Three Candidates for Vice President

webballot-3-vps_edited-1.jpg
(Cartoon by Pat Racimora)

Obama’s choice of Joe Biden, I suspect, will go down as one of worst political decisions in recent memory. John McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin will be remembered as one of the best.

Biden reinforces Obama’s worst traits: egoism, verbosity, elitism, and D.C.-insider status.

Palin, of course, reminds us of the best of McCain: fresh, unconventional, funny, and willing to battle the D.C. insiders.

Like John F. Kennedy, Obama was suppose to represent a new generation of leadership. But Biden is a dead weight on Obama; he entered the senate before much of Obama’s base was born.

Some argue that Biden, like Lyndon Johnson, brings gravitas to the ticket. Douglas Schoen is of this opinion. He writes:

Witness the single biggest decision that Obama has made thus far: choosing Joe Biden as his running mate. The pick helped squelch concerns about Obama’s perceived lack of experience and foreign policy savvy. More importantly, it signaled to moderates that when it matters, Obama makes sensible, pragmatic choices.

What Schoen fails to note is that this is a change election. Americans aren’t looking for the presidential candidate to supplement his credentials with a Washington insider, they are looking for attainable solutions for our economic woes and a smart exit strategy from Iraq.

Biden only emphasizes Obama’s weakness on foreign affairs, and he fails to bring Obama any electoral votes. Although it’s often stated that the Daley machine won the election for Kennedy in Illinois, it was actually Lyndon Johnson who guaranteed Texas for Kennedy and thus the election. Even if Kennedy lost Illinois, he would still have become president. Biden, unlike Johnson, doesn’t heal the Party’s divisions nor does he bring votes.

John F. Kennedy, in contrast to Obama, was not new to national service. Beginning as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II and then by election to the Congress and Senate, Kennedy served his country for 17 years prior to running for president. Although Kennedy at 42 was younger than Obama’s 47, he was considered an expert on foreign affairs, authoring a book on pre-War England, traveling widely, and as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Kennedy offered himself as a fully-formed presidential candidate. Kennedy did not require Johnson’s résumé in order to sell himself to the country. Johnson signaled geographical and ideological balance, and a concession that Johnson was a real threat to Kennedy during the real balloting at the convention in Los Angeles. Kennedy finished with 806 delegates to Johnson’s 409, a far bigger spread that the Obama/Clinton contest.

What Johnson did for Kennedy was to unite two factious sides of the Democratic Party, the liberals and the southern Democrats. Obama’s failure to select Hillary as V.P. only increased the division in the Party, and it gave McCain an opening.

This opening has allowed McCain to completely dominate the narrative for nearly two weeks. Not all the conversation is positive, of course, but it doesn’t need to be; Obama’s message is being drowned out.

Although I ignore Dick Morris when he speaks about the Clintons, his Machiavellian view of politics is often worth listening to closely. Here’s Morris on Palin and women:

Anecdotal evidence already suggests that women may have a gut reaction to the establishment’s sexist assault on a woman candidate – and flock to McCain. They’ve seen him stake everything on this one big move of turning toward a woman – in direct contrast to Obama’s deliberate decision not to name a woman.

They’ve seen the media and Democrats gang up on her and do their worst. And they’ve seen Palin stand up and stuff the challenge right back down the establishment’s throat. All this may have created an entirely new dynamic in the race.

Recent polling data is confirming Morris’ prediction:

An ABC News-Washington Post survey showed white women have moved from backing Obama by 8 points to supporting McCain by 12 points, with majorities viewing Palin favorably and saying she boosts their faith in McCain’s decisions.

