Hollywood Blowhards

webhollywood_edited-2.jpg

I love Hollywood movies just like most everyone else. Give me a comfortable stadium seat, a good thriller, a bag of fresh popcorn, and a cold Pepsi, and I am as happy as a hog in warm poop.

But I don’t go to the stars, even my favorite ones, for factual information about any candidate or political position. Every time I hear one mouthing off about politics, I strip away who they are and pretend instead that they are the neighbor next door who watches Keith Olbermann and figures she now knows everything.

The difference is that my neighbor has no bully pulpit. But our Hollywood celebrities get their faces and words out there in the bright lights, and the media eats it all up. Their ignorance metastasizes in an instant.

My latest beef is with Matt Damon, one of the shinier stars and normally among my favorites. He played the part of a genius in (and even co-wrote) Good Will Hunting, but his real-life fact-generating skills are far less impressive.

Damon is trying to scare everyone by suggesting that John McCain would be fairly likely to die while in office—a one in three chance. To “prove his point” he totally misrepresents the actuarial data (probably because he cannot read a percentage chart—if you pretend to be dumb, you can see how he came up with this figure).

First, let’s be clear about mortality actuarial tables. They are used to predict risk, using probability statistics, and the figures do not represent only healthy people. So by the time one gets to 70, some have taken very poor care of themselves and others are chronically ill. John McCain has had bouts with melanoma in the past, but he is under the best doctor’s care and would continue to be were he to be elected President. His dreadful years in a Viet Nam prison brought on lifetime physical consequences, but none seem to have left life-threatening sequela. His mother is alive and well into her 90s. He is married, financially strong, and churchgoing, all of which are positively correlated to longevity. And also remember, the older you get the more years you likely have yet to live. (You get extra credit for living longer.)

Using straight actuarial mortality tables (based on general population trends), McCain has an average of little over a 3% chance of dying each year if in office, starting at age 72. At his current age, McCain’s life expectancy is 12 more years. See exact figures here (and you probably won’t be able to resist checking out yourself).

So, Matt, next time you spout off, get your facts straight!

P.S. Did you see the Emmys last night? Again, more ageism aganist McCain. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, especially, did a crude prune thing. I guess it is OK in this cycle to make sexist and ageist jokes and crude commentary, but heaven forbid you get close to race!

Comment by Leisa | 2008-09-22 21:14:15

Yes, I think wise actors are quiet about who they support. I think that using a celebrity to promote a politician should have limits, same as limit to campaign contributions. Actors get paid to sell ideas and products for a living, and the more famous they are, the more money that endorsement is worth.

The plugs for Obama during the Emmys were disgraceful. I am glad the ratings were so low.

Americans are getting tired of these self-important elites that are disconnected from our everyday realities telling us who we are and what we should do.

I do agree–the Hollywood types who stay out of it have the most sense. I admire them when the use their celebrity for good causes, charity, etc. But their political opinions mean nothing to me.

Of course, I’m so over this celebrity culture we’ve developed in the U.S.

Comment by Linda | 2008-09-22 21:16:02

yes, I was going to gleefully say the same thing.

Reports that they only had 12 million viewers. Down 12 percent from last years already lowest numbers.

I think lastnight was the last televised Emmy’s. All that expense for their own entertainment. LOL

Nobody saw the Emmys, obviously.

1. Let’s go to stats. That is my area. John McCain’s mother is over 90. The points around any longevity study center first on family history. She is alive 20 years past his presidency.

2. I am liking this Sarah Palin person. She could be the Jack Kennedy of the republican party. Young, fresh and opinionated.

3. I saw the ads. Not really good, but they will work. Once the NRA gets finished with OH, PA, NC and VA Obama is toast. We eat deer meat because a 34 cent bullet is cheaper than two thousand dollars in store bought steak.

I am not ready to let the Hollywood kids tell us it is over for McCain/Palin.

We like the Moose Mama!

I guess it is OK in this cycle to make sexist and ageist jokes and crude commentary, but heaven forbid you get close to race!

Sexist and agesist jokes directed at a white person is acceptable but not at a black since it would always be traced to race, compliments of a screwed up media.

