The Beavis and Butthead school of journalism strikes again

By Violet Socks, originally published at Reclusive Leftist.

Last weekend Slate Magazine, a Washington Post subsidiary, featured on the front page of its website a cartoon showing Sarah Palin on a stool wearing a skimpy red dress, breasts popping out, with a bible squeezed between her bare thighs. In the accompanying article, The Sexy Puritan, author Tom Perrotta mused aloud that Sarah Palin was emblematic of a new breed of Christian women who alternately boast about their pre-marital virginal purity and, once properly wed, titillate their spouses with “anal sex, fisting, and ‘masturbating for your husband.’”

Got that?

Right. Basically the article is about the contents of Tom Perrotta’s head, not anything Sarah Palin has ever done, said, or symbolized.

The New Agenda, the new non-partisan women’s rights group, sent a strongly worded letter to David Plotz, the current editor of Slate Magazine, protesting the publication of the article:

…Perrotta implies that Governor Palin has cultivated “sexiness” in service of her conservative Christian agenda. This is tantamount to claiming that she is “asking for” the graphic sexual imagery which he uses to illustrate his point…In truth, Governor Palin has done nothing to warrant such spurious comparisons, and Perrotta is merely employing the time-honored tactic of using gratuitous and vulgar sexual imagery to demean and discredit a woman in a position of power while implying that she is complicit in her own degradation.

…Have you no shame, Mr. Plotz? As the editor of Slate Magazine, you are responsible for its content, and it is our opinion at The New Agenda that your publishing of articles of this nature about Governor Palin is a calculated attempt to demean her, perhaps in order to compensate for the fact that, as your wrote in your own article, “night after night, she appears in my dreams, always as a scolding, ominous figure.” It should be apparent to all that your and Perrotta’s visions of Sarah Palin have everything to do with your own imaginations, and nothing to do with the actual woman.

In response, David Plotz sent the following reply, which lacked only an animated gif of a man’s hand patting a woman on the head:

October 6, 2008

Thanks for your note, and I’m sorry the article troubled you. Perrotta’s piece is insightful, witty, and provocative. He clearly separates the sexual sites from Palin, and no reasonable reader could possibly claim he was imputing their provocations to her. As to the larger issue of Palin’s sex appeal, only someone living in a cave for the past month could deny that it is an important element in her appeal. Conservative commentators talk about her sex appeal all the time, and with great enthusiasm; Within the McCain campaign itself they call her the VPILF. Perrotta has pointed out what is obvious to every single person who has analyzed her effect on the race—pointed out what her most avid supporters are saying about her.

Needless to say, we will not be removing it or altering it.

Sincerely,

David Plotz

Got that? Gratuitous commentary about anal sex and masturbation = “insightful, witty, and provocative.”

Now you know why that Beavis and Butthead graphic is up there.

As The New Agenda notes on its website:

Why are some men so insecure about their status? Why are some men unable to move forward from a high school-type maturity level?

Haven’t we all noticed where the attacks are coming from? It’s men who don’t feel comfortable in their own skin. Because they are insecure of their standing with other men and in society in general, they choose to strike out at the old comfortable target: women. We say “old and comfortable” as this is reminiscent of their days of adolescence.

Don’t worry, David and Tom. You can peacefully co-exist with women when you can come to terms with your insecurities. We are not the enemy – promise. Degrading and diminishing women by sexualizing them doesn’t make you a bigger man – it makes you a high school boy.

(Or the host of a major news program on MSNBC. Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

This culture of misogyny must stop, and it’s up to us to fight back. We have to start somewhere, so let’s start by letting Butthead David Plotz know exactly how we feel.

What a bunch of elitist, sexist asses. And I thought Slate was almost sane but obviously they’ve been hitting the Hope Bong.

That article gets nominated for a Tweety Award

Comment by Leisa | 2008-10-11 22:06:21

I used to read Slate and post there under a different handle… It became a sexist quagmire during the primaries.

even the X factor Girls were bad…

Slate has been Obama central for months.

Imagine, the editor, an obvious Obama supporter, says that sexist and vulgar sexually charged commentary should be considered “insightful, witty, and provocative.” I guess they are trying to make Penthouse a mainstream rag, fit for adolescents and children to read…

Comment by MrMike | 2008-10-12 10:44:09

Would Putz say the same if the article were speculation on what might transpire in a certain Hyde Park bedroom? Or would the author of such an article be deemed a racist?