For many women, I believe, Obama-Biden represents the worst of the boys club and McCain-Palin have become the agents of change. The vicious attacks on Palin only reinforces this narrative. Valentine Bonnaire captures the revulsion many women feel towards the Obama-Biden-DNC sexist club:

We don’t like your ticket, BOYZ. And we’ll unpack why, now. To watch you SQUIRM. Your ticket represents every man who ever groped us, whoever abandoned us, whoever BROKE our fragile FEMALE HEART, whoever BEAT US UP, whoever hurt ONE OF OUR GIRLFRIENDS, OUR BEST FRIENDS — Oh, I could go on

Instead of making a peace offering to women by picking Hillary, Obama is now in the position of attacking another woman candidate. It’s starting to look like a pattern. The headline today from the Associated Press, written by Nedra Pickler, is “Obama puts heat on Palin as she boosts GOP ticket.” She writes:

Obama said last week’s Republican National Convention did a good job of highlighting Palin’s biography — “Mother, governor, moose shooter. That’s cool,” he said. But he said Palin really is just another Republican politician, one who is stretching the truth about her record.

“When John McCain gets up there with Sarah Palin and says, `We’re for change,’ … what are they talking about?” Obama said Monday. (emphasis added)

Obama’s use of the pedestrian “cool” is meant to assure us that he is unfazed by Palin, but his need to sound unconcerned makes the desperation almost palpable. Obama is now running against Palin. He doesn’t have a choice. Obama is hemorrhaging women voters. He must stop the bleeding, but his attacks on her only serve to diminish him. Palin has become Obama’s opponent, and his attacks on her inexperience only remind voters of his own inexperience and, even worse, they remind women of what he and his supporters did to Hillary. The attacks on Palin, a woman friend told me today, are beginning to feel like personal attacks on all women.

Instead of having two political giants like Kennedy and Johnson, we have three candidates for vice president, of which Palin is the best, and McCain is reaping the benefit.

Another Reason to be a “Disaffected Democrat”: Pelosi Letting Rove off the Hook as Time Runs Out on This Congressional Session (Add This to “Impeachment off the Table”)

Biden and the crew certainly aren’t inspiring…and Pelosi takes the cake!!! It looks like Karl Rove is going to get “pass from Pelosi.” Read what frmr. gov. Don Siegelman has to say about the Democratic leadership…as they throw HIM and democracy under the bus!!!

Comment by Hispana | 2008-09-10 08:33:31

Now, why should we be surprised? That Nancy Pelosi is something else.

Comment by K. Wynne | 2008-09-10 09:14:15

She’s in George Soros’ pocket! Get it? Soros has taken over the democratic leadership and now he owns them. They do what he tells them to, just like obama.

Comment by Diana | 2008-09-10 13:18:00

Total agreement. It’s all about the money, the new God of man. They’re leading the pack expecting everyone else to sell out their souls with them to George. Soros doesn’t care about the people of this country. Did he show any concern for all the lives he affected in Black Tuesday? No. He wants to dictate and command the people of this country to believe as he does with Dean, Pelosi, Reid, and several other’s doing all his bidding. That’s why I said if Obama is the Anti-Christ. Soro’s must be the gatekeeper and we’ve all been had for years.

So Obama was going to be the agent of change but yet he makes a sexist remark with lipstick then makes excuses for his non-Presidential behavior.

Yesterday Obama didn’t use this remark to describe policy or issues it was used as a personal attack.

Obama, change you can believe in or just more of the same?

Obama starts his “girl haters club” early, even disrespecting the Girl Scouts in Chicago…from the Chicago Tribune:

I went to the Republican Headquarters here in town this past weekend, and they handed me yard signs, bumper stickers and other miscellaneous items and asked for nothing in return. The Obama Campaign should be ashamed. But, this man has no conscience…he has proved that over and over again.

Comment by karen for Clinton (sigh, McPalin now) | 2008-09-10 15:41:50

Hillary’s offices were the same. People came in and were handed everything they wanted. I even got a great Maya Angelou Rise Hillary Rise T shirt when I walked in the door since they had just had a box of them delivered. Also, they had food and beverages of all kinds in every office all day long. And they did it with glee too. The people in her offices were so warm and friendly.

One guy dropped in for stickers and signs on his way to a rally. He was a biker and a hell of big Clinton fan and really friendly guy. We stuck them all over him, his helmet, his bike, his back pack and windshield. He was a billboard for Hillary and was this tattooed tough guy with a big ol’ warm heart.

Damn, can we have Hillary back now?

Ooh look, someone in the Obama campaign MISPOKE again! Folks, read this article. Obama’s campaign could not even help out a 12 member troop of girl scouts until the Press got involved….typical!

