Time for Action: Ifill Must Withdraw for Conflict of Interest [Update x2]

The failure to remove Gwen Ifill as moderator tonight is a travesty and embarrassment to the Commission on Presidential Debate’s mantra of “professional and nonpartisan“. Gwen Ifill has written a book, titled “Age of Obama” that she and her publisher are now promoting for release on Inauguration Day! She has a clear bias for Obama and stands to personally, professionally, and financially profit from his successful election as president. Thus, tonight, it is in her interest to see that Governor Sarah Palin does not do well, or is even embarrassed.
It cannot be understated that the moderator of the debate has control over the debate questions, follow-ups, and discussion. The moderator can overtly or subtly make a winner and a loser. Ifill’s bias and conflict of interest are so great and so obvious that any result tonight will be suspect. It is unfair to either candidate, to the parties, and to the American people that she continue as moderator. Gwen Ifill claims to be a journalist but has failed to honor one of its most sacred principles: impartiality.
Since, despite her bias and conflict of interest, Gwen Ifill refuses to step aside and allow for an impartial moderator to host tonight’s debate, it is up to us, the American people, to voice strong protest to force her replacement as moderator.

- “Despite the protestations of her colleagues that she will be fair, Ifill has appeared on numerous radio and TV talk shows over the past several months to cash in on her access to the Obama campaign. Conflict of Interest
- Gwen Ifill has written a book lauding Barack Obama. While she hasn’t named him “The One” as has her friend and colleague Oprah, Ms. Ifill has titled her book the “Age of Obama”. In promotion material The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama is described as “shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign.”
- Here is Ms. Ifill in a video advertisement for the book:
- Ms. Ifill and publisher Random House have timed release for “Age of Obama” on January 20, 2009. Inauguration Day for the country’s next president.
Obama Cult Defense
Ms. Ifill has defended herself in a manner that speaks well of her Kool-Aid drinking Obama Cult:
- Questioned recently about her biases, Ifill is quoted by the Washington Post saying, “no one’s ever assumed a white reporter can’t cover a white candidate.”
- “Ifill questions why people assume that her book will be favorable toward Obama. ‘Do you think they made the same assumptions about Lou Cannon (who is white) when he wrote his book about Reagan?’ said Ifill, who is black. A sked if there were racial motives at play, she said, ‘I don’t know what it is. I find it curious.’”—David Bauder, VP debate moderator’s impartiality questioned.
- Ifill disingenuously observed when asked about the debate, that “I’m not running for anything.”
- Anne Belle, spokeperson for Ifill’s PBS program, “The NewsHour”, said “The book has been a known factor for months, so I’m not sure what the big deal is.”
A Few Notes
The news on Ms. Ifill’s bias and conflict of interest have been sparse. While the book was not a secret, it was not well known and, as Ms. Ifill now admits, she did not disclose it and her conflict of interest to the debate commission. It is surprising that Senator McCain’s campaign did not pick up on Ms. Ifill’s book and conflict of interest earlier, claiming now to have not known about it. As well, the media is complicit by either ignoring the conflict of interest or not inquisitive enough to put two-and-two together when the information is right in front of them.
- One of the earliest mentions of Ms. Ifill’s book was on July 21.
- Gwen Ifill herself wrote about her upcoming book in Time on August 21
- The book was referenced as a footnote on September 3rd in a Washington Post article, “Ifill is working on a book called ‘Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama’. She focuses on the Democratic nominee. …”
- Although not a secret, until this week there no major news articles on the debate disclosed Ifill’s bias and clear conflict of interest.
- The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Ms. Ifill’s moderation of the vice-presidential debate on September 17.
- Ms. Ifill now acknowledges not telling the Commission about her book, its slant, or about the timing of the release on Inauguration Day. NPR’s Mara Liasson, who spoke with Fox News’s Brit Hume Wednesday evening, noted that Gwen Ifill has stated that she did not tell the Commission on Presidential Debates about her book.
- Greta Van Susteren reported Wednesday morning at Fox News that “the McCain campaign did NOT know about Gwen Ifill’s book.”
- Senator McCain also observed in a Wednesday afternoon FOX News interview that Ifill’s book was “not helpful” and ill-timed. He did add that he trusted her to be professional.—Politico
- Governor Palin, for her part, said that she was “not gonna let it be a concern.”
- The MSM is complicit in ignoring Ms. Ifill’s bias and conflict of interest. A survey of news reports find little mention of her book, its content, or timing of its release.
- Michelle Malkin has been out front leading media reports and commentary against Gwen Ifill. her latest writing in today’s New York Post is “Impartial? VP-Debate Host Pens Book Lauding Obama.
- Karl Rove was quite direct Wednesday evening on FOX News: “She [Ifill] has a problem, the debate commission has a problem… this is appalling.”
- Juan Williams of NPR and FOX News said:
- The Commission has not made any comment on the matter.

