Irony Meter Goes Off the Scale…*SNAP*!

Every now and then something happens that involves such an elevated level of shamelessness that you’re left shaking your head in wonder and questioning your own sanity. Over the past 8 years many of these moments have involved George W. Bush in some way, with Dick Cheney and other Bush administration minions popping up in unforgettable cameos. Today is one such event. Bush needs to hurry and cram in as many as he can before he’s evicted from his current place of residence.

If someone had told you that a major international organization was going to hold an interfaith conference which would focus on religious tolerance and exploring ways to combat extremism, you’d probably think that was a good thing. If they told you the Saudis would be hosting this grand event, well, not so much. Actually you’d laugh, thinking that was a joke.

But alas it isn’t a joke.

Yes, the UN in all its wisdom has convened this illustrious “dialogue”. In my view no self-respecting nation would send even a local dogcatcher as a representative to such a farce of an event, but I guess protocol dictates that it would be rude not to send someone, even if it means being lectured about open-mindedness by the Saudis of all fucking people. So most nations sent some lackey or low-level sucker to show his or her wretched face, except for the Israelis, who for some reason thought showing up for this absurd and offensive bit of theater would somehow be productive.

OK, so the Israelis sent one current and former distinguished personages. God knows they’ve got their own issues with religious loonies who try to stick their noses where they don’t belong and preside over religious “courts” that make decisions appropriate for the Middle Ages. But the US wouldn’t commit the diplomatic faux pas of taking this idiocy seriously by sending someone seriously high level to attend, right?

Think again. Condoleezza Rice was there to show her love for the Saudi “king”. And not only did George W. Bush, the current American President, attend in all his glory, he gave a little speech. Pull quote:

Freedom is God’s gift to every man, woman, and child — and that freedom includes the right of all people to worship as they see fit. Sixty years ago, members of the United Nations General Assembly acknowledged this truth when we adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration proclaims that everyone has the right to choose or change religions, and the right to worship in private or in public.

Yes, I’d agree freedom is good. Try telling that to the Saudis, whose crimes against humanity and enlightenment are legion.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, the event’s chief sponsor, opened the meeting with a call for greater understanding in the Middle East, saying that religious and cultural differences in the region have “engendered intolerance, causing devastating wars and considerable bloodshed.”

And just to show that someone’s got the lights on over at the Washington Post, here’s an amusing little reminder for the folks following along at home. Bold mine:

The conference provides an opportunity for Saudi Arabia, which prohibits the public practice of non-Islamic faiths, to present a more tolerant image on the world stage. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers in the terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, were Saudis.

Shimon Peres was so overcome by the event that he said this:

“Your majesty, the king of Saudi Arabia, I was listening to your message. I wish that your voice will become the prevailing voice of the whole region, of all people,” he said. “The initiative’s portrayal of our region’s future provides hope to the people and inspires confidence in nations.”

Am I hallucinating?

What world are we living in? It seriously gets crazier by the minute. I feel like I’m in a weird movie and I don’t want to find out the ending!

Comment by mary | 2008-11-13 19:08:04

Crazy world,indeed we live in!

Especially when the President Elect worked actively on the campaign of his slumlord billionaire thug and Islamist Sharia Law advocate Cousin Odinga in Kenya. And donated $100,000 of US taxpayers’ money to ensure that Odinga’s murderous regime would:

(a) ensure girls and women in Kenya (formerly 90% Christian and 10% islamist prior to Couz Osinga, wear burquas and are “properly modest and ethical in their dealing with the male sex;

(b) terrorists in Kenya would be harbored without expecting punishment and laws would be changed to protect them;

(c) rape and pillage and burned alive in churches hundreds of women and girls who had gone there to escape the raping catastrophe of the Obama-supported Odinga civil war/genocide!

Obama should be hanging his head in shame for advocating Sharia Law and contributing so blatantly to Kenya’s Odinga dynasty of regressive social regime that will set back Christian girls there a hundred years!
It makes sense that Obamarama would give the Treasury to that Harvard Misogynist creep Larry Summers, doesn’t it? It fits in with OBAMYOPIA’S SEXIST SHARIA LAW AGENDA FOR WOMEN….

