilliza, one of the few straight shooters on the Washington Post political writing staff.

It’s all tied up again — Last week’s CBS poll had Obama up by 8. It’s now even. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/04/opinion/polls/main4416798.shtml Polling was done Mon.-Wed. It is unclear if any was done before Palin’s speech, but at most they got a few hours of polling in.

Keith “get a shovel” Olbermann’s Tracy Flick jab is without question gender-baiting, not unlike Harry Reid’s “shrill” characterization of Sarah Palin.

Here’s the context:
1. Olbermann is comparing Palin to a fictional character who can truly be characterized as a “nasty little b*tch”. Never mind that it is precisely the job of the VP to be the attack dog. Male VP candidates are generally NOT criticized for being attack dogs, indeed they are often criticized for not attacking enough. Translation: Double standard w.r.t. gender, i.e. gender-baiting.

Further, Olbershit must then condemn Hillary for trashing McCain, e.g. “No way, no how, no McCain!” and so on, and Ann Richards for saying Bush41 was “born with a silver foot in his mouth”. After Hillary played the dutiful Democrat supporting Obama in her convention speech recently, Olbermann actually said “I’m proud of her!”

2. Obama himself has played so dirty with all manner of race-baiting zingers, gender-baiting zingers, and character assassinating zingers. There’s clearly no consistency on the part of Keith “get a shovel” Olbermann when it comes to Obama’s blatant likewise transgressions. Indeed, Obama’s transgressions, particularly those against Hillary were far worse since they were mostly viciously lies.

When there is no consistency, the context is corrupt. When the context is corrupt, the subtext kicks in. In this case, the subtext is gender.

The subtext of gender is always present for Palin since Palin is a woman in a group which has pretty much been exclusively men, with the only exception of Geraldine Ferraro. Of course, the “group” here is that of credible VP candidates. (Same goes for Hillary, but the group in Hillary’s case is the group of credible Dem/GOP candidates for nominee for President, which was exclusively men before Hillary. Similarly, the subtext for Obama is race, since he is the first minority/African American nominee of a major party.) Subtext is always present for Palin since there is always a difference in her case, i.e. in a crowd of men, she naturally stands out. Similarly for Obama; the subtext of race is always present because next to all the white candidates, he naturally stands out.

But remember, subtext kicks in only if the context is corrupt. Context can be corrupted in any of the following ways:
i. Lies: There is simply no context for lies and other forms of scurrilous accusations.
ii. Double standards: Whites treated deferentially from blacks and vice versa. Men treated deferentially from women and vice versa. And so on.
iii. Cherrypicking: Disproportionally emphasizing one set of facts over another. An object, statement, etc., can only be understood in (or uttered) in its proper context, i.e. full set of relevant facts surrounding the object or statement in question. When you take things out of context, they lose their meaning. Cherrypicking facts does precisely this. Politicians, particularly Obama, do this when they flip-flop.

—————
Each and every time Obama scurrilously race-baited Hillary, such as sending out his assassins to say Hilalry “denigrated Dr. King!”, it also invariably resulted in gender baiting of Hillary. Why? Beacause any and all lies corrupt the context, thereby letting subtext kick in.

Here’s an intuitive way of looking at this: Ask any person who actually believes Hillary is truly guilty of denigrating Dr. King to summarize the situation in one sentence and they will invariably say: “That white woman is playing the race card against a black man.” The words which obviously stick out are: “white”, “black” and “woman”. “White” and “black” means the subtext of race has kicked in, whereas the word “woman” similarly means that the gender subtext has also kicked in. (Note: They’re not gonna say in gender neutral terms, i.e. “That white senator is playing the race card…”)

That is what makes Hillary Clinton such a racist is that she is not only white, but also that she is a woman, for in the past, the race card has never come up so vilely within the Democratic party’s primaries. But in the past, all the candidates were men, ergo Hillary is a racist bitch!

Comment by Beowulf | 2008-09-04 18:12:23

It should be added that Palin’s attacks on Obama were mostly accurate, such as on his condescending “bitter” comment (which btw was also racist for it’s “antipathy towards those that aren’t like them… antipathy towards immigrants…” portion) or his numerous acts of brazen resume padding.

It’s okay to cherrypick a little in partisan attacks, just as it is okay for Bill and Hillary to cherrypick facts in favor of Obama during their respective Dem. Convention speeches. As long as the attacks/compliments, cherrypicking and whatnot, are not way out of bounds, then it’s all good.

