Open Thread * More on Rezko & Obama

Let’s tie this open thread’s chief topic to Truthteller’s significant breaking story, “BREAKING: Obama Land Deal with Rezko and Mutual Bank Subject of New Court Complaint.”

Recently, a friend asked for information on now convicted Tony Rezko and Barack Obama. Here’s what I sent her, from more stories on the Obamas’ mansion to Obama’s entanglements in with Chicago slumlords to Rezko’s trial, conducted by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald’s very able team:

First, I sent her a link along with some notes about Truthteller’s October 7th story:

CORROBORATED: Rezko Speaks, Prosecutors Interested in Obama Listen

– Obama’s history with Rezko is lengthy (Rezko contacted him when Obama was still at Harvard Law School — I believe, although it’s a hunch, that they met when Obama was in Chicago before he went to Harvard).

Their connections are political, business, and personal. Obama’s law firm represented Rezko’s interests, Obama pushed state legislation that helped Rezko, etc. The Woods Fund, along with its board members Bill Ayers and Barack Obama, was involved with Rezko and gave him financial grants.

In Obama’s own district, Rezko controlled former public housing and let it go to ruin. NoQuarter has numerous fact-checked stories on this + Flineo’s great videos offer rich fodder that can be used in TV/Web advertising.  Examples from Flineo’s channel:

THIS is an INVALUABLE video. Flineo included video footage of Carol Marin, a noted Chicago NBC reporter, saying that Rezko got over $100 million in taxpayer monies for his schemes IN Obama’s own district.  Ms. Marin shows the actual conditions of those properties.

Flineo then adds a still image of a map in which he highlights, one by one, how many of Rezko’s foreclosed, closed down properties are IN Obama’s own state senate district.  (That map comes from one of the Chicago newspapers — I can find the link if need be.)

Here are more links to some of our key stories and a radio show we did on how Obama used public housing privatization in Chicago to benefit his rich allies and political benefactors.

The Boston Globe did a great investigative piece on Obama’s links to the housing privatization schemes — but none of the rest of the MSM picked up their great work.  Our own Un Coup De Des wrote it up brilliantly in two parts:

     (a) Boston Globe Exposé, Part I: Introducing Cecil Butler, Obama’s West Side Slumlord Patron;

     (b) Boston Globe Exposé, Part II: Barack Obama (D-Slumlord) Is Aloof, Oblivious, Dangerous; and

     (c) I wrote a story about a little boy, with video and photos, who was killed this summer — it was all over the Chicago newspapers and TV stations– because another of Obama’s political godfathers/benefactors failed to maintain his privatized housing property in a safe manner. That was Cullen Davis, the son of Alison Davis who gave Obama his first job at a law firm that handled Rezko’s housing schemes: “The Blood Money of Barack Obama’s Money Men.”

See also: Larry Johnson’s more recent story on the ties among Obama, ACORN, and Obama’s slumlord buddies, Allison and Cullen Davis (father and son): “Barack Worked For ACORN, Promises to Do So Again.”

Related:  How the Obamas got that mansion.  I posted several links to stories about the mansion, including “How to Buy a Mansion You Can’t Afford,” which details how Michelle Obama used her position as a member of a preservation board to find out about and get that mansion that had been labeled “historic.”

Did anyone read the scathing letter McCain’s sent to the LA times? It was great. Criticized them for not covering these types of stories about Obama, and for not searching for Obama’s drug dealer, and for not going after Michelle.

Yes, they would much rather trash Cindy, Joe the plumber, and Sarah Palin’s daughter.

Who are these people that no longer care about a candidate with this type of a past, and friends?

Comment by tek | 2008-10-18 17:30:48

These people are the king makers in the New Democratic Party and the far left (college kids who want legal dope).

I don’t know if any of these stories will stick to Obama, but I believe his campaign is in more trouble than the media polls show. Otherwise, why would he be bashing someone like Joe the Plumber or Sarah Palin? I keep getting e-mails from the Obama campaign that sound desperate. And what about the 30 min. spot before the World Series? Just looks like McCain isi probably closer to him than the manipulated polls show.

Comment by John Smith | 2008-10-18 18:24:16

I don’t think he is just close I think he is easily beating him. He knows that he will loose PA, MI which will more then make up for the fraud that is going on in OH.

