What Do You Know – Governing Alaska Does…

Involve foreign policy. Not that Obama seems to know this, though. He claimed in an interview with George Stephanopoulos that being the governor of Alaska, with Russia as a next door neighbor, does NOT qualify as foreign relations experience.

Now, apparently going to Pakistan on a school break during college counts, or living in Indonesia for 4 years while a child counts, but not living next door to a major world power.

Alert No Quarter reader, BMC, presented information yesterday about the Alaska National Guard, and the responsibilities of the Governor of Alaska. I’ll bottom line it for you – since Alaska IS next to Russia (Obama does know that much – he said he saw it on a map – I kid you not, that’s what he said), the Alaska National Guard’s 49th Missile Defense Battalion is on duty ALL THE TIME:

Eleven ground-based interceptor missiles buried in underground silos here represent a key part of a multi-layered defense system designed to protect the United States from a ballistic missile attack. These interceptors, and two more at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., would destroy incoming missiles at the “midcourse phase,” outside the earth’s atmosphere.

In the event of an attack, members of the Alaska Army National Guard’s 49th Missile Defense Battalion based here would use sophisticated surveillance and radar systems to track the missile through its initial boost phase, explained Maj. Joe Miley, the unit’s operations officer. If the missile reached the mid course phase, the Alaska Guardsmen would await the order to engage it.

On order, they would fire an interceptor at the incoming missile. The force of the collision –the equivalent of two refrigerators slamming into each other at 15,000 mph — would destroy the target before it reentered the atmosphere, Miley said.

Miley noted that the National Guard is perfectly suited to perform such an important mission.

Wowie zowie. So, there is a battalion on full alert all the time, keeping its eye on Russia. But Governor Palin has no foreign policy experience. Yeah, okay, Obama. Just because YOU don’t doesn’t mean others don’t, either. Just sayin’.

Well, how about Homeland Security, then? Major Joe Miley says this:

“The National Guard has traditionally done homeland defense,” he said, citing National Guard history dating back 370 years to the Minutemen in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. “And this is the epitome of homeland defense.”

Here at what Miley called the “strategic sweet spot” for missile defense, almost 200 Alaska Guardsmen who came from around the country to serve in the 49th Missile Defense Battalion take that calling pretty seriously.

The unit is a cross-section of America, at one time representing 46 states and territories, and all its members applied for three-year, Active Guard and Reserve assignments with the program, Miley explained.

Getting accepted into the program is tough, but passing the extensive training required is even tougher, Miley said. Applicants go through nine to 14 weeks of air defense training at Fort Bliss, Texas; a nine-week Ground Missile Defense operator course in Colorado Springs, Colo., then four more weeks of unit training in Colorado Springs before taking a certification test.

“We hire the best and put them through a rigorous training program,” Miley said. To pass the GMD operator course, for example, students have to score 90 percent or better.

“You have to be an A student or you can’t do GMD,” Miley said. “The way we conduct our training, you basically have to get everything right to progress to the next level, so there’s no room for error. We have very high standards.”

That’s a good thing, he said, in light of the responsibility they shoulder every day. Whether they’re providing security at the 800-acre missile defense complex here or manning fire direction center in what Miley called “the tank turret of missile defense,” they’re on the front lines of homeland defense.

There is more to this interesting article, and if you can, take a look at it. For anyone to claim that Governor Palin, as Commander in Chief of the Alaska National Guard is merely serving as a figurehead is just plain inaccurate. I can sure see why Obama, who has not been an executive of ANYTHING would try to frame it that way, but – SURPRISE – he’s incorrect. (By the way, there is an email going around that speaks even more to Palin’s day-to-day oversight regarding the Alaska National Guard, but I have not been able to obtain independent verification of it beyond blogs, so I am not including it here.)

