The New York Times Drops the Ball on Ayers and Obama

Some may be inclined to commend the New York Times for a “good start” (You know the old joke? What do you call a 1000 lawyers chained together at the bottom of the ocean? A good start.) But while offering the appearance of an in depth investigation The New York Times actually tries to help Senator Obama cover up his lies about Ayers.

For those living in a cave in recent years, Bill Ayers is a self-confessed unrepentant terrorist who played a key role in launching Barack Obama’s political career. Let’s take this step-by-step. First, here is what Barack Obama claimed earlier this year when questioned by George Stephanopolus:

Can you explain that relationship for the voters and explain to Democrats why it won’t be a problem?

OBAMA: George, but this is an example of what I’m talking about. This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who’s a professor of English in Chicago who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis.

And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn’t make much sense, George.

The New York Times does concede that Obama has not been accurate about his relationship with Ayers:

A review of records of the schools project and interviews with a dozen people who know both men, suggest that Mr. Obama, 47, has played down his contacts with Mr. Ayers, 63. But the two men do not appear to have been close.

But the Times perpetuates the nonsense that contacts between Ayers and Obama were of no consequence. The Times reports:

“The suggestion that Ayers was a political adviser to Obama or someone who shaped his political views is patently false,” said Ben LaBolt, a campaign spokesman. Mr. LaBolt said the men first met in 1995 through the education project, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, and have encountered each other occasionally in public life or in the neighborhood. He said they have not spoken by phone or exchanged e-mail messages since Mr. Obama began serving in the United States Senate in January 2005 and last met more than a year ago when they bumped into each other on the street in Hyde Park.

Fortunately we do not have to depend on the Times to get the story. Instead we have the work of Steve Diamond (see his piece here) who has done the real investigation that puts to shame the NY Times effort.

The Obama campaign continues to insist that Ayers had nothing to do with Barack’s selection as chairman of the board of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. According to the Times:

In March 1995, Mr. Obama became chairman of the six-member board that oversaw the distribution of grants in Chicago. Some bloggers have recently speculated that Mr. Ayers had engineered that post for him.

In fact, according to several people involved, Mr. Ayers played no role in Mr. Obama’s appointment. Instead, it was suggested by Deborah Leff, then president of the Joyce Foundation, a Chicago-based group whose board Mr. Obama, a young lawyer, had joined the previous year. At a lunch with two other foundation heads, Patricia A. Graham of the Spencer Foundation and Adele Simmons of the MacArthur Foundation, Ms. Leff suggested that Mr. Obama would make a good board chairman, she said in an interview. Mr. Ayers was not present and had not suggested Mr. Obama, she said.

Not true. The documentary evidence suggests otherwise (again, thanks to Steve Diamond for these nuggets). The national headquarters for the Annenberg Challenge was located at Brown University and managed under the direction of Brown’s President, Vartan Gregorian. Diamond has uncovered several letters between Gregorian and Ayers. According to a letter dated November 18, 1994, Gregorian informed Bill Ayers:

”This probably goes without saying, but I urge you as you compose the governing Board and the Collaborative, to engage people who reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of Chicago.”

On December 1, 1994 Ayers and Anne Hallett (who co-chaired the CSRC with Ayers) wrote back to Gregorian:

“Thank you for your letter of November 18, 1994. We are continuing to build a broad base of consensus and support for the main thrust of the proposal….We have given careful thought to the issues raised in your letter. We are working with Adele Simmons, Deborah Leff, and Pat Graham on issues of management and governance to ensure that Chicago’s Annenberg Challenge initiative is successful. We offer the following responses:….Board of Directors. A five-to-seven person Board of Directors of highly respected Chicagoans is being assembled. Pat Graham, president of the Spencer Foundation, has agreed to serve and is willing to work with the Board. The duties of the Board will be to approve grants, to help raising matching funds, and to hire the executive director….The Board and the Collaborative will reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of Chicago.”

So what? The issue is not who actually sat down with Barack Obama in March 1995 and asked him to become the chairman of this board. No. There are two critical, unanswered questions. First, why was an inexperienced lawyer like Barack Obama asked to chair this board? Second, why has Barack refused to discuss in detail what he did with this board and his interactions with Bill Ayers during the four years he chaired this effort?

That is what does not make sense. Obama is running for President and faces the charge that he lacks significant experience running anything. Okay, here he is chairman of a board that was responsible for raising and disbursing more that $100 million dollars and Obama says nothing about this time in his life? Why? Because he did regularly interact and exchange ideas with Bill Ayers. Look carefully at the statement issued by the Obama campaign, “they have not spoken by phone or exchanged e-mail messages since Mr. Obama began serving in the United States Senate in January 2005.”

Got that? But they were speaking and exchanging email prior to January 2005. We also now know that Ayers is communicating with Obama through David Axlerod. Axlerod and Ayers have been in regular communication on figuring out how to manage the potential fallout from the public learning that Barack Obama for many years thought it was okay to work with and accept advice from an unrepentant terrorist. Those are uncomfortable facts and go to the essence of the charge that challenging Obama’s judgment in hanging out with unsavory characters–e.g., Ayers, Rezko, Wright. It is both troubling and reflects a bizarre lack of political acumen for someone allegedly such a gifted politician.

So many people and institutions seem to be ready to go down with the S.S. SoetorObama… It’s really amazing, shocking, and sad at the same time.

If/When the “Whitey Tape” is released, there’s going to be a lot of embarrassed (and enraged) people in this country.

Obama: troops just airraiding villages and killing civilians

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrW4fOGIMVY&feature=related

If there was a tape no one would look at it, as no one has covered this video or questioned why he is speaking of our troops in a negative manner.

Comment by vinnie | 2008-10-04 11:19:41

This comment IS outrageous. He’s trying to conjure up the image of Vietnam with Americans. McCain has to hit him hard with this one to follow up with what Palin said. He makes American Troops sound barbaric and blood thirsty where we would kill innocent civilians.

