A Republican Shows More Leadership on Gay Rights than Barack Obama

I think it is most ironic that the Republican Governor of California said the following:

Schwarzenegger tells backers of gay marriage: Don’t give up
The governor expresses hope that Proposition 8 would be overturned as protesters continued to march outside churches across California.

This story was filed today by Michael Rothfeld and Tony Barboza of none other than the Los Angeles Times.

Curiouser and curiouser that the ‘Governator,’ Arnold Schwarzenegger, you know, the guy who was campaigning in Ohio for his Republican buddy, Senator John McCain, would be the one to tell GLBT constituents to not give up:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday expressed hope that the California Supreme Court would overturn Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage. He also predicted that the 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who have already wed would not see their marriages nullified by the initiative.

“It’s unfortunate, obviously, but it’s not the end,” Schwarzenegger said in an interview Sunday on CNN. “I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area.”

With his favorable comments toward gay marriage, the governor’s thinking appears to have evolved on the issue.

Wow. It is unfortunate that our President Elect, Barack Obama has not “evolved on the issue,” but instead is trying to have it both ways. He said he was against Prop. 8 but also that he is against gay marriage. How do you do that exactly? Sort of like his original position about the AIG bailout – he’s for it and against it. Confusing.

The numbers proved that Obama’s AA and Latino voters certainly helped in the passage of Prop 8. Do we really believe if Obama had the guts to come out and unequivocally say that Prop 8 was wrong, period, Californians would have seen the same result?

Please see American Girl in Italy’s excellent article on the subject, African Americans Have Suffered at the Hand of Racism and Bigotry and Are in Turn Bigots.

How unfortunate that along with women getting kicked in the teeth this year, GLBT voters did as well, by a candidate who wanted to have his cake and eat it, too.

According to ABC News, 11/2/08, Obama Says He Is Against Same-Sex Marriage But Also Against Ending Its Practice In Calif.

Obama told MTV he believes marriage is “between a man and a woman” and that he is “not in favor of gay marriage.”

So ABC News reporters quoted Obama on what they referred to as his “nuanced position” on gay marriage.

Nuanced – is that something like horse hooey? A distant cousin to Joe Bidens’ “rhetorical flourishes?”

At the same time, Obama reiterated his opposition to Proposition 8, the California ballot measure which would eliminate a right to same-sex marriage that the state’s Supreme Court recently recognized.

“I’ve stated my opposition to this. I think it’s unnecessary,” Obama told MTV. “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage. But when you start playing around with constitutions, just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that’s not what America’s about.”

So wait a minute – by sending such a ridiculous mixed message to his supporters, what did he think they would do? If he really had any guts, he would have unequivocally said he opposed Prop 8 and not temper it with this kind of religious, moralistic caveat.

Contrast this with Governor Schwarzenegger:

Schwarzenegger publicly opposed Proposition 8, which amends the state Constitution to declare that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

On Sunday, he urged backers of gay marriage to follow the lesson he learned as a bodybuilder trying to lift weights that were too heavy for him at first. “I learned that you should never ever give up. . . . They should never give up. They should be on it and on it until they get it done.”

The governor’s position on the fate of the existing same-sex marriages aligns him with California Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown, who has said he believes that the state Supreme Court will uphold the existing marriages as valid.

The 14-word constitutional amendment does not state explicitly that it would nullify same-sex marriages performed before the Nov. 4 election, although proponents say it will. Legal experts differ on this point.

Schwarzenegger’s comments came as protesters took to the streets for a fifth day in a row, sometimes marching to Catholic and Mormon churches that supported passage of the ballot measure.

For all I know, Schwarzenegger is playing politics too, but he is a Republican. Gay rights are not supposed to be top on the Republican agenda. Remember? I thought Democrats were supposed to lead the charge on that one. Not so much, I guess.

Does anyone think if it were Senator Hillary Clinton, she would be doing a two-step on this one. She has always marched in the gay pride parade – and stands up very publicly for gay rights. Oh, what could have been. Sigh.

Some churches, to be sure, assailed Proposition 8 as discriminatory.