And can I just add, for Obama to claim PALIN is just “making stuff up” (funny – he said the exact same thing about Dobson) is laughable. Here is a man who hasn’t met a fact he couldn’t twist, or deny, or exacerbate. His books are proof enough of that, but if you need more, there are plenty out there. Here’s a fun game. How many half-truths, truth manipulations, and flat out lies have come from Obama? I’ll start you off with just two – there are so many, I don’t want to monopolize them. The first is one of my favorites mainly because of the letter Senator McCain wrote to him regarding it. I’ve written about this before several times, and so has Larry Johnson. It’s the one about Obama and Campaign Finance Reform. He brought it up again at Saddleback, all his work on it, and “quotes” from conversations he had. If only he had actually DONE any work on that committee, but he did not. McCain slammed him in his letter to him (which you can read HERE). Then there was his claim while in Israel that he was on the Banking Committee. He is not, never has been. You can watch the video HERE. And he has the “AUDACITY” to talk about anyone else’s claims? What a joke. (I might add, from all reports, Palin is pretty much “what you see is what you get.” Her open government and life, about which we know FAR more than Obama’s in just a week, is far more transparent than Obama has ever been. He still refuses to release ANY pertinent information about himself or his records.) So, go to it – what are YOUR favorite Obama-manufactured statements?

If it weren’t over before, IT IS NOW!
Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin’s new “change” mantra.

“You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered. “It’s still a pig.”

“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”

“We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”

The crowd apparently took the “lipstick” line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: “lipstick.”

Yikes, I sure hope they don’t somehow win, because their lack of judgement and their lack of understanding the mood of the American people is just unbelievably bad. Lipstick On A Pig” Update [Byron York]

The McCain campaign is holding a conference call with former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift, who is calling on Barack Obama to apologize to Sarah Palin for his “lipstick on a pig” comment. “We need to continually combat this stream of insults,” Swift said, referring specifically to “what I can only deem to be disgraceful comments comparing our vice presidential nominee, Gov. Palin, to a pig.”

Reporters were a bit skeptical that Obama intended to do that; from the sketchy reports we have, he seemed to be talking about how John McCain can claim to represent change but isn’t really an agent of change. But Swift said, “it’s pretty clear the crowd thought that that was the insult he was leveling.” And Swift made the (hopefully) undeniable observation that Palin is the only one of the four national candidates who wears lipstick.

I call for 0bama to step down before he humiliates the entire black community.

I call for Democratic leaders to step in now, before this election goes any further, and declare Hillary the nominee and let her take it from here.

For a man who wants to be POTUS to call the nominee of the other Party a Pig is reprehensible and certainly not presidential. And to make references to fish is one the most contemptible remarks a man could make when alluding to a woman.

Barack 0bama hates women. He really hates women. He is running against John McCain and he is stooping to attacks against the man’s VP candidate. WTF!

But what’s worse, he’s trying to incite her base into responding to him with racially charged language so that he can start a racial conflict during the campaign. I said this before, he is a student of Harold Washington’s school of thought: winning elections through racial politics. 0bama has updated it by adding gender politics.

For the love of might: Democratic leaders step in before you let this man destroy the Party completely.

This is a travesty!!!!

Steve1,
According to this Time/CNN article, Sen Obama’s mother worked in Pakistan in the early 1980’s…
Perhaps he went there to visit her ?

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1729524-2,00.html

“Every so often, Ann would leave Indonesia to live in Hawaii—or New York or even, in the mid-1980s, Pakistan, for a microfinance job”

Sen Obama’s mother was really quite well-educated. She earned her Ph.D just before her death.

She is credited (acc to this article) with building Indonesia’s microfinance program (heavy duty banking, macro-economics, finance)

Sen Obama grew up with his mother, lived with her parents and only devotes a few lines of text here and there about his mother and her parents? Why is he avoiding any discussion about his mother? Is he trying to deflect attention away from her? If so, why?

Comment by sowsear | 2008-09-09 19:29:21

When his mother was dying pf cancer he didn’t go to her bedside. When asked about that, he reportedly said, I didn’t know she was that ill.
Funny thing, too, when he went to Hawaii last and visited his grandma, he took only his advisors and agents with him. Very warm, sentimental man.

Comment by educatedwhitewoman | 2008-09-09 19:55:25

He was in Pakistan visiting a college friend from Occidental who is Pakistani. Back then, I’m not sure could not get into Pakistan with a U.S. passport. Also, it was a time of great turmoil in Pakistan and Afghanistan, during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Pakistan was full of Taliban and jihadis. Lovely spot for a 3-week vacation. One he rarely if ever mentions. Why?

Remember Soetoro-Obama didn’t even know that Kentucky was a neighbor to Illinois.

