Putting A Fine Edge On Proposition 8
By Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy on November 4, 2008 at 4:00 PM in Backtrack Obama, Bamboozling, Barack Obama, GLBT, Joe Biden, John McCain, Pandering, Rev. James Meeks
My partner and I CHOOSE to spread our wealth around to a number of non-profit organizations (our choice, not the govenrment’s), unlike the Obamas and Bidens, who choose to give very little of theirs, especially compared to the McCains and Palins. But I digress. The point is that one of the (many)organizations we support is the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR). Imagine my surprise when I got the following email from them the other day:
Dear Amy:
Emergency Situation
No On 8 Obama
Proponents of Prop 8 sent a deceptive mailer insinuating that Barack Obama and Joe Biden support their effort. Both have denounced this tactic and reminded voters that they oppose Prop 8.
We cannot let this go unanswered.
We need to respond quickly and effectively through new flyers, paid phone banks and get out the vote efforts countering this lie.
Give Today Green No On 8
Ask you friends and family to donate.
There are times in a political campaign when you think you know what you need to do to win.
We said we needed $3 million in 3 days to win this campaign. And over 24,000 of you helped us meet that goal.
And then the other side does something so insidious you must react.
Proponents of Prop 8 sent a deceptive mailer insinuating that Barack Obama and Joe Biden support their effort to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.
They are using this and other shameful tactics to try to mislead undecided voters throughout California.
They have forced us into an emergency situation.
We cannot let this go unanswered. We need to respond quickly and effectively through new flyers, paid phone banks and get out the vote efforts countering this lie.
We are running out of time.
Donate now so we can counter this appalling tactic.
In solidarity,
Kate Kendell
Executive Committee Member
No On Prop 8
Guess who we won’t be supporting anymore?? You got it! Just more money to send to other organizations who don’t try to manipulate their members!
Whaddya they mean they “cannot let this go unanswered”? Obama and Biden DO oppose same-sex marriage! Obama has made this clear time and time and time again, in his debates, in his statements, in his choice of associates:- McClurkin, Meeks, and ESPECIALLY Doug Kmiec, the former Reagan/Bush attorney who is an ACTIVE PROPONENT OF PROPOSITION 8. Kmiec was Obama’s choice to lead his “Faith Tour” - an attorney. He chose an attorney to lead his evangelical faith tour around the country (as if there weren’t enough problems with the whole concept from the get-go! Heck, I even worked as a paralegal when I lived up North, but I surely don’t go around billing myself as an authority on the law. Anywho - I digress again.) Now, I admit that Obama has said that they shouldn’t change the law now that it is in place, but to imply, as NCLR does, that he SUPPORTS same-sex marriage is a flat out lie. I have written about this a gazillion times already:
“Two-fer: Faith Train and Same Sex Marriage”
“So What”, with the bonus of Joe Biden saying emphatically that he and Obama are opposed to same-sex marriage.
“Going to the Chapel and We’re Gonna Get Married”, also a two-fer since it deals mainly with CT, BUT it also deal’s with Doug Kmiec, Obama’s F(aith) buddy.
“It Was Only A Matter Of Time”
And one from my blog on Same Sex Marriage, link HERE.
I might add, my friend, Truthteller, had an outstanding post on Obama and the GLBT community, at No Quarter: “Barack Obama’s Compulsively Repeated Gay Bashing Risks the Loss of A Key Voting Bloc”. This is an EXCELLENT overview of all the ways in which Obama has screwed (ahem) the LGBT community.
All of that is to say, Obama did send a letter of support to opponents of Proposition 8, but as this article clearly points out, he opposes same-sex marriage. He and John McCain have the SAME position on this issue. Only McCain, as I have written before, does not shy away from his gay friends when they need him. He supports and embraces them, unlike Obama. This article demonstrates, in one place, how Obama panders to whichever side he thinks will get him elected, all in ONE ARTICLE! It is staggering - he opposes Same-Sex marriage everywhere else but CA, apparently. At least until the voting is done. That’s his MO, and if any GLBT people think he will truly stand on their side, they are sadly mistaken. Just ask his formerly gay buddy, Donnie McClurkin. Or his actively anti-gay BFF James Meeks. Or Doug Kmiec, hater of equal rights for GLBT people. Oh - and ask Gavin Newsome how he felt about Obama dissing him over a photo shoot just because he SUPPORTS same sex marriage. Oh, yeah - what a guy.