Comment by Jackie | 2008-10-04 11:20:38

He is talking just like Ayers.

Those kind of “baby killer” lines are typical of the Anti-Viet Nam war movement.

Obama knows nothing of military action or how to employ it. He disparages the military at every turn. Our kids in uniform deserve better.

Comment by Lisa | 2008-10-04 11:44:53

I have another disgusting example to show that Obama is not a leader.

When Obama talked to the Hispanic community in Los Angeles about one or two months ago, he said that US immigration law enforcement took babies away from their nursing mothers. He said that Hispanic children come home from schools and only found out their parents are missing.

He described US Immigration law enforcement as terrorists and portraited the arrest of illigal aliens as horrible violence of the US government. He ensured the Hispanic community that under his administration, the above described tragedy will not happen.

He trashed US immigraiton law enforcement agency in order to get Latino’s votes. Just like the way he trashed US troops to get votes from anti-war voters.

Comment by Northwest rain | 2008-10-04 13:44:35

I hold Obama in contempt — so it torques me off to have to say that in this tiny point he may have been correct.

Three or four years ago the INS did raid a chicken processing plant and parents were rounded up. There was one case of a nursing mother being deported — and her child was left in the US.

After undocumented parents are detained by immigration-enforcement operations raiding worksites, children are being left behind, a new report reveals.

Released Wednesday by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and the Urban Institute, the report found that for every two undocumented workers detained, one child is left behind. And, of the children left behind, two-thirds are U.S. citizens younger than 10.

Oklahoma is one of the latest states to enact tough immigration laws. The law, which takes effect today, makes it a felony to move or house undocumented immigrants and enables documented workers to sue their employers if they’re displaced by undocumented workers, reports USA Today.

“That we are putting the youngest, most vulnerable members of our society at profound risk is something that must be taken into consideration in any policy decision,” Janet Murguia, president and CEO of NCLR, said in a statement. “This report clearly demonstrates that it may be years before we know the full effect of the worksite raids on these children and the long-term costs to our society.”

The nonpartisan Urban Institute studied three communities that were targeted in the past year by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who conducted large-scale worksite raids. The communities were Greeley, Colo., Grand Island, Neb., and New Bedford, Mass.

NCLR, which funded the study, reported that 912 people were arrested and 506 children were directly affected.

“The local governments and communities we studied did not have adequate resources to deal with children’s needs in the aftermath of the raids,” Randy Capps, a demographer with the Urban Institute, said in a statement. “At the same time, the federal government did not have in place policies and procedures that explicitly consider the protection of children.”

As children’s parents and guardians were carted off, schools, childcare providers and extended family were forced to provide for them. Following the raid, school districts made sure the children had family or guardians to go to.

I HATE to agree with that sh*thead on anything. However, the truth is the truth.

That is insulting to all those men and women that served, am appalled that this man wants to be commander in chief but yet this is what he feels that our military is engaged in.

Right Obama I can just see all the respect that individuals in the armed service will have for you, they will sure be willing now to go out there and put they life on the line after all the wonderful praise you are heaping on them, telling the world of what a wonderful job the military of the USA is doing.

Obama is for the troops in fact he has said time and time again that the troops need our support, the gov.ts support and that theMcCain voted against more funding to give support to the troops for fear they were getting “all kinds of goodies” in the bill trying to be past. who cares what was included the fact is that our troops havent recv’d crap under Bush. My family is in marines, navy, and coast guard so my info is 1st hand. the troops are fighting the wrong war without enough support….why else would mothers be packing things like bullet proof vests, silly string and other basic needs to keep our loved ones alive? i mean seeing as how McCain is so in the know. Why hasnt he given up the money? Oh I know he is helping the Wall street crooks with all his deregulation….lol

Any intelligent person knows the NYT is in the tank for Obama. This is just their velvet glove, token “investigaion” that allows the less intelligent to still believe the NYT is a serious work of journalism. Don’t expect the NYT to dig any deeper, as that would undercut their political agenda.

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-10-04 09:07:42

The Times is exactly what Steve Schmidt of Team McCain said they were: a joke masquerading as a legit news organization.

During this campaign season, they have Bob “Leaning Tower of Pisa” Herbert screw up, Elizabeth Bumiller print false and unsourced information, wrote an idiotic editorial blog posting, I think, about how Obama was not playing the race card which Obama essentially copped to the next day and now this. And there’s a hell of a lot more.

FUCK YOU New York Times. You’re a f*cking joke, and if anyone had any doubts about that before this election cycle, there are none now. When you get run out of business by better and more responsible profit ventures, no one will miss your stupid, jackass Jayson Blair grey behind.

Oh, and I had my own smear job by the NYT this season, so I know exactly what I’m talking about here. It can happen to you, too, if you are not on the side of the Upper West Side d*ckhead elitist liberal BS.

You’re going down, NYT. And it will be sweet as hell when you go under.

Exactly; that has been their tactic all along: pre-empt and desensitized. And then polute the info. mixing truth w/half truths so that the public discards everything.

Shame on the news media 100 times over.

BTW: Tapper has an article today as well (surprised?)
He reports on a new FBI investigation on Rezko helping the rehab of the IL Gov.’s home. Just like w/Obama. But Tapper’s take is a cynical one in the sense that all this doesn’t matter and that it is just the Rep.’s October usual….(do not like his attitude).

Hannity did a series of shows on Obama’s connections before he clinched the nomination. All he’s doing is re-running these same connections in one show instead of broken up over several. There are no new revelations. Also, the timing is bad as the economy gets worse. This is a losing tactic because instead of giving ideas on how they are going to help middle class Americas in a time of crisis, they are going for character assassination. This will drive even more independents and undecided voters to Obama. And the best part of it is that they announced that they will start going negative. If this is you fool-proof plan to defeat Obama, why in the world would your surrogates announce it? Obama’s people already know what’s coming and will have plans to refute all of it. That was just plain dumb.

