Who Gets To Vote?

Here’s the story: John McCain filed a lawsuit in VA at this late date for a reason you are not going to believe. It turns out that the absentee ballots required by military personnel serving abroad were sent out LATE, thus nullifying their votes. I say again: our military personnel from VA are NOT GOING TO GET TO VOTE because of massive errors in 3 counties (Arlington, Chesterfield, and Fauquier), as well as in the cities of Virginia Beach and Richmond. It seems that it wasn’t until late September befoer they even received their absentee ballot forms. How did that happen? I guess that’s what Senator McCain wants to know, too:
The suit filed by Mr. McCain’s campaign against elections officials states Mr. McCain could lose votes from military members overseas who support the Vietnam War hero.
“There are many military service members and overseas voters who support Senator John McCain for president in the upcoming election and whose right to vote will be denied without relief from this court,” stated the complaint, also filed in U.S. District Court in Richmond.
The complaint states some Virginia localities did not send absentee ballots to overseas voters at least 45 days before the election, as recommended in 2004 by a congressionally created commission.
Wow. That is just a tad problematic, don’t you think? It is 2008 - surely 4 years is sufficient lead time to make sure that everything is squared away in order to fulfill this recommendation. Just sayin’.
This lawsuit was sparked by one case - see? Making your voice heard DOES matter! Hopefully, anyway. THe article continues:
The complaint cites the specific case of a Marine stationed in Iraq who did not receive his absentee ballot from Arlington County until Oct. 29. It asks that the court order absentee ballots for federal offices sent by Nov. 4 from qualified voters and received by Nov. 14 in the state to be counted.
“The McCain-Palin campaign believes without exception that the servicemen and women on the front line protecting our freedoms deserve every opportunity to make sure their vote counts,” McCain spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said.
It was not clear last night when the suit would be heard in court.
“Of course we want to make sure that all the absentee ballots that are coming in from overseas are counted,” Miss Skinner said. “We’ll comply with whatever order the judge gives on that.”
I dunno - I don’t think 10 days is all that long to wait, all things considered, do you? Whether one agrees with the Iraq War (I don’t), the reality is that these people are putting their lives on the line, their lives at home on hold, making sacrifices the enormity of which many of us cannot fathom, including, sadly, the ultimate sacrifice for some. I think the least we can do is allow them to VOTE. THis goes for ALL of our military serving abroad, whether it be Iraq, or Afghanistan, or Germany - wherever it is, our citizens deserve to execute their right in a democracy to cast their vote. Anything less is unacceptable, especially when they are in harm’s way. And especially when people like these two get to vote unimpeded:
Isn’t it weird seeing people go up and hug them? Like they are just anybody else in the neighborhood, not two unrepentant domestic terrorists who want to teach their children?? I wonder - was it from them that Obama learned to be a con man? Ahem.
So, yeah - I don’t think 10 days is too much to ask to allow late absentee ballots from our military, through no fault of their own, to come back in, do you?

I don’t think this lawsuit is made with the intent to change any results but rather to honor soldiers’ votes by counting them.

Am I the only one who finds it rather dubious that the Middle East countries cut the price of oil in half just in time to take gas prices as an issue away from McCain. I suspect that we will see gas rapidly rise to $4.00+ per gallon again now that the election is over.

I live in the state of VA, under a governor who has been all Obama all the time for the last 2 years. In fact, I didn’t realize until you printed this, but I live in one of the counties that is named!
Last I heard yesterday, a judge said to preserve the ballots and he would take this up after studying it. There is no excuse if Kaine could rush the restoration of rights through for the felons, he could surely get the ballots to the soldiers.

For the first time I am incredibly disappointed in America. I am disappointed that apparently Americans fell for the hopey dopey and RUINED this country for all of us.

Who gets to vote??? Well let’s see- I was an election oficial yesterday and it was very sad and very scary. We had to call the courthouse to have more voter assistance forms delivered as we had so many people come in who could not read and required assistance to complete their ballots, we had numerous mentally challenged individuals who also could not complete their ballots unassisted. I lost count of the number of people who could not read but were carrying envelopes (hmmm wonder what was IN the envelopes?)with Obama hand printed on them. These people would actually show these pieces of paper to the election workers and say “I have to vote for this one.”
To paraphrase Obama’s wife ” For the first time in my adult life, I am ashamed of my country.” We, the people, have allowed the most powerful office in the world to be bought and sold.
God help us all!
I am shocked to learn that the military ballots were not included in the final count. That says a lot about Gov. Kaine. I hope the people of VA hear it loud and clear. Felons get their votes counted, but not the military. Wow.
Nice going Kaine. At least it sets up an issue for the next Virginia governor’s race.

Rant away dear Lady. I personally am earning my user name today! Our last sad hope seems to be that one of the lawsuits challenging Obama’s eligibility will get legs now that damage can be proven! Remember Bergs case was dismissed on grounds that he could not prove damage because up to that point, it was only the Primary vote affected, and the Primaries are only an in party issue and supposedly have no tangible effect on the GE.

You can articulate so much better the feelings we all have. I tossed and turned all night too. No sleep- no peace of mind. Waiting for that generated crisis that Biden told us all about. I feel like ranting but just don’t have the energy- I guess its disbelief.

The teacher decides to have an a class presidential election. Each candidate will have 3 minutes to get up in front of the class and present their case as to why he/she should get elected.
Each student got up one-by-one and made small promises. Then, one of the girls got up. She didn’t seem particularly cared for. The teacher had never met either parent. All she said was, “if I’m elected - free ice cream for everybody.”
The class went wild.
When questioned, she didn’t have any plan to get the ice cream nor did she have any money to pay for it.
The class didn’t care. All they heard was “free ice cream” —- she won by a landslide.
Every qualified American citizen who wishes to vote has an absolute right to have his or her vote timely counted. With modern technology this should pose no problem. Denying Americans in uniform one of the basic American rights that they’re defending is inexcusable and totally unacceptable.
