I’m trained in philology–the study of words–and I began to wonder about Obama’s supporters’ favorite word for Sarah Palin, the one we’ve seen on the tee-shirts of men and women: Cunt. Going to my trusty OED, I found a bit of history, which is repeated on the online etymology dictionary. I will paste here, for your interest:
This may be more information than we need but as we see, the word has an ancient history. In the 1970s, feminists such as Tee Corinne, appropriated the word in order to purge it of its offensive meaning. And more recently, Inga Musico’s 1998 book attempted to expunge the nastiness of the term by studying the word’s history.
Clearly though, Obama’s camp, identified in the photos as white and so-called high-information progressives, are not up-to-date on the gender-positive use of the term. In fact, they are clearly clinging to the past, as it says above: the word has been avoided in polite speech since the 15th century.
Of course Hillary was also called this name and no doubt, if they had the chance, Obama’s supporters would (and probably do) call me that name–along with any and all women who won’t be bullied or coerced into voting for someone whom we deem unfit for office. Is it too obvious to point out that misogyny is valorized by the Obama campaign?
I can’t help but think of the young women, those I teach who are beginning their college lives as well as the younger sisters, friends, daughters, granddaughters, of those who enthusiastically call Palin names. Maybe the words don’t stick by themselves–women have been called “bitches” and “hos” in hip hop and music videos for decades now–but certainly the claims that Palin is incompetent and unqualified (and Obama is qualified?), in conjunction with calls for violent retaliation against her (there’s a Facebook group called “I want to hit Sarah Palin in the Face”) sends a loud warning to young women making clear that any attempt at power will be negated by an obscenity, a demeaning of their skills and aptitudes and a threat of violence. You might remember the 1994 book, Reviving Ophelia, which many parents of young girls read hoping to help their daughters successfully navigate the gauntlet of adolescence. The author of the book, psychologist Mary Pipher, coined the term “girl poisoning” to describe what young women confront as they grow up in our society. The Amazon Editorial Review states:
At adolescence, says Mary Pipher, “girls become ‘female impersonators’ who fit their whole selves into small, crowded spaces.” Many lose spark, interest, and even IQ points as a “girl-poisoning” society forces a choice between being shunned for staying true to oneself and struggling to stay within a narrow definition of female.
Other studies state similar findings, and as a teacher, I often observe my female students acting “dumb” or “air-headed” in class but in the privacy of the papers they write, they reveal sophisticated and incisive analysis. It’s an old truism that many young women don’t want to look too smart in front of their classmates, not only the guys in class but also the other girls.
But why am I surprised? Obama will stoop to the lowest level to win. Even if it means codifying misogyny and sexism for his own daughters’ generation.

I’ve thought about this too. I am an engineer and in college, there were very few women in the program (and I went to a large engineering school). It’s interesting as to why there are so few women in more technical areas (math, physics, chemistry, engineering). I’ve seen capable women who refuse to go into field, despite expressing interest.
It’s like it’s not feminine to be seen as a nerd or tech person. I don’t know. But there’s an awful lot of lost talent because of it.
I work at a large technology company.
I went to a very technical talk at work the other day. There were at least 200 men in the room, maybe 300. There were at most 10 women.
There are two things that surprise me about this:
1. That there really are only 10 women in the company who would/could skip lunch that day to attend a highly technical talk. (It’s a relatively constant ratio, based on my observations at previous talks that I occasionally attend.)
2. That most of the women attending are quite young, and therefore likely rather junior in the company. In contrast, there’s more of a mix of ages of men at these meetings.
Is #1 the case because of #2, resulting in women simply losing interest because of lack of progress? Or is #1 the cause of #2?
It’s an interesting correlation. I just wish I understood more about the causal relationship.

As for the word “cunt”, that’s one of my favorite words, because I love philology too…”cunt” was not always such a heinous word. The Victorian Era made it into a “nasty’ word, but then again the Victorian Era made a LOT of things into “bad” things you shouldn’t say in public.
Bah, I should have used the disclaimer that while it’s one of my favorite words (because it pisses off prudish fundies), I do think that the shirts are wholly inappropriate.

