What Ben Smith Forgot to Ask About Obama’s Ties to Ayers

Ben Smith is a dishonest, sloppy excuse for a journalist. He accuses the McCain campaign in his posting at Politico of misrepresenting the case against Bill Ayers and is too damn lazy to do rudimentary research. The only one guilty of misrepresentation and lying is Smith. According to Smith:
Schmidt attacked Obama for his ties to William Ayers, who has spoken of his role in 1960s anti-war bombings committed by the Weather Underground.
“What we know for sure, and is beyond debate and argumentation is this: Senator Obama said that William Ayers is a guy that lives in his neighborhood. We know that that is a disingenuous and untruthful answer,” Schmidt said.
“Senator Obama began his political career in its early stages raising money at Ayers’ house,” he said.
Obama did hold a 1995 campaign event at Ayers’ house. It was not, however, a fundraiser, and Ayers did not contribute money to Obama’s first campaign, according to Illinois records.
Let’s ignore for the moment trying to define what is and is not a “fundraiser.” The more important point is what kind of relationship existed between Obama and Ayers. Obama is on the record claiming Ayers is just some guy from the neighborhood. That is a lie. Smith conveniently ignores the fact that 1995 also was the year that Bill Ayers gave Barack Obama his first big job. Stanley Kurtz is out today with an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal. According to Kurtz:
One unsettled question is how Mr. Obama, a former community organizer fresh out of law school, could vault to the top of a new foundation? In response to my questions, the Obama campaign issued a statement saying that Mr. Ayers had nothing to do with Obama’s “recruitment” to the board. The statement says Deborah Leff and Patricia Albjerg Graham (presidents of other foundations) recruited him. Yet the archives show that, along with Ms. Leff and Ms. Graham, Mr. Ayers was one of a working group of five who assembled the initial board in 1994. Mr. Ayers founded CAC and was its guiding spirit. No one would have been appointed the CAC chairman without his approval.
The only problem I have with the Stanley Kurtz piece is that he is still underplaying the critical, instrumental role that William Ayers played in the creation and management of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. How do I know?
For starters I believe what Bill Ayers says about his role. His curriculum vitae contains the following declaration:
Co-Founder and Co-Chair, Chicago School Reform Collaborative (The Annenberg Challenge), 1995-2000
We also have contemporary documentary evidence to substantiate this. According to the Chicago Tribune Sunday edition, 23 October 1994 piece written by Charles Storch and V. Dion Haynes the co-founders explain:
“We don’t want there to be a couple of schools that are shining lights and the rest a mess,” said Anne Hallett, executive director of the Chicago-based Cross City Campaign for Urban School Reform and a longtime force in the local reform movement.
Hallett and William Ayers, an associate professor of education at University of Illinois at Chicago, began the campaign here for an Annenberg grant last December.
Ayers would like to see plans “addressing the huge number of kids in factory-like environments. We need to see creative ways of scheduling kids so they can learn in a smaller (classroom) environment and so teachers can have fewer students.”
The centrality of Ayers and Hallett was reaffirmed in a Chicago Tribune piece dated 23 January 1995, which was also penned by Charles Storch. Storch reported:
Last January, Ayers and Anne Hallett, executive director of the Cross City Campaign for Urban School Reform, began contacting local educators, school-system officials, politicians, foundation executives, teachers union leaders and community activists about the Annenberg Challenge. With Warren Chapman, a program officer for the Joyce Foundation, Ayers and Hallett assembled a group of about 30 people to write a proposal, with 70 more providing counsel.
After months of revisions and meetings with other interested parties, the group submitted its proposal to Annenberg’s advisers in November. The proposal was approved this month.