“We will continue to bless same-sex unions here until we can legally celebrate same-sex unions again,” the Rev. Ed Bacon told 1,000 congregants during Sunday services at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, which has blessed same-sex unions for 16 years.

After the service, Bacon and other clergy members held a news conference on the church steps. They were surrounded by gay and lesbian couples, some standing with young children.

“I know these couples. I know their relationships,” Bacon said, addressing a phalanx of television cameras. “They should be celebrated, rather than disparaged. . . . In the eyes of God, these people are married.”

I wonder how Mrs. Governator, Maria Schriver, she of the Kennedy family progressives, die hard Democrat and die hard Obama supporter squares Obama being so wishy washy on this issue. I also wonder how Mrs. Governator reconciles that Barack Obama spent valuable time and money courting evangelicals, campaigning down south with the likes of Donnie McClurkin, an “ex-gay man reformed through prayer.”

Many of Obama supporters are very happy to declare that the ends justifies the means when they turn a blind eye to any of his primary and election shenanigans. I wonder how his GLBT supporters likewise think his historic election justifies him courting groups that wish to deprive them of their rights.

I sincerely hope that Prop. 8 will be repealed. How interesting that a Republican Governor is willing to stand up and make a public statement about GLBT rights that is more progressive than our “progressive” Democratic President Elect.

Once the Senate amends the rule that only native-born Americans can qualify for the presidency, it will benefit the likes of Gov. Jennifer Granholm and yes, the Ahnold. Once that happens, it would be interesting to watch the “evolution” of the Kennedy clans support for Obama.

You can’t tell me for a second that either Obama or Bush love this country more that Arnold. That man loves this country just like he was born here. I am sure he loves his native Austria as well but I know for a fact he thinks we have the greatest country in the world. Plus, he isn’t afraid of doing the right thing. He’d be a far superior President than either of the the current dips.

Actually you would have to amend the US Constitution. All states would have a vote.

It’s not simply a “rule” you can overturn. It’s the law of the land.

John,
We cant jump to conclusions as to why Gov Schwarzenegger opposes Prop 8.

One reason why Gov Scwarzenegger is against Prop 8 is because of the negative economic impact this will have on California’s economy.

Schwarzenegger has so grossly handled the state budget and he is in way over his head.

He was counting on the added revenue to the state if /when California legalized gay marriage.

Budget analysts performed economic impacts on the state if prop 8 passes and when Gov S saw this-he jumped on the bandwagon.

I will try to locate those articles which indicate exactly how much California will benefit economically from the legalization of gay marriage.

Also,
Never…ever…forget for one moment- Governor Schwarzenegger has his eye on the prize-US presidency. His opposition to Prop 8 will win him the support of the Gay & Lesbian vote in the future-nationwide.

As far as Barack Obama holding a nuanced position about gay marriage…

“I’ve stated my opposition to this. I think it’s unnecessary,” Obama told MTV. “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage. But when you start playing around with constitutions, just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that’s not what America’s about.”

P L E A S E-

‘playing around with the constition’…he is concerned about playing around with the Constition???

If so Mr Barack Obama- please explain to us your FISA vote, your unwillingness to consider impeachment for Bush administration members, your refusal to supply the public with your birth certificate (ordering Hawaii officials to seal your birth records)and ordering your alma maters not to release ANY info about your academic accomplishments

And…this is…I am afraid…just the beginning of the destruction of our Constitution.

Support for the GLBT community will never put a presidential candidate over the top. We don’t have a big enough voting block. However, I don’t think standing up for the rights of GLBT will hurt a candidate. Obama could have easily won this election while simultaneously sticking up for both women and the GLBT community. He did neither. Why? He was courting the neo-con voter, young people and AA’s. All of whom have anti-GLBT tendencies. The truth is that he could have came out as gay during this election and those 3 groups would have backed him anyway. I think he would have pushed the issue (remember the rally in the south where they booed him for attempting to defending gays) but he is not a natural leader and he is a coward.