Don’t listen to those that say that voting for McCain is a racist vote. Don’t believe those that say we need “hope”. We don’t need “hope” we need security. We need a forceful hand to guide us through these troubling times. They say we vote based on fear. Well, fear is healthy. Maybe we need to feel the fear, embrace it. Maybe I do fear a muslim terrorist for a president, maybe I fear an America turining to communism, maybe I fear the chicago AA thugs running Washington… oh well. I know what happens when I DONT fear that which will hurt me. I may be voting on fear instead of hope, but that is MY choice, MY vote. McCain 08

Comment by tek | 2008-10-18 17:32:43

I think you are right. Another thing I saw today is a story announcing that the Black Muslims are reforming themselves–they’re not going to be a mafia anymore, they’re going to encourage blacks to behave! Just has the smell of desperation in it, they think Americans won’t vote for Obama because of black organizations like theirs. They are on his campaign staff.

I looking for to Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live. Its an ‘in your face’ gesture by Sarah. I hope Tina Fey is there, too. It would be cowardly of SNL and NBC if Tina was absent.

Sarah will do fine. Witness the RNC convention speech and her VP debate. She will charm the SNL audience which has grown since Sarah’s pick (and Tina Fey’s rendition of Sarah).

Personally, I think people like Tina’s Sarah because they can’t get enough of Sarah.

Can’t a 527 with some money run the Fileno videos or part of them as an ad. Average voters have not a clue as to what the heck is going on. They would be stunned.
I want to know why the hell would anyone want to pay inflated prices for real estate? Why would Rezko - why would Obama? Forget the plumber, call the exterminator, I smell a rat.
Over at TheRealBarackObama blog at word press - there is an excellent account that links the bullshit Rezko told Judge amy St Eve during the trial about his assets. It’s really an excellent read and I wish NQ would consider posting it here.
The big question is whether Fitzgerald will do anything that implicates Obama before Nov 4th - if he doesn’t Obama will have Fitzgerald under the Obama bus and replaced. This investigation into Operation Board Games and Obama’s fingerprints are gone.
Everyone should really try to send this to Fox, Drudge and the media. I know I am not alone in wishing the average voter had this information.

Well I told you so! Since Day One, Dem primaries I was speaking out regarding Senator’s Soetoro’s questionable ties to Tony Rezko and the Middle Eastern community. His ties to Corrupted Chicago cess-pool politics, his 10 year mentor relationship with, Frank Marshall Davis, self-admitted Marxist, bisexual and pervert, sex with a 13 yr! old. His ties to domestic bisexual terrorist, William Ayers, his thug supporters who cheated and intimadated Clinton supporters. The DNC rip-off of Hillary. His fund-raising and how foreign donations especially from the Middle East are funding his campaign. The Larry Sinclair allegations, corporate-controlled MSM cheerleading the phony one on. The questions surrounding his refusal to supply his original birth certificate. Yes, when is the MSM going to start looking at how Soetoro-Obama acquire his drugs, where are those drug dealers??? When are they going to surface? His trip to Pakistan, who supplied the funds, who did he meet when he was there???? I TOLD YOU SO!

Want to guess what the book title is?

It was written by an Islamic from India and contains his view of how America
will fall from power as other nations and groups, including ISLAM, come to control the world markets.

Comment by pm317 | 2008-10-18 19:29:33

Farid Zakaria the author of that book, is an American citizen though of Indian origin and a Muslim though he says he does not practice (He comes from a well to do family in India and quite sophisticated with a Harvard PhD or something I think) — he is the editor of Newsweek International I think and of course like all these pompous MSM people he supports Obama. He was one of the people who argued Obama’s eclectic and international upbringing was foreign policy experience!

Comment by Andy | 2008-10-18 20:02:16

Yes, I remember that. BTW I ammended my Wow as I realized the author was Zakarias. I don’t agree with him but I am sure lots of pols and media have read that book.

Comment by Andy | 2008-10-18 19:59:41

Actually, Zakarias is not that bad. I mean true he’s has a lefty’s world view and argues that American hegemony will diminish as the rest of the world rises, etc etc. But calling him an “islamic from India” is a bit too much. Many people read Zakarias all the time in Newsweek and he has or use dto have his own program on PBS on Foreign Affairs.

So although I am sure that Obama finds lots of inspiration in Zakarias ideas (Obama’s views are quite atuned to Zakarias’) I take back my initial “Wow” (didn’t realized then who was the author).

