We have several neighbors who have just walked away from their homes, and therefore their debt, because they a)bought between 2005-2006 and couldn't afford it b)got risky equity loans and can no longer afford the payments. One of the houses that's on the market right now, the owners bought new, like us, and they're trying to sell short. Because Clark County, NV, has all these records online, I've been checking a lot of them out and my husband and I are appalled at these particular neighbors. They bought their house for just under $110K and they're trying to sell short at almost $200K! Got lots of expensive toys, though. And I'm supposed to pay for that? Something else here that's ticking us off even more, though, are the people who are walking away from their debt, that CAN afford the payments, but just don't want to, 'cause their house isn't worth the half mil' they paid for it 3 years ago. I understand that the bailout will help banks review loans that have the potential of going into foreclosure, with the object of "making payment terms affordable" to those who took out the loans. Reality is that they SHOULD lose their homes, and market forces should be allowed to adjust home prices to levels that can be sustained, given the means of current potential buyers.
