About the Financial Institution Mentioned in the Sun-Times: Obama, Tony Rezko, Amrish Mahajan, the Kenwood Mansion & Rita Rezko

**********Truthteller asks bloggers and reporters to direct their attention to Amrish Mahajan and the Mutual Bank of Harvey.**********
Mike Robinson’s AP article entitled “Obama Fundraiser, Convicted of Fraud, Spills Beans,” corroborates what we at No Quarter have been writing for weeks: Antoin “Tony” Rezko is cooperating with federal prosecutors interested in Barack Obama. While the national media’s attention to this topic is long overdue, I am not prepared to state that it is too little, too late. I am, however, disappointed.
Also disappointing but somewhat predictable is the blogosphere’s bungled reception of Mike Robinson’s article. Of course those who have embraced Obama will dismiss the story as so much yellow journalism. One blogger claims that prosecutors are interested in Blagojevich and not Obama. But looming in the blind spot of that blogger’s necessarily tendentious gaze is Rezko’s 9 JUN 2008 letter to Judge Amy St. Eve and the reference to Obama as “Individual D” in the superseding indictment and the proffer of evidence filed by Fitzgerald and his prosecutors during the Rezko trial. Obama’s name can be printed again and again on the surface of the legal documents filed during the proceedings of the Rezko trial, but these writers with all their “naked” insight will clothe the verifiable record with their blindness. Knowledge production, it seems, has been lifted from its evidentiary supports when Democrats write about Barack Obama and Antoin “Tony” Rezko.
And yes, those Democrats include some ostensible Hillary Clinton Democrats. Seizing upon the following quotation in a Chicago Sun-Times column, one blogger believes the AP story heralds the end of the political careers of Alexi Giannoulias and Barack Obama:

While Rezko was a customer of Alexi Giannoulias’s Broadway Bank, where he amassed a debt of $450,000 after writing bad checks at Las Vegas casinos, and while Giannoulias did write loans for Rezko, I do not believe one can aver with the confidence of the blogger I cite above that federal prosecutors are now focusing on Giannoulias, even if Giannoulias was tied to Rezko by his opponent during his 2006 bid for the office of Illinois state Treasurer. Allow me to be clear: Obama bundler, mobster banker and Obama protégé Giannoulias is, to be sure, embroiled in the Rezko scandal and in other aspects of Chicago politics any political observer would find unsavory, but he is not in my opinion the topic of the conservation occurring between Rezko, Rezko’s attorney and Fitzgerald’s team of prosecutors. I do admit he is grist for the mill of impetuous bloggers who desire web traffic and a controversial headline or two, however. Because I tend to rely on evidence and not on hearsay, I believe we should focus our attention on Amrish Mahajan and the Mutual Bank of Harvey, not on Giannoulias and the Broadway Bank, if we are to assign names to the financial institution about which Sneed of the Chicago Sun-Times has heard “rumblings.” Although Mahajan is not known to readers of No Quarter and to the national media, I imagine they will desire more information on the unscrupulous banker once they read the information I unpack below the fold. And yes, Obama is involved, deeply involved.
My interest in Amrish Mahajan and the Mutual Bank of Harvey was picqued by this list of contributors in Rezko’s bundling network provided by the Chicago Sun-Times last March. View the second page of the document, and notice the following entry:

Not only was Mahajan a member of Rezko’s bundling network; his bank, the Mutual Bank of Harvey, granted Rita Rezko the $500,000 mortgage she needed in order to purchase the lot on which the Obama mansion in Chicago sits. As many of you may recall, the Obamas could not have purchased the mansion they could not afford unless transactions for the mansion and the lot closed on the same day. Obama needed to locate someone who would buy the lot, and he approached Rezko, the convicted slumlord with whom Obama toured the property before they mutually agreed to the following arrangement:
The home and lot sales closed on June 15, 2005. A land trust controlled by the Obamas bought the house for $1.65 million, and the Obamas secured a $1.32 million mortgage from Northern Trust to complete that purchase. That same day, Rezko’s wife, Rita Rezko, bought the side lot for $625,000. A $37,000- a-year Cook County employee, she secured a $500,000 mortgage from Mutual Bank of Harvey.
The structure of this transaction begs the following question: What bank would lend a government employee who earns $37,000 per annum a $500,000 mortgage? What bank would assume such a risk?
The Mutual Bank of Harvey, of course, for the Mutual Bank of Harvey’s President is a man who is deeply connected to the Chicago machine that backed Barack Obama. Indeed, Amrish Mahajan was one of Mayor Daley’s first political appointments in 1989, when he was named to a seat on Chicago’s Plan Commission, where he would be joined by Obama’s former boss and Rezko’s business partner Allison Davis and by Valerie Jarrett, Daley’s Chief of Staff who chaired the Commission from 1991-1995. Mahajan, in other words, worked with those who devised and profited from Daley’s failed public housing experiment in Chicago, a public housing policy Obama helped fund as state Senator and US Senator.
Rezko, according to the Boston Globe, was one of the major beneficiaries of Obama’s legislative advocacy for funding of Daley’s public housing experiment. Other major beneficiaries are Jarrett and Allison Davis. Mahajan was also a beneficiary, for his bank had made $3.4 million dollars in loans to Tony Rezko’s slum landlord business since 2002. A banker for one of the slumlords who benefitted from the Daley housing program Obama helped bankroll, Mahajan was returning a favor when he wrote a $500,000 mortgage in 2005 for the wife of one of his clients. Although Tony’s financial problems were mounting in 2005, and although Rita earned only $35,000 per annum, Mahajan underwrote the mortgage. Favors must be reciprocated, I guess, especially when one can satisfy two parties at once: the person with whom one has a complicated relationship in real estate and the politician who helped finance that complicated relationship as state Senator and US Senator.
I doubt federal investigators are interested in the Mahajans solely for their involvement in the property deal involving Obama, Mahajan and the Rezkos. The Mahajans, I believe, are the foci of their probe for many reasons.
- Anita Mahajan, the wife of Amrish, has been involved with questionable real estate deals that are the subject of federal probes with Governor Blagojevich’s wife, Patricia
- Anita Mahajan exploited lucrative no bid contracts with the Department of Children and Family Services to steal $2.1 million from Illinois taxpayers; she was charged and released on a $250,000 bond in March 2007
- “Uncle Amrish” has raised more than a half million for Blagojevich and approximately $50,000 for Mayor Daley, whose father helped launch Mahajan’s banking career
- “Uncle Amrish” also helped Obama purchase a house he could not afford
The real estate transaction involving Rita Rezko, the Obamas and Mutual Bank of Harvey is just the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, the Mutual Bank of Harvey seems to be at the center of all the corruption in Chicago. To quote former Donald Perillo, Chicago insurance mogul and son of the lawyer for Al Capone, in the Chicago Tribune article I cite above:
Donald Parrillo said he isn’t surprised to see Mahajan mix it up with politics and business. “He got that attitude from the Parrillo family,” the former alderman said. “He wanted to get in the game.”
And Mahajan certainly is in the game. The banker of the Chicago machine, he is also the man who wrote the mortgage for Rita Rezko that facilitated Obama’s purchase the mansion he could not afford. This is why I believe prosecutors are interested in Harvey Mutual Bank. Not only did Rezko receive loans from this institution; this bank is heavily involved in problematic real estate dealings involving Blagojevich and Obama. And if I may quote Rezko in the 9 JUN letter he wrote to Judge Amy St. Eve:
Your Honor, the prosecutors have been overzealous in pursuing a crime that never happened. They are pressuring me to tell them the “wrong” things that I supposedly know about Governor Blagojevich and Senator Obama. I have never been party to any wrongdoing that involved the Governor or the Senator. I will never fabricate lies about anyone else for selfish purposes. I will take what comes my way, but I will never hurt innocent people. I am not Levine, Loren, Mahru , or Winter.”
Rezko is now talking, and prosecutors are presently interested in a politically connected financial institution. I bet Obama now regrets paying Rita Rezko $104,500 for the strip of the land in the lot on which his house sits in January 2006. Acquired with the assistance of a questionable $500,000 mortgage from Amrish Mahajan’s Mutual Bank of Harvey, this lot and Obama’s desire to expand his yard by bit was the catalyst for all the investigative reports into Obama’s deep ties to Rezko. By the way, Rita’s lot is only accessible through the front gate of Obama’s home; it is not a separate property, and it was never intended to be a separate property.
“It was a mistake to have been engaged with him at all in this or any other personal business dealing that would allow him, or anyone else, to believe that he had done me a favor,” Obama says of the real estate transactions with Rezko. I wonder if now he also believes it was a mistake for him to serve as the legislator who represented and bankrolled Richard Daley, Amrish Mahajan, Valerie Jarrett, Allison Davis and the Chicago Plan Commission. But at least he and Michelle have a house, a house the Mutual Bank of Harvey, the politically connected bank that wrote loans for Rezko, helped them procure in 2005. Too bad that house will be the end of Barack Obama.

