Thursday Debate Rigged with Biased Moderator

From GateWayPunditDebate moderator Gwen Ifill has a conflict of interest and bias that is as obvious as it is arrogant. She is entrusted by the Commission on Presidential Debates to host a “a professional and nonpartisan” debate. But, in reality, Ifill goes to the debate with personal, professional, and financial motives to rig the debate against Governor Palin, whom she has already expressed bias against. Rig is not strong enough. Gwen Ifill will make money by throwing the debate to Senator Biden.

Gwen Ifill has written a pro-Obama book, The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. Not only is this book billed as “shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign,” it is scheduled to be released on January 20, 2009, Inauguration Day!

Ifill is a master drinker of Obama Cult Kool-Aid:

  • Questioned recently about her biases, Ifill is quoted by the Washington Post saying, “no one’s ever assumed a white reporter can’t cover a white candidate.” But what about a “reporter” who has a personal, professional, and financial stake?!
  • Ifill disingenuously observed when asked about the debate, that “I’m not running for anything.” Yet, she is selling a book!
  • “Despite the protestations of her colleagues that she will be fair, Ifill has appeared on numerous radio and TV talk shows over the past several months to cash in on her access to the Obama campaign. She recently penned a fawning cover story on the Obamas for Essence magazine that earned much buzz. The title? “The Obamas: Portrait of an American Family.”—Michelle Malkin
  • Anne Belle, spokeperson for Ifill’s PBS program, “The NewsHour” said “The book has been a known factor for months, so I’m not sure what the big deal is.”
  • Gwen Ifill herself wrote August that “The Obama generation is just beginning its run.”—Time on August 21, 2008

Early this morning, Greta Van Susteren reported at Fox News that “the McCain campaign did NOT know about Gwen Ifill’s book.”

Later in the day, Senator McCain observed in a FOX News interview that Ifill’s book was “not helpful,” but he took the high road and said that he trusted that Ifill would be professional. Not unsurprisingly, some in the MSM and pro-Obama blogs, such as Greg Sargent at TPM, omit noting that McCain said her pro-Obama book was unhelpful and ill-timed. Michael Calderone at Politico and Carl Cameron at FOX News have offered more challenging questions about the matter. (See Politico for coverage on both.) Governor Palin, for her part, said that she was “not gonna let it be a concern.”

In the understatement of the day, Juan Williams of NPR and FOX News said:

“Clearly her books aren’t going to do as well unless Obama wins, so it looks like she has some investment, literally, in one candidate or the other. And she’s supposed to be sitting there as a neutral arbiter during the debate,” said NPR’s Juan Williams, a FOX News contributor. “I think the world of Gwen Ifill but I know there’s a perception problem.”–FOX News.

This is a mockery of the necessary impartiality of debate hosts.

Earlier today, I asked if the debate commission and both parties know about Ifill’s pro-Obama book and if she disclosed it to them. NPR’s Mara Liasson, who spoke with Fox News’s Brit Hume this evening, noted that Gwen Ifill has stated that she did not tell the Commission on Presidential Debates about her book. The Commission has not made any comment on the matter.

In marketing the book timed to release on Inauguration Day, Gwen Ifill and her publisher have published the following on YouTube:

Why would anyone think Gwen Ifill can be unbiased in questioning the two VP candidates as she has a clear personal, professional, and financial stake in seeing that Biden does well and that Obama wins in November?

Further, Gwen Ifill has a clear disdain for Governor Palin. Note her report at the Republican Convention:

To be fair, the book was not a complete secret. In fact, it was noted on September 3rd in a Washington Post as a footnote, “Ifill is working on a book called ‘Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama’. She focuses on the Democratic nominee. …” And even though Ifill apparently made no secret of her upcoming book, until today none of the recent major news articles on the debate disclosed Ifill’s clear conflict of interest.

As I wrote earlier, however late the date, Gwen Ifill’s unmistakable conflict of interest should disqualify her. It is to the discredit of the Commission for Presidential Debates that, despite her conflict of interest and rather clear support of Obama, Ifill was chosen to moderate the debate. It is also disappointing to see that the MSM is either ignoring the conflict of interest or not inquisitive enough to put two-and-two together when the information is right in front of them.

What can we do? Be a squeaky wheel and write or call the Commission on Presidential Elections and their sponsors:

  • Commission on Presidential Debates at (202) 872-1020

Please be respectful! For example,

Is it the commission’s position that Gwen Ifill can be non-partisan in the debate Thursday when she has a new pro-Obama book set to publish Inauguration Day? She has a clear personal, professional, and financial motive to make sure that Biden wins the debate and that Obama wins the election. It is discrediting to your organization that you have her slated to moderate. I recommend and ask that you replace Ms. Ifill with someone who does not have a clear, unmistakable conflict of interest.

You see Mike, you didn’t complement Sara – that makes you a no-no on this site. Remember, you have to hate Obama and Biden and lie like a rug about them. otherwise you are a troll.
In fact, NO ONE has even said that the book is so pro-Obama. Just because she is African American it means her book is only complementary to Obama?
Every single news person has made the claim that Gwen is NOT partisan and would not be biased in her interview. And the book is NO SECRET and never has been. Dumb for the McCain people not to note this???? why did they agree to the debate with her as a moderator? McCain himself said he was not concerned about it.
Fox News can just stuff it….how you can listen to those bigotted slimy comentators is beyond me…..yuchhhhhh

Sarah Palin told the truth about Obama in he speech at the convention. The first words out of Gwen Ifill’s mouth were “Sarah Palin belittled Barack Obama”. Yeah, right, no bias there.

Susan:

Mike has another alternative,

He can stop giving to PBS during pledge week, as can we all.

Ifill should with draw before her deception does further damage to her cause.

Comment by Martin | 2008-10-01 20:13:11

Or it could have been that there were 57 primaries and caucuses in the Democratic presidential nomination universe! Maybe that’s it! This was the set of contests recently where Obama won the nomination. I don’t really remember who he beat – someone called Henrietta Cliptone or something.

Ahem, are you implying that Senator Obama needed almost two years to gain a rudimentary grasp of the issues and that he got his ass kicked in twenty odd primary debates?