The problems is that most voters are not intelligent. They are sheep that blindly follow what they consider to be unbiased reporting (MSM). I used to be one of them…until this year.

I firmly believe that the day after this election, we need to start some sort of grass roots movement for a responsible and accurate main stream media.

Comment by athena | 2008-10-04 12:31:49

Well considering FOX has more viewers that MSNBC or CNN combined I don’t thin anyone is watching the MSM. Everyone I know has tuned the alphabet news out as well.

Comment by jbjd | 2008-10-04 13:33:20

I think it is difficult for those of us who became involved in this election cycle way back during the primary campaigns to imagine that far more of the electorate are only now paying attention. And I completely understand that people who are only recently involved do not yet question the credibility of media they have counted on for years to provide accurate information on which they base their voting decisions.

Methinks that the NYT is seeing a DRAMATIC decline in subscriptions and readership due to their more than flagrant partisanship. They are trying to cover their behinds by throwing a bone at the barking angry dogs!
They should go UNDER, be taken over by Murdoch, to put some gall in ALL their mouths, and some dung in that of the Dowdy Maureen, and the drugged Bob Herbert!

Comment by Jackie | 2008-10-04 11:30:21

May I recommend that we all write to the United States Military Academy at West Point. For decades they have forced the cadets to pay for subscriptions to the NYT so that it could insure that the cadets were aware of current events.

I would like to call for a switch of that policy given how biased the NYT is. I hate to see that 4000 soldiers are forced to read the propoganda while they are trying to prepare to serve the nation.

Were 4000 subscriptions to be cancelled in 1 day that would be a wake up call.

Comment by Lisa | 2008-10-04 11:57:49

Jackie,

I am shocked to know that West Point students need to read NYT. They realy have to doing that.

NYT and other left wing media not only affect the Americans, they have impact worldwide. That really worries me.

I can read Chinese and I do read China, Taiwan and Hongkong versions of google news on a daily basis. When they report the American news, the sources are usually NYT, CBS or AP. I bet you that if McCain/Palin win in the election, the people in Taiwan, China and Hong Kong will be totally confused because they have been brain washed that Obama, no one else, will be our next President.

Obama lied about his association with Rev. Wright, he lied about Tony Rezco, and William Ayers (not to mentions others!). John McCain needs to call him on these issues about LYING right at the debates for all to see. Why lie if there is nothing to hide? But as we all know there is something to hide and that is EXACTLY why he downplays his associations. (which is also known as LYING!)

Comment by Shiloh | 2008-10-04 09:03:59

A classic strategy by NYT, yield a little and hope it takes the wind out of the opposition’s sails. Also I think they are creating future citations for Obama. I can see a future Obama ad that states: “The New York Times said: “The suggestion that Ayers was a political adviser to Obama or someone who shaped his political views is patently false,”

I see this as a confirmation that team Obama knows McCain or RNC or 527s, whoever, is going to come at him hard on Ayers over the next month. The wagons are being circled for the final showdown.

Comment by fif | 2008-10-04 09:08:20

The good news is: the New York Times has no credibility with people outside of the elite, and they are already Obama supporters. Echo chamber. I stopped reading the Times in February–it’s garbage now. It’s integrity has been comprised since the build up to the war and Judith Miller’s relationship with Scooter (among others). It’s been all downhill from there. I can’t wait to see his “chickens come home to roost.” Sooner or later, he will be exposed.

Comment by Benjamin | 2008-10-04 10:33:46

I agree, Shiloh. This NYT article appears to be a preemptive strike engineered by the Obama campaign, to soften the blow for any future attacks on this issue. The article is definitely overlaid with Obama talking points. It’s similar to the way Obama has handled the Rezko thing – by periodically revealing a little more info about the extent of the relationship.

She sent numerous urgent requests to have investigations done during all of the caucus fraud, and they were ignored. Over 2,000 complaints were filed.

Hillary had to fight Obama’s smears, Her own Party, the Mainstream media. You can add a 4th fight: the sheeple people who actually believed the lies. Don’t ever forget or minimize what she went through, and she still managed to get 18 million votes!!

She deserves respect.

Yesterday in a note about the strange weather patterns of La Nina and global warning, we are pretty clear that in fact hell must have frozen over. As evidence we would cite the fact that John Fund, a Wall Street Journal columnist, and long time scurrilous opponent and truth-bender when it comes to ACORN, actually quoted Mike Slater from Project Vote in a favorable mention. If ACORN and our family of organizations and John Fund are aligned then in fact the stars and moon must have come together to oppose mail ballots in these putative contests conclusively. i have yet to see a clear explanation of why
“exchanging ideas” with Bill Ayres is some kind of immmutable black mark on someone’s character.

As a professor in good standing at the University of Illinois/Chicago, I assume Ayres “exchanges ideas” regularly with a host of people; that’s pretty much his job, as he is employed by the government of Illinois to do. Should everyone he cross paths with refuse to “exchange ideas” with him because he was a member of the Weather Underground 40 years ago?

There is a reason this story has gotten no traction. People are focused on the many crises we face TODAY, not on another rehash of the tumult of the 1960s. Most voters weren’t even conscious people at that time and really don’t care about Ayres — a guy who’s not running for anything.

Are you out of your mind? As recently as 2001, Ayers said he wished he “would have done more” in terms of terrorist activities, and has not ruled out doing so. So tell me how domestic terrorism is not relevant in 2008?!

Comment by fif | 2008-10-04 09:14:28

Also, I heard a member of special forces saying that Obama would not be able to get FBI or Secret Service clearance with his associations–but he’s able to get the ultimate security clearance as CIC?

Comment by Jackie | 2008-10-04 11:54:58

Obama is not qualified to get the most basic security clearance.

I held a secret clearance so that I could order and process the equiment and parts to repair the MILES (laser tag) training materials.

