Charlotte, North Carolina: Barack Obama’s Political Dumping Ground

Charlotte, North Carolina, will be the site where the Obama campaign will cynically drop the race card again and again with the “hope” that racial polarization will garner a victory in the Tarheel state; it will be the dumping ground for all the race baiting and political toxic waste the Obama campaign will deploy in order to eek out a victory in November. I quote the an article published in yesterday’s edition of the Asheville Citizen-Times:

CHARLOTTE – Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden, campaigning in North Carolina where black votes could help swing the state to the Democrats, said today that electing a black person to the White House would be transformative.

Biden said the policies of running mate Barack Obama make his presidency even more urgent and declared this to be the most important election that any living person has seen in their lifetime. But he particularly singled out the meaning of electing someone who is black.

“That will be a transformative event in American politics and internationally,” Biden said. “That all by itself will be significant.”

North Carolina last voted for a Democrat in 1976, when Jimmy Carter won much of the South. But the state has a large population of blacks galvanized by Obama’s candidacy, and the Illinois senator has competed aggressively here for months.

The race card will have to be dropped aggressively in North Carolina, for African-Americans comprise only 21.7% of the state’s population. This is by far smaller than the number of African-Americans in states such as Mississippi and Louisiana. Compounding this demographic constraint for the racially polarizing Obama campaign is recent polling data: McCain respectively leads Obama 17 points and 20 points in recent Research 2000/DailyKos and SurveyUSA/ABC11-WTVD polls. The Obama campaign is desperate, and they will try to mobilize each and every single African-American in that state to vote for Barack Obama, even if that entails asking Joe Biden to go for broke at the Phillip O. Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina. Yes, the Obama campaign had the audacity to asked the man who uttered to following questionable words to drop the race card in inner city Charlotte:

“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Biden said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

Everyone, it seems, suffers from amnesia when race is invoked in any political discussion. Perhaps one should say those inspired by Joe Biden’s Charlotte, North Carolina, race card have been hoodwinked and bamboozled. Or maybe Michelle Obama simply prefers the word “storybook” to the phrase “fairy tale” when Democrats discuss her husband’s candidacy. Too bad Michelle failed to remember that Bill Clinton was referring to her husband’s Iraq policy and not to her husband when she shamelessly criticized the former President at the Trumpeter Awards before the racially charged South Carolina primary. But why should we expect consistency from those who recklessly exploit the politics of race for electoral and personal gain?

How odd it is that Biden is now the weapon the Obama campaign will deploy in North Carolina as they racially polarize that state’s population in the name of cynical electoral politics. Michelle’s deck of cards must be out of aces of race. For on 5 MAY it was Michelle Obama who laid down her entire hand at the Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte on the eve of that state’s important and in many ways decisive primary. I quote The Hill:

It was an hour-long tale of resentment and anger.

First, she complained at great length that her husband had been treated unfairly in the Democratic presidential race. Every time he made a move forward, she said, “they” — she never spelled out exactly who “they” were — moved the goalposts a bit farther away from him.

First, “they” said he couldn’t raise the money necessary to run a big-league campaign.

But “once he proved that he could raise the money, then all of a sudden money didn’t matter,” Mrs. Obama told the crowd. “Everybody said, ‘Well, money isn’t important.’ ”

Then “they” said the test for Obama would be whether he could build a political organization. But “once it was built, they said it’s not an organization — the stakes changed again.”

Next, “they” said Obama had to win Iowa. But “once he won Iowa, then all of a sudden Iowa was no longer important.”

“They” had moved the bar again. This time, Obama had to win a primary state.

“Then we rolled into South Carolina,” Mrs. Obama said. “Then you know what they said? They said South Carolina didn’t count, because Barack was supposed to win.”

Then came Super Tuesday, and after that Obama’s stretch of victories in a series of primary and caucus states.

Still, Mrs. Obama complained, “they” tried to undermine her husband every step of the way.

“We’ve learned that we’re still living in a time and in a nation where the bar is set, right?” she said.

“They tell you all you need to do is do these things and you’ll get to the bar, so you go about the business of doing those things.

“You start working hard and sacrificing, and you think you’re getting closer to the bar, you’re working and you’re struggling, you get right to that bar, you’re reaching out for the bar, and then what happens?

“They raise the bar. Raise the bar. Shift it to the side. Keep it just out of reach.

“And that’s just what’s been happening in this race.”

According to Michelle Obama on 5 MAY, “they,” the Clintons, were raising the bar on her husband, and they did this to him solely as a result of her husband’s “race.” It is a scenario Michelle claims she understands. I quote the author of The Hill article again:

Even Michelle Obama herself. “I’m not supposed to be here,” she tells the crowd. “I am a statistical oddity. As a black girl raised on the south side of Chicago, I’m not supposed to be here. I wasn’t supposed to go to Princeton. They said my test scores were too high” — surely a verbal slip, because in the past she has said she was told her test scores were too low — “I wasn’t supposed to go to Harvard Law School, because they said it might be a little too hard for me. And I certainly am not supposed to be standing here with a chance to become the next first lady of the United States of America.”

The Obama campaign complained about the raising of the bar during the North Carolina primary, but now they are clearly lowering the bar with more race baiting and more racial polarization in Charlotte, North Carolina, a city they view as a receptacle for their political and racial toxic waste. First it was Michelle Obama, and now it is Joe Biden: same message, different people, more divisiveness, more distractions, more sleaze, more race cards.

The people of Charlotte, North Carolina, will be hoodwinked and bamboozled into submission. But even worse is how Obama will subject all the African-Americans of that city and state who will vote for him to so much “okie-doke” if he manages to make it to the White House on their backs. Is this post-racial politics, or am I right to view it as so much regression?