Or that not one major print or television medium made any jokes AT ALL at Mr. Obama’s expense even though there was cornucopia of material, while McCain, Clinton and Palin are daily fodder for the same?

I’m afraid some would consider that racist.

Some idiots, that is.

That’s correct.

Sen Obama DID NOT win the Democratic primary he stole it-along with the help of the DNC.

View the video’s released on August 9th 2008 by the Sam J Ervin Jr, former chairman of Watergate commission, library and museum in Morgantown NC. According to producers, the DNC (with the support of the MSM) has perpetuated a crime and fraud against the American voters by claiming Obama as the presumptive nominee.

Obama’s Acorn people spent $800,000 to get him same day registration but Ken Blackwell assures us that nothing will be amiss hmm wasn’t Blackwell the one who stole the election for the Republicans? The word is McCain’s Campaign is thinking of taking this to the Supreme Court. If Obama gets same day registration this will be a total debacle.

The DNC timed the convention to coincide with the anniversary of MLK’s speech.

McCain’s campaign is going to force Bristol and Trig to get married to take all eyes off their terrible campaign, make people go “aaaaahhh” and all vote for them.

Sexual innuendo and the trashing of a disabled infant and a teenager.

Obama and his supporters are going to heal this country?

How? By implying all who disagree are inbred racists and mocking the elderly and disabled?

This is the best and brightest of America? These are the people mocking Palin for her lack of Ivy League degree?

That’s change. A change of cruelty, disdain, and attacking others not like you. Wasn’t Obama against attacking folks simply because they were different? What about his overtly right wing, ant-gay Faith and Family values Tour?

But I guess none of that counts.

Comment by Martin | 2008-10-01 20:40:46

What does this rant have to do with anything I said?

I think forcing 2 people who clearly made a hash of things and who don’t really like each other to marry for the sake of Mom’s career is disgusting. But, mind you, Palin had her own shotgun wedding too and that turned out OK. Still, planning a hasty wedding so McCain can galvanize a few votes is morally outrageous.

Comment by Zee | 2008-10-01 21:23:28

You are FOS and even Obama, in his best moment, said to LAY OFF THE PREGNANT UNWED TEEN, as HIS OWN MOM WAS, TOO.

But stay classy, Martin. You can’t even pick up a clue when your own messiah gives it to you.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-10-01 21:28:07

How you know that’s the case? Do you know them personally? Heck everyone in Palin’s hometown knew her daughter was pregnant. They figured Palin’s daughter and boyfriend would get married at some point.

You joked about Palin’s daughter, a teenager, and her son, a disabled infant getting married for political gain. You think that’s funny? Those of us who have/had disabled family members aren’t laughing. That’s just cruel.

But you couldn’t resist. Because you holier than thou Obama supporters don’t do that kind of thing. Except when you do.

Women’s shelter cuts Bernhard after gang-rape line

BOSTON – A women’s shelter on Wednesday cut headliner Sandra Bernhard from its annual benefit after she said Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin would be gang-raped if she ever visited New York.

Bernhard’s made the remarks last month during her one-woman show in Washington before Palin visited New York to campaign. Bernhard said Palin would be “gang-raped by my big black brothers” during a diatribe in which she also criticized Palin for opposing abortion rights.

Many guests at Rosie’s Place, a Boston shelter, have been victims of violence, public relations director Leemarie Mosca said.

“In light of our mission, we don’t think violence against women is a laughing matter,” she said

partial list of Gwen Ifill’s questions for the VP debate
Mayor Palin, Barack Obama is a handsome, charismatic demigod. How many boxes of Kleenex will you need after your crushing loss?

Senator Biden, what is your favorite color? And if you have time for a follow-up question: Why?

Mayor, you talk funny and you own a tanning bed. Why haven’t you released Trig’s birth certificate?

Senator, have you seen those pictures of Obama in his swim trunks? If not, I have them right here.

Mayor, what are the names, ages, and blood types of all 71 members of the Belgian Senate? And why are you unwilling to admit that your inability to instantly produce any and every fact I demand makes you unfit to stand in the way of history?

Senator, you’ve spoken at length. Could you please continue?

Mayor, which is your preferred method of stifling dissent, banning books or burning them? Since it’s both, please explain how you can deny the accusation that you’re a fascist, which I am making now.

Senator, could you please sign my book?

P.S. Do you suppose Saturday Night Live will change it to the Luxembourg Parliament?

I’ll tell you what if these people really believe Obama is Jesus, then he is the definition of an Anti-Christ. A deceiver and carries with him an agenda from Hell. I believe there have been many throughout history. Jesus never hid his past, or where he came from. He never lied, or endangered people’s lives. He would never have allowed newborn infants to lay in a soiled linen room till their death.

I am a Christian and just in the little bit I know about him, I would never say he is Jesus or my savior. He’d have to be more than just a good orator. This is just unbelievable.

And we’re worried about who will host a debate?

I know the parable of the seeds…
Here’s other’s that warn of false prophets.

Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. (Matthew 7:15)

“And what sadness is ahead for those praised by the crowds – for false prophets have always been praised!” Luke 6:26

Yet those other men keep telling you how wonderful they are, so here I go. You think you are so wise – yet you listen gladly to those fools; you don’t mind at all when they make you their slaves and take everything you have, and take advantage of you, and put on airs, and slap you in the face. I’m ashamed to say that I’m not bold and daring like them!” – 2 Corinthians 11:16-21

“The ancient prophets who preceded you and me spoke against many nations, always warning of war, famine and plague. So a prophet who foretells peace has the burden of proof on him to prove that God has really sent him.” (Jeremiah) 28:8-9

So you think we are all Republican shills — you’re half right — we will be Republican shills in the future.

My mother and I are finished with the democrat party.

Larse,
I don’t watch TV any more except Fox either. I only watch British films and series I get from Netflix. This election has turned many lives upside down. I now see that having toed the party line for over thirty years, since I first voted in 1972, that the Democrats are just as corrupt as Republicans, and that this year the only Party I trust is the Republican. What a laugh considering how corrupt they are. I’m never voting straight party lines again.