Ayers and Hallett were not just passive observers in this process. The Chicago Annenberg Challenge was their baby. They played a direct role in the selection of the board to run their brain child. And they did not walk away from this outfit. As Ayers notes in his c.v. he was co-founder and co-chair. In fact, when the Jim Lehrer News Hour sought out someone to talk about the Annenberg Challenge in April 1995 guess who they interviewed? Yep, William Ayers.
On April 19, 1995–ironically the day of the terrorist bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma City–the Jim Lehrer Newshour unwittingly interviewed Ayers, an unrepentant bomber of Federal buildings:
MS. BRACKETT: After hearing the announcement, university professor and reform activist William Ayers moved quickly. How long did it take you to decide to go after the money for Chicago?
WILLIAM AYERS, University of Illinois: Thirty seconds.
MS. BRACKETT: And what did you need to know about it, and how did you start?
WILLIAM AYERS: Well, what I knew about it the first day, what I read in the newspaper is the same thing that everyone else read in the newspaper, which was that Amb. Annenberg was going to give $1/2 billion to reform urban schools. And at that moment, I knew that Chicago had to be at the top of the list and if it wasn’t at the top of his list or his advisers’ list, we had to put it there.
MS. BRACKETT: Ayers and other reformers spent the next year putting together a grant application. They thought they had a good chance at the money because they could point to reform efforts already underway in Chicago schools. Over the past five years, Chicago has undergone the most extensive restructuring of any urban school system in the country. A 1988 School Reform Act brought about decentralization of the school bureaucracy, increased local control by parents, and the use of innovative teaching methods. Private money has played a critical role in reform from the beginning says Warren Chapman of the Joyce Foundation, a foundation that has made $13.6 million in grants for reform over the last five years.
Given the central role that Ayers played in the launch of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge does it make sense that he had no role or thought in seeing that Barack Obama was named Chairman of the Board to oversee the activities of the Ayers/Hallett created foundation? And we are asked to believe that he had no contact of any consequence with William Ayers? That Ayers, according to Obama, was just some guy in the neighborhood? It is nothing more than a bald faced lie.
Here is what V. Dion Haynes reported on 23 June 1995 in the Tribune:
Barack Obama, a Chicago lawyer and chairman of the Annenberg Challenge board, added, “If we’re really going to change things in this city, it’s going to start at the grass-roots level and with our children.”
Barack was interviewed again in December 1995 by Sabrina L. Miller who wrote:
There were more than 400 applications for grants this year, and those selected best addressed three problems Annenberg sees as the biggest obstacles to educational reform: lack of networking among schools, better time management and smaller class size, said Barack Obama, president of the board of directors of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.
So William Ayers works his heart out to get this money, Barack Obama is named President/Chairman of the Board, and the two barely know each other? Horseshit!
Too bad Ben Smith is too damn busy to ask the Obama a very simple quesiton–why does the Senator decline to speak about his time as President of a $100 million dollar foundation.? You would think that a guy who is so challenged on the question of experience would trot this out as one of his chief exhibits. But he does not. Why? Because a full examination of this period of his life will reveal that Barack is lying about his ties to Ayers. This is not guilt by association. This is guilt by a long term working relationship. What is he hiding?

Ben Smith is not a bad guy, I think, but I agree with you that his reportage has been a bit (well, more than that, actually) Obama-slanted. All of Politico was doing better on telling the truth about Obama after Obama’s camp turned their wrath on Politico for telling the truth about the Obama/Clinton camps’ tension on the eve of the DNC, but since then, well, perhaps things have regressed a bit. I certainly trust your reading on such matters.

NavyVet, I believe you. Unfortunately, at least some of Ben Smith’s instincts and practices — as well as those of his Politico cohorts — are not what one would hope for from a would-be reporter.
Remember, Politico is just a Johnny-come-lately on the scene. Though they have been successful so far, they very well may have to clean house on at least some of their staff if they are to be considered a bona fide news gathering organization.
Having a successful company, that is, does not necessarily mean you have good reporters or ‘journalists.’ Just ask MSNBC.

Smith, Jonathan Martin and many other media figures (and certainly not at just Politico, either) routinely cut corners and sponge-up others’ stories as their own. I know something about this subject as regards Politico. The truth is, that’s how media works.
However, that doesn’t mean that corners should be cut on following-up on stories one is appropriating for one’s own column/site/etc.
Again, I like Smith, Martin and Politico. They have the skills and the moxy to get the job done, but that doesn’t mean that this is always the end result.