Comment by csuzeq | 2008-09-09 18:56:19

I truly think the POTUS candidates must take an IQ test, as well as the US citizenship test. Now I do understand the citizenship test is hard and most Americans probably wouldn’t be able to pass it without studying so the candidates can study for it. That would be fine. It would just be nice to know that they know about our citizenship. McCain could probably pass it by taking it spur of the moment. Obama would fail, even given a handicap since he is not a US citizen for real! LOL!

Palin Investigation Tainted
by Amanda Carpenter

John McCain’s presidential campaign is calling an ethics investigation led against his vice president, Sarah Palin, by Alaskan Democrats who are actively supporting his rival Barack Obama into question.

To boost their argument members of the McCain campaign are citing a page on Obama’s presidential website that identifies state legislators investigating Palin’s decision to fire the state’s Public Safety Commissioner as Obama supporters.

The McCain camp is zeroing on political action taken by Alaskan Democrats Hollis French and Kim Elton against Republican Governor Palin. Both have endorsed Obama for president and are currently supporting his candidacy.

Last week, Alaskan Republicans asked Alaska’s Legislature’s Legislative Council, which appointed Hollis to lead the investigation, to replace Hollis with someone less partisan. Their request was denied by Elton, who sits at the head of the Legislative Council.

In interviews, Hollis had hinted his investigation may culminate in an “October surprise,” perhaps Palin’s impeachment as Governor, that could help the Democrats win the White House in November.

ABC News quoted Hollis saying “If they had done their job they never would have picked her,” referring to the McCain campaign’s vetting process. “Now they may have to deal with an October surprise.”

Hollis plans to release his final report, which he describes as “damaging,” on October 31, four days short of the presidential election.

The investigation is intended to determine whether Palin abused her office when she pressured Safety Commissioner Wooten to fire her former brother-in-law State Trooper Mike Wooten. Police investigations against Wooten found he had used a Taser on his stepson, illegally shot a moose, drank beer in his patrol car and threatened his father in law with death.

Wooten finalized a bitter divorce with Palin’s sister, Molly, in 2005.

4 TH FROM THE LEFT IS Hollis French

Alaska state senator Hollis French, who is running an investigation of Gov. Sarah Palin, says the McCain campaign is using stall tactics to prevent him from releasing his final report by Oct. 31st.

ALASKA ELECTED OFFICIALS RALLY BEHIND OBAMA’S ENERGY PLAN

Obama supports Alaska gas pipeline

JUNEAU, AK – Today in Juneau, state representatives and senators from across Alaska gathered to rally behind Barack Obama and discuss his plan to address record-high energy prices that are straining Alaskans budgets and hurting the Alaska economy.

“Senator Obama has a plan to end our dependence on foreign oil and reduce skyrocketing energy prices,” said Senator Hollis French of Anchorage, a former oil rig worker. “Having worked in the oil business in Alaska for twelve years, I know firsthand the importance of oil and natural gas to Alaska. Senator Obama will not only invest in renewable fuels and increase car fuel efficiency standards, he strongly supports construction of an Alaska natural gas pipeline and accelerated drilling in the Alaska National Petroleum Reserve which will provide affordable energy to Alaska and our country and good jobs for Alaskans.”

“Rural Alaskans have been especially hard-hit by skyrocketing energy prices and the faltering economy,” said Representative Mary Nelson of Bethel. “Barack Obama understands the energy challenges they face, and he will work as president to lower energy costs and get our economy back on track. Senator Obama will be a fighter for rural Alaska.”

“High gas and energy prices are squeezing Alaskans harder than anyone else in the US,” Senator Kim Elton of Juneau said. “We need a president who will work to make Alaska resources part of our country’s energy solution. Barack Obama has long been a supporter of Alaska energy priorities like the Alaska natural gas pipeline. He’ll work as president to invest in Alaska’s energy future and make Alaska part of the answer.”

Barack Obama’s energy plan will provide meaningful relief for Alaska families, make a historic investment in renewable energy development, and help secure our energy independence. Obama’s plan will:

Make a real investment – $150 billion – in alternative energy technology; further development of plug-in hybrid cars; and commercialization of wind, solar and other renewable fuels.
Eliminate the “Enron Loophole” that encourages speculation on energy markets that has driven up the cost of oil.
Raise fuel efficiency standards and provide financial assistance to American automakers to help them make the transition – a change that will reduce oil consumption by a trillion gallons of gas over the next eighteen years.
Senator Obama has supported the Alaska natural gas pipeline as a member of the Senate and will strongly support the project as President.
More information on Sen. Obama’s plans to reduce our dependence on foreign oil is available here.

