Mixed Messages or Media Wish Fulfillment?

Earlier yesterday, the Associated Press claimed the race for the Presidency was tied with Obama at 44% and McCain at 43%. I quote:

The presidential race tightened after the final debate, with John McCain gaining among whites and people earning less than $50,000, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll that shows McCain and Barack Obama essentially running even among likely voters in the election homestretch.

The poll, which found Obama at 44 percent and McCain at 43 percent, supports what some Republicans and Democrats privately have said in recent days: that the race narrowed after the third debate as GOP-leaning voters drifted home to their party and McCain’s “Joe the plumber” analogy struck a chord.

According to the AP article, McCain closed the gap for the following reasons: he had a strong debate performance last week; McCain’s television advertisements on Obama’s encounter with Joe the Plumber resonated with voters; and many voters believe their taxes will increase under an Obama administration.

Yahoo News must be dissatisfied with the results of the AP’s poll, for a few hours after the AP released the results of their survey Yahoo published a story on Sarah Palin entitled “A Drag on the Ticket?Normally one expects to read titles that are nothing more than unfounded allegations in the form of a question at partisan blogs, not on the websites of news organizations. But we are dealing with the American press, who in my opinion have demonstrated that they are nothing more than a group of Daily Kos drones with desks in press rooms this election cycle.

Citing an NBC poll and quoting Obamabot Chuck Todd of MSNBC, Yahoo News claims voters have reservations about Sarah Palin’s qualifications. But notice how they are unwilling to aver that voters have reservations about Palin in the article’s title. Also notice how they acknowledge Palin’s popularity in the first paragraph of the article. Phrasing the allegation as a question, Yahoo News hopes to raise doubts in the minds of readers who might otherwise have a favorable opinion of the Republican Vice Presidential running mate. That is their wish, and they hope it will be fulfilled as it is interpolated in the minds of readers who mistake their partisan bilge for so much factual news.

Let us return to the AP article. According to the subjects they interviewed, voters have concerns about Obama’s qualifications, not those of Sarah Palin. I quote:

“I trust McCain more, and I do feel that he has more experience in government than Obama. I don’t think Obama has been around long enough,” said Angela Decker, 44, of La Porte, Ind.

Notice how Yahoo News only quotes Obamabot and Washington elite political insider Chuck Todd, not an ordinary voter from the state of Indiana. If they bothered to interview ordinary voters, they would discover that most working Americans view Obama as unqualified.

But also notice why Yahoo News feels compelled to raise doubts about Palin. According to the AP poll, Caucasian voters and lower income voters who actually work for a living are abandoning Obama. I quote the AP again:

  • Posted big gains among likely voters earning under $50,000 a year; he now trails Obama by just 4 percentage points compared with 26 earlier.
  • Surged among rural voters; he has an 18-point advantage, up from 4.
  • Doubled his advantage among whites who haven’t finished college and now leads by 20 points. McCain and Obama are running about even among white college graduates, no change from earlier.
  • Made modest gains among whites of both genders, now leading by 22 points among white men and by 7 among white women.
  • Improved slightly among whites who are married, now with a 24-point lead.
  • Narrowed a gap among unmarried whites, though he still trails by 8 points.
  • McCain has cut into Obama’s advantage on the questions of whom voters trust to handle the economy and the financial crisis. On both, the Democrat now leads by just 6 points, compared with 15 in the previous survey.
  • Obama still has a larger advantage on other economic measures, with 44 percent saying they think the economy will have improved a year from now if he is elected compared with 34 percent for McCain.
  • Intensity has increased among McCain’s supporters.

How does one reduce McCain’s advantage with Caucasian women? How does one convince voters that the unprepared Obama has enough experience to address our current economic woes? How does one temper Palin’s appeal with rural voters? How does one neutralize McCain’s recent surge in the polls? The question to all these questions is to portray Sarah Palin, the woman who is drawing large crowds everywhere she campaigns, as unqualified, inexperienced and divisive. Misogyny determined the outcome of the primary, and it will surely sway some voters during the general election. Or at least this is the media’s wish.

So Yahoo News will publish questionable polling data from NBC on the same day one news organization announces that the race for the Presidency is tied. While some would interpret this as a mixed media message, I prefer to view it as so much media wish fulfillment. After all, the media dreams while its indolent reporters sleep.

After all, the media dreams while its indolent reporters sleep.

Well said. Here is hoping they will wake up to their nightmare on Nov 5th — a resounding defeat of their American Idol.

I would not call these people reporters or journalists. “Propagandists” or “shills” seem like better descriptions of what they do.

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-23 10:40:08

Journalism schools often turn out “talking head” types rather than journalists. There’s not much room for real journalism in TV. They rely upon print journalists for material.

