Remember When Obama Said He Chaired the Banking Committee (Chris Dodd’s Committee)?

Since Barack Obama doesn’t have time to be in D.C. during the intense negotiations over the financial crisis, it’s probably a good thing he really isn’t the chair of the Banking Committee — not that it’s any better that Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) aka “Senator Acorn” is in charge. Besides, as all of you regular readers know, Barack Obama has NO time for the committees that he IS on, even NO time for the subcommittee he chairs but has utterly ignored for two years because, as he admitted in a primary debate, he’s too busy “running for president.”

Dusted off, here’s my July 23rd story on Obama’s gaffe and related fall-out:

__________________________

Yet Another Worrisome “Obamaism”: The Banking Committee Is “My Committee” [UPDATES], July 23, 2008:

At today’s press conference, Barack Obama said that the U.S. Senate’s banking committee is his committee, which will surely come as a surprise to the chairman of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs committee, Christopher Dodd, an Obama sycophant.

Not only is the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs not HIS committee, Barack Obama is not even a member of the committee:

bankingcommittee2.jpg

Perhaps Senator Obama is having a “senior moment”? It’s reminiscent of his stating that there are 57 states in the U.S. Actually, I think that Obama probably doesn’t remember which committees he is on, given his dilatory, lackluster inattention to his duties on the committees on which he does serve. Shall we bring up his failure to hold a single hearing as Chair of the Subcommittee on European Affairs, which is part of the Senate’s Foreign Policy Committee? As Joseph Wilson wrote here:

As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on Europe, with jurisdiction over NATO, he has held not a single oversight meeting because, as he admitted, he was too busy running for president, even though NATO’s presence in the Afghanistan war is critical to success in that venture.

    – “Legitimate questions of judgment, experience” by Joseph Wilson, May 4, 2008

As the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee subcommittee on Europe, he has not chaired a single substantive oversight hearing, even though the breakdown in our relations with Europe and NATO is harming our operations in Afghanistan. Nor did he take a single official trip to Europe as chairman. This is the sum total of his actions in the most important responsibility he has had in the Senate. What are his actual experiences that reassure us that when the phone rings at 3 a.m. he will know what to do, which levers of power to pull, or which world leaders he can count on?

    – “Obama’s Shallow Credentials on National Security Are Dangerous for the Country” by Joseph Wilson

Thanks to PPM for sending me the link to the video.

I find this appalling on many levels.

First, it is wholly inappropriate to refer to any committee as “MY” committee. It is not only ungentlemanly, it is egotistical.

Second, it is a flat-out lie that shows his utter lack of attention to his Senate duties in the VERY short time he has been a U.S. Senator.

Third, here is the list of committees on which Senator Obama theoretically serves.

:::::::

UPDATES: Memeorandum.com is tracking the story; CNN’s Political Ticker and several blogs have reported Obama’s (to be polite) misstatement. The Chicago Tribune has picked up the story. I’m certain that MSNBC and Keith Olbermann will be all over this too, especially since Keith constantly criticizes other news networks for not being “fair and balanced.” LATEST UPDATE:THE FINE LINE BETWEEN PANDERING AND LYING.”

(I used to say, “Imagine if Hillary had said this.” Now, I say, “Imagine if McCain had said this. It’d be reported at the top of every news show.”)

How in the world is this guy leading in the polls? I cannot believe the American voters are that uneducated about what is going on here. He is now taking credit for solving the financial crisis when he wasn’t even going to bother showing up. He was out-debated and his biggest response was to take McCain’s answers and make them his. This guy has no qualms about just taking everyone elses ideas and just boldly stating he thought them first. How do people not see this stuff! I’ve got to give his minions in his campaign some disgusting credit for just telling him to say anything that gets him to look like a hero. It is just so ridiculous that people actually are sucking this up. And the smilin MSM just helps happily to move it along. I was in Toronto this week and I’m thinking it looks mighty good in Canada these days. Looks like they are going to elect a Conservative government very soon. Plus they use their resources for themselves and as a financial boon for their country. Might give it some thought to relocate if America is taken over by these Obama thugs and communists.