After reading what was written by these
two guys and seeing their pictures,
I was reminded of this piece titled,
“The Striped Shirt”. It’s kind of graphic,
but fits this pair to a tee!

Tom Perrota is on the downlow. I am reading one of his books right now (the abstinence teacher) and as a gay man I can tell. I have come to the conclusion that so many people dislike Sarah Palin because of jealousy. Sarah and Todd Palin love each other, support each other and respect each other. Dennis Prager (Cons. Talk Show Host) said

“the basis to a strong relationship is the absence of contempt”..

Comment by hank48188 | 2008-10-11 22:23:47

What about that Obama, I think he’s on the downlow too, Bill Ayers is Bi, and then that Sinclair deal, and how about that murdered Choir Director at Rev Wright’s place, and his Mentor in Hawaii, Frank Marshall Davis was a sexual pervert and a Commie

Comment by Maverick | 2008-10-12 11:45:41

Tom Perrota is on the downlow and as a gay man I can tell.

Pluff is a gay man too. Connect the dots to the vile sexual statements. After reading the awful seuxual statements about Sarah, I thought to myself, this sounds like something a jealous gay man would say.
Sorry, it’s true. Who else would think in terms of anal, fisting and jacking another off? These pigs need to go. They obviously don’t like or respect women. They feel superior towards women and act justified in what they are doing since they claim superiority. Lets’ flood them with emails and I for one have no need to be polite.

We should shame each and every misogynist pig like Plotz and Perrotta. Let’s call them out for what they are and diminish them the way they diminish women.

I’m also writing a letter to these scumbags!

Comment by Jim S | 2008-10-11 21:14:37

Write a letter to your female friends that are voting for Obama (if they are still talking to you) and ask them if they’d be upset if it was Michelle and if so have them write a letter to Mr Putz.

Comment by tzada | 2008-10-11 21:48:26

When you write that letter include this… ask them if they would be friends or associate with these people.

Fugitive Days.

“Kill all the rich people. Break up their cars and apartments. Bring the revolution home, kill your parents, that’s where it’s really at.” He also omits any discussion of his wife Bernardine Dohrn’s famous reaction to the Manson killings, she gave Manson a three finger salute and said “Dig it. First they killed those pigs, then they ate dinner in the same room with them, then they even shoved a fork into a victim’s stomach! Wild!”

Ask them how they can vote for someone who does.

Comment by tzada | 2008-10-11 21:50:03

Thanks for your note, and I’m sorry the article troubled you. Perrotta’s piece is insightful, witty, and provocative.

Yeah, that’s the “narrative” about MooDoo at NYT. Dowd is supposed to be “provocative, insightful and witty.” Blech. I guess this guy thinks he’s Dowd, who thinks she’s Dorothy Parker, who was really entertaining.

The problem with writing venomously is that you have to up the ante to keep the audience. Ooooooooh, he’s soooo nasty - means that the reader will look for worse next time. That’s why Dowd is unreadable; it’s just bile with no countervailing sweetness.

And reducing everything to a boring male sex fantasy is boring even before you make the mistake of reading it. Yeah, you’ve got a penis, whatever, move on. Don’t stumble while you’re staring at it either.

Comment by typewriterstreaming | 2008-10-11 21:03:23

If as Dowd suggested Hillary was a witch, down in the dirt Dowd is a broom stick. Now which one would you rather be - the rider or the ride?

She wasn’t booed, in fact, it was mostly cheers, a few boos from the raptors but then there were lots of cheers, I know cause my cousin was at the game.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-10-11 21:14:18

There were Obama signs in the background. Do people usually bring Obama signs to a hockey game? No. Plants by team Obamabully central. They knew Sarah was going to be there and they sent their thugs as usual. The sad part was little Piper and Bristol were with her. Scumbags obama followers are scumbags….acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Comment by Snapper | 2008-10-11 21:23:39

True Cooper,
I have been to Flyers games and they boo every single guest puck dropper, no matter who it is or for what cause. Philly sports fans are brutal, they were booing more because of the politicizing of there beloved hockey game.

