The latest hubbub in the media is the discussion about Hillary and whether Obama will name her as Secretary of State. I haven’t decided if I like the idea or not, although it would be great to have her in such an important roll. If she is SoS, it pretty much confirms she will not run in 4 years, although I am not sure if she would, anyway.
But, what I am wondering, is WHY Obama is considering her for Secretary of State. Obama spent the primary season telling us over and over again that Hillary does not have foreign policy experience. So, why would he consider her for a role that is all about foreign policy?
“I hope people start asking, what exactly is this foreign experience that she’s claiming? I know she talks about visiting 80 countries. However it’s not clear…was she negotiating treaties or agreements, or was she handling crises during this period of time?” Obama asked.
So, is Obama just leaking this story, to pretend he is considering her, or is he seriously considering her? And if he is seriously considering Hillary, then why? Why would he put someone in that position that did nothing more than throw tea parties?
“It’s that experience, that understanding, not just of what world leaders I went and talked to in the ambassador’s house I had tea with, but understanding the lives of the people like my grandmother who lives in a tiny hut in Africa,” he said.
“When Senator Clinton brags ‘I’ve met leaders from eighty countries’ — I know what those trips are like! I’ve been on them. You go from the airport to the embassy. There’s a group of children who do native dance. You meet with the CIA station chief and the embassy and they give you a briefing. You go take a tour of a plant that [with] the assistance of USAID has started something. And then — you go.”
Obama also claimed to have far more foreign policy experience than Clinton or McCain, because he lived in Indonesia when he was 6-10 years old, and vacationed for three weeks in Pakistan when he was in college.
“You do that in eighty countries,” Obama said, “You don’t know those eighty countries. So when I speak about having lived in Indonesia for four years, having family that is impoverished in small villages in Africa –knowing the leaders is not important — what I know is the people…I traveled to Pakistan when I was in college — I knew what Sunni and Shia was [sic] before I joined the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.”
Obama even went so far as to have his team draft a memo, slamming Hillary on her foreign policy. His strongest punch was her support of the Iraq war. (although, it doesn’t seem to bother him that Biden did, too.)
The memo, “Senator Clinton’s claim to be experienced in foreign policy: Just words?” hits Hillary on every claim she makes to have foreign policy experience. You can read the entire memo here.
The memo finishes, “And Barack Obama does not use false charges and exaggerated claims to play politics with national security.”
So, I ask, why would he choose Hillary as SoS and take such *risks* with national security?
Is he seriously considering naming Hillary, the former First Lady, who just poured tea and watched a few native dances, as Secretary of State?
“Supporters of rival Barack Obama argued that the former first lady’s trips abroad hardly constituted a practice run for managing global crises.”She was never asked to do the heavy lifting” when meeting with foreign leaders, said Susan Rice, who was an assistant secretary of state in the Clinton administration and is now advising Obama. “She wasn’t asked to move the mountain or deliver a harsh message or a veiled threat. It was all gentle prodding or constructive reinforcement. And it would not have been appropriate for her to do the heavy lifting.”
Is this possibly his *worst hire yet* or did he not really mean anything he said about her during the primary?
She either has foreign policy experience or she doesn’t. So, which is it?
(for the record, I think she is very qualified for the job. It is Obama who apparently doesn’t think she is qualified…at least he didn’t a couple of months ago.)

great post. I think Obama is full of horseshit as usual but we all know that already. Only millions of morons would support someone like this who trashed Clinton and said she didn’t have foreign policy experience. And then turn around and consider her for an SOS which is all about foreign policy. I think he just wants the Clinton name and legacy to help prop him up because he knows he’s in deep shit. Or he just doesn’t know what the fuck he is doing, likely, both.
When Barack Obama “leaks” Hillary to the public or when he does anything else controversial or odd to capture media attention…watch very carefully for what else may be going on that he doesn’t want on the front page – that he doesn’t want us to notice.

We as a nation need to learn from our history. Especially in response to Obama. Look back thru the primary at his actions. Anytime he ‘leaked’ a story it was to take the attention off something else. So, I ask…..what is he hiding behind that smoke screen that he is so busy creating???
I would suggest it is a weak Senate. IF he can get Hillary and McCain out of the Senate then his policies will have a much easier time getting passed.
Think about that, weak Senate, SOS that he can fire at anytime without any reason.
Why would Hillary put her career and the faith that 18.5 million people have in her? The only reason I could see that she would take the SOS if it is ever offered would be because she think she could do damage control for Obama’s policies. Otherwise, what reason would you take that position? She can do more for the people in the USA from the Senate than any other position available to her at this time.
Flip flop is Obama’s middle name. He’s already hired most all of Clinton’s staff after he spent the entire campaign yelling that Bill Clinton’s administration never did anything important and never brought any real change to the country. We’ll see what kind of change The One brings.
Hillary couldn’t run for president in 2012 anyway unless Obama declined to run. You don’t challenge an incumbent. (Unless you’re a complete a** like Edward Kennedy).

