Ohio: Vote Early, Vote Often [Update]

Truthteller here: Although I disagree with Ohio’s new voter registration arrangement, I intend to register and vote tomorrow at one of the early voting locations in the state. Please contact voters in Ohio who oppose Obama, and ask them to register and vote tomorrow if they are not already registered. Tomorrow is the last day one can register to vote in the November election in Ohio.

“Vote Early and Often” takes on new meaning in the twisted and abused registration and voting process now underway in Ohio this year from September 30 through October 6. It is not as if Ohio, like Florida, has not seen its share of voting challenges in past elections, but it appears that they are out to outdo their past reputation to create a voting result that is not legit or reflective of the state’s residents.

  • A person can register to vote through October 6th, even without identification. You simply need to state that you are a citizen of the United States, will be 18 on or before the election date, a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days by election date, are not incarcerated for a felony, not declared incompetent for voting purposes, or have not been permanently disenfranchised for violations of the election laws. Although a valid Ohio driver’s license is requested for identification, one is not required. If not available, the last four digits of your Social Security number are requested, but not required. Thereafter, nothing is required but your signature (Voter Registration Instructions, Ohio Revised Code Section 3503.28 and Voter Registration Form).

  • Once you’ve registered, “Any qualified Ohio voter may request and vote an absentee ballot without stating a reason.” Thus, while still at the board of elections office, as an absentee voter (no reason required) you then “request, receive and vote your ballot” (Ohio Elections & Ballot Issues: Absentee Voting)
  • “Voters who do not have….identification, will still be able to vote by signing an affirmation swearing to the voter’s identity under penalty of election falsification and by casting a provisional ballot.” (Voter Registration Instructions, Ohio Revised Code Section 3503.28).

On August 13, Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner (D) set this up by issuing “a directive advising county elections boards that they must have procedures in place to allow voters who register to be immediately issued an absentee ballot.” (Associated Press, New Ohio Voter Registration Rules Irk GOP). Apparently only college towns were initially implementing this directive. And the AP reported that the Obama campaign was eagerly taking advantage of this. Obama spokesman Isaac Baker is quoted saying “This is one of many ways we’ll be encouraging our supporters to skip the lines on Election Day and make sure their vote is cast early.” Republicans question the loophole and its inconsistent implementation–not offering the same voting opportunity to rural and working-class voters. The loophole: Normally voter registration applications are subject to review before a voter registration card is issued (disputed Ohio law says a person must be registered 30 days prior to requesting an absentee ballot). As the AP notes, this lack of security and review raises fears of “massive voting fraud.”

As if voter fraud wasn’t a concern, Secretary of State Brunner has decided that counties may use their discretion about whether to allow poll watchers or not during registration and early voting. As the Wall Street Journal reports, poll watchers have been turned away in at least one location. But poll watchers are of limited value since even if allowed to observe, they are “no longer allowed to challenge voters at polling places, but may gather information to challenge them later.” With electronic voting, that makes challenges meaningless.

Former Ohio Secretary of State Jim Petro has spoken out against Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner’s recent directive against poll watchers:

[Update: removed link temporarily to see if display problem is cleared]

After October 6 through election day previously registered voters will be able to visit their local board of elections offices to vote. Again, without identification, without oversight of poll watchers.

Further undermining Ohio voting integrity, state law requires that election officials send out notices to registered voters 60 days before an election. NPR reports that as many as 600,000 were “returned as undeliverable”–e.g., the address was invalid or the named person did not reside at that address. While normally this would cause or permit challenge of the voter registration, Secretary of State Brunner decided this year that it would not. Thus, over half a million potentially fraudulent votes might be cast this year!

NPR also reports that as of September 30th, at least five lawsuits have been filed regarding Ohio’s voting process for this election. Lawsuits challenging same day registration and voting have now been thrown out. Likewise, the Wall Street Journal reports that lawsuits challenging poll watcher access have also been thrown out. Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, who previously pledged “complete transparency in the election process” is now fighting what she says are “expensive and time-consuming” lawsuits because of the lack of transparency she has created.

The Result?