The “creative class” has been lighting matches over an open “gas can” for months. No matter the result of the Nov 4 election, it is going to explode.

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-09-15 16:36:55

Yes, the creative class has sure been coming unhinged over anyone who opposes Obama. But now, it’s starting to cost them, badly.

Two YouTube videos of FOX News crushing photographer Jill Greenberg and The Atlantic magazine. Greenberg, hired by the magazine to take photos of McCain for a cover shot and feature article, admitted on her blog that she tried to make McCain look ‘evil’ and as old and bad as possible. She also created Photoshops of McCain with blood on his face, etc.

The Atlantic has apologized to McCain and said that they may pursue legal action against Greenberg. The second video has Atlantic editor James Bennet discussing his regret over the incident. The first video is FOX & Friends discussing the photographic/photoshop slander of McCain by Greenberg:

My spouse says he will be “mad at me and blame me” if Obama loses, and that “we will have problems”.

This former Dem says Dems like my spouse are getting desperate and irrational.

Comment by HC | 2008-09-15 17:18:25

My family is full of Obamabots too – no fun – but I will not be silenced or change my mind.

I have had enough. Nobama for me. Ever.

Comment by tek | 2008-09-15 17:58:40

Isn’t it ironic? I had this trouble with my Republican relatives in 2000 & 2004. This year, the Republicans supported Hillary and now I can’t talk politics with my Democratic family & friends. I won’t say how I’m voting and won’t discuss Obama with them. You can’t change anybody’s mind by arguing and you can’t reason with Obama supporters anymore than you can argue with Dubya supporters.

Some of my family members want to write-in Ron Paul-I am now searching for the public annoucement I have heard he made asking people not to do that-that if he causes McCain to lose a state by 2 or 300 votes it would destroy him. I am hoping I can find the proof he said that to show those family members that what I said is the truth. What I said to them was-a line left blank, or a write in for 3rd party-to stay at home-or NO vote-is a vote for obama. People we do not have the luxury of doing those things this time around!
I worked my big tail off for Hillary but I can see for my self that if we allow obama to enter the Whitehouse he may never leave! Further more if he is elected we can kiss much of what we hold dear to our hearts good-bye. I personally cannot do that to my kids and my grand-kids. Two of my neices just had babies-I cannot give them to obama and I will do everything in my power to stop him.
If people don’t take a stand now you are either for him or agaist him-the only way to be against him is to VOTE NOV 4TH McCain-Palin. period.

Comment by Mercedes | 2008-09-15 17:07:00

I think you are absolutely correct.

Although I am hoping the situation can be mitigated if McCain, as president, has to work with a Democratic Congress minus Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and with Hillary as majority leader. A strongly bipartisan administration under McCain would help a great deal also.

First test is tomorrow with the Kerry-O’Reilly matchup in Massachusetts.

McCain Campaign needs to run an ad for the Blacks in North Carolina. The ad should be revealing how Obama voted against funds for Katrina victims and how Governor Palin donated money to victims of Katrina with her windfall fund that she saved money from slashing wasteful spending.
Governor, and soon to be Vice President, Palin is head of the National Guard in Alaska and supports the troops. She is not afraid to visit the troops without the presence of the media!
Maybe the soldiers in NC want to hear about that?

Isn’t NC a fertile ground for vote fraud? Someone in the State Elections Dept. is in the tank for Oblahblah and is co-conspirator of fixing the election for a huge bribe profit.
They need to count all the votes and check all the phony registrations.

Comment by FranSC | 2008-09-15 22:20:50

To Maverick: You need to report the person you refer to that is on the NC Board of Elections that you suspect will try to “fix” the Nov gen. election and what you know to support that claim.

You should call the NC Attorney General’s office and find out where and to whom you should report this possible suspect. Don’t worry about whether the claims are true or not since you have no way of knowing that. Most importantly, don’t wait until after-the-fact when it seems nothing can be done even if fraud is certain.

In addition, find out from the AG’s office how to go about being an observer at the polls as well as election central where the votes come in and are counted. Whether this is a sure-fire way to control such fraud or not, it can’t hurt.

Electing the first woman to the white house that has gotten there on her own merits without playing the leftist victimization card of gender while simultaneously meeting the demands of raising a family that has presented its own set of challenges would be truly transformative.

Comment by NoBamaNoWay | 2008-09-15 16:45:58

hillary DID get their on her own. SHE helped BILL get where he got; she wasn’t just staying home baking cookies, as you’ll recall. i know there is no sexism, but when hillary was just starting out, there was what, about 1% women in the highest levels of government? she might have figured it was safer to help her husband than to try to go into politics herself. and for that, she is slandered by the likes of low-lifes like you. hillary has earned every damn thing she’s got, and she didn’t need any help from terrorist buddies and benefactors, like mr. hussein.

playing the leftist victimization card of gender.

Wynterskye, to whom are you referring here?

Comment by Wynterskye | 2008-09-15 17:36:56

I did NOT intend to demean Hillary in any way, didn’t even use her name. My comment is directed at those loony leftist like Steinem that seek to keep women down as victims of male gender discrimination as much as so called black leaders like Jesse Jackson keep blacks in their place (yes, a racist term in this case black on black racism) by demeaning those who so dare as break out from the victimization mold and seek the opportunities (the message of MLK) that have always been available to them. Without victims, the leftist elitist is powerless, hence all the vitriol spewed at Palin from the feminist left as she presents the worst of all role models for their daughters that demonstrates a woman can have it all and gain it independently on her own terms.