The simple reality is that ANYONE in any political party has the right to consider running for the party’s nomination regardless of the incumbent. (This was proved in 1968 when Eugene McCarthy decided to run against LBJ and won 42% of the New Hampshire primary, compared to LBJ’s 49%. Bobby Kennedy then declared his candidacy a few days after the NH primary; LBJ wouldn’t formally withdraw his candidacy for another two weeks.)

Some how I do not see Kerry or Richardson as being premier choices and leak of Hillary is a mechanism for them to gain time untill they can find some one who will take the job. I just do not see him picking a strong person like her to have to contend with.

Colin Powell’s flop as SOS is the perfect example why Hillary should turn down this job.

As much as I dislike Bush and Cheney, I always had much respect for Condaleeza Rice and Colin Powell (well, until he supporterd Obama for Pres. anyway). The only time I have ever screwed myself in my life has been when I went against my “gut.” My gut tells me to get the hell out of this country and it told me that the first time I EVER laid eyes on that nut. I would really hate to not trust my gut on this one. Sorry, I can’t support him, trust him, or have any faith. I also don’t think that sitting around and letting things happen is a great idea. The best people in the world are famous because of dissent. We’re ALLOWED and ENTITLED to not want this and to fight it. It’s still America and we still have free will. England and Canada are really not that different are they? Yes I am planning to leave. Many of my friends and my family friends are already on the way out. Most are going to Vancouver or Toronto. Some Brazil and Dominican Republic. My first thought is Costa Rica or Italy. Two of my friends want me to go to Hawaii with them – Kauai because they is a big naval base there so we might be safe. But that’s still America. I am probably going to Costa Rica in December to look at property. Mother wants to go to Toronto. Trying to figure out where to put the money since Fraudbama has plans to stop us from putting money overseas. Ughhh…what a mess that’s coming. I wish I could be more hopeful but I think that’s sort of moronic for ME, considering what I know. I’m glad you all are feeling better about it. Nothing would make me happier than to stay in the country I love more than life. But what’s the point? It’s not America anymore anyway.
We are no longer in campaign mode. I will never forgive nor forget what happened of course, and won’t lift a finger to help this administration (not that they would care nor notice anyway). I love your support of women (and hey, you’re hot on top of it all). But I don’t think Hillary can stop him from anything. He’s insane and she’s never stopped him before this. She knew all about the Caucus Fraud and what he did to her. Her lawyers wrote letters to the DNC about it. He got away with it. He will do more of the same to her and all of my Hillary friends don’t think she should do it because it’s just a way to disempower her dissenting voice in Senate.

I listen to Obama and I hear the same empty rhetoric as Bush in 2000. Neither had the experience or skills for the job. Each seemed to want it just because they could get it, and Obama will show he’s in over his head every single day of his Presidency, just as Bush has.
I just pray it will come out that Obama isn’t eligible, and since he’s worked so hard to not have to show proof then everyone will know he knew all along. None of that “I didn’t know” crap like he’s been pulling for the past year.

I just heard a Republican on FOX say not only was Hillary eminently qualified to be Sec of State, but is also known for working across the isle. Two months ago, Jim Cramer said Hillary would be the best choice because of her understanding of the economy. Several months ago in an interview with Leslie Stahl, Allen Greenspan said Hillary understood the economy better than any other candidate. So why is Obama going to be president? That’s easy. He was a community organizer. If he asks her, it will be the only decision he has made which elicits the slightest respect from me. Personally, I doubt he will, but pray he will for the sake of the country.
Experience didn’t matter in this election. You can’t get hired for any executive position without an impressive resume and extensive vetting, but apparently, the American people would rather feeeeel good about themselves for being cool and politically correct, than actually acting like adults and choosing someone for this immensely difficult position based on qualifications. Now he’s facing enormous challenges, and what tools does he have to solve them? He sure as hell better assemble a highly competent cabinet.