The information is there, people - don’t be hoodwinked or bamboozled on this issue, I ask you. Don’t let Obama get over on this - he doesn’t deserve the pass.

RRRAmy…I am so sorry. Just more people being swindled by OBozo. I think that 8 is going to be fine for you guys. Honestly. But I understand the way you are feeling. I hate some of my gay friends vote for the guy. I tried. What can we do? I voted and I know that helps.
Screw Prop 8! If you are gay, stay in the closet!
Regular (straight, normal) people shouldn’t
have to see or know your gay! What you do behind closed doors is your business, just as it is for
straight (normal) people. Marriage is sacred,
for a man and woman (bible say’s so)! Why is
it so imprtant for you guy’s to get married
anyway? Queers don’t need tax breaks!!!!!!!
Obama gets away with everything. Race-baiting, sexism, homophobic policies. Vote hopey-change
It’s reminiscent of human perception at the scene of an accident. Out of 50 eye-witnesses you’ll be lucky to get 5 respondents who got the correct context, chain of events and actual facts correct.
Most people are horrific observers of human events.
NONE OF THE CANDIDATES HAVE EVER BEEN FOR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE.
Yet, millions of dollars goes to these groups who work to Endorse the Democrats because they create scenarios where the Democrats will be less threatening to the states who allow same-sex marriages.
This is cruel, but if you are leveraging this issue to decide who you’re going to vote for then you only reinforce the notion that Common Sense is an Oxymoron.
All of these LGBT and women’s organizations jumping on the Obama bandwagon just make me sick to my stomach. If they are honest, they surely see that Obama does not give a flying f**k about LGBT or women’s issues, but they choose to lap up the crumbs of acknowledgment thrown their way rather than stand up and demand more …
They will get nothing from an Obama presidency other than rhetoric - he doesn’t GAIN anything from acting on these issues, so he will do nothing of substance to support them.
I went to the Republican county headquarters where I live this weekend to volunteer for the McCain campaign. I was talking to one of the local party officials and I identified myself as a Hillary Clinton supporter. The woman said to me she felt the Democratic party never really cared about women’s issues they just cared about getting women’s votes.
It was such a simple statement and yet I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. The truth of it was almost too much to bear.
Good luck to everyone today and thank you for all your efforts.
The lesson I took from the DOMA in my state? There are just as many bigoted Dems as there are bigoted Repubs.
Good luck, opponents of prop 8.
Dean,
I think it may just be that there are less “bigots” about this issue on the Repub side. It is obviously true that the right has opinions about LGBT which don’t support their issues, but the Repubs seem to view it more as a case of it being a “Rights” issue and the Repubs have been pretty open about individual rights. They won’t agree with you about this issue but they are usually pretty ok with you having your own opinion.
It only gets nasty with them when someone says they shouldn’t get to believe what they do.
This is, at least from my observations of the way it goes, about where the Repubs I know see things.
As always, I’ve been wrong before… don’t expect to bat .1000 in the future either.
Regards and,
God Bless America
Zeke, I am gay and my experiences this year as a PUMA suggest to me that you are right about this. I’ve learned a lot about jumping to conclusions from watching the Obots. I hope and pray that Senator McCain and Governor Palin win this election. But if they do not, I have made my own “journey of personal discovery” in 2008, and I am a better person for it.
Thank you for this post. Stop and think of how many trusted people and trusted groups you have noticed have sh$t all over the truth - and us just since the Primaries. Frankly, I feel like a fool. What the hell was I thinking and when I ask myself, how didn’t I see this before, before Hillary, before this election I come back to the same answer - the media, the press. I always associated certain causes with “goodness” and others with revulsion- I had huge disgust for Fox News - boy what a difference a year and a half makes. All of what I thought was so stupidly shaped by the likes of a groups ability to garner good press and shove it thru CNN and NBC. Not anymore. Thank God for the internet and sites like this and posters like Rev. Amy.
Great comments, y’all. And I agree, Obama will do nothing for these groups. But organizations like NOW, Planned Parenthood, and HRC sold their souls to hook their wagons to Obama’s star, not ever admitting who he really is, how he really treats women, and how he really treats GLBT people. Hopefully, this will all be a moot point by tonight, but if not, and Obama steals this election like he did the nominattion, I guess will just see how much he does - and if ANY of these groups will ever admit that they threw their constituents under the bus…
I think their constituents are gonna notice, nothing happens. I think there are gonna be a lot of very unhappy people waking up slowly. It’s going to be hard for me to feel compassion for them. Really hard.