The far left abhors rugged individualism in that they believe the people lack sophistication and intelligence to shape their own future and destiny and need to be guided and ruled by a permanent class of political elites. The far leftist agenda is a rejection of Jeffersonian thought which acknowledges the common person, the laborer, the farmer, vested with inalienable rights can join with others so endowed with the same rights in a system of self governance in which government is subservient to the people.

Comment by NoBamaNoWay | 2008-09-15 20:54:55

agreed, especially on the rugged individualism part; there seems to be a divide between leftist big city dwellers and the rest of us. i don’t necessarily support the ‘making it on her own’ part because we all get help, and why shouldn’t a husband and wife help each other and work as a team? seems like that should be the ideal, instead of ‘turning the tables’ so to speak, and have women dominate and men all stay home, out of sight, out of mind, while the woman gets all the glory. it just seems like hillary is taking a lot of crap because, god forbid, she decided to help her husband with his career (for a number of years) instead of working on her own.

Obama Has Issues And He’s Dead Wrong on All of them!

Empty rabble rousing rhetoric

This is the problem with blindly entrusting your future to an individual who has accomplished nothing of any consequence in his past. It’s not hope you’re feeling, its euphoric blind faith.

As is always the case with career rabble rousers (aka community organizers), the fact that they have never been in the game does not hamper their ability to talk a good game. Obama says that words mean something and without any deeds to talk about, he’s right. However, compared to action and real experience, or in his case a complete lack thereof, empty words mean damn little.

whoever wrote that needs to do a little more research

While I do not dispute her claims about who is paying…what is messed is this

in 1960 breakdown between Individual and Corporate contributions to federal revenue was something like 52/48

in 2004 it was 87/13 (and that included payroll tax which means they aren’t paying CRAP in federal revenue)

Despite the claims our corporations are burdened by tax more than any other country in the world, we have found ourselves dragged into international court with sanctions applied for being a CORPORATE TAX HAVEN.

fact is, under our current laws and policies, corporate entities have more rights than citizens

Comment by Kal | 2008-09-15 17:27:20

That’s why they were ‘incorporated’ in the first place — as entities imbued with all the civil and legal rights of ‘natural persons,’ corporations embody the obedience women were casting off over a hundred years ago. And look what hath been wrought!

How about their ability to mobilize people who are not in the state, but come from an adjacent one (or far away?) and vote in caucuses, primaries, etc.

And, if Obama is the Messiah, how about the ability to raise the dead, or lift their names from tombstones, and have them vote, too?

On Obama and Freeman:

Up close, the maw of the money machine can seem a weird place. (Having purchased a ticket in order to bypass Obama’s press sentries, I am the only reporter, it appears, who is free to roam the event.) When Morgan Freeman comes over to greet Obama, the senator begins bowing down both hands in worship. “This guy was president before I was,” says Obama, referring to Freeman’s turn in Deep Impact and, clearly, getting a little ahead of his own bio. Next, a nod to Bruce Almighty: “This guy was God before I was.” (Okay, more than a little ahead.) But Freeman is eating it up. Leaning in, he tells the senator to win it. “I will,” Obama replies. “That’s why I’m running.” [Source.]

If you have no doubt that Obama thinks he’s G-d, then you shouldn’t now.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-09-15 17:39:06

So the President can be an inexperienced idiot as long as he’s the right color?

America has been through that before with non-AA candidates.

Ultimately, the public rejected them.

If Obama should win and he’s not up to the job the public will rip him apart. That’s why he and Biden are leaning heavily on race. If things go wrong, no matter how bad things get, it’s not Obama’s fault. Any criticism will be because he’s black (of course his mom was white but let’s not talk about that).

Truthteller, you are right. This is regressive. As I have stated many times, when I think of Barack Obama I do not think of him in terms of his race, or the color of his skin. However, everytime the race card is played by his campaign, I cringe. I do not like being called “racist” (and I have been personally attacked like this) because I choose not to support him. I do not support Barry because he is not trustworthy, is opportunistic, narcissistic, manupilatitive, arrogant, sexist and most of all UNQUALIFIED! It has nothing to do with the color of his skin. And the playing of the race card time and time again serves to drive a wedge between people, a wedge that becomes harder and harder to close as time goes by.

I wonder if Joe Biden is having second thoughts?

You’re right, Biden is enjoying himself, just like I do on a roller coaster ride. When its over I say, ‘That was fun.’ When its over there’s nothing left, a memory gone the next day. Biden is a fucking user and he knows where this is heading and he doesn’t give a damn what he says as long as it makes B.O. and Axelrod smile. I hope he has one helluva hangover.

I hope Hillary does not join the VP ticket with Obama. Joe Biden better not step down. Early voting is September 30th. So if Biden was going to step down and let Hillary become the Vp nominee it would have to be before then.

Obama is a loser and HRC needs to leave him sinkk on this ship by himself.

Comment by FranSC | 2008-09-15 23:06:28

1) For better, for worse, Biden is the VP Nominee.
Politicians learned that harsh lesson in 1972 when the McGovern campaign had Eagleton step aside due to the revelations of his history of depression and shock treatments.

The nominee only gets one shot at the VP selection and it better be a good one. After that, it is a lose/lose situation regardless of the reasons and regardless of the assets of the second choice.

2) The worst possible outcome in 2008 would be if Hillary, for whatever reason would become part of this ticket which has always been a disaster waiting to happen whether it comes before the election or after.

Comment by John House | 2008-09-16 06:07:15

It would be nice to see a Central American-style coup where Hillary marched in with the generals of the armed forces and took over the country.