I have been cross-posting your videos and believe it or not-for some voters- this is the first time they have ever seen/heard McCain/Palin .
Many positive remarks from independent or Democratic voters who have been quite pleasantly surprised by how well they connect to these candidates.
When you hear a speech in whole, and in context, it makes a big difference in forming an opinion about what you think a candidate said or meant to say.
Which sound bites to use from speeches are at the discretion of producers and editors and writers. It involves the injection of these individuals’ personal opinions about the candidate when determining which sound bite will appear on their TV station or radio program or newspaper or blog site.
And..quite frankly…there has been too much subliminal injection of opinion leaning heavily towards Sen Obama in the nightly news, radio,blogs etc.
When I listen to certain radio programs where host makes comment about what McCain or Palin said during certain event-since I have seen/heard speech (a couple of times on videos you produced) I can challenge them (radio hosts) on presentation of facts and interpretation of statements made by candidates.

This is not new. The MSM completely ignored all sorts of juicy stuff about Bush and Cheney. For example, both Bush and Cheney have criminal records. But you heard nothing about it in the media, because the media was plumping for the Republicans back then.

Larry, this is an excellent article. The writing style is clear, easy to understand and the links you provide containing articles written by others-are also very easy to understand.
Sometimes people turn away from concentrating on certain issues (Ayers, Wall Street etc…) because the issues are presented to the public in such a complicated way to make the public feel stupid (intentionally and unintentionally) and thereby dis-empowering them from thinking about the issue and…believing that they can do something-take some kind of action. Important issues that need to be investigated are thereby trivialized because the information/facts were not presented to the voters in a coherent manner, in context, or in a language that lay-people can understand. You dont need a Ph.D to understand what NQ articles are saying. And, no one can accuse you of being conspiracy theorists-not with all the excellent supporting links you guys include in your articles.

To your point M.Simon-the debate scheduled for this Friday at the University of Mississippi will focus on foreign policy-I think. This is an area where Sen McCain has a perceived advantage over Sen Obama.
I wish we could bring the Ayers situation up during the debate-but I dont think they will entertain it because it might be off topic. Maybe this could be brought up in future debate.
However-IS THERE ANY WAY THAT WE (Voters) CAN SUGGEST that certain foreign policy issues be discussed during this debate? WHo decides the questions to be asked. I would be VERY interested in learning more about Sen Obama’s discussions with Iraqi officials dealing with the delay in US troops returning back home. I would also ask about the conflicting information about Sen Obama’s Iraq position- as brought up in a past interview conducted by the Late Tim Russert. Sen Obama’s policy towards Iraq has been well-covered here at NQ on many occaisions.

I suspect McCain does not bring this up for the same reason a good trial lawyer does not ask a question of a witness that he does not already know the answer to. It could backfire on him.

Anyone, religious or not, can understand this principle. Whenever you find yourself wanting to see gray as black, you know you’re going wrong, Larry. Try to let go of your personal, emotional anger at Obama and think sensibly about the very important ISSUES facing the country right now. As mad as we all are at Obama and his campaign, this is politics and we are adults.

Character evidence is just as important as factual evidence in assessing the veracity of the proponent of the facts. Often there are competing facts, as you say varying shades of gray, and those differing shades being asserted by different proponents. The character of the proponent is therefore the sole determinant as to the weight the asserted facts are to be given when trying to draw a logical inference from these varying shades of gray.
Yes, we need to seriously address the issues facing this country, and each candidate and various others will all give their reasoned analysis of how each of these issues are to be addressed. To whom do you give the most credibility and whom do you accuse of blowing smoke? You look to character of the proponent to determine if the stated position is consistent with the past conduct of proponent. Character is therefore highly useful as an indicator of how the proponent will act irrespective of the spoken words proposed for such action.
Exactly, we have to rely on character as a judge of leaders, because character shows the direction of a person’s response. We can’t know what problems will come in the future or the details of their circumstances and come up with firm plans now, but if we know a person responded to past problems with laziness or with vigor, we can infer they will do the same in the future. So far, no candidate of all that we started with on both sides has shown less character or grit than B-0, and there is no reason to predict he will become truthful or altruistic in the future.