Larse,

During the cultural revolution in China, everything was so absolutely twisted that no one knew what was right, what was wrong. That students killed teachers were not wrong. That the Red Guards burned down your house was not wrong. That parents were sent to a re-educational camp thousands miles away from their children was not wrong.

There are many things so twisted now. It seems to me that right or wrong is only determined by whether you are an O people. For example, O people told you that the way Sarah Palin has been treated is not wrong, even if it is deadly wrong.

So I have to think that Gwen Ifill’s book will be saying that black politicians are doing the same thing as Obama in a whole different ways. Oh, I get it. Black politicians are going to run corrupted campaigns and making deals with shady characters in order to get them to finance their campaigns. Is that what her book is all about or what?

So will she be describing all the shady deals that Obama has engaged in his way to get his political seats? And will she be describing all the other black politicians imitating Obama doing? Well then that will be an interesting book.

Comment by Docelder | 2008-10-01 18:53:27

`Don’t expect Ifil to be replaced, I don’t know that we want her replaced, but do pump the story. Email news outlets and instead of attacking them for not covering it, ask them what is going on with this story, you are interested and have been looking for coverage. If McCain were playing it like Obama they would get something leaked that Palin may refuse to attend, then deny it. Anything to keep it in the press.

Comment by Matthew Weaver | 2008-10-01 18:55:51

One word: MONEY

Comment by MikeG | 2008-10-01 19:13:54

There are people who think Obama will lose, thus seriously cramping Ifil’s take. So If she brings the book out now, especially considering all the free publicity it’s been getting, she stands to make considerably more. Also if the book is pro-Obama and does indeed persuade people to vote for him, her chances increase of making even more money.

Comment by YES HRC | 2008-10-01 19:31:38

Mike you don’t understand publishing marketing. She wants to be the First One to release a book about The One on the symbolic Inauguration Day. It’s worth the risk to her. It is ALL about the money. She’ll make millions if this pans out for her.

Comment by Steve_in_KC | 2008-10-01 20:10:30

I think there is also this issue:
If she has any wish to maintain some semblance of “unbiased” newsreporter, someone who is not trying to influence news as it happens, then she can’t release the book now for the simple reason that it has the “appearance” of bias. This is especially true of a reporter for PBS, which receives money from the government. In fact, her TV contract would most likely forbid it.

Please don’t misconstrue these remarks to in any way be a defense of this deceitful “reporter” or her employers. They should all rot in the same hell as Halliburton execs.

This is biased and unfair. However, I believe Palin will do just fine anyway. The media has gone and lowered the expectations of her so darn far, all she has to do is speak in complete sentances and she’s exceeded expectations.

Biden unfortunately has had the bar raised so high, he’s going to have a tough time living up to it.

Comment by Docelder | 2008-10-01 18:58:00

The key will be to take control of the debate… and take the discourse away from the planned questions. Yes take the question… turn it into a dialogue that you want. Don’t worry if Ifill likes it or not… the more Biden gets mad the better. Palin can break him, I just know it.

Comment by MikeG | 2008-10-01 20:56:51

“take the discourse away from the planned questions”

Then when the moderator says “answer the question please” she can act all hurt, start crying, and say “you’re biased, boohoo, boohoo.” The bottom feeding 27% will feel sorry for Sarah and vote for her.

Sounds like a great plan — if only idiots were allowed to vote.

Comment by Soldier of Christ | 2008-10-01 19:36:49

When she is not told what to say, she does well. The only thing Sarah has to learn to say and don’t listen to the Republican party is to be “herself”. Like she did with HH radio interview. She was funny, smart and witty. If she doesn’t know the questions (and I am sure that this black woman has her quotes from the Obama’s camp as to what to say) she should just say ” Look, I am not familiar with that- and I am sure if I make it up- the liberal media will be bashing me tomorrow- so I will say to the audience “I don’t know the answer to that- maybe Mr. Biden who has been in the senate since I have been in kindergarten might know the answer. But…I am willing to learn as your Vice President if the people elect me…

That is the kind of things she should say and we find delightfully funny and more people will see the humor in her. Oh…I am sure that the liberal media will be spinning over and over this-but she warn the public- so it will make them look foolish.

Comment by Lisa | 2008-10-01 19:54:45

Ifill should excuse herself. She is ideologically biased and has monetary interest in the outcome of the election. That she did not excuse herself proved that how unethical and unprofessional she is. No wonder Hannity said that the journalists in this country are dead.

But, you don’t deny that Ifill will be biased against Palin. Imagine the screeching that would come from the left if any well known McCain shill was moderating debate. No matter what their reputation as a journalist is otherwise, if they were known to be rooting for McCain and it was known they would profit financially if McCain won, the left would scream bloody murder about it.

It is wrong to pretend she will be impartial. She is an idiot if she is capable of hiding her preference. Her behavior after Palin’s speech at the Republican convention demonstrated her complete lack of objectivity and decorum.

Call the Newshour and your local PBS affiliate. The Newshour is about the only remaining credible TV news program in the country. Ifill is a really good journalist – but for her to moderate the debate is horrible. She will tarnish her own well-earned reputation and that of the Newshour, public television, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, funded by taxpayers.

This is a shame.

Comment by POdVet | 2008-10-01 19:11:35

I disagree with you. If you start peeling back the layers of PBS you will find people like George Soros and Bill Moyers and foundations like the Joyce Foundation and The Benton Foundation.

As for Gwen Ifill, her ugly grimaces and eye rolling when Palin or McCain are mentioned is offensive.

“True believers in the god of the market would leave us to the ruthless cruelty of unfettered monopolistic capital where even the law of the jungle breaks down.”

– Bill Moyers, Keynote speech to the Environmental Grantmakers Association, October 16, 2001
Bill Moyers:
Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)

The money, the message, and the messenger. Conflict of interest?

Bill Moyers, his son John, and their moneyed sidekicks, the Schumann brothers, hate the free market with intemperate ferocity, as the quote above suggests.

Who Funds the Progressive Media?