You know the Democratic Governor of AZ is supporting Obama even while McCain is her Senator. I would venture to say a majority of every state party would be supporting that party’s nominee. So what?

And isn’t that Alaska Pipeline idea Palins, that he so convienently added to his campaign (I think he did that numerous times, even in Oregon where he took Hillary’s energy policy and plagerized it word for word.

As far as Palin’s involvement about firing someone, that is so damn week. But I can see where Obama people would go after her for that. I mean this guy was only threatening his wife, isn’t that the example that Obama has been showing all this time. It is ok to abuse women? It must be, all those feminists are still behind him.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-09 18:20:29

If I knew politicians in my state were working to spread lies about me and get me fired, I would fire them first. ASAP. Second, the McCain campaign thoroughly vetted Palin. There is no October surprise. Obama is trying to run an Eagleton rumor on Palin while she prepares for the VP debate and sees her son Track ship out for Iraq. This is just lies desperately put out to bring Obama’s poll numbers back from the dead. After the ABC interview, this will be history.

I doubt that anything they release about Palin will match the October surprise sensationalism erupting if the GOP releases documents that verify the accusations in the Berg v Obama lawsuit currently in Federal Court such as Indonesian court papers granting citizenship to Obama and his adoption by Lolo Soetoro and copies of his Indonesian passport used to travel to Pakistan. If they also have a copy of a Kenyan birth certificate showing the signature of the doctor or midwife who delivered him and the Kenyan hospital where he was born, then any news from Alaska will be buried in the back pages of newspapers while questions about Obama’s eligibility to be POTUS will dominate the airwaves and the blogosphere as he selfdestructs.

I can’t vote for obama. I want social security overhauled, no health care reform, war with Iran, war with Russia, Roe overturned, abortion banned in all 50 states, the trillion-dollar taxpayers’ bailout of the speculators holding Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac paper (Paulson’s plan), massive increases in defense spending and drastic cuts in all social programs, especially those geared to the poor and middle class.

MaCain/Palin!!!!!

Beat it, John-

You’re a troll. Yawn. I can’t vote for Obama because he cheated in the race in Chicago, gamed the cacuses during the primaries and didn’t allow a real roll call vote at the covention. He flip flops on issues, is the friend to radicals and I don’t trust a word out of his sexist, Machivellian mouth.

I am struggling to reply to idiot posts on another forum about this very subject. I really don’t see why this is such a big deal, given that she is so much more experienced than Bambi in everything that actually counts, but in the case of this Alaskan National Guard missile defense battalion, who actually gives them orders? Is it the Governor of Alaska or the president? Even if it is the president, wouldn’t the governor still know what was going on?

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-09 18:22:35

It’s worth it to respond, because every time Obama compares himself to Palin he loses. Every. Single. Time.

Comment by athy | 2008-09-09 19:30:10

Hope Floats-
I agree.
We must respond to each and every attack-remember what happened to Kerry and Dukakis.
And…we must respond immediately and with facts and links. We need to make sure that our responses are posted everywhere including on the site(s) where the original lie was promoted,

And lastly, we must bring light to the attack and our response to it so that voters can judge for themselves how much integrity the Obama campaign team that puts out these lies has.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2008-09-09 22:39:37

Sandi78, as I understand it, the governor of each state is in control of the National Guard in their state, thus being the Commander in Chief. ANd if there were incoming missiles, I imagine the governor would act first to intercept, while getting in touch with the Pres. to see what next. Given the proximity to Russia, I would think the Gov. of Alaska has an additional burden other governors don’t have. If someone knows more, please share!

City slickers invade Wasilla

It’s no surprise, then, that Democrats have airdropped a mini-army of 30 lawyers, investigators and opposition researchers into Anchorage, the state capital Juneau and Mrs. Palin’s hometown of Wasilla to dig into her record and background. My sources report the first wave arrived in Anchorage less than 24 hours after John McCain selected her on August 29.

You know the other team will move the ball and make some plays, but you can still control the game.

Comment by ritamary | 2008-09-09 17:58:25

Yes it is very odd the presidential candidate going after the opposition’s vp candidate. Isn’t this unprecedented? Seems like McCain should be their logical target.