The Obama campaign and supporters are dredging homeless shelters, halfway houses, soup kitchens, bars, and alleys for potential voters. Others, like Rock-the-Vote, are hitting up high schools. Numerous reports explain how these new voters are driven to the polls, coached on how to register and vote, then driven to locations of their choosing. Without registration integrity, nor requirement to even have identification, there is no way to know if the person is legally eligible to vote, nor if they have already voted. The likely result:

  • Under age voting
  • Non-resident voting
  • Felons voting
  • Repeat voting

Yes, in Ohio this year you can vote early and often.

Please don’t get me wrong. I firmly believe that every effort should be made to encourage and get eligible voters to become informed and cast their vote. But to set up a registration and voting process that does not provide security against fraudulent voting risks the integrity of the election process and the results. And then, to deny observers access to monitor the election removes the any legitimacy to the process.

I personally worked as an election precinct worker and precinct chief on behalf of the Democratic Party in Virginia for many years. We were trained by the office of elections, had rules in place to follow, had observers to monitor the process. I was very comfortable that I was part of a legitimate effort that resulted in an open and fair election. I am appalled by what is occurring at the state’s direction in Ohio.

Is the integrity of the Ohio vote being undermined?

The short answer is Yes. There are too many news and blog reports to list that tell and show problems with the voting. Will it throw the election? I don’t know. Will anyone be able to say so definitively? Probably not. But what will be indisputable is that the election results will be suspect.

bad news… go here, we saw the fraud during primary — they have the records up, and the electioneering.
In my opinion our system in CA is a fab one. Maybe McC can REFORM that part of things too, so all the states are fair, non-toe tag, non-Acorn?

we need a truth squad on that, no?

Sorry, but the voting system in CA is just about as corrupt as Ohio. You do not have to be 18 or a legal citizen but just check the box that says yes to these questions. In CA proof of voter identification can be a valid photo ID that is current (makes no further stipulation so any quasi/legal looking ID, such as company or school ID seems to be all you need) OR current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter (easy to phony this type of thing, ACORN probably travels with documents that can be used). If you live under a tree or bridge all you have to do is put an x on a map and give the names of cross streets. You can use a drivers license number as validation. Getting a drivers license in CA does not require proof of citizenship and I doubt they check age or other identifiers, just if the number exist. If you have no dl or ss# they will give you a unique ID number. And, These identification requirements only apply to elections in which there is a federal office on the ballot. And how many provisional ballots do you think they really bother to investigate in CA?

This is loke Cuba! Obama is our version of Fidel Castro. there should be set up legal challenges to provisional votes all prepared for filing on Nov.6th! BTW. Obama is probably s citizen of more than one country. It is obvious by the way he ALWAYS refers to the USA as this country. NEVER OUR COUNTRY!

Are we now geting to a point where whoever cheats the most efectively wins? The same methods are being used in my state and were used in the primary. When the unity pony goes lame, you just cheat. Damn, the Democrats seem to be trying to outdo the Republicans in voter fraud this time. At this rate the only recourse Pumas might have would be to give Canada an immigration problem. I have never been naive enough to believe that politics was lily pure, but this is just unbearable.

Comment by Perry Logan | 2008-10-06 05:38:34

Are we now geting to a point where whoever cheats the most efectively wins?

Beth, I believe that’s exactly what is going on. :(

This is my take on history. A group of bad Democrats—the Obama gang—got sick and tired of watching Republicans put degenerate traitors and incompetents into office, merely because Republicans cheat.

They decided to beat the Republicans at their own game. That’s what’s happening.

Needless to say, if the Democrats have started cheating in earnest, the Republicans don’t stand a chance.

This is outrageous. This is criminal. I cannot believe the Ohio Supreme Court went along with this.

I read some where that Ohio has 800,000 new registered voters this year. If 600,000 voter registration notices were returned as undeliverable then that means that 75% of these newly registered voters are most likely fraudulent.

“While normally this would cause or permit challenge of the voter registration, Secretary of State Brunner decided this year that it would not. Thus, over half a million potentially fraudulent votes might be cast this year!”

And the above is the most unbelievable and outrageous of all. Challenges of these registrations should be allowed. I cannot believe this is happening in America.

HELP!!!!!!! SOS!!!!!!!!!