Young and vigorous Heath Ledger recently died.

Hollywood is littered with the the death sites of the young, where they do drugs and wake up in alleys like Oblowme.

I haven’t ever liked Matt Damon.

He ruined The Good Shepherd.

He has zero sex appeal. Even Ben Affleck is a better actor.

Matt Damon’s comments prove that he is Clueless. And he would have sucked in that too.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-09-22 22:34:22

I thought Damon was SUPERB in The Good Shepherd.

And that’s my stomping grounds, my heritage, those neighborhoods, so I have a basis to pass judgment.

I think Damon is one of the finest actors of his era, too. The guy is GOOD–one of the best to come along in many, many years.

That said, I think Kelsey Grammar, a diehard Republican, was positively BRILLIANT as Frazier Crane on the small screen. NO ONE could have done a better job in that role. He still makes me laugh, even in reruns.

I wouldn’t tap either one of them for political guidance, though.

They’re fucking ACTORS.

I would no more assign any great weight to what they say about politics than I would take, say, MEDICAL ADVICE, legal recommendations, or financial guidance from them.

They’ve a right to their opinions. This is America and we are all free to speak. They’ve even a right to abuse their unusual access to the bully pulpit, if they’d like.

I’ve a right to dismiss their blathering, which I have NO TROUBLE doing..while I still enjoy their work…as ACTORS.

There’s a saying that applies here: CONSIDER THE SOURCE.

I’ll leave it at that.

I don’t like Matt Damon either. I don’t think he’s that great of an actor, but then I watch mostly British drama/mystery, where the actors look like ordinary people and actually can act.

I’m voting for McCain, but your mention of a prune makes me wonder what exactly they said. I am guilty myself of referring to Reagan as Ronnybaby Raisinhead for years, but that wasn’t on television, at least, and I was a juvenile. So I may have to cut them a little slack on jokes as long as McCain wasn’t the only guy they joked about.

Comment by Tricia Spiegel | 2008-09-23 10:19:24

McCain was the only one they joked about. Obama was hyped (once even subliminally). But I am glad also to learn that the ratings were low. My husband left the room (bored) and I stuck through it to the end but had that “wasted my time” feeling at the end.

Matt Damon “co-wrote good will hunting?”

Actually there was a big broohaha at the time that Damon and that other twit had actually taken credit for a script written by other people.

Now having seen the depth of Damon and that other twit’s intelligence, tell me.. do you think them capable of writing a script?

Granted it was a pretty stupid movie filled with cliches from the past 40 years.

But still..

Also fitting is the fact that Damon and that other twit’s lord and master is the king (and now biden, the prince) of plagarism– one just wonders if like doesn’t attract like.

Age in Hollywood is a terminal condition for actresses. It seems like the age jokes were made by men–who tend to have longer careers.

Even IF McCain were to die in office, Palin already had more managerial experience than Oblahma and I trust her intentions more than his. Once she gets a little more time in the beltway she’s going to be ferocious with those pork-barrel projects and publicly blasting the backers (and probably their connections).

As far as McCain’s age–he’s garnered wisdom, decorum and experience obviously lacking with the bird-flipping Obama. He’s obviously pretty healthy at his age and, my gosh, my folks are in their mid-80s and my mom could run this country better than Obama!

Comment by DAB | 2008-09-23 06:22:04

I used to love Stewart and Colbert but seldom watch them anymore — frankly, there’s not much left to watch on TV so I use it mostly for movies.

Yes, good Ole Matt is now a physician. I don’t know when they switched to an English major being qualified to give a medical diagnosis, but I guess this is the new education system we’re now promoting in colleges around this country.

Apparently, Obama supporters seem to think he’s qualified. I hear them quoting him as if he’s an authority on the topic. If I went to a doctor and saw they had went to college and studied English, didn’t even have a degree in it. I think I’d run as fast as I could back out the door. Thank you, but um mm No Thank You. I’ll go see Dr. Mom at least I know she’s not out to kill me by pretending to have qualifications in the medical field.