It’s too bad McCain’s campaign staff is sabotaged with traitors just as Clinton’s campaign was. Otherwise they’d be harping on this corruption day in and day out. And they’d be campaigning in California, too. It’s a state they have a chance of winning and whose electoral apparatus is tamper-proof. I think Palin has made two appearances here. I live in Ohio. I did not early vote because I didn’t trust that my vote would count. There would be too many days to change my ballot for a vote for BO that I would never cast! McCain on Nov. 4th for President!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, Amy, all these warped and corrupt threads all seem to stem from the Rezko mansion in Kenwood. But no one desires to actually investigate the structure of the transaction or the people involved in that real estate deal.
How can Obama say he knows nothing about any of these people or any of these real estate deals
including his own. I guess only in Chicago you can buy 1/6th of someone’s yard!
Obama keeps saying he know’s nothing. I know someone who spent 5 yrs in prison because they knew about but wasn’t involved directly involved with the crime. but it has people questioning why did Rezko’s wife by property that can only be accessed through Obama’s front gate. After she sold a strip to Obama she sold the rest to a lawyer of Rezko’s for supposedly 575,000 now mind you…you still have to go through Obama’s property to access it.
Rezko’s wife bought the land…then claimed to be bankrupt…No one has proven where her money came from yet although I remember a consistent mention of Auchi….UK Press has a lot on Auchi…

This deal stinks to high heaven
Not only that — but, Rezko and BO shopped for this place at a time when BO was on the Chicago get the olympics committee, and was putting together a big pitch to Daley to set the current application up as a big RE development project for that poor impoverished south side, and help all the minorities there. That supposedly got Daley to back this Ol. bid, which is being looked on more favorably because of this great pro-poor plan.
But guess what? BO’s Rezko house is smack in the middle of that location, and you can’t tell me that this real estate won’t skyrocket in value if Chicago gets the olympics and starts buying up land on the south side.
Check it out; its an amazing coincidence!!

The Obama’s own the strip and there’s a fence that runs down the strip that Obama had put up and Rezko paid for.
The lawyer that bought the other piece was Rezko’s attorney. My guess is the attorney is covering for something.
In Chicago most of the wheeler dealers are dirty.
It was sold yet again to a someone else. The lot is not big enough to build on. By selling a ten foot strip it was rendered worthless. The easements give it a tiny footprint that only a weird structure would be built. Personally I think it would appraise at a small amount and the Obama’s were counting on it being given to them.
Real estate and gambling is becoming the most common way to pay bribes to public officials. Duke Cunningham is the most egregious case. Appraisals are over or understated and banks go along with it. In gambling, the briber buys a bag of credit at a casino and looses it all while the public official or his friend goes in buys a few chips and wins a load. Rezko was caught with this because he did not pay the casino who sued him. Casinos are used to launder the money and they do not like be used.
I was just thinking the same thing. By the time you apply normal building set-backs, probably 20 feet from the utility easement or 50 feet from the center of each road (it’s on a corner) that lot is completely worthless to anyone except the Obama’s. I’m assuming some set-backs here since I don’t Chicago regulations, but you can clearly see the point. Look how far back Obama’s house sits from the road.
Obama is a crook.
My understanding is that this is a very expensive historical district neighborhood. The house has never been without its side garden for over a hundred years. The lots are not deep enough for a front and back garden so a side garden was made for this particular mansion by the builders and subsequent residents. This is not a McMansion, this is the real deal and the side garden is very valuable to house.
No one who buys this kind of house wants some weird house built on top of them. A large part of the value of the house is the privacy afforded from the side garden.
The realtor also had the nerve to claim that it was going to be zoned for condos. Yeah right. A US Senator and his historical commission and zoning connected Daley employed wife is going to allow a zone change to build condos so they can look out the window down on the good senators house. The excuses given have been idiotic and the realtor is a connected friend to Rezko also who tried to get a commission appointment through him.