Initially, this article will introduce the work of the Benton Foundation, a liberal foundation that has played a pioneering and catalysing role in supporting progressive media ventures.
Critiques of liberal philanthropy are nothing new: indeed such criticisms have regularly surfaced ever since liberal foundations were created in the early twentieth century. In the past few years, however, the number of critical scholars and activists writing about practices of liberal foundations has grown rapidly, and there is now a blossoming literature showing the funding strategies of these highly influential philanthropists are antidemocratic and manipulative.
The Benton Foundation is currently chaired by William Benton’s son, Charles Benton, who like his father maintains close ties to a number of less than progressive individuals, not least through his position on the Board of Trustees of The American Assembly. Furthermore, he is a member of the international founding committee of The Real News and a trustee of the Education Development Center. Today the Center has a staff of over 500 people and a budget in excess of $90 million. Its funding comes from USAID and liberal philanthropic organizations such as the Ford Foundation, the Gates Foundation, and
George Soros’ Open Society Institute. [13]
The Benton Foundation is also well represented on the IWT founding committee, with Gloria Tristani, Charles Benton and Mark Lloyd (former general counsel to the Benton Foundation now a senior fellow at the George Soros-linked Center for American Progress).

Given that Ford and Benton Foundations have extensive funding and personal ties in so many projects of progressive social change it is hardly surprising that most of the representatives of IWT’s founding committee also work for non-profit groups and projects that are funded by the Ford Foundation. However, this almost ‘natural’ state of affairs should give us pause.
From the book The Shock Doctrine, “the Ford Foundation was the “leading source of funding for the dissemination of the Chicago School ideology throughout Latin America”.
“[Ford-funded institutions played a] …central role in the overthrow of Chile’s democracy, and its former students… appl[ied] their US education in a context of shocking brutality. Making matters more complicated for the foundation, this was the second time in just a few years that its protégés had chosen a violent route to power, the first case being the Berkeley Mafia’s meteoric rise to power in Indonesia after Suharto’s bloody [1965-66] coup.” [24]
Those of us who take it as granted that the United States is a plutocracy not a democracy, find in this state of affairs their belief confirmed that the richest have access to society’s financial and political resources, and that they can engage in large-scale social engineering to make sure civil society is shaped in a manner compatible with their own elite interests. However, even activists, researchers and theorists who believe the United States is (or at least should be) a country of pluralism and representative democracy should be concerned about the amount of money flowing from these liberal foundations and begin documenting its effects on the development of the American progressive mediascape.

As if we would trust Ifill to be nonpartisan. It’s like saying Obama is a different kind of politician. (Hope! Change!)

McCain and Palin don’t seem to concerned about it. Maybe something’s up.

Comment by Matthew Weaver | 2008-10-01 19:11:52

Maybe they think this will force Ifill to be excruciatingly fair in the debate or even hostile to Biden? It does take the spotlight off Palin and if there are any gotchas, they can lay blame on the moderator’s provable bias.

Comment by YES HRC | 2008-10-01 19:23:24

Yes, maybe this newest stunt will bite them. They haven’t shown great judgment so far. Why start now? There has to be a breaking point when people finally say No Way.

Comment by lark | 2008-10-01 19:26:26

In other words, Mathew, the debate will not be able to be rated and it will be a draw regardless of what either of them say. Which works in Obama’s favor since he is ahead now. Except regardless, Palin will be blamed for everything.

Maybe it’s good she’s not removed, all eyes will be upon her and she’ll try to appear neutral.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-10-01 20:49:01

True. Ifill’s defense was that a white reporter wouldn’t be asked the same things. If any of the other moderators had books sales hinging on a favorable outcome for a particular candidate she may have a point. But they don’t.

Comment by John Smith | 2008-10-01 20:09:17

Maybe they should make it an even trillion. This way you won’t have to carry around any change.

Comment by Diana | 2008-10-01 21:54:45

Now think about if they divided that money between the 300 million of us. How that would boost the economy and banking. The childrens could go in an account till they graduate to send them to school. Those in school or recent graduates could pay off student loans. For their education. Married couples could pay off their homes, bills, etc. Young adults could use it to start businesses…all that money WOULD go back into the economy, with a HUGE boost to the economy, instead of into a bunch of criminals pockets.

Her book’s cover image will be taken during the debate and it will show Gwen smiling calmly in the background and Sarah Palin pulling her hair and screaming to her an expletive, while Biden laughs his ass off.

Yes and the Daily Kooks implications of of rape, incest, and child abuse were so above par.

No one was ever called stupid or racist. No pro-Obama site ever called non-supporters idiots or compared Obama to the Founding Fathers. The Founding Fathers who would have been put to death had they failed.

The progressives/liberals, many of them “feminists” that support Obama, couldn’t understand why Palin didn’t just stay home.

No Obama supporters spread rumors that Trig was Palin’s daughter’s baby and Palin wore a pregancy suit.

Obama supporters said that McCain wasn’t tortured enough and that he got “special treatment”. Does special treatment include beatings and multiple broken bones? Heck, if McCain wanted special treatment all he had to do was read the prepared propaganda and go home.

But we’re the rude conspiracy theorists?

Okie dokie.

Comment by POdVet | 2008-10-01 19:18:02

A liaison is simply a contact person in the press corps. He does not stand to receive a significant financial gain by McCain winning. Ifill’s book sales will be directly affected by the outcome, so she HAS significant financial interests at stake.

Comment by Larry | 2008-10-01 19:19:48

Who are you kidding? ALL TV anchors stand to gain a LOT from McCain winning – hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax breaks.

Comment by POdVet | 2008-10-01 19:26:56

Dude get a clue. Network news anchors can deduct so many things the tax increase or even a decrease would have minimal effect. That $5000 lunch with someone they are interviewing is deductible! They need a new suit…deductible…And thats not even considering the fact that they know all the loopholes and how to re-arrange assets so they end up getting credits for not planting crops on the ranches they own etc etc. This isn’t a news flash, it’s been known and reported about for years.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-10-01 21:48:34

If the book isn’t about Obama then why is he mentioned at all in the title?

Why isn’t the title “A History of AA Politicians”?

It’s because Ifill is invoking Obama to increase book sales.

Comment by Scout | 2008-10-02 01:03:11

The title of the book is:

The Breakthrough: Race and Politics in the Age of Obama.

Kind-of sounds like it’s about Obama.

Kind-of sounds like it’s pro-Obama, after all, according to Gwen, now he’s got his own ‘age’.