Comment by jbjd | 2008-10-05 22:56:24

The OH supreme court evidently interpreted OH law to allow this outcome. (Hint: in most state laws I reviewed, the Secretary of State is given jurisdiction over elections in the state. This includes promulgating any rules and regulations necessary to carry out these elections. The OH S of S, an ardent supporter of BO, assumed jurisdiction under the law to oversee elections in her state. And the OH supreme court evidently found she had carried out her ministerial duties and exercised her discretion in a way that was neither capricious and arbitrary; nor contrary to law.

OH voters must now, through their elected representatives, change the law.

(This decision by state courts does not preclude federal action, based on alleged violations of federally protected rights.)

Comment by bert | 2008-10-06 06:57:13

I just checked my Ohio notification card, mailed to me, telling me I am registered to vote and my polling location.

On the back of it it says, “Voters must bring identification to the polls in order to verify identity….”

So based on this post, I, who registered ahead of time, have to provide ID, but same day registration-voters, or homeless people, get to vote without ID. ???? !!!!! ????

Observers at these same day locations were turned away. Are observers going to be allowed to watch when these votes are counted to make sure that citizenship and identity are validated? And who checks out of state college kids? There are more than 5 colleges in Columbus and within an hour of OSU. Are they voting in both this state and their home state by absentee ballot, thus voting twice?

I feel like a second class citizen in my own state and country. I play by the rules and I have to show ID.

And the conservative Ohio Supreme Court approves of this? I am beginning to fell like I live in a banana state.

Wake up, ACORN, MoveOn.org, Rock The Vote, etc. are all Dem backed “community organizations” that have been illegally registering people for years and years. They particularly have been active in neighborhoods where it is common knowlege that illegal aliens live. They were even caught on tape years ago in the Mission District in San Franciso telling the people in Spanish that they did not have to prove citizenship so just check the box that says you are. I have been furious all these years about this situation. The courts do nothing with the evidence and the “community organizations” just blame the individuals who were working for them (most of whom cannot be found when the truth comes out).

There has to be something that can be done about this. I hear the former secretary of State of Ohio ask for election observers. I’d be happy to do this. Can’t we call in people from other contries to observe our election and see what a farce it has become?

Comment by Matthew Weaver | 2008-10-05 21:57:35

Problem is the current Sec’y of State has reinterpreted the law as to allow counties to not permit observers. So far the GOP has not been able to reverse this. I wonder why the ACLU, maybe even Jimmy Carter hasn’t gotten involved? Especially the latter as he has made a great reputation by going around and observing elections.

Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner is an insult to the integrity of the office she holds. The Buckeye state and our country deserve better. Like Sen Claire Caskill and her Obama goon squads in Missouri, Brunner is marching in lock step with Caskill’s fuhrer and his SS neo-nazi Obamacratic party. These so called “leaders” are pathetic. They should be given a cram course in totalitarianism, but by all appearances, they don’t need one. They’re already entrenched in it. I no longer recognize the United States of America.

There is no way the Republicans in Ohio are going to just look the other way.

Touchet-
I have wondered the same thing about issues pertaining to Africa- especially when I found out that Dr Susan Rice was brought on as a political advisor to Sen Obama.

Speculation on my part BUT:
SEN OBAMA HAS NEVER BEEN ASKED, NOR HAS HE VOLUNTEERED HIS POSITION ON REPARATIONS FOR SLAVERY.

I was disturbed during the primary as to why Sen. Obama & his campaign always kept bringing up race in this race.

I believed that this race should be about votes-his votes in Congress.

I posted a ‘Shout out’ to Sen Obama and his campaign- This is what I wrote:

Sen Obama, if you want to keep this public discourse on the topic of race, then I will oblige one more time so that we can hopefully FINALLY move on to your voting record in Congress-where you have consistently sabotaged attempts to solve problems that affect middle class Americans.

Is it true that you supported 3rd ward Ald. Dorothy Tillman in her runoff (which she ultimately lost) against independent Pat Dowell” last year?

http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/obamacommentary/309639,CST-EDT-MILL23.stng#

SunTimes Commentary- “Will 3rd Ward politics affect Obama’s presidential race? ” by Rich Miller 3/23/07
Ms Tillman has an impressive record in the civil rights movement-no doubt.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Tillman

She is also one of the leading and outspoken U.S advocates of reparations for slavery.