BTW, I would go even further, because when I read this title, I thought that it was going to be about Sarah Palin, and how she vetoed that bill in Alaska that would’ve denied same-sex couples their benefits.

SARAH PALIN. Seen by the MSM and Obamatrons as the Conservative Antichrist.

Thy shalt not judge for what judgement thy judge thy wilt be judged. Sarah Palin has her own opinion- or are we all in a socialist country that we must have the same mind? My brother is gay, and do I have to give up my religious ways because of it?

If the Republicans can find a way to neutralize the religious right’s domination of their party — they might turn into Teddy Roosevelt Republicans.

Palin and the Governator seem to be staking out the middle ground — and that is where most Americans are. Those of us in the middle have a lot more in common with each other than with the radical of either the left or the right.

Comment by gregoryp | 2008-11-11 10:48:14

I think the parties may be in the process of flipping back to what they were before the 60’s.

I also think that there is nothing inherently antagonistic between being a Christian and supporting the rights of others. Jesus never condemned homosexuality. Jesus’ message was all about love, compassion, forgiveness and helping the less fortunate. Jesus’ message was not the same as Moses message. If they want to follow Mosaic law they should become Jewish and quit pretending that they are Christians. Alas, I’ve never heard of Israel punishing homosexuals with death.

Now there are some things that right wing Christians believe that I can’t figure out how they rationalize them as being part of the doctrine. Things like supporting capital punishment, being greedy, being dishonest, infusing their religion with the government, hating others who are different or just hating anybody, etc.

Dude … we Republicans think that we ARE the center of politics. Millions of Obama supporters and Democrats in California voted for Prop. 8. It passed. Get over it. It represents the mainstream of American thinking on this subject. My proof is that Florida and uh … I think Nebraska also did so. Same sex marriage will die because the vast majority of Americans see it for what it is: a sick joke, invented by Lefties with goo-goo eyes for everything the Europeans do. Marriage is almost non-existent in Europe precisely because the Euro-Left made it the law throughout Europe. NOBODY gets married in France anymore because the institution has been rendered a meaningless, rotting, corpse, without appeal for anyone gay or straight. Europe’s birth rate is also in a nose dive and has been for years. Any wonder why???? The Left wants to do this to America and its institutions: to render them all a meaningless farce. Wake the hell up before we have no more liberties in this country. We might make some small changes in contract law that would address some of the concerns of homosexuals and lesbians.

great post. gay people are constantly scrutinized and criticized for being “immoral” but our country won’t give them the rights given to others where they can have families and children. That’s an oxymoron. These far right so called christians need to look in their own backyards, there is plenty they need to worry about.

I have much more respect for Schwarzenger now. Don’t know much else about him though. The fact that Palin supports gay rights as well energizes my support for her even more. She doesn’t foist her personal views on others.

There is hope to revive the core of our country if we can get through the next 2 years at least and get more honest, decent people in Congress. The economy is in terrible shape right now and not getting any better.

Wise words from Schwartzenegger.

They should never give up. They should be on it and on it until they get it done.”

Soertoro/Obama’s waffling on this issue is a preview of things to come for all issues and whatever he believes “marriage” to be is not relevant; although he plagiarized George W. Bush’s words “between a man and a woman” and copied the Bush position which gives credence to our believe that Obama was chosen because Obama = Bush.

For any marriage to be legal, the contract has to be registered with a state, a license issued by the state, and a fee paid at the time of registration. If it is a religious ceremony between consenting adults performed in a church and/or by their minister it’s none of the State’s business because that falls within the realm of separation of Church and State. And without that registration with the state, even marriage “between a man and a woman” isn’t legal. Polygamists have use this method for years to avoid bigamy charges by having only one “wife” registered with the state although the church recognized other “wives” married in the Church.

Legally and constitutionally, this is a tempest in a teapot, much ado about nothing, but it certainly does distract the People from the waffle-elect’s being a post turtle. We should take the California governor’s advice and stay on Soertoro/Obama until we get the job done.