Disqualifiers:

Foreign Family members:
~brother working for China Marketing
~brother trained as Economist in East Germany (currently in jail in Kenya for inciting violence after the December Elections)
~mother of his half-sister married to Russian

Associations:
William Ayers & wife Terrorists
Tony Rezko Convicted Felon

Travel:
Violated State Department Ban on travel to Pakistan in mid 1980’s

No Addresses during his time in NY?

He couldn’t order screws and wires to repair MILES–why the hell should we give him the Nuke Codes.

I’m just sayin’ DUDE!!!!!

I concluded BO thought there was something wrong with his relationship with Mr. Ayers, however involved or attenuated, given these facts. For example, 1) he failed to disclose such a relationship existed. 2) When confronted, he denied such a relationship existed. 3) Despite records confirming the two men worked on an educational project through the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, BO obfuscated their relationship, offhandedly referring to BA as a Professor of English.

So, Barack Obama was the AFFIRMATIVE ACTION BOARD CHAIR.selected by Ayers because headquarters demanded it! And, now, we have the AFFIRMATIVE ACTION DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE because Howard Dean demanded it! Will the American people now select the AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PRESIDENT–a candidate with no experience, no qualifications, and no character, who became President of the United States–just because he’s black?

The national headquarters for the Annenberg Challenge was located at Brown University and managed under the direction of Brown’s President, Vartan Gregorian. Diamond has uncovered several letters between Gregorian and Ayers. According to a letter dated November 18, 1994, Gregorian informed Bill Ayers:

”This probably goes without saying, but I urge you as you compose the governing Board and the Collaborative, to engage people who reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of Chicago.”

Of course they did

The important thing to consider is the role of these foundations, like Annenberg and more importantly the Ford Foundation of which Bam Bam’s mother Stanley Ann
Dunham was on the payroll.

It is Ford Foundation that helped fund the ‘Weather Underground” as well as James Cone’s Black Liberation Theology operation.

The best reference is Webster Tarpley’s new book
Barack H. Obama: The Unauthorized Biography (Buy at Amazon to get it up the ratings list) The book goes into detail into the networks behind Obama, with an analysis that demonstrates exactly how these oligarchical forces have destroyed America and intend to further enslave you.

So consider this~

I tell you who should say something and be VERY informed this information before she alerts the people watching the MSM stations. It should be Sarah Palin. What does she have to lose? Let the smirky, tough gal get on one of the MSM shows and say, ” What really bothers me about the Media(MSNBC and CNN), is how can you spend 24/7 talking about my personal life and don’t even give one moment on Bill Ayers? Yes, the Bill Ayers, that guy that Obama said was a neighbor that lived down the street and tried to bomb our lovely capital when he was eight years ago? Eight years old! Let’s guy serious, Chris Matthew, Obama was NOT eight years old, and you as Journalist have failed the American people. Let’s talk about Bill Ayers, Mr. Chris Matthew, this guy wasn’t just his neighbor, this guy bombed our country, this guy sat with him, did legislations, bills, and the list goes on and on. They are friends! Now how in the hell can anyone be qualified to run our country with a friend like this, Chris? The people are NOW getting this informaton from certain fair and balance stations and the blogs? So, please don’t talk to me about Troopgate issues, talk to me about how the Media gave up our country to radicals!” Yep….that is what smirky, daring, Sarah should do and say to him. But of course, they will never take the chance on having her on their stations because she MIGHT just say it. You know, let her say it on the fair and balance stations over and over. The 70 million people that watched her are people that are curious about her and will pick up the info. A good example is the remark of Obama saying that we were killing children and raiding villages, I personally did not know this and she alerted me to it last night. Lets have this woman as the golden trumpet of the Angel of G-d standing on the sands by the ocean alerting the country. We have 30 days to accomplish this. If the camp refuses to put the whitey tape (if it exist) and the sins of the Limo, then let’s use our gal with the smirky, tough smile to use that golden trumpet in every opportunity she gets. Amen

Comment by Benjamin | 2008-10-04 09:34:28

While providing some detail, the tone of the NYT article definitely attempts to still downplay the relationship. I thought it was amusing that they claim that Obama and Ayers just happened to “cross paths” from 1995-1999 on Annenberg, and then they just happen to “cross paths” again in 1999 on the Woods board.

It’s beyond me how any informed citizen can think that this disturbing pattern of Obama associations has nothing to do with who he is – and his qualifications to be President. Hopefully, the McCain campaign will start hitting some of this hard in the time left, so that people who are just starting to pay attention to the election can get educated on who Obama really is.

It’s now or never, McCain may win or lose the debate but I would prefer him to come out swinging. No more Mr. nice guy…you can’t win an election that way. Hillary got nowhere by biting her tongue. Go Mac! Put that little skinny punk in his place!!!

Comment by Thinker | 2008-10-05 22:19:29

Hillary did call Obama out, Tony Rezko, lying about her healthcare plan, etc, etc.

There was only so much she could have done at the time.

She had to deal with the sexism, the racist labels.

At the time, people didn’t want to hear about the sexism, they denied it and said no, it’s just Hillary.

At the time, people were not hip to Obama calling anyone a racist if they didn’t follow him, and people actually started to question whether or not the Clintons really were racist.

My point is that Hillary dealt with a lot of crap, she paved the way for a lot of women in politics, and I’m tired of people acting like all of this is somehow her fault.

It’s not.

I like this part: “But the two men do not APPEAR to have been close.” The key word is appear. We better realize that behind the gold curtain, Ayers is one of the puppet masters. He couldn’t bring America down through overt violence, so he is now getting his chance to do it covertly and some uneducated Americans are marching right along with him and they don’t even know it. Those of us who do know will be pulled in totally unwilling but forced if Obama wins this election. I hope Hannity throws some serious bombs in his special Sunday. Haven’t heard a lot of ads about it so I’m hoping that means they want to keep it close to the vest until showtime. Either that or it’s a soft piece that will really do nothing aka the NYT article.