And all the newspapers are pretty much crashing. Nobody is buying ads. ergo, no ad dollars. No money for in-depth research.

Most papers are pulling off AP wire material only, with filler stories from local areas.

Comment by athy | 2008-10-23 11:49:27

AnninCa,
I agree -today many journalism schools are turning out more talking heads instead of real journalists.
It’s what the major funders to these schools (who ultimately wind up hiring many of these journalism school graduates) are looking for.

So…the presidents and deans of these schools kowtow to these major funders at the expense of the integrity of the field of journalism…

Off topic but IMPORTANT-

AN EXCELLENT YOU TUBE VIDEO entitled

Barack Obama and “The Butcher of Kenya”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8QcpdUtxNQ

has been removed from youtube within the last 24 hours. Last time I checked, it had over 327,000 hits- and the hits kept growing at an exposnential rate these past few days.

The video was so well done that I anticipated that someone would remove it. I am not really sure why it was removed.

In any case, visit the following website which also has excellent embedded videos on Sen Obama and Kenya…

The media is acting like social issues aren’t a factor in this race. They aren’t paying a large a role as in previous elections, but they definitely are there. There are quite a few people who are disturbed about Obama’s support for abortion without limits — he even opposes parental notification for minors, supports partial birth abortion (even my liberal Republican senator Arlen Spector voted against it) and opposes the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. Come on now this is just basic human decency — no matter how you feel about abortion, shouldn’t a baby that survives “the procedure” be given medical attention (it’s rare, but it does happen). Obama says no!

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-23 11:31:32

That story was debunked.

BTW…I also agree with laws that do not require notification for minors.

Abortion is an issue upon which we are all going to need to compromise about, once and for all.

Comment by Hap Hazard | 2008-10-23 12:03:21

actually th story was not debunked. It was confirmed by the National Right to Life Committee. Obama called them liars, literally, which I think pissed them off, and they soon after produced the documents showing his votes, and demanded that he apologize, which he didn’t, of course. I agree that there needs to be some resolution on this issue, although I doubt if Obama were elected this would occur.

I am prochoice. But as a nurse the idea that someone will not give care to child that has air in its lungs is a bit much for me. I have always supported womens right to do what they want with a fetus that needs them for life, but once that baby shows it is trying to breath, that is where, there rights end and the infant’s begin.

Someone needs to do a piece on how the “power” candidate or politician controls the media through conditioning “access”. If you read Scott McClellan’s book you can see how it is done. Whoever is the “news” controls what is said about him and what is said about his opponents by denying access to anyone who dares to deviate from the message. Right now, the media thinks Obama is the power candidate and so his campaign controls the message. I personally feel that this practice should be made illegal – that politicians should not be able to condition their access at all. But that is the way it is and news organizations get special brownie points if they go above and beyond what is expected. I suspect Yahoo will be well rewarded for their attempt to distract.

What’s truly desperate is for RealClearPolitics to pad Obama’s portrayed voter lead by adding this University of Wisconsin Poll:

This is the biggest turd poll I’ve seen. What it has though are a > 10% cushion for all states polled favoring Obama.

Give me a break Madison, WI.

For once I had to agree with that obnoxious radio guy when he said that as the election gets closer the polls narrow because the pollsters have only their accuracy to sell.
At the end of the day those who’s numbers reflect the actual tally will get work next election cycle.

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-23 10:30:44

We’re in the home stretch now. Sarah has reassured the public that she’s capable and that she understands the role of a VP candidate. She’s doing her job. She’s disciplined. And effective. That’s all the public wants out of a VP, frankly.

Joe the Plumber FINALLY got through to the public on the tax plan issues. I know I have been saying the same thing for months. It was hard to cut through the campaign rhetoric to the bottom line truths. He effectively did that.

McCain is not simply rallying his base. He’s pulling in those Reagan Democrats. The more they see, the more they like. This group falls in love slowly. Remember the momentum? They aren’t kool-aid drinkers.

So we’ll see. The AP poll was, indeed, way low compared to the other polls.

Comment by mcpalin hill | 2008-10-23 10:54:54

annin — There is also the PUMAs–at least 7 million of us. In some ways we have been stronger for McCain than Republicans themselves. However, Republicans are proud of us for standing with them. The McCain Campaign has reached out to us and for that they have our undying loyalty.

Any smart person should know that if you split the party into Black vs White you cannot win. Obama spent 660 Million but it remains to be seen if all he got for all that money was a giant cult.

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-23 11:01:00

Well, I’m from a solid blue state, and there’s no split between black and white here.

So that, no doubt, informs my perspective.

CA will go for Obama. End of story.