Somewhere on the other blogs, I can’t remember where, but it was mentioned to send lipsticks to the DNC. I say we “community organize” to do just that. I have a few that I would be glad to send out today. We need to spread the word and send them far and wide. Any suggestions?

Comment by yttik | 2008-09-10 08:47:24

LOL, I am not wasting a good tube of lipstick on the the DNC! They got my blood, sweat, and tears for 30 yrs, they aren’t getting my lipstick too!

And they can just keep the change.

But you know, sending them a piece of fish wrapped in paper has some potential…

I’m kidding. Please don’t mail the DNC any rotten fish. Just let them marinate in their own stink and let karma do it’s own work.

Comment by Diana | 2008-09-10 13:27:28

rofl Dang! I was going to get involved in that one. Can I rub some fish on the lipstick? ;)

Comment by Obama is a bum | 2008-09-10 08:50:03

They would probably appreciate some more race cards. They now claim pointing out Obama was a community organizer is racist. Sean Hannity got called racist for saying Obama supporters were kool aid drinkers. About 8 months ago I deduced that all Obama has is the race card. I have been proven right.

NOTE: This is a repost from an older thread I posted earlier this morning, but I think it’s applicable here! (again, apologies for the repost)

Okay, was yesterday officially BHO’s ‘Worst Day Ever’?

In no particular order…

1) The McCain campaign releases the lovely photo of the three Alaskan officials who started the ‘troopergate’ farce in a nice family photo at Obama Headquarters in Anchorage (this is what happens when you get your news leads from Kos)

2) Joe “oh my god I am SOOO drunk” Biden says that if Palin really cared about special needs kids, she wouldn’t oppose stem cell research (OUCH!)

3) Joe “osh my goshly I’m shoooooooooo drunk” Biden says Palin’s VP ascendancy is a ‘step backwards for women’ (oh for the love of god…)

4) BHO calls Sarah a pig! (no further message required)

5) Bill Burton (how on EARTH does this dude still have a freaking job????) questions McCain’s honor. (WHAT??????)

Comment by JoseyJ | 2008-09-10 08:41:38

What’s funny is watching Kossacks whining and screaming about McCain’s new “lipstick” ad.
DKos front pagers and bots spewed their sexist screeds toward Hillary throughout the primary – callng her a bitch, posting pics of fire and laser beams coming out of her nose and ears.
Whatever it took to distract from their Empty Suit.

Obama is an ass – Karma is a bitch!

Whether men/soceity see it or not, the women moving to the McCain/Palin ticket are fed up. Hearing you will “get over it” sounds like all of the voices of the past that we heard when there was an injustice that rattled us to our bones. Not just when it came to politics, either. We can’t undo what was done to Hillary in the primaries. We can’t personally demote KO or Tweety or shake Donna Brazile by the shoulders or blow air in Dean’s stethoscope, but we can do this one thing: we can take a stand for our OWN PRINCIPLES and beliefs. We know right down to our core that Barack Insane 0bama violates everything we believe in in our DNA. And that is why we are not voting for him. John McCain had my vote without Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin has won my vote on her own efforts. Something that neither B0 or the other guy have made any efforts to do and frankly, no amount of effort will do it. I’m not sure what they are going to do to increase their base. Good luck with that.

Yes, remember Hillary telling us she would fight for real universal health care, she would take the constitution out of the deep freeze, get rid of the mercenaries, the outsourcing, fund research to cure for breast cancer?

What other issues did she champion that are no longer part of the national debate?

They robbed us!

Dean, Pelosi, Brazile, Germond, Roosevelt (to his everlasting shame) Biden, the Kennedys, Kerry and Obama have robbed us, our small business owners, our veterans and solders, and future generations.

And I add the list all those elected and appointed Democrats who took part, or took money, or just stood silent, while knowing full well what was going on. To he&& with them too.

Comment by Diana | 2008-09-10 13:39:40

I’m still hoping McCain will nominate Hillary over health care, or education. Wherever she feels she’s needed. Something that she can tell these people to take the threats to unseat her and shove it. She can campaign from now till the election for Obama, it’s going to get ugly when she runs for re-election to the senate. They want to destroy her. We’re going to have to be vigilant to see to it they don’t.