Comment by Tuppence411 | 2008-10-12 08:44:18

Little Piper was so happy to be there, with her Team jeresy on and everything- You would think the Obots in the stands would have the common decency not to ruin the moment for a child.

Comment by typewriterstreaming | 2008-10-11 21:12:23

The saddest part of that booing episode was Sarah brought her two daughters to come out on the ice with her. come on, how the hell can humans boo when there is a very young kid out there? Sick. I really am sick and tired of this election season. I’m sad. I’ve seen behavior from my country men that is just awful. then i come to sites like this and people are great. So I’ll leave happy now. :)

Comment by Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion | 2008-10-11 21:18:10

I’m sure Palin will take this in stride. She would say something like “My son is serving in Iraq in order for you protesters to have the right to make jackasses of yourselves.” Well something like that. ;)

Comment by McTampaBayacuda | 2008-10-11 21:31:01

I heard there were people in the audience with Obama signs. Now, I also heard a black women say the other day that when Sarah says hockey moms, she’s only talking about white women so that’s racist.

Comment by I have a bracelet 2 | 2008-10-11 21:49:44

kinda funny because

she plays HOOPS

Comment by McTampaBayacuda | 2008-10-11 21:58:16

The black women said she didn’t know any hockey moms or Joe six packs. I think if Sarah made any reference to basketball that would have been considered racist too.

The women probably would have said…Does she think AA’s can only play basketball? Why, that would be stereotyping.

Comment by Seattle Moss | 2008-10-11 22:03:58

That P dippy guy said that Sarah is unqualified because she comes from a state that doesn’t have any black people.

I’ve been sneared at in grocery store parking lots by black women. This is getting out of hand. They come to the caucasian grocery store to pick fights with the white shoppers. This bites. The chip on their lazy arsed shoulders must be extremely heavy. The victim mentality is stirred up by Nobama.
It’s too bad.

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-12 12:53:35

How do you get “smeared?”

I have no problem, but I must admit, I don’t have bumper stickers or anything like that. My neighbors are AA folks, very nice, and I wouldn’t want to offend them. I can vote. I’m sure they feel the same.

We get along nicely.

I do know that the workplace has become sort of sticky for a lot of McCain supporters.

Comment by Baba Rum Raisin | 2008-10-12 02:35:52

>>> The black women said she didn’t know any hockey moms

Chris Rock says that as soon as someone invents a heated rink, AA’s will take that sport over too.

>>> or Joe six packs.

Preferred packaging for malt liquor is in “40’s” rather than 6 packs.

Comment by csuzeq | 2008-10-11 22:39:28

One of the commentators on FOX or CNN, can’t remember which just the other day said that hockey moms is racist because they are different from basketball moms.

Sad, isn’t it? I kid you not. Some days I want to go to sleep and wake up in 5 years and see where we are as humans.

Comment by csuzeq | 2008-10-11 22:40:29

Imeant to say it was an Obam pundit on FOX or CNN, not a commentator.

Comment by Annie Oakley | 2008-10-12 10:24:57

In short, there is no way Sarah Palin can refer to herself or her supporters that isn’t racist. Old Mr. Hope and Change, Mr. Post Partisan Politics is bring his gun to the knife fight. He’s doing exactly what he did to the Clintons to McCain-Palin.

Elija Cummings said McCain was George Wallace and that he was “sowing the seeds of hatred” about race - I don’t have the exact quote, but it’s just like they did to BC with “fair tale” and Hillary with LBJ only this time I think McCain’s won the sacking and ashes for something an alleged supporter at a rally said.

The gap between claiming McCain is a racist when he says these are dark days and the Beavis and Butts sexism - one is called where it doesn’t even exist and the other is just supposed to be “insightful, witty, and provocative.”

First I was a liberal democrat and I figured I’d support Obama so I set out to find out something about the guy. What I learned convinced me to support Hillary instead. I watched what the dems and liberals did to her and I was pretty angry about it. I watched what looks to be the Chicago mob’s takeover of the party and I registered as an Independent. Then I saw the liberals I thought I knew shred Sarah Palin in a way beyond all decency. Beavis and Butthead were my last straw. I’m voting a straight republican ticket.

