Sleeper Cell: ACORN, Obama, and the Housing Crisis

Before ACORN became a household name, Larry Johnson and Eastan McNeal reported that the Obama campaign has been funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to a shady ACORN shell corporation called Citizens Services, Inc. New information, including the photo above, proves that Obama’s past denials of his relationship with ACORN are not the truth.
According to the Leftist Dissent Magazine, the nebulous term, “community organizing,” has shaped Barack Obama:
Although he didn’t make community organizing a lifetime career—he left Chicago to attend Harvard Law School—Obama often says that his organizing experience has shaped his approach to politics.

Since embarking on a political career, Obama hasn’t forgotten the lessons that he learned on the streets of Chicago.
Although Obama claims to never have been associated with ACORN, except when he was retained as their attorney, his community organizing experience is indistinguishable from ACORN’s mission:
In 1985, at age 23, Obama was hired by the Developing Communities Project, a coalition of churches on Chicago’s South Side, to help empower residents to win improved playgrounds, after-school programs, job training, housing, and other concerns affecting a neighborhood hurt by large-scale layoffs from the nearby steel mills and neglect by banks, retail stores, and the local government.
ACORN’s mission is to force governments and businesses, by threat of lawsuits and harassment, to support their agenda of obtaining the maximum services from government, coercing corporations to finance their projects, and forcing banks to approve high-risk loans. Additionally, ACORN works on voter registration issues and is suspected in mass voter fraud. This should be of special concern to the supporters of Hillary Clinton, many of whom witnessed caucus fraud during the primary season.
Stanley Kurtz details that ACORN may be at fault for much of the housing crisis we are now experiencing. Kurtz writes:
While the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act did call on banks to increase lending in poor and minority neighborhoods, its exact requirements were vague, and therefore open to a good deal of regulatory interpretation. Banks merger or expansion plans were rarely held up under CRA until the late 1980s, when ACORN perfected its technique of filing CRA complaints in tandem with the sort of intimidation tactics perfected by that original “community organizer” (and Obama idol), Saul Alinsky.
Kurtz states that Obama, in his position on the board of the Woods Fund and the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC) — both with domestic terrorist and Obama benefactor Bill Ayers — funneled large sums of money to ACORN:
as a director at Chicago’s Woods Fund, Obama was successfully pushing for a major expansion of assistance to Acorn, and sending still more money Acorn’s way from his post as board chair of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. Through both funding and personal-leadership training, Obama supported Acorn. And Acorn, far more than we’ve recognized up to now, had a major role in precipitating the subprime crisis.
It’s become apparent that ACORN is serving as Obama’s red-shirted shock troops for voter “outreach,” a euphemism for the mass voter registration fraud witnessed up to this point in the election. ACORN will do for voting integrity what they did for mortgage lending.
According to Obama’s “Fight the Smears” Web Site, he was never an organizer for ACORN:
Regardless of what the Web site says, Obama’s ties to ACORN go much further than simply writing the group large checks from CAC in his role as Bill Ayers’ toady. Although “Fight the Smears” says that Obama was not an organizer for ACORN, he was an attorney for an ACORN’s voter registration project.
However, in May of this year, Stanley Kurtz discovered that Obama and ACORN have a much closer connection:
While most press accounts imply that Obama just happened to be at the sort of public-interest law firm that would take Acorn’s “motor voter” case, Foulkes claims that Acorn specifically sought out Obama’s representation in the motor voter case, remembering Obama from the days when he worked with Talbot. And while many reports speak of Obama’s post-law school role organizing “Project VOTE” in 1992, Foulkes makes it clear that this project was undertaken in direct partnership with Acorn. Foulkes then stresses Obama’s yearly service as a key figure in Acorn’s leadership-training seminars.
Further, John Fund of the Wall Street Journal, elaborates that Obama was an attorney for ACORN, trained ACORN activists, and dispensed funds to ACORN:
In 1995, then GOP Gov. Jim Edgar refused to implement the federal “Motor Voter” law. Allowing voters to register using only a postcard and blocking the state from culling voter rolls, he argued, could invite fraud. Mr. Obama sued on behalf of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, and won. Acorn later invited Mr. Obama to help train its staff; Mr. Obama would also sit on the board of the Woods Fund for Chicago, which frequently gave this group grants.