What is your position on reparations for slavery in the U.S?

What about reparations for slavery from western, ex-colonial powers for Africa and African nations? I understand that during the 2001 UN-sponsored World Conference against Racism, many African nations demanded an apology-plus other things- from ex-colonial European nations for the role they (European nations) had in promoting the slave trade.

http://archives.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/africa/09/01/durban.slavery/index.html

“Africa calls for slavery apology” , cnn.com, 9/0/01

“DURBAN, South Africa — African leaders have called on the U.S. and Europe to apologize for their part in the colonial slave trade but are divided on whether to insist on reparations.”

Interesting article (see below) which may allow us to infer what Sen Obama’s position on reparations issue MIGHT BE:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/128633/page/1

“When Barry Became Barack” by Richard Wolffe, Jessica Ramirez and Jeffrey Bartholet

NEWSWEEK 3/31/08 Issue

I found this story very interesting however I was quiet surprised when I reached the last page.

The author recounted a story that was passed on to Sen Obama by white family members concerning an incident at a waikiki bar involving Sen Obama’s bio-dad Barry Sr.

“Barry’s white grandfather and several other Hawaiian friends take Barry Sr. to a Waikiki bar. It’s a joyous scene, everyone eating and drinking “to the sounds of a slack-key guitar,” when a white man with a booming voice announces to the bartender that he shouldn’t have to drink “next to a nigger.” The stunned clientele expects a fight. But Barry Sr. smiles and quietly lectures the man “about the folly of bigotry, the promise of the American dream, and the universal rights of man.”

In response, the shamed white man gives Barry Sr. $100, in apparent payment for his sin of racism. Even the young Obama found the tale hard to believe.

But many years later, he recalls in “Dreams From My Father,” he got a phone call from a Japanese-American man who had been a classmate of Barry Sr.’s in Hawaii. Unprompted, the man told Obama the same story.

Obama says he was struck by the man’s tone of “disbelief—and hope.”

************

P.S I cant confirm this however I had heard somewhere that John Conyers was working on a bill in Congress to help make this (reparations for slavery) happen.

Can anyone confirm or refute this & PLEASE provide source link.

After October 6 through election day previously registered voters will be able to visit their local board of elections offices to vote. Again, without identification, without oversight of poll watchers.

If you have been experiencing display issues, please reload the page and see if it is now resolved. I removed the audio clip before the Oct 6 paragraph where at least one person reported seeing a problem. If this resolves or does not resolve your problem, please reply here. Here’s the post suggested by Woman Voter

“THE ILLUSION OF BARACK OBAMA”…A Must-Read from The Australian

http://insightanalytical.wordpress.com/2008/10/05/the-illusion-of-barack-obamaa-must-read-from-the-australian/

It includes a reference/link to piece in juxtaposition published later than this one in The Australian by Phillip Adams of Radio Australia after I contacted him protesting an omission in a broadcast interview which included a discussion of Obama. His piece was incredibly disrespectful toward John McCain, the rant of a an aging radical….

I don’t understand how Ohio can do this. It’s so unfair to their voters. How can you verify a homeless person isn’t really being bussed in from out of state even?

Putting up with this kind of crap is getting really OLD!!

Comment by K Bentley | 2008-10-05 23:10:39

This is just so stupid. FL and MI were disqualified because they voted early? Why dosen’t the FEC disqualify OH for suspected voting practices? I believe if any state doesn’t try to at lease perform a valid registration and voting practice, Federal funds should be sanctioned against them.

Comment by Touchet | 2008-10-06 00:48:53

maybe this is the plan, you ever thought of that.

http://www.pollster.com/blogs/50_8_and_october_some_historic.php

Saturday’s Gallup tracking poll revealed two big numbers for Obama. Obama hit 50% in the tracking poll and took an 8% lead over McCain. This isn’t the first time that Obama has hit the 50% mark, and it isn’t the first time he has held a lead of 8%; but now we are in the last month of the campaign and numbers like these in October usually mean electoral success in November.