An Obama spokesman tells CNN “it was his bill, not his committee,” referring to the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act that the Illinois senator sponsored and introduced in May 2007. The measure was then referred to the Banking Committee, and passed a vote of 19-2 on July 17.

In a meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu Wednesday, Obama told the former Israeli Prime Minister, “I could fall asleep now standing up,” after Netanyahu asked him how his whirlwind trip to the Middle East and Europe is going.

Senate Banking Committee Passes Obama Provisions on Divestment in Iran Sanctions Bill
Thursday, July 17, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Michael Ortiz, 202 228 5566

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barack Obama today applauded the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee’s passage of the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act of 2008, which includes provisions Obama offered last year in the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act of 2007 (S. 1430). The Obama provisions clarify that state and local governments can divest from companies that invest $20 million or more in Iran’s energy sector and provide safe harbor for private fund managers who divest from such companies. The Committee approved the measure by a vote of 19 to 2.

“Preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons is a vital national security priority. In addition to an aggressive, direct, and principled diplomatic effort, we must continue to increase economic pressure on Iran to convince its government to halt its nuclear program, support for terrorist activity, and threats toward Israel.

“This important bipartisan legislation will allow state and local governments and private fund managers to divest from companies that support Iran’s energy sector, reducing the revenue Iran uses to expand its nuclear program and sponsor terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.

“I commend Chairman Dodd for his leadership on this important issue, and I call on the Senate to quickly pass this legislation.”

Guess what, if you listen to the words out of his own mouth the story is quite a bit different. Just like always, their they are, the excuse makers spinning him out of his own very plainly stated speech. You are why this country will be torn apart if he somehow gets elected. Nice work and I hope you are paid well. You’ll need it if your deceitful leader gets the job he’s cheating for.

Speaking of the Banking Committee and the financial crisis – Barack has supposedly said that McCain can take absolutely “zero credit for the bailout” (or something very close to that)…

Arrgh – I can’t stand this guy – he is such a liar – he has been “phoning it in” for days now and he makes it sound like he was sent by God to clean up all the messes.

Worse still, the donations he has received and the advisors he has shows that he was clearly a HUGE part of this crisis happening in the first place.

And the worst – too many people seem to be believing him – he is at 50% in a number of the tracking polls.

When will America wake-up? I feel like I’ve been praying for a long time – watching Hillary not be able to take this guy down and now, it seems like the Republicans can’t even do it. How is this possible??

Oh sweet mama! Of course, the governor may be the first to go? And the state treasurer, who Obama propped up so he’d prevail, even though a far more experienced Democratic candidate ran against him in the primary.

Thanks, Mar, for this great tip. We should try to write this up. I need Truthteller to check this — he’s our true expert on all things Rezko.

Advantage: experience
September 27, 2008

Friday night in Oxford, Miss., moderator Jim Lehrer tried to force the men who would be president to confront how a costly bailout of America’s credit markets will constrain their grand plans for the next four years. That’s likely to be the shadow lingering over official Washington for much if not all of someone’s first term in the White House.

If you saw the debate, you didn’t see Barack Obama or John McCain hit that question out of the park. You saw, instead, maddening exercises in small-ball. This nation’s debt is fast approaching $9.8 trillion—and any bailout likely will, in the short run, push that number into (gulp) the low 14 digits. You didn’t hear anybody acknowledge that Friday night.

Instead, Obama initially responded by listing areas from energy to education to infrastructure where he’d devote new spending, eventually acknowledging that he’d have to delay some of those expenditures. McCain proposed a freeze on federal spending outside defense, veterans’ care and entitlements—a collective so massive that, when coupled with mandatory debt payments, wouldn’t leave much to freeze. Obama and McCain have five weeks to develop better answers. We suggest they get cracking.