Kurtz lays the collapse of the mortgage giants squarely at the feet of ACORN:
Up to now, conventional wisdom on the financial meltdown has relegated ACORN and the CRA to bit parts. The real problem, we’ve been told, lay with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In fact, however, ACORN is at the base of the whole mess. ACORN used CRA and Democratic sympathizers to entangle Fannie and Freddie and the entire financial system in a disastrous disregard of the most basic financial standards. And Barack Obama cut his teeth as an organizer and politician backing up ACORN’s economic madness every step of the way.
In a prescient article from 1998, entitled Capitalist Wealth Underwrites Assaults on Middle America’s Values, Robert Holland reports that ACORN received funding from Fannie Mae and other banks and that ACORN then pressured the federal government to force banks to make high-risk loans:
Corporate leaders may be dispensing this aid in the belief it will curry favor with radical groups, or they may calculate that regulation will favor their business’ interests over competitors. Some of the giving, however, just seems spectacularly misguided: For example, Bank America, Chase Manhattan, and Fannie Mae contributed $315,000 to ACORN (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), an outfit that threatens financial institutions with federal sanctions if they fail to issue high-risk loans at bargain rates to borrowers of ACORN’s choosing.
Matthew Weaver originally uncovered this photograph of Obama and The Rev. Michael L. Pfleger protesting payday loans in January 2000.
The caption from NBC 5 photograph does not detail who sponsored the protest. It’s striking, however, that one of ACORN’s primary missions is protesting payday loans. And the yellow signs are ubiquitous in nearly all photographs of ACORN from this period:
The caption reads: “ACORN members demand fair lending, not predatory lending! This march was part of ACORN’s National Convention in Philadelphia, Summer 2000.”
The protest in Chicago attended by Obama and The Rev. Pfleger was likely an ACORN-related event, and significant enough for Pfleger to list the protest on his Curriculum Vitae:
What’s interesting about Pfleger’s CV, in addition to the prominence placed on the lending protest, are the other two actions. In a period of one month, Pfleger was actively attempting to ban Indian bidis cigarettes (with Obama) and coordinating efforts with Rev. Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam.
But Obama’s ties with Pfleger did not end with fighting payday loans and exotic cigarettes, Pfleger is close to Farrakhan and Obama attended Farrakhan’s Million Man March:
Obama was apparently at Farrakhan’s Million Man March, although his precise attitude toward the march is in dispute
Regardless of Obama’s proximity to Farrakhan, he continues to embrace the resurgent far-Left.
Dissent reports that Obama employs Marshall Ganz of Harvard to lead “Camp Obama,” a Saul Alinsky-inspired, ACORN-like retreat for the training of Obama organizers:
Obama enlisted Marshall Ganz, a Harvard professor who is one of the country’s leading organizing theorists and practitioners, to help train organizers and volunteers as a key component of his presidential campaign. Ganz was instrumental in shaping the volunteer training experience.
Many Obama campaign volunteers went through several days of intense training sessions called “Camp Obama.” The sessions were led by Ganz and other experienced organizers
Ganz is a respected organizer and academic with long-term associations with ACORN. He was also a member of the Howard Dean campaign.
In an article last year on Talking Points Memo, Ganz notes that recent elections have been remarkably close and that organizing will decide this year’s election. Using Alinsky as his model, he proposes a grass-roots campaign to win in 2008.
Barack Obama, a man we know little truth about, was forced onto the Democratic Party by far-Left activists and obsequious Party elders. ACORN is engaged in fraudulent voter registration on behalf of Obama, and the leader of “Camp Obama” tells us clearly that this election will be about organizing. Obama’s close relationship with ACORN, as documented by Kurtz,
a bit of digging into Obama’s years in the Illinois State Senate indicates strong concern with Acorn’s signature issues, as well as meetings with Acorn and the introduction by Obama of Acorn-friendly legislation on the living wage and banking practices. You begin to wonder whether, in his Springfield days, Obama might have best been characterized as “the Senator from Acorn.”
This is a frightening thought when you consider that ACORN is much to blame for the housing crisis we’re now experiencing. And it’s not surprising that the Obama campaign’s strong-arm tactics, inspired by Alinsky and perfected by ACORN, have made the Democratic Party foreign to so many of its loyal base.