Comment by AngryWhitePerson | 2008-09-10 08:31:09

Cool. If Obama really was unfazed by Palin, he would simply keep his mouth shut. Guttersnipes, obnoxious insults and whines are uncool, Obama. Answering every charge that the opposing VP launches is NOT YOUR JOB. How can you lead if you can’t comprehend nor follow simple protocol??? Presidents lead, dude. Try it.

And I don’t see how a “candidate of change” forfeits public financing. Now Obama must ask Americans who certainly have other things to worry about to cough up millions of dollars. How is this a reformer? Says a lot about what kind of leader he is: selfish and snide.

Comment by Liberty Belle not for Obama | 2008-09-10 08:54:10

In addition to the lipstick on a pig comment, don’t forget that Obama challenged Palin to a game of H-O-R-S-E on the basketball court. Thus, he seems to want to compete with the Veep choice more than the top of the ticket.

Palin does not stand for any of the typical democratic principals/platform. She is against a woman’s right to choose, yet mentions “choice” when talking about her daughter’s decision to keep her baby. To assume that because someone supported Hillary, they would automatically support Palin is insulting. They are nothing alike. It was not about voting for a woman, it was about voting for a woman that stood up for what we believe in and for getting this country back on the right track.

Comment by ssmith | 2008-09-10 09:10:09

And yes, please continue to call us “STUPID”, it will make us so much more happier when we pull the lever for mccain/palin.

Also, don’t forget to call us the other Obama fauvorite terms for women “pigs”, “F**king wh*res”…
and so, so many others..

Comment by Skiron | 2008-09-10 09:31:57

Comment by obamaphobe | 2008-09-10 09:36:29

I think that it really doesn’t matter what his intent was…it was a poor choice of words, once again, displaying his ignorance and poor judgment. He appears immature and defensive. Not at all the man he tries to portray himself as. He’s a nice enough guy and has great potential, but he’s not ready. Not yet!

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-09-10 09:44:18

He’s a nice enough guy? Um, you’re the nice one. Jerk off, arrogant, lazy and stupid leap to mind when I see him.

Comment by obamaphobe | 2008-09-10 10:02:51

You’re right. I pulled out my nice hat for the moment. Probably because I don’t believe Obama was saying the “lipstick” remark against Palin….just bad timing. But, what I truly think is that he has no conscience and will do anything and hurt anybody to get to the top. My ex-husband was like that. He was controlling, narcissistic, and abusive. Stepped on everyone in his way…including me. I see the same traits in Obama. The truth is, he scares me.

Comment by JML | 2008-09-10 11:12:59

It’s WORSE if he wasn’t purposely referring to Sarah Palin with his lipstick comment. It shows a total lack of awareness of how it would be interpreted, something any 6th-grader could’ve deduced.

I don’t know about Harvard, but at my state-supported university, we learned how to synthesize information. Of course we also learned it was not acceptable to plagiarize.

Ooooooh he dusted “her” off. Oh what a MISOGYNISTIC thing to do. Need I remind you, this is politics, you need to grow a backbone and stop whining. If you can’t take the heat, get the f out of the kitchen.

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-09-10 09:39:36

Maybe Obama was not smart enough to realize what he was saying, but by the sound of his supports (the misogynists,) they sure knew what it meant. Is that why Obama then added the fish smelling unfunny joke? Me thinks YES.

Now, see, that’s where you are wrong by stereotyping. I voted for Hillary in the Ohio primaries because I felt she was more experienced than Obama.I didn’t always agree with her issues either. So you’re making a far leap to assume that I have to agree with all of Palin’s issues. I do think that she is more experienced than Obama and Biden put together. She will get my vote because of that, not because she has a vagina and I agree with all of her stances. Now go back and play with your friends.

She is Pro-Life, not anti-choice. Now can you kindly discontinue using our uteruses as leverage to browbeat us back into the Dem party? We’re not looking back. This particular 32-year-old, Pro-Choice Latina voted for Hillary in the NJ primary and I can’t wait to pull the lever for the McCain/Palin ticket first week in November.