This article appeared in the LA Times but I heard the writer speaking on NPR and was shocked. Shocked at how callously she dismissed gay civil rights by comparing that to the struggle of blacks. She pretty much said that it was gay white men’s fault. We had not been there for the black struggle and she and Obama’s AA supporters could care less about gay rights as they worked all year to register enough blacks to put a black man in the White House.
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-cannick8-2008nov08,0,3669070.story
What she overlooks is that Obama was not elected just by black people. It took a coalition. She is an angry woman and is a perfect example of how Obama never will be anywhere near what Martin Luther King’s Dream was about.

this is a comment on a second article she wrote about the issue a few days after and posted on her web site

Comment by C.S. | 2008-11-11 08:00:13

She’s also delusional. With the black population no more than 15% (men, women and children) of the total population of 300,000,000 she couldn’t register enough blacks to elect a black candidate unless they voted several times or other minorities and majorities were kept from voting. (Black Panthers with clubs guarding the polls?) The math just doesn’t add up and “media” propaganda can’t be trusted to give accurate figures because they ignored the primary results that gave the nomination to Senator Clinton.

Comment by wodiej | 2008-11-11 08:10:37

this is yet another example that blacks are not for equal rights for all, just for them. That is not equal rights. They seem to have an underlying, pervasive emotional attachment to feeling inferior. This is shown by their anger and bitterness. If their so called black leaders have been so great, why are they still angry and bitter after decades? Change comes from the inside not the outside. Although there will always be people who judge others by the color of their skin, the majority of this comes from blacks themselves. They don’t want to be recognized by this difference yet they constantly bring attention to it. They are the ones that need to change, not the rest of the world. They have all of the same opportunities, often more and sometimes undeserved, as everyone else. If their life and world is not what they want, they have no one to blame but themselves.

I don’t have the time or energy to be concerned about people who want to cry, whine, bitch, complain and play victim.

Comment by Tuppence411 | 2008-11-11 08:47:56

I’ve seen this attitude before, here in Massachusetts during our own gay marriage debate.
It’s a pervasive attitude that the terms civil rights, discrimination, etc… only apply to the African American struggle for equality. They own the words and they own the emotions that are associated with them. Any other groups use of the words amount to heresy. Black civic and religious leaders, as well as opinion shapers, cement that attitude.

the AA/hispanic opposition to gay rights has been going on for a long time. they want everyone else to treat them as equal (or superior), but they refuse to the same for others.
the “tactic” was quite clearly employed by obama and the democratic party when they made the calculation to support the rights and dignity of racial minorities OVER that of gays and women.

in 2005, mark leno, a state assemblyman introduced a bill regarding gay marriage that was passed in the senate

arnie VETOED the bill…..

http://articles.latimes.com/2005/sep/08/local/me-marriage8
“Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

“The governor believes the matter should be determined not by legislative action – which would be unconstitutional – but by court decision or another vote of the people of our state,” the statement said. “We cannot have a system where the people vote and the Legislature derails that vote.”

so, mr terminator rose to the occasion

arnie is a COWARD. now he plays politics because many dems want to run against him. see feinstein

well the good news regarding 8 is that 43 dem legislators asked the court today to ban the initiative/invalidate.

no REPUBLICAN signed it …. so let them die in peace. and lets, stop praising them.

i know that is just a jab at obama, but is becoming redundant. let’s give him 100 days ….like may 1, (what a great day) ….to see what he does/doesn’t do.

yes, i know, we know too much about him. but let’s see which obama shows up as president and which cords r pulled if he is just the puppet

actually, arnie is the big flip-flopper in this case. he HAD the bill in front of him. obama had just interviews and opinions.

I certainly don’t think i am some kind of anomaly in having to deal with having gay people in my family. But i can also say, that after the dust settled, every one was glad for the honesty of my brother finally coming out. Why? Because we love him, and every one was noticing that gap in our ability to offer him ordinary family support because there was that lie of omission always in the way. It was cutting into him every moment because he felt that he would be disowned by us for telling the truth. Imagine that, feeling like you are some how doing wrong by not telling the truth to your own family?