The foundation of Obama’s house of cards (RACE) is crumbling.

Obama is doing the running man dance now. Just shuffling and sliding his feet up and down, but not going anywhere.

He is losing traction. What does he do? What does he know?

Class-Warfare and race card politics: Chicago style.

PATHETIC!!

Quick comment on Obama’s act of treason:
I hope the Iraqi govt. has audio and video of their meetings with Obama. The media is circling their wagons around Obama to try and insulate The One. Need to release the proof and expose Obama’s words and deeds.

How long can the media keep their charade up? A tape of Obama’s comments sure would make it difficult for the media to cover it up.

Obamas weakest point is his character. Yeah Obama has no policy plans but he is not a republican, and given Bush 25% approval rating, that is enough to giive Obama cover on the policy issues.

McCain needs to stop saying he wont question Obamas patriotism, and he needs to stop saying how honorable Obama is, because Obama is just slamming him on character issues, calling him to old and a liar. People will hear it enough and they will start to believe it.

Playing nice on character did not help HRC. But I think probably that McCain’s camp has internal polls telling them that they got all the mileage out of those issues they could get and to move on. I notice that McCain came out today with an ad on the economy and a strong stump speech in Fl on the same. Listening to Palin in CO I heard the same message on the economy. Charles Lemos at By the Fault put up the McCain ad with a list of McCain’s positions on the economy. McCain is stronger in that area than you might think and I think the campaign knows that they must move to that territory and claim it. They can’t win this thing with lipstick, ageism and sexism.

I disagree. This election has just gotten started. The vast majority of voters are only now beginning to pay any attention at all. The election will still be a referendum on Obama and who he really is. You are right that those rich deposits haven’t been mined yet, but timing is everything. Plus it will be the 527s that will do that not the McCain campaign. It’s still to early, just wait. There are five or six killer issues from birth circumstances, to Ayers to foreign passports and dual citizenships to muslim ties and at the core – Obama’s lack of American roots. Any ONE of those is enough to take him out and I am confident there is substance behind at least several. And that doesn’t even count the whitey tape.

Now, if we go by the polls and honest citizenry, we will see McCain-Palin win the state.

Trisha… I will point out that felons, ONCE THEY HAVE COMPLETED THEIR SENTENCE OR PAROLE, are once again eligible to vote. Something the system doesn’t tell them or just outright lies to them about.

I’ve registered people who did something naughty as kids and got a felony conviction. They’re 50 years old, never been in trouble again and have led a productive life and they though they STILL couldn’t vote. You cannot imagine their elation when they found out it wasn’t true that they had lost their right to vote for life. I even had one guy who teared up!

The magical thing that happened in the race was the Wright rant. Prior to that the assumption was that whenever race comes up it will be to Obama’s benefit. But Wright changed all that. Now when he plays the race card it only reminds people that he cynically planned his whole campaign around race, rather than around, say… country first, and on top of that HE is the one who has surrounded himself with racists from Wright to Farrakahn to Michelle. People are way beyond “wouldn’t it be cool to elect a black president,” and are now concerned with who the man is beneath the skin, and if there is anything there at all.

Speaking of gaffes, Senator Obama had the following this morning:

“If we’re going to ask questions about, you know, who has been promulgating negative ads that are completely unrelated to the issues at hand, I think I win that contest pretty handily,” Obama said.

Now, if John McCain or Sarah Palin had admitted to this, the media would have a huge headline: “McCain-Palin Admit to Running Negative Campaign to Hide the Issues!!!” So, what does ABC do, they untangle for their favorite genius:

“What Obama apparently meant was that McCain, not Obama, has put out more negative ads.”

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=5803765&page=1

This must have just been more ‘nuance’ from Obama the great communicator and Ivy-league genius. Kind of like the ‘my muslim faith’ line. Or the ‘I will end the war immediately and I am the only one who didn’t support it’ line that he used to be up on Senator Clintons ‘faulty’ judgement.

I agree there is 5 or 6 killer issues McCain could hit Obama with, so why wait ?

I can understand if he only had 1 or 2 issues to hit Obama with, then you might one to save them till later, but McCain could put out one every week or two till election day.

If McCain waits to unload them all at once at the very end, then it will just be too much at once, and people wont be able to comprehend it, and they will think it is just McCain piling on, and it will have the same efect as when the media tried to hit Palin with everything at once when she was first named the vp.

Not to mention people beging early voting in a few weeks.

It is unexcusable that at this point in the election we still have not had the McCain campaign bring up Rezko, Ayers, Rev. Wright, obamas desire to have our kids speak spanish etc.

I live in a battleground state (ohio) and I see all the commercials. I see tons of negative Obama ads, and the democratic 527’s already have two hard hitting ads out against McCain, I saw the sex ed to kindergarteners ad once and then it dissapered, and I have not see any Republican 527’s yet. I have seen the ads on websites, but nothing on the airwaves. My guess is that McCain has put a redlight to the repub 527′2, thinking that they are unhonorable.

Pretty soon republic donors are going to stop giving, if they dont see McCain fight.

