I didn’t get a chance to see the debate last night (I was at a previously scheduled function), but at the minimum, it certainly seems that Palin made a positive impression and has injected some life into a McCain campaign that’s been hammered by the events on Wall Street these past couple of weeks.

Now, McCain really needs to come out swinging and do two things …

1) Lay the blame for the mortgage mess squarely at the feet of Democrats like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, remining voters that he tried to pass legislation in 2005 that would have avoided this bailout while Barack Obama was busy accepting campaign cash in buckets from those who caused it.

2) Hammer home the fact that a Barack Obama victory means drastically higher taxes and drastically higher government spending.

Also, McCain can’t be aloof like he was at the last debate. He needs to engage Obama directly and aggressively challenge him. Obama does not like to be challenged directly. Also, when McCain is not looking at Obama he needs to be lookinng directly into the cameras, not at the moderator.

Why is there even a question about who to vote for? I’m just appalled. Barky and Snarky, on the BS ticket, are so old, tired and full of it. Snarky looked like he wanted to date rape Palin last night. What a perv. And the hair plugs, cruddy face lift, and Louis Vuitton trunks under his eyes, WOW. Also for middle america, working parents like me. McCain is going to increase the earned income credit for families to recieve 7000 instead of 3500.
That is factually the biggest tax relief in our nations history. So who is really for middle america?

There are so many ways to handle this that doesn’t necessitate the bail out of wallstreet speculators who brought the credit market down. Worse yet there is still no oversight as Paulson is still going to get his grubby paws on the money and ACorn is still in the bill!

This bailout is a complete slap in the face to every american. Rather than Ceo’s taking responsiblity and cutting their pay to match the reduced profits they are experiencing, they getting congress to pay off their bad investments so they can continue making the same rediculous amount of money they make every year.

In earlier days, this would have caused a revolution. You’re tax money is going to pay someone who doesn’t represent you in government. This is treason what they are doing.

FEDERAL HOUSING ENTERPRISE REGULATORY REFORM ACT OF 2005

Mr. President, this week Fannie Mae’s regulator reported that the company’s quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were “illusions deliberately and systematically created” by the company’s senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.

The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae’s former chief executive officer, OFHEO’s report shows that over half of Mr. Raines’ compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.

The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator’s examination of the company’s accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.

For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac–known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs–and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.

I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.

I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation.

Marc, thank you for that article about defeating Obama & still feeling good in the morning. Myself, that would not be hard to do, but i appreciate that it is more difficult for some. I believe that this election we all are having to make some partisan concessions in order to safeguard our Capital value: the future of Liberty & democratic process in our Great nation.

As a Reagan conservative i find myself in an unprecedented place as well. I back a Republican, McCain that is more liberal than myself & dearly wishing he were running against a Democrat, HRC, who is more liberal than him. Why do i compromise? Because, that is what the nation needs right now, & i think that is what President Reagan would do right now too.

Lets consider some things here. I find it humorous that you list a number of reasons why Obama looks more like Bush than McCain. While we may take opposite sides on the virtue of those particular points, i share your disgust at Obama’s shameless lack of integrity in trying to adopt them as his own. Obama is a political doppleganger, and correct me if i’m wrong, but a doppleganger is only a shell of what it appears to be. Beneath the skin it is a monster!

I did not know McCain had promised to be a 1 term president, though it makes sense that he would be. I also appreciate that you dispel some misconceptions about Roe vs Wade. This is a radioactive issue that no 1 term administration is going to commit political suicide over, & no supreme court justice is going to risk civil upheaval for. McCain & Palin have both made it very clear that they have no intention of criminalizing abortion, regardless of their personal views on the issue. As much as Obama’s people have tried to use Palin’s conservative religious views against her, it just doesn’t stick. Both candidate’s on the Republican ticket have demonstrated a remarkably moderate, hands-off approach to matters of faith in personal choices and politics, and the Obama camp has earned serious credibility problems in such accusations.

