The only good thing is it isn’t going to discourage people as it’s set up to do this year, it will bring them out in force which will prove how skewed the polls this year were. The good thing is that may put an end to all the ones that were skewed, no one will trust/finance/sponser/support them anymore.

Fannie Mae fought reform very effectively with large cash payments to those who would oppose reform, Senator Obama and Senator Dodd took the lead in opposition and got the most cash of anyone. Republicans also took cash to oppose reform, but Senator McCain did not, and led the reformers. (He did take contributions from Fannie Mae employees who supported him, but none from the corporation).

Rep. Barney Frank strongly opposed Fannie Mae reform, took lots of cash, and even had an extended romantic relationship with a Fannie Mae executive. Under his leadership Congress required Fannie Mae to greatly increase lending to those who could never repay their loans. The US government knew years in advance of the abuses and that these abuses would result in the crisis we now have. Fannie Mae effectively traded cash (and sex) to avoid needed changes.

As Senator McCain warned in 2006: “For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac–known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs–and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.