Now I see Obama is accusing McCain of being dirty. Obama is running a smart campaign. He puts out all the dirty ads, and then accuses McCain of being dirty, so he gets his cake and eats it to. And he knows he can get away with it, because all McCain talks about is windmills …

Comment by jangles | 2008-09-15 18:08:26

With all due respect—if Obama is doing all that negative stuff and it’s so good, why is he not dominating the polls? Why is blue WA in a 2 point dead heat? Why is NY solid blue now a “swing” state? The McCain campaign has been dominating air time with Palin and it seems to be working with voters. Palin is out on her own this week with her husband and she is delivering for McCain. I saw 4 of the Repub 527 ads on By the Fault and I assume they are running somewhere. I think McCain won the lipstick war, he won the old man doesn’t know how to use a computer (because of POW injuries) and today we have a big smear story McCain will win on an Atlantic Monthly cover story and photo that was done by a photographer who brags about how she tried to make McCain look evil—and Atlantic falling all over itself in apologia. All of these add up to an Obama who is mean spirited and has a pattern of trashing his opponents, using sexism, having supporters who are zealots of the worst sort. I think McCain is running a very smart campaign.

FOX NEWS- CAMPAIGN DENIAL!! NO SUCH DISCUSSION EVER TOOK PLACE

Barack Obama’s campaign denied a New York Post report Monday that said the Democratic presidential candidate privately tried to persuade Iraqi political leaders to stall an agreement on scaling back American troops in Iraq while publicly campaigning for a speedy withdrawal.

Obama’s request for a delay was a major theme of his talks with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said in an interview with the Post.

Obama also tried to persuade the U.S. commanders, including Gen. David Petraeus, to offer a “realistic withdrawal date,” the Post reported. The commanders declined, the newspaper said.

A top foreign policy adviser to Obama sat in on the meetings between the candidate and Iraqi officials this summer and said no such conversations occurred, the campaign said Monday.

However MSNBC covered exactly what he said back in JUNE!!!

OBAMA’s TALK WITH IRAQI FORIEGN MINISTER

Posted: Monday, June 16, 2008 2:22 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
FLINT, Mich. — Obama reiterated his commitment to withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq during a telephone conversation this morning with the country’s foreign minister, he told reporters in a 10-minute press conference on the tarmac here.

The presumptive Democratic nominee told Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari that he looked forward to seeing him in Baghdad and told reporters he also wanted to visit Afghanistan, saying the situation there continued to deteriorate — noting a prison break this past weekend. He declined to specify when such trips would take place, but said he would like to go before the election.

VIDEO: NBC’s Richard Engel, author of “War Journal: My Five Years in Iraq” joins the “Morning Joe” team to discuss the progress of the war.

The men spoke about the progress U.S. troops have made in helping to reduce the violence in Iraq but Obama told Zebari troop withdrawals must go forward.

“I emphasized to him how encouraged I was by the reductions in violence in Iraq, but also insisted that it is important for us to begin the process of withdrawing U.S. troops, making clear that we have no interest in permanent bases in Iraq,” the senator said. “I gave him an assurance that should we be elected, an Obama administration will make sure that we continue with the progress that’s been made in Iraq, that we won’t act precipitously, but that we will move to end U.S. combat forces in Iraq in a manner that’s as careful as we were careless getting in.”

The need to withdraw is twofold, Obama said. Reprising an argument he has been making for months, he cited the need to encourage the Iraqi government to make the political accommodations on matters like oil revenues and provincial elections, which the surge was supposed to help happen. He argued that the progress made in the South and in Sadr City showed the need not for a longer commitment but a shorter one, because they indicate a greater capacity on the part of Iraqis to deal effectively with their security. Obama said the second reason was the $10- to-12 billion being spent each month in the country, a statistic he often cites when discussing the need to withdraw.

In response to a question about how much flexibility there would be to withdrawal plans, Obama said he still believed U.S. forces could be out of the country within about 16 months and that “I’ve also consistently said that I will consult with military commanders on the ground and that we will always be open to the possibility of tactical adjustments. The important thing is to send a clear signal to the Iraqi people and most importantly to the Iraqi leadership that the U.S. occupation in Iraq is finite, it is gonna be coming to a foreseeable end.”

He said he told Zebari that negotiations for a Status of Forces agreement or strategic framework agreement between the two countries should be done in the open and with Congress’s authorization and that it was important that that there be strong bipartisan support for any agreement so that it can be sustained through a future administration. He argued it would make sense to hold off on such negotiations until the next administration.

“My concern is that the Bush administration–in a weakened state politically–ends up trying to rush an agreement that in some ways might be binding to the next administration, whether it was my administration or Sen. McCain’s administration,” Obama said. “The foreign minister agreed that the next administration should not be bound by an agreement that’s currently made.”

And again Here is todays report from NYPost for Comparison!!!!

WHILE campaigning in public for a speedy withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama has tried in private to persuade Iraqi leaders to delay an agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence.

According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

“He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington,” Zebari said in an interview.

Obama insisted that Congress should be involved in negotiations on the status of US troops – and that it was in the interests of both sides not to have an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in its “state of weakness and political confusion.”

“However, as an Iraqi, I prefer to have a security agreement that regulates the activities of foreign troops, rather than keeping the matter open.” Zebari says.

Though Obama claims the US presence is “illegal,” he suddenly remembered that Americans troops were in Iraq within the legal framework of a UN mandate. His advice was that, rather than reach an accord with the “weakened Bush administration,” Iraq should seek an extension of the UN mandate.

While in Iraq, Obama also tried to persuade the US commanders, including Gen. David Petraeus, to suggest a “realistic withdrawal date.” They declined.

I am a North Carolinian and happen to be an African American female–strongly supported Hillary Clinton. Never ever though about voting for Obama and his paper thin record. What I have not seen in the bloggers’ comments here is the race by Harvey Gnatt (a well deserving and highly qualified African American)who ran for the Senate against Jesse Helms. It was not pretty and very unsightly. In this state, that I love dearly since adopting it more than 20 years ago, it is hard to imagine Obama pulling off a win here. No Democrat since Jimmy Carter has done this. We say that Jesse Helms is like Elvis, but unlike Elvis who probably is only “sighted” on his birthday, Jesse lives every day in this state.