Conflict of interest, plain as day.

Comment by street_parade | 2008-10-01 21:29:48

Why did Ifill NOT tell the CPD about the book? Ifill, like almost ALL of the DC press corps, sits behind a desk in Washington and reads what’s on a teleprompter (like someone else we know). To call her, or any of the useless press corps a journalist is an insult to those who really are/were.

The British have it right, in the UK she’d be called a ‘news reader’. Which would be correct.

Have you read his book “All Too Human”
If not, please do so. I highly recommend it.
It does not make the Clinton’s look too pretty.

I read that book and many many other books about the Clintons written by their friends and enemies.

Now…explain to me what leads you to believe that George Stephenopoulos ‘ relationship with the Clinton’s (especially HRC) is the same as Ms Ifill’s relationship with Sen Obama?

After having read Stephenopoulos’ book, if I were HRC, I would have been VERY nervous being involved in anything that Stephanopoulos was moderating.

P.S I respect the guy’s intelligence and passion even though I disagree with him on some issues.

Did you watch the town hall interview Hillary did with him before the IN and NC primary? He was on her like a tiny rabid dog — he was so rude and tried to play gotcha on every single question — she made him look like the little toad he is, however.

WHAT ABOUT THE FACT THAT HE WAS SAYING ‘THIS CONTEST IS OVER’ THE MORNING OF THE WEST VA. PRIMARY — WHEN PEOPLE WERE JUST GOING TO THE POLLS AND VOTING?

If you don’t call that electioneering on behalf of Obama, then you are in deep, deep denial.

The primary was over the day Obama won Wisconsin and Hawaii. The rest was a self-inflicted slow death of the Clinton campaign.

Complete and utter bull.

Hillary won the popular vote overall in the primary. But before that, the DNC CHEATED and gave Obama’s undeserving ass delegates that HE DIDN’T WIN in Florida and Michigan. Obama did NOT have a McCain victory. He did NOT win the vast majority of the votes overall during the primary like McCain did. The Democrat primary was CLOSE. The ENTIRE WORLD saw how close the Dem primary was. So stop trying to rewrite history.

Obama couldn’t win the primary fair and square. So he relied on the cheating DNC and lying, scheming media to get the nomination. And it’s NOT the first time Obama’s cheated to win an election either. Just ask Alice Palmer.

Comment by Alex | 2008-10-02 11:22:15

Obama’s US senate career:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_career_of_Barack_Obama

some highlights:

Obama successfully introduced two initiatives bearing his name. “Lugar-Obama” expands the Nunn-Lugar cooperative threat reduction concept to conventional weapons, including shoulder-fired missiles and anti-personnel mines.

The “Coburn-Obama Transparency Act” provides for the web site USAspending.gov, managed by the Office of Management and Budget. The site lists all organizations receiving Federal funds from 2007 onward and provides breakdowns by the agency allocating the funds, the dollar amount given, and the purpose of the grant or contract.

As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Obama made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. In August 2005, he traveled to Russia, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan. The trip focused on strategies to control the world’s supply of conventional weapons, biological weapons, and weapons of mass destruction as a first defense against potential terrorist attacks.

Obama worked with Russ Feingold (D–WI) to eliminate gifts of travel on corporate jets by lobbyists to members of Congress and require disclosure of bundled campaign contributions under the “Honest Leadership and Open Government Act,” which was signed into law in September 2007.

Obama joined Chuck Hagel (R-NE) in introducing legislation to reduce risks of nuclear terrorism. A provision from the Obama-Hagel bill was passed by Congress in December 2007 as an amendment to the State-Foreign Operations appropriations bill.

In this 110th congress, Obama has sponsored 70 Bills and co-sponsored 404 bills of which 8 have passed vs. John Mccain who has sponsored only 22 bills and co-sponsored 133 of which 7 have passed.

http://www.opencongress.org/person/show/400629_barack_obama

Obama’s Illinois senate career:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois_Senate_career_of_Barack_Obama

Throughout Obama’s state senate career he has sponsored or co-sponsored over 800 pieces of legislation.

some highlights:

Obama helped pass a sweeping law that banned most gifts from lobbyists and personal use of campaign funds by state legislators.

During his first years as a state senator, Obama was a co-sponsor of a bill which re-structured the Illinois welfare program into the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. He was also involved in various pieces of legislation which established a $100 million Earned Income Tax Credit for working families, increased child care subsidies for low-income families, and required advance notice before mass layoffs and plant closings.

He sponsored successful efforts to expand children’s health care, create a plan to provide equal health care access for all Illinois residents, and create a “Hospital Report Card” system, and worker’s rights laws that protected whistleblowers, domestic violence victims, equal pay for women, and overtime pay. His most public accomplishment was a bill requiring police to videotape interrogations and confessions in potential death penalty cases. Obama was willing to listen to Republicans and police organizations and negotiate compromises to get the law passed. That helped him develop a reputation as a pragmatist able to work with various sides of an issue. Obama also led the passage of a law to monitor racial profiling by requiring police to record the race of drivers they stopped.

Based on his amazing accomplishments and ability to work across the isle in a bi-partisan and pragmattic fashion, I would give him a VERY HIGH RATING as a legislator for the people.

‘nuff said…

Maybe you should have Googled Obama and read about the crimes he will be indicted on in the Chicago newspapers. Do some research using sources other than those officially approved by the anointed one and his information scrubbing crew. Or simply ask yourself what kind of scumbag would stand back and say NOTHING! When his cousin Odingo had his henchmen go out and commit rape and murder until the lawfully elected President of Kenya was forced to name him Prime Minister and share power! If you know nothing else about Obama, that undeniable FACT should be enough to turn any conscionable human being away from Barack Obama!

Get some help there man. Your hatred of the Governor of Alaska has turned you into a raving lunatic.

Gov. Palin is a street-smart, tough, and popular Governor. She has accomplished some big things during her tenure – natural gas pipeline through Canada, new royalty agreements with oil companies and getting some corrupt politicians out of office.

She is also from a small town, is a truly committed Christian, when to a state university and has an Alaskan accent. She is not a towering intellect, neither was Reagan. People like you care about that, most people don’t. That’s just the way it is, sorry ’bout that.