After all, McCain is the one running for president, not Sarah Palin. All their vile attacks on Sarah Palin’s family have drawn sympathy toward her. Why do they feel so threatened?

Comment by csuzeq | 2008-09-09 19:18:23

Well, if you listen to any dems in panic mode, you’d think McCain died 3 weeks ago. Apparently they are all psychic and foresee that McCain won’t make it to see a week after inauguration day and quite frankly I am sick of it and have started replying with, “Obama will be just as dead with…use your imagination because then I get accused of stuff, but I’m just saying, of the 2, the one I see as most likely to not live through a term is Obama.

The bots may see troopergate as their last line of defense. But releasing a report three days before the election is stupid. Voters are very suspicious of anything that closely timed. I remember when there were some sexual harassment allegations against Swartzenegger right before his election. Even if there was truth in them, no-one bought it and it backfired.

Comment by OBSP | 2008-09-09 17:55:16

If someone abused my nephew and threaten my father, I would not need the power of the gov’s office to kick their “A.” It would be helpful and I for one who works with abused women will rally in support of her.

Comment by ritamary | 2008-09-09 18:07:38

I bought the sexual harassment accusations against the Gropenator and have never voted for him. I found info on the internet that he had a reputation for groping women long before Ken Lay and others recruited him to run for governor.

Also look where we are now in California. Did the wasted money for the recall help us? The budget is now more unbalanced than ever and your hero Arnie is talking about a tax increase. Didn’t Arnie promise there would never ever be a tax increase under his watch if we just got rid of Grey Davis?

Also this is the longest the state has ever been without a budget because Arnie can’t get his own Republican legislators to agree to his budget. Most of the buses going to where I live have been cut and there is now no bus service on the weekend in my area. Arnie took billions of dollars from public transportation to balance the budget and now the situation is worse than ever. This is not a Republican website even though the trolls keep insisting it is.

Comment by sowsear | 2008-09-09 18:45:05

My son’s maid of honor when he was married had an encounter with Arnie, too. She sat next to him on a plane going to a conference in CO. Let me say she was/is an especially beautiful girl, who, at the time, worked for a major newspaper. Since they were going to the same conference, he asked her if she would accompany him. (He was engaged to Maria Shriver at the time and when she appeared with him, some thought she was Maria.) After the conference, he asked her to go for a few drinks but said he wanted to change his clothes first, would she come to the hotel with him while he did? She went with him, but when he came out of the bedroom, he was in his underwear. Needless to say, she was horrified and left immediately. I never see him that I don’t think of this incident and I believe all of the supposed rumors about his supposed bad behavior.

Comment by mimi | 2008-09-09 19:55:29

The old come to my hotel room so I can change ruse.

People, please teach your daughters not to fall for such obvious crap. All it takes is to say, when you arrive at the hotel, “I’ll wait for you in the lobby.” And make a B-line to the hotel bar. Don’t have a discussion about it, you’ll lose.

You never go to a man’s hotel room unless you’re interested.

I am afraid you may be overestimating the intelligence or ability to think critically- of some of the Obama supporters-especially the younger inexperienced, idealistic or uneducated voters that the Dems have been aggressively registering to vote these past few months.

Unfortunately-for whatever reasons, these voters will most likely fall prey to emotional appeals to vote for Sen Obama-They will believe anything and everything they are told by Obama campaign team.

Not all Obama supporters can be characterized as I described above… but many can be described this way. They will vote for Sen Obama no matter what facts, proof, logic you provide them with. They wont know what to do with information you give them so they will ignore it…

Obama says she is making stuff up. He is projecting AGAIN! That’s what he does. The Repubs won’t let him get away with all of his projections. They already called him on it by blaming all liberals for doing this.

Let’s see now. Mccain gets the Dem native American vote, the dissfected woman voted, the Hispanic vote, and The Independents! He’s rallied his base vote too. Obama is trying to steal the election. Letters are going out to 300,000 voters in NJ to confirm their registration. The election officials are keeping close tabs on it. Hmmm. That means people do know about the fraud in the primaries and the RBC meeting as well as the roll call vote in Denver. Repubs are watching closely too.
But bear in mind. If the top slot is empty on a Dem ticket, it’ll be counted for Obama.

