NY Times: Media Falls for Hoax (Maybe Sarah Palin knows her geography after all)

Here at No Quarter, we spend a lot of time discussing the shortcomings (and there are so many) of the so-called Main Stream Media. While I hate to give Rush Limbaugh a whole lot of credit for anything, he refers to them as the “Drive by Media” and it certainly is an apt description.
The modern media’s 24 hour news cycle has changed the way the news is delivered and has pretty much destroyed the tenets of journalism. In order to get information out first and constantly refresh the news product, old rules about double and triple checking information provided by sources and investigating the integrity of those sources no longer fit the game.
Shortly after election day, Fox News ran a story quoting an unnamed McCain source as saying that Sarah Palin was not aware that Africa was a continent. Just a few minutes later, the story popped up on MSNBC after someone who saw the Fox piece e-mailed the tip to a friend in the MSNBC newsroom.
Instantly, e-mails and blogs started buzzing and those suffering from extreme “Palin Derangement Syndrome” were ecstatic over having more “proof” that she wouldn’t make it past the first round on “Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader”.
Heres the problem, the entire story was a hoax perpetrated by a couple of guys trying to drum up interest in a television show based on a fictional character they have created.

If you are waiting for prime time retractions, don’t hold your breath.
Who would say such a thing? On Monday the answer popped up on a blog and popped out of the mouth of David Shuster, an MSNBC anchor. “Turns out it was Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, who has come forward today to identify himself as the source of the leaks,” Mr. Shuster said.
Trouble is, Martin Eisenstadt doesn’t exist. His blog does, but it’s a put-on. The think tank where he is a senior fellow — the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy — is just a Web site. The TV clips of him on YouTube are fakes.
And the claim of credit for the Africa anecdote is just the latest ruse by Eisenstadt, who turns out to be a very elaborate hoax that has been going on for months. MSNBC, which quickly corrected the mistake, has plenty of company in being taken in by an Eisenstadt hoax, including The New Republic and The Los Angeles Times.
Now a pair of obscure filmmakers say they created Martin Eisenstadt to help them pitch a TV show based on the character.
The creators of this hoax, know just how easy it is to take advantage of today’s media.
They say the blame lies not with them but with shoddiness in the traditional news media and especially the blogosphere.
“With the 24-hour news cycle they rush into anything they can find,” said Mr. Mirvish, 40.
Mr. Gorlin, 39, argued that Eisenstadt was no more of a joke than half the bloggers or political commentators on the Internet or television.
Even MSNBC admits to the mistake
An MSNBC spokesman, Jeremy Gaines, explained the network’s misstep by saying someone in the newsroom received the Palin item in an e-mail message from a colleague and assumed it had been checked out. “It had not been vetted,” he said. “It should not have made air.”
And while the MSM is easily fooled, bloggers are even bigger victims of information hoaxes.
But most of Eisenstadt’s victims have been bloggers, a reflection of the sloppy speed at which any tidbit, no matter how specious, can bounce around the Internet. And they fell for the fake material despite ample warnings online about Eisenstadt, including the work of one blogger who spent months chasing the illusion around cyberspace, trying to debunk it.
As for Sarah Palin, the damage is already done for now. No amount of retractions will make up for the hits her image has taken. Jay Leno, David Letterman, Bill Maher and Jon Stewart will not be telling jokes about how stupid they were in repeating this nonsense. Maybe they should have written a few more jokes about the guy running for President of the 57 United States.
On the media level, there are no solutions coming. News organizations will not invest more time and money into vetting stories. Reporters and bloggers will not take more time to carefully check their facts in fear of losing out to competitors. The only solution has to come from us, the consumers. We just have to accept that every news story that comes down the road, is just a story and we can not rush to judgement.

Obama was a Kenyan citizen and he did apply to Columbia as a Kenyan exchange student in order to help his chances of getting into such a tough school.
It was not dishonest. Anyone with the advantage of having that kind of citizenship would use it on the application and would be crazy not to. Just like anyone who is a minority such as black or Latino would be crazy not to specify it on the application, as these schools truly want to admit a diverse class and actively seek out qualified minority applicants. It would just be foolish not to check the box that you truly have this demographic attribute. Truthful and smart.
It’s just that he doesn’t want it publicized now that he gained admission under his Kenyan citizenship.
It’s a fact that’s been carefully sealed away and conveniently ignored by the media.
Sorry but if he got into Columbia based on the fact that he was a Kenyan Citizen – by the same token he should NOT get the office of President of the United States based on that same fact.
He truly has to be stopped before december 15 – or all those electors will face the consequences of illegally signing into fact that he is officially able to be President under the constitution.

This is probably a dead end street. Obama’s mother was an American citizen at the time of his birth. Does that fact not have any bearing whatsoever on his right to also be an American citizen?

Not if he was born in another country. Made more complicated because his father is not a natural born American. IF he was born in Hawaii, not Kenya as speculated, under Hawaiian law at the time of his birth, Obama’s mother was not old enough and did not lived the required years on American soil to qualify Obama as a natural born citizen.
McCain went through the same scrutiny – because he was born in Panama. But unlike Obama, both McCain’s parents ARE natural born citizens and he was born on American territory while serving the USA.