So another biased reporter whose sole purpose for writing a book is an essentializing politics of race will moderate the debate. Why am I not surprised? After all, the American public must be reminded of Biden’s status as surrogate for someone who claims African-American ancestry during the Vice Presidential debate. For if they were not, many would actually listen to Palin. And we cannot possibly have that. Indeed, Obama will only win if the American public remains duped by a racialized cult of personality that is devoid of knowledge, substance and fact.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-10-01 22:13:51

Obama’s father : Kenyan born citizen.

Obama’s mother: White American.

Obama’s Stepfather: Indonesian citizen. Obama attended school in Indonesia using his stepfather’s last name. That implies a legal relationship.

I’m confused. Which do we hate Obama for? Because his father was a native born African national that was not US born (not an AA) or because his mother was white? Or because Obama was adopted by an Indonesian national?

Obama was not born of two American parents. Period.

But let’s not talk about that.

Why do you think Obama voted for FISA when he promised to filibuster it and vote against it? He did neither.

When Hillary voted NO on FISA it wasn’t taken as a vote that Dems wanted. It was decried, by Obama supporters, as an attempt embarrass him.

Their worries about our Constitutional rights? That meant nothing if something made Obama “look bad”.

If Obama gets the WH you’ll see this same sort of logic. Who cares about the Constitution? Obama said so or – you’re trying to make Obama look bad you racists you. Even if the person objecting is non-white.

This type of information needs to be made public.

Does anyone know the poll worker /observer who was turned away?

Has she filed a complaint with the proper authorities?

Has she notified the local media of what happened?

Is this also going on in the other ‘vote early states?” where independent observers are being turned away?

BTW If this info was available, in July and August as you claim it, it was available as well to the Debate Commission.

Personal profit, from a book with the title that has ONE candidate’s name in it, shows a bias.

If Ifill is unbiased why write a book now? She could have written the same book after Nov 4th.

Ifill has made numerous public statements in favor of Obama. A real journalist would have refrained from speaking or spoken about the pluses and minuses of both campaigns. That’s journalism.

Comment by Matthew Weaver | 2008-10-01 19:42:29

Yes, there were notes about the book in Time and elsewhere, but not substantive detail, nor until now, was the release date announced to be on Inauguration Day.

Whether the book was secret or not, and it was at worst an open secret that MSM didn’t discuss much, does it not suggest a conflict of interest to you?

If Obama loses, her book has no value and timing for January 20th is foolish. If he wins, the topic and timing is great and will earn her a lot of money.

Comment by Larry | 2008-10-01 19:44:58

And again, George Stephanopolous moderated a debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Does that not suggest a conflict of interest to you?

Politics and the Media are so incestuous at this point, it would be impossible to find a moderator with no objections whatsoever from either campaign.

The McCain campaign isn’t complaining.

Why are you?

Oh, I guess you might have seen the polls today.

UH OH.

Comment by ACT | 2008-10-01 20:01:25

The issue is not biais. That is something we have all come to accept and expect. (Regretfully)

The issue is a conflict of interest – as in financial benefit based on outcome. Stephanopolous had no future financial gain

Ifill has a book contract and will be enriched with an Obama victory!

Conflict of Interst – not – Biais

I applaud McCain for giving her the benefit of the doubt.

If a judge were ruling in a case against you and would financially benefit based on their decision – I doubt you would be so classy.

Comment by Lisa | 2008-10-01 20:29:01

ACT,

I absolutely agree with you.

In a Court, if the judge has ANY connections to any one in any party of a law suit, the judge must excuse himself/herself. If not, a party may be negatively affected can move to disqualify the judge.

The above rule is restrictively followed because fair play is important. The same principle should apply to the VP debate. That Ms. Ifill will not be fair is a legitimate concern. The only way to overcome this concern is to remove her. In this entire country, Ifill is the only qualified moderator? Why we can not have someone else?

See my post above — Stephanopoulos derides Hillary at every turn — in their town hall meeting, on his program…

the only difference in that ABC debate with that your messiah actually had to answer some real questions for a change instead of the typical pillow fluffing treatment he got every other time.

He was humiliated because he did poorly and the ‘bots went wild and flooded ABC with complaints — so Gibson and Stephanopoulos got the message real quick — no more fairness — better go back to drinking the Obama koolaid.

Comment by Lisa | 2008-10-01 20:33:19

Acaha,

There is a big difference. One is a debate held by ABC, which has openly known bias. Another is held by presidential debate commit, which should be non-biased.

Comment by athy | 2008-10-01 21:47:15

Larry- read above in thread where bloggers comment about relationship between Stephenopoulos & the Clintons.

No conflict of interest there- as a matter of fact, if I were HRC I would have been VERY nervous about being asked questions by Stephenopoulos in a debate.

Of course, it is true that the fact Ms.Ifill has written a book about Senator Obama, like almost all information, is discoverable at some level. But as in withholding material information from the judge, the fault for non-disclosure inures to the person who failed to disclose, and not to the person who, through some other means, however mundane or extraordinary, could have searched for and found the information, on her own.

Comment by Alex | 2008-10-01 20:59:56

Maybe they can have an energy question in the debate. According to McCain, Palin may be “the nation’s leading expert on energy.” She says Alaska provides 20% of the US energy, something nobody else would know cuz it’s really 3.5%.

Comment by John Smith | 2008-10-01 19:56:11

She was talking about US production and when you add NG in there it does make up 20% and even more once the pipeline comes online that she negotiated. So before you start talking you should get your facts straight.

Comment by MikeG | 2008-10-01 20:34:43

From Factcheck.org
“Palin claims Alaska “produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy.” That’s not true.

Alaska did produce 14 percent of all the oil from U.S. wells last year, but that’s a far cry from all the “energy” produced in the U.S.

Alaska’s share of domestic energy production was 3.5 percent, according to the official figures kept by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

And if by “supply” Palin meant all the energy consumed in the U.S., and not just produced here, then Alaska’s production accounted for only 2.4 percent.”

Comment by Alex | 2008-10-01 21:02:28

COURIC: Can you think of any?