As the debate shifted to national security issues, McCain demonstrated why many voters see this as a strong area for him. He’s been involved for decades in deciding whether the U.S. engages militarily in hot spots such as Somalia, Lebanon and Bosnia—and it shows. His cautious words about the careful use of power indirectly addressed the fear of some Americans that he’d be a trigger-happy president. Similarly, Obama’s pledge to add troops in Afghanistan and his forceful language on terrorist breeding grounds in Pakistan addressed the fear of other Americans that he’d be a weak commander in chief.

On Iraq, Obama spoke repeatedly about his opposition to initiating that war. But he didn’t directly respond to McCain’s key points—that a surge-enabled victory in Iraq will leave this country with a stable ally in a bad neighborhood, and that the next president has to decide not whether to enter Iraq but how to leave in a way that best serves America. Obama gamely noted that he had chosen Sen. Joe Biden, a specialist in foreign affairs, as his vice presidential candidate.

The bulk of Friday night’s debate took place on the turf McCain knows best: foreign affairs and military endeavors. That showed. Obama spoke capably on one topic after another; McCain, who has traveled to numerous crisis locales and joined in more foreign policy debates, spoke with more fluency and experience.

As one TV talking head said afterward, McCain spent the night on offense; Obama found himself playing more defense. The debate that almost didn’t happen was a serious—and decorous—affair. Over 90 minutes, though, Americans who’ve been following the campaign didn’t hear much that McCain and Obama haven’t said, and said, before.

Given the swing of poll numbers against him in recent days, McCain had to make the better showing in the Mississippi night. By some small measure, he did.

I’m so disturbed by all of the lies that have been uncovered from leadership. Just today I heard Pelosi claim that the Repugs refused to help with the bill but why do they even need them if they already have the votes? Do you know how many votes are needed to pass this? Could you write something about this?

Pelosi also released a “draft” of the new deal they are working on…

Pelosi won’t let the bill pass unless there are an equal number of republican votes for it so they have political cover. Frankly, I don’t think republicans are playing hard ball enough. They should be saying loud and clear that they do not have the votes to block it and the democrats do have the votes to pass it. If the democrats aren’t willing to pass it on party lines, maybe it shouldn’t pass.

Or here’s a novel thought: how about letting each and every member of congress vote their so called conscience, or rather, do what they think is politically expedient for them. Then just count the votes. I sometimes wish the constitution allowed for the president to force congress to take an up or down full floor vote.

Comment by mcpalin hill | 2008-09-28 13:35:11

no way no how no obama — Pelosi’s boobs are going to her head. She needed the Republicans because this is a poison pill which needed to be bi-partisan in order to be palatible. Besides the Republicans are the ones who took out the Pork before they would go along.

No No Obama gets all the credit because the Dems left him in charge of the White House meeting and he had everyone at each other’s throats. What a guy their leader is —- not.

This reminds me of the story about Lyndon Johnson when a visited some military facility. As he was leaving the presidential helicopter was parked in the vacinity of several other helicopters and LBJ began walking toward the wrong one. A young enlisted man who was part of the ceremonial entourage said, “sir, that’s your helicopter over there.” LBJ put his arm around him and said, “son, they’re ALL my helicopters.”

Can anyone really doubt that Obama thinks they are all his committees?

GOOD ONE!!!!!

Dear Colleagues,

Our nation has been confronted by a serious crisis in our financial markets. The President and this Congress were right to act with all deliberate speed in addressing this crisis.

We now have a deal that promises to bring near term stability to our financial turmoil, but at what price?

Economic freedom means the freedom to succeed and the freedom to fail.

The decision to give the federal government the ability to nationalize almost every bad mortgage in America interrupts this basic truth of our free market economy.

Republicans improved this bill but it remains the largest corporate bailout in American history, forever changes the relationship between government and the financial sector, and passes the cost along to the American people. I cannot support it.

Before you vote, ask yourself why you came here and vote with courage and integrity to those principals.

If you came here because you believe in limited government and the freedom of the American marketplace, vote in accordance with those convictions.

Duty is ours, outcomes belong to God.

We have fought the good fight. Now we need to finish the race and make sure that posterity and the American people know there were conservatives who opposed the leviathan state in this dark hour.