A Gallup Poll to be released Tuesday, today, shows that Senator McCain’s backing among independent voters jumped 12 percentage points in recent days, providing welcome news for a Republican candidate who has been torn between nurturing his maverick appeal to independents and trying to appease the party’s conservative base.

All I know is that Im sleeping better these days.
It’s a complete joke when Hillary goes out to stump for fraudbama and the audience chants Hillary, Hiilary and won’t stop. Obviously they came to see her and not to hear about Obama or the Dem ticket with “Plug & Play”

Obama: ‘Lipstick on a pig’

Amie Parnes reports from Lebanon, VA:

Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin’s new “change” mantra.

“You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered. “It’s still a pig.”

“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”

“We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”

The crowd apparently took the “lipstick” line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: “lipstick.”

The lies are not stopping. We know they are lies but why is no one calling for an invesdtigation-where is truth in advertising enforcement? How can he get away with all of this?

As long as he and his campaign are allowed by the msm and govt regulatory agencies to continue lying and spreading all these lies-how can we expect the truth to ever reach these young, idealistic or uninformed/misinformed voters who are just trying to do the right thing???

Obama ads are even running on Nickelodeon channel.

There is a summer Obama camp for families.

The main stream media has let us down. They wont present the facts, the questions, the truths on television. TV is oneo f the best ways to reach people.

It is up to indy journalists, indy publications, citizens to get the facts out. No lying, no hyping, no B ESing…just get the truth out -and we must DEMAND… that Sen Obama be properly vetted before elections this November..

Paraphrasing Bill Maher on Palin at 6:00 p.m. on Wolf Blitzer’s Situation Room: “I don’t like her because she is from a small town, but because she has a small brain.”

I really think the net effect of that would be: a) Bill Maher will lose quite a few viewers (the Oprah recoil), but I think McCain will increase his lead substantially with women, young and every other age.

Obama has this quality over his supporters, to diminish them.

slang for when someone tries to dress something up, but is still that something. usually used on ugly broads, when they put on a skirt and some lipstick and well, they still look like the same digusting pig.

“You put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig”

Obama has to show up at the same time to make sure the republicans don’t turn the moment into another exploitive 9/11 political promotion. Like they did at their convention, remember?

Bush used 9/11 footage politically throughtout his reelection campaign. Pretty much what I would have expected from the likes of George W. I really thought the McCain campain would be more respectful.

RabbleRouserReverandAmy,
Excellent article.
I just want to verify one thing with you because I find it difficult to believe-I do not doubt your integrity however the information is so fantastic that I can not understand why the media has not picked up on this or why the McCain/Palin team is not using it to show how Sen Obama really operates.
Also, this letter provides insight into Sen McCain’s integrity when dealing with issues that are important to the voters…and letter shows Sen Obama’s LACK OF INTEGRITY when dealing with same issues.

Did Sen Obama respond to Sen McCain’s letter back in 2006?

I refer to your link to Sen McCain’s letter chastising Sen Obama for not being serious about his involvement in bipartisan lobbying reform :

http://mccain.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressOffice.PressReleases&ContentRecord_id=a72aa248-ed25-4ec1-9c20-1386b3ee960c&Region_id=&Issue_id=

Here is just an excerpt of the letter…

McCain Releases Letter to Obama

February 6, 2006

Washington D.C. ¬– Today, Senator McCain sent the following letter to Senator Obama regarding ongoing Congressional efforts towards bipartisan lobbying reform. The following is the text from that letter:
February 6, 2006
The Honorable Barack Obama
United States Senate
SH-713
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Obama:
I would like to apologize to you for assuming that your private assurances to me regarding your desire to cooperate in our efforts to negotiate bipartisan lobbying reform legislation were sincere. When you approached me and insisted that despite your leadership’s preference to use the issue to gain a political advantage in the 2006 elections, you were personally committed to achieving a result that would reflect credit on the entire Senate and offer the country a better example of political leadership, I concluded your professed concern for the institution and the public interest was genuine and admirable. Thank you for disabusing me of such notions with your letter to me dated February 2, 2006, which explained your decision to withdraw from our bipartisan discussions. I’m embarrassed to admit that after all these years in politics I failed to interpret your previous assurances as typical rhetorical gloss routinely used in politics to make self-interested partisan posturing appear more noble. Again, sorry for the confusion, but please be assured I won’t make the same mistake again.”