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2008-10-23 11:08:43

California is not just black and white. Latinos far outnumber blacks and don’t forget Asians. When I was at the Sarah Palin rally here, there were tons of Latinos and Asians there. They could potentially tip California to McCain.

Comment by Deep Truths | 2008-10-23 11:19:55

Good observations. Blacks vote for Dems anyway. So to go from 90% to 95% ain’t no big deal. Even with a greater turnout of black voters, the voting population is only eight percent.

Its an asumption that Latinos favor Obama when in actuality it was John McCain that stuck his neck out for immigration reform.

Disaffected Hillary supporters and enlightened independents will win the day for McCain/Palin.

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-23 11:24:44

Well, I can assure you. CA will be blue, blue, blue.

John McCain lost the Latino vote here.

Not in FL, necessarily, but here, he lost their vote.

The only question is how badly will he lose here.

Comment by stodghie | 2008-10-23 11:33:43

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2008-10-23 11:36:31

Don’t be so sure. California has consistently gone red in AOL’s straw poll, which gets input from 100x more people than the traditional polls.

Comment by BerlinBerlin | 2008-10-23 12:01:55

I also think California is a possibility for McCain.
San Francisco and certain parts of LA are not the whole state.
Orange County, San Diego, the rural parts inland.
This might be close, but McCain can win here.
Villaraigosa was strong for Hillary, where is he now?

Comment by lisa in va | 2008-10-23 15:35:22

What has O’blahblah ever done for latinos? Zip! Most latinos I know have strong family values and pay attention to issues that affect them. I think they’d spot a snake oil salesman a mile away.

I think it will be a landslide for McCain & I think California is going red.

Comment by tzada | 2008-10-23 11:38:01

There was a “riot” at a big school (maybe in New York) the other day, between blacks and Latino youths. The school tried to calm them down saying that the Gov of New York was a minority and a minority was about to win the election for president. Now that may have set well with the blacks but I think it may have poured oil on the fire with the Hispanics.

Blacks and Chicano mainly don’t get along. I know I used to live in Calif.

Chicano for the most part are Catholic. The church has come out against Polosi and Biden and Obama for their abortion leaning.

Obama has tried to buy their votes, with the drivers license for illegal aliens. Bad idea. But it has been John McCain at times in the barrio working with his hands over the years. It has been Cindy going over seas and helping, before John ran for president, the first time.

As for both Asians and Hispanics when their numbers started to grow, Obama said that he would see to it that none of the blacks lost their seats to either of these groups. Yea right he is for ALL the people. Wrong… and so is he.

Comment by BerlinBerlin | 2008-10-23 12:12:24

“The church has come out against Polosi and Biden and Obama for their abortion leaning.”

I even had the impression that pope Benedict sended a message.
He was calling his visit here “Christ our Hope”
At the time BO was still deep in the hope-business.
And he mentioned Hillary by name in one of his speeches. Only Hillary.

My hope is that our vote-by-race black brothers and sisters are only 8% of the voting population.
Is that so?
That’s hope I can believe in.

Go Sarah!

Comment by Dawnelle | 2008-10-23 12:53:39

That is a fact. They are quiet about it but they exist.

Comment by sharonevolving | 2008-10-23 12:09:03

Hey gang – I am in CA, Santa Barbara, to be exact. I agree with Anninca – it does look bleak here at times. My town tends to go Republican, as does San Diego, but the state goes blue. HOWEVER, I am seeing more and more McCain signs around, but I’ve been told by Obama supporters (who naturally assume I am one too) that they try to run people with McCain bumper stickers off the road. I used to live in Texas, and thought the Christian coalition was a little nuts at times. But the liberals out here make me ashamed to have ever proudly called myself one.
But I am hoping CA might break its ranks at least once. And yes, we do have the Republican Governator. I am pulling McCain Palin, shocking friends and family everywhere, but I am a big believer in country over party!

It’s interesting that there is an active Democratic grassroots working for the Republican this cycle. A group of insurgent Democrats rejecting the party.

Democratic crossover votes have not been a factor in an election since Bill Clinton brought the “Reagan Democrats” home in 1992. I honestly don’t see how a Democrat can win without a united Democratic party and anyone who thinks that this current situation is what unity looks like…is blind.

Comment by propertius | 2008-10-23 11:04:34

What appalled me about the “Joe” incident wasn’t Obama’s policy itself – it was the condescension and hostility towards an ordinary voter who just asked him a simple question (followed, of course, by the concerted effort to completely destroy him on the part of Obama himself, Biden, and their churlish ovine catamites in the media and on the net).

This bothered me for a couple of reasons: first, if you can’t tolerate dissent you have no business being the leader of a republic. Second, what does his simultaneously lame and virulent response say about his ability to handle himself under pressure? If an ordinary, Ohio plumber can get under Obama’s skin this way, what will Putin do to him? I really don’t want to find out.