Biden in an interview tonight with Katie Couric said that the obama ad saying mac cannot type was “absolutly terrible” and he would have tried to stop it.
He also said that when the stock market collapsed and caused the great depression roosevelt got right on tv to talk to america.
The problem with that though is, Hoover was president and tv had not been created for 15 years.
Biden is the gift that keeps on giving.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-09-22 21:06:25

Yes, thanks Senator Biden. I’m so glad Roosevelt gave those “fireside chats” on the non-existent TV’s people had.

PS. Is Biden saying he’s being kept out of the loop during this campaign? Are they doing the “mushroom” thing with him? Inquiring minds need to know.

Comment by xax | 2008-09-22 21:43:22

Biden is trying to secretly destroy Obama. I KNOW IT!!

Seriously, no one can be this stupid. Maybe they are keeping him out of the loop. It seems like they just send him off somewhere random hoping that no one finds him. He’s probably pissed.

Are any of Biden’s events strategic? They probably pick random coordinates within the US and send his palne there. I wonder how many times he’s gotten out and was greeted by nothing. I bet you he got sent to Canada by mistake. Sorry. Technical glitch!

HAHAHAHAHAHA

OMG what a moron. That’s a double gaffe.

Comment by Jaycephus | 2008-09-23 00:58:47

Double? That’s a triple! You don’t bring up your own previous gaffes, or if confronted directly (did Couric actually ask about the email attack ad? I’m shocked if so.) you downplay, and if appropriate, apologize as succinctly as possible. But you shouldn’t say your own boss’ ad was ‘absolutely terrible’, and imply that your boss’ judgment (Obama approved the message) was so flawed that you, as VP candidate, would have ’stopped’ it. It comes out as if he is distancing himself from Obama’s horrendous action!

The FDR and TV thing is just priceless beyond measure. It’s like an SNL parody, but funnier.

I’ve said it before: Biden is out-Quayling Dan Quayle!

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-09-23 01:31:22

Paul, about the TV, you’re a bit off. Television (to the extent that we would recognize it today) was invented in the mid 1920s and the first public broadcasting (in the US) was made in 1931 with commercial licenses first issued in 1941.
TV sets were available in not only the US but also Britain, Germany and France as early as the mid 1930s–in the US, the cheapest sets available with 3″ screens cost $125 (in today’s dollars, more than $1800) while the cheapest 12″ screens cost about $450 (in today’s dollars, more than $6500). It wasn’t until after WWII that prices came down enough for the medium to be widely available (in 1946, roughly 0.5% of US households had a set; by 1954, more than 55% of US households did; by 1962, that percentage was up to 90%–from only 1 of every 200 households in 1946 to 9 out of 10 in 1962).

Comment by Linda Mac | 2008-09-22 20:56:00

I agree with you totally. I will have to admit that I love being closer to McCain’s age than to Obama’s. Being a young woman in the 50s meant that I never went out of the house without makeup and a perfect hairdo and outfit. It is wonderful to be old enough not to have to worry about appearance and to just be joyful about having such good health.

I have a friend whose daughter (23-years-old) is currently in critical condition with an annurisym (sp?) so being young does not guarantee perfect health or a long life. McCain could outlive us all.

Comment by missE | 2008-09-22 21:01:16

Running for office has got to be one of the most exhausting experiences one could have.

The only one who has been looking haggard is Obama.

In regards to Damon’s fear that Palin is inexperienced
on foreign policy, she will not be VP until the end of January and has plenty of time to get up to speed.

Comment by ipotter | 2008-09-22 21:19:48

You’re absolutely right. Gotta wonder about bo’s health. He seems to need a lot of vacation time. Good thing he is applying for the job with the most vacation time in the entire country (Bush showed us that in his first year or two in office.) And bo never did release his medical files like McCain did. All he showed was one slip of paper saying all was good… hummm Well could be true, nonetheless, I’d like to see the entire file, along with his state senate records, college records, birth certificate that isn’t a forgery, and the rest of those musty ol’ papers.

Comment by csuzeq | 2008-09-22 21:32:19

I think experience is the gage to long life. The more hard things you go through, the stronger person you are. You are more of a fighter. McCain learned survival skills and what is important to get bent out of shape for and what to shrug off.

