When I had a stopover in Hawaii on the way from the US to the south Pacific, I only had 5 hours, and time to do one thing in Honolulu. I went to the Arizona Memorial.

It is not as imposing as Arlington, with its seemingly unending rows of white stones. But it is in-your-face real. You can indeed see oil still seeping from the ship, a turret, etc. There is a wall containing the names of those who sacrificed, grouped by branch of service, and multiple people stopped and stood there for quite a long time. They probably were, like me, reading EVERY name, because I felt that the least I could do was to take the time to acknowledge each person individually.

For what it's worth, I did not think of Palin when I read the words in question.

I thought, wow, when these kids did this, most of them were probably doing something so much bigger than anything they'd ever done before in their lives, and they were doing it for Allied leaders they've never even met.

Blue has a plausible argument, but at least one person (me) saw something different when she read the words.

An Alaskan friend tells me that a significant portion of Alaskans, possibly greater than 50%, have secessionist leanings. It is not considered especially radical or unpatriotic up there, but is sort of a frontiersman's self-sufficiency "state pride" kind of thing. Yes, those people think THAT differently than the New England elite.

I don't want Alaska to secede, but to bring some of that culture of frontiersman self-sufficiency to Washington doesn't seem like a bad idea. By "self-sufficiency", I don't mean everyone for themselves. I mean, developing a good economy, and if the returns from it are great enough, distributing some of the profits back to citizens, as Alaska does with its oil income.

I mean reducing our dependence on foreign investors that buy our debt.

I mean bringing back more resource-based, manufacturing-based jobs to America -- if that means a bit more trade protectionism than in recent years, to bring foreign goods' prices closer to those of American-made goods, so be it. The family that shops at Wal-Mart will be worse off for a while, but the tariffs paid by the importers will go right into the government to help us stabilize the budget deficit and maybe even begin to pay it down. And that will ultimately have a positive effect on the economy (ref: Clinton years, balanced budget, etc.).

Thank you again Larry. It reminded me of visiting my Dad's grave in the Massachusetts National Cemetary in Bourne, MA for the first time 2 years ago. He was a Navy veteran from the Korean War. I followed in his footsteps, the only woman in my family to serve our country!

I will never support Obama. McCain has his reasons for not voting for these bills and all are good reasons. And sometime look at the earmarks and pork attached to those bills for veterans. He stands against them and has to stay true to his stance against them. I don't want him saying yes to anything until the 800,000 backlogged claims are completed with the personnel they have now! And I want the VA to give the benefit of the doubt to the veteran as it states in Title 38. This is not being done and it is being influenced from the top down. I am a disabled veteran who did not have a GI Bill. I was in favor of military members giving more time for these benefits as was McCain matter of fact I think they should have to give six years for their benefits like my original enlistment!). Am I bitter you bet I am especially when Ihear the young military members say I didn't join the military to go to war or have my tour extended. WTF? What the heck do they joined the military for...to get tons of bucks for school?....NOT The other problem is the VA has still not been overhauled. I look forward to McCain getting it done. I live nearly 40 miles from a VA Center that trusts me with disdain at all times...Here is what I usually get from the VA Are you the veteran? Like a woman can't be a veteran! Oh! I have never had a female veteran patient before! and get no gas money for that trip....I am a rural veteran....McCain has proposed that I be allowed to see my PCP for all regular care...I have to go to the VA for bloodwork at 7 am and sit there for three to four hours waiting on my doctor's appointment. Do you do that? And of course I have to pay $6-$7 dollars for a breakfast (I am no longer reimbursed for that meal) so I can take my meds. Do you have to do that?

While we are at Bill Clinton had a horrible record where the VA is concerned. Jesse Brown told Bill if you didn't right by veterans I will resign as VA Secretary and that is what happened.

Obama lied about his uncle's service. He was not in the Army at all he was in the USN. I fact checked. It was really easy to do since I live in Kansas. Obama only wants a photo op and when he couldn't get it with campaign ads, he cancelled his visit in Germany!

Larry thank you for this view of the cemetary. Though I visited in France, I was too far to visit the cemetary! It truly brought tears to my eyes!

You are wrong about Obama being the first AA senator from Illinois. Carol Mosely Braun, a black female was first. She was legitimately elected with black and white, democratic and Republican support, especially women.

You are describing Obama, not the Honorable Senator John McCain our next president.

Take your garbage to another website and peddle it, it ain't gonna register on this one.

Thank you, Larry, for this beautiful post that is a loving remembrance and reminder to us all about all the truly self-less acts of courage so many Americans have performed for our freedom. The photos are lovely. Thank you for those, too.

God bless all those individuals and their families for their service to our great country.

Yes, someone who was horribly tortured because he served his country is not a troop. Obama is now a troop, a hero, etc. while never coming within whiffing distance of combat.

Remember his story that he would have served in Vietnam? Another lie. By the time he was eligible the war was over. But apparently military families don't mind if Obama lies on the dead, the wounded, and the survivors of combat or military service.

I like Hillary and would have preferred her as a candidate. I'm well aware of what she did for veterans, especially female veterans.

What has Obama done? Wear a bracelet. Hillary set up an office for female veterans and McCain put his a$$ on the line.

But none of that counts. Because they're not Obama. Sure he played basketball with ambulatory troops. But he couldn't go to Landstuhl to visit the bed-ridden troops.

Obama is NOT going to "save the troops in Iraq" . He said he will re-deploy them to Afghanistan.

Does that sound like they're all coming home any time soon? NO.