I am convinced that Hillary had some significant role in the conflict in the Balkans…more of a role than has been publicized. I base my opinion primarily on the extremely warm greeting Pope John Paul II gave to Hillary on probably his last visit to the US and other little bits and pieces of reports from different sources.
Also, based on Hillary’s website and other news reports, she and President Clinton were not only supporters, but friends, of the assassinated Israeli Yitzhak Rabin. Hillary also got herself into hot water with some American supporters of Israel for making some supportive comments of the Palestinians as First Lady. So she probably has some friends in the Middle East and I would presume those friends would be moderate and not extremists are either side of the issue.
And then there is her well-known speech in China about women’s rights. I believe that speech had an effect on thinking people across the globe. It is evident in films from around the world that this issue is a matter of concern for many people of all faiths and nationalities.
Yes. Hillary has the experience and she worked hard to elect Obama. Maybe Madeleine Albright has clued Obama in on thing or two. Maybe some of Hillary’s friends across the world are lobbying for her. If Obama has half the brains his supporters claim he has, he will offer Hillary the job.
Cabinet members DO NOT have much relevance; even if BO elects HC and JM for Secretaries of State and Defense they will not have much power. He will use them to make people believe that he is bipartisan but he will act through the Executive Office rather than through Cabinet!

I think the Bush Administration is a good example of what happens when an Executive is too advisor-centered. At first someone like Rove can make a lot happen based on image. But after a while events demand decisions that need a knowledgeable and adept leader.
I think he’s trying to give everybody something and send a signal that he’s not repaying favors. In the primary he gave something to everybody but Hillary supporters, one that he was no give, not even being a gentleman, so way less than give to us.

Hilary has very little foreign policy experience, and her instincts are hawkish and terrible. She will be an awful Secretary of State (although better than Rice). It’s obvious that Obama is just going to continue the neocon foreign policy of Bill Clinton. The sad truth is that there never was a “liberal” alternative in this election as far as foreign policy was concerned. We had a choice of “slightly barely to the left of George W. Bush” (Obama) and “right of George W. Bush” (Hilary). Ron Paul was the only candidate willing to break with the establishment.
He wants her out of town. If she stays a NY Sen, she will keep her eye on him and whoever put him up to the job.
Obama and his camp will simply claim that his criticism of Hillary was just politicking. (Look at the things said by her and Jojo about Bobo’s lack of experience.) If Bobo wants to distract from ANYTHING, the best thing he could do is nominate Hillary. The media will be more frenzied than a hornet’s nest hit by a baseball bat, and it would appear to the world that he might have a grain of sense after all–as well as enough balls to spurn Momo’s henpecking demands. As SoS, Hillary would have NO power; she would serve at the pleasure of The Pretender. My perspective is that he definitely has already offered her the position. There’s an article today that she and he worked through the weekend on financial paperwork so that she meets the criteria established with Bill’s various foundation work, etc. The report was that they made very good progress.
On the matter of Richardson, I agree with BTD that he is absolutely incompetent and should not be considered seriously for the job. Hillary is, by far, best for the country in this position. She has the discipline, the knowledge, the world-wide relationships, and the respect of both Republican and Democratic colleagues. This appointment is, in my opinion, a no-brainer for Obama.
There is another report that Obama knows that Richardson is not equipped and was not pleased with the idea of Kerry or Richardson. That cheered me up considerably. Kerry, in my opinion, lacks the depth needed for the job.
Hillary understands foreign policy better than Obama, frankly. She would be a wonderful addition to his cabinet.
I, for one, will be greatly disappointed if this doesn’t work.

I have no respect for Mccain or Hillary. Both of these fools screaming and ranting about the One and now sniffing his ass for some kind of position. That is why I will and many of us promote a “straight shooter for our candidate the next time around”. Mccain should just say “no, no thanks”. After all for someone who was ranting about palling around terrorist with Sarah, why in heaven would he want to pall around Obama too? They all are two faced, and that includes our Lady Hillary. Secondly, I am very surprise that no writer on this blog has broken out the stories on Alan Keyes vs Obama or Clarence Thomas being the decider concerning his birth certificate. These are worthy stories and NOT once have we seen them in print. Haven’t you noticed the dark circles and black eyes on Obama lately? Haven’t you seen the worry look in his face? Come on guys, it is two african americans that are trying to stop him from being POTUS- this time others cannot scream “racist” to them. Get with the story!

i am starting to think obama want hillary as SOS because he can’t fullfill his campaign promise of ending the Iraq war. He wants to have hillary there so he can transfer the blame on her instead. the obamanation thinks anything having to do with the clintons are toxic and they are to blame for all the wrongs.