There are a couple of things here. The Bible never condemns people for love. For abuse of their fellows, that is obvious, & that is what i believe the Old Testament term of sodomy is referring to. It is not a term designed to condemn people who love each other, it was specifying a particular group of abusers of their fellow human being.

That is just my opinion, but i wanted to be able to say that for a long time. TY NQ for allowing me the opportunity.

Ani- This comment of mine has nothing to do with my views. But, the gays had this coming. First, they bashed Sarah Palin constantly because she was for traditional marriage. Even the Ellen Show was ranting against this woman. You can’t judge others and except the Lord to reward you. Gays were calling the poor lady names and then actually think that they are not listened by some higher source? Ellen was ranting on her show about Sarah not being for gay marriage but she failed to tell her audience that Obama was against it and Biden. NO! She made it a point to tell everybody that Sarah did- hey…what about Hillary? So, if now the gays are not getting the majority of the people’s “yes” to marriage- maybe they ought to examine the “thy shalt not judge for what judgement thy judge they wilt be judge” from the very Big source that create all all of us. Two gay guys hang a dummy hanging in a noose around her neck, did the gays come out and demanded this dummy to come down? Did the gays call Ellen’s show and tell her that it was unfair and that the rest of the democrat party was against gay? No. So, this soldier does feel one bit of pity for the decision. There is an old saying” what goes around comes around again.”

Palin said it best during the campaign its your choice, she has gay friends and she respect their choice, just like your choice to have an abortion or not.

As usual when people want a certain candidate they overlook all that they are hearing or seeing because their candidates has to win so they don’t care, its only when the election is over and things have a way of not falling in place as they hoped that their eyes become open and they see what a mess they have made.

I do believe that McCain and his camp found that on the onset Palin became an instant hit, she was drawing massive crowds and they felt that this was not good for McCain, his message was being lost and that he should of been the star as he was the top of the ticket.

The McCain camp then went on the mission to keep Sarah out of the media, there were time when she was on stage and McCain kept standing there by her side, you even had him doing interviews with her, not because she was bad but because they wanted the public to focus on him, they just changed too much about Sarah, they had a great candidate but they messed it up all because they wanted to show off McCain, and Sarah was starting to make him look dull in the eyes of the public.

Comment by SJ | 2008-11-11 13:15:27

I have no idea if its genetic or not, I really don’t care honestly. Some called themselves Gay and choose a same sex partner it is a choice, its a choice to come out in the open or not, its a choice to live your life with someone of the same sex or not, or go about it without anyone knowing…its a CHOICE!

So don’t tell me its not a choice, life is full of individual choices and you make them accordingly to how you feel you want to live.

Palin in her remarks was saying just that its a choice that some of her best friends made, she has not given up on them but its their choice, not her’s so she is not going to critique them in anyway. Simple put I guess what she was saying is to each his own, it’s just sad that some did not understand that.

Palin doesn’t support gay rights. Some of you are crazy on that! She’s a right-wing Bible nut.

Obama was a spineless worm on Prop 8. He didn’t want to alientate any of those African-Americans in CA (who voted 70% in favor of the ban) or anywhere else (like in FL where a whopping 63% of the general population supported State-sanctioned homophobia).

The rampid homophobia in the African-American communtiy needs to be “brought out of the closet.” So many won’t touch it because 1- it’s seen as a gay issue and 2- it dares criticize African-Americans.

Sure, many whites are homophobic too (as well as racist), but do the numbers add up to 70-30%. Methinks not!

Comment by Tuppence411 | 2008-11-11 09:27:32

Gregory- I challange you to find one example where Sarah Palin has legislated from her religious beliefs. You can’t, because she never has.

And as far the AA community vote on Prop 8, you need to look deeper, not just paint with a broad brush of “homophobia”. There are many factors, including their reluctance to cede one inch on their perceived monopoly of “civil rights”. There is also the black religious community misplaced fear that gay marriage will further undermine the already struggling black nuclear family. Lots of factors in play.