Time for Action
Why would anyone think Gwen Ifill can be unbiased in questioning the two VP candidates as she has a clear personal, professional, and financial stake in seeing that Biden does well and that Obama wins in November?
Ms. Ifill has bias and conflict of interest so clear and obvious that her journalistic instincts should to scream out to her that she is not and cannot be impartial. It is a shame that she risks destroying her well-earned reputation in such a foolish manner.
As Ms. Ifill will not recuse herself and withdrawal as moderator of tonight’s debate, it is up to the American people to call upon the Commission on Presidential Debates and their sponsors to replace her with someone who can act impartially. It is a matter of the gravest importance as the viewers of the debate are ultimately charged with voting for our nation’s next president and vice-president. A biased moderator discredits the debate and gains undo influence in the election process.

I already addressed this yesterday.
Every single major news anchor who would be possibly up to moderate one of three Presidential races makes greater than $250,000 – most substantially more. Thus, for every single of these news anchors, they stand to benefit financially from a McCain Presidency, just as you claim Ifill would benefit from an Obama.
Yet I do not see you assuming that every one of these anchors is in the bag for McCain. Because people don’t necessarily vote on their wallets. I’ve been voting against my wallet, for Democratic Presidential candidates who will tax me more, for my entire life.
So please, if you want to claim that Ifill is “in the bag for Obama,” you need to substantiate this claim with evidence, other than potential FINANCIAL gain. Unless you want to begin to state that every single person who makes over $250,000 is in the bag for McCain.
I have listened to Ifill for years, and watched her a substantial amount this election season. I haven’t heard her make any anti-McCain, pro-Obama comments – if any of you watched her (which you have already you stated that you don’t since you boycott ALL MSM), I think you would find that she has been about as even-handed a journalist as there has been to come by this election season.
Thus, I cannot find a reason you’d be claiming that she has a conflict of interest, other than assuming that she is in the bag for Obama because she is black. Her book, if you read the synopsis, is a study of post-Civil Rights black leaders – NOT a puff piece on Obama.
Also, please explain to me how we get from Gwenn Ifill to the “why not just have Donna Brazille moderate” comments which have been excessively repeated in posts regarding this topic on this website for the past two days. How is this NOT saying, one black woman is the same as the other.

I’m sure she has been careful to keep her comments restricted to only the closest of immediate friends and family and being a professional, I’m sure she chooses her words carefully. But I’m sure they all know she agrees.
By everyone’s admission, especially in the AA community, this has been a long awaited dream, how can she actually believe that she can detach herself emotionally during the debate. The only way to do that is to not have an opinion. It’s been crystal clear that EVERYONE in the msm has a bias toward 0bama by the way he has been covered. NO probing into his past, selectivity on the stories that are covered about 0bama, refusal to ask him tough questions, nor probe into questionable practises in his campaign.

McCain has already said (after this issue erupted)that he will accept Gwen Ifill as the debate moderator, and is confident that she will act professionally. This is pretty much the position he had to take. At least if the bias (or, to be charitable, potential bias) is known before the debate gets underway, any such bias may be more readily detected, and that could work to Gov. Palin’s advantage.