And if you do this I promise you, I will stand with you and, I believe with all my heart, the American people will stand with you as well.

Obama has no interest whatsoever in helping with the financial crisis and in addition he has NO IDEAS and no clue how to help. He wants to rip the benefit of a bad economy all for his own
personal ambition. That’s it. Besides that; please someone else take care of this sick baby. It is appalling. He would have not gone to DC AT ALL during the crisis if Bush hadn’t said in his address to the nation that he had summoned BOTH candidates back to Washington for a face to face meeting. We know McCain was already going so Bush’s order was to bring Obama by the ear.

Ask yourselves: Where were the candidates yesterday?

Obama was with Biden in NC campaigning and struggling with his teleprompter getting all rained in.

McCain cancelled all events and was in DC “awaiting” ( i.e available to help with
mediations/consultations/discussions with the House GOP et al.)

If that is not telling I don’t know what is.

Too bad none of this matters to the media and that the media (that is his real army) is succeeding in protecting and electing Obama: the polls today have him up by 8 — and include the debate–….

They had the headlines ready to claim an Obama win for the debate…if all the tv people keep repeating it enough people who didn’t even watch think Obama won…thus they get higher poll results…we have to stay on top of things and stop this kind of thing from happening …hell I don’t know how but we need to try…all the MSM is backing Obama…I saw a headline from USA Today I think saying “McCain won but will it matter?”…answer no because Obama controls the press.

This has to be one of the worse years in American History.

We have one of the sleaziest guys ever running for President with many people, including Main stream media turning a blind eye to anything and everything he does. 10 or 20 years ago this man would never have made it pass 1st base with out the media outing all the crazy rumors, truths and long list of corrupt/sleazier friends he has had for the past 20 to 50 years. And dont forget all the mispeaks/lies/untruths that he has spoken from the get go, and still speaks.

Now to top it off we have this crazy Wall Street Bailout, which doesnt seem to be helping people keep their homes, nor the middle class keep or get jobs. This Bailout only seems to be keeping the rich rich by maintaining their over priced bonuses, and retirements while putting a heavier burden on the American taxpayer. It also seems one of the crookiest organizations that the sleazy presidental nominee is involved with is to get 20% of the bailout(is that so he can buy the votes?).

What has happened to our country?? We are not just accepting 2nd rate, but we are scaping the bottom of the crap/sleazy/crimminal barrel for people to run our country. We are also ignoring the vast majority of the citizens, while bailing out crooks/account book cookers so that they can maintain and improve their millionaire status.

Comment by bethtopaz | 2008-09-28 20:50:24

You are not alone. Many Americans are fed up — it doesn’t matter if they’re Republicans or Democrats.

I am a Republican and I am sick of the corruption of our politicians.

You are right, too, about Obama — No experience, No qualifications, No Character (very bad character), No loyalty to America, I could go on – and he is this close to the Presidency.

Very. Scary.

I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone.

Comment by MMI | 2008-09-28 13:46:14

The Fed lends to institutions each day. This is not a taxpayer loan.

Congress spent months grilling athletes about steroids in sports. Now they are trying to get a bailout done in two weeks. This is a joke.

Oh come on, give that poor man a break…

He is busy running an expensive campaign which he claims is his executive experience (Did he teach that in his classes on Constitutional Law? That runnning a campaign is like working in the executive??) so that it matches his foreign relations experiences that he acquired during his school days in Indonesia and his vacations in Pakistan and Kenya…

Comment by Diana L. C. | 2008-09-28 13:47:36

Now the House Republicans need to have a media event. They need to get someone out there to explain why they balked, why the Democrats were desperate for their approval, though they didn’t need it for the votes. They need to make a strong statement about why it was important to have McCain there.

AND, in addition, they need to point out how O’s ACORN cronies were the problem in the first place.

He is lazy and immature…hey, that sounds like his good stepping soldiers behind him. Polls are not accurate. I honestly believed that gore had won. I called this guy and told him : man, your predictions are wrong. He asked me to wait and see. well, all I’m saying is that this guy told me that obama has a good chance of winning, and if he does, we wont be having presidential elections in 4 years. that scared the s**t out of me. well, lets see.