Barrakula, on the other hand has no guage for what is struggle. You can see how this contest is wearing him out. He’ll have a heart attack yet. I wish someone would give him a little celebratory coke to help speed up that process.

Age discrimination is not nearly as prevalent as racism against Blacks and other minorities. It’s just a fact. We had, in California, an unfortunate event that in the race for governor proved to be surprising: The Bradley effect.

Tom Bradley, former mayor of Los Angeles, was ahead in the polls; but when the election happened, Bradley lost big time.

It’s unfortunate, but this kind of discrimination is more prevalent than age discrimination. As the public was fascinated with Ronald Reagan, so are they with McCain and the public is wild about Palin — this past Saturday drawing, in Florida, over 60,000 supporters.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-09-22 21:18:56

Really? Do tell. I bet racism was even more rampant during MLK’s time. He never used it as an excuse to be mean, hateful, or discriminatory toward any other group or persons.

I remember the Bradley years in CA. There was criticism from the black community as well. But let’s not talk about that.

Comment by Ferd McBerfle | 2008-09-22 21:38:52

You are so far off base, I won’t even bother responding to your claptrap.

Comment by Tricia Spiegel | 2008-09-22 21:49:41

Actually, age discrimination is much worse in certain ways–getting a decent job for one. Amost nothing available unless a senior has a unique and needed skill.

Also, in increasing numbers of areas, seniors will not be able to have a primary care physician because because they will not see Medicare patients.

Comment by JB | 2008-09-22 21:57:42

The Bradley Effect is not about racism, it is about the fear of being thought of as racist.

Comment by Jaycephus | 2008-09-23 01:17:20

JB: ditto.

The Bradley effect is often brought up and associated with ‘racism’, but at heart, it is a fear of being labeled or thought of as being a racist for not supporting a black candidate when asked by a pollster. Later, in the privacy of the voting booth, they pull the lever based on their true feelings. Now unless someone has ESP, there is no way to tell if any of these voters have so much as a racist bone in their body. I suspect not, since most racists could probably not care less what a pollster thinks.

This fear, come to find out, isn’t so surprising based on the articles coming out now that talk about racism being the reason Obama isn’t just crowned already.

My gut feeling is that the Bradley effect is going to be significant in this particular race.

Most of the Hollywood “stars” as they like to call themselves couldn’t light a candle to John McCain’s heroic patriotism or Sarah Palin’s strength and fortitude in times of attack. I would bet more than half of Hollywood is on drugs or alcohol, sleeps around, neglects their kids, has more greed than Wall Street, and are egotistical and/or arrogant (except of course when they get a serious illness- then they are big donators to charity). Many in Hollywood are a sham compared to someone who gave up 5 years of his life for his country and in my view have one hell of a nerve criticizing John MCCain. Many are a disgrace to America. Big deal they can act. Only shows they are great at lying and were blessed with good looks genes. If it weren’t for people like McCain fighting for their freedom and rights to produce violent and pornographic movies, they would be looking for other careers. They are no better than any other Americans but act like somehow they know better.

Comment by AX10 | 2008-09-22 21:15:42

Hollywood is worse than Wall Street in one
respect. That is that Hollywood pretends to

Wall Street openly believes in greed.

OK I get it. From the Damon/Obot/Ohitler perspective:

Being a racist is bad thing unless you are Ohitler (who attended a racist church and had a racist mentor for 20 years) or one of his race baiting surrogates. Then its OK to be a bloody racist.

Racism is bad if the Obots falsly claim it, even thought falsly making claims of racism (race baiting) makes them the actual racists.

Sexism, mysoginy and ageism is OK.

Wouldn’t worry about the surge. Happens every time he gets behind. After the FISA vote, he was on the upswing even while his supporters were still venting their disgust with him… polls are funny things, especially when the obot factor is figured in. What I worry about is the voter fraud. Fake polls can be used to substantiate fake votes, IMHO.

I agree, Pat. I think this overblown attention to McCain’s age is sheer lunacy from a group where youth and beauty and superficial glam is everything.