Last night, I talked to a high school kid working at his relative’s business. Kids are being brainwashed by the schools and teachers that McCain will be for more war and Obama won’t. Sarah Palin has just (rightly) attacked BHO for his comments about Afghanistan. She would not be taking this chance to change voter’s minds if she didn’t feel this (BHO and aggressive foreign policy) to be true as the rest of us at NQ KNOW to be true.

I, personally, believe that all parents with a conscience who know schools are doing this should pull the kids out at least when it is practical or as often as possible until Nov. 4. They aren’t learning anything under these circumstances anyway and let the school districts have some pain over loss of state funds per individual student.

McCain and Palin need to call out Obama on his associations with Ayers and others and bring independent voters to his side.

He and Obama’s other terrorists supporters, ie., big money contributors from foreign countries need only to put the post turtle in there and they can accomplish through their puppet what they haven’t been able to do otherwise. Destroy the United States from the inside out. Frightening scenario. Shawn Hannity is about to start unleasing his arsenal, I think and can only hope. I hope the Ayers connection gets hammered the next few weeks and I think it will. But I don’t really think it is one of the big guns. I think the big guns trained on Obama are: (in no order)

Chicago Political Machine

Lacks American Roots/Name and Citizenship Issues

Wright/Farrakahn/Black Liberation Theology

Lacks Admin Experience/Pseudo-Celebrity

Hard Left Radical

Comment by Benjamin | 2008-10-04 09:46:23

The Ayers relationship fits very nicely into your Chicago Political Machine and Hard Left Radical sections. Ayers is still an admitted radical, refers to himself as a small “c” communist, and has converted to Islam. I think he’s a significant piece in the jigsaw puzzle of Obama’s background.

Comment by Irish1139 | 2008-10-04 11:35:23

Comment by Jackie | 2008-10-04 12:08:18

Yes and they live in the same neighborhood in Chicago.

Comment by Kal | 2008-10-04 09:49:15

Your last two points are really two facets of the Ayers/BO connection, because Ayers etc. form the hard left conduit through which BO came into power, and the way Ayers etc. pulled the strings gave BO the chance to play public roles without actual qualifications, and thereby helped bootstrap BO into ever-increasing positions of stature without ever actually doing the job.

This connection accounts for everything from moving from Occidental to Columbia, then the Chicago ‘community organizing,’ then his admission to (and funding in) Harvard, then his selection as head of the HarvLRev, then his early legal career.

BO never had the actual credentials for anything, it was always smoke, mirrors, and big connections playing in the background, and there has always been a power/hardleft purpose to all this.

Affirmative action not for the purpose of actually helping eradicate the longstanding structural and systemic effects of racism, sexism, classism, ablism, heteroism, etc. — but affirmative action for the purpose of elevating hardleft desire for power to the highest levels — power for power’s sake. And then, maybe, a bit of help for their friends.

The Ayers connection needs to be put in the context of Obama’s lifelong association with radical marxists. If the Times or anyone else was interested in true investigative journalism, they would explore the connection between Frank Marshall Davis and the Ayers family, and whether Davis directed Obama to Ayers decades ago.

Comment by Kal | 2008-10-04 09:51:12

The Ayers connection alone will not be enough to sink Barky Oblahblah. But it can be part of a long string of radical associations, bad judgments, fraud, corruption, inexperience and wrong values that chokes the air out of his campaign. Someone needs to tie it all together, into ONE coherent picture that paints Obama as unfit to lead this great country. Put the pieces of the puzzle together and present it to the undecideds in the middle. C’mon 527’s–Connect the dots already!

Comment by Benjamin | 2008-10-04 10:08:36

I think the McCain campaign has pretty much connected all the dots. Take a look at barackbook.com They have just been hesitant to go hard into the issue of Obama’s character, background and judgment – but I think that is about to change.

In fact, I think the NYT article is almost a preemptive strike done by the Obama campaign – in anticipation of coming attacks on this issue. The NYT article does provide more detail than has ever been admitted in public – but it is still overlaid with Obama talking points – that the two “weren’t close,” “don’t exchange ideas,” etc.

Not only is this SCARY, scary. It is also disgusting that every American has to help pay for it.

these tax-exempt 501(c)3s “have no reason for existence other than to get grants from the government and foundations.” They are, essentially, an ACORN front for asking Uncle Sam to subsidize political activity.

Straight up question for Obama and the next debate:

Senator Obama you were the chairman of the Annenberg project in Chicago. A project that had $100 million dollars at its inception. Why haven’t you discussed this project and its outcome, moreover why doesn’t the public have a clue of your involvement? You never list this as part of your past ‘experience’ or ‘acheivements’?

Comment by jbjd | 2008-10-04 15:09:49

Yes; you get it. The issue is not just the relationship but the denial of this relationship. Let’s hope McCain and Palin get this, too.

Comment by chris | 2008-10-04 09:48:41

Not only did Ayers bomb govt. buildings, his last mission was a plot to bomb a dance at Ft. Dix full of soldiers and civilians that only failed because the bomb detonated early killing some of his cohorts. Then he was caught and got off because his family was wealthy with American dollars which he made full use of. Now he has resurfaced like a bug that crawls out of the ground every so many years. It’s just beyond disgusting that Obama is associated with Ayers in any way at all, and that he is allowed to run for president of this country. They are America haters and he is in the thick of them from childhood to now. No one can convince me that this hasn’t influenced his thoughts, values and intentions which is why he is being so easily manipulated by these very same people. Sorry to go on like this, but this subject makes me hopping mad and really frustrated that Americans don’t get this.

WTF is wrong with these people? The democratic party needs to answer and account for why this has not been given to the people of this country.how can you explain a nominee having associates that attempted to bomb one of our military installations? bomb buildings? uhh the more i find out about this guy i am trying to figure out how he is even eligible. this tells me that they honestly dont even CARE as long as they get a historical nomination.