ODINGA-OBAMA ‘08 (that would have been the Dream Ticket for the Ages–two thugs united in their HATRED OF WOMEN and DEMOCRACY)

DCMediaGirl, did you really mean to say the Israelis thought showing up would be productive? Or did you leave out the “not”?

I agree wholeheartedly with your post. This is absolutely absurd. Sometimes lately I do feel that somehow I am a player on some stage of the Theater of the Absured.

If Shakespeare is right, all the world’s a stage–but look what kind it is? Holy Moley!

(Do you think this means they’ll be more tolerant of women now? Just shaking my head.)

Comment by DCMediagirl | 2008-11-13 12:46:32

Well, the Israelis clearly thought that some good would come out of attending. Much has been made of the fact that Peres and the Saudi king ate in the same room, although not at the same table and didn’t speak to each other. Now THAT’S progress!

A farce. A bloodboiling farce. And we’re enabling it.

Well not really sure what you meant by the Vatican, but the Bishops did recently make a statement about the treatment of women under Islam violating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. http://news.theage.com.au/world/bishops-say-islam-ignores-womens-rights-20081018-53eq.html

Comment by mary | 2008-11-13 19:19:06

Should we laugh or cry to see the Catholic Bishops (who sometimes push back women’s equality with a vengeance) progressing to the point where they advocate a more tolerant Islamist approach to women’s rights! Wonders never cease!

Now can we have the Bishops send an epistle to Prez Obama to beg and pray that he does not continue his misogynist agenda while pillaging and pilfering the white house….With Rahmbo Emanuel missing his midfinger and Obama’s own midfinger being overly active in his starring role in youtube’s mega hit:

“Obama Gives Hillary the Finger”……

Perhaps Obama is hiring Rahmbo Emanuel, the ex-ballerina with diva temperament that would melt Alaska’s igloos instantly, as Chief of Staff to ensure that Larry Summers gets the Treasury and then it’s adios to those hardwon rights for women in America…

Larry said in his post recnetly that Obama is BUSH II. It is tragic to admit this but Obama should scare women even more than Bush Dubya’s misogynist agenda which has terrorized the true Family issues women have to wrestle with–with no help from His Hopeness the next 4 years either!

Can we send Obama to Kenya to work out his Self-Discovery Healing issues rather than have him do this at our expense here? Remember Palin’s first speech which was target on: “Obama is using the Presidency as a way to Self-discovery”!!!!! Yes indeed. And we’ll be paying for the couch treatments for the next 4 years…This arrogant narcissistic anorexic resume holder will be the Worst President–and will set back women’s rights by a decade!

The jerk was praising Reagan’s trajectory purposefully ignoring Bill Clinton’s legacy….
Let’s hope the Fairy Tale of the Obama Prezidency will soon be over! He sure is fidgety when he appeared between a bunch of women at the View. The little jerk (on the Jay Leno show they had a vid from last march) was brushing his suit, his shirt, his trousers….so uncomfortable with the women he’s sure to yell:
“Back to the end of the bus, Ladies”!….any refunds…

It’s only bizarre if you take the UN seriously. The UN is an institution that affords its members a place for dialogue, consensus, exchange of ideas. A place of lofty discussions.

Yet, many of the member states, who participate in the democratic practice of the right of assembly and vote, represent states that deny their constituents any participation in governments that rule over their lives.

The right to a platform on which to voice a position at the UN, the right to vote on a resolution should only be granted to those member states that grant their population the same rights in participatory decision making. Short of this, the UN will continue to be a hypocritical circus indulging itself in wasting taxpayer money.

EXCLUSIVE: Did Next Commander-in-Chief Falsify Selective Service Registration? Never Actually Register? Obama’s Draft Registration Raises Serious Questions

Did President-elect Barack Hussein Obama commit a federal crime in September of this year? Or did he never actually register and, instead, did friends of his in the Chicago federal records center, which maintains the official copy of his alleged Selective Service registration commit the crime for him?