McCain is like the Energizer Bunny. I’ve read how “tired and worn out and weary” the One has been over the course of the primary and general.

Does anyone recall reading similar statements about John McCain? The guy won’t quit. Even when the so-called pundits told him it was over, done, nada. He kept going.

And if we need a blood relative to look at. Look at his mother, for God’s sake. What 96 years old? And fiesty as hell. I should look that good at that age. I should live that long!

I listened to the 60 minutes interview last night. McCain said there were many times that would have predicted his early demise, that he was the luckiest man the interviewer would ever likely meet. And that he was eternally grateful for that.

I’m grateful, too. In this perfect storm, he is “the” candidate for this particular moment in history.

And trust me, as a lifelong Dem this is truly a remarkable statement.

Good essay. Thank you.

Matt Damon

Lindsay Lohan

Barbara Streisand

Howie Mandel

Bill Maher

Chevy Chase

Tina Fey

Unlike Damon, at least she still has talent
and a career.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-09-22 22:54:20

These efforts at boycotts are silly..and frankly, a bit CREEPY. Ignore the opinions of these performers if you don’t like them.

I think Dennis Miller is a shitty comedian–THAT’s why I don’t patronize any of his performances, NOT because of his political views.

I think Tina Fey is a real talent. So’s Streisand. So’s Damon. So’s Chevy. Bill Maher is a smug misogynist, but on the bright side, he’s always backed the wrong horse. His show is an interesting forum, even if he’s a bit of a self-centered blowhard.

I don’t pick my doctor based on their political views, nor do I pick my lawyer on that basis. I go for COMPETENCE in their assigned fields. I don’t pick the actors whose performances I’ll attend based on their fucking POLITICS, either–that’s the kind of shit they used to do in the old USSR–it’s what they do in the PRC and North Korea. It’s “political correctness” run amok, and it’s un-American, in my opinion.

A good actor is a good actor. A good singer is a good singer. I never worried about Luciano Pavarotti’s politics while I enjoyed him belting out NESSUN DORMA. And I wouldn’t care if he agreed with me, or not….I’d simply take the good, his musical artistry….and leave the rest.

If you don’t like their political views, the channel changing button on the remote works a treat to avoid having to listen to political claptrap from …. ENTERTAINERS.

Comment by Danny | 2008-09-23 04:05:14

That sounds good at first, but be careful– next thing you know, you’ll be choosing your politicians based on their policies, instead of who they hang out with or who they offended (the noquarter-approved method).

Comment by John House | 2008-09-23 02:19:18

Tina fey wrote into 30 Rock that there was an 80% chance she would tell her friends she was voting for Obama but then vote for McCain; in an interview she said that it was autobiographical. So I wouldn’t write tina Fey off just yet, even though I’m almost positive that she feels obligated to portray Sarah Palin on SNL.

Matt Damon is a lot like Ohitler. Both of them are paid to pretend to be someone else. We know for a fact there are two faces to Ohitler. Sadly the US population tends to idolize actors and politicians they “like” in the same way. Thinking people dismiss what Damon and Ohitler have to say because we know both are totally full of shit. The problem is 3/4 of the US population is brain dead.

Obama’s Questions for the Presidential Debate Leaked (Humor)

Breaking news in the first debate in Mississippi. The questions Jim Lehrer plans to ask Obama have been leaked to the press. Oddly, all the questions have been submitted by Barack Obama’s friends and associates. Here’s the line-up:

1. “Dear Barack, why are you so sexy?” – Barbara Walters

2. “Senator Obama, how do you do the things that you do to me?” – Chris Matthews

3. “Was I black before I was a woman or was I a woman before I was black?” – Oprah Winfrey

4. “Barry, why is there a white woman stealing your show?” – Fr Michael Pfleger

5. “Which costs more? My million dollar mansion or your million dollar mansion?” – Jeremiah Wright

6. “After the election, can my dad finally admit he is your Foreign Policy adviser?” – Mika Brzezinski

7. “If I vote for you, will you abolish slavery?” – Whoopi Goldberg

8. “Is your opponent a war criminal or an “air pirate”?” – Keith Olbermann

9. “Can you calculate how much we’ll get in reparations? If you add it up… If you add it up…” – Louis Farrakhan