This is me being tolerant ;-)

Comment by Tristan | 2008-10-18 23:12:12

I like Zakaria also and his show is one of the smartest on TV if you like foreign policy. I don’t know why he jumped on the Barack bandwagon - it’s obvious that Obama would destabilize foreign policy by failing to support our allies like Israel or stand up to Russia. But then you have economists like Tom Friedman who are supporting Obama even though his tax policies would kill innovation. Frankly a lot of people who should really know better are staking their career on Obama.

I think Flineo’s “Forgotten People” is extraordinarily powerful. He’s done a lot of really gripping video work, but this one [all on its own] says everything you need to know about Barack Obama’s “experience.”

I watched this vid a number of times over the last few months. To be honest? It makes me want to weep at how patently fradulant this campaign and candidate is. Is he a socialist? I’m not sure. But he’s a crass opportunist and has walked over a lot of people, vulnerable people, to get where he is today.

He didn’t know what was happening in his own district? It will take more than conversational hypnosis to make me believe that lie.

Disgraceful!

they better move quickly on this if they want it to have an effect on Obama’s chance at being President. After that, if he gets in he will be shielded better than Ft Knox. He’s not been held accountable for anything his whole life.

Comment by Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion | 2008-10-18 18:00:25

The Precious has awakened the sleeping PUMA though. PUMAs love to dish out accountability. I think the strongest reason the PUMA movement started was his malfeasance in the primary. If he would have won without the race shit, caucus shenanigans, crooked DNC/RBC and chicken shit or corrupt delegates - in other words fairly and squarely, there would be no PUMA movement. It would also help his cause if he was qualified and did not have the baggage of a radical racist upbringing in Chicago politics. Mac as a vote now is a no brainer.

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-18 18:03:54

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-18 18:10:06

Well, PUMA is a conglomeration, Galt. There were several spontaneous sources, so I’m not sure we’re even a movement.

In any case, I’m not seeing stats that suggest we’re all that relevant in the bigger picture.

Back to the real topic. Do PUMAS matter?

According to the latest polls, women shifted back to Obama. I’d say they are soft supporters, though.

Joe the Plumber might pull them right back out again into McCain’s camp.

Comment by Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion | 2008-10-18 18:25:53

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-18 18:33:46

Well, I trust their internal polling data more than the big questions.

McCain is still leading on experience and readiness to lead, for example.

I think that’s very relevant.

Women moved back, I presume, due to the abortion threat.

So the internal questions are interesting.

Gallup (traditional) has McCain within 2 points.

We’re not seeing any of that show up yet on state polling, but that’s a significant shift.

And, frankly, Obama is outta shock and awe. Ain’t nothing worse than this financial mess.

Today, however, I was around a lot of people with 401Ks, etc., and the talk was all about “coping” rather than shock.

People are ready for a real depression. They don’t buy the idea that this is a recession. It’s obviously much worse.

But the spirits were very good. The worst is over for McCain. AND….he’s got 3 weeks.

OK, I’m outta cheerleader gas. :)

Comment by Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion | 2008-10-18 18:19:40

I have no idea how many PUMAs there are or the exact level of their impact. That was not my point.

The polls are all over the place and can not be trusted. From the troll level here and on other PUMA sites I’d say we are very relevant. If Mac wins, that would certainly suggest relevance beyond a few angry PUMAs.

Food for thought: even if there was one PUMA and they researched some information that ended up tipping the scales, size of the PUMA movement would not matter.

So I think it logical to say we are very relevant!

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-18 18:28:29

Could be. This year is interesting because there really are so many small pockets of voters.

Older….important in FL
White men…..important in PA, OH, MI
Cuban……important in FL

I still think Latinos are important in CA, though maybe it’s a lost cause.

In other words, I don’t mind being a very small pocket. We all add up.

Send this video to Greta. Maybe she can do a report on it early next week.

The people of Chicago really don’t deserve better since they keep electing the same crooks to represent them. But, it does make my heart break to see children having to live in such squalor. Sad too that the adults would probably vote the bums out if they weren’t so strung out on dope. Gaw, what a vicious cycle. And this is what he wants for our country. Sad, sad, sad.

This PAC is on a bus tour right now conducting rallies in swing states. So far their recption has been small.
Go over to their website and look at the national tour schedule. If they come close to you at all, please try to support them. Send out their info to family and friends that might live in areas where they are traveling. These are patriotic Americans giving up 2 weeks to defeat Barack.
They could also use money for ad buys as well.

We have all got to work together to drag McCain and Sarah over the finish line. They are being outspent 4:1 in some places. And we need to blunt the endorsement that is coming form Colin Powell and that huge rally he had in St. Louis today.