Governor Palin lost votes because of the unrelenting barrage of blatant lies and smears against her and her family which could not have been but initiated deliberately by the opposing camp, not because of any lack of qualifications or abilities for office nor any actual personal background. Now, look, you can grant that Palin might have meant South Africa (which really is a country) and sort of see how the conversation took place. I think the story was definitely exaggerated, and her question wasn’t all that off-base…but still…the hoax was the idea of a hoax.

Don’t know what interview you saw with Greta, but Palin never admitted asking if Africa was a country or continent. She said Africa was mentioned, but never in the context of whether it was a country or continent. That was the “lie” part. Next

“I don’t know, because I remember the discussion about Africa, my concern has been the atrocities there in Darfur…”
In the original conversation, they had asked about the *continent* of Africa, and she wanted to know if they mean a specific *country*, like Darfur. That is where the continent/country stuff comes from.
Like I said, it was taken out of context, but it wasn’t a hoax. The leak really did come from the McCain camp…and Fox, by the way, broke the story.

The “whitey video” claim was essentially identical to the “Palin though Africa is a country” thing. A journalist/pundit puts out an incredibly derogatory but completely unsubstantiated story, and attributes it to anonymous sources.
Same M.O. in each case: smear someone without taking responsibility.
In the first case, the noquarterbots cheered it with everything they had and refused to accept that the mere passage of time had discredited the story and its promoter.
In the second case, noquarterbot Rob is calling for the people involved to be prosecuted and deported. That makes Rob an enemy of the Constitution (1st Amendment) and an anti-American fool, but that’s beside my main point.
Which is: the situational ethics on display here tell you everything you need to know about the integrity of noquarterbots.
Except for one thing, “Bob”, and that is that the Corpse Media DID NOT report ANYTHING about the “White Tape”….
Setting everything else aside, that’s the big difference. That is, even assuming both are rumors, the “reporters” went into a circle-jerk shit storm to report Palin’s African Adventure while nothing was EVER said about MEchelle’s recordings available from UCC’s website (until 08-Feb).

Black people in the know in Chicago (I lived there once and have relatives there now) have heard with their own ears people who were at a particular event who heard MO rant and rave about whites and about Bill Clinton who was invited to this event to speak. Many snicker about it. MO was incensed at Bill’s attendance and at what he had to say. Maybe her comments were taped and the taper was paid off by Obama surrogates not to give up the tape. Thank you for staying out of this controversy so long. I do believe she said things like that over time. It does fit a pattern. I just did not think it would be good for anyone in the country to watch something like that. There IS too much meanness in society–she is right about that. I do not enjoy at all the back-and-forth on NQ sometimes when it seems to be people just trying to “out funny” or “out mean” each other.
We need some dignity and respectful behavior in our leaders. Their families, though, should be off limits, as McCain made clear. Throughout out history, we have many examples of family members of Presidents being embarrassing to the President.
In this case, it perhaps shows a President choosing his wife for her connection to the whole Black Liberation idea so he could use that connection as he has used all his connections to get where he is, which is all I believe he ever wanted. I don’t believe he ever really had a vision of what he wants to do as President, really. It’s all in his imagination. (I always thought Hillary had actual plans and hopes for doing what she could do make our country work better.)
I just wish the primary and general election could have been focused on the ideas of the candidates and the accomplishments of the candidates, instead of all these issues of “character,” charisma, race, and on an on.
Character does matter, and it shows through accomplishment and behavior, and that is why O’s character is being questioned–no accomplishment and bad behavior.

1) The New York Times did not get fooled by the hoax. They reported the hoax. Read the NYT story.
2) I’m not likening Larry’s “whitey” story to the Eisenstadt hoax. I’m likening Larry’s “whitey” story (which was picked up by by the mainstream media, in case you missed that) to Carl Cameron’s “Palin thinks Africa is a country” story.
I didn’t see much in the MSM about the whitey tape, only mention (and immediate dismissal of it) on Politico, and the Bob Beckel allusion to it on FOX. Anywhere else I read mention of it was in the blogosphere.
Where else among the MSM was it covered (and particularly) without immediate refutation? I’m curious because if it’s true I missed it.
Republican operative Roger Stone also mentioned it on Fox News, around the time that Bob Beckel did.
Why shouldn’t it have been immediately refuted? There was absolutely zero fricking reason to even consider that it was legitimate.

I have no idea what any of this is about, so my head is spinning watching the arguments.
I went to the NY Times site. Even they admit they should have been more careful with their sourcing.
They are often relying on anonymous sources. Many journalists say this is a bad practice.
If your anonymous sources aren’t willing to go on the record about an “Africa is a country” remark, which is fairly innocuous, what are they willing to go the record for?
Obama talked about 57 states but that wasn’t an indication of an intelligence flaw. Instead he is hailed as the the smartest Prez-elect ever.
Biden mistakes a 4 letter word for a 3 letter word yet no one questions his intelligence.
Obama hides his past, relationships, records (the same records he demanded all of his opponents release).
Obama knows nothing about Ayers terrorist past or Rezko’s indictment yet is hailed as brilliant.
Obama claims he knows nothing about the suffering of black folks in public housing in Chicago in his district. The same public housing that he helped make sure Rezko got a large government contract to fix with Obama’s help. Then Rezko did nothing.
But none of that counts although it’s all public knowledge. But anonymous sources trashing Palin? Gospel truth.
Obama should be made to fill out one of those 7-page questionnaires that he insists on for those seeking jobs in his administration.
If he were to do so, I think that Obama would have to reject himself.