10. “If you are elected President, can I bomb the Whitehouse?” – Bill Ayers

11. “Where do you stand on fraud, corruption and political favors?” – Tony Rezko

12. “As first lady, will I have to be proud of this mean country?” – Michelle Obama

13. “Senator Obama, are my lies worse than your lies?” – John Edwards

14. “Why do they attack you so? And when are you coming on my show?” – Chris Wallace

15. “Is it possible you have TOO MUCH experience to be President?” – Anderson Cooper

16. “Were you for the surge before you were against it or against the surge before you were for it?” – John Kerry

17. “Is it racist to falsely accuse someone of racism?” – Bill Clinton

18. “OK, Senator… What IS a community organizer?” – Rudy Giuliani

19. “Did you lose my e-mail address?” – Scarlett Johansson

It’s a cult of celebrity that feeds their egos, and enables them to command huge unwarranted sums of money for such little output. I recognize there is a tremendous amount of skill, hard work and dedication to become a professional actor, and the best should command top dollar as in any profession. However, the one trick ponies should not be able to comfortably retire in their mid-20’s because of one role. These people are famous only for being famous because of the cult of celebrity. Refusing to watch movies and TV is not the answer. Refusing to support the cult of personality, such as People Magazine, E! TV, etc, will dry up funds much quicker. And stop watching award shows, those are nothing more than mutual masturbation fests, each celebrity praising the importance of each other without any outside independent evaluation. It is as if the American Bar Association had lawyers vote on each other… now for best cross examination of a criminal defendant the award goes to … Eventually everyone gets an award under that system. Once people start regarding the acting profession no differently than any other profession, the self importance of egos will accordingly diminish.

Have you noticed that these people who think they are so smart are writing blogs, diaries and making comments all based on the smears and lies being spread about Palin by Camp Obama?

Isn’t that pitiful? ARE THEY THIS DUMB AND NAIVE? Are they just so used to someone handing them a script and reading it, they think the word written is true?

Isn’t that laughable and so sad? All their money and they don’t know they can be taken so advantage of and that they don’t bother to find out the truth?

A good thing we look at them for entertainment purposes only.

Good evening all.

I am LMAO at the ignorance of the following comment by Joe Biden to Katie Couric and for Couric nodding in agreement with it. This is shocking!

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/22/eveningnews/main4470063.shtml

Behind The Scenes With Joe Biden
CBS News Anchor Katie Couric Spends The Day With The Democratic VP Nominee

Sept. 22, 2008

CBS News was with him last Thursday during one of the rockiest weeks in history for the U.S. economy, something that wasn’t lost on the six-term senator.

“Part of what being a leader does is to instill confidence is to demonstrate what he or she knows what they are talking about and to communicating to people … this is how we can fix this,” Biden said. “When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the princes of greed. He said, ‘look, here’s what happened.’”

Hmm, so, according to Joe Biden, when the stock market crashed in 1929, FDR appeared on TV and talked candidly with the American people.

Gee, that sounds so nice, doesn’t it? And Katie Couric just nodded along in agreement with Joe Biden.

But wait! There’s a little problem with what Joe Biden said: Historical Facts

The great Stock Market crash was in October of 1929.

Herbert Hoover was the President then.

FDR was not elected President until November 1932, the first of four terms.

AND furthermore…

I’m pretty sure FDR wasn’t popping up on TV to reassure the American people of anything in 1929, given the fact that it was not until TEN years later, in

(wait for it)

1939 !!!

when FDR became the first President of the United States to

(wait for it)

APPEAR ON TELEVISION !!

LOL!!! My side hurts now!! :)

FDR was at the 1939 Word’s Fair in New York in 1939 and his appearance was broadcast to a handful of TV sets in the New York area by RCA. That was the first time a US President appeared on TV.

Question:

How can Joe Biden get a pass on uttering such ignorance? Did Katie Couric not know what a whopper Joe Biden was telling? Golly!

I am looking for a good link with the video of this whopper by Joe Biden and will post it when I get it.

