Um……..actually…………I believe that’s what Obama Was saying about McCain/Palin supporters during the last debate…………….or did you not watch it????????????? And, come to find out, according to the Secret Service, it didn’t happen – no one at McCain/Palin events called Obama a ‘terrorist’ or yelled ‘kill him’ which is what Obama claimed.

“Transcendent” is supposed to mean something like “beyond or above the range of normal or merely physical human experience”, or “existing apart from and not subject to the limitations of the material universe”. But that is a concept something like that of a round square. We can say what a round square is supposed to be: it’s an equiangular, equilateral, rectilinear, quadrilateral closed plane figure every point on the periphery of which is equidistant from a single point within its periphery. So we can specify the content of the notion of a round square, but only insofar as to be able to see that it is incoherent, i.e., contradictory. After all, meaningfulness is a necessary condition of contradictoriness. Similarly, the notion of something not subject to the limitations of the physical universe (which is, of course, all that there is) is just incoherent.

That makes quite the opposite case, doesn’t it? And it appears reasonable. My point is simply that it is all too easy to jump to conclusions about a candidate on the basis of select information. In a way, I take it that this is your point too. Perhaps the main difference between us is that you think I may be jumping too quickly to a positive conclusion, while I think that you may be jumping too quickly to a negative one.

I’ll make a deal with you! I’ll spend a day trying to find out all the information I can to convince myself that Obama is narcissistic and a bad choice for POTUS, if you agree to do the opposite and find out all you can to convince yourself that he’s a good choice.

As to my misrepresenting what the students said, I certainly didn’t mean to. I was, as you say, interpreting what they said, in the following respect: I was just trying to recall from memory what they said. As we all are, I am also subject to bias. The students did not use exactly the words I used to describe Obama. Perhaps I ought to have been clearer about that. I just didn’t think of it at the time, and I was responding to you in a (perhaps too) casual and informal way.

As regards the charge of Obama’s narcissism: I am not in a position to judge whether it is justified or not. It doesn’t look to me that he is narcissistic. But that doesn’t count for much, of course. Yet for every Vaknin you can find, there will always be apparently rational views on the other side, such as here:

It is pretty self-evident that, in comparison to most people, including most politicians, someone’s being a professor of constitutional law is good evidence that he or she has some serious intellectual goods going on. And in comparison to Palin, in particular, but also McCain, Obama has a superior intellect. I think it is wise to choose as intelligent person as possible to be POTUS. That is not the only relevant criterion, certainly. But being a “good guy (or girl) to have a beer with” is not the relevant sort of criterion at all.

Look, let’s not be silly. Yes, I thought the expressions you used were needlessly polarizing. And don’t worry, you didn’t ruffle my sensitive feathers, or whatever you said! I also agree with your implied condemnation of anyone calling Palin a c**t; I would condemn anyone calling anyone else that, ever. I certainly condemn anyone calling Palin that.

I used [sic] only when quoting others, as is common practice, in order not to repeat the mistake. You could have done similarly. I didn’t insult anyone, nor try to make anyone feel bad. Classy people like Rev Wright, though BO sat in the pughs for 20 years the only time he was racist and accused the US Gov of inventing AIDS to kill black people was when the Obama’s were not in attendance. Real classy folks like Bill Ayers from terrorist to “respected” Professor. Like convicted felon Tony Rezko whom he bought some sweetheart land from. Oh but it’s all good. He is the messiah huh?