Comment by jackie | 2008-10-23 11:18:00

Yes. Last week, a co-worker (Obama supporter) starting talking politics and he said, “You know that Joe the Plummer guy? He isn’t who he says he is. He’s not Joe. He’s not from Ohio. And he owes taxes! He was a Republican plant!”

He only reads MSM. My first thought was, why is the Democratic party attacking a blue collar worker? I thought is was a huge mistake. It made me so mad that they were trying to destroy this guy. All he did was ask a question about taxes and then Obama and Biden started mocking this guy. I can’t believe how mean spirited the party has become. I am glad there is a backlash about Joe the Plummer. There should be. Shame on the Democrats.

Comment by Fran | 2008-10-23 11:54:17

A Republican plant?! Obama walked up to Joe’s house.

Comment by Zeke | 2008-10-23 12:32:48

Yeah, but two years ago, the Republicans anticipated that Obama would not only run, but that he would come to that neighborhood. They surreptitiously purchased the house and started training “Joe” in the arts of Debate. William F. Buckley was smuggled in and he worked extensively with “Joe” prior to his passing.
After cramming economics, international law, history of race relations, and current theories on Arugula farming into his library-like mind, “Joe” was ready.
The Republicans are always looking to the future…

Big mistake for the Dems and the media when they attacked Joe the Plumber. I believe that this more than anything that Joe actually said has had an effect. It would be good to see Palin turn the tables on Couric and Gibson– maybe she could call them in and interview them about why they hate women, then edit their answers to maker them look stupid(er), then use Voice of America, Fox, and Rush to broadcast it all over the planet.

Comment by lisa in va | 2008-10-23 15:45:34

bert — what I would like to see if the Republicans take Congress is an investigation of what actually went on during this election, money changing hands, Acorn and was Hillary cheated out of the nomination with only a 4 delegate difference? I want to see Pelosi having to explain herself on that and also why she waited to take up the Bail Out till the Fall because it would make a great election issue. How many banks might have been saved and how many people might have been able to keep their homes if she took this on earlier.

Many Americans have distrusted the liberal media for decades and don’t give a fig what they say. In fact, their criticism of a pol may just make the public believe the opposite. And even if people foolishly believed Palin is less than stellar, look who has been elected–real dopes like Quayle and W.

The media is anything but liberal.
How else do you account for the breathless reporting of any rumor about the upcoming Clinton scandal that never was?
How do you rebut the media gleefully trashing Al Gore by taking his quotes out of context or making them up out of whole cloth to smear him?
How do you argue that the media reported the Swiftboat lies about John Kerry without comment as to their truthfulness?
What about the New York Times parroting the lies about Iraqi WMDs put out by dick Cheney?
The media is in this for the media so the Keith Obermanns, Chris Matthewses, and Maureen Dowds can strut and preen showing you what smart witty journalists they are. Besides ensuring a healthy bottom line for their corporate masters.

Frankly, I have been surprised that they have trashed McCain so viciously because they used to like him. I guess when the new kid on the block appears, you just throw your old favorite on the trash heap.

And, like Kerry who asked McCain to be his running mate (finally confirmed by McCain) you make a crude joke about him wearing adult diapers.

Larse12
I checked out this website-I can not vouch for its credibility however I did listen to the audio on the link you provided and I read through some of the articles-

Again- dont know if this website is credible or not howver one article did catch my eye.

The article discussed a sexually perverse book that Davis SUPPOSIDLY wrote under a pen name.SUPPOSIDLY the book was published two years before Sen Obama became Davis’ mentee in Hawaii-acc to article.

SUPPOSIDLY this book is no longer available.

If someone could locate an original copy of this book- it would be very explosive.

SUPPOSIDLY , acc to the article on link you provide- DAVIS-writing under a pen name- described his early sexual escapades which included having sex repeatedly with a young woman named ANNE- book’s author states he and his wife had sex with this young woman and …it was the young woman who initiated the relationship.

Now…I read this article with an open mind- not ruling anything out. I have no comment at this point except to say-this needs to be investigated further.

Back in those days, our own govt engaged in many smear campaigns against people our govt viewed as threats-(look what they did to Martin Luther King)
so…this book might be a smear campaign..or else it could be the real deal…

http://obambi.wordpress.com/2008/10/22/obama-mentor-marxist-poet-frank-marshall-davis/

About the particular article I refer to in my comment: I do not remember the EXACT HEADLINE -But headline includes the words Sexual Perversion & Rape (I think).

WHO IS PAYING FOR BARACK’S TRIP TO HAWAII????