I’m actually shocked that Gwen Ifill was so willing to call her ethics into serious question. Her professional reputation has been seriously stung by this and quite rightly so.
She has herself said that she did not tell the CPD about the book. I think that the CPD as well as the Republicans assumed that Ifill would not put her reputation on the line by concealing information like this. McCain / Palin can’t do much about it though even if they did do oppo research on the ‘moderator’. They’d only be attacked as racist if they had pushed for her removal, then or now.
This info is out there though and it will cause people to look at the debate through the prism of Ifill’s obvious lack of ethics, not to mention her financial conflict of interest.
In all fairness to the Commission, Senator McCain and the Obamedia, it was Ifill’s responsibility to disclose her upcoming book to the Commission, not theirs to research. She is 100% at fault here and should recuse herself immediately. Instead of all eyes being on the two candidates tonight, Ifill will be the main focal point and for days to come. She needs to go. Regarding Ifill’s remark about no one questioning a white journalist’s ability to be unbiased, well, she’s wrong. I have ALWAYS questioned a white journalists partiality with regard to politics and so have MOST AAs. And Gwen Ifill knows this.
AAs have always been traditionally suspicious of a white journalist’s POV. It goes with the territory of dealing with racism.
She can’t tell me, an AA, that in her private life, in her dealings with family, and other AA friends, that they haven’t chewed the fat big time over 0bama’s ‘historic’ candidacy and what it means to a substantial portion of AAs who have been clearly whipped into an hysterical frenzy over the possibility of 0bama becoming POTUS.
Ifill is a LIAR if she denies this. In most AA circles it’s ALL they are talking about. The only AAs who are not talking about it all the time are the very poor and uneducated, but even they are passionate about 0bama.
All you have to do is read about the statements Ifill’s cousin made (see the above link) to know that what I’m telling you is the truth.
McCain may be stating that his belief that Ifill will be fair, but here’s my take:
What if Ifill’s prepared to take one for the team?
Throw her journalistic integrity on the line for 0bama. How would be able to prove otherwise? People watching debates always see things from their own personal perspective. We would never come up with a fair concensus about Ifill’s bias. The damage would be done. 0bama gets elected, her book earns her a tidy profit and she’s set for life.
Ifill’s been around long enough to already be considering the next phase of her life after being an on-air journalist. She would be a hero in the circles she cares about and still be able to teach, lecture and write more books.
If Gwen Ifill really cares about her journalistic integrity then SHE MUST BE THE ONE TO DECIDE TO STEP DOWN.
If she doesn’t, I have no alternative but to assume that she’s taking one for the team.
Ifill’s inability to acknowledge how others could see this as a conflict of interest is telling. She obviously feels a personal stake in this.
Also, Ifill has observed many other “journalists” go weak in the knees for Obama without any negative repercussions. So, why should she care?
McCain and Palin don’t seem particularly concerned about this blowing up on the morning of the day before the big event. So maybe something is up with that. The campaign may have wanted her retained as damaged goods. It could be helpful to them in some way. If that was the strategy, it seems to be still operative and hopefully will come out as planned.

All the chatter saying the book was known about is BS. The average joe didn’t know about it as we are to busy living our lives and making a living to be “informed” about a book that someone is writing months before it comes out.
The point here being, those of us not in the inner circles of the media elite didn’t know about the book, but we know now and we don’t like it.
As Greta said last night, had she disclosed this to both campagins and they were ok with her as moderator, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
However, she didn’t do this and now she has opened herself up to questioning of her motives.
My letter…using the above talking points:
Is it the commission’s position that Gwen Ifill can be non-partisan in the debate Thursday when she has a new pro-Obama book set to publish Inauguration Day? She has a clear personal, professional, and financial motive to make sure that Biden wins the debate and that Obama wins the election. It is discrediting to your organization that you have her slated to moderate. I recommend and ask that you replace Ms. Ifill with someone who does not have a clear, unmistakable conflict of interest.
I am a lifelong democrat and believe in fairness, on all sides. I urge you to deal with this clear breach of ethics in a timely manner. If she cannot be replced then I would expect to see her mention her book and inform the viewing audience of her bias and conflict of interest up front before the first question is asked.

Here are more signs Sarah Palin could face an uphill battle with PBS host Gwen Ifill. Professor Sherrilyn Ifill of the University of Maryland Law School, who Gwen Ifill has lauded as “my brilliant baby cousin,” has written that black women are not buying Sarah Palin’s “false claims to feminism” and is portrayed as too perfect: “when women who are privileged present as though they have it all together, it’s offensive to black women.”
The Community Times, a suburban Maryland newspaper, found Professor Ifill was ardently opposed to the Alaska governor when they did an e-mail interview:
“From the first day, Palin presented herself as shooting a bear in the morning, field dressing it, cooking up the breakfast, diapering the babies, passing legislation in the afternoon, cleaning the house, satisfying her husband, etc., etc., etc. And it’s just not true,” she wrote in an e-mail interview. “It’s hard to be an average working mom, really hard. What good does it do to “lay down the law” now? I say enforce the law by following up with any firings or disciplinary actions. People have been emboldened by Obama’s behavior and law flaunting. I think Gwen Ifill should step down, no doubt about it. It has nothing to do with black or white, it has to do with the appearance of politcal bias. In the “old” days not that long ago when moderators and candidates were all white men, would a Democrat want a Rush Limbaugh as a moderator? Would a Republican want an Olbermann? Of course not, and it wouldn’t have happened.
But in the real old world, back when Journalists were professional, they hid their own political leanings. They knew it would corrupt their credibility. Now they don’t care about credibility.