Sometimes things aren’t gray but black. Every person who supported the Nazi regime told themselves that it wasn’t really so bad, that the ISSUES faced by Germany were far more important than the intolerance focused on the Jewish community; what’s wrong with ignoring the actions when the message is so important, they asked.
But the survivors of the Nazi purge have seen exactly the phenonoma described, that “suppose that something turns up suggesting that the story might not be quite true, or not quite so bad as it was made out.” Anything can be rationalized away if you are willing to deny it and these survivors are telling their stories knowing quite well that there will be those who think it exaggerated and untrue. Some escaped to tell their story before the liberation of the death camps and those they told it to thought it was exaggerated and did nothing.

Fine, Obama did not hold a fundraiser at Ayers’s house. I have no problem accepting that. So he was not one of countless politicians who have fallen into the trap of being “associated” with a guy who just happened to want to open his house up for a party to raise money for a particular candidate.
Instead, Obama was there because he’s good friends and colleagues with an unrepentant terrorist. It had nothing to do with raising money.

The only people that are reporting on this is Fox. The mainstream media is still out there trying to tare down Palin. I just saw two hit pieces on her this morning on “up to the minute” on CBS . They just said something about how it would interfere with oil production. Then they had something about shooting wolfs. How does this have anything to do with presidential politics. Don’t you realize that it a critical piece of voter information to know that Todd Palin, even though he is not running for elected office, had a DUI conviction 20 years ago before he was ever married to Sarah? Did they even know each other at that time? He would have been in his early 20’s at that time. Of course this DUI is far more important because it shows one time youthful indiscretion instead of a socially acceptable habitual drunkenness which obviously qualifies one to maintain a Senate seat, especially if you are of a blue blood Massachusetts family with the ability to pay off enough local officials to avoid an involuntary manslaughter charge. If you have a brother that is habitually drunk, that automatically qualifies you to be president and make jokes and even profit off it by branding your own beer named after your drunk brother.

Yeah, I’ve been following it on FOX, too but it’s a story that’s being told like a strip tease … a little bit exposed at a time. A bit on O’Rielly a bit on Greta a bit on H&C (why does Colmes continue to talk over the guests). Tonight O’Rielly talked about Obama’s community organizing days and said he appeared to be “sincere” and “effective” in that role. Greta exposed the Ayers story a bit more tonight but it’s still that maddening tease. And where are the records from Obama’s years in the Illinois State Senate? Not only does Obama not want to speak of his work with Ayers, he also cannot shed light on his agenda in the state senate of Illinois. It would be nice to see FOX do a segment on “What Obama Will Do With Your Money” and illustrate examples of what he did with Illinois’ taxpayers’ money and the Annenberg dollars.
For me personally, it’s gotten to the point where the media’s insistance on forcing 0bama on me has hardened my resolve byond repair. Just because they want him, I don’t. That they can’t step back from the forest to see the damage they are doing to his candidacy makes me even more committed not only to not vote for 0bama, but to keep my tv turned off as it is now.
I can live with that.

This was true of the 2000 and 2004 elections, when the media ignored all kinds of juicy information about George W. Bush.

This would have made for some interesting discussions about character and qualifications to run for office. But the media was too busy printing smears the Republicans made up.
Bush’s past cocaine and alcohol problems, his history of torturing animals as a child, and other juicy tidbits never came out in the MSM, because George W. Bush was the guy they wanted.
Now the rotten candidate is the Democrat, but the MSM has closed ranks around him. We can only hope the American people have wised up that the media always picks the lousy candidate.