HE MADE IT CLEAR THAT THIS TRIP IS FOR PERSONAL REASONS

IS HE USING CAMPAIGN FUNDS?
IS HE USING THE CAMPAIGN PLANE???

Comment by Elle | 2008-10-23 10:56:27

Yes good point and with Michelle Obama spending 500 dollars on caviar, lobster and champagen for a snack
it would add up to 60 k a month of you add 3 regualr meals totalling 2k a day on her eating habbits alone .

Heck, he’s been earning a salary while campaigning since he got to the Senate! We’ve been paying a whole lot for Mr. Obama’s quest for power for quite awhile! Including his visit to Odinga last year….

Comment by mcpalin hill | 2008-10-23 11:15:08

timeforarealitycheck — Hell yes the Obama campaign is paying for the trip and the media is saying what a wonderful guy to be loyal to his Grandmother in the middle of a campaign. GET IT PEOPLE! Obama is a good guy who is loyal to his gramma. Isn’t that the guy we want to vote for (BARF) He will be in Hawaii for 2 days — if God forbid she dies on the third day–well Obama will be back campaigning.

Comment by poison acorn | 2008-10-23 11:52:24

Fine, just fine for BadRock to take time off from campaigning to visit ailing granny, but absolutely atrocious and a stunt when Mccain takes time away from his campaign to go back to the Capitol and take care of the nation’s business.

I just don’t get it.

Comment by Idiocracy08 | 2008-10-23 11:26:26

Comment by tzada | 2008-10-23 12:02:27

Who paid for his trip to Kenya? I think it was taxpayers. Where he campaigned for his cousin. Raila Odinga. It is interesting to learn that same man had intended if he became president to change that country into a Muslim one. His platform was CHANGE!!!
Anyone surprised?

Since his cuz advocated violence to get his way, is it surprising that Barack tell his voters to “get in their face”? Odinga killed people, burned them up, mainly women and children in a church. Hacked other to death when they tried to escape. Condi Rice went over there and persuaded the president to create a new position and make Odinga prime minister. Can you see the corrupt Congress doing that should Barack lose?

BTW Obama said he needs extra Secret Service men for his anticipated coronation in Chicago. He also expect Homeland Security to pick up the bill for that.

Well, misogyny would sit well with that one, no? That one would probably do a positive review of something Yahoo later on.

The truth is that we are in a transition from the way we were in the last two/three decades of the 20th. Century to something different. And what is that something different? I’ll let you decide.

As an outsider looking in I have to acknowledge and appreciate the fairness of the American people — this exercise also helped me better understand what I assumed to be the Republican mentality of stinginess. First most of them don’t necessarily have too much against spread the wealth in the sense of giving a leg up to hard working and deserving people with good work ethic. What they object to is giving their hard earned dollars to undeserving perhaps lazy who don’t help themselves. Obama’s plan to give a handout to 40% of the people who don’t pay any tax is seen as just that and that is what they are objecting to. Now Obama camp is scrambling to change that by adding a last minute work component to whatever their tax plan is and doing it surreptitiously so they can come back and lie later that that was always their intention. Again despicable in more ways than one. Joe the Plumber was Obama’s and media’s nightmare.

Comment by MrMike | 2008-10-23 10:58:16

What they object to is giving their hard earned dollars to undeserving perhaps lazy who don’t help themselves.

To be fair some of them don’t know how to help themselves. As long as American school systems are funded they way they are it is a guarantee that children in the poorer districts will fail.

Comment by ces | 2008-10-23 11:20:19

Here, I’ll fix it for you:

“As long as parents in American School systems don’t get involved they way they should be it is a guarantee that children in any district will fail.”

Notice I didn’t say the parents had to be highly educated themselves, just involved. My whole family are educators (one a grade school teacher in the poorest district in MI), and the one thing is clear: The kids whose parents come to meetings and allow the professionals to do their jobs, are the ones who don’t cause problems and work hard, regardless of their grades. You can’t throw money at the school and think that solves everything.

Comment by pm317 | 2008-10-23 11:44:12

I agree with you that things have to change to lift the poor. But the comment was specific to Obama’s tax plan of throwing crumbs at people who don’t pay taxes.

Comment by tzada | 2008-10-23 12:17:28

Anyone can do anything they truly want to do. Case in point Abe Lincoln.

Not to compare myself to Abe, but I did not have an easy time. I started school at 4. Was pulled out at 5 1/2 and had NO school of any kind until I was 12 1/2. Seven years of not even a rudimentary education. But I was lucky to have learned to read and write in that first year and a half. I read everything I could find, and after testing was placed in 7th grade. I graduated at 18. I did it, so anyone that at least has a school and teachers of any kind has no excuse.