Click on link to see the document.

Comment by notrees | 2008-11-13 13:11:38

Interesting question, because if Obama registered in college as a foriegn exchange student does that mean he would also skip the required manpower registration at age 18?

Comment by bemused | 2008-11-13 13:20:14

Foreigners can enlist, apparently. But register for the draft? This looks even better than the BC, can-of-wormswise, because someone has an actual document instead of a bunch of pixels.

Comment by notrees | 2008-11-13 13:25:00

He couldn’t have it both ways. Either he was an American citizen who was required by law to register at age 18 or he was a foriegnor who was not required by law to register. On his registration he would have to state his nationality.

I’ve also read While Europe Slept and suggest everyone try to get a copy. It’s an easy, if alarming, read. The author is a gay American living in Europe and he chronicles the rising influence of immigrant Moslem populations in European countries. He discusses how Sahria law is competing with secular legal systems and how violence against gays is increasing in formerly very liberal countries. These changes happened gradually. I think the events recounted in While Europe Slept have implications for our own country.

Comment by Snickers | 2008-11-13 18:57:19

When misogyny is allowed to exist and thrive, then the climate is right for any other sort of intolerance.

Sorry if this is OT…But here’s a great article on what someone from the UK thinks about our mess. Aptly entitled “The Night We Waved Goodbye To America.”

The Night We Waved Goodbye to America … Our Last Best Hope on Earth

By Peter Hitchens, (UK) Daily Mail

Anyone would think we had just elected a hip, skinny and youthful replacement for God, with a plan to modernise Heaven and Hell – or that at the very least John Lennon had come back from the dead.

The swooning frenzy over the choice of Barack Obama as President of the United States must be one of the most absurd waves of self-deception and swirling fantasy ever to sweep through an advanced civilisation. At least Mandela-worship – its nearest equivalent – is focused on a man who actually did something.
I really don’t see how the Obama devotees can ever in future mock the Moonies, the Scientologists or people who claim to have been abducted in flying saucers. This is a cult like the one which grew up around Princess Diana, bereft of reason and hostile to facts.

It already has all the signs of such a thing. The newspapers which recorded Obama’s victory have become valuable relics. You may buy Obama picture books and Obama calendars and if there isn’t yet a children’s picture version of his story, there soon will be.

Proper books, recording his sordid associates, his cowardly voting record, his astonishingly militant commitment to unrestricted abortion and his blundering trip to Africa, are little-read and hard to find.

If you can believe that this undistinguished and conventionally Left-wing machine politician is a sort of secular saviour, then you can believe anything. He plainly doesn’t believe it himself. His cliche-stuffed, PC clunker of an acceptance speech suffered badly from nerves. It was what you would expect from someone who knew he’d promised too much and that from now on the easy bit was over.
He needn’t worry too much. From now on, the rough boys and girls of America’s Democratic Party apparatus, many recycled from Bill Clinton’s stained and crumpled entourage, will crowd round him, to collect the rich spoils of his victory and also tell him what to do, which is what he is used to.

Just look at his sermon by the shores of Lake Michigan. He really did talk about a ‘new dawn’, and a ‘timeless creed’ (which was ‘yes, we can’). He proclaimed that ‘change has come’. He revealed that, despite having edited the Harvard Law Review, he doesn’t know what ‘enormity’ means. He reached depths of oratorical drivel never even plumbed by our own Mr Blair, burbling about putting our hands on the arc of history (or was it the ark of history?) and bending it once more toward the hope of a better day (Don’t try this at home).

I am not making this up. No wonder that awful old hack Jesse Jackson sobbed as he watched. How he must wish he, too, could get away with this sort of stuff.

And it was interesting how the President-elect failed to lift his admiring audience by repeated – but rather hesitant – invocations of the brainless slogan he was forced by his minders to adopt against his will – ‘Yes, we can’. They were supposed to thunder ‘Yes, we can!’ back at him, but they just wouldn’t join in. No wonder. Yes we can what exactly? Go home and keep a close eye on the tax rate, is my advice. He’d have been better off bursting into ‘I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony’ which contains roughly the same message and might have attracted some valuable commercial sponsorship.