The Chicago Tribune (and the Chicago Sun Times) have been pretty good at covering some of the sleaze-related issues, even if a few of their reporters and their Editorial Boards are in the tank for Obama. The Illinois legislative sharks smell blood in the water, and have overridden (by a vote of 55 to 0) Governor Blagojevich’s veto of an ethics ordinance that had been passed in connection with the “pay-to-play” scandals in Chicago, after Obama was embarrassed into contacting his Senate President mentor, Emil Jones, and asking that the measure be allowed to come up for a vote. This is just starting to roll, and it’s a shame that there is not more time for this story to come out before the election. It is surprising that against clear evidence to the contrary that everyone wants to say that Ayers and Obama did not know each other. As discussed here and in previous posts by Larry, Steve Diamon, Bud White, myself, and others at NoQuarter (Do search on “Ayers Obama”) there is link back to 1987, plus Obama worked for Ayers, they spent $160 million together, worked together through multiple organizations from 1995 to at least 2001, were involved in the same circle of friends, professional colleagues, and more more.
It is making me wonder why the media, like Ben Smith are so determined to ignore information right in front of them. Even O’Reilly, Kurtz, and Hannity minimize things and most of the main stream media won’t even give it a moment’s comment.
Further, Kurtz has been silent on this for a while, Steve Diamond has pulled his web site and hasn’t shared info he claimed to have, and no one else has commented on the now accessible CAC docs at UIC.

Kat, I think someone else posted this over the weekend and it makes sense in a twisted and perverted way. Some of the radicals who tried to hijack the anti-war movement in the 70s are reappearing in 2008 in an odd way. It makes me wonder if Ayers has been trying all these years to promote his revolution by going through the school system to create generations of radicals. The idea of parental involvement in their children’s education doesn’t seem like a bad idea on the face of it, but why try to destroy the Teacher’s Union? Ayers, Dohrn, Wright and Pfleger all living in the same city, all radicals, and all united in trying to help Obama’s career can’t be a coincidence no matter how many times he or the press tries to dismiss the problem. I am so curious about his senior thesis. I hope someone will be able to find a copy in the next two or three weeks and information about his time at Columbia.

Hillary was on some news channel this morning talking about why people should vote for Obama. It WAS NOT convincing. Basically she said it was for a change in leadership. She didnt even attempt to say anything that promoted Obama as being a good leader, no accomplishments to brag about…nope, nothing. What I think is funny is Democrats are saying Obama would be better than George Bush which isn’t a far stretch. But George Bush is not running for President-John McCain is. And he’s not George Bush.
She’s going through the motions so no one can ever get her on her words as thwarting O-zero, but as you see it’s like double-speak, or lawyerese, you have to read between the lines. She sent me a rather oddly specific group of down-ticket dems she wanted supported, making me think she is trying to position to reform the party. I know you would like to see her call out all the rottenness that has gone on, we all would–but now is not the time, and in-your-face is not the way.

Something I have read in other reports was not addressed here. And that is a possibility that Ayres and Obama may have met during Obama’s time at Columbia. Ayres was supposed to have been there at the same time. But no one seems to be able to tie that loose end up.
It does seem strange that Ayres chose Obama to head up his foundation without knowing Obama from somewhere. Did Obama submit a Resume? Can that document be found? Maybe that is in the documents that Kurtz has got from the University of Illinois. There is still much info to be mined from this.

I know its odd but there really is documentation to back up that part of the story. What is most curious to me is that we know that Obama and Ayers are lying about when they met. We also know that Obama and Ayers have close ties to another person, Uncle Frank (and now, with Dorn and Michelle going back to when Barry met Michelle, make that two links putting Ayers and Obama together,) what is there which keeps them apart in New York when Barry was at Columbia?
Their schools were four blocks apart and their politics were nearly identical. I believe not enough is being done to check public records to see whether anything comes up which connects Ayers, Dorn and Obama in New York. Prove this and win an election…
What’s sad is that Obama’s “youth” crowd wouldn’t care if Ayers got out and campaigned beside the little twerp. Obama’s relationship with Ayers seems to go back further than Annenberg.
Bill Ayers and his father Tom helped get Obama a job at Sidley & Austin in 1989, according to Andy Martin’s research. There, Obama met future wife Michelle. Bernardine Dohrn was also working there and by some accounts, she and Michelle were already friends.
There is also a question as to whether Obama and Ayers knew each other in NYC, when he attended Columbia. His life then is a mystery.
It’s also possible that Obama was led to Ayers when he was a student at Occidental, where he belonged to the socialist SDS, a cousin of Weather Underground.
I suspect that it may even be possible that Frank Marshall Davis knew Tom Ayers, and steered Obama towards them as long ago as high school.
Where are the professional journalists? Apparently they had a sufficient budget to descend upon Alaska and dig up the fossils of Sarah Palin’s life and family. Why haven’t they researched Obama’s deep ties to SDS-type influences in his life.
It’s sloppy at best. I’d call it journalistic malpractice.