We can do this, but it ain’t gonna be easy or pretty.

I’m hoping that Fitzgerald’s investigation is not a mere postscript to the election.
Anything that isn’t proven NOW will fall by the wayside…Pelosi and Reid will not impeach their favorite, no matter what is revealed later!
McCain has bucked the odds before, but he sure has a up-hill battle on his hands now.
The American people are being DUPED, many of them willingly!

I challenge that. How do you know? Maybe things are a lot closer than we are being told. Carry on the fight!

This is neck and neck — do not believe otherwise.

If Fitzgerald doesn’t get Obama before (if) he takes the WH, Fitzgerald will go by the wayside. That’s Papa Daley politics they’re playing.

Comment by Khan Krum | 2008-10-18 18:27:27

The way Team McCain ought to handle this is to drive home the message that Obama is damaged goods, i.e., his administration will be hobbled from the get-go with investigations, scandals, etc. With the current state of our economy, the Counter Jihad, and the energy crisis, this is not the sort of distractions we need.

Comment by Sassy | 2008-10-18 18:36:42

Galt,
I do agree that things are closer than we are being told, and I’m in it for the long haul!
Just once though, it would be nice to hear someone acknowledge all McCain’s accomplishments, without EQUAL time to the opposition.
It is the exact reverse!

Comment by typewriterstreaming | 2008-10-18 18:44:23

It’s only a little but if you listen to Sean Hannity on the radio or Rush or Laura Ingram - it’s one sided pro McCain- (hell froze over Dems listening to Conservative Radio).

Internet archive April 1996 Chicago DSA… It’s beginning to look a lot like socialism. Especially this part “redistribution, the allocation of wages and jobs”

A true welfare system would provide for medical care, child care and job training. While Barack Obama did not use this term, it sounded very much like the “social wage” approach used by many social democratic labor parties. By “workforce preparation strategy”, Barack Obama simply meant a coordinated, purposeful program of job training instead of the ad hoc, fragmented approach used by the State of Illinois today.

The state government can also play a role in redistribution, the allocation of wages and jobs. As Barack Obama noted, when someone gets paid $10 million to eliminate 4,000 jobs, the voters in his district know this is an issue of power not economics. The government can use as tools labor law reform, public works and contracts

I believe Hawaii (Obama’s birth land not) had to disband their children’s health insurance because they were over run with parents canceling their private policies to jump on the handout wagon.

I wish someone with some pull could get this breaking news over to Greta for her show tonight. Or even next week. Susan, can’t you send this over to Greta or Sean Hannity the only two people in the media who seem to give a rats ass about doing their job?

This is worth checking out. Here is a sample:

Mr. Conner now reveals all this in a lawsuit against the bank that fired him because he wouldn’t play along. Stepping around Mr. Conner’s ambition, there is the much more fetching clue here that the prosecutors have raced way past talking to Tony Rezko about the “Board Games” that led to his conviction, past Tony Rezko’s corrupt dealings raising cash for Governor Rod Blagojeich, past Tony Rezko’s years of skimming and cheating and bullying in Chicago, to go right after the critical piece of the Obama house deal that underlines that something is rotten in Hyde Park.

Kenneth J. Conner doesn’t file a lawsuit in civil court unless he has spoken at great length with U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald’s office in front of a Grand Jury with regard the criminal investigation of Rezko and his clients. And the extremely irregular and unexplained purchase of the Hyde Park mansion for the newly elected and then sworn-in Senator Barack Obama in 2005 is a major mystery.

Galt as much as I want this to have legs and run. I fear it is far too little too late.

I have been reading all I can on the dirty dealings Obama has been involved in. Somebody somewhere in a high place has a vested interest in Obama.

The guy is so secretive he should be top priority of the FBI and CIA. SOOOOOOOOOOOO many unanswered questions. It seems like no one in authority cares.

I have to ask myself why?

Comment by Zeke | 2008-10-18 19:02:29

PK,
I believe Galt is on the right track here. Disregarding my feeling that Obama will lose the election, if he were to win, this investigation will still have legs. No matter who you are, you are not allowed to fraudulently enter information on a loan application. I know its nit picking but Al Capone went down because he forgot to itemize. It isn’t a flamboyant crime but when you sign a false loan document, you ADMIT to perjury. Can’t dodge it, can’t say you didn’t know, can’t do squat.
Fitzgerald knows this but wants Tony to provide the nails for the coffin.
We live in interesting times.