The Cook County Assessor’s website shows the mansion’s lot divided into 4 portions. One for the main house, one for what I presume is the garage in the back, the Rezko portion, and a small section at the back end of the Rezko portion. That fourth section is described as “Vacant land under common ownership with adjacent residence.” I’d like to know who the common owners are.
Condos? That’s crap.
It’s also interesting to note that the properties on the assessor’s site show “assessed value” and some have “market value”. The only one of the four Obama mansion lots that show any “market value” is the one with the garage on it. Market value of approimately $285,000 while the neighbor’s market value is about $734,000. Assessed values for the two Obama vs neighbor properties are similar.
Does Chicago tax on “market value” perhaps?
I find the fence subdividing the lot very tacky. It clearly does not belong on the property, and its sole purpose is to create an arbitrary separation between Obama and Rezko. I guess Obama wanted this mansion so badly he was willing to destroy the lot on which it sat. This is unfortunate, for it is a beautiful home. That fence also reveals that Obama and his wife have no respect for their neighbors or for the historical significance of that stately home. It is truly disgusting.
Who do you suppose maintains that vacant lot that has all the appearances of belonging to the mansion? You think Rezko or his wife pay a gardener for the upkeep? Watch, 17 to 20 or so years will go by and the whoever the current mansion owner is will file with Cook County to keep the lot for abandonment and the fact that for the past 20 years they’ve been using it, maintaining it and have fenced it off so that there’s no other way to get to it.
How long does it take in Cook County to file for abandonment of property?
Biden sold the house he owned for 20 years for full asking price, $1,200,000, to an Exec from MBNA, the Credit Card Giant, they are also Biden’s biggest contributors. That was about $100,000 over the real market value, Joe helped get that new Bankruptcy Bill through the Senate, one hand washing the other

From the photo posted in the above link, the strip the lawyer owns doesn’t seem large enough for him/her to do anything with. It’s too close to the house.

No one will be able to develop anything on that lot. But even worse, the house the Obamas had to occupy will no longer enjoy a large yard.
Many of the homes in Kenwood enjoy large yards. The Rezko mansion is now attached to a lot that is segmented by a fence that clearly does not belong on the property. Not only is it unsightly; it is a sign of Michelle and Barack Obama’s lack of respect for their neighbors and for architectural history.
They are vulgar parvenus. Indeed, they are philistines.

When I started investigating Obama it was his mansion that stood out as a red flag.

Of course, her hand is very heavy in this deal. Personally, I think the mansion deal is the only thing that she may have personally been in charge of. My sense tells me that this was one of these situations when a husband is placating/appeasing a disgruntled wife just to keep her quiet and out of his hair. Or in this case, cooperative.
Being a Chicago native, I’m willing to bet that this house was something Michelle had her eye on for years. Maybe even as a young girl. There’s something very pointed in this deal, because there should have been way too many red flags that said they should not do it, but they did it anyway.

I used to live in Chicago and listened to WLS talk radio there. There are some folks on the air there (Don Wade, Roe Conn,…) who usually had a pretty good understanding of what was going on in the inner workings of the extremely dirty Chicago Machine. Does anyone know what they’ve been saying?
Michelle has been part of the inner workings of the machine longer than Barack. She worked in the mayor’s office as an early job after college. She was the one trying to buy this house and got it set up. They did not have the funds to buy and maintain the house but knew that they would as a corrupt Senator and wife with an inflated salary on the university payroll. The scheme would have probably not been noticed if they had waited a year or two for their payoff, but they were impatient and greedy.
This entire situation has been discussed at The Real Obama (formerly Rezkowatch) and the Obama nuts went nuts. If anything gets Obama this will be it. Real estate fraud from the financial institutions is why citizens are so angry about the finacial meltdown. Real estate schenanigans by a presidential candidate will infuriate people also. This is something the average person can understand rather than Ayers, caucus fraud etc.