You are correct…Here in the mildly fascist state of TEXAS…NO ID = ALIEN…I lost my wallet and I couldn’t do dick until I got it all replaced…
But will that keep someone from voting in multiple precincts? what if I’m registered to vote in six or eight places? How does Location B know that I have already voted in Location A? What if I gave phony addresses for these locations?
In WNC we’ve had a bit of problem, or so I’m told, with people from out of state registering to vote here because they own property, then voting in their home state and voting here.
Nothing at this time! That is the problem and this is how BO won the primaries. Bus everyone around and have them vote under different names. I have to have ID to vote. Always have no matter where I have lived.
I think all the computers would need to be linked and the poll workers on the ball to check the system BEFORE the individual votes. There should be a way to place a stop in the system if there is already a vote in place for a person.
I personally think anyone registered under ACORN should be dumped NOW! Make then register on day they vote at the court house, show ID and place in absenti pile. This is what they were going to make me do when I did not appear on the rolls. Even though I had gone to the courthous and filled out my form. Luckily they found me and I was ok. But if this is what I had to go through then why cant other states do the same thing?

its a fine line between stopping voter fraud and unintentionally causing voter disenfranchisement.
Many of the liberal blogs are spinning the attempt to prevent voter fraud as a “Republican” party attempt to prevent African American voters from voting.
Voter fraud can be initiated by ANYONE, ANY PARTY, DURING ANY STAGE OF THE REGISTRATION AND/OR VOTING PROCESS.

I’m outraged hearing these stories of ACORN and voter fraud. What gets me more is how this news isn’t triggering mass outrage with more Americans. Are Americans so cynical toward government that we accept cheating and fraud as part of our new culture? The end never justifies the crooked means. Obama is deep into this and the details are just beginning to surface. I think every single ACORN registration form should be suspended and not counted until verified. If there is not enough time by the election, then it just doesn’t count. Most of them are not valid anyway. All Obama and Acorn have done is create a deeper climate for low income people to think they should get something for nothing and it is ok to use all means no matter how dishonest and unfair it is, to get it. OT, Dow is down 600 points already this morning, below 8000. McCain needs to go into this next debate and expose Obama, his ties to Acorn, and how they are directly tied into this mortgage crisis. People are not worried about Rezko, Ayers or Wright. They are worried about the economy. McCain needs to detail that Democrats would not pass regulations in 2006, McCain co-sponsered a bill in 2005, Obama has taken tons of money, he needs to keep hitting on this and hit hard.

As a prosecutor, I knew (and all prosecutors knew) that we had the advantage of money on our side – the government funded our cases. Well financed defendants capitulate for many reasons. They were talking about this on Fox last night. NOt this specific case but how they do this. They go in and harrass the bank demanding that they give the loan to the borrower regaurdless of their ability to pay. Not sure what they use against them but they generally get their way.
This angers me since when we qualified for our home loan we had to qualify for the morgage. It was a VA loan and very strict. A neighbor down the street bopught a house for 30,000 more then ours. They had minimum wage jobs and no money down. I could not understand how they did this. Now it is all to clear and I am mad!! This should not be allowed to happen and now all of us will be punished due to a few bad eggs.
As a registered Democrat for 34 years, I’ve have had a really hard time accepting the behavior by the Democrats this year. How could the party that was above all of this behavior stoop to stealing an primary election from one of their own? McCain was my second choice after Hillary and it appears that in order to ensure that Obama’s hands are tied should he get elected, I am going to have to vote Republican straight down the line. I am not alone in my opinions per my friends and family. I usually vote for candidates and not their party — although usually that means mostly Democrats. Not this year. I trust John McCain leading the Republicans much moreso that Obama leading the Democrats.