Love how you Americans equate churchgoing with life longevity. You’re going to have to do something with the other majority chunk of humanity that do not engage in such childish activities and have better life expectancy. Someday you people are going to grow up and realise the earth is round and not everyone (thankfully) is like you.

I prefer the older movies to the newer ones. The Obama zombies remind me of the zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” while Palin reminds me of “Mr. Smith goes to Washington” — even the Obamapukes and the sick media.

On Taylor’s(Obama’s) orders, newspapers and radio(TV) stations in Smith’s (Palin’s) home state(country) refuse to report what Smith(Palin) has to say, and even twist the facts against him(her). An effort by the Boy Rangers (reasonable people) to spread the news results in vicious attacks on the (Palin) children (and herself) by Taylor’s(Obama’s) minions.

Like hell if I will ever pay to see a Matt Damon movie again now.

Comment by hedy | 2008-09-22 22:38:20

I am glad that the Emmy’s bombed. Our country is in such bad shape right now that who cares about these people that live in their own little world and have no clue what the average person goes through we are worried about puting food on the table heating our homes and gas and all they think of is rewarding themselves they have no shame. As for what they think I don’t care but at least give Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin some respect no matter what their views are. Young people watch these shows and they should not be subject to this. Matt Damon has a step daughter and how would he feel if someone talked about her like he has Sarah Palin. Sen.McCain served his country and was a pow did any of them ever serve?

Comment by Babs | 2008-09-22 22:38:45

Hollywood reminds me of high school cliques. So few of these self proclaimed political “experts” have the security of self and a moral compass to do anything but run with the crowd. The funny thing is that they actually think their very important opinions matter to anyone other than the rest of the “experts” in their midst. Sad thing is I have heard that McCain supporters like Jon Voight run the risk of being blackballed in the industry. Maybe these “experts” should stay home and study history before they open their mouths again. They could start with the McCarthy hearings.

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-09-23 01:55:56

Were you one of those who wrote the Dixie Chicks and told them to “shut up and sing”? Or were you one of those who wrote them letters threatening their lives?
The fact is that I could ask you who do you think you are making ANY political comments. You’re a frigging nobody. (There, does that make you feel better? I found it very satisfying.)
The simple fact is this: Barbra Streisand is a CITIZEN of this country and has the First Amendment right to express her political opinion on a forum that accepts it. If she wishes to write an op/ed column for a major newspaper extolling the virtues of Barack Obama and the paper publishes it, then no one has a right to stop the piece and those who don’t wish to read it are not being forced to do so. You do NOT have to agree with her. You do NOT have to like her. But you DO NOT have the right to act like her opinion is of lesser importance than yours. (Dubya and his cronies may think the Constitution is just a “scrap of paper” that has no meaning, but they have not–as yet–completely revoked the right of free expression and free thought.)

Comment by Don S | 2008-09-22 23:45:15

Seems to me that Matt’s distortion of the facts to suggest McCain’s age is a liability is just testimony to the way the Hollywood crowd distorts reality to spin their presentations to fit their political views. There is no certainty that either McCain or Obama will survive four years if they become president. There are many variables that can impact survival including a plane or car crash, a sudden unexpected illness, etc. That McCain is a survivor is hard to deny, given his history as a POW and and medical problems. There is nothing whatever to indicate that he is more likely to die in office than his much younger opponent. It is, however, a legitimate question to consider whether Palin or Biden would be most able to lead the country if they were suddenly elevated to the presidency. That is an issue well worth giving some serious thought. We only have a few days to make up our minds. We know a lot about Biden and his record in the Senate. We are only beginning to get to know Palin. Let’s hope the dirty politicians will not befuddle the voters with lies and distortions about the principals as we head for the polls. Unfortunately, it appears that is not to be expected. Widely publicized unverifiable lies and distortions can heavily influence voters, and the politicians in both camps are very well of it. Expect more crap to hit the fan right up to election day. And expect the Hollywood crowd to do their part in discrediting the people they oppose. And expect the media to publicize every word. “Voter Beware!”