Ever so slowly truth has been trickling it’s way beneath the foundations of quite a few obama supporters, but they’re still cling to the pillars of “hope and change.” With the details of Obama’s twisted real estate dealings coming out now, after all thats been learned about the motgage meltdown, I’m hoping it will finally loosen the hands of those Obama supporters and allow them to reconnect with their average Joe outrage.

I agree with Elliott above. If there’s one thing that will shine appropriate light on the Obama miracle (that of about to be President with little if any experience), it’s the Rezko matter. I have followed this closely since Susan introduced the subject at Daily Kos last winter. I have no doubt there’s serious corruption there, if only the MSM would deign to cover it (and avoid the usual malfeasance on their part).
Maybe this is what the Republicans have more on, for I cannot understand their not having used this issue vs. Obama up to this point.
Alas, it may be too late to educate voters on the story — this should have been plumbed for the last 6 months in order to really take with voters. It’s probably going to be a case where Obama becomes President, has been sitting for 6-8 months, and some operation like the NY Times decides it’s time to “break” the story. Too late then, for it’s just another Whitewater story that gets talked about and debated endlessly to no ultimate point.
Fitzgerald is the key. He will prosecute if there is anything provable. Someone needs to get Obama to promise during a debate to keep Fitz as US attorney until he is finished. There will not be any public officials out of jail and it will take years. Fitz always starts with the weakest link and then flips them on everyone else. Rezko was looking at hard time in a prison in a swamp or desert and decided that he who flips first serves least. The sales for Depends have skyrocketed in Chicago. If Obama wins he will have to pardon everyone to save himself.
Believe me, BO would never make such a promise and would probably get the city courthouse named after himself if he got rid of Fitzg.
Obama promised a reporter in Chicago the day after Rezco verdict he would not pardon him if he(Obama) became POTUS.
But don’t forget GWB said he would fire anyone involved in leaking Plame’s name and how did that turn out?
The timing is perfect. The McCain campaign was wise to wait until now to gradually expose the truth about Obama. For two reasons:
1.) History has shown that voters have a short attention span. Many voters select candidates at the last minute in the voting booths. The memories of those last-minute political ads are still fresh in their minds. Last-minute voters are game changers.
Take the Rev. Jeremiah Wright scandal for example. The scandal broke in April during the primary. Immediately afterwards, Hillary Clinton’s campaign saw a surge in votes. She won the majority of the remaining states in the primary. Wright broke Obama’s momentum. Which leads to reason….
2.) The Obama MSM would have had plenty of time to smooth over Obama’s dirt. They’re in the tank for him. Even they admit it now (sort of). We see - even now - how these bastards are trying (and failing) to whitewash Obama’s true relationship with Bill Ayers. Just like they tried to sweep Wright under the rug months ago.
Unlike the Ayers mess, however, Obama & the MSM have been successful in practically wiping away the memory of Wright’s racial hatred in the minds of most voters. He left Wright’s church, and the MSM doesn’t mention him anymore. The Wright controversy is considered “old” to most voters now - even though Wright was exposed only six months ago!
With the election being only three weeks away, neither Obama nor the MSM will have the time to sweep Ayers, Rezko, ACORN and Lord only knows how many others under the rug. And the MSM can’t ignore the scandals - because John McCain & Sarah Palin are exposing them! As a result, undecided voters all over America are taking a serious look at Obama. They’re starting to ask questions. And are immediately having second thoughts about Obama.
And sure - Obama’s spawn can holler “Racism!”, “Dirty politics!” and “Negative attacks!” all they want. But they will just look hypocritical to most voters - as they have seen the MSM viciously attack Sarah Palin continuosly for the past month. Even with the MSM shifting to the economy in an attempt to deflect attention from Obama’s dirt and paint him as being “above” attacks, McCain is focusing on the issues while Sarah Palin is on the attack. The perfect one-two punch.