I will vote mainly republicain except for my Governor who is awesome. It is a bi-partisan ticket and they work well together. Our state also has a 78 million dollar surplus which is great since we are headed into a depression.
I understand the need to vote REP, but we need to make sure the candidates on the ballot are not just as bad as the dems. Do we not risk behaving just like the Obots if we do not clearly think about who we vote for? Bi-partisan is the way to go… electing those individuals with stong credintials and proven track records. You know off the subjects a bit, I just realize something, while listening to how everyone is saying no one seem to be voting for obama. I live in a black neighborhood in south carolina, and there is not one obama sign in our yard. I’ve seen signs for clyburn, hell even the guy that running for the state legislator, but where are all the obama banners. Seem like their should be a sign on on ever lawn. God i’m a obliviousl. This is weird.But i guess when you know you have 4000 dead people voting for you who needs the living.
Stories like yours are posted all over the place. I’ve read several posts where McCain/Palin signs outnumber Obama signs sometimes 3 to 1. I’m trying to figure out where all of the Obama ’support’ really is.
Is the overwhelming support actually there? Or is it a media and Obama campaign lie?
I’m starting to think it’s the latter.
It seems the media and polls are basing his lead on the large number of newly registered Democrats; however, that statistic may prove to be largely irrelevant when the broad scope of ACORN’s illegal registrations are factored in.
Basically, there are not as many new dems as they’d like to think- not, live, eligible voters anyway.
That’s what I think is making the polls so wacky. There is simply too big of a difference between some of the state polls coming out and the national number.
Battleground is supposedly a very solid polling company. Yesterday they had McCain 3 points behind. Now, how the heck do you get from there to 15 points behind in PA?
The pollsters must be over-sampling Democrats based on the registrations.
However, ACORN can’t be so big of a part of this that its throwing the polls off THAT much. I mean…come on. Fraudulant, yes. I understand their volunteers and can imagine how many are just making up crud.
But the polls are looking very bad right now. It really is starting to look like a landslide for Obama.
What worries me is that the people who submit multiple voter registrations will vote in multiple counties/districts. How will that be prevented?

The other day, I posted a story from the National Review about the extremely LOW voter turnout in Ohio last week.
According to the article, about 8.2 million people registered to vote in Ohio this year as Democrats. In addition, new voters were allowed to register & vote the same day from Sept. 30 - Oct. 6 under the new voting laws put in place after the mess at their polls in the 2004 election. The new laws heavily favored Democrats. But only about 28,000 people voted! That’s a strong blow to Obama’s campaign - as he definitely needs Ohio in order to win.
It’s definitely likely that voter turnout for Obama throughout the country will be much lower on Election Day than anticipated.