I love watching MSDNC it is the best raw uncut humor…this afternoon for example..

Fineman went on a 5 minute rant against the Repubs that was must see TV…google it. Then ,as he is calming down (sort of) he admits that the lack of access that he was just bitching about, has been a problem with the Obama camp since the start of the campaign…

so let’s review Obama has offered almost no access to the candidate and you bitching because McCain decided to follow suit 60 days BEFORE the election…what a wimp. McCain what took you so long??

Then there is the Noonan fiasco…Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy were on live mics but had cut away to commercial…Someone @ MSNODICK taped the conversation, altered the content and posted it on the internet…it is featured on Huffblow…

Noonan is livid, says the tape was altered and released by MSNBC crew….

LOVE IT!!

It is so crazy that the boss has all the anchors separated for the Repub party, with now Keith in NYC and Spits Matthews in a park blocks away from the convention interviewing protesters, and Shuster the “roaming” and Andrea Bitchell in the convention floor.. just so they don’t beat the crap out of each other..

I think BRAVO should make a reality show about it.

It is so much fun…better than TRACY FLICK.

That movie is a cult classic.

At any rate, Chris Matthews not knowing he was just ont he air was in a yelling match with someone on his panel in the language of, “Hell, it’s always an all out war with you.”

If I had to wager I’d say 10:1 he was calling Ohlbermann on something.

I don’t know that I’m willing to agree about Obama and his supposed misogyny. However, if it is the case (I just hear more accusation than evidence), it would be utterly indicative of a man who was raised without a father, as is much of Obama’s identity.

Boys without fathers, as the Progressive poet Robert Bly noted, do not have much respect for women. At the same time, they seek to be dominated by them - having that role as a parent throughout their lives.

Obama is, frankly, effete. Not just in his physical appearance or in the way he holds his shoulders, his hips and his hands (don’t blame me, read Walt Whitman’s description in “I Sing the Body Electric”), but in the fact that all his pursuits are and were finesse. Look, Teddy Roosevelt was born with a weak body. He trained it, yes, but he also trained his mind at the same time. Whizzer White is another example. Obama can sink a 3-pointer with no one around to pressure him. That’s finesse.

It’s not surprising that Palin’s sharpest barb of the night was the one about the Presidency not being a personal journey. That’s exactly what one who does not know himself would see it as. It cuts so far down to the bone on Obama, you can see his heart beating. It’s exactly why he has so much venom for her, and why he’s allowing himself to be drawn into a conflict with the bottom of the Republican ticket.

Obama’s entire life has been about a guy trying however he can to find the man in himself his father never put there. Part of choosing a black identity, instead of having the courage to say, “I will have no racial identity” is part of that. Go to iTunesU and look for a Stanford interview with Shelby Steele.

amos,

Only a GOP troll believes that the Lewinsky mess was about something other than sex, specifically Clinton’s sexual relations with Monica. Did you read the Starr report? If it had been any more prurient Larry Flynt would have been ashamed to publish it. It was all sex, sex, sex, for you small-minded trolls. And yeah, sexual harassment is a crime, but there is zero evidence that Bill committed this. He never lied about the totally non-credible Paula Jones whose entire claim rested on the “fact” that he once forgot to buy her flowers on Secretary’s Day. Yeah, maybe in strict legal terms it wasn’t “about sex” but in the dirty, twisted little minds that make up the GOP that is precisely what it was.

Also agree with what Hope Float said about Tracy Flick. “Election” is not a “teen movie,” by the way. Far from it. And yes, it’s the corrupt teacher who is the craven, cheating, Barackesque character. He undermines Tracy’s campaign because he believes that she’s TEH EEEEVIL and that his chosen candidate is all sweetness and purity. Sound familiar?

[...] Tracy Flick, My Ass (by Larry Johnson at No Quarter) Keith Olbermann, who paused temporarily from washing the gnarly, stinky feet of Barack Obama with his tears, described Sarah Palin’s speech as a Tracy Flick moment. Are you kidding me? Tracy Flick, for those who are not movie buffs, is a character Reese Witherspoon played in the movie, Election. Flick is a conniving, back stabbing bitch… But these lefty neanderthal, misogynist bastards are wrong. As I’ve said before, I disagree with Sarah Palin on every issue.  But Democrats who refuse to recognize her appeal will not be able to deal with it.  And that’s a recipe for loss.  Again. [...]
