Well, let’s see Bear Stearns was founded in the 1920s. Lehman Brothers was founded back in the 1850s. Merrill Lynch was founded in 1914.

The impact that the repeal of the GBLA had was twofold. It provided greater competition and transparency on Wall St.. It also shifted the balance of power from the investment banks to the commercial banks. The investment banks responded by aligning htemselves with origination pipelines in an attempt to source product. They took too much risk in the process. The SEC did not PERFORM in monitoring the risk.

Is it mere coincidence that investment banks were the first big dominos to fall? Would such have even existedwithout the republican Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999?

Denying the significance of the repeal of Glass-Steagall to the current financial crisis makes about as much sense as denying the significance of the Enron Loophole with regard to another earlier republican-engineered deregulatory economic debacle. Have we forgotten Enron already?