Comment by chris | 2008-10-04 14:40:20

I am not sure of a link because this incident was mentioned on another blog. I remember parts of it from the time it occurred, but I did not look it up to confirm all of it. Sorry I can’t be more definitive and am not trying to mislead anyone. It also could be that the dance was being held off base, but from the explanation, it sounded like it was at the installation. Thanks for all you do, by the way Soldier. There are no words to use that can convey my gratitude.

Comment by chris | 2008-10-04 14:49:05

Soldier4Hillary: Here’s one excerpt relating to the above incident from an article in the Chicago Magazine August 2001:

“In 1970, a bomb that was apparently being built in a Greenwich Village townhouse, occupied by at least five members of the Weatherman, accidentally exploded—killing three of the group, including Ayers’s beloved Diana Oughton. In Fugitive Days, Ayers tries to imagine what happened. Maybe Diana tried to stop the others from their path? Maybe they all drank too much coffee and smoked too many cigarettes?

Maybe Diana saw that this bomb, packed with nails and screws, would have exacted a heavy human toll if it had ever reached its destination—a New Jersey military base. Could she have, in a gesture of sacrifice, crossed the wires herself? “I’ll never know what happened,” he says. “That’s the price I have to pay.”

Comment by bss | 2008-10-04 14:52:36

And voters in 2008 — facing economic meltdown, health-care crisis, iraq war, energy crisis — should give priority to this incident from 38 years ago…why?

Im trying to point out that THIS IS NOT A WINNING ISSUE FOR MCCAIN! he needs to find a way to connect with voters on the economy and other issues if he wants to WIN! he can’t win by ressurecting an ancient debate about the tactics of the weather underground!

Comment by chris | 2008-10-04 15:59:24

Because the man in the incident is still the same man with the same anti American issues and he is intimately involved in our election of the next President that’s why. Obama was formed of the thoughts and beliefs of numerous thugs just like Ayers. If you’ve been reading this site you know how many there are, how they influenced him and his current involvement with them. Obama should never have been allowed to run based on these people alone and yet here he is, close to being the POTUS. Every bad connection he’s ever had should be of prime importance to all voters and they need to know every last detail before Nov.4.

Oversight by everyone, so what about the association between Ayers and Obama as friends, that is a story, but NOT the major story when it comes to Obama as POTUS, the real story here is a simple one:

Obama worked on the ABC coalition and the Anneburg Challenge (headed the Annenburg Challenge) both of which were complete and total failures, yet Obama claims to be a reformed of education if he becomes POTUS! A two time loser wants to take another stab at education reforms to cause more damage to America’s children?

What is so wrong with this picture?

If the press is a protected part of the Constitution, why not have standards for the press so that the public can be protected from the press. The put-downs by Obamabots regarding ‘low information voters’ ie. not supporting Obama, is really about the ‘no infomration press’, pissing on the objective nature of their jobs and therefore producing a bad product for Americans. The need to reform and have standards as simple as objectivity can be measured on monthly, weekly, or daily basis.

Elections are too important to be thrown by candidate with foreign contributions and a willingly corruptible press. I know longer view them as having a liberal and racially-guilt tripping, misognynistic persona, but actually taking money to slant the news in Obama’s favor. Its a betrayal of core America’s ideals of freedom and democracy

Obama has set black people back many years. When it will eventually comes out (probably after he’s president) that he is a criminal, this will shine a very dark light on black people and other races will lose respect for the black race. People of other races will think… see he’s Havard eduacted and made it all the way to Senate, but he still turn out to be a crimnal. If we can’t trust a black person with all those credential then there’s no hope for the average black person, especially since ninty-five percent of black people will vote for Obama.

The problem with the New York Times and the Washington Post is that they have forgotten that democracy is dependent upon a free press. The New York Times motto use to be “All the News that is Fit to Print” and the Washington Post website states “We all share a belief that the free flow of information is essential to a successful democracy. Over the year’s the company’s leaders have taken great risks to ensure that citizens have unfettered access to the news.” http://www.washpostco.com/history.htm

News has lost out in both newspapers and television news as both groups scramble for revenue. Over the years they have lost readership and to keep their companies going they have turned themselves into an advertising media groups. In doing so, they have lost their journalistic traditions. They now cater to whoever pays them the most in advertising revenue. It would be interesting to know how much both campaigns have spent on advertising and where. We might find that the person who they are promoting in their “news” articles is the one paying them the most in advertising revenue.

Jack Cashill has an interesting multi-part story on Bill Ayers as the possible ghost writer for Obama’s “Dreams From My Father”.

What Mr Cashill says makes a lot of sense to me and would not only bring into question Obama’s association with an unrepentent terrorist, but would show him to be the shameless liar, fraud, and phoney that he is.

According to Mr Cashill,

“Obama’s memoir was published in June 1995. In January 1995, Ayers had chosen Obama, then a junior lawyer at a minor law firm, to chair the multi-million dollar Chicago Annenberg Challenge grants.”

For more, check Cashill’s website at http://www.cashill.com.

Whenever the media gets involved in Obama’s controversies, it’s always to cover them up and exonerate him. At the same time, whenever the media looks into manufactured controversies surrounding Obama’s opponents, it’s always to magnify the fake controversy and perpetuate it and claim it as the solid truth. This has gone on even before the hatchet job they did to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

This article is political for Obama. They are specifically choosing their words to paint a false picture.

re “The suggestion that Ayers was a political adviser to Obama or someone who shaped his political views is patently false,”

…oh gee, what a relief (snark). Hmmm who claims of just that? We know he’s not an adviser on Obama’s campaign, that would have been suicide. But he was a PARTNER, ALLY, MENTOR, PROMOTER, but no, not “an adviser”. lol

Comment by soldier4hillary | 2008-10-04 11:58:07

I just got off the phone with one of my soldiers spouse about this and she made a very good observation. First “Why is the media not reporting it” and why Obama supporters are more scared of Palin being VP than the fact that a candidate is taking illegal contributions from places many would call our enemies.