It is a protest-vote understand. A vote against misogyny. Against sexism. Against election and caucus fraud. Against elitism and arrogance. Against lib media and giant conglomerate tampering with a federal election.

And every time you guys go for the uterus, we go further and further away. Your party (and my former party) has become a union of elitists and drunken frat-boys running amock a sorority house during a panty-raid.

A vote for McCain is also a vote for war with Iran, and possibly a new cold war with Russia, and a vote for more conservative Supreme Court justices, which any sane person would say trumps all the reasons you just mentioned.

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-09-10 10:00:25

Douche. Even if McCain wanted to take out Iran, how the hell are we going to do it? The Iraq Fiasco has left us unable to do anything but lob a few missles at Iran but McCain knows that would thrust the region into further chaos. He is former military, he knows how bad it is right now. It will take at least a decade maybe longer to get the military back to full strength and even longer to deal with the problems associated with the war. When I think of putting Barky in charge of rebuilding our armed forces I shudder. I would have preferred Hillary, but I’ll have to take McCain.

Christ you’re stupid. You realize our Air Force has been barely scratched by the Iraq war, right? You know they’re just itching to send their B-2’s out to drop a couple thousand bombs all over Iran.
Moreover, McCain, being the impressionable old fool that he is, is totally owned by his neo-con handlers at this point. They’re the ones who would force the issue and prompt him to start Shock and Awe part 2. And they don’t care if we can’t invade and do nation-building like we did in Iraq. For them it’s enough to bomb them into smithereens and let the chips fall where they may.

Yeah you idiot, bomb the shit out of Iran, destabilize it and then have no ground troops to secure the place so it spirals out of control like Iraq did. Douche. It’s the vacuum left behind after an attack that allows terrorists, dirtbags and opportunists to take over. Just like Afghanistan, after we left and Iraq when we threw out Saddam and his party. We didn’t have anyone take over and not enough troops to maintain control. Therefore Al Queda and other power hungry dirtbags found fertile ground. Pick up a history book will ya?

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-09-10 10:42:41

Oh and like I said, Mccain was one of the first to slam Bush on his handling of Iraq. McCain knows exactly the shambles out military is in. His son is a Marine. Those guys and their equipment have been creamed. The Army is being held together with aging equipment and prozac. McCain knows this. Barky thinks they speak Arabic in Afghanistan…yikes.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-09-10 10:59:18

Another very good essay, Bud. And I love Pat’s cartoon. Your closure really says it all:

“Palin has become Obama’s opponent, and his attacks on her inexperience only remind voters of his own inexperience and, even worse, they remind women of what he and his supporters did to Hillary. The attacks on Palin, a woman friend told me today, are beginning to feel like personal attacks on all women.”

The Republicans watched the primary very, very carefully. And they had their ear to the ground. The support the Dems took for granted, the girls getting in line, has turned around to bite them.

Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” remark just reminds us of his time spent on the streets of Chicago doing drugs. This is the type of remark a low class individual would make about a high class honorable Governor. He can’t compete on her level, so he reverts to trashy comments more suitable to his time on the streets of Chicago.

BTW, why is he competing with her at all? I thought he was running for Prez. She is running for VP. Am I missing something here? I thought he was running against McCain. Why is he trying to belittle Governor Palin? Isn’t that Biden’s job? Or does he not trust Biden to be effective? You picked him Bammy.

B W, good article. Bush first and most serious mistake when he took over in 2000 was to surround himself with old men, the old guard that his father knew well. I knew that once he did that his presidency was going to fail, although not exclusively for that.

Had Bush surrounded himself in 2000 with young people, younger than him or about his age, his presidency would have been a great success and we would now be electing two very different candidates under much much different circumstances.

Obama’s selection of Biden is a short history of Bush, a micro micro history since I think that alone will probably take him to defeat. Inexperience. And I’m glad.

He is twice as idiot as Bush.

Has anybody seen anything on CNN about lipstick on a pig?

Fox has shown McCain’s ad and they’ve talked about the controversy with several people.

MSNBC has talked about it and are basically trying to defend bambi – kell surpreeze.