Charlotte is the home of one of our representatives who supports Obama. The state also has another congressional leader supporting him. There are others, but I was amazed at what the 2 of these had to say after McCain announced Palin as a running mate. Quotes in the News and Observer: Mel Watts/Charlotte: “I don’t know what to make of it. I never heard of her before.” This make me think that Mr. Watts knows the names and/or recognize the names of the other 49 governors.

G. K. Butterfield: “I can’t even pronounce her last name.” This is embarrassing because the letter sounds in Palin’s name should have been learned in his early schooling and if he can’t pronounce this name/word, it scares me to know that we have a leader in Congress (representing my district) who is reading documents and legalese that far more difficult to pronounce carrying on our government.

So bottom line: Obama can play the race card, but I do believe Helms has left some lieutenants here who will fight back hard and fierce

I a resident of Chicago who supported Hillary because of her ,just being the smartest person and voice I heard. BO is a empty suit and a well packaged marketing tool of Dean. If we will carefully look into what really happened with the DNC we will find the fight of ego’s. The DNC vs the DLC or Clinton vs Dean. The 50 state dream vs reality. Hang in there we will be vindicated on November 5th.

Its worse than I thought. Just caught fox news. McCains message today was “economy fundamentally strong” WTF !!!!!!!

So Obama spends the day SLAMMING McCain, and McCain responds by saying the economy is fundamentally strong.

Maybe McCain is senile, and no I am not a troll, but I am sick of this campaign McCain is running. He has no clue. He wont attack the messiah, but he has no problem making stupid statements.

The only smart thing McCain campaign has done is pick Palin, and McCain did that against his will, he wanted Lieberman.

McCain is just too old, he doesnt have the fight in him anymore, and just cant help but saying stupid things.

This could be a landslide for Obama. Even FOX news is starting to turn against McCain. As unacceptable as Obama is, McCain just doesnt have a clue how to run a campaign.

If this was Bush/Cheney/Rove I GUARANTEEE we would have heard about Rezko, Ayers and Rev Wright long ago. Bush won in 2000 and 2004 in elections he had no business winning by going midevil on Gore and Kerry, and now we are stuck with McCain aka Mary Poppins

First of all, the ageism in your comments is striking.

Secondly, I think McCain has done a decent job today. I don’t like fearmongering. There’s no need to cause more panic on Wall Street just for political purposes.

Obama wants to pander to our fears and promise a depression if we won’t vote for him. Do you honestly think it helps the country to repeat this meme? Part of what keeps the economy afloat is our confidence in it.

McCain knows what he’s doing. Calm down.

Comment by Perry Logan | 2008-09-16 12:40:21

I see McCain as a Herbert Hoover figure–doing pretty much nothing while the country implodes from eight years of Republican screw-ups. This is a best-case scenario, you understand..

Comment by Beowulf | 2008-09-16 12:57:53

For me, it’s easy to predict how Biden would govern as Prez: a proactive Bill Clinton “New Democrat”, who pragmatically believes in both a strong government (regulation, welfare state) and a strong private sector.

But it is a bit tricky when it comes to Obama, McCain and Palin. The later three are all playing bait-n-switch: Obama’s record is that of a flaming liberal and McCain and Palin’s is that of rightwingers. Indeed, Palin’s record is that of a rightwing wacko. They are not the moderates they pretend to be.

That being said, both McCain and Palin can (somewhat) rightfully claim to have been reformers. But then again, Washington has a way of corrupting you: Bush43 was a moderate in Texas who then morphed into a rightwing neocon in the White House. Bush43’s father, Bush41, was anti “trickle down economics” and undeclared w.r.t. the abortion issue, but as a prez, he toed the line as all good little boys should.

But this is ideology. I also can’t say for sure how the three would respectively turn out in terms of competence and the ability to lead, particularly in times of crisis.

Just keep in mind that while ageism is not a good thing, it is nowhere as bad as sexism and racism.

After all, all old people were once young and all young people will grow old. A black person can’t turn white, nor a woman turn into a man–not that they should want to.

Nice try. Obama doesn’t know anything about economics and has been taking contributions from Fannie/Freddie to the tune of being their second or third highest recipient. He has also had two of their former gurus (Raines and Johnson) on his staff. He can just as easily get egg on his face because he has no real record of cleaning anything up in Chicago and his backers always get rich. Get a clue and do a little research. Start with looking up Emil Jones, Valerie Jarrett and Allison Davis. Add search terms like ‘Grove Parc,’ ‘Woods Fund,” “The Habitat Company, LLC”. That is just a start. everyone was distracted by Rezko and Ayers and there are a whole lot of other skeletons in his closet. How about Acorn?

Read ‘Barack Obama and Me’ to get oriented:

Comment by Jules | 2008-09-15 23:07:51

If you heard McCain’s whole speech start to finish, and in context, his comment didn’t sound that bad, but I knew they would take bad soundbites from it. He wasn’t saying the whole economy is great…he was saying the fundamentals are strong. By fundamentals he said he meant the American workers and America’s entrepreneurial spirit. However, I knew the minute he said something at all positive about the economy that it would end up in an Obama ad.

As far as Fox goes, I think they made some sort of deal to get better access to Obama. I did read that they had a ‘meeting’ before he agreed to be on O’Reilly. They told him they would be fair but wouldn’t be ‘in the tank’ for him. I think they really want to be seen as ‘fair and balanced’ and people normally think of them as a conservative network.