Using Gallup’s compendium of presidential trial heat polling since 1936, I counted 16 candidates who received 50% support or higher in an October Gallup
poll. Hitting the 50% mark was a very good predictor of victory. Of those 16 candidates, just two failed to win the general election–Al Gore and Thomas Dewey.

Now we should factor in 50% +8 a week *after* the first debate…

Bush had the first debate, all the firsts are gone in this race.

===========================================

I think the difference is that Gore, Dewey, whomever weren’t CRIMINALS who associate with TERRORISTS and CONVICTED FELONS. I still have high hopes that everything disgusting about Obama will make people change their votes. It’s less than a month, but we can do it. I have never believed this country is so f**king stupid that they would let that Muslim terrorist in the White House.

Bush was the worst president ever. Obama doesn’t even have to try hard and he’ll be better than him.

No worries, Obama won’t need to even break a sweat because he’s not going near the WH unless he takes a tour.

Could the federal government be brought into to investigate whether out of state people are being bussed into Ohio for early voting and registration? Don’t things go under federal jurisdiction when they cross state lines?

Hey NoQuarter sorry for the Off Topic but John Kass is out with some advice for McCain

John Kass, Chicago Tribune: Obama and the Chicago Way

Going into Tuesday’s presidential debate, the campaign of Republican John McCain still suffers from the lousy economy and that Bush hanging ponderously from his neck.

With that going against him, he’s running uphill, trying to remind Americans that he challenged his own party, and the Democrats, on corruption. Because of McCain’s opposition to politicians who feed from the public trough, there is a road open to him Tuesday. It’s the Chicago Way.

Obama definitely does not want to go there. It would be a forced march for him. Obama’s gauzy references to Chicago involve baseball and where he met Michelle and those blissful hours he spent as a community organizer. What he doesn’t want discussed is his evolution from independent Democrat to potential White House enabler of the corrupt Chicago Democratic machine.

The Chicago Way is a road the Beltway media establishment dare not travel. It must frighten them. It conflicts with their fairy tale about Obama as reformer, and they’re much too busy rummaging through garbage cans in Alaska to bother about Chicago’s political alleys.

While you are all circle-jerking about Hannity’s hit piece tonight, Obama is about to lower the boom on McCain’s Keating 5 days.

All’s fair in the guilt by association game, eh?

Hey Troll, nice try. McCain was cleared of all of that nonsense a long time ago. Boy is THAT a big fat act of DESPERATION by Obama. ROFLMAO.

Good lord, McCain ran against George Bush. Everyone knows that old story. If that’s all the terrorist lover has got….I say bring it on!

Comment by Perry Logan | 2008-10-06 05:55:36

Speaking of character assassination, let’s not forget that BY FAR the most awful smears ever made against John McCain were put out by his fellow Republicans. :(

Remember how a group of pro-Bush Republicans disseminated scrofulous smears against John McCain in the 2000 primary? The Republicans were smearing a Viet Nam War hero to win a primary.

Of course, they then went on to smear another Viet Nam hero—John Kerry–in 2004. I don’t know why Republicans hate Viet Nam vets so much.

Anyway, it’s was things like this that have convinced me that–for all their protestations of patriotism–Republicans are basically traitors.

The years 2000-2006 have confirmed this belief. I was hoping for a decent Democrat like Hillary to get in there and get these people out of our government, but the Obama people hit us with a club.

Comment by Jeremiah God Damn Barack Amerikkka Wright | 2008-10-06 06:11:16

Its unfortunate Obama doesn’t have any outstanding or heroic service to his country in his short and murky history that speaks about his love for or service to country that can be swiftboated.

Looks like those dirty Republicans are out of luck since Obama is so clean.

The actions in Ohio are exactly what has been causing the accusations from Republicans of voter fraud resulting in the strictest litmus test for voting coming out of states like mine, Florida.
I never understood the accusations before regarding voter fraud. I know, in Florida, we now have to show our Drivers license to vote and our address better match what is on the voter roll. The registration card we receive is worth nothing. Many here don’t have D.L.’s and therefore can’t vote. Ohio’s decision will result in MORE voter disenfranchisement after this election cycle. And frankly, now I understand why.
