Once the election has been held and a winner has been determined, should something happen to the President-elect, I believe the VP-elect becomes the President-elect and assumes the office of President on 1/20. Presumably, the VP office would be vacant until the new President selects a new VP. I did a quick check at www.constitution.net and found the legal answer. The 20th Amendment (which moved the start of the Presidential and Congressional terms from March to January) states, in Section 3: <em>If, at the time fixed for the beginning of the term of the President, the President elect shall have died, the Vice President elect shall become President.