What people do NOT realize how bad this is. It questions our elected officials judgement in what is best for this country. Both parties are guilty. We as a whole have a right to know. How would YOU feel if almost 30 some odd days left you find out the person you intended to voter for had associates such as this? That is a dilema for the people I talked to today. And if they finally getting around to addressing those contributions from those third world countries? The Democratic party will not have a prayer of a chance for winning.

That would be the ultimate betrayal. That you placed the welfare of a man or woman before the country and the people. If its all true, not only will Obama not win, but it will be a very long time before people have faith in black elected officials. This shit is going to get UGLY

Comment by sjc-tx | 2008-10-04 12:08:59

I agree soldier4hillary… Its going to get ugly no matter who gets elected. The cheap and tawdry, illegal methods obama is using WILL come out. Republicans won;t take this lightly. The double standards will not hold. Sad thing is that IF this clown gets in, we are stuck with him and all his do-nothing, socialist, weak on defense ideas! He has undone women’s rights and civil rights 40 years!

Comment by soldier4hillary | 2008-10-04 12:43:04

The thing is, if they would of allowed Obama to be vetted this would of been known and he wouldnt be the nominee or maybe he would of been but polling worse…we dont know. But if the Republicans bring this forward and its true, I honestly dont see how people will be able to trust the judgement of the democratic party if they were willing to hide this. Do they have any idea how big this is? People were mad about Edwards and his wife knowing about his affair but still ran for president. I met some of his supporters who stated they felt betrayed because they gave donations to put him in the White House when he knew it would not of happened.

This is going to destroy the chances of Dems up and down the ballot. And if they prove the higher up dems knew? Yes, its going to be very ugly. When you have someone like Ayers, a domestic terriorist, associated with a candidate, holding a fundraiser for a senators campaign who is now a possible president. When we are overseas fighting terriorists who have no problem planting IEDs and shooting Mortars, losing lives because of people like Ayers? There will be no way for the Democratic party to salvage this. We deserve better.

His rich dad pulled strings.

The piece on BO’s relationship with Weatherman Bill Ayres was clearly meant to diffuse the coming onslaught from the Republicans on BO’s “friendships” with questionable characters. This piece by Times reporter Scott Shane should embarrass every teacher the guy ever had. Though he gives clues as to where to find the answer to the true relationship of Ayres and BO, he goes down none of the ratholes, and therefore diffuses the actual relationship of the two men, one a murderer and the other the soon to be, omg, president of the United States. Recently, John McCain threw Times Diva Maureen Dowd off the campaign plane (actually stranded her in Pittsburgh ha ha) because of the unfair and imbalanced reporting by the nation’s use-to-be must read and specifically that of Dowd. What a joke.

What’s the worse that could happen; Obama going back to his Senate seat or retiring in abject disgrace. I’m loving it.

Bill the bomber Ayers got off on a technicalitie.
BUT, his wife Dorhn did not and was once on the FBI’s most wanted list. Ayers also admitted to what he has done and said he did not regret and wished he bombed more.
The man killed poeple and bombed homes with innocent children in them. Bombed the capitol. Bombed the Police HQ’s in NY injuring police officers.
These 2 weatherunderground clowns are friends of obama and his wife worked with dorhn. Ayers set the education agenda of radicalizing chicago schools and obama pushed for it and funded it through Annenburg and the woods fund.
They worked together and for each other. It is not tangential. Just like Rezco,Wright, Farrakhan, and Phleger are not minor relationships.
THey shaped who obama is and what he worked for in local and federal government.

Comment by bss | 2008-10-04 13:30:38

How do you address the fact that Ayres has for years been employed by the state of Illinois as a professor to “exchange ideas” with many people as the centerpiece of his job? Remember, he has been a public employee for years, salary paid in part by taxpayers, publishing scores of academic articles and books and participating in numerous conferences, seminars and discussions?

In other words, he hasn’t exactly been hiding out in a cave somewhere — he’s been employed by the state of illinois specifically because of the university’s view of the value of his scholarship.

That’s why this issue has no legs and McCain needs to find other things to concertrate on that are relevant to the pressing issues of today, not to the tumult of a previous generation.

Comment by benny | 2008-10-04 13:31:46

yeah, keep telling yourself that. lol

Comment by bss | 2008-10-04 13:37:58

Why not reply to my question — how can a powerful argument be constructed that associating with Ayres disqualifies one for public office when he is in fact a public employee, by virtue of his long-standing job at the U of I? And that “exchanging ideas” with him disqualifies someone from office when Ayres’ job as a professor IS to exchange ideas?

if McCain wants to win on this issue, he’ll need to construct a case that isn’t easily countered — that means he and his supporters need to think this through!

Comment by fif | 2008-10-04 13:57:00

I will answer it. If Obama wanted to work for the FBI or the Secret Service, he would be rejected based on his radical associations. Period. Having a long-term collaborative relationship with a domestic terrorist would eliminate him from consideration. So why is he eligible for CIC, which obviously includes the highest level of security clearance?

Comment by bss | 2008-10-04 14:27:54

Can you provide

1. Sources for your statements about security clearances (i.e., something directly from teh FBI)

2. Definition of “long-term collaborative relationship”

I can assume that all of Ayer’s colleagues and his state of Illinois employers, and people like mayor Daley are also forbidden from “security clearances” as well, because they have associated with Ayers?

My point is that McCain needs to find a stronger issue to promote — this one doesn’t resonate with voters — they are far more worried about being attaked by Al Qaeda than by the Weather Undergroud

Obama’s nefarious associations are going prime time for the world to see. Actually I find it interesting that McCain waited this long to unload. But, he is a MAVERICK.

Comment by chris | 2008-10-04 16:21:27

What was he doing outside of his job or with the cover of being a reformed citizen? But oh yes, he never said he was reformed did he. In fact, he said he didn’t do enough to hit back at big bad America all the while enjoying his family’s money to avoid prosecution. You better believe he has been doing tons of things behind the scene that are still in his old agenda and he rounded up good old Barack to help. Now he has helped manuever his puppet into a place where he will accomplish what he started out to do—bring down the American way of life. He isn’t alone either. There are numerous terrorists marching right along with him. We should all be very afraid of this man.