Comment by BJ | 2008-11-11 09:39:31

lots of factors.. like the millions and millions the mormon and catholic church spent in campaigning against it-

You f*cking LIAR.

Read this LIAR. She has already appeared on stage with dozens of people who are pro-choice.

http://weeklystandard.com/Weblogs/TWSFP/TWSFPView.asp#9531

The day of the third debate, Palin refused to go onstage with New Hampshire GOP Sen. John Sununu and Jeb Bradley, a New Hampshire congressman running for the Senate, because they were pro-choice and because Bradley opposed drilling in Alaska.

The McCain campaign ordered her onstage at the next campaign stop, but she refused to acknowledge the two Republican candidates standing behind her.

So according to the hatchet man/woman who talked to Newsweek, Palin is such an ideologue about drilling in ANWR that she won’t stand next to Bradley, even though John McCain has the exact same position?

And Palin is such an ideologue that she won’t appear with pro-choice politicians, even though she attended events with pro-choice Clinton donor Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild?

And we’re really supposed to believe that Palin is so dumb she doesn’t know Africa is a continent, but she knew about the voting records of John Sununu and Jeb Bradley in the first place?

Hmmm. I guess that might be remotely possible if it weren’t for the fact that John Sununu has a 100 percent pro-life rating from the National Right to Life Committee.

Glad to see that whoever leaked this story is too dumb to come up with a plausible smear. And kudos to Newsweek for dumping this whopper without bothering to check if Sununu is in fact pro-abortion.
Oh, and by the way, Jeb Bradley isn’t running for U.S. Senate, as Newsweek reports. Perhaps they might want to check out Wikipedia before publishing the next batch of Palin smears.

This is patently false. Governor Palin is not close to being a bible nut.

Governor Sarah Palin said in a nationally televised debate with Joe “gird your loins” Biden that she believed in the equality and civil unions. Civil unions confer equal rights. But no one on either side of the ticket supported same-sex marriage. But they support equal rights.

And believe it or not, not all gays support same sex marriage.

Reasonable people can disagree without going militant. What is the point in having elections if when you don’t get the result you want you go militant.

Wrong, gregory. Her policies in Alaska reveal quite the opposite is the truth. You have obviously been buying into the media smear stories, 90% which were pure baloney on her.

Wrong about Obama, too. He backed opponents of Prop. 8.

Comment by Betty Lou | 2008-11-11 11:35:09

A robo call and an “I heard” from Clinton aren’t enough, this is an issue that demands courageous leadership, and Arnold is, at the very least, like Mayor Gavin, and Dianne Feinstein, advocating against the discrimination.

So, I give them their due.

In all honesty, and I could be wrong, Obama strikes me as highly homophobic, a silly fear if I ever did see one.

Comment by Rob G in Chicago | 2008-11-11 14:36:44

AnninCA:

I believe that Obama sent mixed messages on Prop 8 when he said that he was against Prop 8 but he was against gay marriage. He was, once again, firmly on both sides of an issue.

Comment by John House | 2008-11-11 11:07:49

Yet, that right-wing Bible nut vetoed legislation that would’ve barred same-sex couples from getting benefits in Alaska because–DUN DUN DUN–after consulting her attorney general on it, she found that signing the law would go against her peoples’ constitutional rights.

You are a true ass, along with BJ.

Comment by gregoryp | 2008-11-11 11:21:19

AA’s were going to vote for Obama regardless of what he said or did. They didn’t care about his positions. Not one damned bit either. Identity politics all the way. More likely, Obama really does have homophobic tendencies. Maybe he is a self-hating gay. Maybe he really is an intolerant religious bigot. The only group of people that Obama may have been concerned with is the religious right. Why would he even be concerned with them?

Comment by Rob G in Chicago | 2008-11-11 14:04:17

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-11-11 10:21:38

One correction, Ani. There were ads running saying that Obama did not support this proposition and that it was discrimination. I also received robocalls from Bill Clinton and others saying that Obama did not support Prop. 8.

So it was out there on his stance.