RabbleRouserReverendAmy-Is this legit????Why isn’t this being made more public? Thank you so much for bringing to our attention.

Lipstick on a pig is a fairly common metaphor. Obama wasn’t speaking about Sarah. He was speaking about the ludicrous republican reform platform.

Actually, a pig is a fairly accurate description for what’s hiding in the McCain/Palin policy poke. The McCain/Palin policy is certainly going to eat money like one. It is, after all, the same damn set of policies that will make 2008 another year of record federal deficits, and 2009 another after that.

McCain has promised to balance the budget during his first term. (As if a second were likely?) When asked how he’d do this, he said he’d cut earmarks and wasteful federal spending. When asked April 20th by George Stephanopoulos of ABC News this Week for something specific he’d cut, John said this:

“Here’s $100 billion right here for you, Geroge. Two years in a row, the last two years, the president of the United States has signed into law two big spending, pork barrel-laden bills with $35 billion (in earmarks). In the years before that, $65 billion. You do away with those, there’s $100 billion right before you look at any agency.”

The problem is that earmark spending isn’t really the budget-buster, year after year. According to The Office for Management and the Budget, all earmark spending items during fiscal year 2008 come to only $16.5 billion. We spend well over that on the Iraq war in a mere two months.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/earmarks/public-site-preview/2008_appropriations_home.html

So, the McCain/Palin reform platform is totally bogus. An sham. An outright lie. It’s a money-hungry pig of an policy wearing lipstick. It won’t even matter if they teach the pig to smile.

Why would he need to insult anybody? Sticking to the facts is more than enough to show what a total load of manure the McCain/Palin campain is attempting to slip by the voters. The way they’re trying to manage it is by claiming the smell of their own policies has to do with their opponents. Trouble is, it smells a little too much like the same old load of George W. Bush manure to actually pass a sniff test.

I saw a video clip of Obama making that “lipstick ona pig” comment – it was abundantly clear he was referring to Palin. And of course, now he’s pretending that wasn’t what he meant. We’ve seen it dozens of times before with his dirt on the shoulder, 99 bitches, etc., etc, snarky comments about Hillary.

He and Michelle are both totally without the class Americans expect from an American first couple – and it has nothing to do with education or money. Sarah Palin was making a joke about herself. She may not have attended an Ivy League school, but she has more inate class than this couple of wannabees ever will.

Biden thinks Palin becoming VP is a step back for women? Does he have another aneuryism blocking the blood vessels to his brain? I suppose the DNC’s big FU to women when the Democratic primary winner was denied the nomination was a step forward for women? The selection of the obama bin biden team proves that women in their party get stepped over and stepped on so their men get what they want.

Lighten up, I saw the clip where he said he knew Alaska was next to Russia because he “saw it on a map”. He was just being facetious. I also liked his mildly amusing explanation of making sure the rights of terrorist suspects are protected. Just to make sure it’s “Muhammed the terrorist” they’ve got, and not “Muhammed the cab driver.” Obama would make a terrible president but he’s not the devil incarnate. I don’t think demonizing his every move serves our purpose any more than demonizing Sarah serves the purpose of the left.

Comment by Monet | 2008-09-09 20:05:04

“I’ll bottom line it for you – since Alaska IS next to Russia (Obama does know that much – he said he saw it on a map – I kid you not, that’s what he said), the Alaska National Guard’s 49th Missile Defense Battalion is on duty ALL THE TIME:”

Commanding a state national guard is significant, but it doesn’t provide much foreign policy experience. A governor doesn’t deploy guard units to foreign countries nor would a governor have the responsibility of the operation of national defense assets like the missile interceptors at Ft. Greely. The Alaska National Guard 49th Missile Defense Battalion fall under the regular U.S. military chain of command.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/10/us/10greely.html

“While the 49th is an Alaska National Guard unit, Colonel Hildreth reports to Col. Michael L. Yowell, commander of the 100th Missile Defense Brigade, based in Colorado.”

Governor Palin has gained executive and managerial experience through overseeing the Alaskan National Guard. No one can dispute that. Sharing a border with both Canada and Russia has given her foreign policy experience with those two countries. That however doesn’t however indicate she is more qualified than senators who have at least a decade of experience on foreign relations or armed services committees.