Well, my ex was a crazy bitch. She was literally 1) insane and 2) a mean and narcissistic person (not unlike Obama, actually). And she had friends just like her. So when there are actually crazy bitches, I will tell you that there are crazy bitches there. There’s really no other word for what they were.
I do not use the word frequently in my typing/casual conversation. The fact that this impolite little Obamatronic woman is from Voorhees, New Jersey is just confirmation for me.

I will say this though: the general erudition of these people is alarmingly low. They look like the classic redneck crowd. Low on education, IQ, and any form of sophistication and class.
There’s a storm brewing, above and beyond what happens in this election campaign. The rats are coming out of the woodwork. And it is far uglier than any of us could ever have imagined. This is the world we live in.

I used to complain about the Tampon commercials. Before that I complained about the lift and separate bra ads. Now my wife complains about Viagra commercials and those for Cialis. Talking about those things, when our kids ask about them – after seeing them on TV, has been uncomfortable.

Yes. But again it’s not the word - it’s the associations. If the word is heard mostly with people who are full of hatred; and if they say it with a tone in their voices to indicate their hatred: then the word becomes a flash point to remind people of the hatred.

I find it surprising there is no formal process to ascertain whether a candidate qualifies. It sounds to me a bit like those election rules in Ohio!

Knowing that other women (even friends) are joining in this hatefulness is beyond demoralizing. Why do we hesitate to use his real name? How will the general electorate know to whom the nicknames belong? We should stop tippy-toeing on the important subject of Barack Hussein Obama whose citizenship is questionable. There’s not enough time left before Nov. 4. We have to unload all the ammo in the arsenal, if victory for the American people with McCain/Palin is what we want on November 4.
And why are people so concerned about being called racist. If you know in your heart that you are not, why be bothered? And if you are, so what? You are entitled to your own opinion. There is no way any law can be passed to curtail what goes on in people’s heads–only when they commit something criminal or violate someone else’s individual human rights. The law is very clear on discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, age, and sexual orientation.
Absolutely right. So long as the USSCt finds almost nothing to be a violation of constitutional equality guarantees (except Gore’s claim to have won in 2000), for sure just voting for McCain can’t be considered to be racial discrimination.

This explains ‘cunnilingus’ - I think it’s plausible this is where the word comes from. It seems our expletives need strong consonantal sounds. Ts and Ks and Fs are popular. Not many languages have the word ‘fuck’ of course - but a surprising number of them have expletives that mean other things but begin with that ‘F’. So if they turned ‘cunn…’ into something with a ‘T’ sound at the end - this to me sounds very plausible!

OT - Corsi interview. I’m listening to the audio file of the phone interview Corsi did tonight on the MommaE show. It’s quite a long interview with callers asking him questions as well. It is a REALLY good interview (once you get past the music at the beginning).
He just mentioned that he was supposed to be on Fox with Hannity & Colmes tonight but they cancelled it, then explained the news cycles are really short. I’m SO surprised that Hannity let this go.

He said that in addition to the emails and cell phone records, he has documentation that shows that Obama sent $1 million to Odinga’s campaign, and Quadaffi also sent Odinga $1 million for the campaign - all while this genocide was going on. He said that Odinga was the one who ordered his detainment. Really good stuff.
If Hannity won’t have him on to expose this stuff then we can make one of three conclusions:
1) Hannity has been threatened with legal action by the Obama
cultcampaign2) Hannity wants a radical socialist to be our next President
3) Hannity is plain stupid
“News cycles”? I don’t think so. This is possibly the most important election in US history. There are or should be no “news cycles.”
They too could be afraid of reprisals. I know that this stuff for sure will derail the Obama campaign. So anything that has that define tone will become a target of unspeakable violence.
Odd. Is Hannity holding on to this story until closer to the election?

Isn’t it just awful when people who don’t have the legs for it nonetheless wear those tight jeans?
I see lots of Obama-supporting hipsters in these jeans. The guys are the worst: a man should ONLY wear these jeans if he has slim, straight legs and narrow hips. Not child-bearing hips and knock knees. It makes them walk funny. There, I’ve said it.