PALIN: Well, I could think of — of any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. And what is the right answer? Suppose she chose a couple of rulings… just for fun pick them yourself. Then think what you would do with the answer… starting with “so now I guess being mayor of Wasilla makes her qualified to be on the Supreme Court?”. There is no good answer to a hostile media. Perhaps appearing to not have a reply is a strategy. It is probably no worse than answering. I would have hoped she would just say… that is a loaded question and you know it. Palin’s job is not going to be working “with” McCain. They are a “team”. Don’t give me the “heartbeat away” bit. That is how I know somebody is a “bot” they have memorized the collective mantra emanating from “The One” himself. Get real. McCain will be with us.

Comment by jbjd | 2008-10-01 20:22:34

I thought her answer was appropriate, given her conservative bent. That is, the SCOTUS decisions with which she would have a problem are those that upheld federal authority over what she considers to be state issues. Like Roe v. Wade. (On the other hand, the first case I thought of was Plessy v. Ferguson. But then, I went to law school.)

Comment by athy | 2008-10-01 22:04:13

Larry,
I have listened to many McCain & Palin interviews.
What Gov Palin is saying is that she believes that there are certain decisions/powers left to the states and certain decisions/powers left to the Federal govt as per the Constitution.
She has no intention of changing ‘the law of the land as it reads today’.

The USA is a REPUBLIC. We are a group of states with certain rights granted to us by the Constitution to operate on a local level as per the will of the people of each state.

On certain issues, the Federal law takes precedence over any state laws.

How tough is that to understand?

Gov Palin is no constitutional lawyer but look at Sen Obama who is a constitutional lawyer.

Look what he did with the FISA vote.

Yes, this constitutional lawyer has let it be known that the US constitution and our Bill of Rights are up for negotiation-all in the name of political expediency.

Ifill has responded to questions about her conflict of interest. She says she hasn’t written the chapter on Obama yet. And get this quintessential Obama response:

Ifill questions why people assume that her book will be favorable toward Obama.

“Do you think they made the same assumptions about Lou Cannon (who is white) when he wrote his book about Reagan?” said Ifill, who is black. Asked if there were racial motives at play, she said, “I don’t know what it is. I find it curious.”

The title of the book gives it all away. ‘Age of Obama’ is heavily laced with Kool-Aid.

Comment by mimi | 2008-10-01 21:30:29

Absolutely, the title says it all.

Sort of like saying the Age of Aristotle.

It’s a lofty statement about a candidate who cheated his way to become the nominee and who has done NOTHING for the AA community.

Comment by Zum Wilden Hirsch | 2008-10-01 20:29:05

In its online description of the book, Doubleday says that Ifill “surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power.”

Reminds me of that scene in Thelma and Louise where Brad Pitt asks Harvey Keitel how the police can be so sure he stole the money. LOL

But how – how do you know I’m going to be positive in my book about the great Obama? And actually he’s not in all of the final chapter – he’s only in the last two sentences in the final paragraph!

Comment by baby-puppy | 2008-10-01 20:39:17

I have DISH TV until tomm. and here in the Detroit area channel 73 states clearly the programming has been purchased by “Tribune Media;” however when I called DISH Network I was very rudely told anyone can purchase a station. Dominic Lawson: Why should anyone trust Joe Biden?
The Democrats’ candidate for VP doesn’t deserve to be called a sage
Tuesday, 30 September 2008

Joseph Robinette Biden – known to all as “Joe” – was once the most talked about American politician in Britain. Unfortunately for the senior Delaware Senator, all the talk was accompanied by incredulous laughter. As part of his Presidential campaign 20 years ago, he lifted verbatim and without attribution Neil Kinnock’s celebrated remarks: “Why am I the first Kinnock in a thousand generations to be able to get to a University … was it because all our predecessors were thick, those people who could work eight hours underground and then come up to play football?” Biden told an audience at an Iowa fairground: “I started thinking as I was coming over here, why is it that Joe Biden’s the first in his family ever to go to University … is it because our fathers and mothers were not bright… who worked in the coal mines of Northeast Pennsylvania and would come up after 12 hours and play football?”

Note the overt claim to spontaneity at the outset of the plagiarism; but it wasn’t just that which left his run for the Presidency buried under an avalanche of ridicule. It rapidly emerged that Biden was not the first member of his family to go to university, and that the closest any ancestral Bidens came to working underground was a grandfather who was a mining engineer – and during the campaign Biden also told a number of gratuitous untruths about his own academic record.

Comment by Ani | 2008-10-01 20:21:46

Stay tuned for more on Biden later on NoQ.

Comment by Docelder | 2008-10-01 20:29:06

Comment by street_parade | 2008-10-01 22:53:19

It gets worse, in 2007 he said that his wife and daughter were killed by a guy ‘who allegedly drank his lunch’.

NOT TRUE! He defamed the memory of the driver, who was haunted by that accident. The man was NOT drunk, there was no evidence supporting Biden’s statement.

An ethical journalist would have excused herself for conflict of interest but since there are no ethics anymore and we have reached “The Age of Aquar..oh I mean “The Age of Obama”, the nirvana, the utopia of the post modern intellectuals who use their higher education to employ young impressionable teenagers and college students, paying them 8.00/hr(that’s in Virginia at least)to spread the propaganda and then leave them with broken promises after it’s over. Palin could have Mother Teresa, God, Ghandi, and Jesus standing next to her supporting her and it wouldn’t amount to anything with the media–they’re out for blood. One wondes what the helkl is so threatening about her to these people. Did anyone read Taibbi’s piece in Rolling Stone–it’s off the charts–he not only shows hatred, disgust and contempt for Palin, he totally denigrates the American working classes trying to put food on the table, This 30 something nobody,Gonzo wannabe whose father works for NBC and who has never suffered a day in his life and who got his job because of his GE employed father–read “The Devils” by Dostoevsky, he was writing about this generation of bored wannabe revolutionists in the 19th century–sons and daughters of the privileged class who have nothing better to do but rebel with the likes of an amoral, dysfunctional punk like Obama.

Comment by jbjd | 2008-10-01 20:58:53

No; an ethical journalist would have recognized there is a potential conflict of interest and disclosed this to the parties, leaving the decision as to whether she should continue in her role of moderator, up to them. (However, some professionals, in similar situations, are required either by law or license, to recuse themselves.)