That said I agree all schools should be treated equal. But when parents allow their children or others to deface and destroy what they have then, taxpayers get tired of footing the bill again.

Very apt comment about Obama Tax Plan. Those 40% who do not pay taxes will just increase the spennding burden on welfare. He had to change it. But too late. Obama Tax Plan is now mocked as the Obama Expanded Welfare Tax Plan. Instead of making us richer. He wants to make the rich poorer and Hopes the poor gets richer by takign money from those who pay taxes and give to those who don’t.

Wake up America!!!!!!

Comment by tzada | 2008-10-23 12:22:02

Yeah the money they get will make China Walmart richer and Hollywood as well. It will not go to the small business that are trying to stay afloat and they will sink under the added tax.

Palin is THE real change. The only one of the four who is NOT a Washington insider. Even though Obama is the youngest or newest insider he has been in training for this campaign for 20 years. Obama wasn’t corrupted by Washington, he developed that through practice in Chicago politics, a product of Saul Alinski and William Ayers.

Just thought I would mention it. The private parts of the pics are covered so I guess that makes it all not so bad. The big story after this is all over will be how much money Senator Government paid to all the networks to preach the mighty one’s message. Journalism is dead.

Comment by Deep Truths | 2008-10-23 11:09:29

AP had to get its act together after it lost Obama papers because it was raising its fee. It has cast its lot for truth and the people.

There is no way that polls swing from plus 3 to plus 13 just before debates or bad news. It is a coordinated psychological attack that will go on until the afternoon of November 4th.

But the American people are not sitting still. They are voting in early voting in huge numbers. They are pissed and disappointed in the so-called free press. Seventy percent believe that the media is in the tank for Obama, which shows a level of awareness that should scare the MSM and the Obama campaign. If you’re bamboozling and the majority of the people can define it, then you’re not winning the bamboozling game.

The public was also awake when the misogeny was in full swing against Hillary. Hillary would have easily won over those ‘disaffected Republicans’. Now McCain and Palin will win over ‘disaffected Hillary democrats’.

With a energized base, who are definitely NOT staying home, all McCain needs is 10% of democratic votes. He already has a committed 23% of Hillary votes and unknown 5 to 15% more Hillary democrats beyond that number. Add to the fact that an unprecedented 65 to 80% hang-ups on the polls (signalling further dissatisfaction with the ‘media’) and its pointing to a McCain/Palin landslide.

I live and vote in a deep blue state and I do not feel that my vote is useless. I believe that if McCain wins the electoral college but loses the total popular vote, there will be no end to the howling from the left, and it will definetly be claimed that McCain has no mandate.

A strong win for McCain/Palin in the electoral vote AND the popular vote may be the best way to prevent Obama from attempting future runs at the presidency. Obama must be sent into political exile, a resounding defeat is the best way to achieve that.

Comment by sharonevolving | 2008-10-23 13:23:37

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-10-23 11:15:46

I think the issue with the polling companies has pretty much been laid out for those curious about this phenomena.

It has to do with projected turn-out.

And there really isn’t any way to guarantee that aspect of the election.

I think the polls are over-estimating Democratic turn-out. I think it will be high. I also do not think they will get the anticipated high percentage of certain fringe populations who did register and have been discussed ad nauseum this year. It’ll be a split.

For example, in the Houston area, I was really surprised to read that the actual stats for the AA voter turn-out were lower than in the past. Why? Because the population has shifted to other areas.

So I think some of the polling paradigms are off-kilter.

The AP poll was too dramatically different for me to trust. Battleground says 3 points today, I understand?

That means, the race is tightening. I look at the rally attendance, the enthusiasm, which is huge, and the fact that McCain has successfully defined this election into terms people get. That helps voters. No ambiguity left now. People like to know what they are voting “FOR,” not some far-fetched story or fear-based nonsense.

He’s succeeded. And Palin is very disciplined and always on message.

Obama is the one on the defense now, because of Biden’s remarks. Also, the news that we would be attacked by Bin Laden isn’t exactly bad for John. *haha

(god forbid it happens)

John has a shot.

I agree with you. The poll swing obviously has tossed this salad right up in the air.

No reason to believe that Obama has reached a tipping point.

Sarah was a game changer, in spite of the Conservatives who worry over that choice.

Joe the Plumber……..another game changer.

Debates……another game changer.

What McCain has shown us is that you don’t NEED an OCTOBER surprise or attack ads.

You simply need to nail down your message effectively.

Rove is even writing nicely about McCain today.