From, a different angle, while we are discussing the politics of fear, let me point out one danger that is clear & present: unipolar extremism! We all saw how unhealthy 2000-2006 was under Bush with Republicans in majority. We are looking at this again if Obama is elected, but with Democrat majority. Would it surprise you that one-party dominance like that has nearly always proved disastrous in our nations history? Obama, together with the most hated & mistrusted congress in our nations history will not & CAN NOT bring our country together! he will inevitably polarize it more, tearing it asunder. Consider the other option. How much partisan damage can McCain do in a one term administration while checked by a Democrat majority in both houses? If anything, it behooves him to hold true to his campaign promise to work with the opposition in the interest of the American people. As a conservative, is this ideal to me? No, of course it isn’t. Problem is, i love America, and i know that i serve my conservative values better through bipartisanship than through stalwart obstructionism! On the other hand, Obama if elected will not need bipartisanship. He will not need cooperation. He can effectively get rubber stamp approval to turn his back on half the nation.

This is a year that requires Americans to set aside differences and unite! Marc has correctly pointed out that McCain is a moderate. As a Conservative or a Liberal, don’t lose sleep over voting for him next month. As a Liberal or a Conservative, you are not betraying your partisan values by doing so, you are defending them! I mean that! How so? Integrity! We keep our Nation & our democratic process intact, & survive to debate our differences 2008-2012. Now is not the time for partisan politics, now is the time to defeat Barry on November 4th!

One of Sarah Palin’s best moments was talking about her and Todd having no health insurance at times in their lives. Many, many people can relate and now know that she can relate.

This provides an opening, an opportunity for McCain. His current plan is not enough. Many voters do not believe Obama is capable of passing health care reform.

McCain needs to improve his plan and put it out to the American people by his next debate. Bill Clinton, during his candidacy, was always looking to improve his ideas and plans– part of what made him such an exciting candidate.

The woman stood up in front of the nation and spoke like a Vice President. As soon as the debate was over Chris Matthew and his minions Andrea Mitchell were running their mouths with envy. Huge early ratings for Palin-Biden debate

UPDATED: Thursday’s highly anticipated face-off between Alaska governor Sarah Palin and Delaware senator Joe Biden may be the most-watched debate in 16 years.

Last night’s event totaled a 45.0 overnight meter-market household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research.

That’s 42% higher than Friday’s presidential debate between top-of-the-ticket contenders John McCain and Barack Obama, which scored a collective 31.6 rating among broadcast and cable networks.

It’s also a stunning 60% higher than the 2004 debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards. In fact, the early figure surpasses any presidential debate since 1992’s second bout between Bill Clinton, Ross Perot and George Bush (which received a 46.3 rating).

The measurement will likely decrease slightly when Nielsen releases total national viewers later today. If the rating stays above 43.6, it will mean Thursday night was the highest-rated vp debate in TV history, surpassing 1984’s most-watched record holder between George Bush and Geraldine Ferrarro.

Thursday’s match was expected to potentially overthrow Friday’s presidential debate in viewers due to questions about Palin’s readiness and because the vp match was held on a Thursday, the most-watched night of the week. The audience response puts the election back onto the familiar historic and record-breaking ratings territory that characterized the convention coverage.

My thirteen year old walked into the room as Palin was giving her closing speech. Now mind you this is a teen that rolls his eyes at everything to do with politics. He was talking to me and stopped mid sentence and turned to the television to watch the rest of what Palin had to say. When she finished, he said “that was good stuff. I felt like she was talking directly to me, and I liked what she was saying. She sounded great.”

Now the fact that even a 13 year old could see her charisma and hear her message speaks volumes of her style. (And don’t bring it down to “she talks like a teenager and has the intellect of one”), the point is that she has the ability to engage people on many different levels. That is an invaluable skill sorely needed in politics today.

I liked Sarah Palin from the day she was “announced” – but she exceeded even my expectations. She was on point, she was moving at 100 MPH while Joe was trying to keep up (if anyone was sticking to “talking points” it was Biden), she is informed, and has the instincts to lead. Some have cricized her for “patriotic” answers. This is what the Left is reduced to – patriotism is a bad thing. Except when they want to use “support the troops” to fool people. Palin owned that debate: she was Reaganesque in her presentation. She spoke past the media directly to the people. If McCain-Palin don’t win in 2008, I am eager to support Sarah ini 2012. As the Presidential candidate.