Discussing the Mutual Bank of Harvey requires a bit of time and effort, while focusing on Giannoulias simply requires recycling information all of us already know and understand. This explains why I wish some bloggers were more cautious and rigorous before they hijack important news stories.
All I keep hearing is that Hillary had a “scandal” that the Republicans kept nagging her about. They think the same thing is happening to Obama and that it’s “just the Republicans.”
If he is elected, his presidency may really be nothing more than fighting the scandals.
I am upset because that really does hurt some down-ticket Dems, who don’t deserve it.

I’m one of the people you quoted. I’m not saying that Obama didn’t get involved in some shady dealings back in Illinois (or even Washington).
Like you, I suspect that he did. I was silent on that issue in my blog post, because I don’t have facts.
Neither does the AP. I was criticizing AP 1) for running an article based on old conjecture instead of new info, and 2) for running a headline that gave a different impression than the article does.
I’ve criticized various media outlets for doing the same thing re: Hillary and McCain.
Lastly, I haven’t actually “embraced” Obama. I’m voting for him because I think he’s a less-bad bet than McCain on several policy fronts — a different choice than I’d thought I would make but certainly not a ringing endorsement.
How can being friends with a unrepentent terrorist and an American hating Reverend be “less bad” than John McCain? It isn’t.

Thank you responding, Deb. I hope you are doing well, and I hope you understand why I cite your article. It is just premature for anyone to claim Obama is not a focus of the investigation. And I notice too many writers repeat this unfounded notion again and again in a vain attempt to extricate Obama from the dealings of the man who helped him purchase a mansion he could not afford.
I’m gonna ask the question that everyone is wondering:
Why don’t all of these deep and vast connections bother anyone else besides us? It’s surreal. What happened to the astute, informed American public?

1. people vote their pocketbook. they think George Bush is responsible for the crappy economy and he is a Republican. John McCain is a Republican so therefore he wouldn’t help the economy.
2. Many people are just plain stupid and too lazy to get reliable information.

Obviously this case won’t be settled before the election. So if Obama wins, can’t he put a stop to Rezko’s case or move Fitzgerald? If he does not win, who cares?
I am also surprised so many Americans of Indian origin involved in this. Shame on them.
I personally believe Rezko, Mahajan and others involved in Daley’s real estate scheme were rewarding Obama for legislative and political favors.
Maybe this is why Michelle Obama answered, “We’re blessed” - when Larry King asked her if they had suffered losses during the recent stock market plunge.
That struck me as odd - and then, she tried to restate her response with a stammering, “I don’t actually know…” claiming she has been so busy on the campaign trail that she hadn’t checked with their accountant, but she continued with of course, they probably suffered some losses. I have been mulling over her answer since watching that last week, and now, after reading this post about their corrupt associations in the financial world, I suspect they didn’t suffer at all. A “heads up” to what was coming may have been given by Jim Johnson, et al. It would not surprise me if they actually profited from the financial fiasco.

The doctors who sold Obama the house and Rezko the adjacent lot are Fredric Wondisford and Sally Radovick (they are husband and wife). Both were professors at UCH while Michelle was the vice president of Public and External affairs (remember Mish’s mysterious pay hike right about now, folks).

Note that the Obama’s are not mentioned by name. They are basically the Northern Trust Co. trustees. Sally Radovick’s name doesn’t appear at all. Curious. So way back when, I tried to find out anything about Radovick I could. I came up empty. Maybe one of you have some info you can pass me on her?

So many unsavory characters related to Obama, it is hard to decided which one we should focus on. Everyone should look at the sum total of these associations, and simply state “no way”, but unfortunately, it seems there are still people, who think BO will be okay. I think they are nuts. Voting for a D is no longer the most important part of my decision making. Food for thought-since, BO usually doesn’t do anything, unless there is something in it for him, is it possible he tried to back Odinga, hoping he would win, and then have access to the records, i.e., birth certificate? from Kenya. Something that might sink his run for the Presideny. Just asking?
It makes us wonder. Obama seems to be unable to do business with a person that is straight, honest and good. Soros indicted for insider trading in france? Should have known. So all three of Obama’s bank relationships involve families into crime. We are mostly talking financial crimes these days swirling around the cesspool next to Lake Michigan.
12 months ago 3 close friends of Obama were killed that were gay and in the ministry at Obama’s church. All killed the same way.