When I saw Drew Griffin from CNN pull that absurd crud on Sarah Palin with an intentional(MHO)cruel misquote – I thought oh, they got to good old Drew. Drew was the one reporter on CNN who was reporting fairly on ACORN. Wasn’t it on CNN that Anderson Cooper got snarky with Drew during his report challenging hey man what are you saying style? A number of posters here noticed and some including myself thought, hey here comes Drew’s pink slip. Well, Drew is another slob who doesn’t deserve the public trust. Poll numbers, inaccurate reports – how about blatant lies – Andrea Mitchell was interviewing a McCain spokesperson about the brutal honesty not gaffe, by Biden – and of course Andrea carrying Barry’s water in place of her brain, refused to play the whole clip – playing only a portion that carried zippo meaning. When challenged by the McCain spokesperson Andrea cut her off and when returning played a harmless clip of Biden from an entirely different event. WTF? I repeat WTF? How is that allowed? Play something blatantly FALSE?
I’m fuming about this. This is not only a disgrace, the media is actively stealing our Democracy. I don’t know exactly but this sure feels like TREASON. Anyone in the Justice Dept. give a crap? Anyone in this Country in charge of preventing a Coup? Or are we to continue to worry about protecting their free speech and watch our Country be sent down the shitter?

Comment by Andrew191 | 2008-10-23 13:09:40

Re: CNN reporting.

It’s a small point but very illustative of the ethical vacuum at CNN.
Greta had done an extensive set of interviews in Alaska with multiple Palin associates, I watched the whole thing. When Greta asked Palin’s former minister if he talked in tongues he answered very distinctly “I do not.” When CNN rebroadcast that exact interview they editted out the end of the ministers sentence. This is how it played on CNN. Greta: Do you talk in tongues? Minister: I do (cut)

Don’t believe a damn word that CNN,ABC,MSNBC,CBS, and the rest of the dissemblers toss out at you.

If I had no journalistic ethics I could easily have quoted out of context a statement that Obama made in the second debate, “I have post tramatic stress dissorder, and I can’t get any help.” He did say that,(check the transcript) and taken as I’ve quoted it sure sounds like an admition of mental/emotional problems. I suppose that I should provide the context in which that statement was made, but WTH, I’m not a journalist!

Obama has said he is not Muslim. Everybody knows Obama is a member of a Christian church that believes “white people’s greed runs a world in need”, “US of KKKA”, etc.

Voters accept Obama at his world that he is not Muslim and have seen video evidence (Wright at Trinity Church) to support that!

So please…Obama needs to simply produce his B.C. to show where he was born. That’s it! American citizen, eligible for President, not hard! AND CERTAINLY NOT RACIST AT ALL!

Air America tried it.

I was shocked, initially, by how incredibly insensitive the media was being toward a huge, huge market share.

By the end of this season, I’ve decided they are nothing more than boutique news sources. They know they are offending people. They have given up attracting those viewers.

They are trying to develop a niche market.

That’s their survival plan, obviously.

On the day Palin gives her Beijing women’s speech, the MSM focuses on her wardrobe.

Her women’s rights are human rights line:

“And I was lucky to have a lot of support at home, too. Now among the many things that I owe my parents is one simple lesson, and that was this is America and every woman can walk through every door of opportunity. The belief in equal opportunity is not just the cause of feminists, it’s the creed of our country-equal opportunity. And if I’m given the honor of serving you in the White House, I intend to advance that creed in our own nation and beyond because across the world, there are still places where women are subjugated and persecuted as they were in Afghanistan, places where they’re bullied and brutalized and murdered in honor killings, places where women are sold like commodities in the nightmare world of the sex trade, and places where baby girls are unwelcome as a matter of state policy and their mothers are forced to have abortions. Now no one person, no one leader, can bring an end to all of those ills, to all of the injustices inflicted upon women, but I can promise you this, if I am elected, these women, too, will have an advocate and a defender in the 47th vice president of the United States.”

That’s immature.

People voted in George Bush, folks. And they wanted revenge. And now they would like to pretend that isn’t so.

And once again, people have access to information that tells them they are about to give power over to the party that crashed the economy more than anyone, through Freddie and fannie.

One in ten (90%) of the Europens say Obama should be our next president. Even though most of them also say they are not ready to vote for their own Obamas. To make a long story short, the Europeans want America to become more European. But how they can get that (Euporean) through Kenya is a puzzle to me.

This one had me laughing – new headline at Yahoo:

McCain, Obama neck-and-neck for rural vote

The first paragraph says this:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – After trailing by 10 points in U.S. rural areas, Democrat Barack Obama is neck-and-neck with Republican John McCain among rural voters in 13 swing states, a potentially key group for winning the White House, according to a poll released on Thursday.