I also read that, historically, the candidate running on fear and pessimism about the economy generally loses. Maybe McCain is sticking using this idea.

I personally would be more entertained by a fast-paced dogfight (figuratively speaking of course), but I think things will happen in due time. It has been reported that some of Rove’s ‘trainees’ are involved in the McCain campaign somehow.

I’ve been doing some research into Obama’s tax program and have trimmed it down to these basic facts:

1- If you got a tax break under the Bush tax reform act from a few years ago…it’s gone, your taxes will go up.

2- bottom 40% of all Americans pay no federal taxes, that’s zero, nil, nada!

3- Top 5% of all Americans that pay federal taxes pay 60% of all income tax revenues received by the feds.

4- Under the Obama tax plan the 40% that pay no taxes will get a check for up to $1000.

5- Those earning $250,000 or less and have to pay federal income tax will get a tax credit up to $1000 to be applied toward their current year income tax bill.

6- The top 5% get nothing.

7- Obama says everyone under %250,000 will get a cut in their taxes, but there is no “cut” in taxes, actually the tax rate will increase, back to the rates before the Bush tax cut.

8- Capital gains taxes will be increased 10-20% causing a loss in jobs and increases in the cost of goods that we buy.

9- When you give a tax “cut” to almost everyone but increase what it costs to live by more than your “cut” your in negative numbers.

10- Promising almost a trillion dollars in new and expanded programs means that the money has to come from somewhere and the answer is from our pockets.

Conclusion: Obama is lying!

There were at least 5,000 there, there were 3,000 online views and NBC said that he had a small town meeting. I was a resident of NC for many years and still watch the politics there closely. This is astounding news that the Obama campaign will again be using the race card/racebaiting, the standard practice used in his primary campaign. Axelrod apparently felt this disgusting tactic ‘helped’ to elect Duval Patrick, in his MASS governor’s campaign also run by Axelrod. This was pointed out on FoxNews by Geraldine Ferraro.

The NC dem primary is nothing compared to the ge. The republican onslaught will be stunning. 40% of the primary voters were A-A with them voting 91% for Obama. The other 16% of Obama’s vote on May 6th was the young professionals and college student demographics in the Raleigh-Durham area of the state. The campaign will not be able to count on more help than that in the ge that will bring out the substantial other side.

But that’s ok. Don’t tell them they are wasting their money there.

I was just thinking, after reading M.O.s rant, it is so totally sad how America is going to be divided after (hopefully) Obama leaves the scene.
I am a European woman married to an African American man.
So this whole “we” and “them” thing was quite new to me when I moved here 3 years ago.
I have personally felt more subtle racism from blacks, but we think it is natural since I am white. And my husband has reverse experiences.
He was a Hillary guy.
He did never like Obama, who reminds him of those Nation of Islam types.
but, He is a Democrat and will vote accordingly.
I think it is so sad that the first black Nominee for POTUS is such a fraud. Zero experience, cheated his way through the caucuses, playing the race card, his roots in the Chicago Style politics.
I think the black people of America deserve better than that.
What a shame.
(also I cannot identify him as a repersentative of Black America, he was born and raised in a white family and the black part of him is not a desendent from slaves – even there he is a fraud)

I watched McCain’s Townhall this am on Fox. McCain talked about the fundamental strength of America’s work force—workers who are skilled, the most productive in the world, innovative—the core of our economic strength and he said this fundamental is strong and resilient but is being threatened by the greed and failures of Wall St. and Washington. He said Wall St. was running the financial markets like a casino and it must be stopped and he would do so. Please take a look at his economic ad on economics. Also on this site Charles Lemos has organized a series of McCain positions on the economy so you can see that he does in fact have a strong economic plan. McCain’s plan sees something you will not see in Obama’s plan and that is the tie in over time between energy independence and middle class jobs and well being.

Why do some African-Americans insist on playing the race card at every given opportunity? You look at these Asian immigrants who come here with nothing and yet they achieve more economically than some of the AAs who relish employing the race/ victim card into government gimmes.

I’m partly of Asian descent, and if anything Asian-Americans have been reverse-discriminated against in terms of college admissions, as top tier universities strive to achieve racial equity i.e. affirmative action for African-Americans. But you don’t see Asian-Americans protesting about how unfair this all is. No, instead of whining and hating America, they just work even harder. It pisses me off that Michelle Obama, rather than being grateful for her education, continue to play the victim role even as she climbs the corporate ladder.

What message does that send to poor and middle-class AAs? That they’re always victims no matter how successful they are in society. What a sick mentality this is. Hopefully the race-baiting won’t work in NC as people with common sense, Black or White, wake up to this divisive tactic.

All his camp can do is try to beat the urban bushes for every whino and felon who either hasn’t been interested in voting or doesn’t think he’s eligible. The laws on the latter vary by state, and I’m sure Bobo’s minions will be pulling out all the stops to legally and illegally get these folks signed up. Whether the O-bots will be willing to load them up on election day and point them toward the polls is another matter. The biggest outcome of the vote-for-Barack-or-you-re-a-racist spiel is that it will backfire big-time. People who ARE racists don’t care!! They’ll be out on election day with bells on and will dance on Bobo’s political grave that night! Comment by Beowulf | 2008-09-15 19:29:10

WHOA! Lets becareful here…

I don’t see anything wrong with Obama-Biden playing the race-card in a strictly POSITIVE way, such as “Yes, We Can!”

Now, “Yes, We Can!” is obviously code to African Americans that “They’re trying to keep us down, but: Yes, We Can!” In many respects, African Americans are still an oppressed minority, as as clearly recorded year after year in the criminal-justice data, socio-economic data, etc.