Comment by gregoryp | 2008-11-11 11:33:34

Obama was just being hypocritical. He said he was against the proposition because it wasn’t needed. He campaigned with known gay bashers and supporters of Prop 8. He never said he thought that Prop 8 was wrong on its merits. I am sure in the minds of his supporters he was giving a tacit approval of Prop 8. If he would have strongly came out and condemned the proposition and strongly advocated for gay rights none of this would be an issue. His followers think the guy is the messiah. They would have voted whatever way he wanted. He was purposely ambiguous.

Comment by Ani | 2008-11-11 12:50:13

No correction required — the article says he “says” he was opposed to prop 8 — but then he publicly came out and said he was opposed to gay marriage.

You cannot have it both ways! I’m not sure you actually read what I wrote.

I also wonder how Mrs. Governator reconciles that Barack Obama spent valuable time and money courting evangelicals, campaigning down south with the likes of Donnie McClurkin, an “ex-gay man reformed through prayer.””

The Church even make helped make the mistake. Because Obots had now problem “getting in your face, argue with them” or “say anything “for The One, They didn’t realized how little our voting public are not educated and unaware of the facts. When they instructed voters to vote for the Pro Life candidate, so many people THOUGHT that meant O-shit. There was such a strong effort to lie to anyone, what ever would make them vote for O-shit.

So AA’s turned out massively for yes on Obama and yes on 8. The No on 8 people are protesting Mormons and otrher churches but maybe should be protesting Obama.

Comment by Linda | 2008-11-11 10:38:15

Oh, that’s the truth. When I lived in Cinci in 2004 and was canvassing, I came to AA voters who were just against the entire Democratic ticket on “values”. And there was a proposition to repeal a Bill that was Anti Hate crime for Gays that they were insistant on voting against. It was just so amazing.

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-11-11 11:04:43

To me, it looks like the Governator is getting a lot of “re-writes” to HIS official transcripts (much like the Obama).
As I recall, Ah-nuld vetoed a piece of legislation (duly passed by BOTH houses of the California Legislature) which was designed to LEGALLY provide for same-sex marriages. Ah-nuld, at the time, offered this reason for his veto: “I believe the people should have the right to vote on this issue.” (I admit to paraphrasing his exact words, but the preceding provides the correct sentiment.)
Now, after allowing the “good people” of California the opportunity to vote–AS HE DEMANDED IN HIS VETO–Ah-nuld’s afraid of looking like a bad guy (and if people actually remembered his veto, instead of flitting from one issue to another, they’d hold the fucking asshole responsible), so he changes tack and he now wants/hopes that Prop 8 will be overturned.

Comment by Objective Analysis | 2008-11-11 11:11:24

I am black and I am glad that CA blacks voted 70-30 to oppose Gay Marriage and create the Amendment.

As a lawyer, most proponents of Gay marriage advocate Loving v. VA as proof that gays are equal in rights to blacks. That is not true.

First, the case only dealth with INTERRACIAL marriage being illegal. Whites could marry whites. Blacks could marry blacks. Interracials could not marry and that was illegal under the equal protection of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Const.

Second, the level of scrutiny by the courts is different. Strict scrutiny which is the highest level of court review is for race, ethnicity, and natural origin. Intermediate review (2nd level of review by courts) is on gender. The last review is rational basis. Homosexuality (or gay marriage) is reviewed at the lowest level called rational basis which has happened for a lifetime.

Homosexuality is not equivalent to civil rights for blacks what so ever. It is more equivalent to beastiality (where humans have sex with animals) and we consider that illegal as well if done in the public.

Gays have rights and are protected. Gay marriage is a guise for gays to have christians and people of faith to deny their bible and their god. WE WILL NOT DO THAT.

I got two words for you: SODOM, GOMORRAH. I am not going to turn into a pillar of salt because of your desire to validate wickedness to our children and others.

Comment by Betty Lou | 2008-11-11 11:31:08

I disagree, it is a legal issue of discrimination, based on an arbitrary criteria of prejudice, ignorance and fear.

I got two words for you: SODOM, GOMORRAH. I am not going to turn into a pillar of salt because of your desire to validate wickedness to our children and others.