I’m aware of that activity. But that is way too long ago to have triggered the current crisis.
The predatory lending practices is relatively new. And nobody forced the banks into those hideous types of loans.
Interesting side-note. I heard a realtor last night say that she had about 125 houses in foreclosure on her books. She only has 4 or 5 which were actually owned by the people living in the houses. In other words, a lot of investor houses.
I don’t know if that’s reflective of my area’s problem or not. Just thought it was interesting.
It is important to understand what happened. Fannie and Freddie used to have set credit standards. ACORN was effective at forcing local banks to approve the bad loans but the banks had a limit. That limit was set by Fannie and Freddie since Fannie and Freddie would not buy bad loans. So ACORN lobbied Fannie and Freddie to lower their standards. It was like a genie taken out of the bottle. Once the standards were lowered, which is what happened in the mid-late 90s, the market forces went to work. Before ACORN’s lobbying activities, abetted primarily by Democrats in congress, all the bad subprime loans that overburdened the system could not have occurred.
That part I get. I’ve said all along, the culprit here were Democrats who backed the deregulation of Freddie and Fannie.
MY drum I beat is that Democrats aren’t taking accountability for this and blaming it all on Republicans. OK, great campaign tactic if you can pull it off.
BUT……the lack of truthfulness and accountability here must be addressed. They have raped people’s retirements here. This is important.
But nobody has to go sell some complex story about ACORN to get that message out.
What appears to be happening is that nobody cares right now. They are just in a panic.
Well the news has to get out somehow. We are very seriously looking at a big crisis. Steve Diamond (www.globallabor.blogspot.com), who as we all know is no friend of Obama, is openly suggesting the possibility of the suspension of the election and the constitution because of the crisis. We have to remember that Steve, though very anti-Obama, is a LEFT-WING writer. So his assumptions about how things will play out are based on leftist interpretations of economics, politics, etc. So he is instructive of the kind of fear that will no doubt be used by Obama’s machine if it wins.

Obama Sidesteps Reform in Illinois

For those of you who still cling to the fantasy that Barack Obama is “about change,” you should note how he, or his minions, want nothing to do with reforming politics in Illinois, perhaps the most corrupt state in the Union.
“Throughout his political career, Barack Obama has fought for open and honest government,” proclaims his campaign Web site. Apparently, no longer. When the Democratic presidential candidate–now his party’s industrial-strength voice for our deliverance from political corruption everywhere–was asked by a reformer if he would help get his political mentor back home to get off the dime and move the most minimal of state ethics legislation toward passage, the Obama campaign sent word back that amounted to a “no.”
State Sen. Emil Jones (D-Chicago) is the Chicago machine politician who might have been most instrumental in jump-starting Obama’s political career. Now, as Illinois Senate president, Jones is the one sitting on the reform legislation, refusing to call it for an expected favorable vote before it officially dies of neglect.
Jones is the pal of Gov. Rod Blagojevich, no friend of reform, who used his amendatory veto power to change the legislation after it passed both houses so that Jones would get another chance to kill it.
If all that’s confusing, welcome to Illinois politics, where intricacy is the best camouflage for chicanery. Suffice to say, neither Blagojevich nor Jones is working for reform.
So, along comes Cindi Canary, director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, thinking that now might be a good time for Obama to parlay his friendship with Jones to do a good deed: Won’t you intervene with Jones and try to get him to call the Senate back into session to get this law passed? “[T]his is a place [Obama] could come in and quickly clean up some of the damage and serve his state,” she told the Chicago Sun-Times. After all, her group and Obama worked together during those halcyon days when he actually supported reform in Illinois, so maybe he’ll be receptive to a plea to intervene on behalf of Illinois folks who have been getting gouged for years by the likes of Jones. “A 30-second phone call to the Illinois Senate president could yield huge dividends to this state,” she said.
In response, Obama’s campaign issued an oozy statement reaffirming Obama’s alleged commitment to reform, while getting no more specific than urging everyone to get together and love one another right now. What Canary was asking Obama for wasn’t all that much. Maybe a 30-second phone call to back up his usual pap of, “Look, ah, I’ve, ah, always been for, ah, reform.” For most people, the reform that we’re talking about is so basic that they might ask, “You mean it’s not illegal already?”
The legislation would make illegal the widespread abuse called pay-to-play politics, by which companies doing business with the state contribute to the state official in charge of ladling out contracts. The new law wouldn’t let you do it if you have more than $50,000 in state contracts, which, even at that, leaves open a nice loophole. In Illinois, this is a huge leap forward from how things are done. Blagojevich, who has reaped bundles of cash from state contractors, could be one of the pols most jolted by the prohibition. That explains why he rewrote the legislation in a way that would make it ineffective and why the House overwhelmingly rejected his changes.
Jones now is the only one standing in the way of the reform, with Obama abetting.
Here’s another example of how Obama has revealed himself to be a creature of the Chicago machine. Who can forget his silence when he could have affirmed his reformer credentials by endorsing Democrat Forrest Claypool over machine creature Todd Stroger as Cook County Board president? When things got too hot, Obama severed his ties from his racially inflammatory pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. That’s not too hard; you can always find another pastor.
But betraying your political godfather(s) in Chicago and Illinois is an entirely different matter. Especially if you lose the presidential election and return to being just another senator from Illinois. Cutting his ties with the corrupt Chicago machine is one bridge you will not see Obama burn. Not now, not ever.