Sen. Barack Obama claims there has been only a “shift in emphasis,” not “wild shifts,” in his political positions. Many already know the list: Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, NAFTA, public financing of campaigns, abortion, gay marriage, Social Security taxes, the death penalty and negotiating with rogue nations.
Possibly one of the more remarkable changes has been his position on guns.
But despite Obama’s recent concession on “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer” that there has been a “shift in emphasis” on various issues, on guns he held firm: “You mentioned the gun position. I’ve been talking about the Second Amendment being an individual right for the last year and a half. So there wasn’t a shift there.”
Unfortunately, the interviewer, Gwen Ifill, didn’t challenge his claim.
Obama obviously thinks the gun issue is important. Why else is it one issue on which he won’t admit shifting emphasis? But would anyone believe a promise by him that his judicial nominees wouldn’t vote to reverse the court’s close 5-to-4 decision on the Second Amendment?

He is dying to be the ruler of the world, to have his minions do his dirty deeds, and he is almost there, just one more step to go until he holds the highest office in our land.
He is a sick man who must be stopped, and I will use my vote to stop him.
This democrat is voting republican, its the only way to prevent Obama from gaining the presidency.
Please do not sit home and hope for the best, do not write in Hillary in most states it is a vote for Obama or just a protest vote. The only way to prevent our country from being in the hands of the sickest man I have seen in my lifetime, is to vote and vote republican.
We all know his dirty dealings during the voting, and believe me we are going to be ready for him this time. He will not disregard our votes like he did during the convention. We will be watching for fraud in November, we will insure that Obama cant get hold of our machines to tamper with them, that he wont get hold of our voting microchips and sabotage them in some way.
These are things we must be diligent in watching out for. Volunteer to be a poll worker, I have. Watch what is going on around you, do not allow anyone to vote without the proper voter card and identification. Do not be intimidated!
We will have a man in the White House that is a true patriot, a man of morals and character, a man who isn’t hiding his past from his fellow Americans.
John McCain will be our next president, those of us who’s votes weren’t counted will make sure of that. 18 million, can and will make a difference, we will remember in November!

After reading the snit by Ben Smith of “The Politico” last night, I left reminded that in this political season the 4th estate has done the American public a disservice.
After the Iraq War started, the 4th estate spent months before they finally decided that maybe they were vigilant enough with their reporting running up to the war.
In this election, the 4th estate repeats it’s error by falling into the same trap.

In this election, the 4th estate has actually allowed one of the candidates to write his own narrative, based on two auto-biographical books, that is full of holes for large time sequences.
Today, with only 40 some days remaining till the election, a bit of one of those 4 year holes is filled in, but much is still left unknown.
Will the 4th estate be comtemplating the navel for that time or will they begin to ask the questions that will give the American people a complete story ?
Not only does the future of their craft stand in balance, the future of the country demands better.
If they are not up to the challenge .. we will look elsewhere.

After reading your post, Larry, I looked around a little trying to find something about Obama’s time as a student at Columbia. Do you know if he has been back there since he began his campaign (other than the Forum)? I found another Ben Smith post from January and he had been invited back, but hadn’t acted on the invitation.
I also checked his photo album and there is only one picture of him while he was a student there and he is alone in a park. There is another picture with his grandparents and it may be in the same park, but who took the picture?
Thank you for the info on Ayers. I hope some of this comes out in a national ad because I have a feeling many people don’t understand or haven’t really made a connection. It didn’t really come up at all in the primaries until the last PA debate and then he cancelled the other two scheduled debates.