But, I’ve been switching channels back and forth and have seen NOTHING about it at all on CNN – maybe I missed it – hoping so. This worries me because it would mean they’re blacking it out and it portends their future censoring of all bambi controversy where McCain is on the winning side.

When the republicans start putting out all the dirt on barky, will CNN be blacking all of it out? This scares the crap outta me that a major cable network could censor the news this way.

Please, somebody tell me they’ve seen the lipstick on a pig stuff on CNN!

Comment by MrMike | 2008-09-10 10:08:16

I don’t know about CNN but their spin off Headline News* had a hit piece about the Pentecostal Church that Palin left about 6 years ago for a more mainstream denomination. What they didn’t say spoke volumes.
Sarah Palin left the church on her own volition, not because it was a political embarrassment. The fact she left it proved that the story was nothing but a thinly veiled hit piecs had me wondering what new scandal had emerged or was about to emerge about Obama’s church or its pastor.

* I think the TV is set to Headline News, it’s in the cafeteria at work and though I don’t eat there I hear Nancy Missing Blond Cheerleader Grace at lunch time when I pass thru.

Comment by JML | 2008-09-10 11:25:25

Great. I hope the Dems try to make a big deal out of the church Sarah Palin LEFT. Because it will bring back up the obvious question of, you know, LEAVING CHURCHES. Or, NOT leaving churches.

It doesn’t matter what church Sarah Palin left or why she did. If the Dems try to make an issue of this, all it will do is remind Americans that Obama worshipped for 20 years under the leadership and guidance of Rev. “Naw Naw Naw, Goddamn America” Wright.

A great cartoon, and a very interesting and well-done story. In my view, not only does it look like the three of them are running for VP, but that Sara is having to battle both Obama and Biden for the VP position. Also, I think that from now on politics will never be the same. The VP position, maybe Cheney started it, will never be seen as insignificant. As the Democrats like to point out, the VP is only a heartbeat away from being in charge, and the truth is that is how it has always been. It is in this race that the obvious is being looked at. Just like it is obvious that words are not the same as deeds.

Obama’s “it’s cool” comment about Palin was in response to crowd booing — guess he realized that wouldn’t play too well so he added the comment.

Picking Biden also negated the reason often given as to why he shouldn’t/couldn’t pick Hillary i.e. that she is “old Washington”. Biden is even OLDER Washington. Picking VA Governor Keane or someone less politically entrenched would have filled the bill except that Oops! there was that problematic experience meme to deal with.

I assumed that when Hillary wasn’t chosen that McCain would choose a woman (he had a few to pick from). I mean — No Brainer. I had also heard some time ago that the pick would be “a surprise” so I think they were eyeing Palin in case Hillary wasn’t chosen. Tough Noogies, BO, you had your chance. You made your bed, now learn to lie in it.

Pat, your cartoon highlights the argument that there is only one real choice for President….John McCain. Obama’s focus seems to be on defensively targeting Palin. He apparently sees her as a more formidable obstacle than McCain to his Presidential aspirations. However, he is making tactical mistakes that are backfiring. No doubt the lipstick on a pig comment has just lost him a lot of female (and male) voters. If any pro-Hillary supporters were still on the fence about who to vote for, my guess is they are leaving the Obama camp in droves. Unfortunately, it looks like the voters are being short-changed by media focus on dirty politics and a diminishing focus on the stands of the candidates on important issues. I think we are being distracted by increasing amounts of crap being hurled by both sides as we attempt to wade through the swamp to the voting booth. I don’t think things are going to get “prettier” in the days ahead. The political advisers for the campaigns seem to think that what gets the public’s attention is not discussions of boring issues like the economy, health care, foreign affairs and Iraq, but who is making the dirtiest, most offensive comments and attacks. They think the public is stupid and has the mentality that makes so many people be willing to pay high prices to watch a boxing match or a wrestling match or a football game. They revel in seeing their favorite contender deliver a bloody beating to the opposition. And the media knows this sells papers and and brings television viewers. So pull up a chair, get a beer and prepare to watch a bloody messy fight in the days ahead. You will have no problem finding a TV station that will cover it. Be sure to have a high definition set for a clearer view of the mud and the blood.