Acorn registration efforts were in the minority and poor areas and do you remember the high turnout. It does appear that some of Obama’s winning states were stolen and not won honestly.

She has been in court a lot. She won one case then she lost a case where she was trying to throw out republican registrations, 1800 I think, because a box was not checked, it is not required to be checked.
There are only 6 days left and she is trying to run out the clock. That is why she is appealing the judges decision. Once they take the absentee ballots out of the envelope there is no way to see if it is a valid vote or not.
In some ways I feel sorry for Obama, he had a whoring mother and deadbeat dad, both with radical views. With those kind of parents, no kid will have chance to grow up decent.
I grew up with a father beating me physically and a wife beater, and I turned out to be a pretty good citizen and love G-d more than life itself. It is what you have in your heart that makes you the person you will be in the future. Obama choose corruption. Don’t feel sorry at all for him in my view.

All of Obama’s bloggers, caucus organizers and many other supporters actions during the primary have a common theme and blueprint. Overwhelm, intimidate, create chaos, badger, and lie. Sure sounds like he has ACORN at the core of his campaign, if not physically, philosophically.
Yes, a lot of online tactics by Obama supporters are explained by the Alinsky method of “get(ting) in their faces” and by any means necessary.
The links are very real, not supposed. The caucus fraud, especially in Nevada but surely the same elsewhere, was perpetrated using Alinksy agitation methods (Obama’s specialty) employed in particular by groups such as SEIU. For those who do not know, SEIU is a union which ACORN openly refers to on it’s website as the labor wing of ACORN. SEIU is also notable for being involved in what is essentially a power war among unions between those who follow and Alinskyite philosophy and a power structure similar to Maoist cadres, and those which follow a traditional, democratic model. SEIU and similar union partners are now actively campaigning to change the voting structures within the unions into something modelled on the open-voting caucus structure that allows for intimidation and dominatin of the voting process through outright thuggery. Steve Diamond, who is a labor expert, documents the authoritarian shift in unions like SEIU at his blog (www.globallabor.blogspot.com). If anyone hasn’t read Steve, I strongly recommend it. He’s one of the most authoritative writers around on the Obama-Ayers connection.

Nah, I think its socialism in a free market. You can’t have both, they work against each other. The government wanted people to own houses that couldn’t afford them, but instead of paying for them to begin with, or giving a tax cut, whatever, they thought that they would do this quasi-socialism and the market would recover from it. I for one am not eating out except on special occassions. Then it is the cheap places. My family does not buy the new games or dvds, we rent them from netlfix. I rarely buy shoes or cloths and have to budget hard to repair the car. We go to free places for recreation and do not venture far from home due to the gas. We still pay 3.35 a gallon and now that winter has officially started the electric bill will sky rocket.
My family is feeling the pinch. The economy is headed into the gutter just like it did in the great depression. On this subject I will have to disagree with you. Hopefully it will stabilize itself, but it might not be real soon

It was a common problem. These groups, such as ACORN and other activists groups, fought long and hard to get those removed.
Now, we have the reverse problem.
I choose to not worry over this too much. There’s a small amount of fraud in every election.
We’ll never get it perfect.
I am glad the issue of false registrations has been raised. It’s a burden to the counties to check all those registrations. ACORN needs to either clean up its act or get out of that business entirely.
And, frankly, I think that would be a shame. Voting is a responsibility of all citizens, even if the election doesn’t go “my” way.