I’ve posted this one before, but I think it’s worthy of reading again. It’s typical Obullshit:

On June 11, 2002, Obama’s vote sparked a confrontation after he joined Republicans to block Democrats trying to override a veto by GOP Gov. George Ryan of a $2-million allotment for the west Chicago child welfare office.
Shortly afterward, Obama chastised Republicans for their “sanctimony” in claiming that only they had the mettle to make tough choices in a tight budget year. And he called for “responsible budgeting.”
A fellow Democrat suddenly seethed with anger. “You got a lot of nerve to talk about being responsible,” said Sen. Rickey Hendon, accusing Obama of voting to close the child welfare office.
Obama replied right away. “I understand Sen. Hendon’s anger. . . . I was not aware that I had voted no on that last — last piece of legislation,” he said.

Well , talking about “pea” brains. Anyone with more than a “pea” brain knows that there is a “WHITEY” tape. Bob Beckel almost shit himself when he admitted that there was a “Whitey” tape. John McCain is the reason why it has not been released. John McCain is a man of integrity and is not going to permit that tape to be released unless he feels it is absolutely necessary. John McCain will slowly destroy Obama without using a tape of Michelle spewing hate. We all know who Michelle is, we don’t need a tape to prove it, we have already heard her un-American comments.

And they are the masters of lying, deceit, and dirty campaigning. Obama has learned all of that very well and is applying it in his campaign to the letter. His lies are constant now and no one is calling him out. If they do, they are shot down by the MSM. What’s the old saying: A lie repeated often enough becomes the truth in people’s minds? Now even when McCain tries to fight the lies, he looks like he is the one lying. It is truly a frightening manipulation of the American public aided and abetted by the media. We need a major issue to change this tactic. Time is of the essence now in my opinion. The OB people will keep applying this pressure until someone makes them stop.

Did Obama say this?

What we must fight for is to safeguard the existence and reproduction of our race and our people, the sustenance of our children and the purity of our blood, the freedom and independence of the fatherland, so that our people may mature for the fulfillment of the mission allotted it by the creator of the universe. Every thought and every idea, every doctrine and all knowledge, must serve this purpose. And everything must be examined from this point of view and used or rejected according to its utility.

He could have. It certainly applies in everything he and his friends do. But if he ever said this he certainly wasn’t the first.

That, dear trolls, is what is known as a HISTORY LESSON.

Comment by Francis | 2008-09-28 15:12:14

No one has contacted me or my friends…

As Forrest Gump probably said: stupid is as stupid does. Obama is stupid; therefore his approach to people is stupid and he assumes others are as stupid as he is.

And that’s why his teleprompter speeches sound so stupid. They’re crafted by and with Mr Stupid for people he thinks are as stupid as he is.

SusanUnPC, I’m pondering this post and have a different conclusion. American Thinker has a fascinating article out today called Obama and the Manufactured Crisis. Basically stating that Obama’s network could have set in motion the banking / credit crisis we are now in. This would require a complicit Banking Subcommittee.
So these gaffes Obama makes, they are so out in left field I believe there is some truth to them. Like the 57 states – I believe this was no mere slip of the tongue I believe a critical reference point for him is the Nation of Islam with 57 states. In this instance, Chairing the Banking Committee, perhaps he was sooo close to the activities of Dodd, pulling strings behind the scenes, that he felt like he was running the committee.

Comment by Betty | 2008-09-28 16:57:43

Couldn’t be that you are missing something here, could there?

Chris Dodd takes his orders from ACORN and ACORN takes its orders from Obama?

So is the Banking Committee, which is vital to ACORN, has been overseen by Obama so much that he really feels as though the committee is his, and that is what that strange slip up was revealing?

Comment by BJ | 2008-09-28 19:45:14

Maybe he just got confused. Perhaps it is ACORN’s banking committee that he chairs…the committee that shakes down banks and mortgage companies so they will loosen their lending standards…you know, the committee that caused our financial crisis.