It’s like this. Suppose you were a black guy who played poker ever second Friday of the month with a bunch of white guys. Suppose that one month you got confused and came to play poker on the first Friday, but you discovered all your white friends were having a clan meeting. That is how I feel about the democratic party and the liberals.

Comment by Maverick | 2008-10-12 12:57:47

Me too. Repubs are powerless to make any changes now. With a Dem majority and a Dem president, our gooses are cooked. I’m voting Repub all the way for checks and balances. The Dem party is gone. Hill is gone. No turning back. Keep going. The dogs are coming. Keep going.

Via ben smith:

The booing of Palin (and her young daughter) was also predicted by sports types who spoke to my colleague Ken Vogel before the game.

“I am surprised that the candidate would go on the ice in Philly — Philly fans threw snowballs at Santa Claus and booed Beyonce because she was wearing a Michael Jordan dress,” said Ted Leonsis, owner of the Washington Capitals, a conference rival of the Flyers. “This is dangerous territory.”

It was expected. A hockey crowd in the heart of darkness prolly doesn’t mean much to the 160 million people plus who will vote on Nov. 4th.

Comment by Snapper | 2008-10-11 21:18:31

There were boos for sure, but take a look at the crowd at a Flyers game. Mostly under 30 and wealthy “elitist” fans, more then half the seats at a Flyers game will set you back $100, the cheap seats are $60. Not too many joe six packers at those games, I’ve been there.

Comment by Liz B | 2008-10-12 15:43:36

My daughter texted me from the game to tell me Palin was there.
Next, my daughter said there was a woman for obama sitting somewhere near her, who started booing and screaming nasty stuff at palin…my daughter, Heather jumped up and started shouting her down…they got in a shouting match, and Heather told her to educate herself on obama and stop acting like a piece of white trash…people started cheering and clapping and then laughing at the Obama person.
That’s my girl!!! ;)

Heather, you rock!

The blog owner Jeff does an incredible job teaching everyone about case law and our Constitution. I highly recommend the blog. Anyway, the video is outstanding and since the MSM is intentionally ignoring this we should send this along to everyone possible. I know Mr. Berg could really use money to help with the case. if everyone sent him even a dollar if would help. He’s going to take the case to the Supreme Court if necessary. Don’t hype up anything too much, especially if you have not seen it yourself. Remember, Obama is Teflon coated. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. You are bound to be disappointed. Defeating The Precious requires relentless hammering away and persuading voters one at a time he is not fit to be CIC.

That being said the trolls are in a false sense of elation right now. They are being fed false polls and continue to gorge themselves on propaganda friendly to The Precious spewing endlessly from the MSM. They will not know what hit them in the last two weeks of this election when the crapola hits the fan. I am prepared mentally for a McCain loss as I don’t count on anything. The trolls are not prepared for an Obama loss. The Precious has been playing the inevitability card. The trolls believe it but the electorate is another story. I will enjoy watching them suffer if he loses. I don’t have a crystal ball, but if we keep our noses to the grindstone and work our asses off for Mac, he should prevail. Remember, Hillary won the nomination but was cheated out of it. There are no caucuses, crooked RBC and chicken shit delegates in the general election. I doubt Mac and the GOP will let Opampers waltz over the finish line without a huge fight. Logic is your friend. Fear is your enemy

Oh yes there are chicken shit delegates in the general election. They are the members of the electoral college, and their vote is governed by the rules of their State. We have always assumed that their votes are pledged on a ‘winner-take-all’ basis (except for a couple of known States that have proportional representation for this). But after the shenanigans of the caucuses, and the exploitation of the arcane elements in the rules by the Obama crowd, I wonder if Sen. Obama and DNC have people combing the State laws to see what kind of loopholes they can find in the State laws. With a lookphole, they can figure what pressures they can bring to bear in order to skew the electoral college vote the same way that they did for the convention delegates. Does anyone know if this is happening? Does anyone know how to find out?

I talked to an ex friend today who started in on Sarah Palin.
I guess he thought that I was still a democrat.
I reminded him that the real story was about a kid getting tazered by a trooper.
Then I dropped the bombshell..

I like Sarah Palin and her values.

The world has changed and the democrats wish defeat for America. The democrats have become the party of Marxists and thugs.
I also told this ex friend that if Obama raises taxes we will have the Great Deflation where everything is worth zero and nobody can afford to buy.
This guy walked off in a Huh..
I don’t care!!
I will always be country first!!