So well put, Rev…
I just voted, WOW It felt GREAT putting in the marker for John McCain and Sarah Palin, it just felt GREAT
It was fantastic wasn’t it!
Lol, Gratz Sarra!
Weather out here in NE WA State is pissy. Glad i voted early by mail ballot.
a few day ago i got a flyer
Vote YES on 8 with BO and MO on the front cover. on the back, there was the endorsement of 4 black preachers
pastor tony dockery/st stephen baptist church
pastor ed smith-zoe/christian fellowship-whittier
bishop donald e. green/san francisco christian center
dr phillip goudeaux/calvary christian center
and also has a quote from joe bidet ……..
The post I mentioned at my log is based on this article from the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/21/us/politics/21gay.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&oref=slogin
In it, it says that Obama running may be BAD for Prop 8 because it will increase the number of AAs voting, and many of them are OPPOSED to same sex marriage.
The thing with the flyer is that it doesn’t lie abt their general position on same-sex marriage. Obama has said that time and again. He is PANDERING to CA by saying he doesn’t to go back on the gain made.
I have a BIG TIME bot co-worker (I almost tore his head off after he called Hillary a c*nt during the primaries). At lunch last week, I asked him how he felt that a lot of the traditional black vote that is flocking to Obama might tilt enough support to pass Amendment 2 here in Florida.
He stated that if the passage of Amendment 2 is what it took to get Obama elected, he didn’t care.
Fauxgressives, the lot of them. It’s so past the point of policies and politics these days. It’s all about the cult of personality and punishing Republicans…. gays and lesbians, as usual, get screwed.
Anyone who thinks a Black Panther (Old and New) Party supporting misogynistic Marxist would be gay friendly has been drinking industrial strength Kool Aid.
Geez oh pete, did none of these people watch the VP debate and see Biden clearly state he opposes gay marriage?
What type of Kool-Aid are they drinking? It must be some seriously powerful stuff!
The Kool Aid overrides all critical thinking skills.
I’m hearing from sources in PA and VA that exit pollers are bending over backwards to talk to minorities and whoever they think looks like an Obama voter. When the exit polls start to come out, expect them to be very very skewed. Hopefully no-one will be tempted not to vote based on that drivel.
Hey Shiloh, how are things looking in PA right now, are we gonna take the state? We need it to turn RED
I think we are getting the vote out well, don’t know if “they” are or not. All depends on that.
I’ve read reports from the hinterland that gun-clingers are turning out 1000% (ten times or more) compared to 2004.
Election Day Morning Headline from a Longtime GretaWire Blogger
by Greta Van Susteren
“Obama: Tax Coal Plants - Says his plans ‘will bankrupt’ power plants that burn coal”
This is the headline in the morning edition of the Wheeling West Virginia newspaper. If you think the people of West Virginia, Kentucky and Southwestern Pennsylvania did not pick up on Obama’s attack on the coal industry. Checkout the headline. If it were any further above the fold it would have been in yesterday’s paper…

The coal story struck deep and may carry PA.
AWESOME. We need to carry PA, Ohio and Florida are looking good, now we just have to win PA and McCain can WIN this election
Anyone have the URL to the radio guy in Penn? I want to log on..
Today would be a perfect day to release the whitey tape.
Today is a perfect day as it is, because we are winning this election!
How come we dont have an election day thread, the exist polls will be coming in soon and there is not day thread on the election why not???
No-one will pay attention to the exit polls. And these are all election threads - we are winning!
Anecdotal information and rumor from people on the ground and people they know - found in the comments at Hillbuzz - in case anyone’s interested - take it however you want, I guess. I myself love this stuff because it keeps me pumped up for a McCain victory tonight!
Here’s some more:
The dow being up 300 today is good for McCain in another, more important way. Whenever McCain moved up in polls the dow went up, whenever Obama moved up the dow went down. The market is an all-knowing, all-seeing entity. The market is happy today!
OMG I hope that’s true. Please God let that be true
Obama hates gays. Wouldn’t let anyone photograph him with Newsome. That’s pretty anti-gay.
Part of an article I have archived:
I’ve heard from sources in PA that Obama workers are calling people begging them to come in to volunteer. The reason? Many of those who were scheduled didn’t show up.
Two more comments:
That dem turnout is lower than expected is good news but ponder this - the PUMA part of that turnout is no doubt high!