Perhaps, being a Chicago crowd, they knew some of the things that 52.5 per cent of America prefers not to know. They know Obama is the obedient servant of one of the most squalid and unshakeable political machines in America. They know that one of his alarmingly close associates, a state-subsidised slum landlord called Tony Rezko, has been convicted on fraud and corruption charges.

They also know the US is just as segregated as it was before Martin Luther King – in schools, streets, neighbourhoods, holidays, even in its TV-watching habits and its choice of fast-food joint. The difference is that it is now done by unspoken agreement rather than by law.

If Mr Obama’s election had threatened any of that, his feel-good white supporters would have scuttled off and voted for John McCain, or practically anyone. But it doesn’t. Mr Obama, thanks mainly to the now-departed grandmother he alternately praised as a saint and denounced as a racial bigot, has the huge advantages of an expensive private education. He did not have to grow up in the badlands of useless schools, shattered families and gangs which are the lot of so many young black men of his generation.

If the nonsensical claims made for this election were true, then every positive discrimination programme aimed at helping black people into jobs they otherwise wouldn’t get should be abandoned forthwith. Nothing of the kind will happen. On the contrary, there will probably be more of them.
And if those who voted for Obama were all proving their anti-racist nobility, that presumably means that those many millions who didn’t vote for him were proving themselves to be hopeless bigots. This is obviously untrue.

I was in Washington DC the night of the election. America’s beautiful capital has a sad secret. It is perhaps the most racially divided city in the world, with 15th Street – which runs due north from the White House – the unofficial frontier between black and white. But, like so much of America, it also now has a new division, and one which is in many ways much more important. I had attended an election-night party in a smart and liberal white area, but was staying the night less than a mile away on the edge of a suburb where Spanish is spoken as much as English, plus a smattering of tongues from such places as Ethiopia, Somalia and Afghanistan.

As I walked, I crossed another of Washington’s secret frontiers. There had been a few white people blowing car horns and shouting, as the result became clear. But among the Mexicans, Salvadorans and the other Third World nationalities, there was something like ecstasy.

They grasped the real significance of this moment. They knew it meant that America had finally switched sides in a global cultural war. Forget the Cold War, or even the Iraq War. The United States, having for the most part a deeply conservative people, had until now just about stood out against many of the mistakes which have ruined so much of the rest of the world.

Suspicious of welfare addiction, feeble justice and high taxes, totally committed to preserving its own national sovereignty, unabashedly Christian in a world part secular and part Muslim, suspicious of the Great Global Warming panic, it was unique.

These strengths had been fading for some time, mainly due to poorly controlled mass immigration and to the march of political correctness. They had also been weakened by the failure of America’s conservative party – the Republicans – to fight on the cultural and moral fronts.

They preferred to posture on the world stage. Scared of confronting Left-wing teachers and sexual revolutionaries at home, they could order soldiers to be brave on their behalf in far-off deserts. And now the US, like Britain before it, has begun the long slow descent into the Third World. How sad. Where now is our last best hope on Earth?

Christian Science Monitor is correct.

Netherlands has a blasphemy law since last week. All majors of the big dutch cities are moslem. In Rotterdam, people cannot attend and understand the town deliberations because they are in turquish.

I live in France where an official organisation (HALDE) has been set up to prosecute people criticizing islam or not hiring muslims workers.

The irony of the story is that le gov. of the Maldives Island wanted a blasphemy law. The parliament was at first very enthousiastic. They had the draft prepared by a western jurist. The dummy started by “any insult to a religion, its representatives …”. The parliament rejected the law with the argument :

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FORCE A MUSLIM TO RESPECT ANOTHER RELIGION.

Jean Breban I have no idea where you are from but your bigoted post is just that bigoted lies. HALDE is established by a CONSERVATIVE leaning Government to prevent discrimination on areas of origin, disability and sex in areas of Housing and Education.

Nothing pro or anti Muslim about it. The only anti Islamic bigot here is the one posting lies.

Do you invent people scratching B on your face as well?