Why is it dumb? It’s a legimiate question — what do you feel is the best response to the inevitable resurrection of the Keating scandal, if he brings up “guilt by association” stuff and esp. in light of the current economic crisis? His peers in the Senate actually censured him!

Comment by benny | 2008-10-04 13:40:30

If you’ve read the article above, and still dont understand, you’re an obot and never will understand. for you, its “guilt by association”. and thats it. but it goes much deeper than that. but ofcourse you dont take the time and energy to educate yourself. so we wont waste time either.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Have you read about McCain’s role in the “Keating 5″? Don’t you wonder why an unrepentant terrorist who would no doubt be serving a life sentence if not for the powerful Ayers family name has been so generous over the years with his support and mentorship of Barack Obama? He made Obama, fresh out of law school, the Chairman of a multimillion dollar trust, the Annenberg Challenge. This is just one example. You don’t give a greenhorn that kind of plumb job if you barely know them.

We all know that NYT’s is dropping the ball and that there was much more to the Obama/Ayer’s relationship, such as the funneling of funding by Chairman Obama to Ayer’s-controlled projects, and how about Obama’s praise for Ayer’s book, and more.

The real question the McCain campaign should ask is this: why would any voter trust a man as CIC who routinely is found to have falsely downplayed his true relationships with people like Ayers and Rev. Wright? Ayers was not “just a guy in my neighborhood” and Rezko was hardly some guy Obama “just did a few hours of legal work for,” and, in fact, Obama had to keep revising upward the amounts of money he received from Rezko, when he was repeatedly confronted with additional proof of higher campaign contributions.

Obama has a problem with the truth (there are hundreds of additional examples) and that is a huge issue for this voter.

Comment by Justin | 2008-10-04 13:44:07

Voters want to talk about the issues that affect their lives, not some bullshit guilt-by-association distraction. I dare the McCain campaign to try and make this their focus, because that just allows Obama to continue to pound home his message of economic change.

Comment by fif | 2008-10-04 14:01:11

Economic change! LOL. Based on WHAT? The only reason he benefits from the economic crisis is because he lies through his teeth every day and the fallen media does not call him or the complicit Democrats on ANY of it. He was “pushing for regulations” he has been claiming, and Biden reiterated this during the debate. SHOW US THE PROOF. What did he do–where is the legislation. NOWHERE. More empty talk, taking credit for things he never did. Meanwhile, McCain actually DID push for regulation, and he is being blamed BY ASSOCIATION for this mess. What a bunch of crap. The only way this guy has gotten this far is through lies and manipulation. It’s a very sad statement on the ignorance and gullibility of the American public. First Bush, now Obama. No wonder this country is going down the tubes.

Comment by bss | 2008-10-04 14:32:42

Campaign Trail Update:

Palin in Colorado:

Sarah Palin, using some of her strongest language to date to question the character of the Democratic presidential nominee, accused Barack Obama of “palling around with terrorists” Saturday at a closed fundraiser in Colorado.

She was referencing a front-page story in The New York Times that examined Obama’s ties to Bill Ayers, a founder of the 1960s radical group The Weather Underground.

“Our opponent, though, is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect — imperfect enough that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country,” Palin said.

“Americans need to know this. …I think, okay we gotta get the word out. This is in fairness to the electorate we gotta start telling people what the other side represents.”

——

YES! YES! YES! Spread the word on this! So glad to see Sarah Palin hitting the target on this. She nailed it!

The mainstream media needs to start doing their jobs instead of acting like cheerleaders for Obama!!

The media has become the cover-up squad for Barry.

The American people need to know about Obama’s relationships with known terrorists. Hit him and hit him hard! Time to take the gloves off! The media sure as hell won’t.

Obama’s past is a huge weakness and needs to be exposed. Keep hitting him every single day and he will fall.

McCain will nail Obama in the debate with this. Can’t wait to see Obama squirming in front of millions at the debate!

Goe get him McCain and knck him out!!

Comment by Deep Truths | 2008-10-04 14:57:00

I bet the MSM ignores it. Hopefully Tom Brokaw will have the guts and journalistic integrity to bring it up at the debates.

The NYT has no credibility. I am glad to hear that they are having financial difficulties. I hope they go down.

lol Ayers again, huh? gotta love republicans, they’re all about the real issues. of course you know this WILL backfire. maybe you haven’t noticed, but this is old news. most Obama supporters either already know about Ayers, or don’t care. as far as i know, Weather Underground didn’t ruin the economy, in fact, the weather underground was born from 60’s radicalism caused by… you guessed it! Republicans

Comment by chris | 2008-10-04 16:44:36

Goes to character and judgement two important ingredients in the making of a qualified president. And most average American voters do not know the extent of the relationship of these two men and others that have influenced Obama’s whole life. Be real troll, there are a lot of issues besides the economy that affect the campaign. You just wish this would all be ignored because it is so damaging to the anointed one. We shall see how much this hurts him in the long run.

Comment by bss | 2008-10-04 16:54:26

Chris: considering that Ayers has been an U of I professor in good standing for many years, interacting and sharing ideas with scores of people in academic and policy circles, do you think EVERY person who has crossed paths with him has unacceptable charcter? What about the administration of the U of I — I assume they should be removed from their jobs ?

McCain needs to find a DIFFERENT ISSUE –trying to make this electiom into a referendum on Ayers and the Weather Underground will not be a successful tactic. It will not resonate with voters.

Comment by Kelvin Hearts PUMAs | 2008-10-04 16:57:22

It’s the economy stupid. The Republican party has ruined America worse than any terrorist has. That’s reality, not those flimsy associations you keep whining about. McCain comes up with a real plan to fix the economy he can win. Otherwise the scorched earth tactics that he will try to employ will destroy his campaign.