Historically, more republicans than democrats vote after 5pm!
My Mom, sister, and Me all registered Dems all voted for John McCain, we just gotta win PA and Ohio, if we can win those two states it’s gonna be a landslide FOR McCain
Via hotline on call:

You have Michigan in there twice.
Lol that’s because MI is twice special!
Would be so sweet if McCain took MI!
I’m out here in WA, hoping it breaks tradition & goes red as well
I dunno about Michigan. Everyone gave up on us here even Oblahblah isn’t putting a whole lot of time in. I can’t even look at my neighbor since he decided to let me in on the fact that, although he has been a lifetime Republican, he’s voting for CHANGE. He’s the very guy that will be affected by the redistribution of wealth, but he says he needs change. My son says all the kids at school are wearing O shirts and telling kids who dare to admit that their parent’s aren’t supporters that they’re racists.
PA is PUMAtized
http://edgeoforever.wordpress.com/2008/11/04/pa-is-pumatized/
Woo Hoo! BTW - I LOVE Not Your Sweetie - don’t really comment, but read it every day - great PUMA site!
I read your post earlier and was so touched. I have a dear friend who lives in CA after moving from Chicago a couple of years ago with his patner of 15 years. On Friday, they did what I called a shot gun wedding in case the prop passed. We had been planning for months for a big A party. There is no reason for the government to involve themselves in the lives of two people who love each others.
If we can win PA and Ohio, WOW just WOW, I just want to see the bottom of the TV Screen saying “John McCain is our 44th President, and Sarah Palin is our 47th Vice President” that would make my day and night and well year
Yes, and as much as it will fill me with pride to see John McCain standing behind the podium with the REAL presidential seal, nothing will beat the sight of Sarah Palin stepping up to the gavel as presiding officer of the U.S. Senate!
I like to visualize both of them being sworn in and then at the Inaugural Ball that night.
From Marc Ambinder - The Atlantic:
Don’t be silly. The letter objected to Obama being portrayed as a supporter of Prop 8, which, as you acknowledge in your post, he is not. So there is nothing improper in the letter. It doesn’t say he supports same sex marriage at all; the fact that you’re making a big deal out of this just shows how narrow your blinders are when it comes to Obama. Don’t blame the No on 8 people for the problems you have with Obama; all they’re doing here is reacting appropriately to a deceptive advertising campaign.
Let’s see - do you understand the concept of “fine edge?” Or PANDERING?? The very clear implication from the letter is that Obama isn’t opposed to same sex marriage. He most definitely is, and has made that clear. He is PANDERING to CA by saying, “oh, no - even though I am against it, I don’t think they should change it now” crapola. And, if you had bothered to look at the link to the NY Times article, it makes it quite clear that BECAUSE of Obama, Prop 8 could very well pass.
In terms of blinders, before you worry abt the speck in my eye, take out the log in yours (to paraphrase Matt. 7:1-5).
Thanks for sharing the updates from the ground.
I just spoke to my sister who lives in VA…she’s a democrat who voted for McCain. She said an exit pollster approached her about an interview. The pollster was initally interested when she said that she was democrat. When my sister told the pollster that she voted for McCain - the pollster became uninterested.
that explains the illogical numbers from the exit polls.
Yeah, first time voters going heavily for Obama. HOWEVER, that’s only 10% of the vote in Indiana. Totally overwhelmed by 30% of White Males voting for McCain with wide margin. Haven’t heard about White Women…guess we’re not too important today. Tomorrow we’ll be all the rage if we manage to be the deciding factors…all of us are racist of course.
White Males going for McCain in VA and OHio!!
Only one person in my neighborhood needed a ride to the polling place. No lines and she was in and out in less than 10 minutes…I had called the RNC recommendations to her on the phone.
Exit poll person…1 young student. She was taking a lot of time with another student who had come out. She must have missed at least 4 or 5 people who just walked by.
Everyone behaves as if California doesn’t exist. What a wild ride it would be if we went Red.
obamabots are the reason why I voted ‘yes on 8′.
Amy,
Three “no on 8″ votes just cast from my house.
We know Oblahblah is a liar. Why would he change now, it’s worked so well for him.
BTW, no matter how eight goes, IMO, people are now far far more accepting of the right of gay people to marry, most of the younger people (not of my generation) seem to think it’s INSANE gay people are discriminated against, legally.
Discrimination is wrong.
Fight the good fight, every time, a little more progress is made…