Having her state guard deployed to Iraq doesn’t give her foreign policy experience with the Middle East. Once a state guard is federalized for service abroad, a state governor no longer has a role in overseeing it. Governors may visit their state guards that have been deployed overseas and if they discover the guard needs training or equipment, they can lobby the federal government.

Many governors these days have some foreign policy experience dealing with a foreign country. Even a landlocked state like Iowa, the governor there may look for foreign markets and meet with foreign governments for exporting agricultural crops to. Commanding the state national guard for natural disasters and search and rescue missions within the state comes under a governor’s duties. They gain executive and managerial experience.

But arguing that Governor Palin has the experience and is qualified to be Commander in Chief of United States because the 49th Missile Defense Battalion at Ft. Greely has the care of missile interceptors would be stretching it. The 49th reports to the 100th Missile Defense Brigade (made up of the Colorado National Guard) and the 100th reports to the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command.

The same critique would be more relevant if applied to Obarky. At least Palin has governed. Barky hasn’t even governed his own mouth.

Comment by Monet | 2008-09-09 21:13:16

The experience offense and defense arguments are getting old. Senator Obama has limited experience and so does Governor Palin.

Governor Palin wasn’t chosen for the Republican ticket because of her executive, foreign policy and military experience. Arguing that she has experience in those areas, quite frankly, only illustrates how limited her experience is. She might have more experience than Senator Obama but that doesn’t erase that her experience is limited.

Governor Palin was chosen because her background of standing up to her party and special interests fit into the theme Senator McCain wanted to guide his campaign into. That she’s very conservative and would appeal to the right wing factions of the party and a woman who is raising a family might pull in disassociated women voters is a plus.

Accentuate Governor Palin’s strengths. Use her strengths to show how they compensate for her weaknesses. Her strengths show a person who can take on a job where she has no or limited experience and use her judgment to make decisions that have her and her city or state landing on their feet. She excels at knowing which way the wind is blowing when it comes to policy issues and choosing the right option. When she chooses an unpopular option, she’s good at winning the approval of her constituents and critics.

An example is the Bridge to Nowhere. She supported it, she wanted the earmark to build the bridge. But Katrina dropped by New Orleans and suddenly U.S. citizens were noticing earmarks. The bridge was becoming controversial. The bridge was also going to need another $60 million than was originally planned for. Governor Palin went against popular opinion in her state for the bridge, turned it down and took the money alloted for it and used it for other projects in Alaska. Instead of fighting for the bridge and possibly losing all of the money and/or making Alaska very unpopular with the other 49 states, she found an option that worked for the state of Alaska. With an approval rating of 80%, her state doesn’t seem too disappointed about the bridge.

The oil companies wanted tax breaks and money. She said no, refused to negotiate with them and looked for someone else to build it. Two of the oil companies are now investing in building their own pipeline. Was that her strategy? If it was, it worked. If it wasn’t, she saved her fumble.

The Governor has strengths. Build on those. Show how they compensate for her weaknesses. Arguing that because in the last 21 months as governor the Alaskan National Guard has flown 521 search and rescue missions, saved 200 lives and assisted with rescuing 77 more people and she deployed the national guard to a flood where it provided two water tanks and 30k in sandbags to local authorities, doesn’t indicate she can take over commander and chief of our military. Nor does is indicate she would fail if she did.

http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-guard6-2008sep06,0,4238012.story

Her record so far indicates a politician with good instincts, who has more successes than failures, is good at ferreting out options others might over look, she is fearless when it comes to standing up to foes, she comes out of the battle better off than her foes and she has done it all with minimum experience.

The Governor has strengths. Use them. Don’t illustrate her weaknesses with the National Guard argument.

A woman who can stare down Exxon, Conoco and BP, wait patiently for them to blink to get the result she wants, probably isn’t going to fail at foreign policy.

Comment by Monet | 2008-09-09 21:17:36

Oops. I somehow deleted the rest of this sentence: “The oil companies wanted tax breaks and money.” It should read: “The oil companies wanted tax breaks and money to build a natural gas pipeline.”

This is a good article. Actually when they said Governor of Alaska involved foreign policy, it seemed like a small stretch, but basically true, because I had heard both Gov Richardson and Gov Bush use the same argument in previous arguments – that as border states they address foreign policy. Sometimes I feel like I pay closer attention to this race than the MSM.