I wish Greta would have Evelyn Pritzer on her show for a full hour’s interview. I haven’t seen Pritzer be interviewed anywhere. She seems to know Obama’s Chicago machinations backwards and forwards and Pritzer is capable of lying it out in simple terms.
Any hope of this happening Greta and Evelyn?
And Evelyn, I sure miss your brilliant writing. We sure could use your touch about now.

Pringle. Not Pritzker, that’s Penny.

Comment by PKJAYNE | 2008-10-18 18:55:12

I read all of Pringle’s installments on Rezko Watch as they came out. She was definately onto something.

I say again something is wrong when all this isn’t being investigated in regards to a man that is running for president.

Comment by Just Say Nobama! | 2008-10-18 19:03:01

PK, I used to wait for Pringle’s installments to get published. Sometimes I’d wait for hours.
She is an amazing writer. Her work flows as well as any fiction writer, but is simply fact after fact. Her research is so methodical and
detailed. I can’t imagine that she is just sitting on the sidelines. I would think that she is following the Rezko/Combine/Blagojevich/
Daley trail. I am hopping that she is going to publish something soon. If Rezko has cut a deal with Fitzgerald I would think Pringle would be writing about it. She’s already laid the ground work to be filled in by any further findings on Obama. Seems she’s already connected the dots. I’m just waiting for her to add the exclamation points. Hell, I used to have her e-mail. Maybe I’ll contact her and see if something’s brewing on the horizon.

I think one thing that has frustrated me, personally, about this election is that it APPEARS to be a prime moment to really get beyond the idiocy of our campaign tactics…..and yet it’s been so darn hard! It would seem the media interferes these days with progress.

It takes someone like Joe the Plumber to cut through the fog of the media.

This really isn’t rocket science. Michelle Obama made that remark once, and I privately agreed with her.

Take abortion. We’re ripe for compromise on this. Enough already with voting for a supreme court justice who doesn’t exist. We can’t control that. End of story. It’s even forbidden to ask them hypothetical questions. They aren’t allowed to answer.

We’re done with fighting about nuclear energy. Build the dang plants. It’s obvious we’ve studied it. We know this technology. We MUST reduce our outflow for energy.

We’re finished with the issue on immigration. The Latinos may not like it, but borders will be important to people, even more now that the economy is headed into depression. There will be plenty of people willing to climb on roofs with pitches of tar to eat.

We’re finished with the public education issue. Tough one, but frankly…..nothing works. It’s time to compromise.

We can’t keep turning out stupid people.

There’s a lot of reasons to actually be rather excited this year, and I think it has to do with change. I just don’t think it happens to do with something as boring as switching parties in power.

It’s more fundamental.

Remember the “outrage” when Obama’s passport file was breached?

What if it was a planned breach by one of his minions? [[perhaps to cover his tracks on why he was able to travel to Pakistan at a time where US passport holders were not admitted]]

Just asking…. (and see below)

http://www.historycommons.org/timeline.jsp?timeline=civilliberties&civilliberties_surveillance=civilliberties_database_programs:

“The employees who broke into Obama’s files had access to his basic personal information, including his Social Security number, as well as his travel information, including information submitted by various US consulates from the nations to which Obama traveled . . .”

These employees worked for someone who advised Obama’s campaign. One break-in took place the day after the exif information on the FactCheck photos indicated that the photos were taken (3/13/2008).

Comment by ConcernedCitizenX | 2008-10-19 02:27:09

Please tell me if someone else has figured out this quite interesting possibility (and one which I think may be close to the truth): The land deal went down like this — the same owner sells Obama a lot for $300K less than asking price on the same day that Rita Rezko buys an adjacent lot for full price at $625K, which according to the whistle-blower who did the original appraisal is $125K over the actual full value of the property. It seems quite apparent to me that this was a backdoor way of giving Obama a BRIBE. Rezko made an arrangement with the seller to give Obama a 300K break on one property by agreeing to buy the other property for $125K more than it’s actual value. If you consider the high values of the properties involved, and consider that a normal buyer of each property would have negotiated a purchase price LOWER than the asking price, but not as much lower as Barack got, then what you see is that Rezko PAID BACK the owner of the properties for giving Obama a break on his lot by OVERPAYING for the other lot. So Rezko used a clever device to, in essence, give Obama an approximately $300K BRIBE in the form of an artificially cheap house. That’s why both deals went down on the same day, otherwise how could the seller be sure Rezko would make good on the arrangement? Make sense to anyone? Has anyone else noticed this?