By the same token, I don’t see anything wrong with Hillary talking about the “glass ceiling”, or for that matter Sarah Palin talking about it. The data on violence against women and the socio-economic data on the wage gap is proof positive women are oppressed.

As long as it is POSITIVE, and NOT scurrilous, then it is okay to talk about civil rights, be it for minorities or for women.

Of course, during the primaries, Obama was playing both a very positive racial angle as well the most vicious race-baiting (and gender-baiting, character assassination, etc.) Against McCain-Palin, he has been practicing some scurrilous race-baiting (”By the way, did I mention he’s black?”) and gender-baiting (”Lipstick on a pig”).

Knowing Obama, I’m pretty sure he’s been playing a lot of nefarious race-baiting behind-the-scenes and under-the-radar. But if you think the GOP isn’t doing the same, then you’re totally naive. A fucking pox on both their houses for playing dirty.

We PUMA’s have got to be fair here. No fucking cherry-picking, PLEASE!

Hillary, Bill, Geraldine, and Ed Rendell, on the other hand, NEVER fraudulently played the race-card nor the gender card. Even Rachel “Bros before Ho’s” Maddow said she wished that Hillary would have played up the civil rights for women angle more. Although I agree with this assessment in general, Maddows is totally naive: The GOP and the corporate media would have immediately slammed her for even for legitimately playing the gender card, for playing victim, for being a lyin’ bitch. This is exactly what they did to her when she finally brought up the issue of sexism. In fact, that degenerate tin horn Chris “shivers up my leg” Matthews immediately said she was “playing the gender card” when she first brought it up. Matthews, Olbermann, Maddow, and the rest of the corporate media whores, were constantly piling-on using the rapist defense aginst Hillary: “The BITCH brought it on herself!” Truly ironic in Olbermann’s and Maddow’s case since both are true flaming liberals.

If we slam Obama for positively playing up the race angle, then we must do likewise for Hillary and Palin positively playing up the gender angle.

Of course, if and when Barack “typical white person” Obama, Michelle “For the first time in my life…” Obama, David “Mike Nifong” Axelrod, etc., scurrilously play the race-card, then I’ll be the first to say: FUCK THEM!

Comment by Maverick | 2008-09-15 19:51:30

Douchebag,

Not all PUMA’s are pro McCain or pro Palin. Many are staying home. Some are voting for Nader. Many, like myself, are voting for McCain-Palin only because we want to defeat Obama.

And what the fuck is wrong with you?!? Palin has cited and even thanked Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary. The McCain-Palin campaign has (rightfully) trashed Obama over his deliberate sexist “Lipstick on a Pig” comment. Palin has explicitly invoked the “glass ceiling” and the “good ol’ boys club”, which means the same things as Obama’s (or rather Cesar Chavez’s) “Yes, we can!”, i.e. “The Man is keeping us down!” They constantly talk about how Obama should have picked Hillary as VP. Of course they are playing the gender angle–the gender card.

Repeat: What the FUCK is wrong with you?!?

Comment by John House | 2008-09-16 07:46:52

What the fuck is wrong with YOU when YOU don’t realize that “playing the race card” is an inherently negative act in of itself? Seems to me that you don’t fucking read, and haven’t a clue what playing the race card means. I suggest you pick up some McWhorter or Thompson Ford and READ what black intellectuals have to say about the race card.

Comment by Beowulf | 2008-09-16 12:30:52

Hey dumbfuck,

Not if you’re being oppressed:

1. Criminal-justice data taken year after year shows blacks are racially profiled buy cops, US customs, department store employees, etc. With the case of US customs, blacks are less likely to try to smuggle in contraband, but are 8-9 times more likely to be searched. Combine this with non-verbal “microinsults” done by the “typical white person”, and you have a pretty sure-fine way of destroying a persons self-image creating alienation, etc. Alienation is the seed from which criminal behavior arises. This is well known to criminologists: ALL RACES & ALL CULTURES ARE HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO ITS INSIDIOUS, INDEED DESTRUCTIVE AND SELF-DESTRUCTIVE, EFFECTS. There’s a mountain of sociological and economic data going back 150+ years that says precisely this. And it is hardly unique to the US. Hint: Look into all those ethnic gangs of the past, namely the English, German, Irish, Italians, Jews, Chinese, etc., and compare them to the gangs of today, i.e. the Bloods & Crypts, MS-13 and even those white biker gangs, neo-Nazi’s, etc.

2. Socio-economic data shows year after year that it is easier for a white guy with a criminal record to get the same job than a black guy with NO criminal record. Everyone knows that crime and unemployment go hand in hand.

3. 1/3 of all women will be sexually in their lifetime, in the US.

4. Men kill women. By comparison, it is very rare for the opposite case to occur.

5. Women make 77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work.

And btw, what the FUCK you think Hillary’s (sincere) reference to “the glass ceiling” and Palin’s (opportunistic) echo it of it means? What the FUCK do you think Palin’s (insincere) reference to “the good ol’ boys club” means?

It means the same Goddam thing as “Yes, we can!”: The Man is keeping us down!

THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH POSITIVELY PLAYING UP THE GENDER ANGLE. LIKEWISE, THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH PLAYING UP THE RACE ANGLE. IT IS ONLY WRONG IF OBAMA FALSELY ACCUSES HIS OPPONENTS OF SAYING SOMETHING RACIST–i.e. PLAYING THE RACE CARD.

You’re a real ignorant dumbfuck. You do know that, right?