Comment by Kelvin Hearts PUMAs | 2008-10-01 20:38:58

That’s why you PUMAs can’t win. You never want to admit that you are wrong or give any credit to those who succeed. You lay blame on everyone and everything for your failures. Obama won the primary. There was no fix in. McCain is losing because he’s a lame duck candidate who makes bad decisions and belongs to the dreadful republican party. The media is not helping Obama, but McCain’s not helping himself with them. You can’t start a feud with the media and expect to win. Obama’s been cool, calm and collected, unlike McCain. America saw him keep his head about himself during this financial crisis while McCain was trying his best to become the story. His gamble did not pay off. This is costing McCain in the key battleground states and Obama’s pulled ahead in NC, NV, VA and most importantly FLA and OH. Stop playing the blame game and start looking a little harder at your candidates. McCain is war hero and a experienced politician, but he’s a lousy campaigner. Palin has executive experience but has abused the power of her office thereby betraying the public trust of the citizens of Wasilla and Alaska. Hillary just showed up expecting to win the Dem primary and didn’t work as hard as she needed to to win. By the time she got her head in the game, it was too late. She had no respect for any of her opponents, especially Obama. If Palin falls on her face tomorrow night, it won’t be because Gwen Ifill supposedly in the tank. It’s because she’s simply not ready for prime time. You’re basically admitting defeat by bringing up that the fix is in. Have some faith. She just might do well. So please behave like adults and stop blaming the world when things are not going your way.

Comment by Alex | 2008-10-01 21:17:09

Bravo! Well said.

Personally I think Palin will look sharp at times and at other times she will look inadequate. I think there is a significant chance for some gaffes by both her AND Biden.

I think the overall impression taken from the debate will be that:
- Ifill was impartial, fair, and professional.

- Palin is obviously not ready for primetime.

This will reflect negatively on mccain’s judgement in choosing her as his VP.

Think there’s any regret in the mccain campaign for not choosing Romney; especially in light of the financial crisis?

Comment by Lindsy | 2008-10-01 21:18:41

At least McCain makes actual decisions. Obama follows around the party leaders and then takes all the credit.

And you clearly are not paying attention or watching the same news as the rest of America if you don’t believe that the media is totally biased for Barack Obama. A recent poll showed something like 60% of all Americans believe that the media is biased towards Obama and are trying to help him win the election.

Clinton lost the primaries because she lost the cacuses which were set up to make sure Obama won. The DNC rigged the votes at the convention as well. There have been tons of articles and convention delegates come forward about this.

If Obama becomes President it will be the greatest farce in the history of our country.

Comment by Docelder | 2008-10-01 20:49:07

Being “for” Obama is not the problem… as everybody should be for one or the other. But the problem is the book talking of an “age of Obama”. The title of the book implies impartiality. Just the perception of impartiality will alter the outcome. The purpose of these debates is to help voters get to know these candidates. It is not so that voters get to know Ms. Ifill, and it is not so that voters know all about her upcoming book. Unfortunately, it is too late ane a conflict exists. The debate will be changed if Ifill presides. The price for her stepping aside is the lesser of the two prices that would be paid. Ifill should step aside and yield to Lehrer. Lehrer did a fine job and has been praised for doing so.

Comment by pd | 2008-10-01 20:53:55

Yes, Ifill has a book coming out about minority politicians, which was public knowledge two weeks before the McCain camp agreed to the terms.

Either:
A) McCain’s camp has to admit to another failure at vetting.
B) They knew they could spin this issue just days before the debate to use as an excuse for anything percieved as
an attack on Palin…..very Rovian (and Schmidt being his protege, not hard to see)
C) How is this debate more tilted than Saddleback? Obama went into the Right’s house.

Also, the next Presidential debate will be moderated by Tom Brokaw, who has repeatedly made comments and quoted old data to support McCain, recently at the end of the last Meet the Press show. And he was also instrumental in having Chris Mattews and Olberman removed from their anchor posts.

So let’s get on the same page here, Palin can field dress a moose, but can’t handle a journalist.

Comment by xax | 2008-10-01 21:16:20

Ok in order for something to be public knowledge the public has to know. And the public didn’t know until now.

It must be that Obama magic. You know, the magic that makes people trash disabled infants, little girls, teenagers, women, gays, and everyone that doesn’t agree with Obama and his supporters.

Funny how none of Obama’s “we’re not the racists” supporters have shown zero concern for the blacks in public housing that Obama ignored or the dead inner city black children that were victims of out of control street violence in Chicago that Obama also managed to ignore.

But none of that matters. Cuz Obama will heal us all. As soon as he gets around to it.

Why doesn’t Palin bring McCain along to hold her hand, like that interview with Katie Couric.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-10-01 21:13:22

Because she’s a woman silly. If a man shows up to an interview with a supporter the supporter is doing his job.

If it’s a woman she needs hand holding.

See how easy sexism is?

The bias interview with Couric, where is it that anyone has ever seen a interviewer asking a question getting a response and then saying can you give me another answer.

What kind of carp is that Palin gives and answer and several time Couric wanted another line, that is plain gotcha tactics, if I don’t get you on the first round I will get you on the second.

Palin was asking about the supreme court she gave an answer Roe vs Wade, Couric wants another ruling geez you just got one why another.

Palin was asked what Mc Cain ever did name one she did she talked about the Fannie Mac stuff he brought to their attention, Couric wanted something else and so it went all through the interview to make Palin look like she is a air head and knows nothing.

I tell you the injustice some of these media people are doing I only hope if Obama wins this election and he gets in there and things begin to get bad they don’t hide, I want all of them to show their faces daily and stand the wrath of the public when people expectations start to diminish.

I just read an AP article where the Gwen hack defends herself by saying she’s not even written the chapter on Obama yet.

As if that matters! “The era of Obama” is written in the TITLE.

Well, if NPR has that much contempt for us, we need to give a little of their hatin’ back at ‘em.

Just cuz Obama is in the title of the book it has nothing to do with him.

Why would you think that?

Signed.

I would like to think that no one absolutly no one is going to get away with anything. So if Gwen Ifill tries anything shitty – Sara will lace it to her.