Yeah, my former Democrap friends that switched from Hillary to Obama have seriously drunk the Koolaid. I don’t get it. They always walk off in a huff, so I stopped trying to talk to them. Plain and simple, you just aren’t allowed to say anything against Obama. It contradicts everything they hear on TV. I never realized how many people get their world view from that box, like it’s the Bible or something. Now they’re walking around in zoombified states obeying what it tells them to do. It’s like some sci fi film.

Web surveys are dangerous and misleading since we have no way of knowing what if any protections are in place to prevent one person or computer program from voting multiple times. Since we also now know the MSM is in the tank for The Precious we can’t even be sure they are not just making up the results they want. I trust my own mind, not what some survey or poll wants me to believe.

Comment by Jules | 2008-10-11 23:43:43

People think that if you’re pretty, then you can’t possibly be smart. They think there is no way that someone could be fortunate enough to be born with looks AND a brain. It just wouldn’t be fair. It doesn’t compute. However it does happen. One example: Cindy Crawford was valedictorian of her high school and went to college for chemical engineering before quitting to model full time. Fair-no. True-yes.

Comment by anon | 2008-10-11 23:45:14

Those types, what they really want? I’ll tell you:

seemingly real feeling, looking female figures that are non-organic (life size dolls). Simply, perfect f*#ck dolls that they can push back under the bed when they’re done AND a level of scientific advancement that provides for human procreation without living females (just a depository of eggs).

In other words, get the science lined up. Kill the females and harvest/store the eggs. Mass production of f*#ck dolls.

That IS what those neanderthals want - happily, they are the insane and unlikely to prevail.

There were 5 children in my family. 3 were girls and 2 were boys. My parents raised all of us as human beings capable of being whoever we wished. My father also told us that men had “two brains”. Real men thought with the brain in their head; those who pretended to be men let the “other brain” rule them and were sick. Until this election I never realized how right he was.

Either theselunkheads think Bobo has the election won and they are free to mock and run roughshod over his opponents, or they realize he doesn’t have a chance and they are simply lashing out in frustration. They’re certainly not getting any voters by angering women in general and Palin supporters in particular. People of their ilk hate Christians so badly that they almost foam at the mouth! I know people who are scared to death Bobo will win, but when I ask who they know who supports him–baring his usual unwavering demographics–they know practically no one! The MSM has a lot of folks convinced he’s all but elected. Hopefully, his detractors will be out in droves to see to it that this doesn’t happen!

Sent Plotz and Slate offices my own letter:

Dear Slate Editor David Plotz:

http://www.slate.com/id/2200814/

Regarding Slate feature of September 26, 2008 by Tom Perotta entitled “The Sexy Puritan”:

This is truly an appalling and specious dismissal of candidate Sarah Palin, using vulgar insinuations. It demeans women; and it mocks Palin’s deeply held values, which reflect the values of many Americans. Sarah Palin is a mother with 5 children in a long-term marriage; she’s a Governor. But, Perotta attempted to reduce her to nothing but a sex object. Apparently, Slate editors have no idea how offensive this is to all women. Perotta used such vulgar and disgusting pornographic links and images in a transparent and disgusting objectification of her using Perotta’s own sexual fantasies as the vehicle to do so.

Just asking: Does Slate intend to expose Perotta’s pornographic sexual fantasies about other females in future articles? Maybe next time, he’ll enlighten us as to how he masturbates while looking at pictures of girls in parochial school outfits? Frankly, women don’t appreciate feeling threatened with Perotta’s public pornographic fantasies.

No, Mr. Plotz: The article by Perotta isn’t “witty” or “insightful.” But, pornography is often described as “provocative.”

Mostly, it’s insulting, offensive, and disgusting. And, so is Slate.

The writer seems very out of touch to me. I notice that not many liberal authors have a clue about spirituality.

I’ve always said that’s why they fell overboard for Obama. He was running a campaign that was offering a much-needed spiritual perspective…hope. Those people haven’t cultivated this in their lives, so they were ripe for picking.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-10-12 12:10:14

Hope is a function of future. Opportunity, a condition that requires never the knock, for it is always.