This is a subjective evaluation, based on religious intolerance, your argument stems from fear, not logic and reason, given the US legal code, yours is an unreasonable assumption.

I truly wish the military would take the lead here, and start integrating openly gay men and women into the forces.

We only stay competitive as a nation when we progress.

What a disgraceful post. One of the most disgraceful ever. I really wish there was a God in heaven so that bigots like you could get yours in the end. What baffles me is that so many people mistake their own opinions for God’s opinion. You are mistaking Mosaic law for Christianity. I wonder how many people in this country call themselves Christians yet never bother to learn about Jesus’ teachings. Get this straight: Christians follow Jesus. Jews follow Moses and the other Torah prophets. Islam follows Mohammed. Christians don’t follow Moses or Mohammed. Muslims and Jews don’t follow Jesus. It ain’t to hard to follow even for a lawyer.

What a ridiculous post. We’re all so glad that you finally got your President and now you can’t see your way to understand the civil rights of others who are “minorities.” I guess it’s only “racism” or “hate” if you don’t give AAs what they want. Very sad that you people feel the way you do. It’s NONE of your business what people do in their private lives. NONE. And the fact that you just won a big victory and can’t be generous about others having the same kind of victory is sad.

Objective … I agree with your view on Loving vs VA. But also, consider this: The State of Virginia never said that marriage would suffer harm if interracial couples were allowed to marry in that state. What they argued was that the “integrity of the races” would be threatened. And that, the US Supreme Court replied was NOT a legitimate state interest justifying the law. Virgina never argued that interracial marriage was a threat to the existence of marriage. It argued that “miscegenation” or the mixing of the races would result if interracial marriage was permitted. THAT said the court, is no business of the state. There is no parallel between same-sex marriage and interracial marriage. Never was. Goodbye to same-sex marriage and good riddance.

I’m sorry but I am still steaming. I am a Republican but I support gay marriage and abortion. Sometimes I wonder how people can be so silly in the times we find ourselves in to really care what people do in private. I live in liberal CA and my MIND WAS BLOWN that Prop 8 passed. My gay friends were all panicked, sending emails around all day, asking people for support for the cause. I blindly emailed back not to worry about it. I really thought it would be fine. Then I find out WHO exactly were the largest majority of people to piss and crap on people’s civil rights….so pissed…the AAs and Hispanics. But the most pissed I am…where do the AAs get OFF whining about their rights 24/7 and then they rush out to elect their AA President and shoot down the rights of others? I can’t BELIEVE the hypocrisy. I’m so mad. Ughhh…Funny that out of ALL the people in this race…Arnold and Sarah are the two who have made the more positive statements about gay rights.

I have NO sympathy for the GLBT community on this one. The candidate (Hillary) that would have publicly stood up for them on this one was dissed by them.

Excuses were made for the candidate (Obama) they chose to support no matter his waffling on gay rights and his open campaigning with anti-gay organizations and his refusal to even be seen with GLBT people.

It was Obama supporters that overwhelmingly supported the gay-marriage ban.

Prominent gays, Maddow, Avarosis, and Ellen come to mind, all but worshipped at Obama’s feet.

This might sound “off”, but I am glad it passed.

Only for the reason that it will be challenged in the courts and the more these cases get sent up the circuit, eventually the SCOTUS will rule on it.

Thanks Ani, for spotlighting the hypocrisy.

Comment by Tristan | 2008-11-11 15:09:37

Yes, if Clinton were running for President, she would have supported the gay community in this issue like she always has. But California *did* vote for HRC in the primaries, 52 to 42, so don’t say they deserved this for supporting Obama. They basically just got screwed first and will be quickly followed by a long line of other interest groups that supported the messiah.

Comment by ModDem | 2008-11-11 16:48:07

Prop 8 was a California bill so naturally Arnold has to comment on it. His comment is more for political expediency than anything else - although I do believe he supports gay rights. Obama not speaking about this means nothing. You can’t really jump to a conclusion about this until he says something.