I just don’t know who they think they’re fooling anymore – 0fraud is NEVER gonna get the rural vote – these people who, according to the elitist democrats, are “bitter” and “clinging to their bibles and their guns” are not stupid, and as much as barky would like them to be, they ARE JUST PLAIN NOT INSANE! Therefore, they ain’t voting for barky.

Are you kidding me. Take this example only 10 minutes old.

Obama giving an excellent speech in Indianapolis.

He attacks 18 thousand corporation by stating that the reason ‘the reason’ that they are incorporated in the Cayman Islands is to defraud the American people.

(So the market begins to go down)

The he tells his audience that McCain is for Wall Street but he is for them (taking ownership of their work places) getting what they deserve. Socialism in the raw but nobody notices.

(So the market goes down hill)

Then the CNN anchor says 10 minutes later that ‘after being high up now the market is down and he thinks it is probably the jobs report.’

You decide.

I live in north Texas, and even here I see a lot of white people who are afraid to show support for McCain.

The AP and IBD polls are great news for McCain supporters. McCain is solidifying his support amongst the people who actually vote on Election Day.

This black guy is not someone anyone should vote for.

Well, I think of it more the “New Bradley Effect” – meaning yes, barky is “the black guy” and yes, there are a lot of people afraid to say they won’t vote for him, but “the black guy” part is actually a technicality that the barky campaign says is the reason, when it’s not.

-1- The real reasons people won’t vote for him number in the millions (including corruption, inexperience, bad judgment, shady past, dishonesty, stealing the nomination, on and on and on and on…) but are reduced by the 0bots and the 0media to just one – “he’s the black guy in a racist, backward, red-neck country.”

-2- The real reasons people won’t say they’re not voting for him is fear and intimidation.

And those, I think, are the 2 components of THE NEW BRADLEY EFFECT.

WOW! This is a must read.
A liberal journalist calls out the national media on how it has ignored the Dems role in the Freddie / Fanny crisis.
I wish every independent and undecided voter in the country could read this article.

Here’s a snip:

Isn’t there a story here? Doesn’t journalism require that you who produce our daily paper tell the truth about who brought us to a position where the only way to keep confidence in our economy was a $700 billion bailout? Aren’t you supposed to follow the money and see which politicians were benefiting personally from the deregulation of mortgage lending?

I have no doubt that if these facts had pointed to the Republican Party or to John McCain as the guilty parties, you would be treating it as a vast scandal. “Housing-gate,” no doubt. Or “Fannie-gate.”

Whole article here:

In an earlier post someone asked the simple question:

How can a democrat win after alienating half of his party?
Women, older people, white blue collar etc.

Think Begala said it early in the primaries: You can’t win a GE with just Eggheads and African Americans.

Let’s enjoy the final days.
McCain will win!

Look at the Gallup trend:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/111415/Gallup-Daily-Obama-Has-Modest-Lead-Among-Likely-Voters.aspx

Note also that Battleground (Not Big 10 battleground, which is crap) is Obama +2 today (+1 yesterday) and the complete trend there…

Note the AP Obama +1 poll…

Note IBD/Tipp at Obama +4 yesterday (after being +7 the day before).

The RACE is on…completely…’gird your loins’ folks, we CAN do this. The state polls mean little in the sense that many are done by organizations skewing their data to lean WAY TOO MUCH dem.

Faith..have it.

Courage…vote.

Conviction…take a friend!

Take care,
Patrick

Right. Make sure we all take into account the fact that gallup also reported that there are no more new voters this year than there were in 2004. The polls have been basing their weights on all of the new young democrats who were supposed to be out there. Well..they aren’t.

So my guess would be that the polls have been off all along.

We’re going to win this thing!!!

I’ll addend my own post!

IBD/Tipp now Obama +1!

Look, it is now UNARGUABLE that the polls that have this ANY HIGHER than a four-point race are outliers. FLAT OUT WRONG.

IBD/Tipp was Obama +7 two days ago, +4 yesterday and +1 today.

Battleground was +4 two days ago, +1 yesterday and +2 today.

Gallup was +7 two days ago, +5 yesterday and +4 today (expanded has an even larger trend towards mccain +10 tue., +8 yesterday and +5 today).

AP has it +1 Obama.

This is now essentially a statistical dead heat.

KNOW IT. BELIEVE AND VOTE!

take care,
Patrick

That AP-GfK poll also overweighed the ’social conservative’ factor by around 2x what is considered standard, with 44% of respondents identifying as evangelicals or born again Christians. Maybe all those voters are coming out for Palin this cycle, but the more plan Bs and Cs McCain has the better.

as a (former) democrat, even i dont want to see one party rule. a democratic congress, senate and executive branch would be disastorous for the country. we need some balance of power in govt. so thesres no need to worry about a mccain presidency as much as an obama presidency.