I am always amazed that some people believe that because a famous actor, actress, or comedian says something political that somehow they must know a great deal about politics, the economy, world affairs, or what this country needs. This is like believing that because Bill Maher says there is no God, he must know. Or, being the kind of person that would consider going to someone who plays a doctor on a TV show for a medical opinion and then taking their advice and asking them to perform open heart or brain surgery on you. Or, being the kind of voter who would consider voting for someone for president of the United States just because as an actor they played a US president in a movie or a TV show because you believe that this gave them the experiences necessary to be president. Or, being the kind of voter who believes that someone with no real experience in running a business, a town, or a state is qualified to become president of the United States just because, like most actors, they look right for the part and deliver their written lines so well that they make you believe whatever the writers and directors want you to believe. Are you one of these kinds of people? I am not one of these people and that is why I am not supporting Obama for president.

Damon’s Bourne movie actually patterns a hit put on a Russian journalist who was friends of the poisoned security profile Alexander Litvinenko.

He wrote books about Putin using false flag attacks to gain power, including assassinations and apartment bombings.

October 2006
October 7: The Russian journalist and Kremlin critic Anna Politkovskaya is shot in Moscow.

She was born in New York City to diplomat parents and claimed dual citizenship. Her assassination by gunfire constitutes a terrorist act and the USA appears to have done little in demanding prosecution.

All I think about when I hear these idiots talk that they would have sat in that church, they would have taken that money, they have no integrity, they are idiots.
If they would accept him as President, they would do all those things and more that would ruin this country.

I will no longer put one dollar in any of their pockets. I will no longer watch them, rent them or sit through their movies. I hope they are saving every dime, they will need it if all the McCain supporters use their money as a vote, and “vote” these idiots out of their jobs just like the Super delegates that support Obama should be voted out of theirs.

The average “Hollywood Star” has the same amount of expertise about politics as he/she has expertise about nuclear physics (should that be “nukular”?). I.E., none. Give their opinions all of the attention they deserve – none.

Actors have no place in politics, Ahnold *cough* Ronnie *cough* of Fred *cough* Thompson; neither do athletes *cough* like Kemp.

You’re right.

The Republicans put up a B movie actor for President, and he went on to become the most corrupt President in American history, who led the nation into a massive debt from which it has never recovered. :(

If the life expectancy of mothers are any indicator, I would always go for John McCain. His mother is 96.5 years old and still going strong. I saw her on TV, she looks more like McCain’s younger sister. She is mentally fit and if John has the same life expectancy, he still has more than 20 years in him.

Ann Dunham on the other hand died of cancer at the age of 52. Obama, a “former” smoker and drug abuser, who, if I am not mistaken, has not published his medical records yet, is 47… If he has the same life expectancy as his mother, he is on his last 5 years…

Why don’t we elect Clint Eastwood for President? He has more executive experience than most of the candidates this year. Or Michael Douglas or William Hurt? They played Presidents before. Or Martin Sheen? He did West Wing and was the Prez in SPAWN. No, wait, that was the one on the devil’s payroll…

Playing an athlete, politician or Superhero does not make you such. It is make believe. But that is way too high for some Hollywood celebs to realize.

matt damon parrots george clooney.

clooney came out for obama last year in the rolling stone and other pro obama rags.

clooney is the leader of thehollywood faux rat pack. he doesn’t even live in the usa anymore.

how do you think these guys got where they are today.

they are just willing collaborators in the propaganda machine that is hollywood.

these pretty faces are not the most talented actors in this country. the most talented ones are true artists and still have their souls. you will not find them in hollywood shilling for the cartel .

Good job Pat!
Until these people start playing GOD, maybe they could lay off their prophesies!
Other that their creative portrayals of a SCRIPT produced by another, their input should be kept personal!
Don’t expect it though…delusions of granduer and all that!

McCain hiked the Grand Canyon rim to rim last year…a three day hike down and up. Wonder if Matt Damon has done anything similar.

Matt Damon can act, and he can act like an idiot, which he did with his comment. Why do so many actors think that we’re so star struck that we want to hear their political opinions? I enjoy actors when they do what they do best, which is to entertain. It’s odd that Matt, who believes in “hope,” is so negative as to believe that McCain will probably die within four years.
